Pancharatra: After departure of Brihadratha, as predicted by ChandaKaushika conquers various kings.
राक्षस्युवाच॥
rākṣasy uvāca॥
[राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - female demon; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The female demon said.)
The demoness spoke.
जरा नामास्मि भद्रं ते राक्षसी कामरूपिणी। तव वेश्मनि राजेन्द्र पूजिता न्यवसं सुखम् ॥२-१७-१॥
jarā nāmāsmi bhadraṃ te rākṣasī kāmarūpiṇī। tava veśmani rājendra pūjitā nyavasaṃ sukham ॥2-17-1॥
[जरा (jarā) - old age; नाम (nāma) - by name; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - demoness; कामरूपिणी (kāmarūpiṇī) - assuming any form at will; तव (tava) - in your; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - house; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पूजिता (pūjitā) - honored; न्यवसं (nyavasaṃ) - I dwelt; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;]
(Old age by name I am, good fortune to you, demoness assuming any form at will. In your house, O king, honored, I dwelt happily.)
My name is Jarā, O king, a demoness who can assume any form at will. I was honored in your house and lived happily. (2-17-1)
साहं प्रत्युपकारार्थं चिन्तयन्त्यनिशं नृप। तवेमे पुत्रशकले दृष्टवत्यस्मि धार्मिक ॥२-१७-२॥
sāhaṃ pratyupakārārthaṃ cintayantyaniśaṃ nṛpa। taveme putraśakale dṛṣṭavatyasmi dhārmika ॥2-17-2॥
[सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रत्युपकारार्थम् (pratyupakārārtham) - for the purpose of reciprocating a favor; चिन्तयन्ति (cintayanti) - thinking; अनिशम् (aniśam) - constantly; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; तव (tava) - your; इमे (ime) - these; पुत्रशकले (putraśakale) - pieces of (your) son; दृष्टवति (dṛṣṭavati) - having seen; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; धार्मिक (dhārmika) - righteous;]
(She, I, for the purpose of reciprocating a favor, thinking constantly, O king, your these pieces of (your) son, having seen, I am, righteous.)
O king, I am she who, constantly thinking of how to reciprocate your favor, has seen these pieces of your son and remains righteous. (2-17-2)
संश्लेषिते मया दैवात्कुमारः समपद्यत। तव भाग्यैर्महाराज हेतुमात्रमहं त्विह ॥२-१७-३॥
saṃśleṣite mayā daivāt kumāraḥ samapadyata। tava bhāgyair mahārāja hetumātram ahaṃ tv iha ॥2-17-3॥
[संश्लेषिते (saṃśleṣite) - having been united; मया (mayā) - by me; दैवात् (daivāt) - by fate; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - the prince; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - was obtained; तव (tava) - by your; भाग्यैः (bhāgyaiḥ) - fortunes; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; हेतुमात्रम् (hetumātram) - merely the cause; अहम् (aham) - I; त्विह (tv iha) - indeed here;]
(Having been united by me by fate, the prince was obtained. By your fortunes, O great king, I am merely the cause here.)
O great king, by your fortune, the prince has come to you through my union by fate; I am only the instrument here. (2-17-3)
कृष्ण उवाच॥
kṛṣṇa uvāca॥

Kṛṣṇa said.
एवमुक्त्वा तु सा राजंस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। स गृह्य च कुमारं तं प्राविशत्स्वगृहं नृपः ॥२-१७-४॥
evam-uktvā tu sā rājaṃs-tatraiva-antaradhīyata। sa gṛhya ca kumāraṃ taṃ prāviśat-svagṛhaṃ nṛpaḥ ॥2-17-4॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; सः (saḥ) - he; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; च (ca) - and; कुमारम् (kumāram) - the boy; तम् (tam) - him; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; स्वगृहम् (svagṛham) - his own house; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(Thus having spoken, but she, O king, there indeed disappeared. He, having taken the boy, him, entered his own house, the king.)
Having thus spoken, she disappeared there itself, O king. The king, taking the boy, entered his own house. (2-17-4)
तस्य बालस्य यत्कृत्यं तच्चकार नृपस्तदा। आज्ञापयच्च राक्षस्या मागधेषु महोत्सवम् ॥२-१७-५॥
tasya bālasya yatkṛtyaṃ taccakāra nṛpastadā। ājñāpayacca rākṣasyā māgadheṣu mahotsavam ॥2-17-5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that; his; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; of the child; यत् (yat) - which; what; that which; कृत्यं (kṛtyam) - to be done; duty; act; तत् (tat) - that; चकार (cakāra) - did; performed; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; आज्ञापयत् (ājñāpayat) - ordered; commanded; च (ca) - and; राक्षस्या (rākṣasyā) - of the demoness; मागधेषु (māgadheṣu) - in Magadha; among the Magadhas; महोत्सवम् (mahotsavam) - great festival; grand celebration;]
(Of him, of the boy, what was to be done, that the king did then. And he ordered a great festival of the demoness among the Magadhas.)
At that time, the king did whatever was to be done for the boy. He also ordered a grand festival for the demoness among the Magadhas. (2-17-5)
तस्य नामाकरोत्तत्र प्रजापतिसमः पिता। जरया सन्धितो यस्माज्जरासन्धस्ततोऽभवत् ॥२-१७-६॥
tasya nāmākarottatra prajāpatisamaḥ pitā। jarayā sandhito yasmājjarāsandhastato'bhavat ॥2-17-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; नाम (nāma) - name; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रजापतिसमः (prajāpatisamaḥ) - equal to Prajāpati; पिता (pitā) - father; जरया (jarayā) - by old age; सन्धितः (sandhitaḥ) - joined; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Of him, the name was made there by the father equal to Prajāpati. Because he was joined by old age, therefore he became Jarāsandha. (2-17-6))
His father, who was equal to Prajāpati, gave him the name there. Because he was joined by old age, he became known as Jarāsandha. (2-17-6)
सोऽवर्धत महातेजा मगधाधिपतेः सुतः। प्रमाणबलसम्पन्नो हुताहुतिरिवानलः ॥२-१७-७॥
so'vardhata mahātejā magadhādhipateḥ sutaḥ। pramāṇabalasampanno hutāhutirivānalaḥ ॥2-17-7॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; मगधाधिपतेः (magadhādhipateḥ) - of the lord of Magadha; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; प्रमाणबलसम्पन्नः (pramāṇabalasampannaḥ) - endowed with proper strength; हुताहुतिः (hutāhutiḥ) - offering to the fire; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire;]
(He grew, of great brilliance, son of the lord of Magadha, endowed with proper strength, like fire fed by offerings to the fire.)
He, the son of the lord of Magadha, grew up endowed with great brilliance and proper strength, like fire fed by offerings. (2-17-7)
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य पुनरेव महातपाः। मगधानुपचक्राम भगवांश्चण्डकौशिकः ॥२-१७-८॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya punar eva mahātapāḥ। magadhān upacakrāma bhagavāṃś caṇḍakaushikaḥ ॥2-17-8॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; त् (t) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; मगधान् (magadhān) - to the Magadhas; उपचक्राम (upacakrāma) - approached; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; चण्डकौशिकः (caṇḍakaushikaḥ) - Caṇḍakaushika;]
(Of someone, indeed, then, of time, again, indeed, the great ascetic, to the Magadhas, approached, the venerable one, Caṇḍakaushika.)
Then, at a certain time, the great ascetic, the venerable Caṇḍakaushika, again approached the Magadhas. (2-17-8)
तस्यागमनसंहृष्टः सामात्यः सपुरःसरः। सभार्यः सह पुत्रेण निर्जगाम बृहद्रथः ॥२-१७-९॥
tasyāgamana-saṁhṛṣṭaḥ sāmātyaḥ sapuraḥsaraḥ. sabhāryaḥ saha putreṇa nirjagāma bṛhadrathaḥ ॥2-17-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; आगमन (āgamana) - arrival; संहृष्टः (saṁhṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; सामात्यः (sāmātyaḥ) - with ministers; स (sa) - with; पुरःसरः (puraḥsaraḥ) - leading; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with wife; सह (saha) - together with; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with son; निर्जगाम (nirjagāma) - went out; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha;]
(Delighted at his arrival, with ministers, leading, with wife, together with son, Bṛhadratha went out.)
Bṛhadratha, delighted at his arrival, accompanied by his ministers, leading the way, with his wife and son, went out. (2-17-9)
पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयैस्तमर्चयामास भारत। स नृपो राज्यसहितं पुत्रं चास्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥२-१७-१०॥
pādyārghyācamanīyaistamarcayāmāsa bhārata। sa nṛpo rājyasahitaṃ putraṃ cāsmai nyavedayat ॥2-17-10॥
[पाद्य (pādya) - water for washing feet; अर्घ्य (arghya) - offering of respect; आचमनीयैः (ācamanīyaiḥ) - with water for sipping; तम् (tam) - him; अर्चयामास (arcayāmāsa) - worshipped; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; स (sa) - he; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; राज्यसहितम् (rājyasahitam) - together with the kingdom; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - offered;]
(With water for washing feet, offering of respect, and water for sipping, he worshipped him, O Bhārata. That king offered to him the son together with the kingdom.)
O Bhārata, he worshipped him with water for washing feet, offerings of respect, and water for sipping. The king then offered to him his son along with the kingdom. (2-17-10)
प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजां पार्थिवाद्भगवानृषिः। उवाच मागधं राजन्प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥२-१७-११॥
pratigṛhya tu tāṃ pūjāṃ pārthivādbhagavān ṛṣiḥ। uvāca māgadhaṃ rājan prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ॥2-17-11॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - that; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; पार्थिवात् (pārthivāt) - from the kings; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मागधं (māgadhaṃ) - to the bard (Magadha); राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रहृष्टेन (prahṛṣṭena) - with delighted; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - inner self;]
(Having accepted that worship from the kings, the venerable sage said to the bard (Magadha), O king, with delighted inner self.)
The venerable sage, having accepted that worship from the kings, joyfully addressed the bard Magadha, O king, with a delighted heart. (2-17-11)
सर्वमेतन्मया राजन्विज्ञातं ज्ञानचक्षुषा। पुत्रस्तु शृणु राजेन्द्र यादृशोऽयं भविष्यति ॥२-१७-१२॥
sarvam etan mayā rājan vijñātaṃ jñānacakṣuṣā। putras tu śṛṇu rājendra yādṛśo'yaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥2-17-12॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विज्ञातम् (vijñātam) - known; ज्ञानचक्षुषा (jñānacakṣuṣā) - by the eye of knowledge; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तु (tu) - but; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - of what kind; अयम् (ayam) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(All this, O king, has been known by me through the eye of knowledge. But hear, O king, what kind this son will be.)
O king, I have known all this through the eye of knowledge. But now, O king, listen to what kind of person this son will become. (2-17-12)
अस्य वीर्यवतो वीर्यं नानुयास्यन्ति पार्थिवाः। देवैरपि विसृष्टानि शस्त्राण्यस्य महीपते ॥ न रुजं जनयिष्यन्ति गिरेरिव नदीरयाः ॥२-१७-१३॥
asya vīryavato vīryaṃ nānuyāsyanti pārthivāḥ। devair api visṛṣṭāni śastrāṇy asya mahīpate ॥ na rujaṃ janayiṣyanti girer iva nadīr ayāḥ ॥2-17-13॥
[अस्य (asya) - of him; वीर्यवतः (vīryavataḥ) - of the powerful one; वीर्यं (vīryam) - strength; न (na) - not; अनुयास्यन्ति (anuyāsyanti) - will follow; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; विसृष्टानि (visṛṣṭāni) - released; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; अस्य (asya) - of him; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; न (na) - not; रुजं (rujaṃ) - harm; जनयिष्यन्ति (janayiṣyanti) - will cause; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; इव (iva) - like; नदीरयाः (nadīr ayāḥ) - the waters of rivers;]
(The strength of this powerful one the kings will not follow. Even weapons released by the gods, O king, of him, will not cause harm, like the waters of rivers (do not harm) the mountain.)
O king, the kings will not be able to match the strength of this powerful one. Even weapons released by the gods will not harm him, just as the waters of rivers do not harm the mountain. (2-17-13)
सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तानामेष मूर्ध्नि ज्वलिष्यति। सर्वेषां निष्प्रभकरो ज्योतिषामिव भास्करः ॥२-१७-१४॥
sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānāmeṣa mūrdhni jvaliṣyati। sarveṣāṃ niṣprabhakaro jyotiṣāmiva bhāskaraḥ ॥2-17-14॥
[सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तानाम् (sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānām) - of all those who are anointed on the head; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; ज्वलिष्यति (jvaliṣyati) - will shine; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; निष्प्रभकरः (niṣprabhakaraḥ) - remover of brilliance; ज्योतिषाम् (jyotiṣām) - of the luminaries; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun;]
(Of all those who are anointed on the head, this one will shine on the head; of all, like the sun among the luminaries, the remover of brilliance.)
Among all those who are anointed on the head, he will shine supreme; just as the sun, among all luminaries, removes their brilliance. (2-17-14)
एनमासाद्य राजानः समृद्धबलवाहनाः। विनाशमुपयास्यन्ति शलभा इव पावकम् ॥२-१७-१५॥
enam āsādya rājānaḥ samṛddha-balavāhanāḥ। vināśam upayāsyanti śalabhā iva pāvakam ॥2-17-15॥
[एनम् (enam) - this (one); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; समृद्ध (samṛddha) - prosperous; बल (bala) - with strength; वाहनाः (vāhanāḥ) - with armies; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; उपयास्यन्ति (upayāsyanti) - will approach; शलभाः (śalabhāḥ) - moths; इव (iva) - like; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire;]
(Having approached this (one), kings with prosperous strength and armies will approach destruction like moths (approach) fire.)
Having come near him, kings endowed with prosperous strength and armies will rush to their destruction like moths to a flame. (2-17-15)
एष श्रियं समुदितां सर्वराज्ञां ग्रहीष्यति। वर्षास्विवोद्धतजला नदीर्नदनदीपतिः ॥२-१७-१६॥
eṣa śriyaṃ samuditāṃ sarvarājñāṃ grahīṣyati. varṣāsvivoddhatajalā nadīrnadīpatiḥ ॥2-17-16॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; समुदिताम् (samuditām) - risen; सर्वराज्ञाम् (sarvarājñām) - of all kings; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - will seize; वर्षासु (varṣāsu) - in the rains; इव (iva) - like; उद्धतजला (uddhatajalā) - with swollen waters; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; नदीपतिः (nadīpatiḥ) - the lord of rivers (the ocean);]
(This will seize the prosperity arisen of all kings, like the lord of rivers (the ocean) seizes the rivers with swollen waters in the rains.)
He will seize the prosperity arisen among all kings, just as the lord of rivers, the ocean, receives the rivers swollen with water during the rains. (2-17-16)
एष धारयिता सम्यक्चातुर्वर्ण्यं महाबलः। शुभाशुभमिव स्फीता सर्वसस्यधरा धरा ॥२-१७-१७॥
eṣa dhārayitā samyak-cāturvarṇyaṃ mahābalaḥ। śubhāśubham-iva sphītā sarvasasyadharā dharā ॥2-17-17॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; धारयिता (dhārayitā) - bearer; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; चातुर्वर्ण्यम् (cāturvarṇyam) - the fourfold order; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; शुभाशुभम् (śubhāśubham) - good and evil; इव (iva) - like; स्फीता (sphītā) - prosperous; सर्वसस्यधरा (sarvasasyadharā) - bearing all crops; धरा (dharā) - the earth;]
(This bearer, properly (upholding) the fourfold order, of great strength, like good and evil, prosperous, bearing all crops, the earth.)
This earth, of great strength, upholding the fourfold order properly, prosperous and bearing all crops, supports both good and evil alike. (2-17-17)
अस्याज्ञावशगाः सर्वे भविष्यन्ति नराधिपाः। सर्वभूतात्मभूतस्य वायोरिव शरीरिणः ॥२-१७-१८॥
asyājñāvaśagāḥ sarve bhaviṣyanti narādhipāḥ। sarvabhūtātmabhūtasya vāyoriva śarīriṇaḥ ॥2-17-18॥
[अस्य (asya) - of him; आज्ञा (ājñā) - command; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - under control; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; सर्वभूतात्मभूतस्य (sarvabhūtātmabhūtasya) - of him who is the self of all beings; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; इव (iva) - like; शरीरिणः (śarīriṇaḥ) - of the embodied; ॥२-१७-१८॥ (॥2-17-18॥) - ;]
(All kings will become subject to his command, like the embodied are to the wind, of him who is the self of all beings.)
All kings will come under his command, just as all embodied beings are subject to the wind, of him who is the self of all beings. (2-17-18)
एष रुद्रं महादेवं त्रिपुरान्तकरं हरम्। सर्वलोकेष्वतिबलः स्वयं द्रक्ष्यति मागधः ॥२-१७-१९॥
eṣa rudraṃ mahādevaṃ tripurāntakaraṃ haram। sarvalokeṣvatibalaḥ svayaṃ drakṣyati māgadhaḥ ॥2-17-19॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; रुद्रं (rudraṃ) - Rudra; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - the great god; त्रिपुरान्तकरं (tripurāntakaraṃ) - destroyer of Tripura; हरम् (haram) - Hara; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; अतिबलः (atibalaḥ) - exceedingly strong; स्वयं (svayaṃ) - himself; द्रक्ष्यति (drakṣyati) - will see; मागधः (māgadhaḥ) - the Magadhan;]
(This Rudra, the great god, the destroyer of Tripura, Hara, exceedingly strong in all worlds, the Magadhan himself will see.)
The Magadhan himself will see this Rudra, the great god, the destroyer of Tripura, Hara, who is exceedingly strong in all worlds. (2-17-19)
एवं ब्रुवन्नेव मुनिः स्वकार्यार्थं विचिन्तयन्। विसर्जयामास नृपं बृहद्रथमथारिहन् ॥२-१७-२०॥
evaṃ bruvanneva muniḥ svakāryārthaṃ vicintayan। visarjayāmāsa nṛpaṃ bṛhadrathamathārihan ॥2-17-20॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; एव (eva) - indeed; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; स्व (sva) - own; कार्य (kārya) - purpose; अर्थं (arthaṃ) - object; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - reflecting; विसर्जयामास (visarjayāmāsa) - dismissed; नृपं (nṛpaṃ) - king; बृहद्रथम् (bṛhadratham) - Bṛhadratha; अथ (atha) - then; अरिहन् (arihan) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Thus, indeed speaking, the sage, reflecting on his own purpose, dismissed the king Bṛhadratha, the destroyer of enemies, then.)
Thus, while speaking in this manner, the sage, contemplating his own purpose, then dismissed King Bṛhadratha, the destroyer of enemies. (2-17-20)
प्रविश्य नगरं चैव ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिभिर्वृतः। अभिषिच्य जरासन्धं मगधाधिपतिस्तदा ॥ बृहद्रथो नरपतिः परां निर्वृतिमाययौ ॥२-१७-२१॥
praviśya nagaraṃ caiva jñātisambandhibhirvṛtaḥ। abhiṣicya jarāsandhaṃ magadhādhipatistadā ॥ bṛhadratho narapatiḥ parāṃ nirvṛtimāyayau ॥2-17-21॥
[प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिभिः (jñātisambandhibhiḥ) - by relatives and associates; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having anointed; जरासन्धं (jarāsandhaṃ) - Jarāsandha; मगधाधिपतिः (magadhādhipatiḥ) - the lord of Magadha; तदा (tadā) - then; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha; नरपतिः (narapatiḥ) - the king; परां (parāṃ) - supreme; निर्वृतिम् (nirvṛtim) - liberation; आययौ (āyayau) - attained;]

अभिषिक्ते जरासन्धे तदा राजा बृहद्रथः। पत्नीद्वयेनानुगतस्तपोवनरतोऽभवत् ॥२-१७-२२॥
abhiṣikte jarāsandhe tadā rājā bṛhadrathaḥ। patnīdvayenānugatastapovanarato'bhavat ॥2-17-22॥
[अभिषिक्ते (abhiṣikte) - having been consecrated; जरासन्धे (jarāsandhe) - Jarāsandha; तदा (tadā) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha; पत्नीद्वयेन (patnīdvayena) - with two wives; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - having followed; तपोवनरतः (tapovanarataḥ) - engaged in forest austerities; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(When Jarāsandha had been consecrated, then King Bṛhadratha, having followed with his two wives, became engaged in forest austerities.)
When Jarāsandha was consecrated, King Bṛhadratha, accompanied by his two wives, retired to the forest to practice austerities. (2-17-22)
तपोवनस्थे पितरि मातृभ्यां सह भारत। जरासन्धः स्ववीर्येण पार्थिवानकरोद्वशे ॥२-१७-२३॥
tapovanasthe pitari mātṛbhyāṃ saha bhārata। jarāsandhaḥ svavīryeṇa pārthivānakarodvaśe ॥2-17-23॥
[तपोवनस्थे (tapovanasthe) - in the ascetic forest-dwelling; पितरि (pitari) - when the father; मातृभ्यां (mātṛbhyām) - with the two mothers; सह (saha) - together; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; स्ववीर्येण (svavīryeṇa) - by his own strength; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - the kings; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; वशे (vaśe) - subject;]
(When the father was dwelling in the ascetic forest, together with the two mothers, O Bhārata, Jarāsandha, by his own strength, made the kings subject (to him).)
O Bhārata, when the father was residing in the ascetic forest with the two mothers, Jarāsandha, by his own power, subjugated the kings. (2-17-23)
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य तपोवनगतो नृपः। सभार्यः स्वर्गमगमत्तपस्तप्त्वा बृहद्रथः ॥२-१७-२४॥
atha dīrghasya kālasya tapovanagato nṛpaḥ। sabhāryaḥ svargamagamattapastaptvā bṛhadrathaḥ ॥2-17-24॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दीर्घस्य (dīrghasya) - of long; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; तपोवनगतः (tapovanagataḥ) - having gone to the forest of austerities; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with his wife; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha (name of the king);]
(Then, after a long time, the king, having gone to the forest of austerities, with his wife, attained heaven, having performed austerity, Bṛhadratha.)
Then, after a long time, King Bṛhadratha, together with his wife, went to the forest of austerities and, having performed penance, attained heaven. (2-17-24)
तस्यास्तां हंसडिभकावशस्त्रनिधनावुभौ। मन्त्रे मतिमतां श्रेष्ठौ युद्धशास्त्रविशारदौ ॥२-१७-२५॥
tasyāstāṃ haṃsaḍibhakāvaśastranidhanāvubhau। mantre matimatāṃ śreṣṭhau yuddhaśāstraviśāradau ॥2-17-25॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; आस्तां (āstāṃ) - were; हंसडिभक (haṃsaḍibhaka) - Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka; अवशस्त्रनिधनौ (avaśastranidhanau) - subject to weapons for death; उभौ (ubhau) - both; मन्त्रे (mantre) - in counsel; मतिमतां (matimatām) - of the intelligent; श्रेष्ठौ (śreṣṭhau) - the best; युद्धशास्त्र (yuddhaśāstra) - science of war; विशारदौ (viśāradau) - skilled;]
(Of her, there were both Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka, subject to weapons for death, the best among the intelligent in counsel, skilled in the science of war.)
She had two ministers, Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka, both destined to die by weapons, who were the wisest in counsel and most skilled in the science of war. (2-17-25)
यौ तौ मया ते कथितौ पूर्वमेव महाबलौ। त्रयस्त्रयाणां लोकानां पर्याप्ता इति मे मतिः ॥२-१७-२६॥
yau tau mayā te kathitau pūrvameva mahābalau। trayastrayāṇāṃ lokānāṃ paryāptā iti me matiḥ ॥2-17-26॥
[यौ (yau) - who (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - to you; कथितौ (kathitau) - have been spoken (about); पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; महाबलौ (mahābalau) - of great strength (dual); त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; पर्याप्तौ (paryāptau) - sufficient (dual); इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Those two, who have been spoken of to you by me before, indeed of great strength, are sufficient for the three worlds—thus is my opinion.)
Those two, whom I have already described to you as possessing great strength, are, in my opinion, sufficient to face the three worlds. (2-17-26)
एवमेष तदा वीर बलिभिः कुकुरान्धकैः। वृष्णिभिश्च महाराज नीतिहेतोरुपेक्षितः ॥२-१७-२७॥
evameṣa tadā vīra balibhiḥ kukurāndhakaiḥ। vṛṣṇibhiśca mahārāja nītihetorupekṣitaḥ ॥2-17-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; तदा (tadā) - then; वीर (vīra) - hero; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - by the strong; कुकुरान्धकैः (kukurāndhakaiḥ) - by the Kukuras and Andhakas; वृष्णिभिः (vṛṣṇibhiḥ) - by the Vṛṣṇis; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नीतिहेतोः (nītihetoḥ) - for the sake of policy; उपेक्षितः (upekṣitaḥ) - was neglected;]
(Thus, this hero then was neglected by the strong Kukuras, Andhakas, and Vṛṣṇis, O great king, for the sake of policy.)
Thus, O great king, this hero was at that time neglected by the powerful Kukuras, Andhakas, and Vṛṣṇis for reasons of state policy. (2-17-27)
