evaṃ te samayaṃ kṛtvā nyavasaṃs tatra pāṇḍavāḥ । vaśe śastrapratāpena kurvanto'nyān mahīkṣitaḥ ॥1-205-1॥

(Thus, they having made an agreement, the Pāṇḍavas dwelt there, making other kings subject by the power of weapons.)

तेषां मनुजसिंहानां पञ्चानाममितौजसाम् । बभूव कृष्णा सर्वेषां पार्थानां वशवर्तिनी ॥१-२०५-२॥
teṣāṃ manujasiṃhānāṃ pañcānāmamitaujasām । babhūva kṛṣṇā sarveṣāṃ pārthānāṃ vaśavartinī ॥1-205-2॥

(Of those lion-like men, of the five of immeasurable energy, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) became obedient to all the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas).)
Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) became obedient to all the five lion-like, immeasurably energetic sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas).
ते तया तैश्च सा वीरैः पतिभिः सह पञ्चभिः । बभूव परमप्रीता नागैरिव सरस्वती ॥१-२०५-३॥
te tayā taiś ca sā vīraiḥ patibhiḥ saha pañcabhiḥ । babhūva paramaprītā nāgair iva sarasvatī ॥1-205-3॥

(They, by her and by those, she, by heroes, by husbands, together with five, became supremely pleased, like Sarasvatī with serpents.)
She, together with her five heroic husbands, was supremely pleased by them, just as Sarasvatī is pleased by the serpents.
वर्तमानेषु धर्मेण पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु । व्यवर्धन्कुरवः सर्वे हीनदोषाः सुखान्विताः ॥१-२०५-४॥
vartamāneṣu dharmeṇa pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu । vyavardhanku­ravaḥ sarve hīnadoṣāḥ sukhānvitāḥ ॥1-205-4॥
[वर्तमानेषु (vartamāneṣu) - in the present; in those existing; in those prevailing; in those abiding; in those current; in those ongoing; in those happening; in those being; in those present; in those continuing; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; by righteousness; by virtue; by law; by duty; by justice; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - in the Pāṇḍavas; among the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - in the great-souled; among the noble; among the magnanimous; व्यवर्धन् (vyavardhan) - grew; increased; prospered; developed; flourished; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; the Kuru people; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; हीनदोषाः (hīnadoṣāḥ) - devoid of faults; free from defects; lacking in faults; सुखान्विताः (sukhānvitāḥ) - endowed with happiness; possessed of happiness; filled with happiness;]
(In the present, by dharma, among the Pāṇḍavas, among the great-souled, the Kurus all grew, devoid of faults, endowed with happiness.)
While the Pāṇḍavas, who were great-souled, abided by dharma, all the Kurus flourished, free from faults and filled with happiness.
अथ दीर्घेण कालेन ब्राह्मणस्य विशां पते । कस्यचित्तस्कराः केचिज्जह्रुर्गा नृपसत्तम ॥१-२०५-५॥
atha dīrgheṇa kālena brāhmaṇasya viśāṃ pate | kasyacit taskarāḥ kecij jahrur gā nṛpasattama ||1-205-5||

(Then, O lord of the people, after a long time, some thieves took away the cows of a certain brāhmaṇa, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, after a long time, some thieves stole the cows belonging to a certain brāhmaṇa, O lord of the people.
ह्रियमाणे धने तस्मिन्ब्राह्मणः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः । आगम्य खाण्डवप्रस्थमुदक्रोशत पाण्डवान् ॥१-२०५-६॥
hriyamāṇe dhane tasmin brāhmaṇaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ । āgamya khāṇḍavaprastham udakrośata pāṇḍavān ॥1-205-6॥

(While the wealth was being carried away, in that (situation), the brāhmaṇa, overcome with anger, having come to Khāṇḍavaprastha, cried out to the Pāṇḍavas.)
As his wealth was being taken away, the brāhmaṇa, filled with anger, came to Khāṇḍavaprastha and cried out to the Pāṇḍavas.
ह्रियते गोधनं क्षुद्रैर्नृशंसैरकृतात्मभिः । प्रसह्य वोऽस्माद्विषयादभिधावत पाण्डवाः ॥१-२०५-७॥
hriyate godhanaṃ kṣudrair nṛśaṃsair akṛtātmabhiḥ । prasahya vo'smād viṣayād abhidhāvata pāṇḍavāḥ ॥1-205-7॥
[ह्रियते (hriyate) - is carried away; गोधनं (godhanam) - herd of cattle; क्षुद्रैः (kṣudraiḥ) - by the petty; नृशंसैः (nṛśaṃsaiḥ) - by the cruel; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those of unrestrained self; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; वः (vaḥ) - your; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; विषयात् (viṣayāt) - territory; अभिधावत (abhidhāvata) - run after; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - O Pāṇḍavas;]
(The herd of cattle is carried away by the petty, cruel, and unrestrained ones by force from your territory; O Pāṇḍavas, run after (them).)
O Pāṇḍavas, the herd of cattle is being forcefully taken away from your territory by petty and cruel men of unrestrained nature; pursue them at once.
ब्राह्मणस्य प्रमत्तस्य हविर्ध्वाङ्क्षैर्विलुप्यते । शार्दूलस्य गुहां शून्यां नीचः क्रोष्टाभिमर्शति ॥१-२०५-८॥
brāhmaṇasya pramattasya havirdhvāṅkṣair vilupyate । śārdūlasya guhāṃ śūnyāṃ nīcaḥ kroṣṭābhimarśati ॥1-205-8॥
[ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; प्रमत्तस्य (pramattasya) - of the careless; हविः (havis) - offering; ध्वाङ्क्षैः (dhvāṅkṣaiḥ) - by birds of prey; विलुप्यते (vilupyate) - is taken away; शार्दूलस्य (śārdūlasya) - of the tiger; गुहाम् (guhām) - cave; शून्याम् (śūnyām) - empty; नीचः (nīcaḥ) - a low person; क्रोष्टा (kroṣṭā) - jackal; अभिमर्शति (abhimarśati) - touches;]
(The offering of the careless brāhmaṇa is taken away by birds of prey. The cave of the tiger, when empty, is touched by a lowly jackal.)
The offerings of a careless brāhmaṇa are carried off by birds of prey; when the tiger's cave is empty, it is entered by a lowly jackal.
ब्राह्मणस्वे हृते चोरैर्धर्मार्थे च विलोपिते । रोरूयमाणे च मयि क्रियतामस्त्रधारणम् ॥१-२०५-९॥
brāhmaṇasve hṛte corairdharmārthe ca vilopite । rorūyamāṇe ca mayi kriyatāmastradhāraṇam ॥1-205-9॥
[ब्राह्मणस्वे (brāhmaṇasve) - in the property of a Brāhmaṇa; हृते (hṛte) - having been stolen; चोरैः (coraiḥ) - by thieves; धर्मार्थे (dharmārthe) - for the sake of righteousness; च (ca) - and; विलोपिते (vilopite) - having been destroyed; रोरूयमाणे (rorūyamāṇe) - crying out; च (ca) - and; मयि (mayi) - in me; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अस्त्रधारणम् (astradhāraṇam) - bearing of weapons;]
(In the property of a Brāhmaṇa having been stolen by thieves, and for the sake of righteousness having been destroyed, and with me crying out, let the bearing of weapons be done.)
When the property of a Brāhmaṇa has been stolen by thieves, and righteousness has been destroyed, and I am crying out, let the bearing of weapons be undertaken.
रोरूयमाणस्याभ्याशे तस्य विप्रस्य पाण्डवः । तानि वाक्यानि शुश्राव कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः ॥१-२०५-१०॥
rorūyamāṇasyābhyāśe tasya viprasya pāṇḍavaḥ । tāni vākyāni śuśrāva kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ ॥1-205-10॥

(Near the one who was weeping, of him, of the Brāhmaṇa, the Pāṇḍava; those words heard the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).)
The Pāṇḍava, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the son of Kuntī, heard those words near the weeping Brāhmaṇa.
श्रुत्वा चैव महाबाहुर्मा भैरित्याह तं द्विजम् । आयुधानि च यत्रासन्पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥ कृष्णया सह तत्रासीद्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१-२०५-११॥
śrutvā caiva mahābāhur mā bhair ity āha taṃ dvijam । āyudhāni ca yatrāsan pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām ॥ kṛṣṇayā saha tatrāsīd dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥1-205-11॥

(Having heard, indeed, the mighty-armed (Bhīma) said to that twice-born, 'Do not fear.' And where the weapons of the great-souled Pāṇḍavas were, there, together with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), was Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Hearing this, the mighty-armed Bhīma reassured the brāhmaṇa, saying, 'Do not be afraid.' At the place where the weapons of the noble Pāṇḍavas were kept, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira was present there with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī).
स प्रवेशाय चाशक्तो गमनाय च पाण्डवः । तस्य चार्तस्य तैर्वाक्यैश्चोद्यमानः पुनः पुनः ॥ आक्रन्दे तत्र कौन्तेयश्चिन्तयामास दुःखितः ॥१-२०५-१२॥
sa praveśāya cāśakto gamanāya ca pāṇḍavaḥ । tasya cārtasya tair vākyaiś codyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥ ākrande tatra kaunteyaś cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ ॥1-205-12॥

(He, unable for entering and for going, the Pāṇḍava; of him, the afflicted, by them, by words, being urged again and again; in lamentation there, the son of Kunti thought, distressed.)
The Pāṇḍava, unable to enter or to go, being afflicted, was repeatedly urged by their words; there, in lamentation, the son of Kunti, distressed, thought.
ह्रियमाणे धने तस्मिन्ब्राह्मणस्य तपस्विनः । अश्रुप्रमार्जनं तस्य कर्तव्यमिति निश्चितः ॥१-२०५-१३॥
hriyamāṇe dhane tasminbrāhmaṇasya tapasvinaḥ । aśrupramārjanaṃ tasya kartavyamiti niścitaḥ ॥1-205-13॥

(When the wealth of that ascetic brāhmaṇa was being taken away, it was decided that wiping his tears was to be done thus.)
It was determined that, as the wealth of that ascetic brāhmaṇa was being taken away, wiping his tears was the proper action.
उपप्रेक्षणजोऽधर्मः सुमहान्स्यान्महीपतेः । यद्यस्य रुदतो द्वारि न करोम्यद्य रक्षणम् ॥१-२०५-१४॥
upaprekṣaṇajo'dharmaḥ sumahān syān mahīpateḥ । yady asya rudato dvāri na karomy adya rakṣaṇam ॥1-205-14॥
[उपप्रेक्षणजः (upaprekṣaṇajaḥ) - arising from observation; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the king; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्य (asya) - of him; रुदतः (rudataḥ) - weeping; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; न (na) - not; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अद्य (adya) - today; रक्षणम् (rakṣaṇam) - protection;]
(Unrighteousness arising from observation would be very great for the king, if I do not provide protection today at the door to this weeping one.)
If I do not provide protection today at the door to this weeping person, it would be a great unrighteousness arising from observation for the king.
अनास्तिक्यं च सर्वेषामस्माकमपि रक्षणे । प्रतितिष्ठेत लोकेऽस्मिन्नधर्मश्चैव नो भवेत् ॥१-२०५-१५॥
anāstikyaṃ ca sarveṣāmasmākamapi rakṣaṇe । pratitiṣṭheta loke'sminnadharmaścaiva no bhavet ॥1-205-15॥
[अनास्तिक्यं (anāstikyam) - atheism; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; अपि (api) - also; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; प्रतितिष्ठेत (pratitiṣṭheta) - should be established; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(Atheism and for all of us also in protection should be established; in this world unrighteousness indeed for us should not be.)
Atheism should be protected for all of us; in this world, unrighteousness should not arise for us.
अनापृच्छ्य च राजानं गते मयि न संशयः । अजातशत्रोर्नृपतेर्मम चैवाप्रियं भवेत् ॥१-२०५-१६॥
anāpṛcchya ca rājānaṃ gate mayi na saṃśayaḥ । ajātaśatror nṛpater mama caivāpriyaṃ bhavet ॥1-205-16॥
[अनापृच्छ्य (anāpṛcchya) - without asking leave; च (ca) - and; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; गते (gate) - having gone; मयि (mayi) - I; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अजातशत्रोः (ajātaśatroḥ) - of Ajātaśatru; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अप्रियं (apriyaṃ) - unpleasant; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Without asking leave of the king, and with me having gone, there is no doubt: for Ajātaśatru, the king, and for me indeed, it would be unpleasant.)
If I leave without asking the king, there is no doubt that it would be unpleasant for Ajātaśatru, the king, and for myself.
अनुप्रवेशे राज्ञस्तु वनवासो भवेन्मम । अधर्मो वा महानस्तु वने वा मरणं मम ॥ शरीरस्यापि नाशेन धर्म एव विशिष्यते ॥१-२०५-१७॥
anupraveśe rājñas tu vanavāso bhaven mama । adharmo vā mahān as tu vane vā maraṇaṃ mama ॥ śarīrasyāpi nāśena dharma eva viśiṣyate ॥1-205-17॥
[अनुप्रवेशे (anupraveśe) - upon entering; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; वनवासः (vanavāsaḥ) - forest-dwelling; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; मम (mama) - for me; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; वा (vā) - or; महान् (mahān) - great; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; वने (vane) - in the forest; वा (vā) - or; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; मम (mama) - for me; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; अपि (api) - even; नाशेन (nāśena) - by destruction; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; एव (eva) - indeed; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels; ॥१-२०५-१७॥ (॥1-205-17॥) -;]
(Upon entering (the city) of the king, but forest-dwelling would be for me. Unrighteousness or great let it be, or in the forest, or death for me. Even by the destruction of the body, righteousness indeed excels.)
If I enter the city of the king, then for me it would be forest-dwelling; let there be great unrighteousness or even death in the forest for me. Even by the destruction of the body, righteousness alone excels.
एवं विनिश्चित्य ततः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः । अनुप्रविश्य राजानमापृच्छ्य च विशां पते ॥१-२०५-१८॥
evaṃ viniścitya tataḥ kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ । anupraviśya rājānamāpṛcchya ca viśāṃ pate ॥1-205-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having ascertained; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; अनुप्रविश्य (anupraviśya) - having entered; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; आपृच्छ्य (āpṛcchya) - having respectfully addressed; च (ca) - and; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Thus, having ascertained, then the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, having entered, having respectfully addressed the king and O lord of the people.)
Thus, having made up his mind, then Kuntī's son Dhanañjaya entered and, after respectfully addressing the king, O lord of the people.
धनुरादाय संहृष्टो ब्राह्मणं प्रत्यभाषत । ब्राह्मणागम्यतां शीघ्रं यावत्परधनैषिणः ॥१-२०५-१९॥
dhanur-ādāya saṃhṛṣṭaḥ brāhmaṇaṃ pratyabhāṣata । brāhmaṇa āgamyatāṃ śīghraṃ yāvat paradhanaiṣiṇaḥ ॥1-205-19॥
[धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; संहृष्टः (saṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - gladdened; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the brāhmaṇa; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - O brāhmaṇa; आगम्यताम् (āgamyatām) - come; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; परधनैषिणः (paradhanaiṣiṇaḥ) - those who desire others' wealth;]
(Having taken the bow, gladdened, he addressed the brāhmaṇa: "O brāhmaṇa, come quickly as long as those who desire others' wealth (are here).")
He took up his bow joyfully and addressed the brāhmaṇa: "O brāhmaṇa, come quickly before those who seek others' wealth arrive."
न दूरे ते गताः क्षुद्रास्तावद्गच्छामहे सह । यावदावर्तयाम्यद्य चोरहस्ताद्धनं तव ॥१-२०५-२०॥
na dūre te gatāḥ kṣudrās tāvad gacchāmahe saha । yāvad āvartayāmy adya cora-hastād dhanaṃ tava ॥1-205-20॥
[न (na) - not; दूरे (dūre) - far; ते (te) - they; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; क्षुद्राः (kṣudrāḥ) - petty ones; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; गच्छामहे (gacchāmahe) - let us go; सह (saha) - together; यावत् (yāvat) - until; आवर्तयामि (āvartayāmi) - I recover; अद्य (adya) - today; चोरहस्तात् (cora-hastāt) - from the thief's hand; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; तव (tava) - your;]
(Not far have they gone, the petty ones; so long, let us go together, until I recover today your wealth from the thief's hand.)
The petty thieves have not gone far; let us go together for now, until I recover your wealth from the thief's hand today.
सोऽनुसृत्य महाबाहुर्धन्वी वर्मी रथी ध्वजी । शरैर्विध्वंसितांश्चोरानवजित्य च तद्धनम् ॥१-२०५-२१॥
so'nusṛtya mahābāhur dhanvī varmī rathī dhvajī | śarair vidhvaṃsitāṃś corān avajitya ca tad dhanam ||1-205-21||
[सः (saḥ) - he; अनुसृत्य (anusṛtya) - having followed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; धन्वी (dhanvī) - armed with a bow; वर्मी (varmī) - wearing armor; रथी (rathī) - rider of a chariot; ध्वजी (dhvajī) - bearing a banner; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; विध्वंसितान् (vidhvaṃsitān) - destroyed; चोरान् (corān) - thieves; अवजित्य (avajitya) - having conquered; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(He, having followed, the mighty-armed, armed with a bow, wearing armor, rider of a chariot, bearing a banner, with arrows, the destroyed thieves, having conquered, and that wealth.)
He, the mighty-armed, armed with a bow, clad in armor, riding a chariot and bearing a banner, having followed and destroyed the thieves with arrows, recovered that wealth.
ब्राह्मणस्य उपाहृत्य यशः पीत्वा च पाण्डवः । आजगाम पुरं वीरः सव्यसाची परन्तपः ॥१-२०५-२२॥
brāhmaṇasya upāhṛtya yaśaḥ pītvā ca pāṇḍavaḥ । ājagāma puraṃ vīraḥ savyasācī parantapaḥ ॥1-205-22॥
[ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; उपाहृत्य (upāhṛtya) - having taken; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; पुरं (puraṃ) - to the city; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasācī (Arjuna, ambidextrous); परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes;]
(The Pāṇḍava, having taken the fame of the Brāhmaṇa and having drunk (it), the hero Savyasācī, the scorcher of foes, arrived at the city.)
Having acquired the Brāhmaṇa's fame and glory, the heroic Savyasācī (Arjuna), the subduer of enemies, came to the city.
सोऽभिवाद्य गुरून्सर्वांस्तैश्चापि प्रतिनन्दितः । धर्मराजमुवाचेदं व्रतमादिश्यतां मम ॥१-२०५-२३॥
so'bhivādya gurūn sarvān taiś ca api pratinanditaḥ । dharmarājam uvāca idaṃ vratam ādiśyatām mama ॥1-205-23॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; गुरून् (gurūn) - teachers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रतिनन्दितः (pratinanditaḥ) - greeted in return; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; आदिश्यताम् (ādiśyatām) - let it be instructed; मम (mama) - to me;]
(He, having saluted all the teachers, and being greeted in return by them, said to Dharmarāja: "Let this vow be instructed to me.")
After saluting all the teachers and being greeted in return, he said to Dharmarāja, "Please instruct me in this vow."
समयः समतिक्रान्तो भवत्संदर्शनान्मया । वनवासं गमिष्यामि समयो ह्येष नः कृतः ॥१-२०५-२४॥
samayaḥ samatikrānto bhavatsaṃdarśanānmayā । vanavāsaṃ gamiṣyāmi samayo hyeṣa naḥ kṛtaḥ ॥1-205-24॥
[समयः (samayaḥ) - time; समतिक्रान्तः (samatikrāntaḥ) - has passed; भवत्संदर्शनात् (bhavatsaṃdarśanāt) - from seeing you; मया (mayā) - by me; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest dwelling; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; समयः (samayaḥ) - time; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नः (naḥ) - for us; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been fixed;]
(Time has passed from seeing you by me. I shall go to forest dwelling; indeed, this time has been fixed for us.)
The time for me to see you has passed. I must now go to the forest, for this is the time that has been set for us.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजस्तु सहसा वाक्यमप्रियम् । कथमित्यब्रवीद्वाचा शोकार्तः सज्जमानया ॥ युधिष्ठिरो गुडाकेशं भ्राता भ्रातरमच्युतम् ॥१-२०५-२५॥
ityukto dharmarājastu sahasā vākyam-apriyam । katham-ityabravīd-vācā śokārtaḥ sajjamānayā ॥ yudhiṣṭhiro guḍākeśaṃ bhrātā bhrātaram-acyutam ॥1-205-25॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; तु (tu) - but; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; कथम् (katham) - how; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वाचा (vācā) - with voice; शोक-आर्तः (śoka-ārtaḥ) - afflicted by grief; सज्जमानया (sajjamānayā) - with trembling (voice); युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; गुडाकेशम् (guḍākeśam) - Guḍākeśa; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to brother; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - Acyuta;]
(Thus addressed, Dharmarāja, but suddenly (hearing) the unpleasant words, "How?"—said with a voice afflicted by grief and trembling; Yudhiṣṭhira (said) to Guḍākeśa, the brother, to the brother Acyuta.)
Thus, when addressed, Dharmarāja, suddenly hearing the unpleasant words, said with a trembling, grief-stricken voice, "How?" Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to Guḍākeśa, his brother, and to Acyuta, his brother.
प्रमाणमस्मि यदि ते मत्तः शृणु वचोऽनघ । अनुप्रवेशे यद्वीर कृतवांस्त्वं ममाप्रियम् ॥ सर्वं तदनुजानामि व्यलीकं न च मे हृदि ॥१-२०५-२६॥
pramāṇamasmi yadi te mattaḥ śṛṇu vaco'nagha । anupraveśe yad vīra kṛtavāṁstvaṁ mamāpriyam ॥ sarvaṁ tadanujānāmi vyalīkaṁ na ca me hṛdi ॥1-205-26॥
[प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - evidence; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; अनुप्रवेशे (anupraveśe) - in entering; यत् (yat) - which; वीर (vīra) - O hero; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - you have done; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मम (mama) - my; अप्रियं (apriyam) - unpleasant; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; तत् (tat) - that; अनुजानामि (anujānāmi) - I permit; व्यलीकं (vyalīkaṁ) - wrong; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - in me; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart;]
(I am evidence; if to you from me, hear the word, O sinless one. In entering, which, O hero, you have done my unpleasant (act), all that I permit; wrong is not in my heart.)
I am the witness; if you wish, hear my words, O sinless one. In the matter of entering, O hero, whatever unpleasant act you have done to me, I forgive all that; there is no wrong in my heart.
गुरोरनुप्रवेशो हि नोपघातो यवीयसः । यवीयसोऽनुप्रवेशो ज्येष्ठस्य विधिलोपकः ॥१-२०५-२७॥
guroranupraveśo hi nopaghāto yavīyasaḥ । yavīyaso'nupraveśo jyeṣṭhasya vidhilopakaḥ ॥1-205-27॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the elder; (guru, genitive singular) अनुप्रवेशः (anupraveśaḥ) - entry after; (anu + pra + viś, nominative singular) हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; उपघातः (upaghātaḥ) - injury; (upaghāta, nominative singular) यवीयसः (yavīyasaḥ) - of the younger; (yavīyas, genitive singular) यवीयसः (yavīyasaḥ) - of the younger; (yavīyas, genitive singular) अनुप्रवेशः (anupraveśaḥ) - entry after; (anu + pra + viś, nominative singular) ज्येष्ठस्य (jyeṣṭhasya) - of the elder; (jyeṣṭha, genitive singular) विधिलोपकः (vidhilopakaḥ) - causing omission of rule; (vidhi + lopaka, nominative singular);]
(The entry after the elder indeed is not an injury to the younger. The entry after the younger causes omission of the rule of the elder.)
Entering after the elder is not considered an injury to the younger; but entering after the younger causes the omission of the rule pertaining to the elder.
निवर्तस्व महाबाहो कुरुष्व वचनं मम । न हि ते धर्मलोपोऽस्ति न च मे धर्षणा कृता ॥१-२०५-२८॥
nivartasva mahābāho kuruṣva vacanaṃ mama । na hi te dharmalopo'sti na ca me dharṣaṇā kṛtā ॥1-205-28॥

(Turn back, O mighty-armed, do my word. Indeed, there is no loss of dharma for you, nor has any outrage been done to me.)
O mighty-armed one, turn back and do as I say. Truly, you have not lost dharma, nor have I been insulted in any way.

na vyājena cared dharmam iti me bhavataḥ śrutam । na satyād vicaliṣyāmi satyenāyudham ālabhe ॥1-205-29॥

(Not by deceit should one practice dharma—thus I have heard from you. I shall not deviate from truth; with truth I take up the weapon.)
I have heard from you that one should not practice dharma by deceit. I will not stray from truth; I take up my weapon with truth.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

सोऽभ्यनुज्ञाप्य राजानं ब्रह्मचर्याय दीक्षितः । वने द्वादश वर्षाणि वासायोपजगाम ह ॥१-२०५-३०॥
so'bhyanujñāpya rājānaṃ brahmacaryāya dīkṣitaḥ । vane dvādaśa varṣāṇi vāsāyopajagāma ha ॥1-205-30॥

(He, having obtained permission from the king, initiated for celibate student life, in the forest, for twelve years, for dwelling, indeed approached.)
He, having received the king's permission, was initiated for the vow of celibacy and went to dwell in the forest for twelve years.
