Vaishampayana said:
ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामन्नमादाय पाण्डवः । भीमसेनो ययौ तत्र यत्रासौ पुरुषादकः ॥१॥
tato rātryāṁ vyatītāyām annamādāya pāṇḍavaḥ। bhīmasēno yayau tatra yatrāsau puruṣādakaḥ ॥1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रात्र्यां (rātryāṁ) - in the night; व्यतीतायाम् (vyatītāyām) - having passed; अन्नमादाय (annamādāya) - taking food; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; भीमसेनः (bhīmasēnaḥ) - Bhima’s army; ययौ (yayau) - went; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; आसौ (āsau) - he; पुरुषादकः (puruṣādakaḥ) - the enemy of men;]
Then, the Pandava, having passed the night and taken food, went to the place where the enemy of men was.
आसाद्य तु वनं तस्य रक्षसः पाण्डवो बली । आजुहाव ततो नाम्ना तदन्नमुपयोजयन् ॥२॥
āsādya tu vanaṁ tasya rakṣasaḥ pāṇḍavo balī। ājuhāva tato nāmnā tadannam upayojayan ॥2॥

Having approached the forest, the powerful Pandava called the demon and prepared the food by name.
ततः स राक्षसः श्रुत्वा भीमसेनस्य तद्वचः । आजगाम सुसङ्क्रुद्धो यत्र भीमो व्यवस्थितः ॥३॥
tataḥ sa rākṣasaḥ śrutvā bhīmasēnasya tadvacah। ājagāma susaṅkruddho yatra bhīmo vyavasthitaḥ ॥3॥

Hearing the words of Bhima’s army, the demon came, very angry, to the place where Bhima was standing.
महाकायो महावेगो दारयन्निव मेदिनीम् । त्रिशिखां भृकुटिं कृत्वा संदश्य दशनच्छदम् ॥४॥
mahākāyō mahāvēgō dārayanniva mēdīnīm। triśikhāṁ bhṛkuṭiṁ kṛtvā sandaśya daśanacchadam ॥4॥
[महाकायः (mahākāyaḥ) - of great body; महावेगः (mahāvēgaḥ) - of great speed; दारयन् (dārayan) - tearing apart; इव (iva) - as if; मेदिनीम् (mēdīnīm) - the earth; त्रिशिखां (triśikhāṁ) - with three heads; भृकुटिं (bhṛkuṭiṁ) - with frowning; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - making; संदश्य (sandaśya) - grinding; दशनच्छदम् (daśanacchadam) - with the mouth of teeth;]
With his great body and great speed, tearing apart the earth, making three heads, frowning, and grinding with his teeth.
भुञ्जानमन्नं तं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनं स राक्षसः । विवृत्य नयने क्रुद्ध इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
bhujānaman naṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasēnaṁ sa rākṣasaḥ। vivṛtya nayane kruddha idaṁ vacanam abravīt ॥5॥
[भुञ्जानमन्नं (bhujānaman naṁ) - seeing him eating the food; तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीमसेनं (bhīmasēnaṁ) - Bhima’s army; स (sa) - he; राक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - the demon; विवृत्य (vivṛtya) - opening; नयने (nayane) - his eyes; क्रुद्ध (kruddha) - angry; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
Seeing him eating the food, the demon, angry, opened his eyes and said this speech.
कोऽयमन्नमिदं भुङ्क्ते मदर्थमुपकल्पितम् । पश्यतो मम दुर्बुद्धिर्यियासुर्यमसादनम् ॥६॥
ko'yam annam idaṁ bhuṅktē madartham upakalpitaṁ। paśyato mama durbuddhiryiyāsuryam asādhanam ॥6॥
[कोऽयम् (ko'yam) - who is this; अन्नं (annam) - food; इदं (idaṁ) - this; भुङ्क्ते (bhujñkte) - eats; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my cause; उपकल्पितम् (upakalpitaṁ) - prepared; पश्य (paśya) - seeing; मम (mama) - my; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - foolishness; यियासुर्यम (yiyāsuryam) - desiring the sun; असादनम् (asādhanam) - unattainable;]
Who is this eating food prepared for my cause? Seeing this, my foolishness desires the unattainable sun.
भीमसेनस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रहसन्निव भारत । राक्षसं तमनादृत्य भुङ्क्त एव पराङ्मुखः ॥७॥
bhīmasēnastu tacchrutvā prahasan niva bhārata। rākṣasaṁ tamanādṛtya bhuṅktēva parāṅmukhaḥ ॥7॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasēnaḥ) - Bhima’s army; तु (tu) - indeed; तच्छ्रुत्वा (tacchrutvā) - hearing that; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - laughing; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṁ) - the demon; तमनादृत्य (tamanādṛtya) - disregarding him; भुङ्क्ते (bhujñkte) - eats; एव (eva) - indeed; पराङ्मुखः (parāṅmukhaḥ) - with his back turned;]
Hearing that, Bhima’s army, laughing, disregarded the demon and ate the food, turning his back.
ततः स भैरवं कृत्वा समुद्यम्य करावुभौ । अभ्यद्रवद्भीमसेनं जिघांसुः पुरुषादकः ॥८॥
tataḥ sa bhairavaṁ kṛtvā samudyamya karāvubhau। abhyadravadbīmasēnaṁ jijhāṁsuḥ puruṣādakaḥ ॥8॥

Then, making a fearful gesture, the demon raised both hands, rushing towards Bhima’s army, desiring to kill him.
तथापि परिभूयैनं नेक्षमाणो वृकोदरः । राक्षसं भुङ्क्त एवान्नं पाण्डवः परवीरहा ॥९॥
tathāpi paribhūyaianaṁ nēkṣamāṇo vṛkodaraḥ। rākṣasaṁ bhuṅktēvā annam pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā ॥9॥
[तथापि (tathāpi) - still; परिभूय (paribhūya) - having defeated; एयनं (ēyanam) - him; नेक्षमाणो (nēkṣamāṇo) - not looking; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Bhima; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṁ) - the demon; भुङ्क्ते (bhujñkte) - eats; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्नं (annam) - food; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - the killer of enemies;]
Still, Bhima, having defeated him and not looking back, eats the food, the Pandava, the killer of enemies.
अमर्षेण तु सम्पूर्णः कुन्तीपुत्रस्य राक्षसः । जघान पृष्ठं पाणिभ्यामुभाभ्यां पृष्ठतः स्थितः ॥१०॥
amarṣeṇa tu sampūrṇaḥ kuntīputrasya rākṣasaḥ। jaghāna pṛṣṭhaṁ pāṇibhhyāṁ ubhābhyāṁ pṛṣṭataḥ sthitaḥ ॥10॥
[अमर्षेण (amarṣeṇa) - with anger; तु (tu) - indeed; सम्पूर्णः (sampūrṇaḥ) - filled; कुन्तीपुत्रस्य (kuntīputrasya) - of the son of Kunti; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; पृष्ठं (pṛṣṭhaṁ) - the back; पाणिभ्याम् (pāṇibhhyām) - with both hands; उभाभ्यां (ubhābhyāṁ) - both; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭataḥ) - from the back; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
Filled with anger, the demon of Kunti’s son struck the back with both hands while standing behind.
तथा बलवता भीमः पाणिभ्यां भृशमाहतः । नैवावलोकयामास राक्षसं भुङ्क्त एव सः ॥११॥
tathā balavatā bhīmaḥ pāṇibhyāṁ bhṛśamāhataḥ। naivāvalōkayamāsa rākṣasaṁ bhuṅkta eva saḥ ॥11॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; बलवता (balavatā) - with great strength; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyāṁ) - with both hands; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - severely; आहतः (āhataḥ) - struck; नैव (naiva) - not; अवलोकयामास (avalōkayamāsa) - he looked; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṁ) - the demon; भुङ्क्त (bhuṅkta) - ate; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
Thus, Bhima, with great strength, was struck severely with both hands. He did not look at the demon but continued eating.
ततः स भूयः सङ्क्रुद्धो वृक्षमादाय राक्षसः । ताडयिष्यंस्तदा भीमं पुनरभ्यद्रवद्बली ॥१२॥
tataḥ sa bhūyaḥ saṅkruddho vṛkṣamādāya rākṣasaḥ। tāḍayiṣyāṁstadā bhīmaṁ punar abhyadravad balī ॥12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddho) - angry; वृक्षमादाय (vṛkṣamādāya) - taking the tree; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; ताडयिष्याम् (tāḍayiṣyām) - will strike; तदा (tadā) - then; भीमं (bhīmaṁ) - Bhima; पुनः (punah) - again; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed towards; बली (balī) - powerful;]
Then, the demon, again angry, took the tree and was about to strike Bhima, rushing towards him once more, with great strength.
ततो भीमः शनैर्भुक्त्वा तदन्नं पुरुषर्षभः । वार्युपस्पृश्य संहृष्टस्तस्थौ युधि महाबलः ॥१३॥
tato bhīmaḥ śanair bhuktvā tadannaṁ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। vāryupaspṛśya saṁhṛṣṭaḥ stāṣṭau yudhi mahābalaḥ ॥13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; तदन्नं (tadannaṁ) - that food; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - the best of men; वार्युपस्पृश्य (vāryupaspṛśya) - touching the water; संहृष्टः (saṁhṛṣṭaḥ) - happy; स्थासितु (sthāṣṭau) - stood still; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one;]
Then, Bhima, after eating the food slowly, the best of men, having touched the water, stood still, happy in battle, with great strength.
क्षिप्तं क्रुद्धेन तं वृक्षं प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान् । सव्येन पाणिना भीमः प्रहसन्निव भारत ॥१४॥
kṣiptaṁ kruddhēna taṁ vṛkṣaṁ pratijagrāha vīryavān। savyēna pāṇinā bhīmaḥ prahasan niva bhārata ॥14॥
[क्षिप्तं (kṣiptaṁ) - thrown; क्रुद्धेन (kruddhēna) - by the angry; तं (taṁ) - him; वृक्षं (vṛkṣaṁ) - tree; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - caught; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - with great strength; सव्येन (savyēna) - with his left hand; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with the hand; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - smiling; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
The tree, thrown by the angry demon, was caught by the mighty Bhima with his left hand, smiling, O Bharata.
ततः स पुनरुद्यम्य वृक्षान्बहुविधान्बली । प्राहिणोद्भीमसेनाय तस्मै भीमश्च पाण्डवः ॥१५॥
tataḥ sa punarudyamya vṛkṣān bahuvidhān balī। prāhiṇōd bhīmasēnāya tasmai bhīmaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पुनः (punah) - again; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - lifting; वृक्षान् (vṛkṣān) - trees; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - many kinds; बली (balī) - powerful; प्राहिणोद् (prāhiṇōd) - threw; भीमसेनाय (bhīmasēnāya) - to Bhima’s army; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; भीमश्च (bhīmaśca) - Bhima also; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava;]
Then, the powerful demon, lifting many trees, threw them to Bhima’s army, and to Bhima, the Pandava.
तद्वृक्षयुद्धमभवन्महीरुहविनाशनम् । घोररूपं महाराज बकपाण्डवयोर्महत् ॥१६॥
tadvṛkṣayuddham abhavann mahīruhavināśanam। ghorarūpaṁ mahārāja bakapāṇḍavayōr mahat ॥16॥

That tree battle became a destruction of mighty trees, a horrible form, O great king, between Bhima and the Pandava.
नाम विश्राव्य तु बकः समभिद्रुत्य पाण्डवम् । भुजाभ्यां परिजग्राह भीमसेनं महाबलम् ॥१७॥
nāma viśrāvya tu bakaḥ samabhidrutya pāṇḍavam। bhujābhyāṁ parijagrāha bhīmasēnaṁ mahābalam ॥17॥

Calling out by name, the demon rushed towards the Pandava, seizing Bhima’s mighty army with both arms.
भीमसेनोऽपि तद्रक्षः परिरभ्य महाभुजः । विस्फुरन्तं महावेगं विचकर्ष बलाद्बली ॥१८॥
bhīmasēnō'pi tadrakṣaḥ parirabhya mahābhujaḥ। visphurantam mahāvēgaṁ vicakarṣa balādbalī ॥18॥

Even Bhima’s army, embracing the demon with mighty arms, was dragged by him with great speed, sparking with strength.
स कृष्यमाणो भीमेन कर्षमाणश्च पाण्डवम् । समयुज्यत तीव्रेण श्रमेण पुरुषादकः ॥१९॥
sa kṛṣyamāṇo bhīmena karṣamāṇaśca pāṇḍavam। samayujyata tīvrēṇa śramēṇa puruṣādakaḥ ॥19॥

The demon, being dragged by Bhima and pulled by the Pandava, joined with intense effort in the battle of strength.
तयोर्वेगेन महता पृथिवी समकम्पत । पादपांश्च महाकायांश्चूर्णयामासतुस्तदा ॥२०॥
tayōr vēgēna mahatā pṛthivī samakampat। pādāpāṁśca mahākāyāṁścaūrṇayāmāsa tuḥstada॥20॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them; वेगेन (vēgēna) - with speed; महता (mahatā) - great; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; समकम्पत (samakampat) - trembled; पादपांश्च (pādapāṁśca) - trees and; महाकायांश्च (mahākāyāṁśca) - mighty bodies; चूर्णयामास (cūrṇayāmāsa) - were shattered; तु (tu) - then; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
With their great speed, the earth trembled. The mighty trees and bodies were shattered at that time.
हीयमानं तु तद्रक्षः समीक्ष्य भरतर्षभ । निष्पिष्य भूमौ पाणिभ्यां समाजघ्ने वृकोदरः ॥२१॥
hīyamānaṁ tu tadrakṣaḥ samīkṣya bharatarṣabha। niṣpiṣya bhūmau pāṇibhāṁ samājaghne vṛkodaraḥ ॥21॥
[हीयमानं (hīyamānaṁ) - being destroyed; तु (tu) - indeed; तद्रक्षः (tadrakṣaḥ) - that demon; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - seeing; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O Bharata, the best of the Bharatas; निष्पिष्य (niṣpiṣya) - squeezing out; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhāṁ) - with both hands; समाजघ्ने (samājaghne) - he killed; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Bhima;]
Seeing the demon being destroyed, O Bharata, Bhima squeezed him on the ground with both hands and killed him.
ततोऽस्य जानुना पृष्ठमवपीड्य बलादिव । बाहुना परिजग्राह दक्षिणेन शिरोधराम् ॥२२॥
tato'sya jānunā pṛṣṭham avapīḍya balād iva। bāhunā parijagrāha dakṣiṇēna śirodhārām ॥22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - of him; जानुना (jānunā) - with the knee; पृष्ठम (pṛṣṭham) - the back; अवपीड्य (avapīḍya) - pressing; बलात् (balāt) - with force; इव (iva) - as if; बाहुना (bāhunā) - with his arm; परिजग्राह (parijagrāha) - he seized; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇēna) - with the right; शिरोधराम् (śirodhārām) - the head and neck;]
Then, pressing his back with the knee, Bhima, with his arm, seized the demon’s head and neck with his right arm.
सव्येन च कटीदेशे गृह्य वाससि पाण्डवः । तद्रक्षो द्विगुणं चक्रे नदन्तं भैरवान्रवान् ॥२३॥
savyēna ca kaṭī dēśē gṛhya vāsasi pāṇḍavaḥ। tadrakṣō dviguṇaṁ cakrē nadantaṁ bhairavān ravān ॥23॥

With his left hand, Bhima grasped the waist and, roaring, spun the demon doubly, fiercely howling.
ततोऽस्य रुधिरं वक्त्रात्प्रादुरासीद्विशां पते । भज्यमानस्य भीमेन तस्य घोरस्य रक्षसः ॥२४॥
tato'sya rudhiraṁ vaktrāt prādurāsīdvishāṁ pate। bhajyamānasya bhīmena tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ ॥24॥

Then, blood appeared from his mouth, O lord of the worlds, as Bhima devoured him, the fierce demon.
