O auspicious one, this twelve-year vow of celibacy is mine, commanded by Dharmarāja, and I am not independent in this matter.
तव चापि प्रियं कर्तुमिच्छामि जलचारिणि । अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं च मया किञ्चन कर्हिचित् ॥१-२०६-२२॥
tava cāpi priyaṃ kartum icchāmi jalacāriṇi । anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ ca mayā kiñcana karhicit ॥1-206-22॥
[तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear (thing); कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; जलचारिणि (jalacāriṇi) - O water-dweller; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; न (na) - not; उक्तपूर्वं (ukta-pūrvam) - spoken before; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(Of you and also dear (thing) to do I wish, O water-dweller. Falsehood not spoken before and by me anything ever.)
O water-dweller, I also wish to do what is dear to you. I have never spoken any falsehood at any time.
कथं च नानृतं तत्स्यात्तव चापि प्रियं भवेत् । न च पीड्येत मे धर्मस्तथा कुर्यां भुजङ्गमे ॥१-२०६-२३॥
kathaṁ ca nānṛtaṁ tasyāttava cāpi priyaṁ bhavet । na ca pīḍyeta me dharmastathā kuryāṁ bhujaṅgame ॥1-206-23॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अनृतं (anṛtaṁ) - falsehood; तत् (tat) - that; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - dear; भवेत् (bhavet) - might become; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पीड्येत (pīḍyeta) - would be afflicted; मे (me) - my; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; तथा (tathā) - thus; कुर्यां (kuryāṁ) - I should do; भुजङ्गमे (bhujaṅgame) - to the serpent;]
(How and not falsehood that might be, and also your dear might become. And not would be afflicted my duty, thus I should do to the serpent.)
How can it be that I do not speak falsehood, and yet what is dear to you may happen? And my duty is not afflicted; thus should I act towards the serpent.

जानाम्यहं पाण्डवेय यथा चरसि मेदिनीम् । यथा च ते ब्रह्मचर्यमिदमादिष्टवान्गुरुः ॥१-२०६-२४॥
jānāmyahaṃ pāṇḍaveya yathā carasi medinīm । yathā ca te brahmacaryam idam ādiṣṭavān guruḥ ॥1-206-24॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; पाण्डवेय (pāṇḍaveya) - O son of Pāṇḍu; यथा (yathā) - as; चरसि (carasi) - you move/live; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - on the earth; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; इदम् (idam) - this; आदिष्टवान् (ādiṣṭavān) - has instructed; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher;]
(I know, O son of Pāṇḍu, how you live on the earth, and how your teacher has instructed you in this celibacy.)
O son of Pāṇḍu, I know how you conduct yourself on earth and how your teacher has instructed you in this vow of celibacy.
परस्परं वर्तमानान्द्रुपदस्यात्मजां प्रति । यो नोऽनुप्रविशेन्मोहात्स नो द्वादशवार्षिकम् ॥ वने चरेद्ब्रह्मचर्यमिति वः समयः कृतः ॥१-२०६-२५॥
parasparaṃ vartamānān drupadasyātmajāṃ prati । yo no'nupraviśen mohāt sa no dvādaśavārṣikam ॥ vane cared brahmacaryam iti vaḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥1-206-25॥
[परस्परम् (parasparam) - mutually; वर्तमानान् (vartamānān) - living; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; आत्मजाम् (ātmajām) - daughter; प्रति (prati) - towards; यः (yaḥ) - who; नः (naḥ) - of us; अनुप्रविशेत् (anupraviśet) - enters; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; सः (saḥ) - he; नः (naḥ) - of us; द्वादशवार्षिकम् (dvādaśavārṣikam) - twelve years; वने (vane) - in the forest; चरेत् (caret) - should live; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; इति (iti) - thus; वः (vaḥ) - for you; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Mutually living towards Drupada's daughter, whoever among us enters (her chamber) out of delusion, he among us should live in the forest for twelve years practicing celibacy—thus, this agreement was made for you.)

तदिदं द्रौपदीहेतोरन्योन्यस्य प्रवासनम् । कृतं वस्तत्र धर्मार्थमत्र धर्मो न दुष्यति ॥१-२०६-२६॥
tad idaṃ draupadī-hetor anyonyasya pravāsanam । kṛtaṃ vas tatra dharmārtham atra dharmo na duṣyati ॥1-206-26॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; द्रौपदी-हेतोः (draupadī-hetor) - for the sake of Draupadī; अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of each other; प्रवासनम् (pravāsanam) - exile; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; वः (vaḥ) - by you; तत्र (tatra) - there; धर्म-अर्थम् (dharma-artham) - for the sake of dharma; अत्र (atra) - here; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; न (na) - not; दुष्यति (duṣyati) - is corrupted;]
(That this exile of each other for the sake of Draupadī has been done by you there for the sake of dharma; here, dharma is not corrupted.)

परित्राणं च कर्तव्यमार्तानां पृथुलोचन । कृत्वा मम परित्राणं तव धर्मो न लुप्यते ॥१-२०६-२७॥
paritrāṇaṃ ca kartavyam ārtānāṃ pṛthulocana । kṛtvā mama paritrāṇaṃ tava dharmo na lupyate ॥1-206-27॥
[परित्राणम् (paritrāṇam) - protection; rescue; च (ca) - and; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - ought to be done; duty; आर्तानाम् (ārtānām) - of the distressed; पृथुलोचन (pṛthulocana) - O wide-eyed one; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मम (mama) - my; परित्राणम् (paritrāṇam) - protection; rescue; तव (tava) - your; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; righteousness; न (na) - not; लुप्यते (lupyate) - is lost; is destroyed;]
(Protection and duty to the distressed, O wide-eyed one, having given my protection, your dharma is not lost.)
O wide-eyed one, it is your duty to protect the distressed; by granting me protection, your righteousness will not be lost.
यदि वाप्यस्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मोऽपि स्याद्व्यतिक्रमः । स च ते धर्म एव स्याद्दात्त्वा प्राणान्ममार्जुन ॥१-२०६-२८॥
yadi vāpy asya dharmasya sūkṣmo'pi syād vyatikramaḥ । sa ca te dharma eva syād dātvā prāṇān mama arjuna ॥1-206-28॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; अस्य (asya) - of this; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; सूक्ष्मः (sūkṣmaḥ) - subtle; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; सः (saḥ) - that; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; एव (eva) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; दात्त्वा (dātvā) - having given; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; मम (mama) - my; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna;]
(If or even of this dharma a subtle transgression might be, that and your dharma indeed might be, having given lives, my Arjuna.)
If there is even a subtle transgression of this dharma, O Arjuna, even that would be your dharma, having given up my life.
भक्तां भजस्व मां पार्थ सतामेतन्मतं प्रभो । न करिष्यसि चेदेवं मृतां मामुपधारय ॥१-२०६-२९॥
bhaktāṃ bhajasva māṃ pārtha satāmetan-mataṃ prabho । na kariṣyasi cedevaṃ mṛtāṃ mām-upadhāraya ॥1-206-29॥

(Honor the devoted ones, O Pārtha, this is the opinion of the good, O lord. If you do not do thus, consider me as dead.)

प्राणदानान्महाबाहो चर धर्ममनुत्तमम् । शरणं च प्रपन्नास्मि त्वामद्य पुरुषोत्तम ॥१-२०६-३०॥
prāṇadānān-mahābāho cara dharmam-anuttamam । śaraṇaṃ ca prapannāsmi tvām-adya puruṣottama ॥1-206-30॥
[प्राणदानात् (prāṇadānāt) - from the giving of life; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; चर (cara) - practice; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - supreme; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; च (ca) - and; प्रपन्नः (prapannaḥ) - one who has taken shelter; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best among men;]
(O mighty-armed, practice the supreme dharma over the giving of life. And I am one who has taken refuge in you today, O best among men.)

दीनाननाथान्कौन्तेय परिरक्षसि नित्यशः । साहं शरणमभ्येमि रोरवीमि च दुःखिता ॥१-२०६-३१॥
dīnān-anāthān-kaunteya parirakṣasi nityaśaḥ । sāhaṃ śaraṇam abhyemi roravīmi ca duḥkhitā ॥1-206-31॥
[दीनान् (dīnān) - the afflicted; अनाथान् (anāthān) - the helpless; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; परिरक्षसि (parirakṣasi) - you protect; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; अभ्येमि (abhyemi) - I approach; रोरवीमि (roravīmi) - I cry; च (ca) - and; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - distressed;]
(O Kaunteya, you always protect the afflicted and the helpless. Therefore, I, being distressed, approach for refuge and cry.)

याचे त्वामभिकामाहं तस्मात्कुरु मम प्रियम् । स त्वमात्मप्रदानेन सकामां कर्तुमर्हसि ॥
yāce tvām abhikāmāhaṃ tasmāt kuru mama priyam । sa tvam ātma-pradānena sakāmāṃ kartum arhasi ॥
[याचे (yāce) - I request; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिकामः (abhikāmaḥ) - with desire; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कुरु (kuru) - do; मम (mama) - my; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मप्रदानेन (ātma-pradānena) - by self-giving; सकामाम् (sakāmām) - with desire; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(I request you with desire, therefore do my pleasing (wish). He, you, by self-giving, with desire, to do, you are worthy.)
I earnestly request you, so please do what pleases me. By giving yourself, you can fulfill my wish.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्तस्तु कौन्तेयः पन्नगेश्वरकन्यया । कृतवांस्तत्तथा सर्वं धर्ममुद्दिश्य कारणम् ॥१-२०६-३३॥
evam-uktas-tu kaunteyaḥ pannageśvara-kanyayā । kṛtavāṃs-tat-tathā sarvaṃ dharmam-uddiśya kāraṇam ॥1-206-33॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; पन्नगेश्वरकन्यया (pannageśvara-kanyayā) - by the daughter of the lord of serpents; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - so; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having aimed at; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the reason;]
(Thus addressed but the son of Kunti by the daughter of the lord of serpents, did that so all duty having aimed at the reason.)

स नागभवने रात्रिं तामुषित्वा प्रतापवान् । उदितेऽभ्युत्थितः सूर्ये कौरव्यस्य निवेशनात् ॥१-२०६-३४॥
sa nāgabhavane rātriṃ tām uṣitvā pratāpavān । udite'bhyutthitaḥ sūrye kauravyasya niveśanāt ॥1-206-34॥
[स (sa) - he; नागभवने (nāgabhavane) - in the Nāga palace; रात्रिं (rātriṃ) - night; ताम् (tām) - that; उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having spent; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the glorious one; उदिते (udite) - when risen; अभ्युत्थितः (abhyutthitaḥ) - having arisen; सूर्ये (sūrye) - sun; कौरव्यस्य (kauravyasya) - of Kauravya; निवेशनात् (niveśanāt) - from the residence;]
(He, having spent that night in the Nāga palace, the glorious one, when the sun had risen and arisen, from the residence of Kauravya.)
