तस्याथ कामधुग्धेनुर्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः। उक्ता कामान्प्रयच्छेति सा कामान्दुदुहे ततः ॥१-१६५-९॥
tasyātha kāmadhugdhenur vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ। uktā kāmān prayaccheti sā kāmān duduhe tataḥ॥1-165-9॥

ग्राम्यारण्या ओषधीश्च दुदुहे पय एव च। षड्रसं चामृतरसं रसायनमनुत्तमम् ॥१-१६५-१०॥
grāmyāraṇyā oṣadhīś ca duduhe paya eva ca। ṣaḍrasaṃ cāmṛtarasaṃ rasāyanam anuttamam ॥1-165-10॥

भोजनीयानि पेयानि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च। लेह्यान्यमृतकल्पानि चोष्याणि च तथार्जुन ॥१-१६५-११॥

तैः कामैः सर्वसम्पूर्णैः पूजितः स महीपतिः। सामात्यः सबलश्चैव तुतोष स भृशं नृपः ॥१-१६५-१२॥
taiḥ kāmaiḥ sarvasampūrṇaiḥ pūjitaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ। sāmātyaḥ sabalaścaiva tutoṣa sa bhṛśaṃ nṛpaḥ ॥1-165-12॥

षडायतां सुपार्श्वोरुं त्रिपृथुं पञ्च संवृताम्। मण्डूकनेत्रां स्वाकारां पीनोधसमनिन्दिताम् ॥१-१६५-१३॥
ṣaḍāyatāṃ supārśvoruṃ tripṛthuṃ pañca saṃvṛtām। maṇḍūkanetrāṃ svākārāṃ pīnodhasamaninditām ॥1-165-13॥

सुवालधिं शङ्कुकर्णां चारुशृङ्गां मनोरमाम्। पुष्टायतशिरोग्रीवां विस्मितः सोऽभिवीक्ष्य ताम् ॥१-१६५-१४॥
suvāladhiṃ śaṅkukarṇāṃ cāruśṛṅgāṃ manoramām। puṣṭāyataśirogrīvāṃ vismitaḥ so'bhivīkṣya tām ॥1-165-14॥

अर्बुदेन गवां ब्रह्मन्मम राज्येन वा पुनः। नन्दिनीं सम्प्रयच्छस्व भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं महामुने ॥१-१६५-१६॥
arbudeṇa gavāṃ brahman mama rājyena vā punaḥ। nandinīṃ samprayacchasva bhuṅkṣva rājyaṃ mahāmune ॥1-165-16॥

devatātithipitṛarthamājyārthaṃ ca payasvinī। adeyā nandinīyaṃ me rājyenāpi tavānagha ॥1-165-17॥

क्षत्रियोऽहं भवान्विप्रस्तपःस्वाध्यायसाधनः। ब्राह्मणेषु कुतो वीर्यं प्रशान्तेषु धृतात्मसु ॥१-१६५-१८॥
kṣatriyo'ham bhavān vipra tapaḥsvādhyāyasādhanaḥ। brāhmaṇeṣu kuto vīryaṃ praśānteṣu dhṛtātmasu ॥1-165-18॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - member of the warrior class; अहम् (aham) - I; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; तपः-स्वाध्याय-साधनः (tapaḥ-svādhyāya-sādhanaḥ) - engaged in austerity and study of the Vedas; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among brāhmaṇas; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; प्रशान्तेषु (praśānteṣu) - in those who are tranquil; धृतात्मसु (dhṛtātmasu) - in those with controlled self;]

I am a kṣatriya, and you are a brāhmaṇa devoted to austerity and study. Among brāhmaṇas who are peaceful and self-controlled, where is the question of strength?
अर्बुदेन गवां यस्त्वं न ददासि ममेप्सिताम्। स्वधर्मं न प्रहास्यामि नयिष्ये ते बलेन गाम् ॥१-१६५-१९॥
arbudeṇa gavāṃ yastvaṃ na dadāsi mamepsitām। svadharmaṃ na prahāsyāmi nayiṣye te balena gām ॥1-165-19॥

(By Arbudas (ten millions) of cows, who you do not give my desired (one). I shall not abandon my own duty. I shall lead your cow by force.)
Even though you do not give me my desired cow among the ten million cows, I will not abandon my own duty; I will take your cow by force.

बलस्थश्चासि राजा च बाहुवीर्यश्च क्षत्रियः। यथेच्छसि तथा क्षिप्रं कुरु त्वं मा विचारय ॥१-१६५-२०॥

(Standing in strength and you are king and of arm strength and Kṣatriya; as you wish so quickly do you; do not deliberate.)
You are strong, a king, powerful in your arms, and a Kṣatriya; therefore, do quickly as you wish—do not hesitate or deliberate.

(Thus having been spoken, then, O son of Pṛthā, Viśvāmitra, as if by force, seized Nandinī, the cow resembling a swan and the moon, her.)
O Pārtha, when thus addressed, Viśvāmitra forcibly seized Nandinī, the cow, who was as radiant as a swan and the moon.
कशादण्डप्रतिहता काल्यमाना ततस्ततः। हम्भायमाना कल्याणी वसिष्ठस्याथ नन्दिनी ॥१-१६५-२२॥

Nandinī, the auspicious cow of Vasiṣṭha, was struck with whips and sticks, driven here and there, and bellowed loudly.
आगम्याभिमुखी पार्थ तस्थौ भगवदुन्मुखी। भृशं च ताड्यमानापि न जगामाश्रमात्ततः ॥१-१६५-२३॥
āgamyābhimukhī pārtha tasthau bhagavadunmukhī। bhṛśaṃ ca tāḍyamānāpi na jagāmāśramāttataḥ ॥1-165-23॥

(Having approached, facing toward, O son of Pṛthā, she stood turned toward the Lord. Even though being struck intensely and, she did not depart from the hermitage from there.)
O Pārtha, having come and facing forward, she stood turned toward the Lord. Though she was struck intensely, she did not leave the hermitage from there.

(Thus, in her, then, O Partha, when violated, the great sage was not agitated, nor from steadfastness and did not waver, firm in vow.)

kṣatriyāṇāṃ balaṃ tejo brāhmaṇānāṃ kṣamā balam। kṣamā māṃ bhajate tasmādgamyatāṃ yadi rocate ॥1-165-28॥

(Of the kṣatriyas, strength is energy; of the brāhmaṇas, forbearance is strength. Forbearance embraces me; therefore, let it be gone if it pleases.)
For kṣatriyas, strength is their energy; for brāhmaṇas, forbearance is their strength. Forbearance is with me; therefore, let it be left if you wish.

(What indeed, am I abandoned, O revered one, that thus you speak to me? Not abandoned am I by you, O Brahman; not possible to be led by force.)
"Am I truly abandoned, O revered one, that you speak to me in this way? I am not abandoned by you, O Brahman; I cannot be taken away by force."

na tvāṃ tyajāmi kalyāṇi sthīyatāṃ yadi śakyate। dṛḍhena dāmnā baddhvaiṣa vatsaste hriyate balāt ॥1-165-30॥

(Not you I abandon, O auspicious one; let (you) stay if it is possible. By strong rope having bound, this calf of yours is being taken away by force.)
O auspicious one, I am not abandoning you; stay here if you can. Your calf is being taken away by force, having been bound with a strong rope.

Hearing the command, "Let her stand," the cow of Vasiṣṭha, with her head and neck raised high, appeared, looking fearsome.
क्रोधरक्तेक्षणा सा गौर्हम्भारवघनस्वना। विश्वामित्रस्य तत्सैन्यं व्यद्रावयत सर्वशः ॥१-१६५-३२॥
krodharaktekṣaṇā sā gaurhambhāravaghanasvanā। viśvāmitrasya tatsainyaṃ vyadrāvayata sarvaśaḥ ॥1-165-32॥

कशाग्रदण्डाभिहता काल्यमाना ततस्ततः। क्रोधदीप्तेक्षणा क्रोधं भूय एव समादधे ॥१-१६५-३३॥
kaśāgradanḍābhihatā kālyamānā tatastataḥ। krodhadīptekṣaṇā krodhaṃ bhūya eva samādadhe ॥1-165-33॥

आदित्य इव मध्याह्ने क्रोधदीप्तवपुर्बभौ। अङ्गारवर्षं मुञ्चन्ती मुहुर्वालधितो महत् ॥१-१६५-३४॥
āditya iva madhyāhne krodhadīptavapur babhau। aṅgāravarṣaṃ muñcantī muhur vāladhito mahat ॥1-165-34॥

na ca prāṇair viyujyanta kecit te sainikās tadā। viśvāmitrasya saṅkruddhair vāsiṣṭhair bharatarṣabha ॥1-165-39॥

O bull among the Bharatas, at that time, none of those soldiers of Viśvāmitra were separated from their lives by the enraged Vasiṣṭhas.
विश्वामित्रस्य सैन्यं तु काल्यमानं त्रियोजनम्। क्रोशमानं भयोद्विग्नं त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छत ॥१-१६५-४०॥
viśvāmitrasya sainyaṃ tu kālyamānaṃ triyojanam। krośamānaṃ bhayodvignaṃ trātāraṃ nādhyagacchata ॥1-165-40॥

दृष्ट्वा तन्महदाश्चर्यं ब्रह्मतेजोभवं तदा। विश्वामित्रः क्षत्रभावान्निर्विण्णो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१-१६५-४१॥
dṛṣṭvā tan-mahad-āścaryaṃ brahma-tejo-bhavaṃ tadā। viśvāmitraḥ kṣatra-bhāvān nirviṇṇaḥ vākyam abravīt ॥1-165-41॥

(Having seen that great wonder, the origin of Brahmanic splendor, then Viśvāmitra, disheartened from the state of a warrior, spoke words.)
Upon witnessing that great marvel, the source of Brahmanic radiance, Viśvāmitra, feeling disheartened by his warrior status, spoke these words.
धिग्बलं क्षत्रियबलं ब्रह्मतेजोबलं बलम्। बलाबलं विनिश्चित्य तप एव परं बलम् ॥१-१६५-४२॥
dhigbalaṃ kṣatriyabalaṃ brahmatejobalaṃ balam। balābalaṃ viniścitya tapa eva paraṃ balam ॥1-165-42॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; बलम् (balam) - strength; क्षत्रियबलम् (kṣatriyabalam) - the strength of warriors; ब्रह्मतेजोबलम् (brahmatejobalam) - the strength of brāhmaṇa's spiritual energy; बलम् (balam) - strength; बल-अबलम् (bala-abalam) - strength and weakness; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having ascertained; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; परम् (param) - supreme; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(Condemn strength, the strength of warriors, the strength of brāhmaṇa's spiritual energy, (mere) strength. Having ascertained strength and weakness, austerity indeed is the supreme strength.)
Condemn physical strength, the might of warriors, and even the spiritual power of brāhmaṇas; having considered both strength and weakness, austerity alone is the highest strength.
स राज्यं स्फीतमुत्सृज्य तां च दीप्तां नृपश्रियम्। भोगांश्च पृष्ठतः कृत्वा तपस्येव मनो दधे ॥१-१६५-४३॥
sa rājyaṃ sphītam utsṛjya tāṃ ca dīptāṃ nṛpa-śriyam। bhogāṃś ca pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tapasy eva mano dadhe ॥1-165-43॥
[स (sa) - he; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; स्फीतम् (sphītam) - prosperous; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; ताम् (tām) - that; च (ca) - and; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - brilliant; नृपश्रियम् (nṛpa-śriyam) - royal splendor; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; तपस्य (tapasi) - in austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - he fixed;]
(He, having abandoned the prosperous kingdom and that brilliant royal splendor, and having placed enjoyments behind, indeed fixed his mind on austerity.)
He renounced his prosperous kingdom and radiant royal glory, set aside all enjoyments, and devoted his mind solely to austerity.
स गत्वा तपसा सिद्धिं लोकान्विष्टभ्य तेजसा। तताप सर्वान्दीप्तौजा ब्राह्मणत्वमवाप च ॥ अपिबच्च सुतं सोममिन्द्रेण सह कौशिकः ॥१-१६५-४४॥
sa gatvā tapasā siddhiṃ lokān viṣṭabhya tejasā। tatāpa sarvān dīptaujā brāhmaṇatvam avāpa ca॥ apibac ca sutaṃ somam indreṇa saha kauśikaḥ॥1-165-44॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; सिद्धिं (siddhim) - perfection; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; विष्टभ्य (viṣṭabhya) - having pervaded; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; तताप (tatāpa) - he scorched; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दीप्तौजा (dīptaujā) - with blazing energy; ब्राह्मणत्वम् (brāhmaṇatvam) - Brahminhood; अवाप (avāpa) - he attained; च (ca) - and; अपिबत् (apibat) - he drank; च (ca) - and; सुतं (sutaṃ) - Soma (the extract); सोमम् (somam) - Soma; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together with; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kauśika; ॥१-१६५-४४॥ (॥1-165-44॥) - (verse number);]
(He, having gone, by austerity, perfection, worlds having pervaded by brilliance, scorched all with blazing energy, attained Brahminhood and. And Kauśika drank Soma, the extract, together with Indra.)
