ya ete kīrtitā brahmanye cānye nānukīrtitāḥ। samyaktāñśrotumicchāmi rājñaścānyānsuvarcasaḥ ॥1-58-1॥

रहस्यं खल्विदं राजन्देवानामिति नः श्रुतम्। तत्तु ते कथयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा स्वयम्भुवे ॥१-५८-३॥
rahasyaṁ khalvidaṁ rājandevānāmiti naḥ śrutam। tattu te kathayiṣyāmi namaskṛtvā svayambhuve ॥1-58-3॥
[रहस्यम् (rahasyam) - secret; खलु (khalu) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I will tell; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskṛtvā) - having saluted; स्वयम्भुवे (svayambhuve) - to the self-born;]
(Indeed, this secret of the gods, O king, has been heard by us. But I will tell it to you, having saluted the self-born.)
O King, we have indeed heard this secret of the gods. However, I will reveal it to you after offering my salutations to the self-born.
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां पुरा। जामदग्न्यस्तपस्तेपे महेन्द्रे पर्वतोत्तमे ॥१-५८-४॥
triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīṃ kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyāṃ purā। jāmadagnyastapastepe mahendre parvatottame ॥1-58-4॥
[त्रिः (triḥ) - thrice; सप्तकृत्वः (saptakṛtvaḥ) - seven times; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निःक्षत्रियां (niḥkṣatriyāṃ) - devoid of Kshatriyas; पुरा (purā) - formerly; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagni's son; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; तेपे (tepe) - performed; महेन्द्रे (mahendre) - on Mahendra; पर्वतोत्तमे (parvatottame) - on the supreme mountain;]
(Having made the earth devoid of Kshatriyas thrice seven times formerly, Jamadagni's son performed penance on Mahendra, the supreme mountain.)
Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni, after ridding the earth of Kshatriyas twenty-one times in the past, performed penance on the great Mahendra mountain.
तदा निःक्षत्रिये लोके भार्गवेण कृते सति। ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रिया राजन्गर्भार्थिन्योऽभिचक्रमुः ॥१-५८-५॥
tadā niḥkṣatriye loke bhārgaveṇa kṛte sati। brāhmaṇānkṣatriyā rājangarbhārthinyo'bhicakramuḥ ॥1-58-5॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; निःक्षत्रिये (niḥkṣatriye) - without kshatriyas; लोके (loke) - in the world; भार्गवेण (bhārgaveṇa) - by Bhargava; कृते (kṛte) - done; सति (sati) - being; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; क्षत्रिया (kṣatriyā) - Kshatriya women; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गर्भार्थिन्यः (garbhārthinyaḥ) - seeking sons; अभिचक्रमुः (abhicakramuḥ) - approached;]
(Then, when the world was without kshatriyas, done by Bhargava, the Kshatriya women, O king, seeking sons, approached the Brahmins.)
Then, when the world was devoid of kshatriyas due to the actions of Bhargava, the Kshatriya women, desiring offspring, approached the Brahmins, O king.
ताभिः सह समापेतुर्ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः। ऋतावृतौ नरव्याघ्र न कामान्नानृतौ तथा ॥१-५८-६॥
tābhiḥ saha samāpeturbrahmaṇāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ| ṛtāvṛtau naravyāghra na kāmānnānṛtau tathā ॥1-58-6॥

(With them, the Brahmins of firm vows arrived, O tiger among men, in truth and conduct, not in desires, nor in falsehood, thus.)

तेभ्यस्तु लेभिरे गर्भान्क्षत्रियास्ताः सहस्रशः। ततः सुषुविरे राजन्क्षत्रियान्वीर्यसंमतान् ॥ कुमारांश्च कुमारीश्च पुनः क्षत्राभिवृद्धये ॥१-५८-७॥
tebhyastu lebhire garbhānkṣatriyāstāḥ sahasraśaḥ। tataḥ suṣuvire rājankṣatriyānvīryasaṃmatān ॥ kumārāṃśca kumārīśca punaḥ kṣatrābhivṛddhaye ॥1-58-7॥
[तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; तु (tu) - indeed; लेभिरे (lebhire) - obtained; गर्भान् (garbhān) - embryos; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kshatriyas; ताः (tāḥ) - they; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुषुविरे (suṣuvire) - gave birth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - Kshatriyas; वीर्यसंमतान् (vīryasaṃmatān) - approved for valor; कुमारान् (kumārān) - sons; च (ca) - and; कुमारीः (kumārīḥ) - daughters; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्षत्राभिवृद्धये (kṣatrābhivṛddhaye) - for the growth of the Kshatriyas;]
(To them indeed, the Kshatriyas obtained embryos by thousands. Then, O king, they gave birth to Kshatriyas approved for valor, sons and daughters, again for the growth of the Kshatriyas.)
To them, the Kshatriyas indeed obtained thousands of embryos. Then, O king, they gave birth to valor-approved Kshatriyas, sons and daughters, for the continued growth of the Kshatriya lineage.
एवं तद्ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रं क्षत्रियासु तपस्विभिः। जातमृध्यत धर्मेण सुदीर्घेणायुषान्वितम् ॥ चत्वारोऽपि तदा वर्णा बभूवुर्ब्राह्मणोत्तराः ॥१-५८-८॥
evaṃ tadbrāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatraṃ kṣatriyāsu tapasvibhiḥ| jātamṛdhyata dharmeṇa sudīrgheṇāyuṣānvitam ॥ catvāro'pi tadā varṇā babhūvurbrāhmaṇottarāḥ ॥1-58-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; तत् (tad) - that; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brahmins; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the Kshatriya; क्षत्रियासु (kṣatriyāsu) - among Kshatriyas; तपस्विभिः (tapasvibhiḥ) - by ascetics; जातम् (jātam) - born; ऋध्यत (ṛdhyata) - prospered; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; सुदीर्घेण (sudīrgheṇa) - long; आयुषा (āyuṣā) - with life; अन्वितम् (anvitam) - endowed; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; अपि (api) - also; तदा (tadā) - then; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - castes; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; ब्राह्मणोत्तराः (brāhmaṇottarāḥ) - Brahmins superior;]
(Thus, that Kshatriya, born among Kshatriyas by Brahmins and ascetics, prospered by dharma, endowed with long life. Then, the four castes also became with Brahmins superior.)
Thus, the Kshatriya class, born and nurtured by Brahmins and ascetics, flourished under the principles of dharma, endowed with long life. At that time, all four castes existed with Brahmins being the foremost.
अभ्यगच्छन्नृतौ नारीं न कामान्नानृतौ तथा। तथैवान्यानि भूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि ॥ ऋतौ दारांश्च गच्छन्ति तदा स्म भरतर्षभ ॥१-५८-९॥
abhyagacchannṛtau nārīṃ na kāmānnānṛtau tathā। tathaivānyāni bhūtāni tiryagyonigatānyapi ॥ ṛtau dārāṃśca gacchanti tadā sma bharatarṣabha ॥1-58-9॥
[अभ्यगच्छन् (abhyagacchan) - approach; ऋतौ (ṛtau) - in season; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; न (na) - not; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; न (na) - not; अनृतौ (anṛtau) - out of season; तथा (tathā) - thus; तथा (tathā) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; तिर्यग्योनिगतानि (tiryagyonigatāni) - born in lower species; अपि (api) - also; ऋतौ (ṛtau) - in season; दारान् (dārān) - wives; च (ca) - and; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; तदा (tadā) - then; स्म (sma) - indeed; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Approach in season woman not desires not out of season thus. Thus indeed other beings born in lower species also. In season wives and go then indeed O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, beings approach their mates in season, not out of desire, and this is true for other creatures born in lower species as well. In season, they go to their wives.
ततोऽवर्धन्त धर्मेण सहस्रशतजीविनः। ताः प्रजाः पृथिवीपाल धर्मव्रतपरायणाः ॥ आधिभिर्व्याधिभिश्चैव विमुक्ताः सर्वशो नराः ॥१-५८-१०॥
tato'vardhanta dharmeṇa sahasraśatajīvinaḥ। tāḥ prajāḥ pṛthivīpāla dharmavrataparāyaṇāḥ ॥ ādhibhirvyādhibhiścaiva vimuktāḥ sarvaśo narāḥ ॥1-58-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवर्धन्त (avardhanta) - grew; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; सहस्रशतजीविनः (sahasraśatajīvinaḥ) - living for hundreds of thousands of years; ताः (tāḥ) - those; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - O protector of the earth; धर्मव्रतपरायणाः (dharmavrataparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to the vow of righteousness; आधिभिः (ādhibhiḥ) - from mental sufferings; व्याधिभिः (vyādhibhiḥ) - from diseases; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - free; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; नराः (narāḥ) - men;]
(Then they grew by righteousness, living for hundreds of thousands of years. Those subjects, O protector of the earth, were devoted to the vow of righteousness, and were completely free from mental sufferings and diseases.)

[अथ (atha) - then; इमां (imāṃ) - this; सागर (sāgara) - ocean; अपाङ्गां (apāṅgāṃ) - fringe; गां (gāṃ) - earth; गजेन्द्र (gajendra) - elephant; गत (gata) - gone; अखिलाम् (akhilām) - entire; अध्यतिष्ठत् (adhyatiṣṭhat) - ruled; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - kings; स (sa) - with; शैल (śaila) - mountains; वन (vana) - forests; काननाम् (kānanām) - groves;]
(Then this earth, fringed by the ocean, entirely gone to the elephant, was ruled again by the kings with mountains, forests, and groves.)

प्रशासति पुनः क्षत्रे धर्मेणेमां वसुन्धराम्। ब्राह्मणाद्यास्तदा वर्णा लेभिरे मुदमुत्तमाम् ॥१-५८-१२॥

(Again, the kshatriya rules this earth with righteousness; then the brahmins and other castes obtained supreme joy.)

कामक्रोधोद्भवान्दोषान्निरस्य च नराधिपाः। दण्डं दण्ड्येषु धर्मेण प्रणयन्तोऽन्वपालयन् ॥१-५८-१३॥
kāmakrodhodbhavāndoṣānnirasya ca narādhipāḥ। daṇḍaṃ daṇḍyeṣu dharmeṇa praṇayanto'nvapālayan ॥1-58-13॥
[काम (kāma) - desire; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; उद्भवान् (udbhavān) - arising; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; निरस्य (nirasya) - removing; च (ca) - and; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - punishment; दण्ड्येषु (daṇḍyeṣu) - on the guilty; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with justice; प्रणयन्तः (praṇayantaḥ) - imposing; अन्वपालयन् (anvapālayan) - protecting;]
(The kings, removing the faults arising from desire and anger, imposed punishment on the guilty with justice and protected (the people).)

तथा धर्मपरे क्षत्रे सहस्राक्षः शतक्रतुः। स्वादु देशे च काले च ववर्षाप्याययन्प्रजाः ॥१-५८-१४॥
tathā dharmapare kṣatre sahasrākṣaḥ śatakratuḥ। svādu deśe ca kāle ca vavarṣāpyāyayanprajāḥ ॥1-58-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; धर्मपरे (dharmapare) - in the supreme duty; क्षत्रे (kṣatre) - in the field; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; देशे (deśe) - in the region; च (ca) - and; काले (kāle) - in time; च (ca) - and; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - rained; आप्याययन् (āpyāyayan) - nourishing; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the creatures;]
(Thus, in the supreme duty field, the thousand-eyed Indra rained sweetly in the region and in time, nourishing the creatures.)

(A child does not die then, O king; nor does anyone know a woman who has not reached youth.)
O King, at that time, no child dies, nor does anyone know a woman who has not yet reached her youth.
एवमायुष्मतीभिस्तु प्रजाभिर्भरतर्षभ। इयं सागरपर्यन्ता समापूर्यत मेदिनी ॥१-५८-१६॥
evam āyuṣmatībhistu prajābhirbhartarṣabha। iyaṃ sāgaraparyantā samāpūryata medinī ॥1-58-16॥

(Thus, O best of the Bharatas, this earth, bounded by the ocean, was filled by the long-lived subjects.)

ईजिरे च महायज्ञैः क्षत्रिया बहुदक्षिणैः। साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदान्विप्राश्चाधीयते तदा ॥१-५८-१७॥

(The warriors worshipped with great sacrifices and many gifts. The learned studied the Vedas with limbs and Upanishads then.)

न च विक्रीणते ब्रह्म ब्राह्मणाः स्म तदा नृप। न च शूद्रसमाभ्याशे वेदानुच्चारयन्त्युत ॥१-५८-१८॥
na ca vikrīṇate brahma brāhmaṇāḥ sma tadā nṛpa। na ca śūdrasamābhyāśe vedānucchārayantyuta ॥1-58-18॥

कारयन्तः कृषिं गोभिस्तथा वैश्याः क्षिताविह। न गामयुञ्जन्त धुरि कृशाङ्गाश्चाप्यजीवयन् ॥१-५८-१९॥
kārayantaḥ kṛṣiṃ gobhistathā vaiśyāḥ kṣitāviha| na gāmayuñjanta dhuri kṛśāṅgāścāpyajīvayan ॥1-58-19॥

(The merchants, making agriculture with cows thus on earth here, did not yoke emaciated cows to the yoke and also sustained them.)

(Why would the creator of the world, O Bhārata, not understand completely the thoughts of the worlds of gods and demons?)
O Bhārata, why would the creator of the universe not fully comprehend the thoughts of all the worlds, including those of gods and demons?
तमुवाच महाराज भूमिं भूमिपतिर्विभुः। प्रभवः सर्वभूतानामीशः शम्भुः प्रजापतिः ॥१-५८-४३॥
tamuvāca mahārāja bhūmiṃ bhūmipativibhuḥ। prabhavaḥ sarvabhūtānāmīśaḥ śambhuḥ prajāpatiḥ ॥1-58-43॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भूमिं (bhūmiṃ) - earth; भूमिपतिः (bhūmipatiḥ) - lord of the earth; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the omnipresent; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - source; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; शम्भुः (śambhuḥ) - Shambhu; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - progenitor;]
(The omnipresent lord of the earth, the source of all beings, Shambhu, the progenitor, said to him, O great king, the earth.)
The omnipresent lord of the earth, Shambhu, who is the source and progenitor of all beings, addressed him, saying, 'O great king, the earth.'
यदर्थमसि सम्प्राप्ता मत्सकाशं वसुन्धरे। तदर्थं संनियोक्ष्यामि सर्वानेव दिवौकसः ॥१-५८-४४॥
yadarthamasi samprāptā matsakāśaṃ vasundhare। tadarthaṃ saṃniyokṣyāmi sarvāneva divaukasaḥ ॥1-58-44॥
[यदर्थम् (yadartham) - for which purpose; असि (asi) - you are; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - arrived; मत्सकाशम् (matsakāśam) - to my presence; वसुन्धरे (vasundhare) - O Earth; तदर्थम् (tadartham) - for that purpose; संनियोक्ष्यामि (saṃniyokṣyāmi) - I will engage; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the celestials;]
(For which purpose you have arrived to my presence, O Earth, for that purpose I will engage all the celestials indeed.)
O Earth, you have come to me for a purpose, and for that purpose, I will engage all the celestials.
इत्युक्त्वा स महीं देवो ब्रह्मा राजन्विसृज्य च। आदिदेश तदा सर्वान्विबुधान्भूतकृत्स्वयम् ॥१-५८-४५॥
ityuktvā sa mahīṁ devo brahmā rājanvisṛjya ca। ādideśa tadā sarvānvibudhānbhūtakṛtsvayam ॥1-58-45॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; महीं (mahīm) - earth; देवः (devaḥ) - god; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahma; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having released; च (ca) - and; आदिदेश (ādideśa) - commanded; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; विबुधान् (vibudhān) - gods; भूतकृत् (bhūtakṛt) - creator of beings; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the god Brahma, O king, having released the earth, then commanded all the gods, the creator of beings himself.)
After speaking thus, the god Brahma, having released the earth, commanded all the gods himself, O king, as the creator of beings.
अस्या भूमेर्निरसितुं भारं भागैः पृथक्पृथक्। अस्यामेव प्रसूयध्वं विरोधायेति चाब्रवीत् ॥१-५८-४६॥
asyā bhūmer nirasituṃ bhāraṃ bhāgaiḥ pṛthakpṛthak। asyām eva prasūyadhvaṃ virodhāyeti cābravīt ॥1-58-46॥
[अस्या (asyā) - of this; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - earth; निरसितुं (nirasituṃ) - to remove; भारं (bhāram) - burden; भागैः (bhāgaiḥ) - by parts; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; पृथक् (pṛthak) - individually; अस्याम् (asyām) - in this; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रसूयध्वं (prasūyadhvaṃ) - be born; विरोधाय (virodhāya) - for opposition; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Of this earth, to remove the burden by parts separately, indeed be born in this for opposition, thus and said.)
He said, "To remove the burden of this earth, be born separately in parts for opposition in this very place."
तथैव च समानीय गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणान्। उवाच भगवान्सर्वानिदं वचनमुत्तमम् ॥ स्वैरंशैः सम्प्रसूयध्वं यथेष्टं मानुषेष्विति ॥१-५८-४७॥
tathaiva ca samānīya gandharvāpsarasāṃ gaṇān। uvāca bhagavānsarvānidaṃ vacanamutamam ॥ svairaṃśaiḥ samprasūyadhvaṃ yatheṣṭaṃ mānuṣeṣviti ॥1-58-47॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; समानीय (samānīya) - having assembled; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - Gandharvas; अप्सरसां (apsarasāṃ) - Apsaras; गणान् (gaṇān) - groups; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; स्वैरंशैः (svairaṃśaiḥ) - with your own parts; सम्प्रसूयध्वं (samprasūyadhvaṃ) - procreate; यथेष्टं (yatheṣṭaṃ) - as you wish; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among humans; इति (iti) - thus;]
(In the same way, having assembled the groups of Gandharvas and Apsaras, the Lord said to all: "Procreate with your own parts as you wish among humans.")
Similarly, the Lord gathered the groups of Gandharvas and Apsaras and addressed them with these excellent words: "Procreate freely with your own parts as you desire among humans."
अथ शक्रादयः सर्वे श्रुत्वा सुरगुरोर्वचः। तथ्यमर्थ्यं च पथ्यं च तस्य ते जगृहुस्तदा ॥१-५८-४८॥
atha śakrādayaḥ sarve śrutvā suragurorvacaḥ। tathyamarthyaṃ ca pathyaṃ ca tasya te jagṛhustadā ॥1-58-48॥
[अथ (atha) - then; शक्रादयः (śakrādayaḥ) - Indra and others; सर्वे (sarve) - all; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुरगुरोः (suraguroḥ) - of the guru of the gods; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - truthful; अर्थ्यम् (arthyam) - beneficial; च (ca) - and; पथ्यम् (pathyam) - wholesome; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; ते (te) - they; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - accepted; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Indra and others, having heard the words of the guru of the gods, accepted them as truthful, beneficial, and wholesome.)
Then all the gods, including Indra, listened to the words of their guru and accepted them as true, beneficial, and wholesome.
अथ ते सर्वशोंऽशैः स्वैर्गन्तुं भूमिं कृतक्षणाः। नारायणममित्रघ्नं वैकुण्ठमुपचक्रमुः ॥१-५८-४९॥
atha te sarvaśoṃ'śaiḥ svairgantuṃ bhūmiṃ kṛtakṣaṇāḥ। nārāyaṇamamitraghnaṃ vaikuṇṭhamupacakramuḥ ॥1-58-49॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; अंशैः (aṃśaiḥ) - with parts; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - own; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - earth; कृतक्षणाः (kṛtakṣaṇāḥ) - prepared; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Narayana; अमित्रघ्नम् (amitraghnam) - destroyer of enemies; वैकुण्ठम् (vaikuṇṭham) - Vaikuntha; उपचक्रमुः (upacakramuḥ) - they began;]
(Then they, completely with their own parts, prepared to go to the earth, began to approach Narayana, the destroyer of enemies, in Vaikuntha.)
Then they, having prepared themselves completely, began their journey to the earth to approach Narayana, the destroyer of enemies, in Vaikuntha.
यः स चक्रगदापाणिः पीतवासासितप्रभः। पद्मनाभः सुरारिघ्नः पृथुचार्वञ्चितेक्षणः ॥१-५८-५०॥
yaḥ sa cakragadāpāṇiḥ pītavāsāsitaprabhaḥ। padmanābhaḥ surārighnaḥ pṛthucārvañcitekṣaṇaḥ ॥1-58-50॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; चक्रगदापाणिः (cakragadāpāṇiḥ) - holding discus and mace; पीतवासाः (pītavāsāḥ) - wearing yellow garments; असितप्रभः (asitaprabhaḥ) - dark-hued; पद्मनाभः (padmanābhaḥ) - lotus-naveled; सुरारिघ्नः (surārighnaḥ) - destroyer of gods' foes; पृथुचार्वञ्चितेक्षणः (pṛthucārvañcitekṣaṇaḥ) - having broad, lovely, curved eyes;]
(He who holds the discus and mace, wears yellow garments, is dark-hued, lotus-naveled, destroyer of gods' foes, and has broad, lovely, curved eyes.)
He is the one who holds the discus and mace, wears yellow garments, has a dark hue, a lotus at his navel, destroys the enemies of the gods, and possesses broad, charming, curved eyes.
तं भुवः शोधनायेन्द्र उवाच पुरुषोत्तमम्। अंशेनावतरस्वेति तथेत्याह च तं हरिः ॥१-५८-५१॥
taṁ bhuvaḥ śodhanāyendra uvāca puruṣottamam। aṁśenāvatarasveti tathetyāha ca taṁ hariḥ ॥1-58-51॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - of the earth; शोधनाय (śodhanāya) - for the purification; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; उवाच (uvāca) - said; पुरुषोत्तमम् (puruṣottamam) - to the Supreme Person; अंशेन (aṁśena) - by a part; अवतरस्व (avatarasva) - descend; इति (iti) - thus; तथा (tathā) - so; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; च (ca) - and; तं (taṁ) - to him; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
(Indra said to the Supreme Person for the purification of the earth, "Descend by a part." So said Hari to him.)
Indra requested the Supreme Person to descend to purify the earth, and Hari agreed to do so by manifesting a part of himself.
