The gandharva said.
एवमुक्तः स विप्रर्षिर्वसिष्ठेन महात्मना। न्ययच्छदात्मनः कोपं सर्वलोकपराभवात् ॥१-१७२-१॥
evam-uktaḥ sa viprarṣir vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā। nyayacchad ātmanaḥ kopaṃ sarvaloka-parābhavāt ॥1-172-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa-sage; वसिष्ठेन (vasiṣṭhena) - by Vasiṣṭha; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; न्ययच्छत् (nyayacchat) - restrained; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own; कोपम् (kopam) - anger; सर्वलोकपराभवात् (sarvaloka-parābhavāt) - from the defeat of all worlds;]
(Thus addressed, he, the Brāhmaṇa-sage, by the great-souled Vasiṣṭha, restrained his own anger from the defeat of all worlds.)
Thus, when addressed by the great-souled Vasiṣṭha, the Brāhmaṇa-sage restrained his anger that arose from the defeat of all worlds.
ईजे च स महातेजाः सर्ववेदविदां वरः। ऋषी राक्षससत्रेण शाक्तेयोऽथ पराशरः ॥१-१७२-२॥
īje ca sa mahātejāḥ sarvavedavidāṃ varaḥ। ṛṣī rākṣasasatreṇa śākteyo'tha parāśaraḥ ॥1-172-2॥
[ईजे (īje) - he worshipped; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; सर्ववेदविदां (sarvavedavidām) - of all knowers of the Vedas; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; ऋषी (ṛṣī) - the sage; राक्षससत्रेण (rākṣasasatreṇa) - by the sacrifice against the rākṣasas; शाक्तेयः (śākteyaḥ) - the son of Śakti; अथ (atha) - then; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parāśara;]
(He worshipped, and he, of great brilliance, the best of all knowers of the Vedas, the sage, by the sacrifice against the rākṣasas, the son of Śakti, then Parāśara.)
Parāśara, the son of Śakti, the illustrious sage and foremost among all knowers of the Vedas, performed a sacrifice against the rākṣasas.
ततो वृद्धांश्च बालांश्च राक्षसान्स महामुनिः। ददाह वितते यज्ञे शक्तेर्वधमनुस्मरन् ॥१-१७२-३॥
tato vṛddhāṃś ca bālāṃś ca rākṣasān sa mahāmuniḥ। dadāha vitate yajñe śakter vadham anusmaran ॥1-172-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - old ones; च (ca) - and; बालान् (bālān) - children; च (ca) - and; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas; सः (saḥ) - he; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; वितते (vitate) - spread; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; शक्तेः (śakteḥ) - of Śakti; वधम् (vadham) - killing; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering;]
(Then the great sage, remembering the killing of Śakti, burned the old and the young rākṣasas in the sacrifice that was spread out.)
Then the great sage, recalling the killing of Śakti, burned both the old and young rākṣasas in the extended sacrifice.
न हि तं वारयामास वसिष्ठो रक्षसां वधात्। द्वितीयामस्य मा भाङ्क्षं प्रतिज्ञामिति निश्चयात् ॥१-१७२-४॥
na hi taṃ vārayāmāsa vasiṣṭho rakṣasāṃ vadhāt। dvitīyāmasya mā bhāṅkṣaṃ pratijñāmiti niścayāt॥1-172-4॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; वारयामास (vārayāmāsa) - restrained; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; वधात् (vadhāt) - from killing; द्वितीयाम् (dvitīyām) - the second; अस्य (asya) - of him; मा (mā) - do not; भाङ्क्षम् (bhāṅkṣam) - break; प्रतिज्ञाम् (pratijñām) - vow; इति (iti) - thus; निश्चयात् (niścayāt) - from determination;]
(Indeed, Vasiṣṭha did not restrain him from killing the Rākṣasas. (He thought:) 'Do not break his second vow'—thus, from determination.)
Vasiṣṭha did not stop him from killing the Rākṣasas, firmly resolved that the second vow should not be broken.
त्रयाणां पावकानां स सत्रे तस्मिन्महामुनिः। आसीत्पुरस्ताद्दीप्तानां चतुर्थ इव पावकः ॥१-१७२-५॥
trayāṇāṃ pāvakānāṃ sa satre tasmin mahāmuniḥ। āsīt purastād dīptānāṃ caturtha iva pāvakaḥ॥1-172-5॥
[त्रयाणां (trayāṇām) - of the three; पावकानां (pāvakānām) - of fires; स (sa) - he; सत्रे (satre) - in the sacrifice; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front; दीप्तानां (dīptānām) - of the blazing; चतुर्थः (caturthaḥ) - the fourth; इव (iva) - like; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire;]
(Of the three fires, he, the great sage, in that sacrifice, was in front of the blazing ones like a fourth fire.)
In that sacrifice, the great sage was present before the three blazing fires, like a fourth fire himself.
तेन यज्ञेन शुभ्रेण हूयमानेन युक्तितः। तद्विदीपितमाकाशं सूर्येणेव घनात्यये ॥१-१७२-६॥
tena yajñena śubhreṇa hūyamānena yuktitaḥ। tadvidīpitamākāśaṃ sūryeṇeva ghanātyaye ॥1-172-6॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; यज्ञेन (yajñena) - by the sacrifice; शुभ्रेण (śubhreṇa) - by the pure; हूयमानेन (hūyamānena) - being offered; युक्तितः (yuktitaḥ) - with propriety; तत् (tat) - that; विदीपितम् (vidīpitam) - illuminated; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - by the sun; इव (iva) - like; घनात्यये (ghanātyaye) - at the end of the clouds (after the clouds have gone);]
(By that sacrifice, pure, being offered with propriety, that sky was illuminated, like by the sun at the end of the clouds.)
By that pure sacrifice, which was being offered properly, the sky was illuminated, just as it is by the sun when the clouds have cleared.
तं वसिष्ठादयः सर्वे मुनयस्तत्र मेनिरे। तेजसा दिवि दीप्यन्तं द्वितीयमिव भास्करम् ॥१-१७२-७॥
taṃ vasiṣṭhādayaḥ sarve munayas tatra menire। tejasā divi dīpyantaṃ dvitīyam iva bhāskaram ॥1-172-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वसिष्ठादयः (vasiṣṭhādayaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha and others; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; तत्र (tatra) - there; मेनिरे (menire) - considered; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; दीप्यन्तं (dīpyantam) - shining; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - second; इव (iva) - like; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the sun;]
(Him, Vasiṣṭha and others, all the sages there considered; by brilliance in the sky shining, like a second sun.)
All the sages there, including Vasiṣṭha, considered him to be shining in the sky with brilliance, like a second sun.
ततः परमदुष्प्रापमन्यैरृषिरुदारधीः। समापिपयिषुः सत्रं तमत्रिः समुपागमत् ॥१-१७२-८॥
tataḥ paramaduṣprāpamanyair ṛṣir udāradhīḥ। samāpipayiṣuḥ satraṃ tam atriḥ samupāgamat ॥1-172-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमदुष्प्रापम् (paramaduṣprāpam) - extremely difficult to attain; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - of noble intellect; समापिपयिषुः (samāpipayiṣuḥ) - desiring to complete; सत्रम् (satram) - sacrifice; तम् (tam) - that; अत्रिः (atriḥ) - Atri; समुपागमत् (samupāgamat) - approached;]
(Then, the sage Atri of noble intellect, desiring to complete that sacrifice which was extremely difficult to attain by others, approached.)
Then, the noble-minded sage Atri, wishing to complete that sacrifice which was nearly impossible for others, came there.
तथा पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुश्चैव महाक्रतुम्। उपाजग्मुरमित्रघ्न रक्षसां जीवितेप्सया ॥१-१७२-९॥
tathā pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuścaiva mahākratum। upājagmuramitraghna rakṣasāṃ jīvitepsayā ॥1-172-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; पुलस्त्यः (pulastyaḥ) - Pulastya; पुलहः (pulahaḥ) - Pulaha; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - Kratu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महाक्रतुम् (mahākratum) - the great Kratu; उपाजग्मुः (upājagmuḥ) - approached; अमित्रघ्न (amitraghna) - destroyer of enemies; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; जीवितेप्सया (jīvitepsayā) - with desire for life;]
(Thus Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and indeed the great Kratu approached the destroyer of enemies of the Rākṣasas with desire for life.)
Thus, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and the great Kratu approached the destroyer of enemies of the Rākṣasas, seeking to preserve their lives.
पुलस्त्यस्तु वधात्तेषां रक्षसां भरतर्षभ। उवाचेदं वचः पार्थ पराशरमरिंदमम् ॥१-१७२-१०॥
pulastyas tu vadhāt teṣāṃ rakṣasāṃ bharatarṣabha। uvācedaṃ vacaḥ pārtha parāśaram ariṃ-damam ॥1-172-10॥
[पुलस्त्यः (pulastyaḥ) - Pulastya; (name of a sage); तु (tu) - but; however; वधात् (vadhāt) - from the killing; from destruction; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; of the demons; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; (epithet for Arjuna); उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; (Arjuna); पराशर (parāśara) - Parāśara; (name of a sage); अरिंदमम् (ariṃ-damam) - destroyer of enemies;]
(But Pulastya, O best of the Bharatas, from the destruction of those Rākṣasas, said these words to Parāśara, O son of Pṛthā, destroyer of enemies.)
But Pulastya, O best of the Bharatas, after the destruction of those Rākṣasas, spoke these words to Parāśara, O son of Pṛthā, destroyer of enemies.
कच्चित्तातापविघ्नं ते कच्चिन्नन्दसि पुत्रक। अजानतामदोषाणां सर्वेषां रक्षसां वधात् ॥१-१७२-११॥
kaccittātāpavighnaṃ te kaccinnandasi putraka। ajānatāmadoṣāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ rakṣasāṃ vadhāt ॥1-172-11॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; तात (tāta) - dear son; आपविघ्नं (āpavighnaṃ) - obstacle to happiness; ते (te) - your; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; नन्दसि (nandasi) - you rejoice; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear child; अजानताम् (ajānatām) - of those who do not know; अदोषाणां (adoṣāṇāṃ) - of the innocent; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; वधात् (vadhāt) - from the killing;]
(Whether, dear son, there is any obstacle to your happiness; whether you rejoice, dear child, from the killing of all the innocent and ignorant Rākṣasas.)
Dear son, I hope nothing is obstructing your happiness; I hope you are not rejoicing, dear child, at the killing of all the innocent and ignorant Rākṣasas.
प्रजोच्छेदमिमं मह्यं सर्वं सोमपसत्तम। अधर्मिष्ठं वरिष्ठः सन्कुरुषे त्वं पराशर ॥ राजा कल्माषपादश्च दिवमारोढुमिच्छति ॥१-१७२-१२॥
prajochchedam imaṃ mahyaṃ sarvaṃ somapasattama। adharmaiṣṭhaṃ variṣṭhaḥ san kuruṣe tvaṃ parāśara ॥ rājā kalmāṣapādaś ca divam āroḍhum icchati ॥1-172-12॥
[प्रज-उच्छेदम् (praja-ucchēdam) - destruction of progeny; इमम् (imam) - this; मह्यम् (mahyam) - to me; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सोमप-सत्तम (somapa-sattama) - best of Soma-drinkers; अधर्मिष्ठम् (adharmaiṣṭham) - most unrighteous; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - most excellent; सन् (san) - being; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - you do; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पराशर (parāśara) - Parāśara; राजा (rājā) - king; कल्माषपादः (kalmāṣapādaḥ) - Kalmāṣapāda; च (ca) - and; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to ascend; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(Destruction of progeny, this to me, all, O best of Soma-drinkers, most unrighteous, being most excellent, you do, you, Parāśara. The king Kalmāṣapāda also desires to ascend to heaven.)
O Parāśara, you, being the most excellent and best of Soma-drinkers, are committing this most unrighteous act of total destruction of my progeny. King Kalmāṣapāda also desires to ascend to heaven.
ये च शक्त्यवराः पुत्रा वसिष्ठस्य महामुनेः। ते च सर्वे मुदा युक्ता मोदन्ते सहिताः सुरैः ॥ सर्वमेतद्वसिष्ठस्य विदितं वै महामुने ॥१-१७२-१३॥
ye ca śakty-avarāḥ putrā vasiṣṭhasya mahāmuneḥ। te ca sarve mudā yuktā modante sahitāḥ suraiḥ॥ sarvam etad vasiṣṭhasya viditaṃ vai mahāmune॥ 1-172-13॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural masculine nominative); च (ca) - and; शक्त्यवराः (śakty-avarāḥ) - descendants of Śakti; (avarāḥ = younger, later; śakti = name of a sage, son of Vasiṣṭha); पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; महामुनेः (mahāmuneḥ) - of the great sage; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - joined; endowed; मोदन्ते (modante) - rejoice; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - with the gods; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; विदितम् (viditam) - known; वै (vai) - indeed; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(And those who are the descendants of Śakti, the sons of Vasiṣṭha, O great sage, they all, endowed with joy, rejoice together with the gods. All this, O great sage, is indeed known to Vasiṣṭha.)
O great sage, those who are the descendants of Śakti, the sons of Vasiṣṭha, all of them rejoice together with the gods in happiness. All this is indeed known to Vasiṣṭha, O great sage.
रक्षसां च समुच्छेद एष तात तपस्विनाम्। निमित्तभूतस्त्वं चात्र क्रतौ वासिष्ठनन्दन ॥ स सत्रं मुञ्च भद्रं ते समाप्तमिदमस्तु ते ॥१-१७२-१४॥
rakṣasāṃ ca samuccheda eṣa tāta tapasvinām। nimittabhūtas tvaṃ cātra kratau vāsiṣṭhanandana ॥ sa satraṃ muñca bhadraṃ te samāptam idam astu te ॥1-172-14॥
[रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; समुच्छेदः (samucchedaḥ) - destruction; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; तात (tāta) - O dear one; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of the ascetics; निमित्तभूतः (nimittabhūtaḥ) - the cause; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; क्रतौ (kratau) - in the sacrifice; वासिष्ठनन्दन (vāsiṣṭhanandana) - O son of Vasiṣṭha; स (sa) - he; सत्रम् (satram) - sacrifice; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good; ते (te) - to you; समाप्तम् (samāptam) - completed; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - to you;]
(Of the rākṣasas and destruction this, O dear one, of the ascetics; the cause you and here in the sacrifice, O son of Vasiṣṭha. He sacrifice release, good to you; completed this let it be to you.)
O son of Vasiṣṭha, this destruction of the rākṣasas and of the ascetics has you as its cause here in the sacrifice, O dear one. Now release the sacrifice; may good be to you; let this be completed for you.
एवमुक्तः पुलस्त्येन वसिष्ठेन च धीमता। तदा समापयामास सत्रं शाक्तिः पराशरः ॥१-१७२-१५॥
evam-uktaḥ pulastyena vasiṣṭhena ca dhīmatā। tadā samāpayāmāsa satraṃ śāktiḥ parāśaraḥ ॥1-172-15॥

(Thus addressed by Pulastya and the wise Vasiṣṭha, then Śākti and Parāśara completed the sacrificial session.)
Thus, when Pulastya and the wise Vasiṣṭha had spoken, Śākti and Parāśara then completed the sacrificial session.
सर्वराक्षससत्राय सम्भृतं पावकं मुनिः। उत्तरे हिमवत्पार्श्वे उत्ससर्ज महावने ॥१-१७२-१६॥
sarvarākṣasastrāya sambhṛtaṃ pāvakaṃ muniḥ। uttare himavatpārśve utsasarja mahāvane ॥1-172-16॥
[सर्वराक्षससत्राय (sarva-rākṣasa-satrāya) - for the sacrifice of all rākṣasas; सम्भृतं (sambhṛtam) - collected; पावकं (pāvakam) - fire; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; उत्तरे (uttare) - in the north; हिमवत्पार्श्वे (himavat-pārśve) - on the side of the Himavat (Himalaya); उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - released; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest;]
(The sage collected fire for the sacrifice of all rākṣasas, and released it in the great forest on the northern side of the Himavat (Himalaya).)
The sage gathered fire for the destruction of all rākṣasas and released it in the great forest on the northern side of the Himalayas.
स तत्राद्यापि रक्षांसि वृक्षानश्मान एव च। भक्षयन्दृश्यते वह्निः सदा पर्वणि पर्वणि ॥१-१७२-१७॥
sa tatrādyāpi rakṣāṃsi vṛkṣānaśmāna eva ca। bhakṣayan dṛśyate vahniḥ sadā parvaṇi parvaṇi ॥1-172-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - demons; वृक्षान् (vṛkṣān) - trees; अश्मान् (aśmān) - stones; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; भक्षयन् (bhakṣayan) - devouring; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; सदा (sadā) - always; पर्वणि (parvaṇi) - on the festival; पर्वणि (parvaṇi) - on the festival;]
(He there even today demons trees stones indeed and devouring is seen fire always on the festival on the festival.)
Even today, there, fire is always seen devouring demons, trees, and stones, especially on every festival.
