भीष्म उवाच॥
bhīṣma uvāca॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhīṣma said:
जामदग्न्येन रामेण पितुर्वधममृष्यता । क्रुद्धेन च महाभागे हैहयाधिपतिर्हतः । शतानि दश बाहूनां निकृत्तान्यर्जुनस्य वै ॥१-०९७-१॥
jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa pitur vadham amṛṣyatā. kruddhena ca mahābhāge haihayādhipatiḥ hataḥ. śatāni daśa bāhūnāṁ nikṛttāni arjunasya vai ॥1॥
[जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by the son of Jamadagni; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - Rāma; पितुः-वधम् (pituḥ vadham) - the killing of his father; अमृष्यता (amṛṣyatā) - could not bear; क्रुद्धेन-च (kruddhena ca) - being enraged; महा-भागे (mahābhāge) - the greatly fortunate one; हैहय-अधिपतिः (haihaya-adhipatiḥ) - the king of the Haihayas; हतः (hataḥ) - was slain; शतानि-दश (śatāni daśa) - ten hundreds; बाहूनाम् (bāhūnām) - of arms; निकृत्तानि (nikṛttāni) - were severed; अर्जुनस्य-वै (arjunasya vai) - of Arjuna indeed;]
Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, unable to bear his father's slaying, slew the Haihaya king in anger; indeed, ten hundred arms of Arjuna were severed.
पुनश्च धनुरादाय महास्त्राणि प्रमुञ्चता । निर्दग्धं क्षत्रमसकृद्रथेन जयता महीम् ॥१-०९७-२॥
punaś ca dhanur ādāya mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā. nirdagdhaṁ kṣatram asakṛt rathena jayatā mahīm ॥2॥
[पुनः-च (punaś ca) - again; धनुः-आदाय (dhanur ādāya) - having taken up his bow; महा-अस्त्राणि (mahāstrāṇi) - great weapons; प्रमुञ्चता (pramuñcatā) - releasing; निर्दग्धम् (nirdagdham) - burned down; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya class; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; जयता (jayatā) - conquering; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth;]
Again, taking up his bow and releasing great weapons, he repeatedly burned down the kṣatriya race while conquering the earth in his chariot.
एवमुच्चावचैरस्त्रैर्भार्गवेण महात्मना । त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी कृता निःक्षत्रिया पुरा ॥१-०९७-३॥
evam uccāvacaiḥ astraiḥ bhārgaveṇa mahātmanā. triḥ-sapta-kṛtvaḥ pṛthivī kṛtā niḥkṣatriyā purā ॥3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उच्चावचैः-अस्त्रैः (uccāvacaiḥ astraiḥ) - with varied (great and small) weapons; भार्गवेण (bhārgaveṇa) - by the descendant of Bhṛgu; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great soul; त्रिः-सप्त-कृत्वः (triḥ-sapta-kṛtvaḥ) - twenty-one times; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; कृता (kṛtā) - was made; निःक्षत्रिया (niḥkṣatriyā) - devoid of kṣatriyas; पुरा (purā) - in ancient times;]
Thus, with various great and small weapons, the great Bhārgava made the earth devoid of kṣatriyas twenty-one times in ancient times.
ततः सम्भूय सर्वाभिः क्षत्रियाभिः समन्ततः । उत्पादितान्यपत्यानि ब्राह्मणैर्नियतात्मभिः ॥१-०९७-४॥
tataḥ sambhūya sarvābhiḥ kṣatriyābhiḥ samantataḥ. utpāditāni apatyāni brāhmaṇaiḥ niyata-ātmabhiḥ ॥4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - having come together; सर्वाभिः-क्षत्रियाभिः (sarvābhiḥ kṣatriyābhiḥ) - by all the kṣatriya women; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all directions; उत्पादितानि (utpāditāni) - were begotten; अपत्यानि (apatyāni) - offspring; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by brāhmaṇas; नियत-आत्मभिः (niyata-ātmabhiḥ) - of disciplined mind;]
Then, uniting with the kṣatriya women from all quarters, disciplined brāhmaṇas begot offspring.
पाणिग्राहस्य तनय इति वेदेषु निश्चितम् । धर्मं मनसि संस्थाप्य ब्राह्मणांस्ताः समभ्ययुः । लोकेऽप्याचरितो दृष्टः क्षत्रियाणां पुनर्भवः ॥१-०९७-५॥
pāṇi-grāhasya tanaya iti vedeṣu niścitam. dharmaṁ manasi saṁsthāpya brāhmaṇān tāḥ samabhyayuḥ. loke api ācarito dṛṣṭaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ punar-bhavaḥ ॥5॥
[पाणिग्राहस्य (pāṇi-grāhasya) - of the husband; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - the son; इति (iti) - thus; वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; निश्चितम् (niścitam) - is established; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; मनसि (manasi) - in mind; संस्थाप्य (saṁsthāpya) - having established; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - brāhmaṇas; ताः (tāḥ) - they (the women); समभ्ययुः (samabhyayuḥ) - approached; लोके-अपि (loke api) - even in the world; आचरितः (ācaritaḥ) - practiced; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - is seen; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; पुनः-भवः (punar-bhavaḥ) - rebirth or regeneration;]
It is established in the Vedas that the son is of the one who accepts the hand (husband); having fixed dharma in their minds, they approached the brāhmaṇas. Even in the world, the rebirth of the kṣatriyas is seen to have been practiced.
अथोतथ्य इति ख्यात आसीद्धीमानृषिः पुरा । ममता नाम तस्यासीद्भार्या परमसंमता ॥१-०९७-६॥
atha utathya iti khyātaḥ āsīd dhīmān ṛṣiḥ purā. mamatā nāma tasya āsīt bhāryā parama-saṁmatā ॥6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उतथ्य (utathya) - Utathya; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - renowned; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; धीमान्-ऋषिः (dhīmān ṛṣiḥ) - a wise seer; पुरा (purā) - in ancient times; ममता-नाम (mamatā nāma) - named Mamatā; तस्य (tasya) - his; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; परम-संमता (parama-saṁmatā) - greatly cherished;]
Then there was a wise seer named Utathya in ancient times. His wife, greatly cherished, was named Mamatā.
उतथ्यस्य यवीयांस्तु पुरोधास्त्रिदिवौकसाम् । बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजा ममतां सोऽन्वपद्यत ॥१-०९७-७॥
utathyasya yavīyān tu purodhāḥ tridivaukasām. bṛhaspatiḥ bṛhat-tejā mamatāṁ saḥ anvapadyata ॥7॥
[उतथ्यस्य (utathyasya) - of Utathya; यवीयान्-तु (yavīyān tu) - the younger brother, however; पुरोधाः (purodhāḥ) - priest; त्रिदिव-उकसाम् (tridiva-ukasām) - of the dwellers in heaven; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; बृहत्-तेजाः (bṛhat-tejāḥ) - of great splendor; ममताम् (mamatām) - Mamatā; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - approached (with desire);]
Bṛhaspati, the younger brother of Utathya, the priest of the gods and of great splendor, approached Mamatā with desire.
उवाच ममता तं तु देवरं वदतां वरम् । अन्तर्वत्नी अहं भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेनारम्यतामिति ॥१-०९७-८॥
uvāca mamatā taṁ tu devaraṁ vadatāṁ varam. antarvatnī ahaṁ bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena āramyatām iti ॥8॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; ममता (mamatā) - Mamatā; तम्-तु (tam tu) - to him, however; देवरम् (devaraṁ) - younger brother-in-law; वदतां-वरम् (vadatāṁ varam) - best of speakers; अन्तर्वत्नी (antarvatnī) - I am pregnant; अहम् (aham) - I; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by (your) brother; ज्येष्ठेन (jyeṣṭhena) - elder; आराम्यताम् (āramyatām) - let me be spared; इति (iti) - thus;]
Mamatā said to him, the younger brother-in-law and best of speakers, “I am pregnant by your elder brother — let me be spared.”
अयं च मे महाभाग कुक्षावेव बृहस्पते । औतथ्यो वेदमत्रैव षडङ्गं प्रत्यधीयत ॥१-०९७-९॥
ayaṁ ca me mahābhāga kukṣāva eva bṛhaspate. autathyo vedam atraiva ṣaḍ-aṅgaṁ pratyadhīyata ॥9॥
[अयम्-च (ayaṁ ca) - and this (child); मे (me) - my; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; कुक्षौ-एव (kukṣau eva) - in the womb itself; बृहस्पते (bṛhaspate) - O Bṛhaspati; औतथ्यः (autathyaḥ) - the son of Utathya; वेदम् (vedam) - the Veda; अत्र-एव (atra eva) - right here; षडङ्गम् (ṣaḍ-aṅgam) - with its six limbs; प्रत्यधीयत (pratyadhīyata) - is being learned;]
And, O greatly fortunate Bṛhaspati, this son of mine, in the womb itself, is already studying the Veda with its six limbs.
अमोघरेतास्त्वं चापि नूनं भवितुमर्हसि । तस्मादेवङ्गतेऽद्य त्वमुपारमितुमर्हसि ॥१-०९७-१०॥
amogha-retās tvaṁ ca api nūnaṁ bhavitum arhasi. tasmāt evaṁ-gate adya tvaṁ upāramitum arhasi ॥10॥
[अमोघ-रेताः (amogha-retās) - one whose seed is never in vain; त्वम्-च-अपि (tvaṁ ca api) - you also; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - certainly; भवितुम्-अर्हसि (bhavitum arhasi) - ought to be; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एवं-गते (evaṁ-gate) - in such a situation; अद्य (adya) - now; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; उपारमितुम्-अर्हसि (upāramitum arhasi) - ought to desist;]
You, whose seed is never in vain, ought certainly to be so; therefore, in such a situation now, you ought to desist.
एवमुक्तस्तया सम्यग्बृहत्तेजा बृहस्पतिः । कामात्मानं तदात्मानं न शशाक नियच्छितुम् ॥१-०९७-११॥
evam uktas tayā samyag bṛhat-tejā bṛhaspatiḥ. kāmātmānaṁ tad ātmānaṁ na śaśāka niyacchitum ॥11॥
[एवम्-उक्तः (evam uktas) - thus addressed; तया (tayā) - by her; सम्यक् (samyag) - properly; बृहत्-तेजाः (bṛhat-tejāḥ) - of great brilliance; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; काम-आत्मानम् (kāmātmānam) - dominated by desire; तत्-आत्मानम् (tat ātmānam) - his own self; न-शशाक (na śaśāka) - could not; नियच्छितुम् (niyacchitum) - restrain;]
Thus properly addressed by her, the radiant Bṛhaspati, dominated by desire, could not restrain his own self.
सम्बभूव ततः कामी तया सार्धमकामया । उत्सृजन्तं तु तं रेतः स गर्भस्थोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१-०९७-१२॥
sambabhūva tataḥ kāmī tayā sārdham akāmayā. utsṛjantaṁ tu taṁ retaḥ sa garbha-sthaḥ abhyabhāṣata ॥12॥
[सम्बभूव (sambabhūva) - united; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कामी (kāmī) - desirous one; तया (tayā) - with her; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अकामया (akāmayā) - unwilling; उत्सृजन्तम् (utsṛjantam) - releasing; तु (tu) - but; तम्-रेतः (tam retaḥ) - that semen; सः (saḥ) - he; गर्भस्थः (garbha-sthaḥ) - dwelling in the womb; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke;]
Then, the desirous one united with the unwilling woman, and as he released his semen, the child dwelling in the womb spoke.
भोस्तात कन्यस वदे द्वयोर्नास्त्यत्र सम्भवः । अमोघशुक्रश्च भवान्पूर्वं चाहमिहागतः ॥१-०९७-१३॥
bhoḥ tāta kanyasa vade dvayoḥ na asti atra sambhavaḥ. amogha-śukraś ca bhavān pūrvaṁ ca aham iha āgataḥ ॥13॥
[भोः-तात (bhoḥ tāta) - O revered one; कन्यस-वदे (kanyasa vade) - speak as to a maiden (pleading tone); द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of both; न-अस्ति (na asti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; सम्भवः (sambhavaḥ) - union; अमोघ-शुक्रः-च (amogha-śukraś ca) - your seed is unfailing; भवान् (bhavān) - you; पूर्वम्-च (pūrvam ca) - earlier; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have arrived;]
O revered one, speak as you would to a maiden: there can be no union between us both; your seed is unfailing, and I have already arrived here before you.
शशाप तं ततः क्रुद्ध एवमुक्तो बृहस्पतिः । उतथ्यपुत्रं गर्भस्थं निर्भर्त्स्य भगवानृषिः ॥१-०९७-१४॥
śaśāpa taṁ tataḥ kruddhaḥ evam-ukto bṛhaspatiḥ. utathya-putraṁ garbha-sthaṁ nirbhartsya bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ॥14॥
[शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; तम् (tam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; एवम्-उक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; उतथ्य-पुत्रम् (utathya-putram) - the son of Utathya; गर्भस्थम् (garbha-stham) - in the womb; निर्भर्त्स्य (nirbhartsya) - having rebuked; भगवान्-ऋषिः (bhagavān ṛṣiḥ) - the revered seer;]
Then, thus addressed, the angry Bṛhaspati cursed the son of Utathya who was still in the womb, rebuking him, the revered seer.
यस्मात्त्वमीदृशे काले सर्वभूतेप्सिते सति । एवमात्थ वचस्तस्मात्तमो दीर्घं प्रवेक्ष्यसि ॥१-०९७-१५॥
yasmāt tvam īdṛśe kāle sarva-bhūta-īpsite sati. evam-āttha vacaḥ tasmāt tamaḥ dīrghaṁ pravekṣyasi ॥15॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ईदृशे-काले (īdṛśe kāle) - in such a moment; सर्व-भूत-इप्सिते (sarva-bhūta-īpsite) - desired by all beings; सति (sati) - being so; एवम्-आत्थ-वचः (evam āttha vacaḥ) - spoke such words; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; प्रवेक्ष्यसि (pravekṣyasi) - you shall enter;]
Because you spoke thus at such a moment, though it was desired by all beings, therefore you shall enter a long darkness.
स वै दीर्घतमा नाम शापादृषिरजायत । बृहस्पतेर्बृहत्कीर्तेर्बृहस्पतिरिवौजसा ॥१-०९७-१६॥
sa vai dīrghatamā nāma śāpāt ṛṣiḥ ajāyata. bṛhaspateḥ bṛhat-kīrteḥ bṛhaspatiḥ iva aujasā ॥16॥
[सः-वै (sa vai) - he indeed; दीर्घतमाः-नाम (dīrghatamā nāma) - named Dīrghatamā; शापात् (śāpāt) - due to the curse; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the seer; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; बृहस्पतेः (bṛhaspateḥ) - of Bṛhaspati; बृहत्-कीर्तेः (bṛhat-kīrteḥ) - of great fame; बृहस्पतिः-इव (bṛhaspatiḥ iva) - like Bṛhaspati; औजसा (aujasā) - in power;]
Thus, due to the curse, the seer named Dīrghatamā was born — the son of Bṛhaspati, renowned, and powerful like Bṛhaspati himself.
स पुत्राञ्जनयामास गौतमादीन्महायशाः । ऋषेरुतथ्यस्य तदा सन्तानकुलवृद्धये ॥१-०९७-१७॥
saḥ putrān janayām āsa gautamādīn mahā-yaśāḥ. ṛṣeḥ utathyasya tadā santāna-kula-vṛddhaye ॥17॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; जनयाम्-आस (janayām āsa) - begot; गौतम-आदीन् (gautamādīn) - Gautama and others; महा-यशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the seer; उतथ्यस्य (utathyasya) - Utathya; तदा (tadā) - then; सन्तान-कुल-वृद्धये (santāna-kula-vṛddhaye) - for the increase of the family line;]
He, greatly renowned, begot sons like Gautama and others for the seer Utathya, in order to continue the family line.
लोभमोहाभिभूतास्ते पुत्रास्तं गौतमादयः । काष्ठे समुद्गे प्रक्षिप्य गङ्गायां समवासृजन् ॥१-०९७-१८॥
lobha-moha-abhibhūtāḥ te putrāḥ taṁ gautama-ādayaḥ. kāṣṭhe samudge prakṣipya gaṅgāyāṁ samavāsṛjan ॥18॥
[लोभ-मोह-अभिभूताः (lobha-moha-abhibhūtāḥ) - overcome by greed and delusion; ते (te) - they; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तं (tam) - him; गौतम-आदयः (gautama-ādayaḥ) - Gautama and others; काष्ठे (kāṣṭhe) - into a wooden (box); समुद्गे (samudge) - casket; प्रक्षिप्य (prakṣipya) - having placed; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Ganges; समवासृजन् (samavāsṛjan) - they cast him off;]
Overcome by greed and delusion, his sons — Gautama and the rest — placed him in a wooden casket and cast him into the Ganges.
न स्यादन्धश्च वृद्धश्च भर्तव्योऽयमिति स्म ते । चिन्तयित्वा ततः क्रूराः प्रतिजग्मुरथो गृहान् ॥१-०९७-१९॥
na syāt andhaś ca vṛddhaś ca bhartavyaḥ ayam iti sma te. cintayitvā tataḥ krūrāḥ pratijagmuḥ atho gṛhān ॥19॥
[न-स्यात् (na syāt) - should not be; अन्धः-च (andhaś ca) - blind and; वृद्धः-च (vṛddhaś ca) - old also; भर्तव्यः (bhartavyaḥ) - to be supported; अयम् (ayam) - this one; इति-स्म (iti sma) - thus indeed; ते (te) - they; चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having thought; ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रूराः (krūrāḥ) - cruel; प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuḥ) - returned; अथः-गृहान् (atho gṛhān) - to their homes;]
They thought, “He is blind and old — he should not have to be maintained”; and so, those cruel ones returned to their homes.
सोऽनुस्रोतस्तदा राजन्प्लवमान ऋषिस्ततः । जगाम सुबहून्देशानन्धस्तेनोडुपेन ह ॥१-०९७-२०॥
so'nu-srotaḥ tadā rājan plavamāna ṛṣiḥ tataḥ. jagāma subahūn deśān andhaḥ tena oḍupena ha ॥20॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अनुस्रोतः (anu-srotaḥ) - following the current; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्लवमानः (plavamānaḥ) - floating; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the seer; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सुबहून्-देशान् (subahūn deśān) - many regions; अन्धः (andhaḥ) - blind; तेन-ओडुपेन-ह (tena oḍupena ha) - by that vessel indeed;]
Floating with the current, O king, the blind seer then drifted and reached many regions, carried along in that vessel.
तं तु राजा बलिर्नाम सर्वधर्मविशारदः । अपश्यन्मज्जनगतः स्रोतसाभ्याशमागतम् ॥१-०९७-२१॥
taṁ tu rājā baliḥ nāma sarva-dharma-viśāradaḥ. apaśyan majjan-gataḥ srotasābhyāśam āgatam ॥21॥
[तम्-तु (taṁ tu) - him indeed; राजा (rājā) - the king; बलिः-नाम (baliḥ nāma) - named Bali; सर्व-धर्म-विशारदः (sarva-dharma-viśāradaḥ) - well-versed in all dharma; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; मज्जन-गतः (majjan-gataḥ) - immersed; स्रोतसा-अभ्याशम्-आगतम् (srotasābhyāśam āgatam) - arrived near the current;]
The king named Bali, well-versed in all dharma, saw him floating near the current, immersed in the waters.
जग्राह चैनं धर्मात्मा बलिः सत्यपराक्रमः । ज्ञात्वा चैनं स वव्रेऽथ पुत्रार्थं मनुजर्षभ ॥१-०९७-२२॥
jagrāha ca enaṁ dharmātmā baliḥ satya-parākramaḥ. jñātvā ca enaṁ sa vavre atha putra-artham manuja-ṛṣabha ॥22॥
[जग्राह-च-एनम् (jagrāha ca enam) - and seized him; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali; सत्य-पराक्रमः (satya-parākramaḥ) - true in valor; ज्ञात्वा-च-एनम् (jñātvā ca enam) - and having known him; सः (saḥ) - he; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; अथ (atha) - then; पुत्र-अर्थम् (putra-artham) - for the sake of sons; मनुज-ऋषभ (manuja-ṛṣabha) - O best of men;]
The righteous and truly valiant Bali seized him, and having recognized him, sought him then for begetting sons, O best of men.
सन्तानार्थं महाभाग भार्यासु मम मानद । पुत्रान्धर्मार्थकुशलानुत्पादयितुमर्हसि ॥१-०९७-२३॥
santānārthaṁ mahābhāga bhāryāsu mama mānada. putrān dharma-artha-kuśalān utpādayitum arhasi ॥23॥
[सन्तान-अर्थम् (santāna-artham) - for progeny; महा-भाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; भार्यासु (bhāryāsu) - in my wives; मम (mama) - my; मानद (mānada) - O honor-giver; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; धर्म-अर्थ-कुशलान् (dharma-artha-kuśalān) - skilled in dharma and artha; उत्पादयितुम् (utpādayitum) - to beget; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
O greatly fortunate one, in my wives, you ought to beget sons skilled in dharma and artha, for the sake of progeny, O giver of honor.
एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी तं तथेत्युक्तवानृषिः । तस्मै स राजा स्वां भार्यां सुदेष्णां प्राहिणोत्तदा ॥१-०९७-२४॥
evam uktaḥ sa tejasvī taṁ tathā iti uktavān ṛṣiḥ. tasmai sa rājā svāṁ bhāryāṁ sudeṣṇāṁ prāhiṇot tadā ॥24॥
[एवम्-उक्तः (evam uktaḥ) - thus addressed; सः-तेजस्वी (saḥ tejasvī) - that brilliant one; तम् (tam) - to him; तथा-इति-उक्तवान् (tathā iti uktavān) - replied “so be it”; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the seer; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सः-राजा (saḥ rājā) - that king; स्वाम्-भार्याम् (svām bhāryām) - his own wife; सुदेष्णाम् (sudeṣṇām) - Sudeṣṇā; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Thus addressed, the brilliant seer replied “So be it,” and then the king sent his own wife Sudeṣṇā to him.
अन्धं वृद्धं च तं मत्वा न सा देवी जगाम ह । स्वां तु धात्रेयिकां तस्मै वृद्धाय प्राहिणोत्तदा ॥१-०९७-२५॥
andhaṁ vṛddhaṁ ca taṁ matvā na sā devī jagāma ha. svāṁ tu dhātreyikāṁ tasmai vṛddhāya prāhiṇot tadā ॥25॥
[अन्धम्-च-वृद्धम्-च (andhaṁ ca vṛddham ca) - blind and old; तम् (tam) - him; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; न-सा (na sā) - she did not; देवी (devī) - the queen; जगाम (jagāma) - go (to him); स्वाम्-तु (svām tu) - but her own; धात्रेयिकाम् (dhātreyikām) - maidservant; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; वृद्धाय (vṛddhāya) - to the old man; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Thinking him to be blind and old, the queen did not go to him herself, but instead sent her own maidservant to the old seer.
तस्यां काक्षीवदादीन्स शूद्रयोनावृषिर्वशी । जनयामास धर्मात्मा पुत्रानेकादशैव तु ॥१-०९७-२६॥
tasyāṁ kākṣīvad-ādīn śūdra-yonau ṛṣiḥ vaśī. janayām āsa dharmātmā putrān ekādaśa eva tu ॥26॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; काक्षीवद-आदीन् (kākṣīvad-ādīn) - Kāksīvata and others; शूद्र-योनौ (śūdra-yonau) - in a śūdra womb; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the seer; वशी (vaśī) - self-controlled; जनयाम्-आस (janayām āsa) - begot; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; एकादश-एव-तु (ekādaśa eva tu) - eleven in number indeed;]
In that maidservant, the self-controlled and righteous seer begot eleven sons, including Kāksīvata and others, in the śūdra womb.
काक्षीवदादीन् पुत्रान् तान् दृष्ट्वा सर्वानधीयतः । उवाच तमृषिं राजा ममैत इति वीर्यवान् ॥१-०९७-२७॥
kākṣīvad-ādīn putrān tān dṛṣṭvā sarvān adhīyataḥ. uvāca tam ṛṣiṁ rājā mama ete iti vīryavān ॥27॥
[काक्षीवद-आदीन् (kākṣīvad-ādīn) - Kāksīvata and others; पुत्रान्-तान् (putrān tān) - those sons; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अधीयतः (adhīyataḥ) - studying (the Veda); उवाच (uvāca) - said; तम्-ऋषिम् (tam ṛṣiṁ) - to the seer; राजा (rājā) - the king; मम-एते-इति (mama ete iti) - these are mine, thus; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - full of vigor;]
Seeing all those sons like Kāksīvata engaged in study, the vigorous king said to the seer, “These are mine.”
नेत्युवाच महर्षिस्तं ममैवैत इति ब्रुवन् । शूद्रयोनौ मया हीमे जाताः काक्षीवदादयः ॥१-०९७-२८॥
neti uvāca maharṣiḥ taṁ mama eva ete iti bruvan. śūdra-yonau mayā hi ime jātāḥ kākṣīvad-ādayaḥ ॥28॥
[न-इति (na iti) - no, thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great seer; तम् (tam) - to him; मम-एव-एते (mama eva ete) - they are mine only; इति-ब्रुवन् (iti bruvan) - saying thus; शूद्र-योनौ (śūdra-yonau) - in a śūdra womb; मया-हि (mayā hi) - by me indeed; इमे (ime) - these; जाताः (jātāḥ) - were born; काक्षीवद-आदयः (kākṣīvad-ādayaḥ) - Kāksīvata and the rest;]
The great seer said, “No, these are mine indeed; Kāksīvata and the rest were born by me in a śūdra womb.”
अन्धं वृद्धं च मां मत्वा सुदेष्णा महिषी तव । अवमन्य ददौ मूढा शूद्रां धात्रेयिकां हि मे ॥१-०९७-२९॥
andhaṁ vṛddhaṁ ca māṁ matvā sudeṣṇā mahiṣī tava. avamanya dadau mūḍhā śūdrāṁ dhātreyikāṁ hi me ॥29॥
[अन्धम्-वृद्धम्-च (andhaṁ vṛddham ca) - blind and old; माम् (mām) - me; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; सुदेष्णा (sudeṣṇā) - Sudeṣṇā; महिषी-तव (mahiṣī tava) - your queen; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; ददौ (dadau) - gave; मूढा (mūḍhā) - the foolish one; शूद्राम् (śūdrām) - the śūdra woman; धात्रेयिकाम्-हि-मे (dhātreyikāṁ hi me) - her maidservant indeed to me;]
Thinking me to be blind and old, your queen Sudeṣṇā, in her folly, disregarded me and gave me her śūdra maidservant.
ततः प्रसादयामास पुनस्तमृषिसत्तमम् । बलिः सुदेष्णां भार्यां च तस्मै तां प्राहिणोत्पुनः ॥१-०९७-३०॥
tataḥ prasādayām āsa punaḥ tam ṛṣi-sattamam. baliḥ sudeṣṇāṁ bhāryāṁ ca tasmai tāṁ prāhiṇot punaḥ ॥30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रसादयाम्-आस (prasādayām āsa) - appeased; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तम्-ऋषि-सत्तमम् (tam ṛṣi-sattamam) - that excellent seer; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali; सुदेष्णाम् (sudeṣṇām) - Sudeṣṇā; भार्याम्-च (bhāryāṁ ca) - his wife also; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ताम् (tām) - her; प्राहिणोत्-पुनः (prāhiṇot punaḥ) - sent again;]
Then king Bali again appeased that excellent seer, and sent his wife Sudeṣṇā to him once more.
तां स दीर्घतमाङ्गेषु स्पृष्ट्वा देवीमथाब्रवीत् । भविष्यति कुमारस्ते तेजस्वी सत्यवागिति ॥१-०९७-३१॥
tāṁ sa dīrghatamā-aṅgeṣu spṛṣṭvā devīm atha abravīt. bhaviṣyati kumāraḥ te tejasvī satya-vāk iti ॥31॥
[ताम् (tāṁ) - her; सः (saḥ) - he; दीर्घतमाः (dīrghatamāḥ) - Dīrghatamā; अङ्गेषु (aṅgeṣu) - on the limbs; स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; देवीम् (devīm) - the queen; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - there will be; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - a son; ते (te) - to you; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; सत्यवाक् (satya-vāk) - truth-speaking; इति (iti) - thus;]
Having touched her limbs, Dīrghatamā said to the queen, “You will have a brilliant and truth-speaking son.”
तत्राङ्गो नाम राजर्षिः सुदेष्णायामजायत । एवमन्ये महेष्वासा ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रिया भुवि ॥१-०९७-३२॥
tatra aṅgaḥ nāma rājarṣiḥ sudeṣṇāyām ajāyata. evam anye mahā-iṣvāsaḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyā bhuvi ॥32॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अङ्गः-नाम (aṅgaḥ nāma) - named Aṅga; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal seer; सुदेष्णायाम् (sudeṣṇāyām) - in Sudeṣṇā; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; एवम् (evam) - thus; अन्ये (anye) - other; महा-इष्वासाः (mahā-iṣvāsaḥ) - great archers; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
There, a royal sage named Aṅga was born of Sudeṣṇā. In this way, other great bowmen — kṣatriyas — were born of brāhmaṇas on earth.
जाताः परमधर्मज्ञा वीर्यवन्तो महाबलाः । एतच्छ्रुत्वा त्वमप्यत्र मातः कुरु यथेप्सितम् ॥१-०९७-३३॥
jātāḥ parama-dharma-jñā vīryavanto mahā-balāḥ. etat śrutvā tvam api atra mātaḥ kuru yathā-ipsitam ॥33॥
[जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; परम-धर्मज्ञाः (parama-dharma-jñāḥ) - supremely knowledgeable in dharma; वीर्यवन्तः (vīryavantaḥ) - powerful; महा-बलाः (mahā-balāḥ) - of great strength; एतत्-श्रुत्वा (etat śrutvā) - having heard this; त्वम्-अपि (tvam api) - you also; अत्र (atra) - in this matter; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; कुरु (kuru) - do; यथा-इप्सितम् (yathā-ipsitam) - as is desired;]
Born were men supremely knowledgeable in dharma, powerful and of great strength. Hearing this, you too, O mother, act as you desire in this matter.
