उत्सवे वृत्तमात्रे तु त्रैलोक्याकाङ्क्षिणावुभौ । मन्त्रयित्वा ततः सेनां तावाज्ञापयतां तदा ॥१-२०२-१॥
utsave vṛttamātre tu trailokyākāṅkṣiṇāvubhau । mantrayitvā tataḥ senāṃ tāvājñāpayatāṃ tadā ॥1-202-1॥
[उत्सवे (utsave) - in the festival; वृत्तमात्रे (vṛttamātre) - just after completion; तु (tu) - but; त्रैलोक्य (trailokya) - of the three worlds; आकाङ्क्षिणौ (ākāṅkṣiṇau) - desiring; उभौ (ubhau) - both; मन्त्रयित्वा (mantrayitvā) - having consulted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सेनाम् (senām) - army; तौ (tau) - those two; आज्ञापयताम् (ājñāpayatām) - ordered; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(In the festival, just after completion, but both desiring the three worlds, having consulted, then the army, those two ordered then.)

सुहृद्भिरभ्यनुज्ञातौ दैत्यवृद्धैश्च मन्त्रिभिः । कृत्वा प्रास्थानिकं रात्रौ मघासु ययतुस्तदा ॥१-२०२-२॥

(Having been permitted by friends, by the elder Daityas and counselors, having performed the departure ceremony at night when the Maghā constellation was present, then they went.)
With the permission of their friends, the elder Daityas, and counselors, after performing the departure ceremony at night under the Maghā constellation, they set out.
गदापट्टिशधारिण्या शूलमुद्गरहस्तया । प्रस्थितौ सहधर्मिण्या महत्या दैत्यसेनया ॥१-२०२-३॥
gadā-paṭṭiśa-dhāriṇyā śūla-mudgara-hastayā । prasthitau sahadharmiṇyā mahatyā daityasenayā ॥1-202-3॥
[गदा (gadā) - mace; पट्टिश (paṭṭiśa) - spear; धारिण्या (dhāriṇyā) - by the bearer (feminine); शूल (śūla) - trident; मुद्गर (mudgara) - club; हस्तया (hastayā) - by the one having in hand (feminine); प्रस्थितौ (prasthitau) - having set out; सहधर्मिण्या (sahadharmiṇyā) - with the wife (companion in dharma); महत्या (mahatyā) - with the great; दैत्यसेनया (daityasenayā) - with the army of Daityas (demons);]
(By the bearer of mace and spear, by the one having trident and club in hand, having set out with the wife, with the great army of Daityas.)
The one bearing a mace and spear, holding a trident and club in her hands, set out together with her wife and the great army of Daityas.
मङ्गलैः स्तुतिभिश्चापि विजयप्रतिसंहितैः । चारणैः स्तूयमानौ तु जग्मतुः परया मुदा ॥१-२०२-४॥
maṅgalaiḥ stutibhiś cāpi vijaya-pratisaṁhitaiḥ । cāraṇaiḥ stūyamānau tu jagmatuḥ parayā mudā ॥1-202-4॥
[मङ्गलैः (maṅgalaiḥ) - by auspicious (songs); स्तुतिभिः (stutibhiḥ) - by praises; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विजयप्रतिसंहितैः (vijaya-pratisaṁhitaiḥ) - accompanied by victory (songs); चारणैः (cāraṇaiḥ) - by celestial bards; स्तूयमानौ (stūyamānau) - being praised; तु (tu) - but; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - they went; परया (parayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy;]
(By auspicious (songs), by praises and also accompanied by victory (songs), being praised by celestial bards, but they went with supreme joy.)

तावन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य दैत्यौ कामगमावुभौ । देवानामेव भवनं जग्मतुर्युद्धदुर्मदौ ॥१-२०२-५॥
tāvantarikṣam utpatya daityau kāmagamāv ubhau । devānām eva bhavanaṃ jagmatur yuddha-durmadau ॥1-202-5॥
[तावत् (tāvat) - then; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - sky; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having ascended; दैत्यौ (daityau) - the two Daityas; कामगमौ (kāmagamau) - moving at will; उभौ (ubhau) - both; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनम् (bhavanam) - abode; जग्मतु: (jagmatuḥ) - they went; युद्धदुर्मदौ (yuddha-durmadau) - intoxicated with battle;]
(Then, having ascended the sky, the two Daityas, both moving at will, indeed went to the abode of the gods, intoxicated with battle.)
Then the two Daityas, able to move at will, rose into the sky and, intoxicated by the prospect of battle, went straight to the gods' abode.
तयोरागमनं ज्ञात्वा वरदानं च तत्प्रभोः । हित्वा त्रिविष्टपं जग्मुर्ब्रह्मलोकं ततः सुराः ॥१-२०२-६॥
tayorāgamanaṃ jñātvā varadānaṃ ca tatprabhoḥ । hitvā triviṣṭapaṃ jagmur brahmalokaṃ tataḥ surāḥ ॥1-202-6॥
[तयोः (tayor) - of those two; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - arrival; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; वरदानम् (varadānam) - boon-giving; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; प्रभोः (prabhoḥ) - of the lord; हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; त्रिविष्टपम् (triviṣṭapam) - heaven; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - to the world of Brahma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods;]
(Having known the arrival of those two and the boon-giving of that lord, having left heaven, then the gods went to the world of Brahma.)
When the gods learned of the arrival of those two and the boon granted by the lord, they left heaven and went to Brahma's world.
ताविन्द्रलोकं निर्जित्य यक्षरक्षोगणांस्तथा । खेचराण्यपि भूतानि जिग्यतुस्तीव्रविक्रमौ ॥१-२०२-७॥
tāv indralokaṃ nirjitya yakṣarakṣogaṇāṃs tathā | khecarāṇy api bhūtāni jigyatus tīvra-vikramau ॥1-202-7॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; इन्द्रलोकं (indralokam) - Indra's world; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; यक्षरक्षोगणान् (yakṣarakṣogaṇān) - the hosts of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas; तथा (tathā) - likewise; खेचराणि (khecarāṇi) - sky-dwellers; अपि (api) - also; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; जिग्यतुः (jigyatuḥ) - wished to conquer; तीव्रविक्रमौ (tīvravikramau) - of intense valor;]
(Those two, having conquered Indra's world and likewise the hosts of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, also wished to conquer the sky-dwelling beings, being of intense valor.)
Those two, possessing intense valor, after conquering Indra's world and the hosts of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, also desired to defeat the sky-dwelling beings.
अन्तर्भूमिगतान्नागाञ्जित्वा तौ च महासुरौ । समुद्रवासिनः सर्वान्म्लेच्छजातीन्विजिग्यतुः ॥१-२०२-८॥
antarbhūmigatānnāgāñjitvā tau ca mahāsurau । samudravāsinaḥ sarvānmlecchajātīnvijigyatuḥ ॥1-202-8॥
[अन्तर्भूमि-गतान् (antarbhūmi-gatān) - who had gone beneath the earth; नागान् (nāgān) - Nāgas; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; महासुरौ (mahāsurau) - great Asuras; समुद्र-वासिनः (samudra-vāsinaḥ) - those dwelling in the ocean; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; म्लेच्छ-जातीन् (mleccha-jātīn) - foreign tribes; विजिग्यतुः (vijigyatuḥ) - they conquered;]
(Having conquered the Nāgas who had gone beneath the earth, those two great Asuras also conquered all the foreign tribes dwelling in the ocean.)
After defeating the Nāgas who had gone underground, those two mighty Asuras also subdued all the foreign tribes living by the ocean.
ततः सर्वां महीं जेतुमारब्धावुग्रशासनौ । सैनिकांश्च समाहूय सुतीक्ष्णां वाचमूचतुः ॥१-२०२-९॥
tataḥ sarvāṃ mahīṃ jetumārabdhāvugraśāsanau । sainikāṃśca samāhūya sutīkṣṇāṃ vācamūcatuḥ ॥1-202-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वां (sarvām) - all; महीं (mahīm) - earth; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; आरब्धौ (ārabdhau) - began; उग्रशासनौ (ugraśāsanau) - having stern command; (dual) सैनिकान् (sainikān) - soldiers; च (ca) - and; समाहूय (samāhūya) - having summoned; सुतीक्ष्णां (sutīkṣṇām) - sharp; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - they both spoke; (dual);]
(Then, both having stern command, having begun to conquer all the earth, having summoned the soldiers, spoke sharp speech.)

राजर्षयो महायज्ञैर्हव्यकव्यैर्द्विजातयः । तेजो बलं च देवानां वर्धयन्ति श्रियं तथा ॥१-२०२-१०॥
rājarṣayo mahāyajñair havyakavyair dvijātayaḥ । tejo balaṃ ca devānāṃ vardhayanti śriyaṃ tathā ॥1-202-10॥
[राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; महायज्ञैः (mahāyajñaiḥ) - by great sacrifices; हव्यकव्यैः (havyakavyaiḥ) - with offerings to gods and ancestors; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmins, etc.); तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; बलम् (balam) - strength; च (ca) - and; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; वर्धयन्ति (vardhayanti) - increase; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Royal sages, by great sacrifices and with offerings to gods and ancestors, the twice-born increase the splendor, strength, and prosperity of the gods likewise.)

तेषामेवं प्रवृद्धानां सर्वेषामसुरद्विषाम् । सम्भूय सर्वैरस्माभिः कार्यः सर्वात्मना वधः ॥१-२०२-११॥
teṣām evaṃ pravṛddhānāṃ sarveṣām asuradviṣām । sambhūya sarvair asmābhiḥ kāryaḥ sarvātmanā vadhaḥ ॥1-202-11॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रवृद्धानाम् (pravṛddhānām) - grown powerful; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; असुरद्विषाम् (asuradviṣām) - of the enemies of the asuras; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - having united; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with all (our) being; वधः (vadhaḥ) - destruction;]
(Of them thus grown powerful, of all the enemies of the asuras, having united by all of us, destruction should be done with all (our) being.)
Therefore, of all those enemies of the asuras who have thus grown powerful, we all must unite and with all our strength bring about their destruction.
एवं सर्वान्समादिश्य पूर्वतीरे महोदधेः । क्रूरां मतिं समास्थाय जग्मतुः सर्वतोमुखम् ॥१-२०२-१२॥
evaṃ sarvānsamādiśya pūrvatīre mahodadheḥ । krūrāṃ matiṃ samāsthāya jagmatuḥ sarvatomukham ॥1-202-12॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (accusative plural masculine); समादिश्य (samādiśya) - having instructed; पूर्वतीरे (pūrvatīre) - on the eastern shore; महोदधेः (mahodadheḥ) - of the great ocean; क्रूरां (krūrāṃ) - cruel; मतिं (matiṃ) - intention; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having assumed; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - they went; सर्वतोमुखम् (sarvatomukham) - in all directions;]
(Thus, having instructed all (the others) on the eastern shore of the great ocean, having assumed a cruel intention, they went in all directions.)
Thus, after instructing everyone on the eastern shore of the great ocean, and adopting a cruel resolve, they set out in all directions.
यज्ञैर्यजन्ते ये केचिद्याजयन्ति च ये द्विजाः । तान्सर्वान्प्रसभं दृष्ट्वा बलिनौ जघ्नतुस्तदा ॥१-२०२-१३॥
yajñairyajante ye kecidyājayanti ca ye dvijāḥ । tānsarvānprasabhaṃ dṛṣṭvā balinau jaghnatustadā ॥1-202-13॥
[यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; यजन्ते (yajante) - worship; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; याजयन्ति (yājayanti) - cause to perform sacrifice; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (Brahmins); तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रसभम् (prasabham) - by force; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बलिनौ (balinau) - the two strong ones; जघ्नुतुः (jaghnatuḥ) - killed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(By sacrifices worship (those) who some cause to perform sacrifice and who twice-born; them all by force having seen the two strong ones killed then.)
Seeing all those twice-born who worship by sacrifices and those who cause others to perform sacrifices, the two strong ones then killed them all by force.
आश्रमेष्वग्निहोत्राणि ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम् । गृहीत्वा प्रक्षिपन्त्यप्सु विश्रब्धाः सैनिकास्तयोः ॥१-२०२-१४॥
āśrameṣv agnihotrāṇi ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām । gṛhītvā prakṣipanty apsu viśrabdhāḥ sainikās tayoḥ ॥1-202-14॥
[आश्रमेषु (āśrameṣu) - in the hermitages; अग्निहोत्राणि (agnihotrāṇi) - sacrificial fires; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - whose minds are purified; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; प्रक्षिपन्ति (prakṣipanti) - throw; अप्सु (apsu) - into the waters; विश्रब्धाः (viśrabdhāḥ) - confidently; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - the soldiers; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa);]
(In the hermitages, the sacrificial fires of the sages whose minds are purified, having taken, the soldiers of those two confidently throw into the waters.)

तपोधनैश्च ये शापाः क्रुद्धैरुक्ता महात्मभिः । नाक्रामन्ति तयोस्तेऽपि वरदानेन जृम्भतोः ॥१-२०२-१५॥
tapodhanaiś ca ye śāpāḥ kruddhair uktā mahātmabhiḥ । nākrāmanti tayos te'pi varadānena jṛmbhatoḥ ॥1-202-15॥
[तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by ascetics; by those whose wealth is austerity; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - which; those; शापाः (śāpāḥ) - curses; क्रुद्धैः (kruddhaiḥ) - by the enraged; by the angry; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken; uttered; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled; by the noble ones; न (na) - not; आक्रामन्ति (ākrāmanti) - overcome; transgress; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - even; also; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the boon; by the granting of a boon; जृम्भतोः (jṛmbhatoḥ) - of the yawning ones; of those who yawn (expand, manifest);]
(And the curses which were spoken by the angry great-souled ascetics do not overcome even those two, by the granting of a boon, of the yawning ones.)
Even the curses uttered by the enraged ascetics of great soul do not affect those two, for they are protected by the boon granted to the yawning ones.
नाक्रामन्ति यदा शापा बाणा मुक्ताः शिलास्विव । नियमांस्तदा परित्यज्य व्यद्रवन्त द्विजातयः ॥१-२०२-१६॥
nākrāmanti yadā śāpā bāṇā muktāḥ śilāsu iva । niyamān tadā parityajya vyadravanta dvijātayaḥ ॥1-202-16॥
[नाक्रामन्ति (nākrāmanti) - do not overstep; do not transgress; यदा (yadā) - when; शापा (śāpā) - curses; बाणा (bāṇā) - arrows; मुक्ताः (muktāḥ) - released; discharged; शिलासु (śilāsu) - on stones; इव (iva) - like; as if; नियमान् (niyamān) - restraints; rules; तदा (tadā) - then; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; व्यद्रवन्त (vyadravanta) - ran away; fled; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born; Brāhmaṇas;]
(When curses and arrows released do not overstep, like (arrows) on stones, then having abandoned restraints, the twice-born fled.)

पृथिव्यां ये तपःसिद्धा दान्ताः शमपरायणाः । तयोर्भयाद्दुद्रुवुस्ते वैनतेयादिवोरगाः ॥१-२०२-१७॥
pṛthivyāṃ ye tapaḥsiddhā dāntāḥ śamaparāyaṇāḥ । tayorbhayāddudruvuste vainateyādivoragāḥ ॥1-202-17॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; ये (ye) - who; तपःसिद्धाः (tapaḥsiddhāḥ) - perfected in austerity; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-restrained; शमपरायणाः (śamaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to tranquility; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them (the two); भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; दुद्रुवुः (dudruvuḥ) - fled; ते (te) - they; वैनतेयादिव (vainateyādiva) - like from Garuḍa; उरगाः (uragāḥ) - serpents;]
(On the earth, those who are perfected in austerity, self-restrained, devoted to tranquility; from fear of the two, they fled, the serpents like from Garuḍa.)

मथितैराश्रमैर्भग्नैर्विकीर्णकलशस्रुवैः । शून्यमासीज्जगत्सर्वं कालेनेव हतं यथा ॥१-२०२-१८॥
mathitair āśramair bhagnair vikīrṇa-kalaśa-sruvaiḥ । śūnyam āsīt jagat sarvaṃ kālena iva hataṃ yathā ॥1-202-18॥
[मथितैः (mathitaiḥ) - by those who have been churned; आश्रमैः (āśramaiḥ) - hermitages; भग्नैः (bhagnaiḥ) - broken; विकीर्ण (vikīrṇa) - scattered; कलश (kalaśa) - water pots; स्रुवैः (sruvaiḥ) - by ladles; शून्यम् (śūnyam) - empty; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जगत् (jagat) - world; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; कालेन (kālena) - by time; इव (iva) - as if; हतम् (hatam) - destroyed; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(By hermitages that had been churned, by broken and scattered water pots and ladles, the whole world was empty, just as if destroyed by time.)
The world, with its hermitages churned, water pots and ladles broken and scattered, appeared empty, as if it had been destroyed by time.
राजर्षिभिरदृश्यद्भिरृषिभिश्च महासुरौ । उभौ विनिश्चयं कृत्वा विकुर्वाते वधैषिणौ ॥१-२०२-१९॥
rājarṣibhir adṛśyadbhiḥ ṛṣibhiś ca mahāsurau । ubhau viniścayaṃ kṛtvā vikurvāte vadhaiṣiṇau ॥1-202-19॥
[राजर्षिभिः (rājarṣibhiḥ) - by royal sages; अदृश्यद्भिः (adṛśyadbhiḥ) - by those who were not seen; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; च (ca) - and; महासुरौ (mahāsurau) - the two great asuras; उभौ (ubhau) - both; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - decision; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; विकुर्वाते (vikurvāte) - engaged in conflict; वधैषिणौ (vadhaiṣiṇau) - desiring to kill;]
(The two great asuras, not seen by royal sages and sages, both having made a decision, engaged in conflict, desiring to kill.)

प्रभिन्नकरटौ मत्तौ भूत्वा कुञ्जररूपिणौ । संलीनानपि दुर्गेषु निन्यतुर्यमसादनम् ॥१-२०२-२०॥

[प्रभिन्न (prabhinna) - broken; करटौ (karaṭau) - tusked ones; मत्तौ (mattau) - intoxicated; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; कुञ्जररूपिणौ (kuñjararūpiṇau) - in the form of elephants; संलीनान् (saṃlīnān) - those who are hidden; अपि (api) - even; दुर्गेषु (durgeṣu) - in the fortresses; निन्यतुः (ninyatuḥ) - they led; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - the abode of Yama (death);]
(Having become intoxicated, broken-tusked, in the form of elephants, they led even those who were hidden in the fortresses to the abode of Yama (death).)
Having assumed the form of intoxicated, broken-tusked elephants, they drove even those concealed in the fortresses to their death.
सिंहौ भूत्वा पुनर्व्याघ्रौ पुनश्चान्तर्हितावुभौ । तैस्तैरुपायैस्तौ क्रूरावृषीन्दृष्ट्वा निजघ्नतुः ॥१-२०२-२१॥
siṃhau bhūtvā punarvyāghrau punaścāntarhitāvubhau । taistairupāyaistau krūrāvṛṣīndṛṣṭvā nijaghnatuḥ ॥1-202-21॥
