(Aurva said.)
Aurva spoke.
उक्तवानस्मि यां क्रोधात्प्रतिज्ञां पितरस्तदा। सर्वलोकविनाशाय न सा मे वितथा भवेत् ॥१-१७१-१॥
uktavānasmi yāṃ krodhātpratijñāṃ pitarastadā। sarvalokavināśāya na sā me vitathā bhavet ॥1-171-1॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoken; said; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यां (yāṃ) - which; whom; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñāṃ) - vow; promise; पितरः (pitarah) - father; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; सर्वलोकविनाशाय (sarvalokavināśāya) - for the destruction of all worlds; न (na) - not; सा (sā) - that; मे (me) - my; वितथा (vitathā) - false; untrue; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; would be;]
(I have spoken the vow which, out of anger, my father then (made), for the destruction of all worlds; that should not be false for me.)
I have declared the vow which my father made in anger at that time, for the destruction of all worlds; that vow of mine must not be false.
वृथारोषप्रतिज्ञो हि नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे। अनिस्तीर्णो हि मां रोषो दहेदग्निरिवारणिम् ॥१-१७१-२॥
vṛthāroṣapratijño hi nāhaṃ jīvitum utsahe। anistīrṇo hi māṃ roṣo dahed agnir ivāraṇim ॥1-171-2॥
[वृथारोषप्रतिज्ञः (vṛthāroṣapratijñaḥ) - one whose vow of anger is in vain; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; अनिस्तीर्णः (anistīrṇaḥ) - not overcome; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; रोषः (roṣaḥ) - anger; दहेत् (dahet) - would burn; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; अरणिम् (araṇim) - the fire-stick;]
(Indeed, I, whose vow of anger is in vain, am not able to live. Indeed, the anger not overcome would burn me like fire (burns) the fire-stick.)
Truly, I cannot live with my vow of anger unfulfilled. If my anger is not appeased, it will consume me like fire consumes the fire-stick.
यो हि कारणतः क्रोधं सञ्जातं क्षन्तुमर्हति। नालं स मनुजः सम्यक्त्रिवर्गं परिरक्षितुम् ॥१-१७१-३॥
yo hi kāraṇataḥ krodhaṃ sañjātaṃ kṣantum arhati। nālaṃ sa manujaḥ samyakt trivargaṃ parirakṣitum ॥1-171-3॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; कारणतः (kāraṇataḥ) - for a reason; क्रोधं (krodham) - anger; सञ्जातं (sañjātam) - arisen; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हति (arhati) - is able; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - capable; सः (saḥ) - he; मनुजः (manujaḥ) - man; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; त्रिवर्गं (trivargam) - the three aims of life; परिरक्षितुम् (parirakṣitum) - to protect;]
(Who indeed is able to forgive anger arisen for a reason, he is not capable, that man, to properly protect the three aims of life.)
A man who cannot forgive anger that has arisen for a reason is not truly capable of properly safeguarding the three aims of life.
अशिष्टानां नियन्ता हि शिष्टानां परिरक्षता। स्थाने रोषः प्रयुक्तः स्यान्नृपैः स्वर्गजिगीषुभिः ॥१-१७१-४॥
aśiṣṭānāṃ niyantā hi śiṣṭānāṃ parirakṣatā। sthāne roṣaḥ prayuktaḥ syān nṛpaiḥ svargajigīṣubhiḥ॥1-171-4॥
[अशिष्टानाम् (aśiṣṭānām) - of the undisciplined; नियन्ता (niyantā) - restrainer; हि (hi) - indeed; शिष्टानाम् (śiṣṭānām) - of the disciplined; परिरक्षता (parirakṣatā) - protector; स्थाने (sthāne) - in the proper place; रोषः (roṣaḥ) - anger; प्रयुक्तः (prayuktaḥ) - applied; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings; स्वर्गजिगीषुभिः (svargajigīṣubhiḥ) - by those desiring heaven;]
(Of the undisciplined, the restrainer indeed; of the disciplined, the protector. In the proper place, anger applied should be by kings desiring heaven.)
A king who desires heaven should restrain the undisciplined and protect the disciplined; anger should be used by such kings only in the proper situation.
अश्रौषमहमूरुस्थो गर्भशय्यागतस्तदा। आरावं मातृवर्गस्य भृगूणां क्षत्रियैर्वधे ॥१-१७१-५॥
aśrauṣam aham ūrustho garbhaśayyāgatastadā। ārāvaṃ mātṛvargasya bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyairvadhe ॥1-171-5॥
[अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; अहम् (aham) - I; ऊरुस्थः (ūrusthaḥ) - standing on the thigh; गर्भशय्या-गतः (garbhaśayyā-gataḥ) - having gone to the womb-bed; तदा (tadā) - then; आरावम् (ārāvam) - cry, wailing; मातृवर्गस्य (mātṛvargasya) - of the group of mothers; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; क्षत्रियैः (kṣatriyaiḥ) - by the Kṣatriyas; वधे (vadhe) - in the slaughter;]
(I heard, I, standing on the thigh, having gone to the womb-bed, then, the cry of the group of mothers of the Bhṛgus, in the slaughter by the Kṣatriyas.)
Then, while I was in the womb, standing on the thigh, I heard the wailing of the Bhṛgu mothers during the slaughter by the Kṣatriyas.
सामरैर्हि यदा लोकैर्भृगूणां क्षत्रियाधमैः। आगर्भोत्सादनं क्षान्तं तदा मां मन्युराविषत् ॥१-१७१-६॥
sāmarair hi yadā lokair bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyādhamaiḥ। āgarbhotsādanaṃ kṣāntaṃ tadā māṃ manyur āviṣat॥1-171-6॥
[सामरैः (sāmaraiḥ) - with enemies; (sa-amaraiḥ: with enemies) हि (hi) - indeed; यदा (yadā) - when; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - by people; भृगूणां (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; क्षत्रियाधमैः (kṣatriyādhamaiḥ) - by the lowest of Kṣatriyas; आगर्भोत्सादनं (āgarbhotsādanam) - destruction even of those in the womb; क्षान्तं (kṣāntam) - was tolerated; तदा (tadā) - then; माम् (mām) - me; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; आविषत् (āviṣat) - entered;]
(Indeed, when the destruction even of those in the womb of the Bhṛgus was tolerated by the lowest of Kṣatriyas along with enemies, then anger entered me.)
When the lowest of the Kṣatriyas, together with their enemies, destroyed even those in the womb of the Bhṛgus and this was tolerated, then anger arose in me.
आपूर्णकोशाः किल मे मातरः पितरस्तथा। भयात्सर्वेषु लोकेषु नाधिजग्मुः परायणम् ॥१-१७१-७॥
āpūrṇakośāḥ kila me mātaraḥ pitaras tathā। bhayāt sarveṣu lokeṣu nādhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam ॥1-171-7॥
[आपूर्णकोशाः (āpūrṇakośāḥ) - with unfilled stores; किल (kila) - indeed; मे (me) - my; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - fathers; तथा (tathā) - also; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; न (na) - not; अधिजग्मुः (adhijagmuḥ) - attained; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - refuge;]
(With unfilled stores indeed my mothers and fathers also, from fear, in all worlds, did not attain refuge.)
Because their stores were unfilled, my mothers and fathers, out of fear, did not find refuge in any of the worlds.
तान्भृगूणां तदा दारान्कश्चिन्नाभ्यवपद्यत। यदा तदा दधारेयमूरुणैकेन मां शुभा ॥१-१७१-८॥
tānbhṛgūṇāṃ tadā dārān kaścin nābhyavapadyata | yadā tadā dadhāreyam ūruṇāikena māṃ śubhā ||1-171-8||
[तान् (tān) - them; (accusative plural) भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; (genitive plural) तदा (tadā) - then; दारान् (dārān) - wives; (accusative plural) कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; न (na) - not; अभ्यवपद्यत (abhyavapadyata) - approached; (from abhi-ava-pad, to approach) यदा (yadā) - when; तदा (tadā) - then; दधारे (dadhāre) - held; (from dhṛ, to hold) इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine singular); ऊरुणा (ūruṇā) - by the thigh; एकेन (ekena) - with one; माम् (mām) - me; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious one; (feminine singular nominative);]
(Then, none of the Bhṛgus approached their wives. When (the time came), this auspicious one held me with one thigh.)
At that time, none among the Bhṛgus approached their wives. When the time came, this auspicious lady held me with one thigh.
प्रतिषेद्धा हि पापस्य यदा लोकेषु विद्यते। तदा सर्वेषु लोकेषु पापकृन्नोपपद्यते ॥१-१७१-९॥
pratiṣeddhā hi pāpasya yadā lokeṣu vidyate। tadā sarveṣu lokeṣu pāpakṛnnopapadyate ॥1-171-9॥
[प्रतिषेद्धा (pratiṣeddhā) - restrainer; (one who restrains; हि (hi) - indeed; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of evil; यदा (yadā) - when; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - evil-doer; न (na) - not; उपपद्यते (upapadyate) - arises;]
(Restrainer indeed of evil when in the worlds exists; then in all worlds evil-doer not arises.)
When a restrainer of evil exists in the worlds, then in all worlds, an evil-doer does not arise.
यदा तु प्रतिषेद्धारं पापो न लभते क्वचित्। तिष्ठन्ति बहवो लोके तदा पापेषु कर्मसु ॥१-१७१-१०॥
yadā tu pratiṣeddhāraṃ pāpo na labhate kvacit। tiṣṭhanti bahavo loke tadā pāpeṣu karmasu ॥1-171-10॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; प्रतिषेद्धारं (pratiṣeddhāram) - one who restrains; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sin; न (na) - not; लभते (labhate) - obtains; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - remain; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; लोके (loke) - in the world; तदा (tadā) - then; पापेषु (pāpeṣu) - in sinful; कर्मसु (karmasu) - actions;]
(When, but, one who restrains, sin, not, obtains, anywhere, remain, many, in the world, then, in sinful, actions.)
But when sin does not find anyone to restrain it anywhere, then many people in the world remain engaged in sinful actions.
जानन्नपि च यः पापं शक्तिमान्न नियच्छति। ईशः सन्सोऽपि तेनैव कर्मणा सम्प्रयुज्यते ॥१-१७१-११॥
jānannapi ca yaḥ pāpaṃ śaktimān na niyacchati। īśaḥ san saḥ api tena eva karmaṇā samprayujyate ॥1-171-11॥
[जानन् (jānan) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; पापं (pāpaṃ) - evil; शक्तिमान् (śaktimān) - capable; न (na) - not; नियच्छति (niyacchati) - restrains; ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; सन् (san) - being; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - even; तेन (tena) - by that; एव (eva) - only; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the action; सम्प्रयुज्यते (samprayujyate) - is associated; ॥१-१७१-११॥ (॥1-171-11॥) - ;]
(Knowing even and who evil capable not restrains. Lord being he even by that only by the action is associated.)
Even one who knows and is capable, if he does not restrain evil, though being a lord, he too becomes associated with that very action.
राजभिश्चेश्वरैश्चैव यदि वै पितरो मम। शक्तैर्न शकिता त्रातुमिष्टं मत्वेह जीवितम् ॥१-१७१-१२॥
rājabhiś ceśvaraiś caiva yadi vai pitaro mama। śaktair na śakitā trātum iṣṭaṃ matv eha jīvitam॥1-171-12॥
[राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; च (ca) - and; ईश्वरैः (īśvaraiḥ) - by lords; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - truly; पितरः (pitarāḥ) - fathers; मम (mama) - my; शक्तैः (śaktaiḥ) - by the capable; न (na) - not; शकिता (śakitā) - able; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; इह (iha) - here; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(By kings and by lords indeed, if truly my fathers, by the capable, not able to protect, desired, having considered, here, life.)
If even kings and lords, and indeed my own capable fathers, are not able to protect me, then considering this, I do not desire life here.
अत एषामहं क्रुद्धो लोकानामीश्वरोऽद्य सन्। भवतां तु वचो नाहमलं समतिवर्तितुम् ॥१-१७१-१३॥
ata eṣām ahaṃ kruddho lokānām īśvaro 'dya san। bhavatāṃ tu vaco nāham alaṃ samativartitum ॥1-171-13॥
[अत (ata) - therefore; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अहम् (aham) - I; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; अद्य (adya) - today; सन् (san) - being; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; तु (tu) - but; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अलम् (alam) - able; समतिवर्तितुम् (samativartitum) - to overstep;]
(Therefore, of these, I, angry, being the lord of the worlds today, but of you, word, not I, able to overstep.)
Therefore, being angry and the lord of the worlds today, I am not able to disregard your word.
मम चापि भवेदेतदीश्वरस्य सतो महत्। उपेक्षमाणस्य पुनर्लोकानां किल्बिषाद्भयम् ॥१-१७१-१४॥
mama cāpi bhaved etad īśvarasya sataḥ mahat। upekṣamāṇasya punar lokānāṃ kilbiṣād bhayam ॥1-171-14॥
[मम (mama) - of me; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; एतत् (etat) - this; ईश्वरस्य (īśvarasya) - of the lord; सतः (sataḥ) - of the true/existing; महत् (mahat) - great; उपेक्षमाणस्य (upekṣamāṇasya) - of the one neglecting; पुनः (punar) - again; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - from sin; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Of me and also this would be a great (fault) of the true lord; for the one neglecting again, there is fear for the worlds from sin.)
For me too, this would be a great fault of the true Lord; if He neglects again, there will be fear for the worlds due to sin.
यश्चायं मन्युजो मेऽग्निर्लोकानादातुमिच्छति। दहेदेष च मामेव निगृहीतः स्वतेजसा ॥१-१७१-१५॥
yaś cāyaṃ manyujo me'gnir lokān ādātum icchati। dahed eṣa ca mām eva nigṛhītaḥ svatejasā ॥1-171-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; मन्युजः (manyujaḥ) - born of wrath; मे (me) - my; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; दहेत् (dahet) - may burn; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; निगृहीतः (nigṛhītaḥ) - restrained; स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - by his own brilliance;]
(Who and this fire born of wrath, my, desires to take the worlds. May this also burn me only, restrained by his own brilliance.)
This fire, born of my wrath, desires to consume the worlds. But let it burn me alone, for it is restrained by its own brilliance.
भवतां च विजानामि सर्वलोकहितेप्सुताम्। तस्माद्विदध्वं यच्छ्रेयो लोकानां मम चेश्वराः ॥१-१७१-१६॥
bhavatāṃ ca vijānāmi sarvalokahitepsutām। tasmādvidadhvaṃ yacchreyo lokānāṃ mama ceśvarāḥ ॥1-171-16॥
[भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; (plural, respectful) च (ca) - and; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; सर्वलोक (sarvaloka) - all worlds; हित (hita) - welfare; इप्सुताम् (ipsutām) - desire; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; विदध्वम् (vidadhvam) - do; यत् (yat) - that which; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; welfare; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; मम (mama) - of me; my; च (ca) - and; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - O lords;]
(And I know your desire for the welfare of all worlds. Therefore, O lords, do that which is good for the worlds and for me.)
I am aware of your wish for the welfare of all beings. Therefore, O lords, do what is best for the worlds and for me.
पितर ऊचुः॥
pitara ūcuḥ॥
[पितर (pitara) - fathers; ancestors; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; spoke;]
(Fathers said;)
The fathers said.
य एष मन्युजस्तेऽग्निर्लोकानादातुमिच्छति। अप्सु तं मुञ्च भद्रं ते लोका ह्यप्सु प्रतिष्ठिताः ॥१-१७१-१७॥
ya eṣa manyujaste'gnirlokānādātumicchati। apsu taṃ muñca bhadraṃ te lokā hyapsu pratiṣṭhitāḥ ॥1-171-17॥
[य (ya) - who; एष (eṣa) - this; मन्युजः (manyujaḥ) - born of anger; ते (te) - your; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; तं (taṃ) - him; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspicious; ते (te) - your; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; हि (hi) - indeed; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; प्रतिष्ठिताः (pratiṣṭhitāḥ) - established;]
(Whoever this, born of anger, your fire, desires to take away the worlds. In the waters release him; auspicious are your worlds, for indeed they are established in the waters.)
This fire, born of your anger, who wishes to consume the worlds—release him into the waters. Your worlds are auspicious, for they are indeed established in the waters.
आपोमयाः सर्वरसाः सर्वमापोमयं जगत्। तस्मादप्सु विमुञ्चेमं क्रोधाग्निं द्विजसत्तम ॥१-१७१-१८॥
āpomayāḥ sarvarasāḥ sarvam āpomayaṃ jagat। tasmād apsu vimuñcemaṃ krodhāgniṃ dvijasattama ॥1-171-18॥
[आपोमयाः (āpomayāḥ) - consisting of water; सर्वरसाः (sarvarasāḥ) - all essences; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आपोमयम् (āpomayam) - composed of water; जगत् (jagat) - world; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अप्सु (apsu) - in water; विमुञ्च (vimuñca) - release; इमम् (imam) - this; क्रोधाग्निम् (krodhāgniṃ) - fire of anger; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(Consisting of water, all essences, all the world is composed of water. Therefore, O best of the twice-born, release this fire of anger in water.)
All essences are of water; the entire world is composed of water. Therefore, O best of the twice-born, let go of this fire of anger into water.
अयं तिष्ठतु ते विप्र यदीच्छसि महोदधौ। मन्युजोऽग्निर्दहन्नापो लोका ह्यापोमयाः स्मृताः ॥१-१७१-१९॥
ayaṃ tiṣṭhatu te vipra yadīcchasi mahodadhau। manyujo'gnirdahannāpo lokā hyāpomayāḥ smṛtāḥ ॥1-171-19॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; तिष्ठतु (tiṣṭhatu) - let remain; ते (te) - for you; विप्र (vipra) - Brāhmaṇa; यदि (yadi) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; महोदधौ (mahodadhau) - in the great ocean; मन्युजः (manyujaḥ) - born of anger; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; दहन् (dahan) - burning; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; हि (hi) - indeed; आपोमयाः (āpomayāḥ) - consisting of water; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are considered;]
(This let remain for you, Brāhmaṇa, if you desire in the great ocean. Fire born of anger, burning, (the) waters, (the) worlds indeed are considered consisting of water.)
Let this remain for you, Brāhmaṇa, if you wish, in the great ocean. The fire born of anger, burning the waters, for the worlds are indeed considered to be made of water.
एवं प्रतिज्ञा सत्येयं तवानघ भविष्यति। न चैव सामरा लोका गमिष्यन्ति पराभवम् ॥१-१७१-२०॥
evaṃ pratijñā satyeyaṃ tavānagha bhaviṣyati। na caiva sāmarā lokā gamiṣyanti parābhavam ॥1-171-20॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रतिज्ञा (pratijñā) - vow; सत्येयं (satyeyaṃ) - true this; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सामरा (sāmarā) - with the Maruts (gods); लोका (lokā) - worlds; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - to defeat;]
(Thus this vow of yours, O sinless one, will be true. And indeed, the worlds with the Maruts will not go to defeat.)
Thus, O sinless one, your vow will truly be fulfilled. The worlds, along with the Maruts, will not suffer defeat.
वसिष्ठ उवाच॥

(Vasiṣṭha said;)
Vasiṣṭha said.
ततस्तं क्रोधजं तात और्वोऽग्निं वरुणालये। उत्ससर्ज स चैवाप उपयुङ्क्ते महोदधौ ॥१-१७१-२१॥
tatastaṃ krodhajaṃ tāta aurvo'gniṃ varuṇālaye। utsasarja sa caivāpa upayuṅkte mahodadhau ॥1-171-21॥

(Then Aurva, O dear one, released that fire born of anger in the abode of Varuṇa; and he indeed entered the water in the great ocean.)

महद्धयशिरो भूत्वा यत्तद्वेदविदो विदुः। तमग्निमुद्गिरन्वक्त्रात्पिबत्यापो महोदधौ ॥१-१७१-२२॥
mahaddhayaśiro bhūtvā yat tad vedavido viduḥ। tam agnim udgiran vaktrāt pibaty āpo mahodadhau ॥1-171-22॥
[महत् (mahat) - great; धयशिरः (dhayaśiraḥ) - having the head of a horse; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; तम् (tam) - him; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; उद्गिरन् (udgiran) - uttering; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from the mouth; पिबति (pibati) - drinks; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; महोदधौ (mahodadhau) - in the great ocean;]
(Having become (assuming) the great horse-headed (form), which the knowers of the Veda know, him, uttering fire from the mouth, drinks the waters in the great ocean.)

(Therefore, you also, welfare to you, ought not to kill the worlds, Parāśara, knowing the duties of others, O best of the wise.)
Therefore, O Parāśara, you too, for your own welfare, should not destroy people, knowing the duties of others, O best among the wise.
