(Then, having called his own son Jaratkaru, the serpents, by the words of Vasuki, the king of serpents, said this.)

अहं तव पितुः पुत्र भ्रात्रा दत्ता निमित्ततः। कालः स चायं सम्प्राप्तस्तत्कुरुष्व यथातथम् ॥१-४९-२॥

(Then she, the well-wisher of the relatives, the sister of the serpent king, Jaratkaru, unperturbed, said to him.)
Then, the sister of the serpent king, Jaratkaru, who was a well-wisher of her relatives, spoke to him without any hesitation.
भुजगानामशेषाणां माता कद्रूरिति श्रुतिः। तया शप्ता रुषितया सुता यस्मान्निबोध तत् ॥१-४९-५॥
bhujagānāmaśeṣāṇāṃ mātā kadrūriti śrutiḥ। tayā śaptā ruṣitayā sutā yasmānnibodha tat ॥1-49-5॥

(The mother of all serpents is heard to be Kadru. Know that her sons were cursed by her in anger because of that.)
Kadru is known as the mother of all serpents. Understand that her sons were cursed by her in anger for that reason.
उच्छैःश्रवाः सोऽश्वराजो यन्मिथ्या न कृतो मम। विनतानिमित्तं पणिते दासभावाय पुत्रकाः ॥१-४९-६॥
ucchaiḥśravāḥ so'śvarājo yanmithyā na kṛto mama. vinatānimittaṃ paṇite dāsabhāvāya putrakāḥ ॥1-49-6॥

(Uchchaihshravas, the horse king, which was not falsely made mine, was wagered for servitude for Vinata's sake, O sons.)
Uchchaihshravas, the king of horses, was not falsely claimed by me. He was wagered for servitude due to Vinata's cause, O sons.
जनमेजयस्य वो यज्ञे धक्ष्यत्यनिलसारथिः। तत्र पञ्चत्वमापन्नाः प्रेतलोकं गमिष्यथ ॥१-४९-७॥
janamejayasya vo yajñe dhakṣyaty anilasārathiḥ। tatra pañcatvam āpannāḥ pretalokaṃ gamiṣyatha ॥1-49-7॥
[जनमेजयस्य (janamejayasya) - of Janamejaya; वः (vaḥ) - your; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; धक्ष्यति (dhakṣyati) - will burn; अनिलसारथिः (anilasārathiḥ) - wind-charioteer; तत्र (tatra) - there; पञ्चत्वम् (pañcatvam) - death; आपन्नाः (āpannāḥ) - having attained; प्रेतलोकं (pretalokaṃ) - to the world of the dead; गमिष्यथ (gamiṣyatha) - you will go;]
(In the sacrifice of Janamejaya, the wind-charioteer will burn you. There, having attained death, you will go to the world of the dead.)
In the sacrifice conducted by Janamejaya, the wind-charioteer will consume you in flames. There, you will meet your end and proceed to the realm of the departed.
तां च शप्तवतीमेवं साक्षाल्लोकपितामहः। एवमस्त्विति तद्वाक्यं प्रोवाचानुमुमोद च ॥१-४९-८॥

(And thus, the grandsire of the worlds directly cursed her, saying, "So be it," and approved that statement.)

(Vasuki also, having heard those words of the grandfather, then, O dear, when the nectar was churned, went to the refuge of the gods.)

सिद्धार्थाश्च सुराः सर्वे प्राप्यामृतमनुत्तमम्। भ्रातरं मे पुरस्कृत्य प्रजापतिमुपागमन् ॥१-४९-१०॥
siddhārthāśca surāḥ sarve prāpyāmṛtamanuttamam। bhrātaraṃ me puraskṛtya prajāpatimupāgaman ॥1-49-10॥
[सिद्धार्थाः (siddhārthāḥ) - those who have achieved their goals; च (ca) - and; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar of immortality; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; मे (me) - my; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed in front; प्रजापतिम् (prajāpatim) - Prajapati; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached;]
(Those who have achieved their goals, and all the gods, having obtained the unsurpassed nectar of immortality, approached Prajapati, having placed my brother in front.)
The gods, having achieved their goals and obtained the unsurpassed nectar of immortality, approached Prajapati with my brother leading them.
ते तं प्रसादयामासुर्देवाः सर्वे पितामहम्। राज्ञा वासुकिना सार्धं स शापो न भवेदिति ॥१-४९-११॥
te taṃ prasādayāmāsur devāḥ sarve pitāmaham। rājñā vāsukinā sārdhaṃ sa śāpo na bhaved iti ॥1-49-11॥

(They appeased him, all the gods, the grandfather. Together with King Vāsuki, that curse should not be thus.)

वासुकिर्नागराजोऽयं दुःखितो ज्ञातिकारणात्। अभिशापः स मात्रास्य भगवन्न भवेदिति ॥१-४९-१२॥

(Vasuki, the king of serpents, is sorrowful due to the reason of his relatives. The curse by his mother, O Lord, should not be thus.)

जरत्कारुर्जरत्कारुं यां भार्यां समवाप्स्यति। तत्र जातो द्विजः शापाद्भुजगान्मोक्षयिष्यति ॥१-४९-१३॥
jaratkārurjaratkāruṃ yāṃ bhāryāṃ samavāpsyati| tatra jāto dvijaḥ śāpādbhujagānmokṣayiṣyati ॥1-49-13॥
[जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; जरत्कारुं (jaratkāruṃ) - Jaratkaru; यां (yāṃ) - whom; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; समवाप्स्यति (samavāpsyati) - will obtain; तत्र (tatra) - there; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - brahmin; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; भुजगान् (bhujagān) - serpents; मोक्षयिष्यति (mokṣayiṣyati) - will liberate;]
(Jaratkaru will obtain Jaratkaru as a wife. There, a brahmin born will liberate the serpents from the curse.)
Jaratkaru will marry a woman named Jaratkaru. Their son, a brahmin, will be born and will liberate the serpents from a curse.

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं वासुकिः पन्नगेश्वरः। प्रादान्माममरप्रख्य तव पित्रे महात्मने ॥१-४९-१४॥
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṃ vāsukiḥ pannageśvaraḥ। prādānmāmamaprakhya tava pitre mahātmane ॥1-49-14॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vasuki; पन्नगेश्वरः (pannageśvaraḥ) - lord of serpents; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; माम् (mām) - me; अमरप्रख्य (amaraprakhya) - like the gods; तव (tava) - your; पित्रे (pitre) - to father; महात्मने (mahātmane) - great soul;]
(Having heard these words, Vasuki, the lord of serpents, gave me, like the gods, to your father, the great soul.)
Upon hearing these words, Vasuki, the king of serpents, bestowed me, akin to the immortals, upon your noble father.
प्रागेवानागते काले तत्र त्वं मय्यजायथाः ॥१-४९-१४॥
prāgevānāgate kāle tatra tvaṃ mayyajāyathāḥ ॥1-49-14॥
[प्रागेव (prāgeva) - before indeed; अनागते (anāgate) - unarrived; काले (kāle) - time; तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मयि (mayi) - in me; अजायथाः (ajāyathāḥ) - were born;]
(Before indeed the unarrived time, there you were born in me.)
Before the time had arrived, you were already born in me.
अयं स कालः सम्प्राप्तो भयान्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि। भ्रातरं चैव मे तस्मात्त्रातुमर्हसि पावकात् ॥१-४९-१५॥
ayaṁ sa kālaḥ samprāpto bhayān nas trātum arhasi। bhrātaraṁ caiva me tasmāt trātum arhasi pāvakāt ॥1-49-15॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; सः (saḥ) - he; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; नः (naḥ) - us; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मे (me) - my; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पावकात् (pāvakāt) - from fire;]
(This is the time arrived to protect us from fear. You should protect my brother indeed from the fire.)
This is the time that has come for you to protect us from fear. Therefore, you should also protect my brother from the fire.
अमोघं नः कृतं तत्स्याद्यदहं तव धीमते। पित्रे दत्ता विमोक्षार्थं कथं वा पुत्र मन्यसे ॥१-४९-१६॥
amoghaṃ naḥ kṛtaṃ tatsyādyadahaṃ tava dhīmate। pitre dattā vimokṣārthaṃ kathaṃ vā putra manyase ॥1-49-16॥
[अमोघं (amoghaṃ) - infallible; नः (naḥ) - our; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; तत् (tat) - that; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; यत् (yat) - which; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - your; धीमते (dhīmate) - wise one; पित्रे (pitre) - to father; दत्ता (dattā) - given; विमोक्षार्थं (vimokṣārthaṃ) - for liberation; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वा (vā) - or; पुत्र (putra) - son; मन्यसे (manyase) - do you think;]
(Infallible is our deed, that may be, which I, to your wise self, have given to the father for liberation; how or son, do you think?)
Our deed is infallible, which I have given to your wise self for the liberation of the father; what do you think, my son?

(Thus spoken, having said so, Astika then said to his mother, as if reviving the grief-stricken Vasuki.)

अहं त्वां मोक्षयिष्यामि वासुके पन्नगोत्तम। तस्माच्छापान्महासत्त्व सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१-४९-१८॥
ahaṁ tvāṁ mokṣayiṣyāmi vāsuke pannagottama। tasmācchāpānmahāsattva satyametadbravīmi te ॥1-49-18॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; मोक्षयिष्यामि (mokṣayiṣyāmi) - will liberate; वासुके (vāsuke) - Vasuki; पन्नगोत्तम (pannagottama) - O best of serpents; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; महासत्त्व (mahāsattva) - O great being; सत्यम् (satyam) - truly; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you;]
(I will liberate you, O Vasuki, best of serpents, therefore from the curse, O great being, truly this I say to you.)
I assure you, O Vasuki, the best of serpents, that I will indeed free you from the curse, O great being.
भव स्वस्थमना नाग न हि ते विद्यते भयम्। प्रयतिष्ये तथा सौम्य यथा श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥१-४९-१९॥
bhava svasthamanā nāga na hi te vidyate bhayam। prayatiṣye tathā saumya yathā śreyo bhaviṣyati ॥1-49-19॥
[भव (bhava) - be; स्वस्थमना (svasthamanā) - calm-minded; नाग (nāga) - O serpent; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; प्रयतिष्ये (prayatiṣye) - I will endeavor; तथा (tathā) - thus; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; यथा (yathā) - so that; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - welfare; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Be calm-minded, O serpent, for indeed there is no fear for you. I will endeavor thus, gentle one, so that welfare will be.)
Be at ease, O serpent, for there is truly no danger for you. I will act in such a way, dear one, that your well-being will be ensured.
न मे वागनृतं प्राह स्वैरेष्वपि कुतोऽन्यथा ॥१-४९-१९॥
na me vāganṛtaṃ prāha svaireṣvapi kuto'nyathā ॥1-49-19॥

My speech is never false, not even in private, so how could it be otherwise?
तं वै नृपवरं गत्वा दीक्षितं जनमेजयम्। वाग्भिर्मङ्गलयुक्ताभिस्तोषयिष्येऽद्य मातुल ॥१-४९-२०॥
taṃ vai nṛpavaraṃ gatvā dīkṣitaṃ janamejayam। vāgbhirmaṅgalayuktābhistoṣayiṣye'dya mātula ॥1-49-20॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; नृपवरं (nṛpavaraṃ) - king among men; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; दीक्षितं (dīkṣitaṃ) - consecrated; जनमेजयम् (janamejayam) - Janamejaya; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; मङ्गलयुक्ताभिः (maṅgalayuktābhiḥ) - auspicious; तोषयिष्ये (toṣayiṣye) - I will please; अद्य (adya) - today; मातुल (mātula) - uncle;]
(Having gone to that king among men, the consecrated Janamejaya, I will please him today with auspicious words, uncle.)
Uncle, today I will go to the consecrated King Janamejaya and please him with auspicious words.
यथा स यज्ञो नृपतेर्निर्वर्तिष्यति सत्तम ॥१-४९-२०॥
