Core:Bhima splits Baka into two.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaishampayana said:
tato rātryāṁ vyatītāyām annamādāya pāṇḍavaḥ। bhīmasēno yayau tatra yatrāsau puruṣādakaḥ ॥1॥
Then, the Pandava, having passed the night and taken food, went to the place where the enemy of men was.
āsādya tu vanaṁ tasya rakṣasaḥ pāṇḍavo balī। ājuhāva tato nāmnā tadannam upayojayan ॥2॥
Having approached the forest, the powerful Pandava called the demon and prepared the food by name.
tataḥ sa rākṣasaḥ śrutvā bhīmasēnasya tadvacah। ājagāma susaṅkruddho yatra bhīmo vyavasthitaḥ ॥3॥
Hearing the words of Bhima’s army, the demon came, very angry, to the place where Bhima was standing.
mahākāyō mahāvēgō dārayanniva mēdīnīm। triśikhāṁ bhṛkuṭiṁ kṛtvā sandaśya daśanacchadam ॥4॥
With his great body and great speed, tearing apart the earth, making three heads, frowning, and grinding with his teeth.
bhujānaman naṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasēnaṁ sa rākṣasaḥ। vivṛtya nayane kruddha idaṁ vacanam abravīt ॥5॥
Seeing him eating the food, the demon, angry, opened his eyes and said this speech.
ko'yam annam idaṁ bhuṅktē madartham upakalpitaṁ। paśyato mama durbuddhiryiyāsuryam asādhanam ॥6॥
Who is this eating food prepared for my cause? Seeing this, my foolishness desires the unattainable sun.
bhīmasēnastu tacchrutvā prahasan niva bhārata। rākṣasaṁ tamanādṛtya bhuṅktēva parāṅmukhaḥ ॥7॥
Hearing that, Bhima’s army, laughing, disregarded the demon and ate the food, turning his back.
tataḥ sa bhairavaṁ kṛtvā samudyamya karāvubhau। abhyadravadbīmasēnaṁ jijhāṁsuḥ puruṣādakaḥ ॥8॥
Then, making a fearful gesture, the demon raised both hands, rushing towards Bhima’s army, desiring to kill him.
tathāpi paribhūyaianaṁ nēkṣamāṇo vṛkodaraḥ। rākṣasaṁ bhuṅktēvā annam pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā ॥9॥
Still, Bhima, having defeated him and not looking back, eats the food, the Pandava, the killer of enemies.
amarṣeṇa tu sampūrṇaḥ kuntīputrasya rākṣasaḥ। jaghāna pṛṣṭhaṁ pāṇibhhyāṁ ubhābhyāṁ pṛṣṭataḥ sthitaḥ ॥10॥
Filled with anger, the demon of Kunti’s son struck the back with both hands while standing behind.
tathā balavatā bhīmaḥ pāṇibhyāṁ bhṛśamāhataḥ। naivāvalōkayamāsa rākṣasaṁ bhuṅkta eva saḥ ॥11॥
Thus, Bhima, with great strength, was struck severely with both hands. He did not look at the demon but continued eating.
tataḥ sa bhūyaḥ saṅkruddho vṛkṣamādāya rākṣasaḥ। tāḍayiṣyāṁstadā bhīmaṁ punar abhyadravad balī ॥12॥
Then, the demon, again angry, took the tree and was about to strike Bhima, rushing towards him once more, with great strength.
tato bhīmaḥ śanair bhuktvā tadannaṁ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। vāryupaspṛśya saṁhṛṣṭaḥ stāṣṭau yudhi mahābalaḥ ॥13॥
Then, Bhima, after eating the food slowly, the best of men, having touched the water, stood still, happy in battle, with great strength.
kṣiptaṁ kruddhēna taṁ vṛkṣaṁ pratijagrāha vīryavān। savyēna pāṇinā bhīmaḥ prahasan niva bhārata ॥14॥
The tree, thrown by the angry demon, was caught by the mighty Bhima with his left hand, smiling, O Bharata.
tataḥ sa punarudyamya vṛkṣān bahuvidhān balī। prāhiṇōd bhīmasēnāya tasmai bhīmaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15॥
Then, the powerful demon, lifting many trees, threw them to Bhima’s army, and to Bhima, the Pandava.
tadvṛkṣayuddham abhavann mahīruhavināśanam। ghorarūpaṁ mahārāja bakapāṇḍavayōr mahat ॥16॥
That tree battle became a destruction of mighty trees, a horrible form, O great king, between Bhima and the Pandava.
nāma viśrāvya tu bakaḥ samabhidrutya pāṇḍavam। bhujābhyāṁ parijagrāha bhīmasēnaṁ mahābalam ॥17॥
Calling out by name, the demon rushed towards the Pandava, seizing Bhima’s mighty army with both arms.
bhīmasēnō'pi tadrakṣaḥ parirabhya mahābhujaḥ। visphurantam mahāvēgaṁ vicakarṣa balādbalī ॥18॥
Even Bhima’s army, embracing the demon with mighty arms, was dragged by him with great speed, sparking with strength.
sa kṛṣyamāṇo bhīmena karṣamāṇaśca pāṇḍavam। samayujyata tīvrēṇa śramēṇa puruṣādakaḥ ॥19॥
The demon, being dragged by Bhima and pulled by the Pandava, joined with intense effort in the battle of strength.
tayōr vēgēna mahatā pṛthivī samakampat। pādāpāṁśca mahākāyāṁścaūrṇayāmāsa tuḥstada॥20॥
With their great speed, the earth trembled. The mighty trees and bodies were shattered at that time.
hīyamānaṁ tu tadrakṣaḥ samīkṣya bharatarṣabha। niṣpiṣya bhūmau pāṇibhāṁ samājaghne vṛkodaraḥ ॥21॥
Seeing the demon being destroyed, O Bharata, Bhima squeezed him on the ground with both hands and killed him.
tato'sya jānunā pṛṣṭham avapīḍya balād iva। bāhunā parijagrāha dakṣiṇēna śirodhārām ॥22॥
Then, pressing his back with the knee, Bhima, with his arm, seized the demon’s head and neck with his right arm.
savyēna ca kaṭī dēśē gṛhya vāsasi pāṇḍavaḥ। tadrakṣō dviguṇaṁ cakrē nadantaṁ bhairavān ravān ॥23॥
With his left hand, Bhima grasped the waist and, roaring, spun the demon doubly, fiercely howling.
tato'sya rudhiraṁ vaktrāt prādurāsīdvishāṁ pate। bhajyamānasya bhīmena tasya ghorasya rakṣasaḥ ॥24॥
Then, blood appeared from his mouth, O lord of the worlds, as Bhima devoured him, the fierce demon.
