janamejaya uvāca॥
Janamejaya said.
śrutastvattō mayā vipra pūrveṣāṁ sambhavō mahān।udārāścāpi vaṁśē'sminrājānō mē pariśrutāḥ ॥01-90-1॥
O brāhmaṇa, I have heard from you of the great origin of the former ones; and also, the noble kings in this lineage are well-known to me. (01-90-1)
kiṁ tu laghvarthasaṁyuktaṁ priyākhyānaṁ na māmati।prīṇātyato bhavānbhūyo vistareṇa bravītu me॥01-90-2॥
But the brief account of the dear story does not satisfy me. Therefore, please tell me again in detail. (01-90-2)
etām eva kathām divyām ā prajāpatito manoḥ। teṣām ājananaṃ puṇyaṃ kasya na prītim āvahet॥01-90-3॥
Who would not feel delight in hearing this very divine story, from Prajāpati to Manu, describing their holy origin? (1-90-3)
saddharmaguṇamāhātmyair abhivardhitam uttamam। viṣṭabhya lokāṃs trīn eṣāṃ yaśaḥ sphītam avasthitam ॥01-90-4॥
By the greatness of the qualities of true dharma, the highest (thing) is manifested; their fame, supporting the three worlds, is firmly and greatly established. (01-90-4)
guṇaprabhāvavīryaujasa-tvotsaāvatāmaham।na tṛpyāmi kathāṃ śṛṇvann amṛtāsvādasammitām ॥01-90-5॥
I am never satiated by hearing the story of those endowed with qualities, influence, energy, strength, clarity, and enthusiasm, for it is like tasting nectar. (01-90-5)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
śṛṇu rājan purā samyaṅ mayā dvaipāyanāt śrutam। procyamānam idaṃ kṛtsnam svavaṃśajananam śubham ॥01-90-6॥
O king, listen to this auspicious narration of the entire origin of your own lineage, which I once heard directly from Dvaipayana (Vyasa), as it is being told. (01-90-6)
dakṣasyāditiḥ। aditer vivasvān। vivasvato manuḥ। manor ilā। ilāyāḥ purūravāḥ। purūravas āyuḥ। āyuṣo nahuṣaḥ। nahuṣasya yayātiḥ॥01-90-007॥
From Dakṣa was born Aditi; from Aditi, Vivasvan; from Vivasvan, Manu; from Manu, Ilā; from Ilā, Purūravas; from Purūravas, Āyu; from Āyu, Nahuṣa; from Nahuṣa, Yayāti. (01-90-007)
yayāter dve bhārye babhūvatuḥ। uśanaso duhitā devayānī vṛṣaparvaṇaś ca duhitā śarmiṣṭhā nāma। atrānuvaṃśo bhavati॥01-90-008॥
Yayāti had two wives. Ushanas' daughter was Devayani, and Vrishaparvan's daughter was named Sharmishtha. Here follows the genealogy. (01-90-008)
yaduṁ ca turvasuṁ caiva devayānī vyajāyata। druhyuṁ cānuṁ ca pūruṁ ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī ॥01-90-9॥
Devayani gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu; Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu, Anu, and Puru. (01-90-9)
tatra yador yādavāḥ। pūroḥ pauravāḥ॥01-90-010॥
There were the Yādavas, the descendants of Yadu, and the Pauravas, the descendants of Puru. (01-90-010)
pūrorbhāryā kausalyā nāma।tasyāmasya jajñe janamejayo nāma।yastrīnaśvamedhānājahāra।viśvajitā ceṣṭvā vanaṃ praviveśa॥01-90-011॥
Pūru's wife was named Kausalya. In her, his son named Janamejaya was born. He performed three Aśvamedha sacrifices. Having also performed the Viśvajit sacrifice, he entered the forest. (01-90-011)
janamejayaḥ khalvanantāṃ nāmopayeme mādhavīm।tasyāmasya jajñe prācinvān।yaḥ prācīṃ diśaṃ jigāya yāvatsūryodayāt।tatas tasya prācinvatvam॥01-90-012॥
Janamejaya indeed married Mādhavī named Anantā. From her, his son Prācinvān was born. He conquered the eastern direction as far as the sunrise. Therefore, he was called Prācinvān. (01-90-012)
prācinvān khalv aśmakīm upayeme। tasyām asya jajñe saṃyātiḥ॥01-90-013॥
The elder, indeed, married Aśmakī; by her, his son Saṃyāti was born. (01-90-013)
saṃyātiḥ khalu dṛṣad-vataḥ duhitaraṃ varāṅgīṃ nāma-upayeme। tasyām asya jajñe aham-pātiḥ॥01-90-014॥
Saṃyāti, indeed, took to wife Dṛṣadvata's beautiful-limbed daughter named Varāṅgī. In her, his son was born—myself, the lord. (01-90-014)
ahaṃ pātis tu khalu kṛtavīrya-duhitaram upayeme bhānumatīṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe sārvabhaumaḥ॥01-90-015॥
But I, the king, indeed married Bhānumatī, the daughter of Kritavīrya by name. In her, Sārvabhauma was born of him. (01-90-015)
sārvabhaumaḥ khalu jitvā ājahāra kaikeyīṃ sunandāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe jayatsenaḥ॥01-90-016॥
The universal sovereign indeed, having conquered, took Kaikeyi, whose name was Sunanda, as his wife. In her, his son Jayatsena was born. (01-90-016)
jayatsenaḥ khalu vaidarbhīm upayeme suṣuvāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe arācīnaḥ॥01-90-017॥
Jayatsena indeed married Vaiderbhī, named Suṣuvā. In her, his son Arācīna was born. (01-90-017)
arācīno'pi vaidarbhīmevāparamupayeme maryādāṁ nāma| tasyāmasya jajñe mahābhaumaḥ॥01-90-018॥
Although originating from the east, he married another lady from Vidarbha, named Maryada. From her, his son Mahabhauma was born. (01-90-018)
mahābhaumaḥ khalu prāsenajitīm upayeme suyajñāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe ayutanāyī। yaḥ puruṣamedhānām ayutam ānayat। tad asyāyutanāyitvam॥01-90-019॥
The great king indeed married Suyajñā, daughter of Prasena-jit, by name. In her, his son Ayutanāyī was born, who brought ten thousand human sacrifices. That was his title as Ayutanāyī. (01-90-019)
ayutanāyī khalu pṛthuśravasaḥ duhitaraṁ upayeme bhāsāṁ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe akrodhanaḥ॥01-90-020॥
Ayutanāyī indeed married the daughter of Pṛthuśravas, whose name was Bhāsā. By her, a son was born to him, named Akrōdhana. (01-90-020)
akrodhanaḥ khalu kāliṅgīṃ karaṇḍuṃ nāmopayeme। tasyām asya jajñe devātithiḥ॥01-90-021॥
Akrodhana indeed married a Kaliṅga woman named Karaṇḍu. From her, his son Devātithi was born. (01-90-021)
devātithiḥ khalu vaidehīmupayeme maryādāṃ nāma।tasyāmasya jajñe ṛcaḥ॥01-90-022॥
Indeed, the divine guest married Vaidehī, whose name was Maryādā. In her, his son Ṛc was born. (01-90-022)
ṛcaḥ khalvāṅgeyīm upayeme sudevāṃ nāma। tasyāṃ putram ajanayad ṛkṣam॥01-90-023॥
Ricaḥ, indeed, married Āṅgeyī named Sudēvā. In her, he begot a son, Ṛkṣa. (01-90-023)
ṛkṣaḥ khalu takṣaka-duhitaram upayeme jvālāṃ nāma। tasyāṃ putraṃ matināraṃ nāma utpādayāmāsa॥01-90-024॥
Ṛkṣa indeed married Jvālā, the daughter of Takṣaka. In her, he begot a son named Matināra. (01-90-024)
matināraḥ khalu sarasvatyāṃ dvādaśavārṣikaṃ satram ājahāra॥01-90-025॥
Matinara indeed performed a twelve-year sacrificial session on the Sarasvatī river. (01-90-025)
nivṛtte ca satre sarasvaty abhi-gamya taṁ bhartāram varayām āsa। tasyām putram ajanayat taṁ sum nāma॥01-90-026॥
After the sacrifice had ended, Sarasvatī approached and chose him as her husband. From her, a son named Sum was born. (01-90-026)
atrānuvaṁśo bhavati॥01-90-027॥
Here is the genealogy. (01-90-027)
taṁsuṁ sarasvatī putraṁ matinārāda jījanat। ilinaṁ janayāmāsa kālindyāṁ taṁsurātmajam ॥01-90-28॥
Matinārada begot Taṁsu, the son of Sarasvatī. Ilina, the son of Taṁsu, was born of Kālinidī. (01-90-28)
ilinas tu rathantaryāṃ duḥṣantādyān pañca putrān ajanayat ॥01-90-029॥
But Ilina begot five sons, including Duḥṣanta, in Rathantari. (01-90-029)
duḥṣantaḥ khalu viśvāmitra-duhitaram śakuntalām nāmopayeme। tasyām asya jajñe bharataḥ। tatra ślokau bhavataḥ॥01-90-030॥
King Duḥṣanta indeed married Śakuntalā, the daughter of Viśvāmitra. In her, his son Bharata was born. There are two verses (on this). (01-90-030)
mātā bhastrā pituḥ putro yena jātaḥ sa eva saḥ। bharasva putraṃ duṣyanta māvamaṃsthāḥ śakuntalām ॥01-90-31॥
The mother is just the womb; the father is the source—the son is born from whom, he is truly his. Accept your son, Duṣyanta, do not look down upon Śakuntalā. (01-90-31)
retodhāḥ putra unnayati naradeva yamakṣayāt। tvaṃ ca asya dhātā garbhasya satyam āha śakuntalā ॥01-90-32॥
The father brings the son back from the realm of Yama, O king, and you are indeed the sustainer of his life in the womb. Śakuntalā has spoken the truth. (01-90-32)
tato'sya bharatatvam॥01-90-033॥
Then he attained the sovereignty of Bharata. (01-90-033)
bharataḥ khalu kāśeyīm upayeme sārvasenīṃ sunandāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe bhūmanyuḥ॥01-90-034॥
Bharata indeed married Kāśeyī, the daughter of Sarvasena, named Sunandā. To her, his son Bhūmanyu was born. (01-90-034)
bhumanyuḥ khalu dāśārhīm upayeme jayāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe suhōtraḥ॥01-90-035॥
Bhumanyu indeed married a Dasharha lady named Jayā. In her, his son Suhotra was born. (01-90-035)
suhotraḥ khalv ikṣvāku-kanyām upayeme suvarṇāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe hastī। ya idaṃ hāstinapuraṃ māpayāmāsa। etad asya hāstinapur tvam॥01-90-036॥
Suhotra indeed married the Ikshvaku princess named Suvarna. She bore him a son, Hasti, who built this city of Hastinapura. Therefore, it is called after him, Hastinapura. (01-90-036)
hastī khalu traigartīm upayeme yaśodharāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe vikuṇṭhanaḥ॥01-90-037॥
Indeed, Hastī married Yaśodharā of Trigarta by name; in her, his son Vikuṇṭhana was born. (01-90-037)
vikuṇṭhanaḥ khalu dāśārhīm upayeme sudevāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe'jamīḍhaḥ॥01-90-038॥
Vikuṇṭhana indeed married Sudeva, the Dasharha lady. From her, Ajamīḍha was born to him. (01-90-038)
ajamīḍhasya caturviṃśaṃ putraśataṃ babhūva kaikeyyāṃ nāgāyāṃ gāndhāryāṃ vimalāyām ṛkṣāyāṃ ceti. pṛthakpṛthag vaṃśakarā nṛpatayaḥ. tatra vaṃśakaraḥ saṃvaraṇaḥ॥01-90-039॥
Ajamīḍha had twenty-four sons, a hundred in total, born from Kaikeyī, Nāgā, Gāndhārī, Vimalā and Ṛkṣā; each was the progenitor of a separate royal lineage. Among them, Saṃvaraṇa was the main progenitor of the dynasty. (01-90-039)
saṁvaraṇaḥ khalu vaivasvatīṁ tapatīṁ nāmopayeme। tasyām asya jajñe kuruḥ॥01-90-040॥
Saṁvaraṇa indeed married Vaivasvatī, named Tapatī. From her, his son Kuru was born. (01-90-040)
kuruḥ khalu dāśārhīm upayeme śubhāṅgīm nāma। tasyām asya jajñe viḍūrathaḥ॥01-90-041॥
The Kuru king indeed married Śubhāṅgī, a woman of the Daśārha clan. By her, his son Viḍūratha was born. (01-90-041)
viḍūrathas tu māgadhīm upayeme sampriyāṁ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe'rugvān nāma॥01-90-042॥
But Viḍūratha married a Māgadhī woman named Sampriyā. In her, his son named Arugvān was born. (01-90-042)
arugvān khalu māgadhīm upayeme 'mṛtāṃ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe parikṣit॥01-90-043॥
Arugvān indeed married Māgadhī, whose name was Amṛtā. In her, his son Parikṣit was born. (01-90-043)
parikṣitkhalu bāhudāmupayeme suyaśāṃ nāma। tasyāmasya jajñe bhīmasenaḥ॥01-90-044॥
Indeed, Parikṣit married Bāhudā named Suyaśā; in her, his son Bhīmasena was born. (01-90-044)
bhīmasenaḥ khalu kaikeyīm-upayeme sukumārīṁ nāma। tasyām asya jajñe paryaśravāḥ।
Bhimasena indeed married Kaikeyi, named Sukumari. By her, his son Paryashravas was born.
yamāhuḥ pratīpaṃ nāma॥01-90-045॥
They called him by the name Pratīpa. (01-90-045)
pratīpaḥ khalu śaibyām upayeme sunandāṃ nāma। tasyāṃ putrān utpādayāmāsa devāpiṃ śantanuṃ bāhlīkaṃ ceti॥01-90-046॥
Pratipa indeed married Shaibya, who was named Sunanda. From her, he begot sons: Devāpi, Śantanu, and Bāhlīka. (01-90-046)
devāpiḥ khalu bāla evāraṇyaṃ praviveśa। śantanus tu mahīpālo 'bhavat। atrānuvaṃśo bhavati॥01-90-047॥
Devāpi, indeed, entered the forest while still a child. Śantanu, however, became king. Here follows the genealogy. (01-90-047)
yaṁ yaṁ karābhyāṁ spṛśati jīrṇaṁ sa sukham aśnute। punar yuvā ca bhavati tasmāt taṁ śaṁtanuṁ viduḥ॥01-90-48॥
Whoever Śantanu touched with his hands, that person regained happiness and became young again; therefore, people know him as Śantanu. (01-90-48)
tadasya śantanutvam॥01-90-049॥
That is his Śantanu-hood. (01-90-049)
śantanuḥ khalu gaṅgāṁ bhāgīrathīm-upayeme। tasyām-asya jajñe devavrataḥ। yam āhuḥ bhīṣma iti॥01-90-050॥
Śantanu indeed took Ganga, the Bhagirathi, as his wife. In her, his son Devavrata was born, whom they call Bhishma. (01-90-050)
bhīṣmaḥ khalu pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā satyavatīmudavahan mātaram। yām āhur gandhakālī iti॥01-90-051॥
Indeed, Bhīṣma, wishing to please his father, accepted Satyavatī as his mother, whom they call Gandhakālī. (01-90-051)
tasyāṃ kānīno garbhaḥ parāśarād-dvaipāyanaḥ। tasyām eva śantanor dvau putrau babhūvatuḥ। citrāṅgado vicitravīryaś ca॥01-90-052॥
In her, the kānīna son, Vyāsa, was born from Parāśara. And in her also, Śantanu had two sons, Citrāṅgada and Vicitravīrya. (01-90-052)
tayoraprāptayauvana eva citrāṅgado gandharveṇa hataḥ।vicitravīryas tu rājā samabhavat ॥01-90-053॥
When both came of age, Citrāṅgada was killed by a Gandharva. But Vicitravīrya became king. (01-90-053)
vicitravīryaḥ khalu kausalyātmaje'mbikāmbālike kāśirājaduhitarāvupayeme॥01-90-054॥
Vicitravīrya indeed married Ambikā and Ambālikā, the two daughters of the king of Kāśi, O son of Kausalyā. (01-90-054)
vicitravīryas tvanapatya eva videhatvaṃ prāptaḥ॥01-90-055॥
Vichitravirya, however, died without leaving any offspring. (01-90-055)
tataḥ satyavatī cintayāmāsa।dauḥṣanto vaṁśa uccidhyate iti॥01-90-056॥
Then Satyavati thought, "The lineage of the descendant of Duḥṣanta is being destroyed." (01-90-056)
sā dvaipāyanam ṛṣiṃ cintayām āsa॥01-90-057॥
She thought of the sage Dvaipayana. (01-90-057)
sa tasyāḥ purataḥ sthitaḥ kiṃ karavāṇīti॥01-90-058॥
Standing in front of her, he thought: "What shall I do?" (01-90-058)
sā tam uvāca। bhrātā tav anapatya eva svaryāto vicitravīryaḥ। sādhv apatyaṃ tasya utpādayeti॥01-90-059॥
She said to him, "Your brother Vicitravīrya, who was without offspring, has gone to heaven. Therefore, do produce offspring for him." (01-90-059)
saḥ param ity uktvā trīn putrān utpādayāmāsa dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ pāṇḍuṃ viduraṃ ceti॥01-90-060॥
Having thus spoken 'param', he produced three sons—Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura. (01-90-060)
tatra dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ putraśataṃ babhūva gāndhāryāṃ varadānāddvaipāyanasya॥01-90-061॥
There, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra had a hundred sons born from Gāndhārī by the boon of Dvaipāyana. (01-90-061)
teṣāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇāṃ catvāraḥ pradhānā babhūvur duryodhanaḥ duḥśāsanaḥ vikarṇaḥ citrasena iti॥01-90-062॥
Among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, four were the principal ones: Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, and Citrasena. (01-90-062)
pāṇḍostu dve bhārye babhūvatuḥ kuntī mādrī cetyubhe strīratne॥01-90-063॥
But Pāṇḍu had two wives, Kuntī and Mādrī, both were jewels among women. (01-90-063)
atha pāṇḍur mṛgayāṃ caran maithuna-gataṃ ṛṣim apaśyan mṛgyāṃ vartamānam. tathaiva āplutam anāsādita-kāma-rasa-m atṛptaṃ bāṇena abhijaghāna॥01-90-064॥
Then, as Pāṇḍu was hunting, he saw a sage in the form of a deer engaged in mating. While the sage was still unsatisfied, Pāṇḍu shot him with an arrow. (01-90-064)
sa bāṇaviddha uvāca pāṇḍum। caratā dharmam imaṃ yena tvayā abhijñena kāmarasasya aham anavāpta-kāmarasaḥ abhibhataḥ tasmāt tvam api etām avasthām āsādya anavāpta-kāmarasaḥ pañcatvam āpsyasi kṣipram eva iti॥01-90-065॥
He, having been pierced by an arrow, said to Pāṇḍu: 'By practising this Dharma, of which you are aware, I, not having attained the pleasure of desire, have been struck. Therefore, you too, on reaching this state without experiencing the pleasure of desire, will soon meet your death.' (01-90-065)
sa vivarṇarūpaḥ pāṇḍuḥ śāpaṃ pariharamāṇo nopāsarpat bhārye॥01-90-066॥
Pāṇḍu, appearing pale, did not go near his wife, avoiding the curse. (01-90-066)
vākyaṁ covāca। svacāpalyād idaṁ prāptavān aham। śṛṇomi ca nānapatyasya lokāḥ santīti॥01-90-067॥
He spoke these words: "Because of my own rashness, I have come to this. I also hear that there are no worlds for one who has no offspring." (01-90-067)
sā tvaṃ madarthe putrān-utpādayeti kuntīm-uvāca॥01-90-068॥
She said to Kunti, "You should produce sons for my sake." (01-90-068)
sā tatra putrān utpādayāmāsa dharmād yudhiṣṭhiraṃ mārutād bhīmasenaṃ śakrād arjunam iti॥01-90-069॥
There, she produced sons—Yudhishthira from Dharma, Bhimasena from Maruta, and Arjuna from Shakra (Indra)—thus. (01-90-069)
sa tāṃ hṛṣṭarūpaḥ pāṇḍur uvāca। iyaṃ te sapatny-anapatyā। sādhv asyām apatyam utpādyatām iti॥01-90-070॥
He, delighted, Pāṇḍu said to her: "This is your co-wife, and she is without children. Therefore, let a child be produced in her." (01-90-070)
sa evam astv ity uktaḥ kuntiyā॥01-90-071॥
He, having been told 'Let it be so' by Kuntī, (01-90-071)
tato mādryāmaśvibhyāṃ nakula-sahadevāvutpāditau॥01-90-072॥
Then, in Mādrī, Nakula and Sahadeva were begotten by the two Aśvins. (01-90-072)
mādriṃ khalvalañkṛtāṃ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍurbhāvaṃ cakre॥01-90-073॥sa tāṃ spṛṣṭvaiva videhatvaṃ prāptaḥ॥01-90-074॥
Pāṇḍu, on seeing the adorned Madrī, was overcome by feeling; having touched her, he immediately passed away. (01-90-073) (01-90-074)
tatrainaṃ citāsthaṃ mādrī samanvāruroha॥01-90-075॥
There, Madrī ascended the funeral pyre along with him. (01-90-075)
uvāca kuntīm। yamayor āryayā pramattayā bhavitavyam iti॥01-90-076॥
He said to Kuntī: "By the noble lady, for the twins, being inattentive, so it must happen." (01-90-076)
tataste pañca pāṇḍavāḥ kuntyā sahitā hāstinapuram ānīya tāpasair bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca niveditāḥ॥01-90-077॥
Then the five Pāṇḍavas, together with Kuntī, were brought to Hastinapura by ascetics and were introduced to Bhīṣma and Vidura. (01-90-077)
tatrāpi jatugṛhe dagdhuṁ samārabdhā na śakitā viduramantritena॥01-90-078॥
There too, though the burning began in the house of lac, they could not succeed, due to the counsel of Vidura. (01-90-078)
tataś ca hiḍimbam antarā hatvā ekacakrāṃ gatāḥ॥01-90-079॥
Thereafter, having slain Hiḍimba in the meantime, they went to Ekacakrā. (01-90-079)
tasyām api ekacakrāyāṃ bakaṃ nāma rākṣasaṃ hatvā pāñcālanagaram abhigatāḥ॥01-90-080॥
In that city as well, in Ekacakrā, having slain the demon named Baka, they proceeded to the city of the Pāñcālas. (01-90-080)
tasmāddraupadīṃ bhāryāmavindan svaviṣayaṃ cājagmuḥ kuśalinaḥ॥01-90-081॥
Therefore, they obtained Draupadī as their wife and returned safely to their own territory. (01-90-081)
putrāṁścotpādayāmāsuḥ. prativindhyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. sutasomaṁ vṛkodaraḥ. śrutakīrtimarjunaḥ. śatānīkaṁ nakulaḥ. śrutakarmāṇaṁ sahadeva iti॥01-90-082॥
The sons that they begot were as follows: Prativindhya by Yudhishthira, Sutasoma by Vrikodara (Bhima), Shrutakirti by Arjuna, Shatanika by Nakula, and Shrutakarman by Sahadeva. (01-90-082)
yudhiṣṭhiras tu govāsanasya śaibyasya devikāṃ nāma kanyāṃ svayaṃvare lebhe। tasyāṃ putraṃ janayāmāsa yaudheyaṃ nāma॥01-90-083॥
But Yudhishthira obtained Devika, the daughter of Govasana of Shaibya, at her svayamvara. By her, he begot a son named Yaudheya. (01-90-083)
bhīmaseno'pi kāśyāṃ baladharāṃ nāmopayeme vīryaśulkām। tasyāṃ putraṃ sarvagaṃ nāmotpādayāmāsa॥01-90-084॥
Bhīmasena also married Baladharā, the Kāśya princess, whose bride-price was valor. By her he had a son named Sarvaga. (01-90-084)
arjunaḥ khalu dvāravatīṁ gatvā bhaginīṁ vāsudevasya subhadrāṁ nāma bhāryām udavahat। tasyāṁ putram abhimanyuṁ nāma janayām āsa॥01-90-085॥
Arjuna indeed went to Dvaravati and married Subhadra, the sister of Vasudeva, as his wife. In her, he begot a son named Abhimanyu. (01-90-085)
nakulas tu caidyāṃ kareṇuvatīṃ nāma bhāryām udavahat। tasyāṃ putraṃ niramitraṃ nāma ājanayat॥01-90-086॥
But Nakula married a wife named Kareṇuvatī, the princess of the Chedi. From her, he begot a son named Niramitra. (01-90-086)
sahadevo'pi mādrīmeva svayaṃvare vijayāṃ nāmopayeme।tasyāṃ putramajanayatsuhotraṃ nāma॥01-90-087॥
Sahadeva also, at the svayaṃvara, married a woman named Vijayā, just like Mādrī. By her, he begot a son named Suhotra. (01-90-087)
bhīmasenastu pūrvameva hiḍimbāyāṁ rākṣasyāṁ ghaṭotkacaṁ nāma putraṁ janayāmāsa॥01-90-088॥
But Bhimasena previously indeed begot a son named Ghatotkacha by Hidimba, the rakshasi. (01-90-088)
ityete ekādaśa pāṇḍavānāṃ putrāḥ॥01-90-089॥
Thus, these are the eleven sons of the Pāṇḍavas. (01-90-089)
virāṭasya duhitaraṃ uttarāṃ nāmābhimanyurupayeme। tasyām asya parāsur garbho'jāyata॥01-90-090॥
Abhimanyu married Uttarā, the daughter of Virāṭa. In her, his noble son was conceived. (01-90-090)
tam utsaṅgena pratijagrāha pṛthā niyogāt puruṣottamasya vāsudevasya। ṣāṇmāsikaṃ garbham aham enaṃ jīvayiṣyāmi iti॥01-90-091॥
Pṛthā (Kuntī), at the instruction of the supreme man Vāsudeva, received him in her lap. "I will make this six-month-old embryo live," (she said). (01-90-091)
sañjīvayitvā cainam uvāca। parikṣīṇe kule jāto bhavatv ayaṁ parikṣiṇ-nāma eti॥01-90-092॥
Having revived him, (he) said: "Since he is born in a diminished lineage, let this one be known as Parikshin." (01-90-092)
parikṣittu khalu mādravatīṃ nāmopayeme। tasyām asya janamejayaḥ॥01-90-093॥
Parikṣit indeed married a woman named Mādravatī. From her, his son was Janamejaya. (01-90-093)
janamejayāttu vapuṣṭamāyāṃ dvau putrau śatānīkaḥ śaṅkuś ca॥01-90-094॥
But from Janamejaya, in Vapuṣṭamā, there were two sons: Śatānīka and Śaṅku. (01-90-094)
śatānīkastu khalu vaidehīmupayeme।tasyāmasya jajñe putro'śvamedhadattaḥ॥01-90-095॥
But Śatānīka verily married Vaidehī; to her was born his son, Aśvamedhadatta. (01-90-095)
ityeṣa pūrorvaṁśastu pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kīrtitaḥ। pūrorvaṁśam imaṁ śrutvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate॥01-90-96॥
Thus this lineage of Puru and also of the Pāṇḍavas has been described. Whoever hears this lineage of Puru becomes free from all sins. (01-90-96)
