ततो गच्छन्महाबाहुरेकोऽमात्यान्विसृज्य तान्। नापश्यदाश्रमे तस्मिंस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥१-६५-१॥
tato gacchanmahābāhurekaḥ' mātyānvisṛjya tān। nāpaśyadāśrame tasmiṁstamṛṣiṁ saṁśitavratam ॥1-65-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छन् (gacchan) - going; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अमात्यान् (amātyān) - ministers; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having dismissed; तान् (tān) - them; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; आश्रम (āśrama) - hermitage; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; संशितव्रतम् (saṁśitavratam) - of firm vows;]
(Then, the mighty-armed one, going alone, having dismissed the ministers, did not see that sage of firm vows in that hermitage.)
Then, the mighty-armed hero, after dismissing his ministers, went alone and did not find the sage of firm vows in the hermitage.
सोऽपश्यमानस्तमृषिं शून्यं दृष्ट्वा तमाश्रमम्। उवाच क इहेत्युच्चैर्वनं संनादयन्निव ॥१-६५-२॥
so'paśyamānastamṛṣiṃ śūnyaṃ dṛṣṭvā tamāśramam| uvāca ka ihetyuccairvanaṃ saṃnādayanniva ॥1-65-2॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यमानः (apaśyamānaḥ) - not seeing; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; शून्यम् (śūnyam) - empty; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; उवाच (uvāca) - said; कः (kaḥ) - who; इह (iha) - here; इति (iti) - thus; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; वनम् (vanam) - forest; संनादयन् (saṃnādayan) - resounding; इव (iva) - as if;]
(He, not seeing that sage, having seen that empty hermitage, said loudly, 'Who is here?' as if resounding the forest.)
He looked around and, not seeing the sage, observed the empty hermitage. He called out loudly, 'Who is here?' making the forest echo with his voice.
श्रुत्वाथ तस्य तं शब्दं कन्या श्रीरिव रूपिणी। निश्चक्रामाश्रमात्तस्मात्तापसीवेषधारिणी ॥१-६५-३॥
śrutvātha tasya taṃ śabdaṃ kanyā śrīriva rūpiṇī। niścakrāmāśramāttasmāttāpasīveṣadhāriṇī ॥1-65-3॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अथ (atha) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; तं (taṃ) - that; शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - sound; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; श्रीरिव (śrīriva) - like Lakshmi; रूपिणी (rūpiṇī) - beautiful; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - came out; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; तापसी (tāpasī) - ascetic; वेष (veṣa) - attire; धारिणी (dhāriṇī) - wearing;]
(Having heard that sound of his, the girl, beautiful like Lakshmi, came out from the hermitage from there, wearing ascetic attire.)
Upon hearing his sound, the girl, as beautiful as Lakshmi, emerged from the hermitage, dressed in ascetic garments.
सा तं दृष्ट्वैव राजानं दुःषन्तमसितेक्षणा। स्वागतं त इति क्षिप्रमुवाच प्रतिपूज्य च ॥१-६५-४॥
sā taṃ dṛṣṭvaiva rājānaṃ duḥṣantamasitekṣaṇā। svāgataṃ ta iti kṣipramuvāca pratipūjya ca ॥1-65-4॥

(She, having just seen King Duṣyanta, the dark-eyed one, quickly said, "Welcome to you," having honored him.)
Upon seeing King Duṣyanta, the dark-eyed lady quickly greeted him with respect, saying, "Welcome to you."
आसनेनार्चयित्वा च पाद्येनार्घ्येण चैव हि। पप्रच्छानामयं राजन्कुशलं च नराधिपम् ॥१-६५-५॥
āsanena arcayitvā ca pādyena arghyeṇa ca eva hi। papraccha nāma yaṃ rājan kuśalaṃ ca narādhipam ॥1-65-5॥
[आसनेन (āsanena) - with seat; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; पाद्येन (pādyena) - with water for feet; अर्घ्येण (arghyeṇa) - with offering; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; नाम (nāma) - name; यम् (yam) - whom; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; च (ca) - and; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king;]
(With a seat, having worshipped, and with water for feet and offering indeed, certainly asked the name, O king, welfare and king.)
After offering a seat and worshipping with water for the feet and an offering, he certainly asked the king about his name and welfare, O ruler.
यथावदर्चयित्वा सा पृष्ट्वा चानामयं तदा। उवाच स्मयमानेव किं कार्यं क्रियतामिति ॥१-६५-६॥
yathāvadarcayitvā sā pṛṣṭvā cānāmayaṃ tadā| uvāca smayamāneva kiṃ kāryaṃ kriyatāmiti ॥1-65-6॥

(Properly having worshipped and having asked about welfare, she then said smiling as if, "What task should be done?")
After properly worshipping and inquiring about the welfare, she then, as if smiling, said, "What task should be done?"
तामब्रवीत्ततो राजा कन्यां मधुरभाषिणीम्। दृष्ट्वा सर्वानवद्याङ्गीं यथावत्प्रतिपूजितः ॥१-६५-७॥
tām abravīt tato rājā kanyāṃ madhurabhāṣiṇīm. dṛṣṭvā sarvānavadyāṅgīṃ yathāvat pratipūjitaḥ ॥1-65-7॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; कन्यां (kanyām) - to the maiden; मधुरभाषिणीम् (madhurabhāṣiṇīm) - sweet-speaking; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; अनवद्याङ्गीम् (anavadyāṅgīm) - faultless-bodied; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; प्रतिपूजितः (pratipūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(Then the king said to the sweet-speaking maiden, having seen all her faultless body, properly honored.)
The king, having seen the maiden who spoke sweetly and was honored properly, addressed her, noting her flawless form.
आगतोऽहं महाभागमृषिं कण्वमुपासितुम्। क्व गतो भगवान्भद्रे तन्ममाचक्ष्व शोभने ॥१-६५-८॥
āgato'haṃ mahābhāgamṛṣiṃ kaṇvamupāsitum। kva gato bhagavānbhadre tanmamācakṣva śobhane ॥1-65-8॥

(I have arrived to visit the greatly fortunate sage Kaṇva. O gentle lady, where has the revered one gone? Tell that to me, O beautiful one.)
I have come to see the greatly revered sage Kaṇva. O gentle lady, could you please tell me where the revered one has gone, O beautiful one?
शकुन्तलोवाच॥

गतः पिता मे भगवान्फलान्याहर्तुमाश्रमात्। मुहूर्तं सम्प्रतीक्षस्व द्रक्ष्यस्येनमिहागतम् ॥१-६५-९॥
gataḥ pitā me bhagavān phalāny āhartum āśramāt। muhūrtaṃ sampratīkṣasva drakṣyasy enam ihāgatam ॥1-65-9॥
[गतः (gataḥ) - gone; पिता (pitā) - father; मे (me) - my; भगवान् (bhagavān) - revered; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to fetch; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; सम्प्रतीक्षस्व (sampratīkṣasva) - wait; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; एनम् (enam) - him; इह (iha) - here; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]

अपश्यमानस्तमृषिं तया चोक्तस्तथा नृपः। तां च दृष्ट्वा वरारोहां श्रीमतीं चारुहासिनीम् ॥१-६५-१०॥
apaśyamānastamṛṣiṃ tayā coktastathā nṛpaḥ। tāṃ ca dṛṣṭvā varārohāṃ śrīmatīṃ cāruhāsinīm ॥1-65-10॥
[अपश्यमानः (apaśyamānaḥ) - not-seeing; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; तया (tayā) - by her; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तथा (tathā) - thus; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; तां (tāṃ) - her; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वरारोहाम् (varārohām) - beautiful-bodied; श्रीमतीम् (śrīmatīm) - prosperous; चारुहासिनीम् (cāruhāsinīm) - charming-smiled;]
(The king, not seeing that sage, was thus spoken to by her. And having seen her, the beautiful-bodied, prosperous, charming-smiled.)
The king, unable to see the sage, was addressed by her. Upon seeing her, he noticed her beautiful form, prosperity, and charming smile.
विभ्राजमानां वपुषा तपसा च दमेन च। रूपयौवनसम्पन्नामित्युवाच महीपतिः ॥१-६५-११॥
vibhrājamānāṃ vapuṣā tapasā ca damena ca। rūpayauvanasampannāmityuvāca mahīpatiḥ ॥1-65-11॥
[विभ्राजमानां (vibhrājamānām) - shining; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with form; तपसा (tapasā) - with austerity; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - with restraint; च (ca) - and; रूपयौवनसम्पन्नाम् (rūpayauvanasampannām) - endowed with beauty and youth; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(Shining with form, with austerity and restraint, endowed with beauty and youth, thus said the king.)
The king, observing her shining form, her austerity, restraint, and her beauty and youth, spoke thus.
कासि कस्यासि सुश्रोणि किमर्थं चागता वनम्। एवंरूपगुणोपेता कुतस्त्वमसि शोभने ॥१-६५-१२॥
kāsi kasyāsi suśroṇi kimarthaṃ cāgatā vanam। evaṃrūpaguṇopetā kutastvamasi śobhane ॥1-65-12॥
[का (kā) - who; असि (asi) - are you; कस्य (kasya) - whose; असि (asi) - are you; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; च (ca) - and; आगता (āgatā) - have you come; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; रूप (rūpa) - form; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; उपेता (upetā) - endowed; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; शोभने (śobhane) - O lovely one;]
(Who are you, whose are you, O beautiful-hipped one? For what purpose have you come to the forest? Endowed with such form and qualities, from where are you, O lovely one?)
Who are you and to whom do you belong, O beautiful-hipped lady? What is the reason for your arrival in the forest? With such beauty and qualities, where do you come from, O charming one?
दर्शनादेव हि शुभे त्वया मेऽपहृतं मनः। इच्छामि त्वामहं ज्ञातुं तन्ममाचक्ष्व शोभने ॥१-६५-१३॥
darśanādeva hi śubhe tvayā me'pahṛtaṃ manaḥ. icchāmi tvāmahaṃ jñātuṃ tanmamācakṣva śobhane ॥1-65-13॥
[दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - by sight; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मे (me) - my; अपहृतं (apahṛtaṃ) - stolen; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - my; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one;]
(Indeed, by sight, O auspicious one, my mind has been stolen by you. I wish to know you; tell me that, O beautiful one.)
O auspicious one, just by seeing you, my mind has been captivated by you. I wish to know you; please tell me about yourself, O beautiful one.
एवमुक्ता तदा कन्या तेन राज्ञा तदाश्रमे। उवाच हसती वाक्यमिदं सुमधुराक्षरम् ॥१-६५-१४॥
evamuktā tadā kanyā tena rājñā tadāśrame| uvāca hasatī vākyamidaṃ sumadhurākṣaram ॥1-65-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; तदा (tadā) - then; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; तेन (tena) - by him; राज्ञा (rājñā) - king; तदाश्रमे (tadāśrame) - in that hermitage; उवाच (uvāca) - said; हसती (hasatī) - smiling; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; इदं (idaṃ) - these; सुमधुराक्षरम् (sumadhurākṣaram) - very sweetly;]
(Thus spoken, then the girl, by the king, in that hermitage, said smiling these words very sweetly.)

कण्वष्याहं भगवतो दुःषन्त दुहिता मता। तपस्विनो धृतिमतो धर्मज्ञस्य यशस्विनः ॥१-६५-१५॥
kaṇvaṣyāhaṃ bhagavato duḥṣanta duhitā matā। tapasvino dhṛtimato dharmajñasya yaśasvinaḥ ॥1-65-15॥
[कण्वष्य (kaṇvaṣya) - of Kaṇva; अहम् (aham) - I; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the venerable; दुःषन्त (duḥṣanta) - Duḥṣanta; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; मता (matā) - considered; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - of the ascetic; धृतिमतः (dhṛtimataḥ) - of the steadfast; धर्मज्ञस्य (dharmajñasya) - of the knower of dharma; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - of the illustrious;]
(I am considered the daughter of the venerable Duḥṣanta, of the ascetic, steadfast, knower of dharma, and illustrious Kaṇva.)

ऊर्ध्वरेता महाभागो भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः। चलेद्धि वृत्ताद्धर्मोऽपि न चलेत्संशितव्रतः ॥१-६५-१६॥
ūrdhvaretā mahābhāgo bhagavāṁllokapūjitaḥ। caleddhi vṛttāddharmo'pi na caletsaṁśitavrataḥ ॥1-65-16॥
[ऊर्ध्वरेता (ūrdhvaretā) - one with upward-flowing energy; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; लोकपूजितः (lokapūjitaḥ) - worshipped by the world; चलेत् (calet) - would deviate; हि (hi) - indeed; वृत्तात् (vṛttāt) - from conduct; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; चलेत् (calet) - would deviate; संशितव्रतः (saṁśitavrataḥ) - one with firm vows;]
(One with upward-flowing energy, greatly fortunate, the blessed one, worshipped by the world, would indeed deviate from conduct; even righteousness would not deviate, one with firm vows.)
The blessed one, who is greatly fortunate and worshipped by the world, possesses upward-flowing energy and firm vows, and would indeed deviate from conduct; however, even righteousness would not deviate.
कथं त्वं तस्य दुहिता सम्भूता वरवर्णिनी। संशयो मे महानत्र तं मे छेत्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१-६५-१७॥
kathaṁ tvaṁ tasya duhitā sambhūtā varavarṇinī। saṁśayo me mahānattra taṁ me chettumihārhasi ॥1-65-17॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तस्य (tasya) - his; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; सम्भूता (sambhūtā) - born; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - beautiful; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; मे (me) - my; महान् (mahān) - great; अत्र (atra) - here; तम् (tam) - that; मे (me) - my; छेत्तुम् (chettum) - to remove; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(How are you, his daughter, born beautiful? My doubt is great here; you should remove that for me here.)
How did you, his beautiful daughter, come to be born? I have a great doubt here, and you should clear it for me.

यथायमागमो मह्यं यथा चेदमभूत्पुरा। शृणु राजन्यथातत्त्वं यथास्मि दुहिता मुनेः ॥१-६५-१८॥
yathāyamāgamo mahyaṃ yathā cedamabhūtpurā। śṛṇu rājanyathātattvaṃ yathāsmi duhitā muneḥ ॥1-65-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; अयम् (ayam) - this; आगमः (āgamaḥ) - arrival; मम (mama) - my; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; पुरा (purā) - formerly; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; यथा (yathā) - as; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage;]
(As this arrival is to me, and as this was formerly, listen O king, to the truth as I am the daughter of the sage.)
O king, listen to the truth of how this arrival came to me and how I am the daughter of the sage, as it was in the past.
ऋषिः कश्चिदिहागम्य मम जन्माभ्यचोदयत्। तस्मै प्रोवाच भगवान्यथा तच्छृणु पार्थिव ॥१-६५-१९॥
ṛṣiḥ kaścidihāgamya mama janmābhyacodayat। tasmai provāca bhagavānyathā tacchṛṇu pārthiva ॥1-65-19॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; इह (iha) - here; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; मम (mama) - my; जन्म (janma) - birth; अभ्यचोदयत् (abhyacodayat) - inquired; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; यथा (yathā) - as; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(A sage, having come here, inquired about my birth. To him, the Lord said, "Hear that, O king.")
A certain sage came here and asked about my birth. To him, the Lord replied, "Listen to that, O king."
तप्यमानः किल पुरा विश्वामित्रो महत्तपः। सुभृशं तापयामास शक्रं सुरगणेश्वरम् ॥१-६५-२०॥
tapyamānaḥ kila purā viśvāmitro mahattapaḥ। subhṛśaṃ tāpayāmāsa śakraṃ suragaṇeśvaram ॥1-65-20॥
[तप्यमानः (tapyamānaḥ) - burning; किल (kila) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; महत्तपः (mahattapaḥ) - great penance; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - intensely; तापयामास (tāpayāmāsa) - tormented; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; सुरगणेश्वरम् (suragaṇeśvaram) - lord of the gods;]
(Burning indeed formerly, Viśvāmitra (with) great penance intensely tormented Indra, lord of the gods.)
Once upon a time, Viśvāmitra, through his great penance, intensely tormented Indra, the lord of the gods.
तपसा दीप्तवीर्योऽयं स्थानान्मां च्यावयेदिति। भीतः पुरंदरस्तस्मान्मेनकामिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-६५-२१॥
tapasā dīptavīryo'yaṃ sthānānmāṃ cyāvayediti| bhītaḥ puraṃdarastasmānmenakāmidamabravīt ॥1-65-21॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; दीप्तवीर्यः (dīptavīryaḥ) - with blazing energy; अयम् (ayam) - this; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from position; माम् (mām) - me; च्यावयेत् (cyāvayet) - might displace; इति (iti) - thus; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मेनकाम् (menakām) - to Menaka; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]

(From the forest, the fragrant wind was blowing; at that time, tempting that sage. Thus saying, and having arranged there, then went to the hermitage of Kauśika.)
