राजन्निःसंशयं श्रेयो वाच्यस्त्वमसि बान्धवैः। न त्वशुश्रूषमाणेषु वाक्यं सम्प्रतितिष्ठति ॥१-१९७-१॥
rājan niḥsaṃśayaṃ śreyo vācyas tvam asi bāndhavaiḥ। na tvaśuśrūṣamāṇeṣu vākyaṃ sampratitiṣṭhati ॥1-197-1॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; निःसंशयम् (niḥsaṃśayam) - without doubt; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - to be said; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - by relatives; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अशुश्रूषमाणेषु (aśuśrūṣamāṇeṣu) - in those not listening; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; सम्प्रतितिष्ठति (sampratitiṣṭhati) - firmly abides;]
(O king, without doubt, you are to be called better by the relatives; but the word does not firmly abide in those not listening.)
O king, without doubt, you are considered superior by your relatives; however, words do not take root among those who do not listen.
हितं हि तव तद्वाक्यमुक्तवान्कुरुसत्तमः। भीष्मः शान्तनवो राजन्प्रतिगृह्णासि तन्न च ॥१-१९७-२॥

(Indeed, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, O king, the best of the Kurus, has spoken that speech which is beneficial to you, but you do not accept that.)
O king, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu and the best of the Kurus, has indeed spoken words that are beneficial to you, but you do not accept them.
तथा द्रोणेन बहुधा भाषितं हितमुत्तमम्। तच्च राधासुतः कर्णो मन्यते न हितं तव ॥१-१९७-३॥
tathā droṇena bahudhā bhāṣitaṃ hitam uttamam। tac ca rādhāsutaḥ karṇo manyate na hitaṃ tava॥1-197-3॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; भाषितं (bhāṣitam) - spoken; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; राधासुतः (rādhāsutaḥ) - son of Radha; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; न (na) - not; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Thus, by Droṇa, in many ways, spoken, beneficial, excellent; that and the son of Radha, Karṇa, considers not beneficial for you.)
Thus, although Droṇa has spoken many excellent and beneficial things, Karṇa, the son of Radha, does not consider them beneficial for you.
चिन्तयंश्च न पश्यामि राजंस्तव सुहृत्तमम्। आभ्यां पुरुषसिंहाभ्यां यो वा स्यात्प्रज्ञयाधिकः ॥१-१९७-४॥
cintayaṃś ca na paśyāmi rājaṃs tava suhṛttamam। ābhyāṃ puruṣasiṃhābhyāṃ yo vā syāt prajñayādhikaḥ ॥1-197-4॥
[चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तव (tava) - your; सुहृत्तमम् (suhṛttamam) - best friend; आभ्यां (ābhyām) - than these two; पुरुषसिंहाभ्यां (puruṣasiṃhābhyām) - lion among men (dual); यः (yaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - in wisdom; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - superior;]
(Thinking and not do I see, O king, your best friend, than these two lions among men, who or may be in wisdom superior.)
O king, while thinking, I do not see your best friend who may be superior in wisdom to these two lions among men.
इमौ हि वृद्धौ वयसा प्रज्ञया च श्रुतेन च। समौ च त्वयि राजेन्द्र तेषु पाण्डुसुतेषु च ॥१-१९७-५॥
imau hi vṛddhau vayasā prajñayā ca śrutena ca। samau ca tvayi rājendra teṣu pāṇḍusutēṣu ca ॥1-197-5॥
[इमौ (imau) - these two; हि (hi) - indeed; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - aged; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - by wisdom; च (ca) - and; श्रुतेन (śrutena) - by learning; च (ca) - and; समौ (samau) - equal; च (ca) - and; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; पाण्डुसुतेषु (pāṇḍusutēṣu) - in the sons of Pāṇḍu; च (ca) - and;]
(These two indeed are aged by age, by wisdom, and by learning; and equal are you, O king, and in those sons of Pāṇḍu.)
These two are indeed aged in years, wisdom, and learning; you, O king, and the sons of Pāṇḍu are equal in these respects.
धर्मे चानवमौ राजन्सत्यतायां च भारत। रामाद्दाशरथेश्चैव गयाच्चैव न संशयः ॥१-१९७-६॥
dharme cānavamau rājan satyatāyāṃ ca bhārata। rāmād dāśaratheś caiva gayāc caiva na saṃśayaḥ ॥1-197-6॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; च (ca) - and; अनवमौ (anavamau) - not inferior; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सत्यतायां (satyatāyām) - in truthfulness; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; रामात् (rāmāt) - from Rāma; दाशरथेः (dāśaratheḥ) - from Daśarathi (son of Daśaratha); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गयात् (gayāt) - from Gaya; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In dharma and not inferior, O king, and in truthfulness, O descendant of Bharata, from Rāma, from Daśarathi, and indeed from Gaya, and indeed, there is no doubt.)
O Bharata, in dharma and truthfulness, there is no one inferior to Rāma, son of Daśaratha, or to Gaya; of this, O king, there is no doubt.
न चोक्तवन्तावश्रेयः पुरस्तादपि किञ्चन। न चाप्यपकृतं किञ्चिदनयोर्लक्ष्यते त्वयि ॥१-१९७-७॥
na coktavantāvaśreyaḥ purastādapi kiñcana। na cāpyapakṛtaṃ kiñcidanayorlakṣyate tvayi ॥1-197-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उक्तवन्तौ (uktavantau) - the two who have spoken; अवश्रेयः (avaśreyaḥ) - unworthy; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; अपि (api) - even; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपकृतम् (apakṛtam) - wrong done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अनयोः (anayoḥ) - of these two; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is observed; त्वयि (tvayi) - by you;]
(And nothing unworthy was spoken by the two before, nor is any wrong done by these two observed by you.)
Neither of the two has spoken anything unworthy before, nor do you observe any wrong done by either of them.
ताविमौ पुरुषव्याघ्रावनागसि नृप त्वयि। न मन्त्रयेतां त्वच्छ्रेयः कथं सत्यपराक्रमौ ॥१-१९७-८॥
tāvimau puruṣavyāghrāvanāgasi nṛpa tvayi। na mantrayetāṃ tvacchreyaḥ kathaṃ satyaparākramau ॥1-197-8॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; इमौ (imau) - these; पुरुषव्याघ्रौ (puruṣavyāghrau) - tiger among men; अनागसि (anāgasi) - blameless; नृप (nṛpa) - king; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; न (na) - not; मन्त्रयेताम् (mantrayetām) - should consult; त्वत्-श्रेयः (tvat-śreyaḥ) - your welfare; कथम् (katham) - how; सत्य-पराक्रमौ (satya-parākramau) - truly valiant;]
(Those two, these tigers among men, O blameless king, in you, should not consult about your welfare, how (could they be) truly valiant?)
O blameless king, if those two tigers among men do not consult with you about your welfare, how can they be truly valiant?
प्रज्ञावन्तौ नरश्रेष्ठावस्मिँल्लोके नराधिप। त्वन्निमित्तमतो नेमौ किञ्चिज्जिह्मं वदिष्यतः ॥ इति मे नैष्ठिकी बुद्धिर्वर्तते कुरुनन्दन ॥१-१९७-९॥
prajñāvantau naraśreṣṭhāvasmiṃlloke narādhipa। tvannimittamato nemau kiñcijjihmaṃ vadiṣyataḥ ॥ iti me naiṣṭhikī buddhirvartate kurunandana ॥1-197-9॥
[प्रज्ञावन्तौ (prajñāvantau) - possessing wisdom; (dual); नरश्रेष्ठौ (naraśreṣṭhau) - best among men; (dual); अस्मिँल्लोके (asmiṃlloke) - in this world; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; त्वन्निमित्तम् (tvannimittam) - for your sake; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; इमौ (imau) - these two; (dual); किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; जिह्मम् (jihmam) - crooked; deceitful; वदिष्यतः (vadiṣyataḥ) - will speak; (dual); इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; नैष्ठिकी (naiṣṭhikī) - firm; resolute; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - conviction; understanding; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(Possessing wisdom, best among men, in this world, O king, for your sake, therefore, not, these two, even a little, crooked, will speak. Thus, my firm conviction exists, O delight of the Kurus.)
O king, these two best among men, who are wise, will not speak even a little crookedly in this world for your sake. Thus, O delight of the Kurus, this is my firm conviction.
न चार्थहेतोर्धर्मज्ञौ वक्ष्यतः पक्षसंश्रितम्। एतद्धि परमं श्रेयो मेनाते तव भारत ॥१-१९७-१०॥
na cārthahetordharmajñau vakṣyataḥ pakṣasaṃśritam। etaddhi paramaṃ śreyo menāte tava bhārata ॥1-197-10॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्थहेतोः (arthahetoḥ) - for the sake of gain; धर्मज्ञौ (dharmajñau) - knowers of dharma; वक्ष्यतः (vakṣyataḥ) - will speak; पक्षसंश्रितम् (pakṣasaṃśritam) - taking sides; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; मे (me) - to me; न (na) - not; अते (ate) - from you; तव (tava) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Not for the sake of gain do the knowers of dharma speak taking sides. This indeed is the supreme good to me, not from you, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the knowers of dharma do not speak taking sides for the sake of gain. Indeed, this is the highest good for me, not from you.
दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः पुत्रा राजन्यथा तव। तथैव पाण्डवेयास्ते पुत्रा राजन्न संशयः ॥१-१९७-११॥
duryodhanaprabhṛtayaḥ putrā rājanyathā tava। tathaiva pāṇḍaveyāste putrā rājanna saṃśayaḥ ॥1-197-11॥
[दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः (duryodhanaprabhṛtayaḥ) - beginning with Duryodhana; etc.; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - just as; तव (tava) - your; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पाण्डवेयाः (pāṇḍaveyāḥ) - the sons of Pandu; ते (te) - they; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Beginning with Duryodhana, the sons, O king, just as yours; in the same way, the sons of Pandu, they are sons, O king, not doubt.)
O king, just as your sons, beginning with Duryodhana, so too are the sons of Pandu—there is no doubt about it.
तेषु चेदहितं किञ्चिन्मन्त्रयेयुरबुद्धितः। मन्त्रिणस्ते न ते श्रेयः प्रपश्यन्ति विशेषतः ॥१-१९७-१२॥
teṣu ced ahitaṃ kiñcin mantrayeyur abuddhitaḥ। mantriṇas te na te śreyaḥ prapaśyanti viśeṣataḥ॥1-197-12॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - among them; चेत् (ced) - if; अहितम् (ahitam) - harmful; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; मन्त्रयेयुः (mantrayeyuḥ) - they might deliberate; अबुद्धितः (abuddhitaḥ) - without wisdom; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - counselors; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; प्रपश्यन्ति (prapaśyanti) - perceive; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Among them, if anything harmful they might deliberate without wisdom, those counselors—they do not perceive good, especially.)
If among them the counselors, lacking wisdom, deliberate on anything harmful, then they especially do not perceive what is truly beneficial.
अथ ते हृदये राजन्विशेषस्तेषु वर्तते। अन्तरस्थं विवृण्वानाः श्रेयः कुर्युर्न ते ध्रुवम् ॥१-१९७-१३॥
atha te hṛdaye rājan viśeṣas teṣu vartate। antarsthaṃ vivṛṇvānāḥ śreyaḥ kuryur na te dhruvam ॥1-197-13॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; ते (te) - your; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (the) heart; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; specialness; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; abides; अन्तरस्थम् (antarstham) - internally placed; within; विवृण्वानाः (vivṛṇvānāḥ) - those who discern; those who reveal; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the better; the good; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - may do; may perform; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; surely;]
(Now, O king, in your heart, a distinction exists among those. Those who discern what is internally placed may perform the better, but not certainly for you.)
Now, O king, in your heart, there is a special distinction among them. Those who discern what is within may do what is better, but it is not certain for you.
एतदर्थमिमौ राजन्महात्मानौ महाद्युती। नोचतुर्विवृतं किञ्चिन्न ह्येष तव निश्चयः ॥१-१९७-१४॥
etadartham-imau rājan-mahātmānau mahādyutī। nocaturvivṛtaṃ kiñcinna hy eṣa tava niścayaḥ ॥1-197-14॥
[एतदर्थम् (etadartham) - for this purpose; इमौ (imau) - these two; राजन् (rājan) - O king; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great-souled; महाद्युती (mahādyutī) - of great splendor; न (na) - not; उचतुर्विवृतम् (ucaturvivṛtam) - anything openly declared; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; तव (tava) - your; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - decision;]
(For this purpose, these two, O king, great-souled, of great splendor, have not openly declared anything; indeed, this is not your decision.)

यच्चाप्यशक्यतां तेषामाहतुः पुरुषर्षभौ। तत्तथा पुरुषव्याघ्र तव तद्भद्रमस्तु ते ॥१-१९७-१५॥
yaccāpy aśakyatāṃ teṣām āhatuḥ puruṣarṣabhau। tat tathā puruṣavyāghra tava tad bhadram astu te ॥1-197-15॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अशक्यता (aśakyatāṃ) - impossibility; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; आहतुः (āhatuḥ) - of striking; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - bulls among men; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; तव (tava) - your; तत् (tat) - that; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - to you;]
(Which also the impossibility of striking of them, O bulls among men, that thus, O tiger among men, your that welfare let it be to you.)

कथं हि पाण्डवः श्रीमान्सव्यसाची परन्तपः। शक्यो विजेतुं सङ्ग्रामे राजन्मघवता अपि ॥
kathaṁ hi pāṇḍavaḥ śrīmān savyasācī parantapaḥ। śakyo vijetuṁ saṅgrāme rājan maghavatā api॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - ambidextrous; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - capable (to be); विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to be conquered; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Maghavat (Indra); अपि (api) - even;]
(How indeed the son of Pāṇḍu, prosperous, ambidextrous, scorcher of foes, is capable to be conquered in battle, O king, even by Maghavat (Indra)?)
O king, how indeed can the prosperous, ambidextrous son of Pāṇḍu, the scorcher of foes, be conquered in battle, even by Maghavat (Indra)?
भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्नागायुतबलो महान्। कथं हि युधि शक्येत विजेतुममरैरपि ॥१-१९७-१७॥
bhīmaseno mahābāhur nāgāyutabalo mahān। kathaṃ hi yudhi śakyeta vijetum amarair api ॥1-197-17॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; (name of a hero); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; (having great arms); नागायुतबलः (nāgāyutabalaḥ) - having the strength of ten thousand elephants; (nāga = elephant, ayuta = ten thousand, bala = strength); महान् (mahān) - great; कथम् (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शक्येत (śakyeta) - could be possible; (might be able); विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; (to defeat); अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - by the immortals; (by the gods); अपि (api) - even;]
(Bhīmasena, mighty-armed, having the strength of ten thousand elephants, great. How indeed in battle could he be conquered even by the immortals?)
How could Bhīmasena, the mighty-armed and great hero with the strength of ten thousand elephants, possibly be defeated in battle, even by the gods themselves?
तथैव कृतिनौ युद्धे यमौ यमसुताविव। कथं विषहितुं शक्यौ रणे जीवितुमिच्छता ॥१-१९७-१८॥
tathaiva kṛtinau yuddhe yamau yamasutāviva। kathaṃ viṣahituṃ śakyau raṇe jīvitumicchatā ॥1-197-18॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; thus; कृतिनौ (kṛtinau) - the two accomplished ones; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamas; यमसुताविव (yamasutāviva) - like the sons of Yama; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; विषहितुं (viṣahituṃ) - to withstand; शक्यौ (śakyau) - are able; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring;]
(In the same way, the two accomplished ones in battle, like the two Yamas, how are they able to withstand (and) to live in battle, desiring (to do so)?)
Just so, the two accomplished warriors in battle, like the sons of Yama, how could they possibly withstand and survive in battle, wishing to live?
यस्मिन्धृतिरनुक्रोशः क्षमा सत्यं पराक्रमः। नित्यानि पाण्डवश्रेष्ठे स जीयेत कथं रणे ॥१-१९७-१९॥
yasmin dhṛtir anukrośaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ parākramaḥ। nityāni pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhe sa jīyeta kathaṃ raṇe ॥1-197-19॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; अनुक्रोशः (anukrośaḥ) - compassion; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valor; नित्यानि (nityāni) - are always; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठे (pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhe) - in the best of the Pāṇḍavas; सः (saḥ) - he; जीयेत (jīyeta) - would be conquered; कथम् (katham) - how; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(In whom steadfastness, compassion, forbearance, truth, and valor are always present, in the best of the Pāṇḍavas—how could he be conquered in battle?)
How could one in whom steadfastness, compassion, forbearance, truth, and valor are always present, especially in the best of the Pāṇḍavas, ever be conquered in battle?
येषां पक्षधरो रामो येषां मन्त्री जनार्दनः। किं नु तैरजितं सङ्ख्ये येषां पक्षे च सात्यकिः ॥१-१९७-२०॥
yeṣāṃ pakṣadharo rāmo yeṣāṃ mantrī janārdanaḥ। kiṃ nu tair ajitaṃ saṅkhye yeṣāṃ pakṣe ca sātyakiḥ ॥1-197-20॥

(Of whom Rāma is the supporter, of whom Janārdana is the counselor, what indeed is unconquered in battle by them, on whose side also is Sātyaki?)
How can anything remain unconquered in battle by those on whose side are Rāma as supporter, Janārdana as counselor, and Sātyaki as well?
द्रुपदः श्वशुरो येषां येषां श्यालाश्च पार्षताः। धृष्टद्युम्नमुखा वीरा भ्रातरो द्रुपदात्मजाः ॥१-१९७-२१॥
