Kunti said:
न विषादस्त्वया कार्यो भयादस्मात्कथञ्चन । उपायः परिदृष्टोऽत्र तस्मान्मोक्षाय रक्षसः ॥१॥
na viṣādastvayā kāryo bhayādasmāt kathañcana। upāyaḥ paridṛṣṭo'tra tasmān mokṣāya rakṣasaḥ ॥1॥
[न (na) - not; विषादः (viṣādaḥ) - sorrow; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यो (kāryo) - should be done; भयात् (bhayāt) - due to fear; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; कथेञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - the means; परिदृष्टः (paridṛṣṭo) - seen thoroughly; अत्र (atra) - here; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मोक्षाय (mokṣāya) - for liberation; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - O demon;]
Do not be sorrowful, for this should not be done by you out of fear. The means have been thoroughly seen here, therefore, O demon, for liberation.
एकस्तव सुतो बालः कन्या चैका तपस्विनी । न ते तयोस्तथा पत्न्या गमनं तत्र रोचये ॥२॥
eka-stava suto bālaḥ kanyā caikā tapasvinī। na te tayos tathā patnyā gamanaṁ tatra rocaye ॥2॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; तव (tava) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; चैका (caikā) - one; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic; न (na) - not; ते (te) - yours; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them; तथा (tathā) - thus; पत्न्या (patnyā) - the wife; गमनं (gamanaṁ) - going; तत्र (tatra) - there; रोचये (rocaye) - I like;]
You have one son and one daughter, both ascetics. But I do not like their going there as your wives.
मम पञ्च सुता ब्रह्मंस्तेषामेको गमिष्यति । त्वदर्थं बलिमादाय तस्य पापस्य रक्षसः ॥३॥
mama pañca sutā brahmaṁsteṣāmeko gamiṣyati। tvadarthaṁ balimādāya tasya pāpasya rakṣasaḥ ॥3॥
[मम (mama) - my; पञ्च (pañca) - five; सुता (sutā) - daughters; ब्रह्मं (brahmaṁ) - to Brahman; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go; त्वदर्थं (tvadarthaṁ) - for your cause; बलिमादाय (balimādāya) - taking the offering; तस्य (tasya) - his; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - the demon;]
One of my five daughters will go to Brahman, taking an offering for your cause. The demon will bear the consequences of his sin.
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brahman; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
The Brahman said:
नाहमेतत्करिष्यामि जीवितार्थी कथञ्चन । ब्राह्मणस्यातिथेश्चैव स्वार्थे प्राणैर्वियोजनम् ॥४॥
nāhametat kariṣyāmi jīvitārthī kathañcana। brāhmaṇasyātithēścaiva svārthe prāṇair viyojanam ॥4॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - will do; जीवितार्थी (jīvitārthī) - one seeking life; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahman; आतिथेश्चैव (ātithēścaiva) - and the guest; स्वार्थे (svārthe) - for his own purpose; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life; विलोजनम् (viyojanam) - separation;]
I will not do this, for the sake of life, in any way. Nor will I separate the life for the Brahman or the guest for their own purpose.
न त्वेतदकुलीनासु नाधर्मिष्ठासु विद्यते । यद्ब्राह्मणार्थे विसृजेदात्मानमपि चात्मजम् ॥५॥
na tvetadakulīnāsu nādharmiṣṭhāsu vidyate। yadbrahmaṇārthe visṛjēd-ātmānamapi cātmajam ॥5॥
[न (na) - not; त्वेतद् (tvetad) - this; अकुलीनासु (akulīnāsu) - in those without lineage; नाधर्मिष्ठासु (nādharmiṣṭhāsu) - in those without righteousness; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; यत् (yat) - that which; ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthe) - for the Brahman’s purpose; विसृजेत (visṛjēd) - should give up; आत्मानम् (ātmanam) - oneself; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son;]
There is no righteousness in those without lineage and without Dharma. One should not give up oneself or even the son for the Brahman’s cause.
आत्मनस्तु मया श्रेयो बोद्धव्यमिति रोचये । ब्रह्मवध्यात्मवध्या वा श्रेय आत्मवधो मम ॥६॥
ātmanastu mayā śreyo boddhavyamiti rocaye। brahmavadhyātma-vadhyā vā śrēya ātmavadhō mama ॥6॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanah) - of the self; तु (tu) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; श्रेयो (śrēyo) - better; बोद्धव्यम् (boddhavyam) - to be understood; इति (iti) - thus; रोचये (rocaye) - I like; ब्रह्मवध्यात्मवध्या (brahmavadhyātma-vadhyā) - the killing of a Brahman or a self; वा (vā) - or; श्रेयो (śrēyo) - better; आत्मवधो (ātma-vadhō) - self-destruction; मम (mama) - my;]
Indeed, I prefer the better path, which is the understanding of the self. The killing of a Brahman or self-destruction is indeed better for me.
ब्रह्मवध्या परं पापं निष्कृतिर्नात्र विद्यते । अबुद्धिपूर्वं कृत्वापि श्रेय आत्मवधो मम ॥७॥
brahmavadhyā paraṁ pāpaṁ niṣkṛtirnātra vidyate। abuddhipūrvam kṛtvāpi śrēyo ātma-vadhō mama ॥7॥
[ब्रह्मवध्या (brahmavadhyā) - killing of a Brahman; परं (paraṁ) - supreme; पापं (pāpaṁ) - sin; निष्कृतिरी (niṣkṛtirnā) - expiation; नात्र (nātra) - not here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; अबुद्धिपूर्वं (abuddhipūrvam) - done with ignorance; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - after doing; अपि (api) - even; श्रेयो (śrēyo) - better; आत्मवधो (ātma-vadhō) - self-destruction; मम (mama) - my;]
The killing of a Brahman is the greatest sin, there is no expiation for it. Even if done in ignorance, self-destruction is better for me.
न त्वहं वधमाकाङ्क्षे स्वयमेवात्मनः शुभे । परैः कृते वधे पापं न किञ्चिन्मयि विद्यते ॥८॥
na tvahaṁ vadhamākāṅkṣe svayamevātmanah śubhē। paraih kṛtē vadhe pāpaṁ na kiñcinmayi vidyate ॥8॥
[न (na) - not; त्वहं (tvahaṁ) - I; वधं (vadham) - the killing; आकाङ्क्षे (ākāṅkṣe) - desire; स्वयम् (svayam) - by myself; एव (eva) - only; आत्मनः (ātmanah) - of the self; शुभे (śubhē) - auspicious; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; कृते (kṛtē) - done; वधे (vadhe) - in killing; पापं (pāpaṁ) - sin; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; मयि (mayi) - in me; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
I do not desire to kill, I prefer my own good. If done by others, I do not bear the sin in me.
अभिसन्धिकृते तस्मिन्ब्राह्मणस्य वधे मया । निष्कृतिं न प्रपश्यामि नृशंसं क्षुद्रमेव च ॥९॥
abhisaṁdhikṛtē tasmin brāhmaṇasya vadhe mayā। niṣkṛtiṁ na prapaśyāmi nṛśaṁsaṁ kṣudramēva ca ॥9॥
[अभिसन्धिकृते (abhisaṁdhikṛtē) - when done with intent; तस्मिन (tasmin) - in him; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahman; वधे (vadhe) - killing; मया (mayā) - by me; निष्कृतिं (niṣkṛtiṁ) - expiation; न (na) - not; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruelty; क्षुद्रमेव (kṣudramēva) - very small; च (ca) - and;]
If I had done this with intent, I would not see any expiation, only cruelty and a very small sin.
आगतस्य गृहे त्यागस्तथैव शरणार्थिनः । याचमानस्य च वधो नृशंसं परमं मतम् ॥१०॥
āgatasya gṛhē tyāgastathēva śaraṇārthinaḥ। yācāmānasya ca vadho nṛśaṁsaṁ paramaṁ matam ॥10॥
[आगतस्य (āgatasya) - for the one who has come; गृहे (gṛhē) - in the house; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - renunciation; तथैव (tathēva) - in the same way; शरणार्थिनः (śaraṇārthinaḥ) - of the one seeking refuge; याचामानस्य (yācāmānasya) - of the one asking; च (ca) - and; वधो (vadho) - killing; नृशंसा (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruelty; परमं (paramam) - supreme; मतम् (matam) - opinion;]
For the one who has come, renunciation and similarly killing of a seeker is regarded as supreme cruelty, according to my opinion.
कुर्यान्न निन्दितं कर्म न नृशंसं कदाचन । इति पूर्वे महात्मान आपद्धर्मविदो विदुः ॥११॥
kuryān na ninditaṁ karma na nṛśaṁsaṁ kadācana। iti pūrve mahātman āpaddharmavido viduḥ ॥11॥
[कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; न (na) - not; निन्दितं (ninditaṁ) - condemned; कर्म (karma) - action; न (na) - not; नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruelty; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; इति (iti) - thus; पूर्वे (pūrve) - in the past; महात्मान् (mahātman) - the great souls; आपद्धर्मविदः (āpaddharmavido) - those who know the dharma of adversity; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
They should never perform condemned actions, nor cruelty at any time. Thus, the great souls of the past, who know the dharma of adversity, are aware.
श्रेयांस्तु सहदारस्य विनाशोऽद्य मम स्वयम् । ब्राह्मणस्य वधं नाहमनुमंस्ये कथञ्चन ॥१२॥
śreyāṁstu sahadārasya vināśo'dya mama svayam। brāhmaṇasya vadhaṁ nāhamanumansye kathāñcana ॥12॥
[श्रेयांस् (śreyāṁs) - better; तु (tu) - indeed; सहदारस्य (sahadārasya) - of the wife; विनाशो (vināśo) - destruction; अद्य (adya) - today; मम (mama) - my; स्वयम् (svayam) - by myself; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahman; वधं (vadhaṁ) - killing; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुमंस्ये (anumansye) - should approve; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
Indeed, the destruction of the wife today is better for me. I will not approve of the killing of a Brahman in any way.
कुंत्युवाच॥

[कुंती (kuntī) - Kunti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kunti said:
ममाप्येषा मतिर्ब्रह्मन्विप्रा रक्ष्या इति स्थिरा । न चाप्यनिष्टः पुत्रो मे यदि पुत्रशतं भवेत् ॥१३॥
mamāpyēṣā matir brahman viprā rakṣyā iti sthirā। na cāpyaniṣṭaḥ putro mē yadi putraśataṁ bhavet ॥13॥
[मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; एषा (eṣā) - this; मतिरे (matirē) - opinion; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; विप्रा (viprā) - the Brahman; रक्ष्या (rakṣyā) - to be protected; इति (iti) - thus; स्थिरा (sthira) - firm; न (na) - not; च (ca) - also; अपि (api) - if; अनिष्टः (aniṣṭaḥ) - inauspicious; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; मे (mē) - my; यदि (yadi) - if; पुत्रशतं (putraśataṁ) - a hundred sons; भवेत् (bhavet) - were to be born;]
My opinion is firm, O Brahman, that my sons should be protected. Even if a hundred sons were born to me, none would be inauspicious.
न चासौ राक्षसः शक्तो मम पुत्रविनाशने । वीर्यवान्मन्त्रसिद्धश्च तेजस्वी च सुतो मम ॥१४॥
na cāsau rākṣasaḥ śakto mama putravināśanē। vīryavān mantrasiddhaśca tējassvī ca suto mama ॥14॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - he; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - demon; शक्तः (śakto) - capable; मम (mama) - of my; पुत्रविनाशने (putravināśanē) - destruction of sons; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; मन्त्रसिद्धः (mantrasiddhaḥ) - accomplished in mantras; च (ca) - and; तेजस्वी (tējassvī) - radiant; च (ca) - and; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; मम (mama) - my;]
The demon is not capable of destroying my sons. My son is powerful, accomplished in mantras, and radiant.
राक्षसाय च तत्सर्वं प्रापयिष्यति भोजनम् । मोक्षयिष्यति चात्मानमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥१५॥
rākṣasāya ca tat sarvaṁ prāpayīṣyati bhōjanam। mokṣayīṣyati cātmanamiti mē niścitā matiḥ ॥15॥
[राक्षसाय (rākṣasāya) - to the demon; च (ca) - and; तत्सर्वं (tat sarvaṁ) - all of that; प्रापयिष्यति (prāpayīṣyati) - will give; भोजनम् (bhōjanam) - food; मोक्षयिष्यति (mokṣayīṣyati) - will liberate; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmanam) - the soul; इति (iti) - thus; मे (mē) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - determined; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
The demon will provide all of that as food. He will liberate my soul, thus my opinion is determined.
समागताश्च वीरेण दृष्टपूर्वाश्च राक्षसाः । बलवन्तो महाकाया निहताश्चाप्यनेकशः ॥१६॥
samāgatāśca vīreṇa dṛṣṭapūrvāśca rākṣasāḥ। balavanto mahākāyā nihatāścāpyanekashaḥ ॥16॥
[समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - gathered; च (ca) - and; वीरेण (vīreṇa) - by the hero; दृष्टपूर्वाः (dṛṣṭapūrvāḥ) - who had been seen before; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons; बलवंतः (balavantaḥ) - powerful; महाकायाः (mahākāyāḥ) - of large bodies; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - killed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; अनेकशः (anekashaḥ) - many times;]
Those demons who had previously been seen, and gathered with the hero, were powerful and of great size. They were killed many times.
न त्विदं केषुचिद्ब्रह्मन्व्याहर्तव्यं कथञ्चन । विद्यार्थिनो हि मे पुत्रान्विप्रकुर्युः कुतूहलात् ॥१७॥
na tvidam kēṣucid brahman vyāhartavyaṁ kathañcana। vidyārthino hi mē putrān viprakuryuḥ kutūhalāt ॥17॥
[न (na) - not; त्विदं (tvidam) - this; केषुचिद् (keṣucid) - in any; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; व्याहर्तव्यम् (vyāhartavyaṁ) - should be said; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; विद्यार्थिनो (vidyārthino) - of the students; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (mē) - my; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; विप्रकुर्युः (viprakuryuḥ) - they will ask questions; कुतूहलात् (kutūhalāt) - out of curiosity;]
This should not be said in any way, O Brahman. Indeed, my sons will ask questions out of curiosity.
गुरुणा चाननुज्ञातो ग्राहयेद्यं सुतो मम । न स कुर्यात्तया कार्यं विद्ययेति सतां मतम् ॥१८॥
guruṇā cānanujñāto grāhayēdyaṁ suto mama। na sa kuryāt tayā kāryaṁ vidyayēti satāṁ matam ॥18॥
[गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; च (ca) - and; अननुज्ञातो (ananujñāto) - without permission; ग्राहयेत् (grāhayet) - should be made to take; यं (yaṁ) - whom; सुतो (suto) - the son; मम (mama) - my; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; तया (tayā) - by her; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - work; विद्याय (vidyāya) - for knowledge; इति (iti) - thus; सतां (satāṁ) - of the wise; मतम् (matam) - opinion;]
My son, without permission from the teacher, should not be made to take up work for knowledge, this is the opinion of the wise.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaishampayana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaishampayana said:
एवमुक्तस्तु पृथया स विप्रो भार्यया सह । हृष्टः सम्पूजयामास तद्वाक्यममृतोपमम् ॥१९॥
evamuktaḥ tu pṛthayā sa vipro bhāryayā saha। hṛṣṭaḥ sampūjayāmāsa tadvākyam amṛtopamam ॥19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been told; तु (tu) - indeed; पृथया (pṛthayā) - with the Earth; स (sa) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brahman; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - with his wife; सह (saha) - together; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - pleased; सम्पूजयामास (sampūjayāmāsa) - worshiped; तद्वाक्यम् (tadvākyam) - those words; अमृतोपमम् (amṛtopamam) - like nectar;]
Thus spoken to, the Brahman, pleased, worshiped with his wife, those words, which were like nectar.
ततः कुन्ती च विप्रश्च सहितावनिलात्मजम् । तमब्रूतां कुरुष्वेति स तथेत्यब्रवीच्च तौ ॥२०॥
tataḥ kuntī ca vipraśca sahitāvanilātmajam। tamabrūtāṁ kuruṣvaiti sa tathētyabravīcca tau ॥20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्तī (kuntī) - Kunti; च (ca) - and; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brahman; च (ca) - and; सहिताव (sahitāva) - together with; अनिलात्मजम् (anilātmajam) - the son of the wind; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रूतां (abrūtāṁ) - said; कुरुष्वेति (kuruṣvaiti) - do it; स (sa) - he; तथेत्यब्रवीत् (tathētyabravīt) - said so; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - both;]
Then, Kunti and the Brahman, together with the son of the wind, said to him, "Do it," and he replied, "So be it," to both.

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
