शृणु मे विस्तरेणेममितिहासं पुरातनम् । भ्रातृभीः सहितः पार्थ यथावृत्तं युधिष्ठिर ॥१-२०१-१॥

महासुरस्यान्ववाये हिरण्यकशिपोः पुरा । निकुम्भो नाम दैत्येन्द्रस्तेजस्वी बलवानभूत् ॥१-२०१-२॥
mahāsurasyānvavāye hiraṇyakaśipoḥ purā । nikumbho nāma daityendrastejasvī balavānabhūt ॥1-201-2॥

Once, in the lineage of the great asura Hiraṇyakaśipu, there was a powerful and strong lord of the Daityas named Nikumbha.
तस्य पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जातौ भीमपराक्रमौ । सहान्योन्येन भुञ्जाते विनान्योन्यं न गच्छतः ॥१-२०१-३॥
tasya putrau mahāvīryau jātau bhīmaparākramau । sahānyonyena bhuñjāte vinānyonyaṃ na gacchataḥ ॥1-201-3॥

He had two sons of great strength and terrible prowess. They always acted together, enjoying things together and never going anywhere without each other.
अन्योन्यस्य प्रियकरावन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदौ । एकशीलसमाचारौ द्विधैवैकं यथा कृतौ ॥१-२०१-४॥
anyonyasya priyakarāv anyonyasya priyaṃvadau । ekaśīlasamācārau dvidhaivaikaṃ yathā kṛtau ॥1-201-4॥
[अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of each other; प्रियकरौ (priyakarau) - doing what is dear; अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of each other; प्रियंवदौ (priyaṃvadau) - speaking what is dear; एकशीलसमाचारौ (ekaśīlasamācārau) - having the same character and conduct; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two forms; एव (eva) - indeed; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; यथा (yathā) - as; कृतौ (kṛtau) - created; ॥१-२०१-४॥ (॥1-201-4॥) - ;]
(Of each other, doing what is dear; of each other, speaking what is dear; having the same character and conduct, indeed one in two forms, as if created as one.)
They did what was dear to each other, spoke what was pleasing to each other, and, having the same character and conduct, were as if one being in two forms, as if created as one.
तौ विवृद्धौ महावीर्यौ कार्येष्वप्येकनिश्चयौ । त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय समास्थायैकनिश्चयम् ॥१-२०१-५॥
tau vivṛddhau mahāvīryau kāryeṣvapyekaniscayau । trailokyavijayārthāya samāsthāyaikaniscayam ॥1-201-5॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; विवृद्धौ (vivṛddhau) - grown; महावीर्यौ (mahāvīryau) - of great strength; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in actions; अपि (api) - also; एकनिश्चयौ (ekaniscayau) - of one resolve; त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय (trailokyavijayārthāya) - for the purpose of conquering the three worlds; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having undertaken; एकनिश्चयम् (ekaniscayam) - one resolve;]
(Those two, grown, of great strength, in actions also of one resolve, for the purpose of conquering the three worlds, having undertaken one resolve.)
Those two, who had grown in strength and were of great might, were united in their resolve even in action. Having undertaken a single determination for the conquest of the three worlds, they acted with one purpose.
कृत्वा दीक्षां गतौ विन्ध्यं तत्रोग्रं तेपतुस्तपः । तौ तु दीर्घेण कालेन तपोयुक्तौ बभूवतुः ॥१-२०१-६॥
kṛtvā dīkṣāṃ gatau vindhyaṃ tatrograṃ tepatus tapaḥ । tau tu dīrgheṇa kālena tapoyuktau babhūvatuḥ ॥1-201-6॥

(Having performed initiation, (the two) went to the Vindhya; there, (they two) practiced intense austerity. Those two, but, with long time, engaged in austerity, became.)
After performing their initiation, they went to the Vindhya mountains; there, they practiced severe austerities. Over a long period, the two became wholly devoted to austerity.
क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तौ जटावल्कलधारिणौ । मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गौ वायुभक्षौ बभूवतुः ॥१-२०१-७॥
kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntau jaṭāvalkaladhāriṇau । malopacitasarvāṅgau vāyubhakṣau babhūvatuḥ ॥1-201-7॥
[क्षुत् (kṣut) - hunger; पिपासा (pipāsā) - thirst; परिश्रान्तौ (pariśrāntau) - utterly exhausted; जटा (jaṭā) - matted hair; वल्कल (valkala) - bark garment; धारिणौ (dhāriṇau) - wearing; मल (mala) - dirt; उपचित (upacita) - covered; सर्वाङ्गौ (sarvāṅgau) - all limbs; वायु (vāyu) - wind; भक्षौ (bhakṣau) - eating; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became (dual);]
(Hunger, thirst, utterly exhausted, wearing matted hair and bark garment, covered with dirt on all limbs, eating wind, they became (both).)
They, suffering from hunger and thirst, utterly exhausted, wearing matted hair and bark garments, with all their limbs covered in dirt, subsisting on air, became thus.
आत्ममांसानि जुह्वन्तौ पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रधिष्ठितौ । ऊर्ध्वबाहू चानिमिषौ दीर्घकालं धृतव्रतौ ॥१-२०१-८॥
ātmamāṃsāni juhvantau pādāṅguṣṭhāgradhiṣṭhitau । ūrdhvabāhū cānimiṣau dīrghakālaṃ dhṛtavratau ॥1-201-8॥

(Offering their own flesh, standing upon the tips of their big toes, with arms raised and unblinking, for a long time, firm in vow.)
They offered their own flesh as oblation, standing on the tips of their big toes, with arms raised and eyes unblinking, steadfast in their vow for a long time.
तयोस्तपःप्रभावेण दीर्घकालं प्रतापितः । धूमं प्रमुमुचे विन्ध्यस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१-२०१-९॥
tayostapaḥprabhāveṇa dīrghakālaṃ pratāpitaḥ । dhūmaṃ pramumuce vindhyastadadbhutamivābhavat ॥1-201-9॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; तपः-प्रभावेण (tapaḥ-prabhāveṇa) - by the power of austerity; दीर्घ-कालम् (dīrgha-kālam) - for a long time; प्रतापितः (pratāpitaḥ) - tormented; धूमम् (dhūmam) - smoke; प्रमुमुचे (pramumuce) - emitted; विन्ध्यः (vindhyaḥ) - Vindhya (mountain); तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(By the power of the austerity of those two, tormented for a long time, Vindhya emitted smoke; that became as if wonderful.)
By the power of their austerity, Vindhya was tormented for a long time and emitted smoke; it appeared as something wonderful.
ततो देवाभवन्भीता उग्रं दृष्ट्वा तयोस्तपः । तपोविघातार्थमथो देवा विघ्नानि चक्रिरे ॥१-२०१-१०॥
tato devābhavanbhītā ugraṃ dṛṣṭvā tayostapaḥ । tapovighātārthamatho devā vighnāni cakrire ॥1-201-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; भीताः (bhītāḥ) - afraid; उग्रम् (ugram) - fierce; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तपः-विघात-अर्थम् (tapaḥ-vighāta-artham) - for the purpose of obstructing the austerity; अथ (atha) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; विघ्नानि (vighnāni) - obstacles; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - created;]
(Then the gods became afraid, having seen the fierce austerity of the two. Then, for the purpose of obstructing the austerity, the gods created obstacles.)
Then, seeing the fierce austerity of the two, the gods became afraid. Therefore, in order to hinder their austerity, the gods created obstacles.
रत्नैः प्रलोभयामासुः स्त्रीभिश्चोभौ पुनः पुनः । न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ ॥१-२०१-११॥
ratnaiḥ pralobhayāmāsuḥ strībhiś cobhau punaḥ punaḥ । na ca tau cakratur bhaṅgaṃ vratasya sumahāvratau ॥1-201-11॥
[रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; प्रलोभयामासुः (pralobhayāmāsuḥ) - they tempted; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - with women; च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; चक्रतु (cakratu) - did make; भङ्गं (bhaṅgaṃ) - violation; व्रतस्य (vratasya) - of the vow; सुमहाव्रतौ (sumahāvratau) - the two of great vow;]
(With jewels they tempted, with women also both again and again; but those two of great vow did not make violation of the vow.)
They repeatedly tempted both of them with jewels and women, but those two of great vow did not break their vow.
अथ मायां पुनर्देवास्तयोश्चक्रुर्महात्मनोः । भगिन्यो मातरो भार्यास्तयोः परिजनस्तथा ॥१-२०१-१२॥
atha māyāṃ punar devās tayoś cakrur mahātmanoḥ । bhaginyo mātaro bhāryās tayoḥ parijanas tathā ॥1-201-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; पुनः (punar) - again; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; महात्मनोः (mahātmanoḥ) - of the great souls; भगिन्यः (bhaginyaḥ) - sisters; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; भार्याः (bhāryāḥ) - wives; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; परिजनः (parijanaḥ) - attendants; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Then the gods again made illusion of those two great souls: sisters, mothers, wives, attendants of those two also.)
Then, once again, the gods created an illusion for those two great souls, manifesting as sisters, mothers, wives, and attendants for them.
परिपात्यमाना वित्रस्ताः शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा । स्रस्ताभरणकेशान्ता एकान्तभ्रष्टवाससः ॥१-२०१-१३॥
paripātyamānā vitrastāḥ śūlahastena rakṣasā । srastābharaṇakeśāntā ekāntabhraṣṭavāsasaḥ ॥1-201-13॥
[परिपात्यमाना (paripātyamānā) - being scattered around; वित्रस्ताः (vitrastāḥ) - terrified; शूलहस्तेन (śūlahastena) - by (one) holding a spear; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; स्रस्ताभरणकेशान्ता (srastābharaṇakeśāntā) - with ornaments and hair loosened; एकान्तभ्रष्टवाससः (ekāntabhraṣṭavāsasaḥ) - with garments fallen from one side;]
(Being scattered around, terrified, by the demon holding a spear, with ornaments and hair loosened, with garments fallen from one side.)

अभिधाव्य ततः सर्वास्तौ त्राहीति विचुक्रुशुः । न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ ॥१-२०१-१४॥
abhidhāvya tataḥ sarvāstau trāhīti vicukruśuḥ । na ca tau cakraturbhaṅgaṃ vratasya sumahāvratau ॥1-201-14॥
[अभिधाव्य (abhidhāvya) - having run towards; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (women); तौ (tau) - those two; त्राहीति (trāhīti) - 'save us!' (exclamation); विचुक्रुशुः (vicukruśuḥ) - cried out; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - did perform; भङ्गं (bhaṅgaṃ) - violation; व्रतस्य (vratasya) - of the vow; सुमहाव्रतौ (sumahāvratau) - of great vow;]
(Having run towards, then all (the women), crying out 'save us!', and those two did not perform violation of the vow, (being) of great vow.)
Then, having run towards them, all the women cried out 'save us!', but those two, who were of great vow, did not violate their vow.
यदा क्षोभं नोपयाति नार्तिमन्यतरस्तयोः । ततः स्त्रियस्ता भूतं च सर्वमन्तरधीयत ॥१-२०१-१५॥
yadā kṣobhaṃ nopayāti nārtim anyataras tayoḥ । tataḥ striy astā bhūtaṃ ca sarvam antaradhīyata ॥1-201-15॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; क्षोभं (kṣobham) - agitation; न (na) - not; उपयाति (upayāti) - approaches; न (na) - not; आर्तिम् (ārtim) - distress; अन्यतरः (anyataraḥ) - either one; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; ता (tā) - those; भूतम् (bhūtam) - being; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(When agitation does not approach nor distress either of the two, then those women and all beings disappeared.)
When neither agitation nor distress affected either of the two, then those women and all beings vanished.
ततः पितामहः साक्षादभिगम्य महासुरौ । वरेण छन्दयामास सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥१-२०१-१६॥
tataḥ pitāmahaḥ sākṣād abhigamya mahāsurau । vareṇa chandayāmāsa sarvalokapitāmahaḥ ॥1-201-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; महासुरौ (mahāsurau) - the two great asuras; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; छन्दयामास (chandayāmāsa) - caused to choose; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather of all worlds;]
(Then the grandfather, having directly approached the two great asuras, with a boon, caused (them) to choose, the grandfather of all worlds.)
Then the Grandfather, having directly approached the two great asuras, offered them a boon to choose, he who is the grandfather of all worlds.
ततः सुन्दोपसुन्दौ तौ भ्रातरौ दृढविक्रमौ । दृष्ट्वा पितामहं देवं तस्थतुः प्राञ्जली तदा ॥१-२०१-१७॥
tataḥ sundopasundau tau bhrātarau dṛḍhavikramau । dṛṣṭvā pitāmahaṃ devaṃ tasthatuḥ prāñjalī tadā ॥1-201-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुन्द-उपसुन्दौ (sunda-upasundau) - Sunda and Upasunda; तौ (tau) - those two; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - brothers; दृढ-विक्रमौ (dṛḍha-vikramau) - firm in valor; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; देवम् (devam) - the god; तस्थतुः (tasthatuḥ) - stood; प्राञ्जली (prāñjalī) - with joined palms; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Sunda and Upasunda, those two brothers firm in valor, having seen the grandsire god, stood with joined palms then.)
Then, Sunda and Upasunda, the two valorous brothers, upon seeing the grandsire god, stood before him with joined palms.
ऊचतुश्च प्रभुं देवं ततस्तौ सहितौ तदा । आवयोस्तपसानेन यदि प्रीतः पितामहः ॥१-२०१-१८॥
ūcatuś ca prabhuṃ devaṃ tatastau sahitau tadā । āvayostapasānena yadi prītaḥ pitāmahaḥ ॥1-201-18॥
[ऊचतुश् (ūcatuś) - they both said; च (ca) - and; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord; देवम् (devam) - god; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; तदा (tadā) - at that time; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अनेन (anena) - by this; यदि (yadi) - if; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather (Brahmā);]
(They both said to the lord god, then those two together at that time: If the grandfather (Brahmā) is pleased by this austerity of us two.)
They both addressed the lord god, and then, together, said at that time: "If our grandfather (Brahmā) is pleased with this austerity of ours..."
मायाविदावस्त्रविदौ बलिनौ कामरूपिणौ । उभावप्यमरौ स्यावः प्रसन्नो यदि नौ प्रभुः ॥१-२०१-१९॥
māyā-vidau astra-vidau balinau kāma-rūpiṇau | ubhāv api amarau syāvaḥ prasannaḥ yadi nau prabhuḥ ||1-201-19||
[मायाविदौ (māyā-vidau) - knowers of illusion; अस्त्रविदौ (astra-vidau) - knowers of weapons; बलिनौ (balinau) - strong; कामरूपिणौ (kāma-rūpiṇau) - assuming forms at will; उभावपि (ubhāv api) - both also; अमरौ (amarau) - immortal; स्यावः (syāvaḥ) - may become; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - gracious; यदि (yadi) - if; नौ (nau) - to us; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord;]
(If the Lord is gracious to us, both of us, knowers of illusion and weapons, strong, assuming forms at will, may become immortal.)
If the Lord is gracious to us, both of us, skilled in illusion and weaponry, strong and able to assume any form, may become immortal.
पितामह उवाच॥
pitāmaha uvāca॥

The paternal grandfather said.
ऋतेऽमरत्वमन्यद्वां सर्वमुक्तं भविष्यति । अन्यद्वृणीतां मृत्योश्च विधानममरैः समम् ॥१-२०१-२०॥
ṛte'maratvamanyadvāṃ sarvamuktaṃ bhaviṣyati । anyadvṛṇītāṃ mṛtyośca vidhānamamaraiḥ samam ॥1-201-20॥
[ऋते (ṛte) - except; अमरत्वम् (amaratvam) - immortality; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वां (vāṃ) - for you two; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वृणीताम् (vṛṇītām) - let (you two) choose; मृत्योष् (mṛtyoḥ) - of death; च (ca) - and; विधानम् (vidhānam) - arrangement; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with the immortals; समम् (samam) - equal;]
(Except immortality, for you two all (else) spoken will be. Other (thing) let you two choose, and the arrangement of death (be) equal with the immortals.)
Except for immortality, everything else that has been spoken will be granted to you two. Choose something else, and the arrangement regarding death will be made equal to that of the immortals.
करिष्यावेदमिति यन्महदभ्युत्थितं तपः । युवयोर्हेतुनानेन नामरत्वं विधीयते ॥१-२०१-२१॥
kariṣyāvedamiti yan-mahad-abhyutthitaṃ tapaḥ । yuvayor-hetunā-anena nāmaratvaṃ vidhīyate ॥1-201-21॥

(I shall do this—thus, which great arisen austerity; of you two by the cause by this, immortality is ordained.)
Because of the great austerity that has arisen with your resolve of 'I shall do this,' immortality is ordained for you both by this cause.
त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय भवद्भ्यामास्थितं तपः । हेतुनानेन दैत्येन्द्रौ न वां कामं करोम्यहम् ॥१-२०१-२२॥
trailokyavijayārthāya bhavadbhyām āsthitaṃ tapaḥ | hetunānena daityendrau na vāṃ kāmaṃ karomy aham ||1-201-22||
[त्रैलोक्य (trailokya) - three worlds; विजय (vijaya) - victory; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the purpose; भवद्भ्याम् (bhavadbhyām) - by you both; आस्थितं (āsthitam) - undertaken; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; हेतुना (hetunā) - for the reason; अनेन (anena) - by this; दैत्येन्द्रौ (daityendrau) - O chiefs of the Daityas; न (na) - not; वाम् (vām) - for you both; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(For the purpose of victory over the three worlds, austerity has been undertaken by you both; for this reason, O chiefs of the Daityas, I do not grant your desire.)
You both have undertaken austerity for the purpose of conquering the three worlds; for this reason, O chiefs of the Daityas, I do not grant your wish.
सुन्दोपसुन्दावूचतुः॥
sundopasundāvūcatuḥ॥

Sunda and Upasunda both spoke.
त्रिषु लोकेषु यद्भूतं किञ्चित्स्थावरजङ्गमम् । सर्वस्मान्नौ भयं न स्यादृतेऽन्योन्यं पितामह ॥१-२०१-२३॥
triṣu lokeṣu yad bhūtaṃ kiñcit sthāvara-jaṅgamam । sarvasmān nau bhayaṃ na syād ṛte'nyonyaṃ pitāmaha ॥1-201-23॥

O grandsire, in all the three worlds, whatever beings there are, whether immobile or mobile, there would be no fear for us from anything except from one another.

The paternal grandfather spoke.
यत्प्रार्थितं यथोक्तं च काममेतद्ददानि वाम् । मृत्योर्विधानमेतच्च यथावद्वां भविष्यति ॥१-२०१-२४॥
yatprārthitaṃ yathoktaṃ ca kāmam etad dadāni vām । mṛtyor vidhānam etac ca yathāvad vāṃ bhaviṣyati ॥1-201-24॥
[यत् (yat) - which; प्रार्थितं (prārthitam) - requested; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as spoken; च (ca) - and; कामम् (kāmam) - as desired; एतत् (etat) - this; ददानि (dadāni) - I give; वाम् (vām) - to you (dual); मृत्योर् (mṛtyor) - of death; विधानम् (vidhānam) - arrangement; एतच्च (etac ca) - and this; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; वां (vāṃ) - for you (dual); भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Which was requested, as spoken, and as desired, this I give to you; the arrangement of death, this also, properly for you, will be.)
I grant you both exactly what you have requested and as you have spoken; the arrangement regarding death will also be as it should for you.
नारद उवाच॥

ततः पितामहो दत्त्वा वरमेतत्तदा तयोः । निवर्त्य तपसस्तौ च ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह ॥१-२०१-२५॥
tataḥ pitāmaho dattvā varam etat tadā tayoḥ । nivartya tapasas tau ca brahmalokaṃ jagāma ha ॥1-201-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; वरम् (varam) - the boon; एतत् (etat) - this; तदा (tadā) - then; तयोः (tayoḥ) - to those two; निवर्त्य (nivartya) - having caused to desist; तपसः (tapasas) - from austerity; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - Brahma's world; जगाम (jagāma) - went; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then the grandsire, having given this boon to those two, having caused them to desist from austerity, those two and (he) went to Brahma's world indeed.)
Then the grandsire granted this boon to the two, caused them to desist from their austerities, and then went to Brahma's world.
लब्ध्वा वराणि सर्वाणि दैत्येन्द्रावपि तावुभौ । अवध्यौ सर्वलोकस्य स्वमेव भवनं गतौ ॥१-२०१-२६॥
labdhvā varāṇi sarvāṇi daityendrāv api tau ubhau । avadhyau sarvalokasya svam eva bhavanaṃ gatau ॥1-201-26॥
[लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; वराणि (varāṇi) - boons; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; दैत्येन्द्रौ (daityendrāu) - the two lords of the Daityas; अपि (api) - also; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अवध्यौ (avadhyau) - not to be slain; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the worlds; स्वम् (svam) - their own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनं (bhavanam) - abode; गतौ (gatau) - went;]
(Having obtained all the boons, the two lords of the Daityas, those two, also both, not to be slain by all the worlds, indeed went to their own abode.)
After receiving all the boons, the two Daitya lords, now invulnerable to all beings, returned to their own abode.
तौ तु लब्धवरौ दृष्ट्वा कृतकामौ महासुरौ । सर्वः सुहृज्जनस्ताभ्यां प्रमोदमुपजग्मिवान् ॥१-२०१-२७॥
tau tu labdhavarau dṛṣṭvā kṛtakāmau mahāsurau । sarvaḥ suhṛjjanastābhyāṃ pramodamupajagmivān ॥1-201-27॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; तु (tu) - but; लब्धवरौ (labdhavarau) - having obtained boons; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कृतकामौ (kṛtakāmau) - having fulfilled desires; महासुरौ (mahāsurau) - great asuras; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; सुहृज्जनः (suhṛjjanaḥ) - friends and people; ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - by those two; प्रमोदम् (pramodam) - joy; उपजग्मिवान् (upajagmivān) - attained;]
(Those two, but, having obtained boons, having seen, having fulfilled desires, great asuras; all friends and people, by those two, joy, attained.)
But when those two great asuras, having obtained boons and fulfilled their desires, were seen, all their friends and people rejoiced because of them.
ततस्तौ तु जटा हित्वा मौलिनौ सम्बभूवतुः । महार्हाभरणोपेतौ विरजोम्बरधारिणौ ॥१-२०१-२८॥
tatastau tu jaṭā hitvā maulinau sambabhūvatuḥ । mahārhābharaṇopetau virajombaradhāriṇau ॥1-201-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; तु (tu) - but; जटा (jaṭā) - matted hair; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; मौलिनौ (maulinau) - on the heads (dual); सम् (sam) - together; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became (dual); महार्ह (mahārha) - most precious; आभरण (ābharaṇa) - ornaments; उपेतौ (upetau) - adorned (dual); विरजः (virajaḥ) - spotless; अम्बर (ambara) - garments; धारिणौ (dhāriṇau) - wearing (dual);]
(Then those two, but having abandoned matted hair, became with crowns on their heads; adorned with most precious ornaments, wearing spotless garments.)
Then those two, having cast off their matted hair, appeared crowned; they were adorned with the finest ornaments and wore spotless garments.
अकालकौमुदीं चैव चक्रतुः सार्वकामिकीम् । दैत्येन्द्रौ परमप्रीतौ तयोश्चैव सुहृज्जनः ॥१-२०१-२९॥
akālakāumudīṃ caiva cakratuḥ sārvakāmikīm । daityendrau paramaprītau tayoścaiva suhṛj-janaḥ ॥1-201-29॥
[अकालकौमुदीं (akālakāumudīm) - untimely full-moon festival; (akāla - untimely; kaumudī - full-moon festival;) च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - they made; सार्वकामिकीम् (sārvakāmikīm) - fulfilling all desires; दैत्येन्द्रौ (daityendrau) - the two lords of the Daityas; परमप्रीतौ (paramaprītau) - extremely delighted; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them (two); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुहृज्जनः (suhṛj-janaḥ) - friendly people;]
(The two lords of the Daityas, extremely delighted, indeed made an untimely full-moon festival fulfilling all desires; and indeed, the friendly people of both of them (participated).)
The two Daitya chiefs, being extremely pleased, organized an untimely full-moon festival that fulfilled every desire; and all their friends and associates joined in as well.
भक्ष्यतां भुज्यतां नित्यं रम्यतां गीयतामिति । पीयतां दीयतां चेति वाच आसन्गृहे गृहे ॥१-२०१-३०॥
bhakṣyatāṃ bhujyatāṃ nityaṃ ramyatāṃ gīyatāmiti । pīyatāṃ dīyatāṃ ceti vāca āsan gṛhe gṛhe ॥1-201-30॥
[भक्ष्यताम् (bhakṣyatām) - let it be eaten; भुज्यताम् (bhujyatām) - let it be enjoyed; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; रम्यताम् (ramyatām) - let it be delighted in; गीयताम् (gīyatām) - let it be sung; इति (iti) - thus; पीयताम् (pīyatām) - let it be drunk; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; आसन् (āsan) - were; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(Let it be eaten, let it be enjoyed, always let it be delighted in, let it be sung, thus; let it be drunk, let it be given, and thus; words were in the house, in the house.)
In every house, the words were: "Let it be eaten, let it be enjoyed, let it always be delightful, let it be sung; let it be drunk, let it be given."
तत्र तत्र महापानैरुत्कृष्टतलनादितैः । हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं दैत्यानामभवत्पुरम् ॥१-२०१-३१॥
tatra tatra mahāpānair utkṛṣṭatalanāditaiḥ । hṛṣṭaṃ pramuditaṃ sarvaṃ daityānām abhavat puram ॥1-201-31॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; महापानैः (mahāpānaiḥ) - with great drinks; उत्कृष्ट (utkṛṣṭa) - excellent; तल (tala) - cymbals; नादितैः (nāditaiḥ) - resounded; हृष्टं (hṛṣṭam) - joyful; प्रमुदितं (pramuditaṃ) - delighted; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(There, there, with great drinks, resounded by excellent cymbals, joyful, delighted, all the city of the Daityas became.)
Everywhere, the city of the Daityas became joyful and delighted, resounding with excellent cymbals and great drinks.
तैस्तैर्विहारैर्बहुभिर्दैत्यानां कामरूपिणाम् । समाः सङ्क्रीडतां तेषामहरेकमिवाभवत् ॥१-२०१-३२॥
taistair vihārair bahubhir daityānāṃ kāmarūpiṇām । samāḥ saṅkrīḍatāṃ teṣām ahar ekam iva abhavat ॥1-201-32॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by those; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; विहारैः (vihāraiḥ) - by amusements; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; कामरूपिणाम् (kāmarūpiṇām) - of those assuming forms at will; समाः (samāḥ) - years; सङ्क्रीडताम् (saṅkrīḍatām) - of those sporting together; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अहः (ahaḥ) - a day; एकम् (ekam) - one; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(By those many amusements of the Daityas who could assume forms at will, for those sporting together, the years passed as if they were a single day.)
For those Daityas who could assume forms at will, engaged in many amusements, the years passed by as if they were just a single day.
