Vaishampayana said:
करिष्य इति भीमेन प्रतिज्ञाते तु भारत । आजग्मुस्ते ततः सर्वे भैक्षमादाय पाण्डवाः ॥१॥
kariṣya iti bhīmena pratijñāte tu bhārata। ājagmustē tataḥ sarvē bhaiṣkamādāya pāṇḍavāḥ ॥1॥
[करिष्य (kariṣya) - will do; इति (iti) - thus; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; प्रतिज्ञाते (pratijñāte) - having sworn; तु (tu) - but; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - they came; ते (te) - those; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; भैक्षकमादाय (bhaiṣkamādāya) - taking the food; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
Bhima vowed to do this, O Bharata. Then, all the Pandavas came, taking the food from there.
आकारेणैव तं ज्ञात्वा पाण्डुपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः । रहः समुपविश्यैकस्ततः पप्रच्छ मातरम् ॥२॥
ākāreṇaiva taṁ jñātvā pāṇḍuputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। rahaḥ samupaviśyaika-stataḥ papṛccha mātaram ॥2॥
[आकारेणैव (ākāreṇaiva) - knowing the form; तं (taṁ) - him; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; पाण्डुपुत्रो (pāṇḍuputro) - the son of Pandu; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; रहः (rahaḥ) - secretly; समुपविश्य (samupaviśya) - sitting together; एकस्ततः (eka-stataḥ) - alone thereafter; पप्रच्छ (papṛccha) - asked; मातरम् (mātaram) - the mother;]
Having known him by his form, Yudhishthira, the son of Pandu, sat down secretly and then asked the mother.
किं चिकीर्षत्ययं कर्म भीमो भीमपराक्रमः । भवत्यनुमते कच्चिदयं कर्तुमिहेच्छति ॥३॥
kiṁ cikīrṣatyayaṁ karma bhīmo bhīmaparākramḥ। bhavatyanumate kacidayaṁ kartumihecchati ॥3॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; चिकीर्षत्ययं (cikīrṣatyayaṁ) - does he intend to do; कर्म (karma) - action; भीमो (bhīmo) - Bhima; भीमपराक्रमः (bhīmaparākramḥ) - of great strength; भवति (bhavaty) - becomes; अनुमते (anumate) - to agree; कच्चि (kacchi) - perhaps; कर्तुमिहेच्छति (kartumihecchati) - wishes to do it;]
What action does this Bhima, of great strength, wish to do? Does he wish to do it, perhaps, with your consent?
कुंत्युवाच॥

Kunti said:
ममैव वचनादेष करिष्यति परन्तपः । ब्राह्मणार्थे महत्कृत्यं मोष्काय नगरस्य च ॥४॥
mamāyēṣā vacanādēṣa kariṣyati parantapaḥ। brāhmaṇārthē mahatkṛtyaṁ mōṣkāya nagarasya ca ॥4॥
[ममैव (mamāyēṣā) - by my own words; वचनादेष (vacanādēṣa) - of this instruction; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - O scorcher of enemies; ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthē) - for the Brahman’s cause; महत्कृत्यं (mahatkṛtyaṁ) - great deed; मोष्काय (mōṣkāya) - for liberation; नगरस्य (nagarasya) - of the city; च (ca) - and;]
By my own words, the scorcher of enemies will do this great deed, for the Brahman’s cause and for the liberation of the city.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yudhishthira said:
किमिदं साहसं तीक्ष्णं भवत्या दुष्कृतं कृतम् । परित्यागं हि पुत्रस्य न प्रशंसन्ति साधवः ॥५॥
kimidaṁ sāhasaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ bhavatyā duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam। parityāgaṁ hi putrasya na praśaṁsanti sādhavaḥ ॥5॥
[किमिदं (kimidaṁ) - what is this; साहसं (sāhasaṁ) - audacity; तीक्ष्णं (tīkṣṇaṁ) - sharp; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - you; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtaṁ) - evil action; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; परित्यागं (parityāgaṁ) - abandonment; हि (hi) - indeed; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; न (na) - not; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṁsanti) - approve; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - the righteous;]
What is this audacious, sharp action? The righteous do not approve of the abandonment of a son.
कथं परसुतस्यार्थे स्वसुतं त्यक्तुमिच्छसि । लोकवृत्तिविरुद्धं वै पुत्रत्यागात्कृतं त्वया ॥६॥
kathaṁ parasutasya-ārthē svasutaṁ tyaktumicchasi। lokavṛttiviruddhaṁ vai putratyāgāt kṛtaṁ tvayā ॥6॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; परसुतस्यार्थे (parasutasya-ārthē) - for the sake of another's son; स्वसुतं (svasutaṁ) - your own son; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you wish; लोकवृत्तिविरुद्धं (lokavṛttiviruddhaṁ) - in conflict with the worldly way; वै (vai) - indeed; पुत्रत्यागात् (putratyāgāt) - by abandoning a son; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
How can you wish to abandon your own son for the sake of another’s son? This is contrary to worldly behavior, and you have done this by abandoning your son.
यस्य बाहू समाश्रित्य सुखं सर्वे स्वपामहे । राज्यं चापहृतं क्षुद्रैराजिहीर्षामहे पुनः ॥७॥
yasya bāhū samāśritya sukhaṁ sarvē svapāmahe। rājyaṁ cāpahṛtaṁ kṣudrāirājihīrṣāmahe punaḥ ॥7॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; बाहू (bāhū) - the arms; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - depending on; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; स्वपामहे (svapāmahe) - sleep; राज्यं (rājyaṁ) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; अपहृतं (apahṛtaṁ) - stolen; क्षुद्रैः (kṣudraiḥ) - by the small; राजिहीर्षामहे (rājihīrṣāmahe) - we wish to take back the kingdom; पुनः (punah) - again;]
By depending on whose arms, we all find happiness and sleep. But the kingdom, taken by the small ones, we wish to take back again.
यस्य दुर्योधनो वीर्यं चिन्तयन्नमितौजसः । न शेते वसतीः सर्वा दुःखाच्छकुनिना सह ॥८॥
yasya duryodhanō vīryaṁ cintayannamitaujasah। na śētē vasatīḥ sarvā duḥkhācchakunīnā saha ॥8॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; वीर्यं (vīryaṁ) - strength; चिन्तयन्न (cintayann) - thinking; अमितौजसः (amitaujasah) - of immense energy; न (na) - not; शेते (śētē) - sleeps; वसतीः (vasatīḥ) - residences; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; दुःखाच्छकुनिना (duḥkhācchakunīnā) - with the sparrow of misery; सह (saha) - together;]
Thinking of the strength of Duryodhana, whose energy is immense, he does not sleep in his residence, along with the sparrow of misery.
यस्य वीरस्य वीर्येण मुक्ता जतुगृहाद्वयम् । अन्येभ्यश्चैव पापेभ्यो निहतश्च पुरोचनः ॥९॥
yasya vīrasya vīryeṇa muktā jatugṛhādvayam। anyebhyaścaiva pāpebhyo nihataccha purocanaḥ ॥9॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - with strength; मुक्ता (muktā) - freed; जतुगृहाद्वयम् (jatugṛhādvayam) - from the twin ancestral homes; अन्येभ्यः (anyebhyaḥ) - from others; च (ca) - and; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from sins; निहतश्च (nihataccha) - killed; पुरोचनः (purocanaḥ) - the preceptor;]
By the strength of the hero, he freed from the twin ancestral homes, and also killed by others who had committed sins, the preceptor.
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य वसुपूर्णां वसुन्धराम् । इमां मन्यामहे प्राप्तां निहत्य धृतराष्ट्रजान् ॥१०॥
yasya vīryaṁ samāśritya vasupūrṇāṁ vasundharām। imāṁ manyāmahe prāptāṁ nihatyadhṛtarāṣṭrajān ॥10॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; वीर्यं (vīryaṁ) - strength; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - depending on; वसुपूर्णां (vasupūrṇāṁ) - the full earth; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth; इमां (imāṁ) - this; मन्यामहे (manyāmahe) - we consider; प्राप्तां (prāptāṁ) - obtained; निहत्य (nihaty) - having killed; धृतराष्ट्रजान् (dhṛtarāṣṭrajān) - the sons of Dhritarashtra;]
By depending on the strength of the hero, we consider the earth full, obtained after killing the sons of Dhritarashtra.
तस्य व्यवसितस्त्यागो बुद्धिमास्थाय कां त्वया । कच्चिन्न दुःखैर्बुद्धिस्ते विप्लुता गतचेतसः ॥११॥
tasya vyavasitastyāgo buddhimāsthāya kāṁ tvayā। kacchin duḥkhair buddhiste viplutā gatacētasḥ ॥11॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; व्यवसितः (vyavasitaḥ) - resolved; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - renunciation; बुद्धिमास्थाय (buddhimāsthāya) - having taken wisdom; काङ् (kāṁ) - whom; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कच्चि (kacchi) - whether; दुःखैः (duḥkhaiḥ) - with sorrows; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - the mind; विप्लुता (viplutā) - disturbed; गतचेतसः (gatacētasḥ) - with gone mind;]
Having resolved to renounce, having taken wisdom, who has disturbed your mind with sorrow and lost consciousness?
कुन्त्युवाच॥
kuntiyuvāca॥
[कुंती (kuntī) - Kunti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kunti said:
युधिष्ठिर न सन्तापः कार्यः प्रति वृकोदरम् । न चायं बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद्व्यवसायः कृतो मया ॥१२॥
yudhiṣṭhira na santāpaḥ kāryaḥ prati vṛkodaram। na cāyaṁ buddhidaurbalyād vyavasāyaḥ kṛto mayā ॥12॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; न (na) - not; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - sorrow; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; प्रति (prati) - against; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Bhima; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आयं (āyaṁ) - this; बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद (buddhidaurbalyād) - from weakness of mind; व्यवसायः (vyavasāyaḥ) - determination; कृतो (kṛto) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
Yudhishthira, there is no sorrow to be caused to Bhima. Nor has this determination been made by me out of weakness of mind.
इह विप्रस्य भवने वयं पुत्र सुखोषिताः । तस्य प्रतिक्रिया तात मयेयं प्रसमीक्षिता ॥ एतावानेव पुरुषः कृतं यस्मिन्न नश्यति ॥१३॥
iha viprasya bhavane vayaṁ putra sukhōṣitāḥ। tasya pratikriyā tāta mayēyaṁ prasamīkṣitā ॥ etāvānēva puruṣaḥ kṛtaṁ yasmin naśyati ॥13॥
[इह (iha) - here; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the Brahman; भवने (bhavane) - in the house; वयं (vayaṁ) - we; पुत्र (putra) - son; सुखोषिताः (sukhōṣitāḥ) - finding happiness; तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रतिक्रिया (pratikriyā) - response; तात (tāta) - O father; मया (mayā) - by me; एषा (eṣā) - this; प्रसमीक्षिता (prasamīkṣitā) - was considered; एतावान (etāvān) - this much; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; यस्मिन (yasmin) - in which; नश्यति (naśyati) - is destroyed;]
Here, we, the son, have found happiness in the house of the Brahman. His response, O father, was considered by me. Indeed, the work of the man who does not destroy is this much.
दृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्य विक्रान्तं तदा जतुगृहे महत् । हिडिम्बस्य वधाच्चैव विश्वासो मे वृकोदरे ॥१४॥
dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya vikrāntaṁ tadā jatugṛhē mahat। hiḍimbasya vadhāc caiva viśvāsō mē vṛkodarē ॥14॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; विक्रान्तं (vikrāntaṁ) - heroic; तदा (tadā) - then; जतुगृहे (jatugṛhē) - in the ancestral home; महत् (mahat) - great; हिडिम्बस्य (hiḍimbasya) - of Hidimba; वधाच (vadhāc) - after the killing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विश्वासः (viśvāsaḥ) - faith; मे (mē) - my; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Bhima;]
Having seen Bhishma’s heroism in the great ancestral home, and indeed my faith in Bhima after the killing of Hidimba.
बाह्वोर्बलं हि भीमस्य नागायुतसमं महत् । येन यूयं गजप्रख्या निर्व्यूढा वारणावतात् ॥१५॥
bāhvorbalaṁ hi bhīmasya nāgāyutasamaṁ mahat। yena yūyaṁ gajapṛkhyā nirvyūḍhā vāraṇāvatāt ॥15॥
[बाह्वोर्बलं (bāhvorbalaṁ) - the strength of the arms; हि (hi) - indeed; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhima; नागायुतसमं (nāgāyutasamaṁ) - like a thousand elephants; महत् (mahat) - great; येन (yena) - by whom; यूयं (yūyaṁ) - you; गजप्रख्या (gajapṛkhyā) - like elephants; निर्व्यूढा (nirvyūḍhā) - unscattered; वारणावतात् (vāraṇāvatāt) - like elephants marching;]
Indeed, the strength of Bhima’s arms is like that of a thousand elephants, by which you, unscattered, march like elephants.
वृकोदरबलो नान्यो न भूतो न भविष्यति । योऽभ्युदीयाद्युधि श्रेष्ठमपि वज्रधरं स्वयम् ॥१६॥
vṛkodarabalō nānyō na bhūto na bhaviṣyati। yo'bhiyudīyādyudhi śreṣṭhamapi vajradharaṁ svayam ॥16॥
[वृकोदरबलो (vṛkodarabalo) - the strength of Bhima; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyō) - another; न (na) - not; भूतो (bhūto) - has been; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; यो (yo) - who; अभ्युदीयात् (abhyudīyāt) - rises; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; अपि (api) - even; वज्रधरं (vajradharaṁ) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
The strength of Bhima is unmatched; neither has anyone been, nor will anyone be, like him. Who, in battle, surpasses even the wielder of the thunderbolt himself?
जातमात्रः पुरा चैष ममाङ्कात्पतितो गिरौ । शरीरगौरवात्तस्य शिला गात्रैर्विचूर्णिता ॥१७॥
jātamātraḥ purā cāṣa mamāṅkāt patito girau। śarīragauravāt tasya śilā gātrair vicūrṇitā ॥17॥
[जातमात्रः (jātamātraḥ) - as soon as born; पुरा (purā) - earlier; च (ca) - also; एष (eṣa) - this; मम (mama) - my; अङ्कात् (aṅkāt) - from the arms; पतितो (patito) - fell; गिरौ (girau) - in the mountain; शरीरगौरवात् (śarīragauravāt) - due to the heaviness of the body; तस्य (tasya) - of him; शिला (śilā) - the stone; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - by the limbs; विचूर्णिता (vicūrṇitā) - was shattered;]
As soon as he was born, he fell from my arms onto the mountain. Due to the heaviness of his body, the stone was shattered by his limbs.
तदहं प्रज्ञया स्मृत्वा बलं भीमस्य पाण्डव । प्रतीकारं च विप्रस्य ततः कृतवती मतिम् ॥१८॥
tadahṁ prajñayā smṛtvā balaṁ bhīmasya pāṇḍava। pratīkāraṁ ca viprasya tataḥ kṛtavatī matim ॥18॥
[तद (tad) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - with wisdom; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - remembering; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhima; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - the son of Pandu; प्रतीकारं (pratīkāraṁ) - response; च (ca) - and; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the Brahman; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृतवती (kṛtavatī) - did; मतिम (matim) - decision;]
Then, remembering with wisdom the strength of Bhima, the son of Pandu, I made the decision to respond to the Brahman.
नेदं लोभान्न चाज्ञानान्न च मोहाद्विनिश्चितम् । बुद्धिपूर्वं तु धर्मस्य व्यवसायः कृतो मया ॥१९॥
nēdaṁ lōbhān na cājñānān na ca mōhād viniścitam। buddhipūrvaṁ tu dharmasya vyavasāyaḥ kṛto mayā ॥19॥
[न (na) - not; एत (et) - this; लोभान (lōbhān) - out of greed; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अज्ञानान (ājñānān) - out of ignorance; न (na) - not; मोहात् (mōhāt) - out of delusion; विनिश्चितम् (viniścitam) - decided; बुद्धिपूर्वं (buddhipūrvaṁ) - with wisdom; तु (tu) - indeed; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of righteousness; व्यवसायः (vyavasāyaḥ) - decision; कृतो (kṛto) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
This decision was not made out of greed, ignorance, or delusion. It was made with wisdom, for righteousness.
अर्थौ द्वावपि निष्पन्नौ युधिष्ठिर भविष्यतः । प्रतीकारश्च वासस्य धर्मश्च चरितो महान् ॥२०॥
arthau dvāvapi niṣpannau yudhiṣṭhira bhaviṣyataḥ। pratīkāraśca vāsasya dharmaśca carito mahān ॥20॥
[अर्थौ (arthau) - wealth; द्वावपि (dvāvapi) - both; निष्पन्नौ (niṣpannau) - completed; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - will happen; प्रतीकारश्च (pratīkāraśca) - response; वासस्य (vāsasya) - of Vasu; धर्मश्च (dharmashcha) - and righteousness; चरितो (carito) - conduct; महान् (mahān) - great;]
Both wealth and righteousness will be accomplished, and the response of Vasu and the conduct of righteousness will be great.
यो ब्राह्मणस्य साहाय्यं कुर्यादर्थेषु कर्हिचित् । क्षत्रियः स शुभाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयादिति मे श्रुतम् ॥२१॥
yo brāhmaṇasya sāhāyyaṁ kuryādartheṣu karhicit। kṣatriyaḥ sa śubhāṁllokān prāpnuyād iti me śrutam ॥21॥
[यो (yo) - who; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahman; साहाय्यं (sāhāyyaṁ) - help; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; अर्थेषु (artheṣu) - in matters; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - the Kshatriya; स (sa) - he; शुभाँल्लोकान् (śubhāṁllokān) - auspicious worlds; प्राप्नुयाद् (prāpnuyād) - would attain; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - hearing;]
Whoever helps a Brahman in his needs, the Kshatriya will attain auspicious worlds, as I have heard.
क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियस्यैव कुर्वाणो वधमोक्षणम् । विपुलां कीर्तिमाप्नोति लोकेऽस्मिंश्च परत्र च ॥२२॥
kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyasyaiva kurvāṇo vadhamokṣaṇam। vipulāṁ kīrtimāpnōti lōkē'smiṁśca paratra ca ॥22॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - the Kshatriya; क्षत्रियस्यैव (kṣatriyasyaiva) - indeed of the Kshatriya; कुर्वाणो (kurvāṇo) - performing; वधमोक्षणम् (vadhamokṣaṇam) - killing and liberation; विपुलां (vipulāṁ) - vast; कीर्तिमाप्नोति (kīrtimāpnōti) - attains fame; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; अस्मिंश्च (asmiṁśca) - here and also; परत्र (paratra) - elsewhere; च (ca) - and;]
The Kshatriya, by performing the killing and liberation of others, attains vast fame, both in this world and in the next.
वैश्यस्यैव तु साहाय्यं कुर्वाणः क्षत्रियो युधि । स सर्वेष्वपि लोकेषु प्रजा रञ्जयते ध्रुवम् ॥२३॥
vaiśyasyāiva tu sāhāyyaṁ kurvāṇaḥ kṣatriyo yudhi। sa sarveṣvapi lōkēṣu prajā rañjayatē dhruvam ॥23॥
[वैश्यस्यैव (vaiśyasyāiva) - indeed of the Vaishya; तु (tu) - but; साहाय्यं (sāhāyyaṁ) - help; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - the Kshatriya; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; स (sa) - he; सर्वेष्वपि (sarveṣvapi) - in all; लोकेषु (lōkēṣu) - in worlds; प्रजा (prajā) - people; रञ्जयते (rañjayatē) - pleases; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - indeed;]
Indeed, the Kshatriya, by aiding the Vaishya in battle, pleases all people in the worlds, undoubtedly.
शूद्रं तु मोक्षयन्राजा शरणार्थिनमागतम् । प्राप्नोतीह कुले जन्म सद्रव्ये राजसत्कृते ॥२४॥
śūdraṁ tu mokṣayan rājā śaraṇārthinam āgatam। prāpnōtīha kulē janma sadravye rājasatkṛtē ॥24॥
[शूद्रं (śūdraṁ) - the Shudra; तु (tu) - indeed; मोक्षयन (mokṣayan) - liberates; राजा (rājā) - the king; शरणार्थिनं (śaraṇārthinam) - the one seeking refuge; आगतम् (āgatam) - having come; प्राप्नोति (prāpnōti) - attains; इह (iha) - here; कुले (kulē) - in the family; जन्म (janma) - birth; सद्रव्ये (sadravye) - with noble wealth; राजसत्कृते (rājasatkṛtē) - being honored by the king;]
The king, indeed, liberates the Shudra who comes seeking refuge, and attains a noble birth in the family, honored by the king.
एवं स भगवान्व्यासः पुरा कौरवनन्दन । प्रोवाच सुतरां प्राज्ञस्तस्मादेतच्चिकीर्षितम् ॥२५॥
evaṁ sa bhagavān vyāsaḥ purā kauravanandana। prōvāca sutarāṁ prājñasta smād etac cikīrṣitam ॥25॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyasa; पुरा (purā) - earlier; कौरवनन्दन (kauravanandana) - O son of Kuru; प्रोवाच (prōvāca) - said; सुतरां (sutarāṁ) - in greater detail; प्राज्ञः (prājñah) - the wise; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतत् (etat) - this; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended;]
Thus, the blessed Vyasa, the son of Kuru, said in greater detail, "Therefore, this was intended."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yudhishthira said:
उपपन्नमिदं मातस्त्वया यद्बुद्धिपूर्वकम् । आर्तस्य ब्राह्मणस्यैवमनुक्रोशादिदं कृतम् ॥ ध्रुवमेष्यति भीमोऽयं निहत्य पुरुषादकम् ॥२६॥
upapannam idaṁ mātastvayā yad buddhipūrvakam। ārtsasya brāhmaṇasyaivam anukrośād idaṁ kṛtam॥ dhruvam eṣyati bhīmo'yaṁ nihaty puruṣādakam॥26॥
[उपपन्नम् (upapannam) - fitting; इदं (idaṁ) - this; मातरः (mātā) - mother; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; यद् (yad) - as; बुद्धिपूर्वकं (buddhipūrvakam) - with wisdom; आर्तस्य (ārtsasya) - of the suffering; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahman; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुक्रोशाद (anukrośād) - out of compassion; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - surely; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will go; भीमो (bhīmo) - Bhima; अयं (ayaṁ) - this; निहत्य (nihaty) - having killed; पुरुषादकम् (puruṣādakam) - the enemy of men;]
This is indeed fitting, O mother, done out of compassion for the suffering Brahman, with wisdom. Surely, Bhima will go, having killed the enemy of men.
यथा त्विदं न विन्देयुर्नरा नगरवासिनः । तथायं ब्राह्मणो वाच्यः परिग्राह्यश्च यत्नतः ॥२७॥
yathā tvidaṁ na vindēyuḥ narā nagaravāsinaḥ। tathāyaṁ brāhmaṇō vācyah parigrāhyaśca yatnataḥ॥27॥
[यथा (yathā) - how; त्विदं (tvidaṁ) - this; न (na) - not; विन्देयुः (vindēyuḥ) - should be found; नराः (narāḥ) - men; नगरवासिनः (nagaravāsinaḥ) - of city-dwellers; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अयं (ayaṁ) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahman; वाच्यः (vācyah) - should be said; परिग्राह्यः (parigrāhyaḥ) - should be accepted; यत्नतः (yatnataḥ) - carefully;]
As city-dwellers should not find this, so this Brahman should be carefully spoken to and accepted.
