एतच्छ्रुत्वा जरत्कारुर्दुःखशोकपरायणः। उवाच स्वान्पितृन्दुःखाद्बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा ॥१-४२-१॥
etacchrutvā jaratkārurduḥkhaśokaparāyaṇaḥ। uvāca svānpitṛnduḥkhādbāṣpasaṃdigdhayā girā ॥1-42-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; दुःख (duḥkha) - sorrow; शोक (śoka) - grief; परायणः (parāyaṇaḥ) - absorbed; उवाच (uvāca) - said; स्वान् (svān) - his own; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; बाष्प (bāṣpa) - tears; संदिग्धया (saṃdigdhayā) - choked; गिरा (girā) - voice;]
(Having heard this, Jaratkaru, absorbed in sorrow and grief, said to his ancestors with a voice choked with tears from sorrow.)
Upon hearing this, Jaratkaru, overwhelmed by sorrow and grief, spoke to his ancestors with a voice choked by tears.
अहमेव जरत्कारुः किल्बिषी भवतां सुतः। तद्दण्डं धारयत मे दुष्कृतेरकृतात्मनः ॥१-४२-२॥
ahameva jaratkāruḥ kilbiṣī bhavatāṃ sutaḥ। taddaṇḍaṃ dhārayata me duṣkṛterakṛtātmanaḥ ॥1-42-2॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful; भवतां (bhavatāṃ) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तत् (tad) - that; दण्डं (daṇḍaṃ) - punishment; धारयत (dhārayata) - bear; मे (me) - my; दुष्कृतेः (duṣkṛteḥ) - of sin; अकृतात्मनः (akṛtātmanaḥ) - of the undisciplined one;]
(I indeed am Jaratkaru, the sinful son of yours. Bear the punishment for my sin, of the undisciplined one.)
I am indeed Jaratkaru, your sinful son. Please bear the punishment for my sins, as I am undisciplined.
पितर ऊचुः॥

पुत्र दिष्ट्यासि सम्प्राप्त इमं देशं यदृच्छया। किमर्थं च त्वया ब्रह्मन्न कृतो दारसङ्ग्रहः ॥१-४२-३॥
putra diṣṭyāsi samprāpta imaṃ deśaṃ yadṛcchayā| kimarthaṃ ca tvayā brahmann kṛto dārasaṅgrahaḥ ॥1-42-3॥
[पुत्र (putra) - son; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; असि (asi) - you are; सम्प्राप्त (samprāpta) - arrived; इमं (imaṃ) - this; देशं (deśaṃ) - place; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; किमर्थं (kimarthaṃ) - for what purpose; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; दारसङ्ग्रहः (dārasaṅgrahaḥ) - marriage;]
(Son, fortunately you have arrived at this place by chance. For what purpose, O Brahman, have you undertaken marriage?)
Son, it is fortunate that you have arrived at this place by chance. O Brahman, for what reason have you undertaken marriage?
जरत्कारुरुवाच॥

(Jaratkaru said:)
Jaratkaru spoke:
ममायं पितरो नित्यं हृद्यर्थः परिवर्तते। ऊर्ध्वरेताः शरीरं वै प्रापयेयममुत्र वै ॥१-४२-४॥
mamāyaṃ pitaro nityaṃ hṛdyarthaḥ parivartate। ūrdhvaretāḥ śarīraṃ vai prāpayeyamamutra vai ॥1-42-4॥
[मम (mama) - my; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - father; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; हृद्यर्थः (hṛdyarthaḥ) - dear; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - changes; ऊर्ध्वरेताः (ūrdhvaretāḥ) - ascetic; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रापयेयम् (prāpayeyam) - I should attain; अमुत्र (amutra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(My this father always dear changes. Ascetic body indeed I should attain there indeed.)
My father, who is always dear to me, undergoes changes. I should indeed attain the ascetic state of the body there.
एवं दृष्ट्वा तु भवतः शकुन्तानिव लम्बतः। मया निवर्तिता बुद्धिर्ब्रह्मचर्यात्पितामहाः ॥१-४२-५॥
evaṃ dṛṣṭvā tu bhavataḥ śakuntāniva lambataḥ। mayā nivartitā buddhirbrahmacaryātpitāmahāḥ ॥1-42-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; शकुन्तान् (śakuntān) - birds; इव (iva) - like; लम्बतः (lambataḥ) - hanging; मया (mayā) - by me; निवर्तिता (nivartitā) - turned back; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; ब्रह्मचर्यात् (brahmacaryāt) - from celibacy; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - O forefathers;]
(Thus, having seen your birds hanging, my intelligence was turned back from celibacy, O forefathers.)
O forefathers, upon seeing your birds hanging like this, my resolve towards celibacy was reversed.
करिष्ये वः प्रियं कामं निवेक्ष्ये नात्र संशयः। सनाम्नीं यद्यहं कन्यामुपलप्स्ये कदाचन ॥१-४२-६॥
kariṣye vaḥ priyaṃ kāmaṃ nivekṣye nātra saṃśayaḥ। sanāmnīṃ yadyahaṃ kanyāmupalapsye kadācana ॥1-42-6॥
[करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will do; वः (vaḥ) - for you; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; कामं (kāmaṃ) - wish; निवेक्ष्ये (nivekṣye) - I will place; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; सनाम्नीं (sanāmnīṃ) - with a name; यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; कन्याम् (kanyām) - girl; उपलप्स्ये (upalapsye) - will obtain; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(I will do your dear wish, I will place, there is no doubt here. If I ever obtain a girl with a name.)
I will fulfill your dear wish and place it, there is no doubt here. If I ever find a girl with a name.
भविष्यति च या काचिद्भैक्षवत्स्वयमुद्यता। प्रतिग्रहीता तामस्मि न भरेयं च यामहम् ॥१-४२-७॥
bhaviṣyati ca yā kācidbhaikṣavatsvayamudyatā। pratigrahītā tāmasmi na bhareyaṃ ca yāmaham ॥1-42-7॥
[भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - who; काचित् (kācit) - any; भैक्षवत् (bhaikṣavat) - like a beggar; स्वयम् (svayam) - self; उद्यता (udyatā) - prepared; प्रतिग्रहीता (pratigrahītā) - receiver; ताम् (tām) - her; अस्मि (asmi) - am; न (na) - not; भरेयम् (bhareyam) - will support; च (ca) - and; याम् (yām) - whom; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(And whoever will be prepared like a beggar herself, I am the receiver of her, and I will not support whom I am.)
And whoever is prepared to live like a beggar herself, I will accept her, but I will not support anyone whom I am.
एवंविधमहं कुर्यां निवेशं प्राप्नुयां यदि। अन्यथा न करिष्ये तु सत्यमेतत्पितामहाः ॥१-४२-८॥
evaṁvidhamahaṁ kuryāṁ niveśaṁ prāpnuyāṁ yadi। anyathā na kariṣye tu satyametatpitāmahāḥ ॥1-42-8॥
[एवंविधम् (evaṁvidham) - such; अहम् (aham) - I; कुर्यां (kuryāṁ) - would do; निवेशम् (niveśam) - settlement; प्राप्नुयां (prāpnuyāṁ) - would obtain; यदि (yadi) - if; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; न (na) - not; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - will do; तु (tu) - but; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - O forefathers;]
(If I would do such a settlement, I would obtain it; otherwise, I will not do it, but this is the truth, O forefathers.)
If I were to make such a settlement, I would achieve it; otherwise, I will not do it, but this is the truth, O forefathers.

एवमुक्त्वा तु स पितृंश्चचार पृथिवीं मुनिः। न च स्म लभते भार्यां वृद्धोऽयमिति शौनक ॥१-४२-९॥
evamuktvā tu sa pitṛṃścacāra pṛthivīṃ muniḥ| na ca sma labhate bhāryāṃ vṛddho'yamiti śaunaka ॥1-42-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; चचार (cacāra) - wandered; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्म (sma) - indeed; लभते (labhate) - obtains; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; शौनक (śaunaka) - Śaunaka;]
(Thus, having spoken, he wandered the earth, the sage, and indeed did not obtain a wife, "This old one," thus said Śaunaka.)
After speaking thus, the sage wandered the earth, but he could not find a wife because he was considered old, as Śaunaka said.
यदा निर्वेदमापन्नः पितृभिश्चोदितस्तथा। तदारण्यं स गत्वोच्चैश्चुक्रोश भृशदुःखितः ॥१-४२-१०॥
yadā nirvedamāpannaḥ pitṛbhiścoditastathā| tadāraṇyaṃ sa gatvoccaścukrośa bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ॥1-42-10॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; निर्वेदम् (nirvedam) - despair; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - having attained; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - by the fathers; चोदितः (coditaḥ) - urged; तथा (tathā) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - forest; स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; चुक्रोश (cukrośa) - cried; भृशदुःखितः (bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed;]
(When he attained despair, thus urged by the fathers, then he went to the forest and cried loudly, greatly distressed.)
When he fell into despair, urged by his ancestors, he went to the forest and cried out loudly in great distress.
यानि भूतानि सन्तीह स्थावराणि चराणि च। अन्तर्हितानि वा यानि तानि शृण्वन्तु मे वचः ॥१-४२-११॥
yāni bhūtāni santīha sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca। antarhitāni vā yāni tāni śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ ॥1-42-11॥
[यानि (yāni) - which; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; सन्ति (santi) - are; इह (iha) - here; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immovable; चराणि (carāṇi) - movable; च (ca) - and; अन्तर्हितानि (antarhitāni) - hidden; वा (vā) - or; यानि (yāni) - which; तानि (tāni) - those; शृण्वन्तु (śṛṇvantu) - may hear; मे (me) - my; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Which beings are here, immovable and movable, or which are hidden, may those hear my words.)
May all beings, whether they are visible or hidden, movable or immovable, listen to my words.
उग्रे तपसि वर्तन्तं पितरश्चोदयन्ति माम्। निविशस्वेति दुःखार्तास्तेषां प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥१-४२-१२॥
ugre tapasi vartantaṃ pitaraścodayanti mām। niviśasveti duḥkhārtāsteṣāṃ priyacikīrṣayā ॥1-42-12॥
[उग्रे (ugre) - intense; तपसि (tapasi) - penance; वर्तन्तं (vartantaṃ) - engaged; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; चोदयन्ति (codayanti) - urge; माम् (mām) - me; निविशस्व (niviśasva) - settle; इति (iti) - thus; दुःखार्ताः (duḥkhārtāḥ) - distressed; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; प्रियचिकीर्षया (priyacikīrṣayā) - desire to please;]
(Engaged in intense penance, my ancestors urge me, "Settle," thus distressed, with a desire to please them.)
My ancestors, distressed and wishing to please them, urge me to settle while I am engaged in intense penance.
निवेशार्थ्यखिलां भूमिं कन्याभैक्षं चरामि भोः। दरिद्रो दुःखशीलश्च पितृभिः संनियोजितः ॥१-४२-१३॥
niveśārthyakhilāṃ bhūmiṃ kanyābhaikṣaṃ carāmi bhoḥ। daridro duḥkhaśīlaśca pitṛbhiḥ saṃniyojitaḥ ॥1-42-13॥
[निवेशार्थ्यखिलां (niveśārthyakhilāṃ) - for settlement entire; भूमिं (bhūmiṃ) - land; कन्याभैक्षं (kanyābhaikṣaṃ) - alms for a daughter; चरामि (carāmi) - I wander; भोः (bhoḥ) - O; दरिद्रः (daridraḥ) - poor; दुःखशीलः (duḥkhaśīlaḥ) - of sorrowful nature; च (ca) - and; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - by fathers; संनियोजितः (saṃniyojitaḥ) - engaged;]
(For settlement of the entire land, I wander for alms for a daughter, O! Poor and of sorrowful nature, engaged by fathers.)
I am wandering to seek alms for my daughter's settlement on the entire land, O! Being poor and of a sorrowful nature, I have been engaged by my fathers.
यस्य कन्यास्ति भूतस्य ये मयेह प्रकीर्तिताः। ते मे कन्यां प्रयच्छन्तु चरतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥१-४२-१४॥
yasya kanyāsti bhūtasya ye mayeha prakīrtitāḥ। te me kanyāṃ prayacchantu carataḥ sarvatodiśam ॥1-42-14॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; अस्ति (asti) - is; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - of the being; ये (ye) - who; मया (mayā) - by me; इह (iha) - here; प्रकीर्तिताः (prakīrtitāḥ) - are mentioned; ते (te) - they; मे (me) - my; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - daughter; प्रयच्छन्तु (prayacchantu) - may give; चरतः (carataḥ) - wandering; सर्वतोदिशम् (sarvatodiśam) - in all directions;]
(Whose daughter is of the being, who are mentioned by me here, they may give my daughter, wandering in all directions.)
Those beings whose daughters I have mentioned here, may they give my daughter as I wander in all directions.
मम कन्या सनाम्नी या भैक्षवच्चोद्यता भवेत्। भरेयं चैव यां नाहं तां मे कन्यां प्रयच्छत ॥१-४२-१५॥
mama kanyā sanāmnī yā bhaikṣavaccodyatā bhavet। bhareyaṃ caiva yāṃ nāhaṃ tāṃ me kanyāṃ prayacchata ॥1-42-15॥
[मम (mama) - my; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; सनाम्नी (sanāmnī) - named; या (yā) - who; भैक्षवत् (bhaikṣavat) - like a beggar; चोद्यता (codyatā) - urged; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; भरेयम् (bhareyam) - I would support; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; याम् (yām) - whom; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; ताम् (tām) - her; मे (me) - my; कन्याम् (kanyām) - daughter; प्रयच्छत (prayacchata) - give;]
(My daughter, named, who would be urged like a beggar, whom I would indeed support, not I, give my daughter.)

ततस्ते पन्नगा ये वै जरत्कारौ समाहिताः। तामादाय प्रवृत्तिं ते वासुकेः प्रत्यवेदयन् ॥१-४२-१६॥
tataste pannagā ye vai jaratkārau samāhitāḥ। tāmādāya pravṛttiṃ te vāsukeḥ pratyavedayan ॥1-42-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; जरत्कारौ (jaratkārau) - Jaratkaru; समाहिताः (samāhitāḥ) - engaged; ताम् (tām) - her; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; प्रवृत्तिम् (pravṛttim) - news; ते (te) - they; वासुकेः (vāsukeḥ) - to Vasuki; प्रत्यवेदयन् (pratyavedayan) - informed;]
(Then those serpents, who were indeed engaged with Jaratkaru, having taken her, informed Vasuki of the news.)

तेषां श्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रः कन्यां तां समलङ्कृताम्। प्रगृह्यारण्यमगमत्समीपं तस्य पन्नगः ॥१-४२-१७॥
teṣāṃ śrutvā sa nāgendraḥ kanyāṃ tāṃ samalaṅkṛtām। pragṛhyāraṇyamagamatsamīpaṃ tasya pannagaḥ ॥1-42-17॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; स (sa) - he; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - the lord of serpents; कन्यां (kanyām) - the maiden; तां (tām) - that; समलङ्कृताम् (samalaṅkṛtām) - adorned; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - to the forest; अगमत् (agamat) - went; समीपं (samīpam) - near; तस्य (tasya) - his; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent;]
(Having heard of them, the lord of serpents took that adorned maiden and went to the forest near his serpent.)

[तत्र (tatra) - there; तां (tāṃ) - her; भैक्षवत्कन्यां (bhaikṣavatkanyāṃ) - beggar-maiden; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great soul; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vāsuki; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सः (saḥ) - he; तां (tāṃ) - her; प्रत्यगृह्णत (pratyagṛhṇata) - accepted;]
(There, the king of serpents, Vāsuki, gave the beggar-maiden to the great soul. O Brahman, he accepted her.)

असनामेति वै मत्वा भरणे चाविचारिते। मोक्षभावे स्थितश्चापि द्वन्द्वीभूतः परिग्रहे ॥१-४२-१९॥
asanāmeti vai matvā bharaṇe cāvicārite। mokṣabhāve sthitaścāpi dvandvībhūtaḥ parigrahe ॥1-42-19॥
[असनाम् (asanām) - name; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; भरणे (bharaṇe) - in sustenance; च (ca) - and; अविचारिते (avicarite) - unconsidered; मोक्षभावे (mokṣabhāve) - in the state of liberation; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; द्वन्द्वीभूतः (dvandvībhūtaḥ) - become dual; परिग्रहे (parigrahe) - in possession;]
(Having considered the name thus indeed, in sustenance and unconsidered, situated in the state of liberation, also become dual in possession.)

ततो नाम स कन्यायाः पप्रच्छ भृगुनन्दन। वासुके भरणं चास्या न कुर्यामित्युवाच ह ॥१-४२-२०॥
tato nāma sa kanyāyāḥ papraccha bhṛgunandana। vāsuke bharaṇaṃ cāsyā na kuryāmityuvāca ha ॥1-42-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नाम (nāma) - name; सः (saḥ) - he; कन्यायाः (kanyāyāḥ) - of the girl; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O son of Bhrigu; वासुके (vāsuke) - O Vasuki; भरणं (bharaṇam) - maintenance; च (ca) - and; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; न (na) - not; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - I should do; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then he asked the name of the girl, O son of Bhrigu. O Vasuki, I should not do her maintenance, thus he said indeed.)
Then, the son of Bhrigu asked the name of the girl. He said to Vasuki that he should not take responsibility for her maintenance.
