जनमेजय उवाच॥
Janamejaya said.
श्रुतस्त्वत्तो मया विप्र पूर्वेषां सम्भवो महान्।उदाराश्चापि वंशेऽस्मिन्राजानो मे परिश्रुताः ॥०१-९०-१॥
O brāhmaṇa, I have heard from you of the great origin of the former ones; and also, the noble kings in this lineage are well-known to me. (01-90-1)
किं तु लघ्वर्थसंयुक्तं प्रियाख्यानं न मामति।प्रीणात्यतो भवान्भूयो विस्तरेण ब्रवीतु मे ॥०१-९०-२॥
But the brief account of the dear story does not satisfy me. Therefore, please tell me again in detail. (01-90-2)
एतामेव कथां दिव्यामा प्रजापतितो मनोः।तेषामाजननं पुण्यं कस्य न प्रीतिमावहेत् ॥०१-९०-३॥
Who would not feel delight in hearing this very divine story, from Prajāpati to Manu, describing their holy origin? (1-90-3)
सद्धर्मगुणमाहात्म्यैरभिवर्धितमुत्तमम्।विष्टभ्य लोकांस्त्रीनेषां यशः स्फीतमवस्थितम् ॥०१-९०-४॥
By the greatness of the qualities of true dharma, the highest (thing) is manifested; their fame, supporting the three worlds, is firmly and greatly established. (01-90-4)
गुणप्रभाववीर्यौजःसत्त्वोत्साहवतामहम्।न तृप्यामि कथां शृण्वन्नमृतास्वादसंमिताम् ॥०१-९०-५॥
I am never satiated by hearing the story of those endowed with qualities, influence, energy, strength, clarity, and enthusiasm, for it is like tasting nectar. (01-90-5)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
शृणु राजन् पुरा सम्यङ् मया द्वैपायनात् श्रुतम्। प्रोच्यमानम् इदं कृत्स्नं स्ववंशजननं शुभम् ॥०१-९०-६॥
O king, listen to this auspicious narration of the entire origin of your own lineage, which I once heard directly from Dvaipayana (Vyasa), as it is being told. (01-90-6)
दक्षस्यादितिः।अदितेर्विवस्वान्।विवस्वतो मनुः।मनोरिला।इलायाः पुरूरवाः।पुरूरवस आयुः।आयुषो नहुषः।नहुषस्य ययातिः॥०१-९०-००७॥
From Dakṣa was born Aditi; from Aditi, Vivasvan; from Vivasvan, Manu; from Manu, Ilā; from Ilā, Purūravas; from Purūravas, Āyu; from Āyu, Nahuṣa; from Nahuṣa, Yayāti. (01-90-007)
ययातेर्द्वे भार्ये बभूवतुः।उशनसो दुहिता देवयानी वृषपर्वणश्च दुहिता शर्मिष्ठा नाम।अत्रानुवंशो भवति॥०१-९०-००८॥
Yayāti had two wives. Ushanas' daughter was Devayani, and Vrishaparvan's daughter was named Sharmishtha. Here follows the genealogy. (01-90-008)
यदुं च तुर्वसुं चैव देवयानी व्यजायत।द्रुह्युं चानुं च पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ॥०१-९०-९॥
Devayani gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu; Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu, Anu, and Puru. (01-90-9)
तत्र यदोर्यादवाः।पूरोः पौरवाः॥०१-९०-०१०॥
There were the Yādavas, the descendants of Yadu, and the Pauravas, the descendants of Puru. (01-90-010)
पूरोर्भार्या कौसल्या नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे जनमेजयो नाम।यस्त्रीनश्वमेधानाजहार।विश्वजिता चेष्ट्वा वनं प्रविवेश॥०१-९०-०११॥
Pūru's wife was named Kausalya. In her, his son named Janamejaya was born. He performed three Aśvamedha sacrifices. Having also performed the Viśvajit sacrifice, he entered the forest. (01-90-011)
जनमेजयः खल्वनन्तां नामोपयेमे माधवीम्।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे प्राचिन्वान्।यः प्राचीं दिशं जिगाय यावत्सूर्योदयात्।ततस्तस्य प्राचिन्वत्वम्॥०१-९०-०१२॥
Janamejaya indeed married Mādhavī named Anantā. From her, his son Prācinvān was born. He conquered the eastern direction as far as the sunrise. Therefore, he was called Prācinvān. (01-90-012)
प्राचिन्वान्खल्वश्मकीमुपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे संयातिः॥०१-९०-०१३॥
The elder, indeed, married Aśmakī; by her, his son Saṃyāti was born. (01-90-013)
संयातिः खलु दृषद्वतो दुहितरं वराङ्गीं नामोपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अहम्पातिः॥०१-९०-०१४॥
Saṃyāti, indeed, took to wife Dṛṣadvata's beautiful-limbed daughter named Varāṅgī. In her, his son was born—myself, the lord. (01-90-014)
अहम्पातिस्तु खलु कृतवीर्यदुहितरमुपयेमे भानुमतीं नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे सार्वभौमः॥०१-९०-०१५॥
But I, the king, indeed married Bhānumatī, the daughter of Kritavīrya by name. In her, Sārvabhauma was born of him. (01-90-015)
सार्वभौमः खलु जित्वाजहार कैकेयीं सुनन्दां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे जयत्सेनः॥०१-९०-०१६॥
The universal sovereign indeed, having conquered, took Kaikeyi, whose name was Sunanda, as his wife. In her, his son Jayatsena was born. (01-90-016)
जयत्सेनः खलु वैदर्भीमुपयेमे सुषुवां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अराचीनः॥०१-९०-०१७॥
Jayatsena indeed married Vaiderbhī, named Suṣuvā. In her, his son Arācīna was born. (01-90-017)
अराचीनोऽपि वैदर्भीमेवापरामुपयेमे मर्यादां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे महाभौमः॥०१-९०-०१८॥
Although originating from the east, he married another lady from Vidarbha, named Maryada. From her, his son Mahabhauma was born. (01-90-018)
महाभौमः खलु प्रासेनजितीमुपयेमे सुयज्ञां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अयुतनायी।यः पुरुषमेधानामयुतमानयत्।तदस्यायुतनायित्वम्॥०१-९०-०१९॥
The great king indeed married Suyajñā, daughter of Prasena-jit, by name. In her, his son Ayutanāyī was born, who brought ten thousand human sacrifices. That was his title as Ayutanāyī. (01-90-019)
अयुतनायी खलु पृथुश्रवसो दुहितरमुपयेमे भासां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अक्रोधनः॥०१-९०-०२०॥
Ayutanāyī indeed married the daughter of Pṛthuśravas, whose name was Bhāsā. By her, a son was born to him, named Akrōdhana. (01-90-020)
अक्रोधनः खलु कालिङ्गीं करण्डुं नामोपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे देवातिथिः॥०१-९०-०२१॥
Akrodhana indeed married a Kaliṅga woman named Karaṇḍu. From her, his son Devātithi was born. (01-90-021)
देवातिथिः खलु वैदेहीमुपयेमे मर्यादां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे ऋचः॥०१-९०-०२२॥
Indeed, the divine guest married Vaidehī, whose name was Maryādā. In her, his son Ṛc was born. (01-90-022)
ऋचः खल्वाङ्गेयीमुपयेमे सुदेवां नाम।तस्यां पुत्रमजनयदृक्षम्॥०१-९०-०२३॥
Ricaḥ, indeed, married Āṅgeyī named Sudēvā. In her, he begot a son, Ṛkṣa. (01-90-023)
ऋक्षः खलु तक्षकदुहितरमुपयेमे ज्वालां नाम।तस्यां पुत्रं मतिनारं नामोत्पादयामास॥०१-९०-०२४॥
Ṛkṣa indeed married Jvālā, the daughter of Takṣaka. In her, he begot a son named Matināra. (01-90-024)
मतिनारः खलु सरस्वत्यां द्वादशवार्षिकं सत्रमाजहार॥०१-९०-०२५॥
Matinara indeed performed a twelve-year sacrificial session on the Sarasvatī river. (01-90-025)
निवृत्ते च सत्रे सरस्वत्यभिगम्य तं भर्तारं वरयामास।तस्यां पुत्रमजनयत्तंसुं नाम॥०१-९०-०२६॥
After the sacrifice had ended, Sarasvatī approached and chose him as her husband. From her, a son named Sum was born. (01-90-026)
अत्रानुवंशो भवति॥०१-९०-०२७॥
Here is the genealogy. (01-90-027)
तंसुं सरस्वती पुत्रं मतिनारादजीजनत्।इलिनं जनयामास कालिन्द्यां तंसुरात्मजम् ॥०१-९०-२८॥
Matinārada begot Taṁsu, the son of Sarasvatī. Ilina, the son of Taṁsu, was born of Kālinidī. (01-90-28)
इलिनस्तु रथन्तर्यां दुःषन्ताद्यान्पञ्च पुत्रानजनयत्॥०१-९०-०२९॥
But Ilina begot five sons, including Duḥṣanta, in Rathantari. (01-90-029)
दुःषन्तः खलु विश्वामित्रदुहितरं शकुन्तलां नामोपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे भरतः।तत्र श्लोकौ भवतः॥०१-९०-०३०॥
King Duḥṣanta indeed married Śakuntalā, the daughter of Viśvāmitra. In her, his son Bharata was born. There are two verses (on this). (01-90-030)
माता भस्त्रा पितुः पुत्रो येन जातः स एव सः।भरस्व पुत्रं दुःषन्त मावमंस्थाः शकुन्तलाम् ॥०१-९०-३१॥
The mother is just the womb; the father is the source—the son is born from whom, he is truly his. Accept your son, Duṣyanta, do not look down upon Śakuntalā. (01-90-31)
रेतोधाः पुत्र उन्नयति नरदेव यमक्षयात्।त्वं चास्य धाता गर्भस्य सत्यमाह शकुन्तला ॥०१-९०-३२॥
The father brings the son back from the realm of Yama, O king, and you are indeed the sustainer of his life in the womb. Śakuntalā has spoken the truth. (01-90-32)
ततोऽस्य भरतत्वम्॥०१-९०-०३३॥
Then he attained the sovereignty of Bharata. (01-90-033)
भरतः खलु काशेयीमुपयेमे सार्वसेनीं सुनन्दां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे भुमन्युः॥०१-९०-०३४॥
Bharata indeed married Kāśeyī, the daughter of Sarvasena, named Sunandā. To her, his son Bhūmanyu was born. (01-90-034)
भुमन्युः खलु दाशार्हीमुपयेमे जयां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे सुहोत्रः॥०१-९०-०३५॥
Bhumanyu indeed married a Dasharha lady named Jayā. In her, his son Suhotra was born. (01-90-035)
सुहोत्रः खल्विक्ष्वाकुकन्यामुपयेमे सुवर्णां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे हस्ती।य इदं हास्तिनपुरं मापयामास।एतदस्य हास्तिनपुरत्वम्॥०१-९०-०३६॥
Suhotra indeed married the Ikshvaku princess named Suvarna. She bore him a son, Hasti, who built this city of Hastinapura. Therefore, it is called after him, Hastinapura. (01-90-036)
हस्ती खलु त्रैगर्तीमुपयेमे यशोधरां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे विकुण्ठनः॥०१-९०-०३७॥
Indeed, Hastī married Yaśodharā of Trigarta by name; in her, his son Vikuṇṭhana was born. (01-90-037)
विकुण्ठनः खलु दाशार्हीमुपयेमे सुदेवां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञेऽजमीढः॥०१-९०-०३८॥
Vikuṇṭhana indeed married Sudeva, the Dasharha lady. From her, Ajamīḍha was born to him. (01-90-038)
अजमीढस्य चतुर्विंशं पुत्रशतं बभूव कैकेय्यां नागायां गान्धार्यां विमलायामृक्षायां चेति।पृथक्पृथग्वंशकरा नृपतयः।तत्र वंशकरः संवरणः॥०१-९०-०३९॥
Ajamīḍha had twenty-four sons, a hundred in total, born from Kaikeyī, Nāgā, Gāndhārī, Vimalā and Ṛkṣā; each was the progenitor of a separate royal lineage. Among them, Saṃvaraṇa was the main progenitor of the dynasty. (01-90-039)
संवरणः खलु वैवस्वतीं तपतीं नामोपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे कुरुः॥०१-९०-०४०॥
Saṁvaraṇa indeed married Vaivasvatī, named Tapatī. From her, his son Kuru was born. (01-90-040)
कुरुः खलु दाशार्हीमुपयेमे शुभाङ्गीं नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे विडूरथः॥०१-९०-०४१॥
The Kuru king indeed married Śubhāṅgī, a woman of the Daśārha clan. By her, his son Viḍūratha was born. (01-90-041)
विडूरथस्तु मागधीमुपयेमे सम्प्रियां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञेऽरुग्वान्नाम॥०१-९०-०४२॥
But Viḍūratha married a Māgadhī woman named Sampriyā. In her, his son named Arugvān was born. (01-90-042)
अरुग्वान्खलु मागधीमुपयेमेऽमृतां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे परिक्षित्॥०१-९०-०४३॥
Arugvān indeed married Māgadhī, whose name was Amṛtā. In her, his son Parikṣit was born. (01-90-043)
परिक्षित्खलु बाहुदामुपयेमे सुयशां नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे भीमसेनः॥०१-९०-०४४॥
Indeed, Parikṣit married Bāhudā named Suyaśā; in her, his son Bhīmasena was born. (01-90-044)
भीमसेनः खलु कैकेयीमुपयेमे सुकुमारीं नाम।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे पर्यश्रवाः।
Bhimasena indeed married Kaikeyi, named Sukumari. By her, his son Paryashravas was born.
यमाहुः प्रतीपं नाम॥०१-९०-०४५॥
They called him by the name Pratīpa. (01-90-045)
प्रतीपः खलु शैब्यामुपयेमे सुनन्दां नाम।तस्यां पुत्रानुत्पादयामास देवापिं शन्तनुं बाह्लीकं चेति॥०१-९०-०४६॥
Pratipa indeed married Shaibya, who was named Sunanda. From her, he begot sons: Devāpi, Śantanu, and Bāhlīka. (01-90-046)
देवापिः खलु बाल एवारण्यं प्रविवेश।शन्तनुस्तु महीपालोऽभवत्।अत्रानुवंशो भवति॥०१-९०-०४७॥
Devāpi, indeed, entered the forest while still a child. Śantanu, however, became king. Here follows the genealogy. (01-90-047)
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं स सुखमश्नुते।पुनर्युवा च भवति तस्मात्तं शन्तनुं विदुः ॥०१-९०-४८॥
Whoever Śantanu touched with his hands, that person regained happiness and became young again; therefore, people know him as Śantanu. (01-90-48)
तदस्य शन्तनुत्वम्॥०१-९०-०४९॥
That is his Śantanu-hood. (01-90-049)
शन्तनुः खलु गङ्गां भागीरथीमुपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे देवव्रतः।यमाहुर्भीष्म इति॥०१-९०-०५०॥
Śantanu indeed took Ganga, the Bhagirathi, as his wife. In her, his son Devavrata was born, whom they call Bhishma. (01-90-050)
भीष्मः खलु पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया सत्यवतीमुदवहन्मातरम्।यामाहुर्गन्धकालीति॥०१-९०-०५१॥
Indeed, Bhīṣma, wishing to please his father, accepted Satyavatī as his mother, whom they call Gandhakālī. (01-90-051)
तस्यां कानीनो गर्भः पराशराद्द्वैपायनः।तस्यामेव शन्तनोर्द्वौ पुत्रौ बभूवतुः।चित्राङ्गदो विचित्रवीर्यश्च॥०१-९०-०५२॥
In her, the kānīna son, Vyāsa, was born from Parāśara. And in her also, Śantanu had two sons, Citrāṅgada and Vicitravīrya. (01-90-052)
तयोरप्राप्तयौवन एव चित्राङ्गदो गन्धर्वेण हतः।विचित्रवीर्यस्तु राजा समभवत्॥०१-९०-०५३॥
When both came of age, Citrāṅgada was killed by a Gandharva. But Vicitravīrya became king. (01-90-053)
विचित्रवीर्यः खलु कौसल्यात्मजेऽम्बिकाम्बालिके काशिराजदुहितरावुपयेमे॥०१-९०-०५४॥
Vicitravīrya indeed married Ambikā and Ambālikā, the two daughters of the king of Kāśi, O son of Kausalyā. (01-90-054)
विचित्रवीर्यस्त्वनपत्य एव विदेहत्वं प्राप्तः॥०१-९०-०५५॥
Vichitravirya, however, died without leaving any offspring. (01-90-055)
ततः सत्यवती चिन्तयामास।दौःषन्तो वंश उच्छिद्यते इति॥०१-९०-०५६॥
Then Satyavati thought, "The lineage of the descendant of Duḥṣanta is being destroyed." (01-90-056)
सा द्वैपायनमृषिं चिन्तयामास॥०१-९०-०५७॥
She thought of the sage Dvaipayana. (01-90-057)
स तस्याः पुरतः स्थितः किं करवाणीति॥०१-९०-०५८॥
Standing in front of her, he thought: "What shall I do?" (01-90-058)
सा तमुवाच।भ्राता तवानपत्य एव स्वर्यातो विचित्रवीर्यः।साध्वपत्यं तस्योत्पादयेति॥०१-९०-०५९॥
She said to him, "Your brother Vicitravīrya, who was without offspring, has gone to heaven. Therefore, do produce offspring for him." (01-90-059)
स परमित्युक्त्वा त्रीन्पुत्रानुत्पादयामास धृतराष्ट्रं पाण्डुं विदुरं चेति॥०१-९०-०६०॥
Having thus spoken 'param', he produced three sons—Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura. (01-90-060)
तत्र धृतराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञः पुत्रशतं बभूव गान्धार्यां वरदानाद्द्वैपायनस्य॥०१-९०-०६१॥
There, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra had a hundred sons born from Gāndhārī by the boon of Dvaipāyana. (01-90-061)
तेषां धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणां चत्वारः प्रधाना बभूवुर्दुर्योधनो दुःशासनो विकर्णश्चित्रसेन इति॥०१-९०-०६२॥
Among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, four were the principal ones: Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, and Citrasena. (01-90-062)
पाण्डोस्तु द्वे भार्ये बभूवतुः कुन्ती माद्री चेत्युभे स्त्रीरत्ने॥०१-९०-०६३॥
But Pāṇḍu had two wives, Kuntī and Mādrī, both were jewels among women. (01-90-063)
अथ पाण्डुर्मृगयां चरन्मैथुनगतमृषिमपश्यन्मृग्यां वर्तमानम्। तथैवाप्लुतमनासादितकामरसमतृप्तं बाणेनाभिजघान॥०१-९०-०६४॥
Then, as Pāṇḍu was hunting, he saw a sage in the form of a deer engaged in mating. While the sage was still unsatisfied, Pāṇḍu shot him with an arrow. (01-90-064)
स बाणविद्ध उवाच पाण्डुम्।चरता धर्ममिमं येन त्वयाभिज्ञेन कामरसस्याहमनवाप्तकामरसोऽभिहतस्तस्मात्त्वमप्येतामवस्थामासाद्यानवाप्तकामरसः पञ्चत्वमाप्स्यसि क्षिप्रमेवेति॥०१-९०-०६५॥
He, having been pierced by an arrow, said to Pāṇḍu: 'By practising this Dharma, of which you are aware, I, not having attained the pleasure of desire, have been struck. Therefore, you too, on reaching this state without experiencing the pleasure of desire, will soon meet your death.' (01-90-065)
स विवर्णरूपः पाण्डुः शापं परिहरमाणो नोपासर्पत भार्ये॥०१-९०-०६६॥
Pāṇḍu, appearing pale, did not go near his wife, avoiding the curse. (01-90-066)
वाक्यं चोवाच।स्वचापल्यादिदं प्राप्तवानहम्।शृणोमि च नानपत्यस्य लोका सन्तीति॥०१-९०-०६७॥
He spoke these words: "Because of my own rashness, I have come to this. I also hear that there are no worlds for one who has no offspring." (01-90-067)
सा त्वं मदर्थे पुत्रानुत्पादयेति कुन्तीमुवाच॥०१-९०-०६८॥
She said to Kunti, "You should produce sons for my sake." (01-90-068)
सा तत्र पुत्रानुत्पादयामास धर्माद्युधिष्ठिरं मारुताद्भीमसेनं शक्रादर्जुनमिति॥०१-९०-०६९॥
There, she produced sons—Yudhishthira from Dharma, Bhimasena from Maruta, and Arjuna from Shakra (Indra)—thus. (01-90-069)
स तां हृष्टरूपः पाण्डुरुवाच।इयं ते सपत्न्यनपत्या।साध्वस्यामपत्यमुत्पाद्यतामिति॥०१-९०-०७०॥
He, delighted, Pāṇḍu said to her: "This is your co-wife, and she is without children. Therefore, let a child be produced in her." (01-90-070)
स एवमस्त्वित्युक्तः कुन्त्या॥०१-९०-०७१॥
He, having been told 'Let it be so' by Kuntī, (01-90-071)
ततो माद्र्यामश्विभ्यां नकुलसहदेवावुत्पादितौ॥०१-९०-०७२॥
Then, in Mādrī, Nakula and Sahadeva were begotten by the two Aśvins. (01-90-072)
माद्रीं खल्वलङ्कृतां दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुर्भावं चक्रे॥०१-९०-०७३॥स तां स्पृष्ट्वैव विदेहत्वं प्राप्तः॥०१-९०-०७४॥
Pāṇḍu, on seeing the adorned Madrī, was overcome by feeling; having touched her, he immediately passed away. (01-90-073) (01-90-074)
तत्रैनं चितास्थं माद्री समन्वारुरोह॥०१-९०-०७५॥
There, Madrī ascended the funeral pyre along with him. (01-90-075)
उवाच कुन्तीम्।यमयोरार्ययाप्रमत्तया भवितव्यमिति॥०१-९०-०७६॥
He said to Kuntī: "By the noble lady, for the twins, being inattentive, so it must happen." (01-90-076)
ततस्ते पञ्च पाण्डवाः कुन्त्या सहिता हास्तिनपुरमानीय तापसैर्भीष्मस्य विदुरस्य च निवेदिताः॥०१-९०-०७७॥
Then the five Pāṇḍavas, together with Kuntī, were brought to Hastinapura by ascetics and were introduced to Bhīṣma and Vidura. (01-90-077)
तत्रापि जतुगृहे दग्धुं समारब्धा न शकिता विदुरमन्त्रितेन॥०१-९०-०७८॥
There too, though the burning began in the house of lac, they could not succeed, due to the counsel of Vidura. (01-90-078)
ततश्च हिडिम्बमन्तरा हत्वा एकचक्रां गताः॥०१-९०-०७९॥
Thereafter, having slain Hiḍimba in the meantime, they went to Ekacakrā. (01-90-079)
तस्यामप्येकचक्रायां बकं नाम राक्षसं हत्वा पाञ्चालनगरमभिगताः॥०१-९०-०८०॥
In that city as well, in Ekacakrā, having slain the demon named Baka, they proceeded to the city of the Pāñcālas. (01-90-080)
तस्माद्द्रौपदीं भार्यामविन्दन्स्वविषयं चाजग्मुः कुशलिनः॥०१-९०-०८१॥
Therefore, they obtained Draupadī as their wife and returned safely to their own territory. (01-90-081)
पुत्रांश्चोत्पादयामासुः।प्रतिविन्ध्यं युधिष्ठिरः।सुतसोमं वृकोदरः।श्रुतकीर्तिमर्जुनः।शतानीकं नकुलः।श्रुतकर्माणं सहदेव इति॥०१-९०-०८२॥
The sons that they begot were as follows: Prativindhya by Yudhishthira, Sutasoma by Vrikodara (Bhima), Shrutakirti by Arjuna, Shatanika by Nakula, and Shrutakarman by Sahadeva. (01-90-082)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु गोवासनस्य शैब्यस्य देविकां नाम कन्यां स्वयंवरे लेभे।तस्यां पुत्रं जनयामास यौधेयं नाम॥०१-९०-०८३॥
But Yudhishthira obtained Devika, the daughter of Govasana of Shaibya, at her svayamvara. By her, he begot a son named Yaudheya. (01-90-083)
भीमसेनोऽपि काश्यां बलधरां नामोपयेमे वीर्यशुल्काम्।तस्यां पुत्रं सर्वगं नामोत्पादयामास॥०१-९०-०८४॥
Bhīmasena also married Baladharā, the Kāśya princess, whose bride-price was valor. By her he had a son named Sarvaga. (01-90-084)
अर्जुनः खलु द्वारवतीं गत्वा भगिनीं वासुदेवस्य सुभद्रां नाम भार्यामुदवहत्।तस्यां पुत्रमभिमन्युं नाम जनयामास॥०१-९०-०८५॥
Arjuna indeed went to Dvaravati and married Subhadra, the sister of Vasudeva, as his wife. In her, he begot a son named Abhimanyu. (01-90-085)
नकुलस्तु चैद्यां करेणुवतीं नाम भार्यामुदवहत्।तस्यां पुत्रं निरमित्रं नामाजनयत्॥०१-९०-०८६॥
But Nakula married a wife named Kareṇuvatī, the princess of the Chedi. From her, he begot a son named Niramitra. (01-90-086)
सहदेवोऽपि माद्रीमेव स्वयंवरे विजयां नामोपयेमे।तस्यां पुत्रमजनयत्सुहोत्रं नाम॥०१-९०-०८७॥
Sahadeva also, at the svayaṃvara, married a woman named Vijayā, just like Mādrī. By her, he begot a son named Suhotra. (01-90-087)
भीमसेनस्तु पूर्वमेव हिडिम्बायां राक्षस्यां घटोत्कचं नाम पुत्रं जनयामास॥०१-९०-०८८॥
But Bhimasena previously indeed begot a son named Ghatotkacha by Hidimba, the rakshasi. (01-90-088)
इत्येते एकादश पाण्डवानां पुत्राः॥०१-९०-०८९॥
Thus, these are the eleven sons of the Pāṇḍavas. (01-90-089)
विराटस्य दुहितरमुत्तरां नामाभिमन्युरुपयेमे।तस्यामस्य परासुर्गर्भोऽजायत॥०१-९०-०९०॥
Abhimanyu married Uttarā, the daughter of Virāṭa. In her, his noble son was conceived. (01-90-090)
तमुत्सङ्गेन प्रतिजग्राह पृथा नियोगात्पुरुषोत्तमस्य वासुदेवस्य।षाण्मासिकं गर्भमहमेनं जीवयिष्यामीति॥०१-९०-०९१॥
Pṛthā (Kuntī), at the instruction of the supreme man Vāsudeva, received him in her lap. "I will make this six-month-old embryo live," (she said). (01-90-091)
सञ्जीवयित्वा चैनमुवाच।परिक्षीणे कुले जातो भवत्वयं परिक्षिन्नामेति॥०१-९०-०९२॥
Having revived him, (he) said: "Since he is born in a diminished lineage, let this one be known as Parikshin." (01-90-092)
परिक्षित्तु खलु माद्रवतीं नामोपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जनमेजयः॥०१-९०-०९३॥
Parikṣit indeed married a woman named Mādravatī. From her, his son was Janamejaya. (01-90-093)
जनमेजयात्तु वपुष्टमायां द्वौ पुत्रौ शतानीकः शङ्कुश्च॥०१-९०-०९४॥
But from Janamejaya, in Vapuṣṭamā, there were two sons: Śatānīka and Śaṅku. (01-90-094)
शतानीकस्तु खलु वैदेहीमुपयेमे।तस्यामस्य जज्ञे पुत्रोऽश्वमेधदत्तः॥०१-९०-०९५॥
But Śatānīka verily married Vaidehī; to her was born his son, Aśvamedhadatta. (01-90-095)
इत्येष पूरोर्वंशस्तु पाण्डवानां च कीर्तितः।पूरोर्वंशमिमं श्रुत्वा सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०१-९०-९६॥
Thus this lineage of Puru and also of the Pāṇḍavas has been described. Whoever hears this lineage of Puru becomes free from all sins. (01-90-96)
