कल्माषपाद इत्यस्मिँल्लोके राजा बभूव ह। इक्ष्वाकुवंशजः पार्थ तेजसासदृशो भुवि ॥१-१६६-१॥
kalmāṣapāda ityasmiṃlloke rājā babhūva ha। ikṣvākúvaṃśajaḥ pārtha tejasāsadṛśo bhuvi ॥1-166-1॥

O Pārtha, there was a king named Kalmāṣapāda in this world, a descendant of Ikṣvāku, who was equal in splendor on earth.
स कदाचिद्वनं राजा मृगयां निर्ययौ पुरात्। मृगान्विध्यन्वराहांश्च चचार रिपुमर्दनः ॥१-१६६-२॥
sa kadācid vanaṃ rājā mṛgayāṃ niryayau purāt। mṛgān vidhyan varāhāṃś ca cacāra ripumardanaḥ॥1-166-2॥

स तु राजा महात्मानं वासिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम्। तृषार्तश्च क्षुधार्तश्च एकायनगतः पथि ॥१-१६६-३॥
sa tu rājā mahātmānaṃ vāsiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam। tṛṣārtaś ca kṣudhārtaś ca ekāyanagataḥ pathi ॥1-166-3॥

(He but king great-souled descendant of Vasiṣṭha best among sages afflicted by thirst and afflicted by hunger and having gone by a single path on the path.)

अपश्यदजितः सङ्ख्ये मुनिं प्रतिमुखागतम्। शक्तिं नाम महाभागं वसिष्ठकुलनन्दनम् ॥ ज्येष्ठं पुत्रशतात्पुत्रं वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः ॥१-१६६-४॥
apaśyad ajitaḥ saṅkhye muniṃ pratimukhāgatam। śaktiṃ nāma mahābhāgaṃ vasiṣṭhakulanandanam॥ jyeṣṭhaṃ putraśatāt putraṃ vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ॥1-166-4॥

(Ajita saw in the battle the sage who had come before (him), Śakti by name, most fortunate, the delight of the lineage of Vasiṣṭha, the eldest son from a hundred sons of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha.)

अपगच्छ पथोऽस्माकमित्येवं पार्थिवोऽब्रवीत्। तथा ऋषिरुवाचैनं सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥१-१६६-५॥
apagaccha patho'smākamityevaṃ pārthivo'bravīt। tathā ṛṣiruvācainaṃ sāntvayañślakṣṇayā girā ॥1-166-5॥

(Go away from our path—thus in this way the king said. Then the sage spoke to him, soothing with gentle speech.)
"Go away from our path," said the king. Then the sage addressed him, soothing him with gentle words.
ऋषिस्तु नापचक्राम तस्मिन्धर्मपथे स्थितः। नापि राजा मुनेर्मानात्क्रोधाच्चापि जगाम ह ॥१-१६६-६॥
ṛṣis tu nāpacakrāma tasmin dharmapathe sthitaḥ। nāpi rājā muner mānāt krodhāc cāpi jagāma ha ॥1-166-6॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अपचक्राम (apacakrāma) - departed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; धर्मपथे (dharmapathe) - path of dharma; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; राजा (rājā) - king; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; मानात् (mānāt) - from pride; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But the sage did not depart from that path of dharma, standing firm. Nor did the king, from pride or from anger towards the sage, indeed depart.)
But the sage remained steadfast on the path of dharma. Nor did the king, out of pride or anger towards the sage, depart from it.
अमुञ्चन्तं तु पन्थानं तमृषिं नृपसत्तमः। जघान कशया मोहात्तदा राक्षसवन्मुनिम् ॥१-१६६-७॥
amuñcantaṃ tu panthānaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ nṛpasattamaḥ। jaghāna kaśayā mohāt tadā rākṣasavan munim ॥1-166-7॥
[अमुञ्चन्तं (amuñcantam) - not releasing; तु (tu) - but; पन्थानं (panthānam) - the path; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣim) - sage; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - the best among kings; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; कशया (kaśayā) - with a whip; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; तदा (tadā) - then; राक्षसवत् (rākṣasavat) - like a demon; मुनिम् (munim) - the sage;]
(But not releasing the path, him, the sage, the best among kings struck with a whip, out of delusion, then, like a demon, the sage.)
But when the sage did not give way, the best of kings, deluded, struck him with a whip like a demon.
कशाप्रहाराभिहतस्ततः स मुनिसत्तमः। तं शशाप नृपश्रेष्ठं वासिष्ठः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः ॥१-१६६-८॥
kaśā-prahāra-abhi-hataḥ tataḥ saḥ muni-sattamaḥ। taṃ śaśāpa nṛpa-śreṣṭham vāsiṣṭhaḥ krodha-mūrcchitaḥ ॥1-166-8॥
[कशा (kaśā) - whip; प्रहार (prahāra) - blow; अभिहतः (abhi-hataḥ) - struck; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिसत्तमः (muni-sattamaḥ) - the best among sages; तं (tam) - him; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; नृपश्रेष्ठं (nṛpa-śreṣṭham) - the best among kings; वासिष्ठः (vāsiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; क्रोधमूर्च्छितः (krodha-mūrcchitaḥ) - overcome with anger;]
(Struck by the blow of the whip, then that best among sages, Vasiṣṭha, overcome with anger, cursed that best among kings.)
Then, struck by the blow of the whip, the eminent sage Vasiṣṭha, overcome with anger, cursed the foremost of kings.
हंसि राक्षसवद्यस्माद्राजापसद तापसम्। तस्मात्त्वमद्य प्रभृति पुरुषादो भविष्यसि ॥१-१६६-९॥
haṁsi rākṣasavad yasmād rājāpasada tāpasam। tasmāt tvam adya prabhṛti puruṣādo bhaviṣyasi॥1-166-9॥
[हंसि (haṁsi) - you kill; (from √han, to kill; 2nd person singular, present indicative) राक्षसवत् (rākṣasavat) - like a demon; (rākṣasa - demon, vat - like;) यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; (from yasmāt - since, because;) राजापसद (rājāpasada) - outcast of kings; (rājā - king, apasada - outcast;) तापसम् (tāpasam) - ascetic; (tāpasa - ascetic, m. accusative singular;) तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; (tasmāt - therefore;) त्वम् (tvam) - you; (tvam - you;) अद्य (adya) - today; (adya - today;) प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; (prabhṛti - beginning, from now on;) पुरुषादः (puruṣādaḥ) - man-eater; (puruṣa - man, āda - eater; nominative singular;) भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; (from √bhū, to be; 2nd person singular, future indicative;]
(You kill like a demon because you, an outcast of kings, (kill) an ascetic. Therefore, from today onwards, you will become a man-eater.)
Because you, an outcast among kings, have killed an ascetic like a demon, therefore from this day forward, you shall become a man-eater.
मनुष्यपिशिते सक्तश्चरिष्यसि महीमिमाम्। गच्छ राजाधमेत्युक्तः शक्तिना वीर्यशक्तिना ॥१-१६६-१०॥
manuṣyapiśite saktaś cariṣyasi mahīm imām। gaccha rājādhameti uktaḥ śaktinā vīryaśaktinā ॥1-166-10॥
[मनुष्य (manuṣya) - man; पिशिते (piśite) - in flesh; सक्तः (saktaḥ) - attached; चरिष्यसि (cariṣyasi) - you will roam; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; राजाधम (rājādhama) - lowest of kings; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been told; शक्तिना (śaktinā) - by Śakti; वीर्यशक्तिना (vīryaśaktinā) - by the power of heroism;]
(Attached to human flesh, you will roam this earth. "Go, lowest of kings," thus having been told by Śakti, by the power of heroism.)
You will wander this earth, attached to human flesh. Having been told, "Go, lowest of kings," by Śakti with the power of heroism.
ततो याज्यनिमित्तं तु विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठयोः। वैरमासीत्तदा तं तु विश्वामित्रोऽन्वपद्यत ॥१-१६६-११॥
tato yājyanimittaṃ tu viśvāmitravasiṣṭhayoḥ। vairam āsīt tadā taṃ tu viśvāmitro'nvapadyata ॥1-166-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; याज्यनिमित्तं (yājyanimittaṃ) - for the sake of the sacrificial rite; तु (tu) - but; विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठयोः (viśvāmitravasiṣṭhayoḥ) - between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तदा (tadā) - then; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अन्वपद्यत् (anvapadyata) - pursued;]
(Then, for the sake of the sacrificial rite, but between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha, enmity was; then him but Viśvāmitra pursued.)
Then, for the sake of the sacrifice, enmity arose between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha; at that time, Viśvāmitra pursued him.
तयोर्विवदतोरेवं समीपमुपचक्रमे। ऋषिरुग्रतपाः पार्थ विश्वामित्रः प्रतापवान् ॥१-१६६-१२॥
tayor vivadator evaṃ samīpam upacakrame। ṛṣir ugratapāḥ pārtha viśvāmitraḥ pratāpavān ॥1-166-12॥
[तयोः (tayoh) - of those two; विवदतोः (vivadatoḥ) - while disputing; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; उपचक्रमे (upacakrame) - approached; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उग्रतपाः (ugratapāḥ) - of severe penance; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful;]
(Of those two, while disputing thus, near approached the sage of severe penance, O son of Pritha, Viśvāmitra, powerful.)
O son of Pritha, as those two were disputing in this way, the powerful sage Viśvāmitra, who had performed severe penance, approached them.
ततः स बुबुधे पश्चात्तमृषिं नृपसत्तमः। ऋषेः पुत्रं वसिष्ठस्य वसिष्ठमिव तेजसा ॥१-१६६-१३॥
tataḥ sa bubudhe paścāttam ṛṣiṃ nṛpasattamaḥ। ṛṣeḥ putraṃ vasiṣṭhasya vasiṣṭham iva tejasā ॥1-166-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; बुबुधे (bubudhe) - became aware; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - the best among kings; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) - like Vasiṣṭha; इव (iva) - like; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance;]
(Then he, the best among kings, afterwards became aware of that sage, the son of the sage Vasiṣṭha, who was like Vasiṣṭha in brilliance.)
Then the noble king realized that the sage before him was the son of Vasiṣṭha, possessing brilliance like Vasiṣṭha himself.
अन्तर्धाय तदात्मानं विश्वामित्रोऽपि भारत। तावुभावुपचक्राम चिकीर्षन्नात्मनः प्रियम् ॥१-१६६-१४॥
antardhāya tad-ātmānam viśvāmitro'pi bhārata। tau ubhau upacakrāma cikīrṣan ātmanaḥ priyam ॥1-166-14॥
[अन्तर्धाय (antardhāya) - having disappeared; (from antar-dhā, to disappear;) तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अपि (api) - also; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; उपचक्राम (upacakrāma) - approached; चिकीर्षन् (cikīrṣan) - desiring to do; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing;]
(Having disappeared that self, Viśvāmitra also, O Bhārata, those two both approached, desiring to do what was pleasing to himself.)
O Bhārata, after Viśvāmitra had disappeared his form, both of them approached, wishing to do what was pleasing to themselves.
स तु शप्तस्तदा तेन शक्तिना वै नृपोत्तमः। जगाम शरणं शक्तिं प्रसादयितुमर्हयन् ॥१-१६६-१५॥
sa tu śaptas tadā tena śaktinā vai nṛpottamaḥ। jagāma śaraṇaṃ śaktiṃ prasādayitum arhayan ॥1-166-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; शक्तिना (śaktinā) - by Śakti; वै (vai) - indeed; नृप-उत्तमः (nṛpa-uttamaḥ) - the best among kings; जगाम (jagāma) - went; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - to Śakti; प्रसादयितुम् (prasādayitum) - to propitiate; अर्हयन् (arhayan) - desiring;]
(He but cursed then by him by Śakti indeed the best among kings went refuge to Śakti to propitiate desiring.)
But he, the best among kings, having been cursed by Śakti at that time, went to Śakti seeking refuge, desiring to propitiate him.
तस्य भावं विदित्वा स नृपतेः कुरुनन्दन। विश्वामित्रस्ततो रक्ष आदिदेश नृपं प्रति ॥१-१६६-१६॥
tasya bhāvaṃ viditvā sa nṛpateḥ kurunandana। viśvāmitrastato rakṣa ādideśa nṛpaṃ prati ॥1-166-16॥

(Having known his state, he, O descendant of Kuru, Viśvāmitra then commanded protection towards the king.)

स शापात्तस्य विप्रर्षेर्विश्वामित्रस्य चाज्ञया। राक्षसः किङ्करो नाम विवेश नृपतिं तदा ॥१-१६६-१७॥
sa śāpāttasya viprarṣerviśvāmitrasya cājñayā। rākṣasaḥ kiṅkaro nāma viveśa nṛpatiṃ tadā ॥1-166-17॥

(He, from the curse of that sage among Brāhmaṇas, by the command of Viśvāmitra, the demon named Kiṅkara then entered the king.)

रक्षसा तु गृहीतं तं विदित्वा स मुनिस्तदा। विश्वामित्रोऽप्यपक्रामत्तस्माद्देशादरिंदम ॥१-१६६-१८॥
rakṣasā tu gṛhītaṃ taṃ viditvā sa munistadā। viśvāmitro'pyapakrāmattasmāddeśādariṃdama ॥1-166-18॥
[रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; तु (tu) - but; गृहीतं (gṛhītam) - seized; तं (taṃ) - him; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तदा (tadā) - then; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अपि (api) - also; अपक्रामत् (apakrāmat) - departed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; देशात् (deśāt) - region; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes;]
(But having known that he was seized by the demon, then that sage Viśvāmitra also departed from that region, O subduer of foes.)

ततः स नृपतिर्विद्वान्रक्षन्नात्मानमात्मना। बलवत्पीड्यमानोऽपि रक्षसान्तर्गतेन ह ॥१-१६६-१९॥
tataḥ sa nṛpatir vidvān rakṣan nātmānam ātmanā। balavat-pīḍyamānaḥ api rakṣasā antar-gatena ha ॥1-166-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; रक्षन् (rakṣan) - protecting; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by himself; बलवत् (balavat) - strongly; पीड्यमानः (pīḍyamānaḥ) - being tormented; अपि (api) - even; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; अन्तर्गतेन (antargatena) - entered within; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then he, the wise king, protecting himself by himself, though being strongly tormented even by the demon who had entered within, indeed.)
Then that wise king, even while being strongly tormented by the demon who had entered within him, protected himself by his own effort.
ददर्श तं द्विजः कश्चिद्राजानं प्रस्थितं पुनः। ययाचे क्षुधितश्चैनं समांसं भोजनं तदा ॥१-१६६-२०॥
dadarśa taṃ dvijaḥ kaścid rājānaṃ prasthitaṃ punaḥ। yayāce kṣudhitaś cainaṃ samāṃsaṃ bhojanaṃ tadā॥1-166-20॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तं (taṃ) - him; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (brāhmaṇa); कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; प्रस्थितम् (prasthitam) - departing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ययाचे (yayāce) - requested; क्षुधितः (kṣudhitaḥ) - hungry; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; समांसम् (samāṃsam) - with meat; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(A certain twice-born (brāhmaṇa) saw him, the king, departing again; then, being hungry, he requested him for food with meat.)

तमुवाचाथ राजर्षिर्द्विजं मित्रसहस्तदा। आस्स्व ब्रह्मंस्त्वमत्रैव मुहूर्तमिति सान्त्वयन् ॥१-१६६-२१॥
tam uvācātha rājarṣir dvijaṃ mitrasahas tadā। āssva brahmaṃs tvam atraiva muhūrtam iti sāntvayan ॥1-166-21॥

(Him said then the royal sage to the twice-born Mitrasaha then: "Rest, O Brāhmaṇa, you right here for a moment"—thus soothing (him).)

निवृत्तः प्रतिदास्यामि भोजनं ते यथेप्सितम्। इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा तस्थौ च द्विजसत्तमः ॥१-१६६-२२॥
nivṛttaḥ pratidāsyāmi bhojanaṃ te yathepsitam। ity uktvā prayayau rājā tasthau ca dvijasattamaḥ ॥1-166-22॥

अन्तर्गतं तु तद्राज्ञस्तदा ब्राह्मणभाषितम्। सोऽन्तःपुरं प्रविश्याथ संविवेश नराधिपः ॥१-१६६-२३॥
antargataṃ tu tadrājñastadā brāhmaṇabhāṣitam। so'ntaḥpuraṃ praviśyātha saṃviveśa narādhipaḥ ॥1-166-23॥

ततोऽर्धरात्र उत्थाय सूदमानाय्य सत्वरम्। उवाच राजा संस्मृत्य ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥१-१६६-२४॥

गच्छामुष्मिन्नसौ देशे ब्राह्मणो मां प्रतीक्षते। अन्नार्थी त्वं तमन्नेन समांसेनोपपादय ॥१-१६६-२५॥
gacchāmuṣminnasau deśe brāhmaṇo māṃ pratīkṣate। annārthī tvaṃ tamannena samāṃsenopapādaya ॥1-166-25॥

एवमुक्तस्तदा सूदः सोऽनासाद्यामिषं क्वचित्। निवेदयामास तदा तस्मै राज्ञे व्यथान्वितः ॥१-१६६-२६॥

राजा तु रक्षसाविष्टः सूदमाह गतव्यथः। अप्येनं नरमांसेन भोजयेति पुनः पुनः ॥१-१६६-२७॥
rājā tu rakṣasāviṣṭaḥ sūdam āha gatavyathaḥ। apy enaṃ naramāṃsena bhojayeti punaḥ punaḥ॥1-166-27॥

(The king, but possessed by a demon, to the cook said, having lost all pain: "Even him with human flesh feed," thus again and again.)
But the king, possessed by a demon and having lost all sense of pain, repeatedly told the cook, "Feed him with human flesh."
तथेत्युक्त्वा ततः सूदः संस्थानं वध्यघातिनाम्। गत्वा जहार त्वरितो नरमांसमपेतभीः ॥१-१६६-२८॥
tathety uktvā tataḥ sūdaḥ sansthānaṃ vadhyaghātinām। gatvā jahāra tvarito naramāṃsam apetabhīḥ ॥1-166-28॥

After saying this, the cook then went to the place of the condemned and, without fear, quickly took the human flesh.
स तत्संस्कृत्य विधिवदन्नोपहितमाशु वै। तस्मै प्रादाद्ब्राह्मणाय क्षुधिताय तपस्विने ॥१-१६६-२९॥
sa tatsaṃskṛtya vidhivad annopahitam āśu vai। tasmai prādād brāhmaṇāya kṣudhitàya tapasvine ॥1-166-29॥

(He, having prepared that food according to rule, quickly indeed gave it to him, to the brāhmaṇa, to the hungry, to the ascetic.)

स सिद्धचक्षुषा दृष्ट्वा तदन्नं द्विजसत्तमः। अभोज्यमिदमित्याह क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥१-१६६-३०॥
sa siddhacakṣuṣā dṛṣṭvā tadannaṃ dvijasattamaḥ। abhojyamidamityāha krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ॥1-166-30॥

(He, with perfected vision, having seen that food, the best among twice-born said, "This is unfit to be eaten," with eyes agitated by anger.)
With his perfected vision, the foremost of the twice-born saw that food and, his eyes filled with anger, declared, "This is unfit to be eaten."
यस्मादभोज्यमन्नं मे ददाति स नराधिपः। तस्मात्तस्यैव मूढस्य भविष्यत्यत्र लोलुपा ॥१-१६६-३१॥
yasmād abhojyam annaṃ me dadāti sa narādhipaḥ। tasmāt tasyaiva mūḍhasya bhaviṣyaty atra lolupā ॥1-166-31॥

(Because of which not-fit-to-be-eaten food to me gives he king, therefore of him only of the deluded will be here greed.)
The king who gives me food that is not fit to be eaten, therefore, only that deluded one will have greed here.
सक्तो मानुषमांसेषु यथोक्तः शक्तिना पुरा। उद्वेजनीयो भूतानां चरिष्यति महीमिमाम् ॥१-१६६-३२॥
sakto mānuṣamāṃseṣu yathoktaḥ śaktinā purā। udvejanīyo bhūtānāṃ cariṣyati mahīmimām ॥1-166-32॥
[सक्तः (saktaḥ) - attached; मानुषमांसेषु (mānuṣamāṃseṣu) - in human flesh; यथोक्तः (yathoktaḥ) - as stated; शक्तिना (śaktinā) - by power; पुरा (purā) - formerly; उद्वेजनीयः (udvejanīyaḥ) - one who causes agitation; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will roam; महीमिमाम् (mahīmimām) - this earth;]
(Attached to human flesh, as stated, formerly by power, one who causes agitation of beings will roam this earth.)
He, who was formerly attached to human flesh as stated and empowered, will now roam this earth causing agitation among beings.
द्विरनुव्याहृते राज्ञः स शापो बलवानभूत्। रक्षोबलसमाविष्टो विसञ्ज्ञश्चाभवत्तदा ॥१-१६६-३३॥
dviranuvyāhṛte rājñaḥ sa śāpo balavānabhūt। rakṣobalasamāviṣṭo visañjñaścābhavattadā ॥1-166-33॥
[द्वि (dvi) - twice; अनु (anu) - after; व्याहृते (vyāhṛte) - having been uttered; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सः (saḥ) - he; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; रक्षो (rakṣaḥ) - demon; बल (bala) - strength; समाविष्टः (samāviṣṭaḥ) - possessed; विसञ्ज्ञः (visañjñaḥ) - unconscious; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(When it was uttered twice by the king, that curse became powerful. Possessed by the strength of the demon, he then became unconscious.)

(Then he, the best among kings, whose senses were afflicted by the demon, having seen Śakti, said to him, as if after not much time, O Bhārata.)

(Because of which unsuitable curse has been inflicted by you upon me, therefore from you I shall proceed to eat humans.)
Because you have inflicted this improper curse upon me, therefore, I shall henceforth proceed from you to eat humans.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः सद्यस्तं प्राणैर्विप्रयुज्य सः। शक्तिनं भक्षयामास व्याघ्रः पशुमिवेप्सितम् ॥१-१६६-३६॥

(Thus having spoken, then immediately, having separated him from his life-breaths, he, the tiger, devoured Śaktin like a desired animal.)
Having said this, the tiger immediately killed Śaktin and devoured him as he would a desired animal.
शक्तिनं तु हतं दृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रस्ततः पुनः। वसिष्ठस्यैव पुत्रेषु तद्रक्षः संदिदेश ह ॥१-१६६-३७॥
śaktinaṃ tu hataṃ dṛṣṭvā viśvāmitras tataḥ punaḥ। vasiṣṭhasyaiva putreṣu tadrakṣaḥ saṃdideśa ha ॥1-166-37॥

(But having seen Śakti killed, Viśvāmitra then again indeed commanded that rākṣasa among the sons of Vasiṣṭha.)
But when Viśvāmitra saw Śakti slain, he again commanded that rākṣasa to attack the sons of Vasiṣṭha.
स ताञ्शतावरान्पुत्रान्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः। भक्षयामास सङ्क्रुद्धः सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव ॥१-१६६-३८॥
sa tāñśatāvarānputrān vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ। bhakṣayāmāsa saṅkruddhaḥ siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgāniva ॥1-166-38॥

(He, enraged, the lion, ate those hundred-strong sons of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha, like small animals.)
Enraged, the lion devoured those hundred sons of the great sage Vasiṣṭha as if they were mere small animals.
वसिष्ठो घातिताञ्श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रेण तान्सुतान्। धारयामास तं शोकं महाद्रिरिव मेदिनीम् ॥१-१६६-३९॥
vasiṣṭho ghātitāñśrutvā viśvāmitreṇa tānsutān। dhārayāmāsa taṃ śokaṃ mahādririva medinīm ॥1-166-39॥
[वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; (the sage's name); घातितान् (ghātitān) - killed; slain; destroyed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitreṇa) - by Viśvāmitra; तान् (tān) - those; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - bore; endured; held; तं (taṃ) - that; शोकं (śokaṃ) - grief; महाद्रिरिव (mahādririva) - like a great mountain; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth;]
(Vasiṣṭha, having heard that his sons were killed by Viśvāmitra, bore that grief like the earth (bears) a great mountain.)
When Vasiṣṭha heard that his sons had been slain by Viśvāmitra, he endured that grief as the earth endures a great mountain.
चक्रे चात्मविनाशाय बुद्धिं स मुनिसत्तमः। न त्वेव कुशिकोच्छेदं मेने मतिमतां वरः ॥१-१६६-४०॥
cakre cātmavināśāya buddhiṃ sa munisattamaḥ। na tveva kuśikocchedam mene matimatāṃ varaḥ ॥1-166-40॥

(He, the best among sages, made a resolve for self-destruction, but did not indeed consider the destruction of the Kuśika lineage, the best of the wise.)

(He, from the summit of Meru, released his self, the venerable sage; his head on the rock also fell like in a heap of cotton.)
The venerable sage released his life from the summit of Meru; his head fell on the rock as if into a heap of cotton.
न ममार च पातेन स यदा तेन पाण्डव। तदाग्निमिद्ध्वा भगवान्संविवेश महावने ॥१-१६६-४२॥

(Not died and by the fall he when by that, O Pāṇḍava, then having kindled fire, the venerable one entered into the great forest.)
He did not die from the fall, O Pāṇḍava; then, having kindled the fire, the venerable one entered the great forest.
तं तदा सुसमिद्धोऽपि न ददाह हुताशनः। दीप्यमानोऽप्यमित्रघ्न शीतोऽग्निरभवत्ततः ॥१-१६६-४३॥
taṃ tadā susamiddho'pi na dadāha hutāśanaḥ। dīpyamāno'pyamitraghna śīto'gnirabhavattataḥ ॥1-166-43॥

(Him then, even though well-kindled, the fire did not burn; even though blazing, O destroyer of enemies, the fire became cool thereafter.)
Then, O destroyer of enemies, although the fire was well-kindled and blazing, it did not burn him; instead, the fire became cool thereafter.
स समुद्रमभिप्रेत्य शोकाविष्टो महामुनिः। बद्ध्वा कण्ठे शिलां गुर्वीं निपपात तदम्भसि ॥१-१६६-४४॥
sa samudram abhipretya śokāviṣṭo mahāmuniḥ। baddhvā kaṇṭhe śilāṃ gurvīṃ nipapāta tad ambhasi ॥1-166-44॥

(He, having approached the ocean, the great sage overcome by grief, having tied a heavy stone on his neck, fell down into that water.)
The great sage, overwhelmed with grief, went to the ocean, tied a heavy stone around his neck, and plunged into the water.
स समुद्रोर्मिवेगेन स्थले न्यस्तो महामुनिः। जगाम स ततः खिन्नः पुनरेवाश्रमं प्रति ॥१-१६६-४५॥
sa samudrormivegena sthale nyasto mahāmuniḥ। jagāma sa tataḥ khinnaḥ punarevāśramaṃ prati॥1-166-45॥
[स (sa) - he; समुद्र-उर्मि-वेगेन (samudra-urmi-vegena) - by the force of ocean waves; स्थले (sthale) - on the ground; न्यस्तः (nyastaḥ) - placed; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; जगाम (jagāma) - went; स (sa) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - then; खिन्नः (khinnaḥ) - distressed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; आश्रमं (āśramaṃ) - to the hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(He, placed on the ground by the force of ocean waves, the great sage, went then, distressed, again indeed towards the hermitage.)
The great sage, having been cast onto the ground by the force of the ocean's waves, then, distressed, went again towards the hermitage.
