Vaiśampāyana said:
ततो विवाहे निर्वृत्ते स राजा शन्तनुर्नृपः। तां कन्यां रूपसम्पन्नां स्वगृहे संन्यवेशयत् ॥१-०९५-१॥
tataḥ vivāhe nirvṛtte sa rājā śantanuḥ nṛpaḥ. tāṁ kanyāṁ rūpa-sampannāṁ sva-gṛhe saṁnyaveśayat ॥1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विवाहे (vivāhe) - marriage; निर्वृत्ते (nirvṛtte) - having been completed; सः (saḥ) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - ruler; ताम् (tām) - her; कन्यां (kanyām) - maiden; रूपसम्पन्नाम् (rūpa-sampannām) - endowed with beauty; स्वगृहे (sva-gṛhe) - in his own house; संन्यवेशयत् (saṁnyaveśayat) - installed (settled)]
Then, after the marriage was completed, King Śantanu settled that beautiful maiden in his own house.
ततः शान्तनवो धीमान्सत्यवत्यामजायत। वीरश्चित्राङ्गदो नाम वीर्येण मनुजानति ॥१-०९५-२॥
tataḥ śāntanavaḥ dhīmān satyavatyām ajāyata. vīraḥ citrāṅgadaḥ nāma vīryeṇa manujān ati ॥2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śantanu; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सत्यवत्याम् (satyavatyām) - in Satyavatī; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; वीरः (vīraḥ) - a hero; चित्राङ्गदः (citrāṅgadaḥ) - Citrāṅgada; नाम (nāma) - by name; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by prowess; मनुजान् (manujān) - men; अति (ati) - surpassed]
Then the wise son of Śantanu was born to Satyavatī — a hero named Citrāṅgada, who surpassed men in prowess.
अथापरं महेष्वासं सत्यवत्यां पुनः प्रभुः। विचित्रवीर्यं राजानं जनयामास वीर्यवान् ॥१-०९५-३॥
atha aparam maheṣvāsam satyavatyām punaḥ prabhuḥ. vicitravīryaṁ rājānaṁ janayām āsa vīryavān ॥3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपरम् (aparam) - another; महेष्वासम् (maheṣvāsam) - great archer; सत्यवत्याम् (satyavatyām) - in Satyavatī; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord (Śantanu); विचित्रवीर्यम् (vicitravīryam) - Vicitravīrya; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; जनयामास (janayām āsa) - begot; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful one]
Then the Lord (Śantanu) again begot in Satyavatī a powerful son, the king Vicitravīrya, a great archer.
अप्राप्तवति तस्मिंश्च यौवनं भरतर्षभ। स राजा शन्तनुर्धीमान्कालधर्ममुपेयिवान् ॥१-०९५-४॥
aprāptavati tasmin ca yauvanam bharata-ṛṣabha. sa rājā śantanur dhīmān kāla-dharmam upeyivān ॥4॥
[अप्राप्तवति (aprāptavati) - having not yet attained; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; च (ca) - and; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; भरतर्षभ (bharata-ṛṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; सः (saḥ) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; कालधर्मम् (kāla-dharmam) - the law of time (death); उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - approached]
Before he (Vicitravīrya) had attained youth, that wise king Śantanu, O best of the Bharatas, approached the law of time — he died.
स्वर्गते शन्तनौ भीष्मश्चित्राङ्गदमरिंदमम्। स्थापयामास वै राज्ये सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः ॥१-०९५-५॥
svargate śantanau bhīṣmaḥ citrāṅgadam ariṁdamam. sthāpayām āsa vai rājye satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ ॥5॥
[स्वर्गते (svargate) - having gone to heaven; शन्तनौ (śantanau) - when Śantanu; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; चित्राङ्गदम् (citrāṅgadam) - Citrāṅgada; अरिंदमम् (ariṁdamam) - subduer of foes; स्थापयामास (sthāpayām āsa) - established; वै (vai) - indeed; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; सत्यवत्या (satyavatyā) - by Satyavatī; मते (mate) - with the consent; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - being firm;]
When Śantanu had gone to heaven, firm Bhīṣma, established Citrāṅgada, the subduer of foes, on the throne with the consent of Satyavatī.
स तु चित्राङ्गदः शौर्यात्सर्वांश्चिक्षेप पार्थिवान्। मनुष्यं न हि मेने स कञ्चित्सदृशमात्मनः ॥१-०९५-६॥
sa tu citrāṅgadaḥ śauryāt sarvān cikṣepa pārthivān. manuṣyam na hi mene sa kañcit sadṛśam ātmanaḥ ॥6॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; चित्राङ्गदः (citrāṅgadaḥ) - Citrāṅgada; शौर्यात् (śauryāt) - due to valor; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - defeated; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; मनुष्यम् (manuṣyam) - any man; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मेने (mene) - considered; सः (saḥ) - he; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; सदृशम् (sadṛśam) - equal; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - to himself;]
Indeed, Citrāṅgada, through valor, defeated all the kings and considered no man to be his equal.
तं क्षिपन्तं सुरांश्चैव मनुष्यानसुरांस्तथा। गन्धर्वराजो बलवांस्तुल्यनामाभ्ययात्तदा॥ तेनास्य सुमहद्युद्धं कुरुक्षेत्रे बभूव ह ॥१-०९५-७॥
tam kṣipantam surān ca eva manuṣyān asurān tathā. gandharva-rājo balavān tulya-nāmā abhyayāt tadā॥ tena asya su-mahad yuddham kurukṣetre babhūva ha ॥7॥
[तम् (tam) - him; क्षिपन्तम् (kṣipantam) - attacking; सुरान् (surān) - gods; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - even; मनुष्यान् (manuṣyān) - humans; असुरान् (asurān) - demons; तथा (tathā) - also; गन्धर्वराजः (gandharva-rājaḥ) - the king of Gandharvas; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; तुल्यनाम (tulya-nāma) - having the same name; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - with him; अस्य (asya) - his; सुमहत् (su-mahat) - very great; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukṣetra; बभूव (babhūva) - occurred; ह (ha) - indeed;]
As he attacked gods, humans, and demons alike, then the powerful king of Gandharvas, bearing the same name, approached him. Indeed, A very great battle took place in Kurukṣetra with him.
तयोर्बलवतोस्तत्र गन्धर्वकुरुमुख्ययोः। नद्यास्तीरे हिरण्वत्याः समास्तिस्रोऽभवद्रणः ॥१-०९५-८॥
tayoḥ balavatoḥ tatra gandharva-kuru-mukhyayoḥ. nadyāḥ tīre hiraṇvatyāḥ samāḥ tisraḥ abhavat raṇaḥ ॥8॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; बलवतोः (balavatoḥ) - mighty ones; तत्र (tatra) - there; गन्धर्वकुरुमुख्ययोः (gandharva-kuru-mukhyayoḥ) - Gandharva and Kuru chief; नद्याः (nadyāḥ) - of the river; तीरे (tīre) - on the bank; हिरण्वत्याः (hiraṇvatyāḥ) - of Hiraṇvatī; समाः (samāḥ) - years; तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; रणः (raṇaḥ) - battle;]
There, on the bank of the Hiraṇvatī river, a battle between the mighty Gandharva and Kuru chief continued for three years.
तस्मिन्विमर्दे तुमुले शस्त्रवृष्टिसमाकुले। मायाधिकोऽवधीद्वीरं गन्धर्वः कुरुसत्तमम् ॥१-०९५-९॥
tasmin vimarde tumule śastra-vṛṣṭi-samākule. māyā-adhikaḥ avadhīt vīram gandharvaḥ kuru-sattamam ॥9॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; विमर्दे (vimarde) - clash; तुमुले (tumule) - tumultuous; शस्त्रवृष्टिसमाकुले (śastra-vṛṣṭi-samākule) - filled with showers of weapons; मायाधिकः (māyā-adhikaḥ) - superior in illusion; अवधीद् (avadhīt) - killed; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - the Gandharva; कुरुसत्तमम् (kuru-sattamam) - the best of the Kurus;]
In that tumultuous clash filled with weapon - showers, the Gandharva, superior in illusion, killed the heroic best of the Kurus.
चित्राङ्गदं कुरुश्रेष्ठं विचित्रशरकार्मुकम्। अन्ताय कृत्वा गन्धर्वो दिवमाचक्रमे ततः ॥१-०९५-१०॥
citrāṅgadaṁ kuru-śreṣṭham vicitra-śara-kārmukam. antāya kṛtvā gandharvaḥ divam ācakrame tataḥ ॥10॥
[चित्राङ्गदम् (citrāṅgadam) - Citrāṅgada; कुरुश्रेष्ठम् (kuru-śreṣṭham) - best of the Kurus; विचित्रशरकार्मुकम् (vicitra-śara-kārmukam) - wielder of a wondrous arrowed bow; अन्ताय (antāya) - to his end; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - the Gandharva; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - ascended; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
Having brought to end Citrāṅgada — the best of the Kurus, wielder of a wondrous bow—the Gandharva then ascended to heaven.
तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले निहते भूरिवर्चसि। भीष्मः शान्तनवो राजन्प्रेतकार्याण्यकारयत् ॥१-०९५-११॥
tasmin nṛpati-śārdūle nihate bhūri-varcasi. bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ rājan preta-kāryāṇi akārayat ॥11॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when that; नृपतिशार्दूले (nṛpati-śārdūle) - tiger among kings; निहते (nihate) - was slain; भूरिवर्चसि (bhūri-varcasi) - of great glory; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śantanu; राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रेतकार्याणि (preta-kāryāṇi) - funeral rites; अकारयत् (akārayat) - caused to be performed;]
When that tiger among kings, full of great glory, was slain, Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, O King, caused the funeral rites to be performed.
विचित्रवीर्यं च तदा बालमप्राप्तयौवनम्। कुरुराज्ये महाबाहुरभ्यषिञ्चदनन्तरम् ॥१-०९५-१२॥
vicitravīryaṁ ca tadā bālam aprāpta-yauvanam. kuru-rājye mahā-bāhuḥ abhyaṣiñcat anantaram ॥12॥
[विचित्रवीर्यम् (vicitravīryam) - Vicitravīrya; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; बालम् (bālam) - a boy; अप्राप्तयौवनम् (aprāpta-yauvanam) - not yet of age; कुरुराज्ये (kuru-rājye) - to the throne of the Kurus; महाबाहुः (mahā-bāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one (Bhīṣma); अभ्यषिञ्चत् (abhyaṣiñcat) - anointed; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - thereafter;]
Then Bhīṣma, the mighty-armed, anointed the boy Vicitravīrya, not yet come of age, to the throne of the Kurus.
विचित्रवीर्यस्तु तदा भीष्मस्य वचने स्थितः। अन्वशासन्महाराज पितृपैतामहं पदम् ॥१-०९५-१३॥
vicitravīryaḥ tu tadā bhīṣmasya vacane sthitaḥ. anv-aśāsan mahā-rāja pitṛ-paitāmaham padam ॥13॥
[विचित्रवीर्यः (vicitravīryaḥ) - Vicitravīrya; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; वचने (vacane) - in the counsel; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remaining; अन्वशासत् (anvaśāsat) - ruled; महाराज (mahā-rāja) - O great king; पितृपैतामहम् (pitṛ-paitāmaham) - of his father and grandfather; पदम् (padam) - position;]
Vicitravīrya, then remaining in Bhīṣma’s counsel, ruled, O great king, in the position held by his father and grandfather.
स धर्मशास्त्रकुशलो भीष्मं शान्तनवं नृपः। पूजयामास धर्मेण स चैनं प्रत्यपालयत् ॥१-०९५-१४॥
sa dharma-śāstra-kuśalaḥ bhīṣmaṁ śāntanavaṁ nṛpaḥ. pūjayām āsa dharmeṇa sa ca enam pratyapālayat ॥14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मशास्त्रकुशलः (dharma-śāstra-kuśalaḥ) - skilled in the dharma-śāstras; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवम् (śāntanavam) - son of Śantanu; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; पूजयामास (pūjayām āsa) - honored; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - righteously; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रत्यपालयत् (pratyapālayat) - obeyed (took guidance from);]
The king, skilled in the law of righteousness, duly honored Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, and followed his guidance in rule.
