Pancharatra: Jarasanda’s two halves united by Jara
वासुदेव उवाच॥
vāsudeva uvāca॥

Vāsudeva said.
जातस्य भारते वंशे तथा कुन्त्याः सुतस्य च। या वै युक्ता मतिः सेयमर्जुनेन प्रदर्शिता ॥२-१६-१॥
jātasya bhārate vaṃśe tathā kuntyāḥ sutasya ca। yā vai yuktā matiḥ seyam arjunena pradarśitā ॥2-16-1॥
[जातस्य (jātasya) - of the one born; भारते (bhārate) - in the Bharata; वंशे (vaṃśe) - in the lineage; तथा (tathā) - also; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kunti; सुतस्य (sutasya) - of the son; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; युक्ता (yuktā) - joined; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; सा (sā) - that; इयम् (iyam) - this; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; प्रदर्शिता (pradarśitā) - demonstrated;]
(Of the one born in the Bharata lineage and also of the son of Kunti, the mind which indeed is joined, that this has been demonstrated by Arjuna.)
The mind that is united, which belongs to one born in the Bharata lineage and is the son of Kunti, has indeed been demonstrated by Arjuna. (2-16-1)
न मृत्योः समयं विद्म रात्रौ वा यदि वा दिवा। न चापि कञ्चिदमरमयुद्धेनापि शुश्रुमः ॥२-१६-२॥
na mṛtyoḥ samayaṃ vidma rātrau vā yadi vā divā। na cāpi kañcid amaram ayuddhena api śuśrumaḥ ॥2-16-2॥
[न (na) - not; मृत्योः (mṛtyoḥ) - of death; समयं (samayaṃ) - time; विद्म (vidma) - we know; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दिवा (divā) - by day; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; अमरम् (amaram) - immortal; अयुद्धेन (ayuddhena) - without battle; अपि (api) - even; शुश्रुमः (śuśrumaḥ) - we have heard;]
(We do not know the time of death, whether at night or by day. Nor have we heard of anyone becoming immortal even without battle.)
We do not know the time of death, whether it is at night or during the day. Nor have we ever heard of anyone attaining immortality without engaging in battle. (2-16-2)
एतावदेव पुरुषैः कार्यं हृदयतोषणम्। नयेन विधिदृष्टेन यदुपक्रमते परान् ॥२-१६-३॥
etāvad eva puruṣaiḥ kāryaṃ hṛdayatoṣaṇam। nayena vidhidṛṣṭena yad upakramate parān ॥2-16-3॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - so much; only; एव (eva) - indeed; only; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; duty; हृदयतोषणम् (hṛdayatoṣaṇam) - heart-pleasing; giving satisfaction to the heart; नयेन (nayena) - by policy; by conduct; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - as prescribed by rule; as seen in law; यत् (yat) - which; उपक्रमते (upakramate) - approaches; undertakes; परान् (parān) - others;]
(So much indeed by men is to be done, that which is heart-pleasing; by policy as prescribed by rule, which approaches others.)
Men should only do that which pleases the heart, approaching others by policy as prescribed by rule. (2-16-3)
सुनयस्यानपायस्य संयुगे परमः क्रमः। संशयो जायते साम्ये साम्यं च न भवेद्द्वयोः ॥२-१६-४॥
sunayasyānapāyasya saṃyuge paramaḥ kramaḥ। saṃśayo jāyate sāmye sāmyaṃ ca na bhaveddvayoḥ ॥2-16-4॥
[सुनयस्यानपायस्य (sunayasyānapāyasya) - of the wise and of the blameless; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in conflict; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; क्रमः (kramaḥ) - order; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; जायते (jāyate) - arises; साम्ये (sāmye) - in equality; साम्यं (sāmyaṃ) - equality; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two;]
(Of the wise and of the blameless, in conflict, supreme order. Doubt arises in equality; equality also would not be of the two.)
Among the wise and the blameless, in conflict, the highest order prevails. When there is equality, doubt arises; and equality would not exist between the two. (2-16-4)
ते वयं नयमास्थाय शत्रुदेहसमीपगाः। कथमन्तं न गच्छेम वृक्षस्येव नदीरयाः ॥ पररन्ध्रे पराक्रान्ताः स्वरन्ध्रावरणे स्थिताः ॥२-१६-५॥
te vayaṃ nayam āsthāya śatrudehasamīpagāḥ। katham antaṃ na gacchema vṛkṣasyeva nadīrayaḥ॥ pararandhre parākrāntāḥ svarandhrāvaraṇe sthitāḥ॥2-16-5॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; नयम् (nayam) - policy; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having adopted; शत्रु (śatru) - enemy; देह (deha) - body; समीपगाः (samīpagāḥ) - approaching; कथम् (katham) - how; अन्तम् (antam) - end; न (na) - not; गच्छेम (gacchema) - would reach; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of the tree; इव (iva) - like; नदीरयाः (nadīrayaḥ) - streams; पररन्ध्रे (pararandhre) - in the breach of the enemy; पराक्रान्ताः (parākrāntāḥ) - having advanced; स्वरन्ध्रावरणे (svarandhrāvaraṇe) - in the protection of our own breach; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing;]
(They, we having adopted policy, approaching the enemy's body. How would we not reach the end, like streams of a tree? Having advanced in the breach of the enemy, standing in the protection of our own breach. (2-16-5))
Having adopted a strategy, we approach the enemy's body. How could we not reach the end, like streams reach the root of a tree? We have advanced into the enemy's breach, while standing guard over our own. (2-16-5)
व्यूढानीकैरनुबलैर्नोपेयाद्बलवत्तरम्। इति बुद्धिमतां नीतिस्तन्ममापीह रोचते ॥२-१६-६॥
vyūḍhānīkair anubalair no peyād balavattaram। iti buddhimatāṃ nītis tan mamāpīha rocate ॥2-16-6॥
[व्यूढ (vyūḍha) - arrayed; अनीकैः (anīkaiḥ) - by armies; अनुबलैः (anubalaiḥ) - by supporting forces; न (na) - not; उपेयात् (upeyāt) - should approach; बलवत्तरम् (balavattaram) - stronger; इति (iti) - thus; बुद्धिमताम् (buddhimatām) - of the wise; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - policy; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; इह (iha) - here; रोचते (rocate) - pleases;]
(One should not approach a stronger (enemy) with arrayed armies and supporting forces; thus is the policy of the wise, that also pleases me here.)
It is the policy of the wise not to approach a stronger enemy with arrayed armies and supporting forces; this policy also pleases me here. (2-16-6)
अनवद्या ह्यसम्बुद्धाः प्रविष्टाः शत्रुसद्म तत्। शत्रुदेहमुपाक्रम्य तं कामं प्राप्नुयामहे ॥२-१६-७॥
anavadyā hy asambuddhāḥ praviṣṭāḥ śatrusadma tat। śatrudeham upākramya taṃ kāmaṃ prāpnuyāmahe ॥2-16-7॥
[अनवद्या (anavadyā) - blameless; हि (hi) - indeed; असम्बुद्धाः (asambuddhāḥ) - unnoticed; प्रविष्टाः (praviṣṭāḥ) - having entered; शत्रुसद्म (śatrusadma) - enemy's house; तत् (tat) - that; शत्रुदेहम् (śatrudeham) - enemy's body; उपाक्रम्य (upākramya) - having approached; तम् (tam) - him; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; प्राप्नुयामहे (prāpnuyāmahe) - we may obtain;]
(Blameless indeed, unnoticed, having entered that enemy's house, having approached the enemy's body, him, desire, we may obtain.)
Indeed, being blameless and unnoticed, having entered that enemy's house and approached his body, we may obtain our desire. (2-16-7)
एको ह्येव श्रियं नित्यं बिभर्ति पुरुषर्षभ। अन्तरात्मेव भूतानां तत्क्षये वै बलक्षयः ॥२-१६-८॥
eko hy eva śriyaṃ nityaṃ bibharti puruṣarṣabha. antarātmeva bhūtānāṃ tatkṣaye vai balakṣayaḥ ॥2-16-8॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - only; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - bears; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; अन्तरात्मा (antarātmā) - inner self; इव (iva) - like; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; तत् (tat) - that; क्षये (kṣaye) - in destruction; वै (vai) - indeed; बलक्षयः (balakṣayaḥ) - loss of strength;]
(One indeed only always bears prosperity, O best of men; like the inner self of beings, in that destruction indeed is the loss of strength.)
O best of men, only one always bears prosperity; just as the inner self is for beings, so too, when that is destroyed, there is indeed a loss of strength. (2-16-8)
अथ चेत्तं निहत्याजौ शेषेणाभिसमागताः। प्राप्नुयाम ततः स्वर्गं ज्ञातित्राणपरायणाः ॥२-१६-९॥
atha cettam nihatyaājau śeṣeṇābhisamāgatāḥ। prāpnuyāma tataḥ svargaṃ jñātitrāṇaparāyaṇāḥ ॥2-16-9॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; चेत् (cet) - if; तं (tam) - him; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; शेषेण (śeṣeṇa) - with the remnant; अभिसमागताः (abhisamāgatāḥ) - having approached; having come together; प्राप्नुयाम (prāpnuyāma) - may we attain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; ज्ञातित्राणपरायणाः (jñātitrāṇaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to the protection of relatives;]
(Now, if having slain him in battle, having come together with the remnant, may we then attain heaven, devoted to the protection of relatives.)
Now, if, having slain him in battle and joined with the remaining ones, we may then attain heaven, being devoted to the protection of our relatives. (2-16-9)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

कृष्ण कोऽयं जरासन्धः किंवीर्यः किम्पराक्रमः। यस्त्वां स्पृष्ट्वाग्निसदृशं न दग्धः शलभो यथा ॥२-१६-१०॥
kṛṣṇa ko'yaṃ jarāsandhaḥ kiṃvīryaḥ kimparākramaḥ। yastvāṃ spṛṣṭvāgnisadṛśaṃ na dagdhaḥ śalabho yathā ॥2-16-10॥
[कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; किंवीर्यः (kiṃvīryaḥ) - of what valor; किम्पराक्रमः (kimparākramaḥ) - of what prowess; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; अग्निसदृशम् (agnisadṛśam) - like fire; न (na) - not; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burnt; शलभः (śalabhaḥ) - moth; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Kṛṣṇa, who is this Jarāsandha, of what valor, of what prowess, who, having touched you, like fire, was not burnt, as a moth?)
Kṛṣṇa, who is this Jarāsandha? What is his valor, what is his prowess, that, having touched you—who are like fire—he was not burnt, like a moth? (2-16-10)

शृणु राजञ्जरासन्धो यद्वीर्यो यत्पराक्रमः। यथा चोपेक्षितोऽस्माभिर्बहुशः कृतविप्रियः ॥२-१६-११॥
śṛṇu rājan jarāsandho yad vīryo yat parākramaḥ। yathā ca upekṣitaḥ asmābhiḥ bahuśaḥ kṛta-vipriyaḥ ॥2-16-11॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; यत् (yat) - what; वीर्यः (vīryaḥ) - strength; यत् (yat) - what; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valor; यथा (yathā) - how; च (ca) - and; उपेक्षितः (upekṣitaḥ) - neglected; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; कृतविप्रियः (kṛta-vipriyaḥ) - having done harm;]
(Hear, O king, what strength, what valor Jarāsandha (has), and how, having done harm, he has been neglected by us many times.)
Hear, O king, of the strength and valor of Jarāsandha, and how he, having done much harm, has often been disregarded by us. (2-16-11)
अक्षौहिणीनां तिसृणामासीत्समरदर्पितः। राजा बृहद्रथो नाम मगधाधिपतिः पतिः ॥२-१६-१२॥
akṣauhiṇīnām tisṛṇām āsīt samara-darpitaḥ। rājā bṛhadratho nāma magadhādhipatiḥ patiḥ ॥2-16-12॥
[अक्षौहिणीनाम् (akṣauhiṇīnām) - of the akṣauhiṇīs; तिसृणाम् (tisṛṇām) - of three; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; समरदर्पितः (samara-darpitaḥ) - proud in battle; राजा (rājā) - king; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha; नाम (nāma) - named; मगधाधिपतिः (magadhādhipatiḥ) - lord of Magadha; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;]
(Of the akṣauhiṇīs, of three, there was, proud in battle, king Bṛhadratha named, lord of Magadha, lord.)
There was a king named Bṛhadratha, lord of Magadha, proud in battle, who commanded three akṣauhiṇīs. (2-16-12)
रूपवान्वीर्यसम्पन्नः श्रीमानतुलविक्रमः। नित्यं दीक्षाकृशतनुः शतक्रतुरिवापरः ॥२-१६-१३॥
rūpavān vīryasampannaḥ śrīmān atulavikramaḥ। nityaṃ dīkṣākṛśatanuḥ śatakratur ivāparaḥ ॥2-16-13॥
[रूपवान् (rūpavān) - possessing beauty; वीर्यसम्पन्नः (vīryasampannaḥ) - endowed with strength; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessing fortune; अतुलविक्रमः (atulavikramaḥ) - of incomparable valor; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; दीक्षा (dīkṣā) - consecration; कृशतनुः (kṛśatanuḥ) - with a slender body; शतक्रतु (śatakratu) - Indra; इव (iva) - like; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another;]
(Possessing beauty, endowed with strength, possessing fortune, of incomparable valor; always with a slender body due to consecration, another like Indra.)
He is handsome, strong, fortunate, and of incomparable valor; always emaciated by consecration, he is like another Indra. (2-16-13)
तेजसा सूर्यसदृशः क्षमया पृथिवीसमः। यमान्तकसमः कोपे श्रिया वैश्रवणोपमः ॥२-१६-१४॥
tejasā sūryasadṛśaḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamaḥ। yamāntakasamaḥ kope śriyā vaiśravaṇopamaḥ ॥2-16-14॥
[तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; सूर्यसदृशः (sūryasadṛśaḥ) - like the sun; क्षमया (kṣamayā) - by forbearance; पृथिवीसमः (pṛthivīsamaḥ) - equal to the earth; यमान्तकसमः (yamāntakasamaḥ) - like Yama's destroyer (Yamāntaka); कोपे (kope) - in anger; श्रिया (śriyā) - by wealth; वैश्रवणोपमः (vaiśravaṇopamaḥ) - like Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera);]
(By brilliance, like the sun; by forbearance, equal to the earth; in anger, like Yamāntaka; by wealth, like Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera).)
He was as radiant as the sun, as patient as the earth, as fearsome as Yamāntaka when angry, and as wealthy as Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). (2-16-14)
तस्याभिजनसंयुक्तैर्गुणैर्भरतसत्तम। व्याप्तेयं पृथिवी सर्वा सूर्यस्येव गभस्तिभिः ॥२-१६-१५॥
tasyābhijana-saṃyuktair guṇair bharata-sattama। vyāptā iyam pṛthivī sarvā sūryasya iva gabhastibhiḥ ॥2-16-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अभिजन (abhijana) - noble birth; संयुक्तैः (saṃyuktaiḥ) - endowed with; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of the Bharatas; व्याप्ता (vyāptā) - pervaded; इयं (iyam) - this; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; इव (iva) - like; गभस्तिभिः (gabhastibhiḥ) - by the rays;]
(O best of the Bharatas, this entire earth is pervaded by his noble birth and qualities, just as by the rays of the sun.)

स काशिराजस्य सुते यमजे भरतर्षभ। उपयेमे महावीर्यो रूपद्रविणसंमते ॥२-१६-१६॥

(He, the bull among the Bharatas, married the daughter of the king of Kāśi, born of Yama, the one of great prowess, approved for beauty and wealth.)
He, the foremost of the Bharatas, married the daughter of the king of Kāśi, who was born of Yama, a woman of great beauty and wealth, and himself a man of great prowess. (2-16-16)
तयोश्चकार समयं मिथः स पुरुषर्षभः। नातिवर्तिष्य इत्येवं पत्नीभ्यां संनिधौ तदा ॥२-१६-१७॥
tayoś cakāra samayaṃ mithaḥ sa puruṣarṣabhaḥ। nātivartiṣya ityevaṃ patnībhyāṃ saṃnidhau tadā ॥2-16-17॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; चकार (cakāra) - made; समयं (samayaṃ) - agreement; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; सः (saḥ) - he; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; न (na) - not; अतिवर्तिष्य (ativartiṣya) - will transgress; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; पत्नीभ्याम् (patnībhyām) - in the presence of the two wives; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Of those two, he, the bull among men, made a mutual agreement: 'I will not transgress thus'—then, in the presence of the two wives.)
He, the foremost among men, made a mutual agreement between the two, declaring in the presence of his wives, 'I will not transgress in this way.' (2-16-17)
स ताभ्यां शुशुभे राजा पत्नीभ्यां मनुजाधिप। प्रियाभ्यामनुरूपाभ्यां करेणुभ्यामिव द्विपः ॥२-१६-१८॥
sa tābhyāṃ śuśubhe rājā patnībhyāṃ manujādhipaḥ। priyābhyām-anurūpābhyāṃ kareṇubhyām-iva dvipaḥ ॥2-16-18॥
[स (sa) - he; ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - with those two; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; राजा (rājā) - king; पत्नीभ्यां (patnībhyām) - with (his) wives; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipaḥ) - lord of men; प्रियाभ्याम् (priyābhyām) - with beloved (ones); अनुरूपाभ्याम् (anurūpābhyām) - with suitable (ones); करेणुभ्याम् (kareṇubhyām) - with two female elephants; इव (iva) - like; द्विपः (dvipaḥ) - elephant;]
(He with those two shone, the king, with (his) wives, the lord of men; with beloved, with suitable, with two female elephants like an elephant.)
The king, lord of men, shone with his two wives, just as an elephant shines with two suitable and beloved female elephants. (2-16-18)
तयोर्मध्यगतश्चापि रराज वसुधाधिपः। गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये मूर्तिमानिव सागरः ॥२-१६-१९॥
tayormadhyagataścāpi rarāja vasudhādhipaḥ। gaṅgāyamunayormadhye mūrtimāniva sāgaraḥ ॥2-16-19॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; मध्यगतः (madhyagataḥ) - situated in the middle; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रराज (rarāja) - shone; वसुधाधिपः (vasudhādhipaḥ) - the lord of the earth; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; यमुनयोः (yamunayoḥ) - of Yamunā (and); मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - embodied; इव (iva) - as if; सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - the ocean;]
(And the lord of the earth, situated in the middle of those two, also shone. In the middle of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, he was as if the ocean embodied.)
The king, positioned between the two rivers, shone brilliantly, appearing like the very ocean incarnate between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā. (2-16-19)
विषयेषु निमग्नस्य तस्य यौवनमत्यगात्। न च वंशकरः पुत्रस्तस्याजायत कश्चन ॥२-१६-२०॥
viṣayeṣu nimagnasya tasya yauvanam atyagāt। na ca vaṃśakaraḥ putras tasyājāyata kaścana ॥2-16-20॥
[विषयेषु (viṣayeṣu) - in the objects of sense; निमग्नस्य (nimagnasya) - of the one immersed; तस्य (tasya) - his; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - passed away; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वंशकरः (vaṃśakaraḥ) - lineage-maker; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तस्य (tasya) - his; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; कश्चन (kaścana) - any;]
(In the objects of sense, of the one immersed, his youth passed away. And not any son, lineage-maker, was born to him.)
Absorbed in sense pleasures, his youth slipped away, and he had no son to continue his lineage. (2-16-20)
मङ्गलैर्बहुभिर्होमैः पुत्रकामाभिरिष्टिभिः। नाससाद नृपश्रेष्ठः पुत्रं कुलविवर्धनम् ॥२-१६-२१॥
maṅgalair bahubhir homaiḥ putrakāmābhir iṣṭibhiḥ। nāsasāda nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ putraṃ kulavivardhanam ॥2-16-21॥

(By auspicious rites, by many oblations, by sacrificial offerings performed by those desiring sons, the best of kings did not attain a son who would increase the lineage.)

(Then the son of Kākṣīvata, of Gautama the great-souled, heard Caṇḍakauśika, noble and exhausted in austerity.)

[यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; by accident; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; come; तं (taṃ) - him; that; तु (tu) - but; however; वृक्ष (vṛkṣa) - tree; मूलम् (mūlam) - base; root; उपाश्रितम् (upāśritam) - having taken shelter; resorted to; पत्नीभ्यां (patnībhyām) - with (his) two wives; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; together; राजा (rājā) - king; सर्वरत्नैः (sarvaratnaiḥ) - with all jewels; with all kinds of gems; अतोषयत् (atoṣayat) - satisfied; gratified; pleased;]
(By chance arrived him but at the base of a tree having taken shelter, with his two wives accompanied, the king with all jewels satisfied (him).)
By chance, the king, accompanied by his two wives, satisfied him who had taken shelter at the base of a tree with all kinds of jewels. (2-16-23)
तमब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिः सत्यवागृषिसत्तमः। परितुष्टोऽस्मि ते राजन्वरं वरय सुव्रत ॥२-१६-२४॥
tam abravīt satyadhṛtiḥ satyavāg ṛṣisattamaḥ। parituṣṭo'smi te rājan varaṃ varaya suvrata ॥2-16-24॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सत्यधृतिः (satyadhṛtiḥ) - Satyadhṛti (name); सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaking; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣisattamaḥ) - best among sages; परितुष्टः (parituṣṭaḥ) - completely pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - with you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वरम् (varam) - a boon; वरय (varaya) - choose; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O one of good vows;]
(To him Satyadhṛti, the truth-speaking best among sages, said: "I am completely pleased with you, O king. Choose a boon, O one of good vows.")
Satyadhṛti, the truthful and foremost among sages, said to him: "O king, I am fully pleased with you. O virtuous one, ask for a boon." (2-16-24)

भगवन्राज्यमुत्सृज्य प्रस्थितस्य तपोवनम्। किं वरेणाल्पभाग्यस्य किं राज्येनाप्रजस्य मे ॥२-१६-२६॥
bhagavan-rājyam-utsṛjya prasthitasya tapovanam। kiṃ vareṇa-alpabhāgyasya kiṃ rājyena-aprajasya me ॥2-16-26॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; प्रस्थितस्य (prasthitasya) - of (one who is) departed; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - to the forest of austerities; किं (kiṃ) - what; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; अल्पभाग्यस्य (alpabhāgyasya) - of one with little fortune; किं (kiṃ) - what; राज्येन (rājyena) - with a kingdom; अप्रजस्य (aprajasya) - of one without offspring; मे (me) - to me;]
(O revered one, having abandoned the kingdom, (I am) departed to the forest of austerities. What (use is) a boon to one with little fortune? What (use is) a kingdom to me who is without offspring?)
O revered one, having given up the kingdom, I have set out for the forest of austerities. Of what use is a boon to one of little fortune? Of what use is a kingdom to me who has no offspring? (2-16-26)

एतच्छ्रुत्वा मुनिर्ध्यानमगमत्क्षुभितेन्द्रियः। तस्यैव चाम्रवृक्षस्य छायायां समुपाविशत् ॥२-१६-२७॥
etat-śrutvā munir-dhyānam-agamat-kṣubhita-indriyaḥ। tasyaiva ca āmravṛkṣasya chāyāyām samupāviśat ॥2-16-27॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; ध्यानम् (dhyānam) - meditation; अगमत् (agamat) - entered; क्षुभित (kṣubhita) - agitated; इन्द्रियः (indriyaḥ) - senses; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of that very; च (ca) - and; आम्रवृक्षस्य (āmravṛkṣasya) - of the mango tree; छायायाम् (chāyāyām) - in the shade; समुपाविशत् (samupāviśat) - sat down;]
(Having heard this, the sage, his senses agitated, entered meditation. And in the shade of that very mango tree, he sat down.)
Hearing this, the sage, whose senses were agitated, entered meditation and sat down in the shade of that very mango tree. (2-16-27)
तस्योपविष्टस्य मुनेरुत्सङ्गे निपपात ह। अवातमशुकादष्टमेकमाम्रफलं किल ॥२-१६-२८॥
tasyopaviṣṭasya munerutsaṅge nipapāta ha। avātamaśukādaṣṭamekamāmraphalaṃ kila ॥2-16-28॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; उपविष्टस्य (upaviṣṭasya) - of the one seated; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; उत्सङ्गे (utsaṅge) - in the lap; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; ह (ha) - indeed; अवात (avāta) - blown by the wind; मशुकात् (maśukāt) - from the branch; अष्टम् (aṣṭam) - eighth; एकम् (ekam) - one; आम्रफलं (āmraphalaṃ) - mango fruit; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(Of him, of the one seated, of the sage, in the lap, fell down indeed. Blown by the wind, from the branch, the eighth, one mango fruit indeed.)
As the sage sat, a single eighth mango fruit, blown by the wind from the branch, indeed fell into his lap. (2-16-28)
तत्प्रगृह्य मुनिश्रेष्ठो हृदयेनाभिमन्त्र्य च। राज्ञे ददावप्रतिमं पुत्रसम्प्राप्तिकारकम् ॥२-१६-२९॥
tatpragṛhya muniśreṣṭho hṛdayenābhimantrya ca। rājñe dadāvapratimaṃ putrasamprāptikārakam ॥2-16-29॥
[तत् (tat) - that; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; मुनिश्रेष्ठः (muniśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among sages; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with the heart; अभिमन्त्र्य (abhimantrya) - having consecrated with mantras; च (ca) - and; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; ददौ (dadau) - gave; अप्रतिमम् (apratimam) - incomparable; पुत्रसम्प्राप्तिकारकम् (putrasamprāptikārakam) - causing the obtaining of a son;]
(That having taken, the best among sages, with the heart having consecrated with mantras and to the king gave the incomparable causing the obtaining of a son.)
Having taken that, the best among sages, after consecrating it with his heart and mantras, gave to the king the incomparable object that would cause the obtaining of a son. (2-16-29)
उवाच च महाप्राज्ञस्तं राजानं महामुनिः। गच्छ राजन्कृतार्थोऽसि निवर्त मनुजाधिप ॥२-१६-३०॥
uvāca ca mahāprājñas taṃ rājānaṃ mahāmuniḥ। gaccha rājan kṛtārtho'si nivarta manujādhipa ॥2-16-30॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the great wise one; तं (taṃ) - to him; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is accomplished; असि (asi) - you are; निवर्त (nivarta) - return; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(And the great wise sage said to the king: Go, O king, your purpose is accomplished, return, O lord of men.)
The great sage, full of wisdom, said to the king: "Go, O king, your purpose is accomplished; return, O lord of men." (2-16-30)
यथासमयमाज्ञाय तदा स नृपसत्तमः। द्वाभ्यामेकं फलं प्रादात्पत्नीभ्यां भरतर्षभ ॥२-१६-३१॥
yathāsamayamājñāya tadā sa nṛpasattamaḥ। dvābhyāmekaṃ phalaṃ prādātpatnībhyāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥2-16-31॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in accordance; समयम् (samayam) - time; proper time; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; having perceived; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; सः (saḥ) - he; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - best among kings; द्वाभ्याम् (dvābhyām) - to two; by two; एकम् (ekam) - one; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; पत्नीभ्याम् (patnībhyām) - to the two wives; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Having understood the proper time, then he, the best among kings, gave one fruit to the two wives, O bull among the Bharatas.)

ते तदाम्रं द्विधा कृत्वा भक्षयामासतुः शुभे। भावित्वादपि चार्थस्य सत्यवाक्यात्तथा मुनेः ॥२-१६-३२॥
te tadāmraṃ dvidhā kṛtvā bhakṣayāmāsatuḥ śubhe। bhāvitvād api ca arthasya satyavākyāt tathā muneḥ ॥2-16-32॥
[ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; आम्रं (āmraṃ) - mango; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; भक्षयामासतुः (bhakṣayāmāsatuḥ) - they both ate; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; भावित्वात् (bhāvitvāt) - because of being realized; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अर्थस्य (arthasya) - of the meaning; सत्यवाक्यात् (satyavākyāt) - from the true statement; तथा (tathā) - thus; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage;]
(They, having split that mango in two, both ate, O auspicious one. Also, because of the realization of the meaning, from the true statement of the sage, thus.)
They split that mango in two and both ate it, O auspicious one. Because the meaning was realized, and due to the sage's truthful words, it happened thus. (2-16-32)
तयोः समभवद्गर्भः फलप्राशनसम्भवः। ते च दृष्ट्वा नरपतिः परां मुदमवाप ह ॥२-१६-३३॥
tayoḥ samabhavadgarbhaḥ phalaprāśanasambhavaḥ। te ca dṛṣṭvā narapatiḥ parāṃ mudamavāpa ha ॥2-16-33॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose together; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; फलप्राशन (phalaprāśana) - fruit-eating; सम्भवः (sambhavaḥ) - origin; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नरपतिः (narapatiḥ) - king; पराम् (parām) - supreme; मुदम् (mudam) - joy; अवाप (avāpa) - obtained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Of those two, an embryo arose together, origin from fruit-eating. They, and having seen, the king indeed obtained supreme joy.)
When an embryo arose in both of them as a result of eating the fruit, and when the king saw them, he experienced supreme joy. (2-16-33)
अथ काले महाप्राज्ञ यथासमयमागते। प्रजायेतामुभे राजञ्शरीरशकले तदा ॥२-१६-३४॥
atha kāle mahāprājña yathāsamayamāgate। prajāyetāmubhe rājañśarīraśakale tadā ॥2-16-34॥
[अथ (atha) - then; काले (kāle) - at the time; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; यथासमयम् (yathāsamayam) - as per the proper time; आगते (āgate) - having arrived; प्रजायेताम् (prajāyetām) - would be born; उभे (ubhe) - both; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शरीरशकले (śarīraśakale) - in the two body parts; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, at the time, O greatly wise one, as per the proper time having arrived, both would be born, O king, in the two body parts, then.)
Then, O greatly wise one, when the proper time arrived, both were born, O king, in the two parts of the body. (2-16-34)
एकाक्षिबाहुचरणे अर्धोदरमुखस्फिजे। दृष्ट्वा शरीरशकले प्रवेपाते उभे भृशम् ॥२-१६-३५॥
ekākṣibāhucaraṇe ardhodaramukhasphije। dṛṣṭvā śarīraśakale pravepāte ubhe bhṛśam ॥2-16-35॥
[एकाक्षि (ekākṣi) - one-eyed; बाहु (bāhu) - armed; चरणे (caraṇe) - legged; अर्धोदर (ardhodara) - with half a belly; मुख (mukha) - with a mouth; स्फिजे (sphije) - with buttocks; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शरीर (śarīra) - body; शकले (śakale) - in pieces; प्रवेपाते (pravepāte) - trembled; उभे (ubhe) - both; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(Having seen the one-eyed, armed, legged, half-bellied, mouthed, buttocked body in pieces, both greatly trembled.)
When they saw the body, which had one eye, arm, and leg, half a belly, a mouth, and buttocks, lying in pieces, both of them trembled greatly. (2-16-35)
उद्विग्ने सह संमन्त्र्य ते भगिन्यौ तदाबले। सजीवे प्राणिशकले तत्यजाते सुदुःखिते ॥२-१६-३६॥
udvigne saha sanmantrya te bhaginyau tadābale. sajīve prāṇiśakale tatyajāte suduḥkhite ॥2-16-36॥
[उद्विग्ने (udvigne) - agitated; सह (saha) - together; संमन्त्र्य (sanmantrya) - having consulted; ते (te) - those; भगिन्यौ (bhaginyau) - sisters; तदा (tadā) - then; अबले (abale) - O weak one; सजीवे (sajīve) - with life; प्राणिशकले (prāṇiśakale) - in the body with life; तत्यजाते (tatyajāte) - when (he) had departed; सुदुःखिते (suduḥkhite) - greatly distressed;]
(Agitated, together having consulted, those sisters then, O weak one, with life in the body, when (he) had departed, greatly distressed.)
Agitated and greatly distressed, those sisters, after consulting together, O weak one, when he had departed with life still in the body, were deeply grieved. (2-16-36)
तयोर्धात्र्यौ सुसंवीते कृत्वा ते गर्भसम्प्लवे। निर्गम्यान्तःपुरद्वारात्समुत्सृज्याशु जग्मतुः ॥२-१६-३७॥
tayor dhātryau susaṁvīte kṛtvā te garbhasamplave। nirgamyāntaḥpuradvārāt samutsṛjyāśu jagmatuḥ ॥2-16-37॥
[तयोः (tayor) - of those two; धात्र्यौ (dhātryau) - nursemaids; सुसंवीते (susaṁvīte) - well-wrapped; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; ते (te) - those; गर्भसम्प्लवे (garbhasamplave) - in the confusion of the wombs (births); निर्गम्य (nirgamya) - having gone out; अन्तःपुरद्वारात् (antaḥpuradvārāt) - from the inner apartment's door; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having abandoned; आशु (āśu) - quickly; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - they went;]
(Of those two, the nursemaids, having well-wrapped (the children), having done so in the confusion of the births, having gone out from the inner apartment's door, having quickly abandoned (them), went.)
The two nursemaids, after carefully wrapping the children during the confusion of the births, quickly left them at the door of the inner apartment and departed at once. (2-16-37)
ते चतुष्पथनिक्षिप्ते जरा नामाथ राक्षसी। जग्राह मनुजव्याघ्र मांसशोणितभोजना ॥२-१६-३८॥
te catuṣpathanikṣipte jarā nāmātha rākṣasī। jagrāha manujavyāghra māṃsaśoṇitabhojanā ॥2-16-38॥
[ते (te) - they; चतुष्पथनिक्षिप्ते (catuṣpathanikṣipte) - cast at the crossroads; जरा (jarā) - Jarā; नाम (nāma) - named; अथ (atha) - then; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - rākṣasī (female demon); जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; मनुजव्याघ्र (manujavyāghra) - tiger among men; मांसशोणितभोजना (māṃsaśoṇitabhojanā) - eater of flesh and blood;]
(They, cast at the crossroads, Jarā by name, then the rākṣasī seized, the tiger among men, eater of flesh and blood.)
Then, the rākṣasī named Jarā, who feeds on flesh and blood, seized the tiger among men who had been cast at the crossroads. (2-16-38)
कर्तुकामा सुखवहे शकले सा तु राक्षसी। सङ्घट्टयामास तदा विधानबलचोदिता ॥२-१६-३९॥
kartukāmā sukhavahe śakale sā tu rākṣasī। saṅghaṭṭayāmāsa tadā vidhānabalacoditā ॥2-16-39॥
[कर्तुकामा (kartukāmā) - desiring to do; सुखवहे (sukhavahe) - bringing happiness; शकले (śakale) - in pieces; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the demoness; सङ्घट्टयामास (saṅghaṭṭayāmāsa) - crushed; तदा (tadā) - then; विधानबलचोदिता (vidhānabalacoditā) - impelled by the power of fate;]
(Desiring to do, bringing happiness, in pieces, she but the demoness crushed then impelled by the power of fate.)
But the demoness, desiring to act, who brought happiness, crushed (it) into pieces at that time, impelled by the power of fate. (2-16-39)
ते समानीतमात्रे तु शकले पुरुषर्षभ। एकमूर्तिकृते वीरः कुमारः समपद्यत ॥२-१६-४०॥
te samānitamātre tu śakale puruṣarṣabha। ekamūrtikṛte vīraḥ kumāraḥ samapadyata ॥2-16-40॥
[ते (te) - they; समानीतमात्रे (samānitamātre) - when brought together in measure; तु (tu) - but; शकले (śakale) - in the pieces; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; एकमूर्तिकृते (ekamūrtikṛte) - for making into one form; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - the boy; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; ॥२-१६-४०॥ (॥2-16-40॥) -;]
(They, when brought together in measure but in the pieces, O bull among men, for making into one form, the hero, the boy became.)
O bull among men, when those pieces were brought together in the proper measure, the heroic boy assumed a single form. (2-16-40)
ततः सा राक्षसी राजन्विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचना। न शशाक समुद्वोढुं वज्रसारमयं शिशुम् ॥२-१६-४१॥
tataḥ sā rākṣasī rājan vismayotphullalocanā। na śaśāka samudvoḍhuṃ vajrasāramayaṃ śiśum ॥2-16-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the demoness; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विस्मय-उत्फुल्ल-लोचना (vismaya-utphulla-locanā) - with eyes widened in astonishment; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; समुद्वोढुम् (samudvoḍhum) - to lift up; वज्र-सार-मयम् (vajra-sāra-mayam) - made of adamantine essence; शिशुम् (śiśum) - the child;]
(Then she, the demoness, O king, with eyes widened in astonishment, was not able to lift up the child made of adamantine essence.)
Then, O king, the demoness, her eyes wide with astonishment, could not lift the child who was made of adamantine strength. (2-16-41)
बालस्ताम्रतलं मुष्टिं कृत्वा चास्ये निधाय सः। प्राक्रोशदतिसंरम्भात्सतोय इव तोयदः ॥२-१६-४२॥
bālas tāmratalaṃ muṣṭiṃ kṛtvā cāsye nidhāya saḥ। prākrośad atisaṃrambhāt satoya iva toyadaḥ ॥2-16-42॥

(The boy, having made a fist of the copper plate and having placed it in his mouth, he cried out from great agitation, like a cloud with water.)

तेन शब्देन सम्भ्रान्तः सहसान्तःपुरे जनः। निर्जगाम नरव्याघ्र राज्ञा सह परन्तप ॥२-१६-४३॥
tena śabdena sambhrāntaḥ sahasāntaḥpure janaḥ। nirjagāma naravyāghra rājñā saha parantapa ॥2-16-43॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; सम्भ्रान्तः (sambhrāntaḥ) - agitated; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; अन्तःपुरे (antaḥpure) - in the inner apartments; जनः (janaḥ) - people; निर्जगाम (nirjagāma) - came out; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; राज्ञा (rājñā) - with the king; सह (saha) - together; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
(By that sound, agitated, suddenly in the inner apartments, the people came out together with the king, O scorcher of foes.)

ते चाबले परिग्लाने पयःपूर्णपयोधरे। निराशे पुत्रलाभाय सहसैवाभ्यगच्छताम् ॥२-१६-४४॥
te cābale pariglāne payaḥpūrṇapayodhare। nirāśe putralābhāya sahasaivābhyagacchatām ॥2-16-44॥

(They and the weak, utterly exhausted, having breasts full of milk, hopeless for the gain of a son, suddenly indeed approached.)
Those women, weak and utterly exhausted, with breasts full of milk, having lost hope of obtaining a son, suddenly approached. (2-16-44)
अथ दृष्ट्वा तथाभूते राजानं चेष्टसन्ततिम्। तं च बालं सुबलिनं चिन्तयामास राक्षसी ॥२-१६-४५॥
atha dṛṣṭvā tathābhūte rājānaṃ ceṣṭasantatim। taṃ ca bālaṃ subalinaṃ cintayāmāsa rākṣasī ॥2-16-45॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; अभूते (abhūte) - in such a state; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; चेष्ट (ceṣṭa) - activity; सन्ततिम् (santatim) - continuity; तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; बालम् (bālam) - boy; सुबलिनम् (subalinam) - very strong; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the demoness;]
(Then, having seen the king in such a state, the continuity of activity, and that very strong boy, the demoness thought.)
Then, seeing the king in such a condition and the ongoing activity, and observing that strong boy, the demoness began to ponder. (2-16-45)
नार्हामि विषये राज्ञो वसन्ती पुत्रगृद्धिनः। बालं पुत्रमुपादातुं मेघलेखेव भास्करम् ॥२-१६-४६॥
nārhāmi viṣaye rājño vasantī putragṛddhinaḥ। bālaṃ putram upādātuṃ meghalekheva bhāskaram ॥2-16-46॥
[न (na) - not; अर्हामि (arhāmi) - am worthy; विषये (viṣaye) - in the domain; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; वसन्ती (vasantī) - dwelling; पुत्रगृद्धिनः (putragṛddhinaḥ) - desiring the son; बालं (bālam) - child; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; उपादातुम् (upādātum) - to take away; मेघलेखा (meghalekhā) - cloud-streak; इव (iva) - like; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the sun;]
(I am not worthy, dwelling in the domain of the king, desiring the son, to take away the child, like a cloud-streak (takes away) the sun.)
I am not worthy, living in the king's domain and desiring his son, to take away the child, just as a streak of cloud cannot take away the sun. (2-16-46)
सा कृत्वा मानुषं रूपमुवाच मनुजाधिपम्। बृहद्रथ सुतस्तेऽयं मद्दत्तः प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥२-१६-४७॥
sā kṛtvā mānuṣaṃ rūpam uvāca manujādhipam। bṛhadratha sutas te'yaṃ maddattaḥ pratigṛhyatām ॥2-16-47॥
[सा (sā) - she; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मनुजाधिपम् (manujādhipam) - to the lord of men; बृहद्रथ (bṛhadratha) - Bṛhadratha; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; अयम् (ayam) - this; मद्दत्तः (maddattaḥ) - given by me; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigṛhyatām) - may be accepted;]
(She, having assumed a human form, said to the lord of men: "Bṛhadratha, this son of yours, given by me, may be accepted.")
She assumed a human form and said to the king: "Bṛhadratha, accept this son of yours, who has been given by me." (2-16-47)
तव पत्नीद्वये जातो द्विजातिवरशासनात्। धात्रीजनपरित्यक्तो मयायं परिरक्षितः ॥२-१६-४८॥
tava patnīdvaye jāto dvijātivaraśāsanāt। dhātrījanaparityakto mayāyaṃ parirakṣitaḥ ॥2-16-48॥
[तव (tava) - your; पत्नीद्वये (patnīdvaye) - in the two wives; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; द्विजातिवरशासनात् (dvijātivaraśāsanāt) - by the command of the best of twice-born; धात्रीजनपरित्यक्तः (dhātrījanaparityaktaḥ) - abandoned by the nurse; मया (mayā) - by me; अयम् (ayam) - this; परिरक्षितः (parirakṣitaḥ) - protected;]
(This (child), born in your two wives by the command of the best of twice-born, abandoned by the nurse, has been protected by me.)
By the command of the foremost of the twice-born, this child was born to your two wives. Abandoned by the nurse, I have protected him. (2-16-48)
ततस्ते भरतश्रेष्ठ काशिराजसुते शुभे। तं बालमभिपत्याशु प्रस्नवैरभिषिञ्चताम् ॥२-१६-४९॥
tataste bharataśreṣṭha kāśirājasute śubhe। taṃ bālam abhipatyāśu prasnavair abhiṣiñcatām ॥2-16-49॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; काशिराजसुते (kāśirājasute) - O daughter of the king of Kāśi; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; तं (taṃ) - him; बालम् (bālam) - the boy; अभिपत्य (abhipatya) - having approached; आशु (āśu) - quickly; प्रस्नवैः (prasnavaiḥ) - with sacred waters; अभिषिञ्चताम् (abhiṣiñcatām) - let them anoint;]
(Then they, O best of the Bharatas, O daughter of the king of Kāśi, O auspicious one, having quickly approached the boy, let them anoint him with sacred waters.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, O daughter of the king of Kāśi, O auspicious one, they quickly approached the boy and anointed him with sacred waters. (2-16-49)
ततः स राजा संहृष्टः सर्वं तदुपलभ्य च। अपृच्छन्नवहेमाभां राक्षसीं तामराक्षसीम् ॥२-१६-५०॥
tataḥ sa rājā saṃhṛṣṭaḥ sarvaṃ tadupalabhya ca। apṛcchannavahemābhāṃ rākṣasīṃ tāmarākṣasīm ॥2-16-50॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; संहृष्टः (saṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; तदुपलभ्य (tad-upalabhya) - having perceived that; च (ca) - and; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; नव (nava) - new; हेमाभां (hemābhām) - golden-hued; राक्षसीं (rākṣasīm) - rākṣasī (demoness); ताम् (tām) - her; राक्षसीम् (rākṣasīm) - rākṣasī (demoness);]
(Then he, the king, delighted, having perceived all that, and asked the new golden-hued rākṣasī, her, the rākṣasī.)

का त्वं कमलगर्भाभे मम पुत्रप्रदायिनी। कामया ब्रूहि कल्याणि देवता प्रतिभासि मे ॥२-१६-५१॥

(Who are you, O one resembling the womb of a lotus, giver of son to me? With desire, speak, O auspicious one, goddess, you appear to me.)
Who are you, O lotus-wombed one, giver of a son to me? Out of desire, speak, O auspicious goddess, you appear before me. (2-16-51)
