क्षमा स्विच्छ्रेयसी तात उताहो तेज इत्युत। एतन्मे संशयं तात यथावद्ब्रूहि पृच्छते ॥३-२९-३॥
kṣamā svicchreyasī tāta utāho teja ityuta। etanme saṃśayaṃ tāta yathāvadbrūhi pṛcchate ॥3-29-3॥

(Forbearance indeed is better, O father, or else energy, thus or; this my doubt, O father, properly tell (to the one who) asks.)
O father, is forbearance indeed better, or is energy? This is my doubt, O father; please properly explain it to me who asks. (3-29-3)
श्रेयो यदत्र धर्मज्ञ ब्रूहि मे तदसंशयम्। करिष्यामि हि तत्सर्वं यथावदनुशासनम् ॥३-२९-४॥
śreyo yad atra dharmajña brūhi me tad asaṁśayam। kariṣyāmi hi tat sarvaṁ yathāvat anuśāsanam ॥3-29-4॥
[श्रेयो (śreyaḥ) - better; यत् (yat) - which; अत्र (atra) - here; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; तत् (tat) - that; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; अनुशासनम् (anuśāsanam) - instruction;]
(Better which here, O knower of dharma, tell to me that without doubt; I shall do indeed that all properly instruction.)
O knower of dharma, tell me without doubt what is better here; I shall indeed do all that as properly instructed. (3-29-4)
तस्मै प्रोवाच तत्सर्वमेवं पृष्टः पितामहः। सर्वनिश्चयवित्प्राज्ञः संशयं परिपृच्छते ॥३-२९-५॥
tasmai provāca tatsarvam evaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ pitāmahaḥ। sarvaniścayavitprājñaḥ saṃśayaṃ paripṛcchate ॥3-29-5॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एवम् (evam) - thus; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; सर्वनिश्चयवित् (sarvaniścayavit) - knower of all certainty; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; परिपृच्छते (paripṛcchate) - to one who asks thoroughly;]
(To him spoke that all thus, having been asked, the grandsire, knower of all certainty, wise, to the one who asks the doubt.)
The grandsire, wise and knower of all certainty, having been asked thus, spoke all that to him who was asking the doubt. (3-29-5)

न श्रेयः सततं तेजो न नित्यं श्रेयसी क्षमा। इति तात विजानीहि द्वयमेतदसंशयम् ॥३-२९-६॥
na śreyaḥ satataṃ tejo na nityaṃ śreyasī kṣamā। iti tāta vijānīhi dvayam etad asaṃśayam ॥3-29-6॥
[न (na) - not; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - superiority; सततं (satataṃ) - always; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; न (na) - not; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; श्रेयसी (śreyasī) - more excellent; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; इति (iti) - thus; तात (tāta) - O dear one; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; द्वयम् (dvayam) - the two; एतत् (etad) - this; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Not superiority always energy, not always more excellent forbearance; thus O dear one, know the two this without doubt.)
Neither energy is always superior, nor is forbearance always more excellent; thus, O dear one, know both of these to be so without doubt. (3-29-6)
यो नित्यं क्षमते तात बहून्दोषान्स विन्दति। भृत्याः परिभवन्त्येनमुदासीनास्तथैव च ॥३-२९-७॥
yo nityaṃ kṣamate tāta bahūndoṣāns vindati। bhṛtyāḥ paribhavantyenamudāsīnāstathaiva ca ॥3-29-7॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; क्षमते (kṣamate) - forgives; तात (tāta) - O father; बहून् (bahūn) - many; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; सः (saḥ) - he; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; भृत्याः (bhṛtyāḥ) - servants; परिभवन्ति (paribhavanti) - disregard; एनम् (enam) - him; उदासीनाः (udāsīnāḥ) - indifferent ones; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Who always forgives, O father, many faults, he finds; servants disregard him, indifferent ones in the same way and.)
O father, he who always forgives many faults finds that his servants disregard him, and so do the indifferent ones. (3-29-7)
सर्वभूतानि चाप्यस्य न नमन्ते कदाचन। तस्मान्नित्यं क्षमा तात पण्डितैरपवादिता ॥३-२९-८॥
sarvabhūtāni cāpy asya na namante kadācana। tasmān nityaṃ kṣamā tāta paṇḍitair apavāditā ॥3-29-8॥
[सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; नमन्ते (namante) - bow; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; तात (tāta) - dear one; पण्डितैः (paṇḍitaiḥ) - by the wise; अपवादिता (apavāditā) - declared;]
(All beings and also of him not bow ever; therefore always forgiveness dear one by the wise declared;)
All beings never bow to him at any time; therefore, dear one, forgiveness is always declared by the wise. (3-29-8)
अवज्ञाय हि तं भृत्या भजन्ते बहुदोषताम्। आदातुं चास्य वित्तानि प्रार्थयन्तेऽल्पचेतसः ॥३-२९-९॥
avajñāya hi taṁ bhṛtyā bhajante bahudoṣatām। ādātuṁ cāsya vittāni prārthayante'lpacetasaḥ ॥3-29-9॥
[अवज्ञाय (avajñāya) - having disregarded; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (taṁ) - him; भृत्या (bhṛtyā) - servants; भजन्ते (bhajante) - associate with; बहुदोषताम् (bahudoṣatām) - much-faulted state; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; वित्तानि (vittāni) - wealths; प्रार्थयन्ते (prārthayante) - desire; अल्पचेतसः (alpacetasaḥ) - those of little intelligence;]
(Having disregarded indeed him, servants associate with a much-faulted state; to take and his wealths, those of little intelligence desire.)
Indeed, having disregarded him, the servants associate with a state full of faults; and those of little intelligence desire to take his wealth. (3-29-9)
यानं वस्त्राण्यलङ्काराञ्शयनान्यासनानि च। भोजनान्यथ पानानि सर्वोपकरणानि च ॥३-२९-१०॥
yānaṃ vastrāṇy alaṅkārāñ śayanāny āsanāni ca। bhojanāny atha pānāni sarvopakaraṇāni ca ॥3-29-10॥
[यानम् (yānam) - vehicle; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; अलङ्कारान् (alaṅkārān) - ornaments; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; च (ca) - and; भोजनानि (bhojanāni) - foods; अथ (atha) - and also; पानानि (pānāni) - drinks; सर्वोपकरणानि (sarvopakaraṇāni) - all implements; च (ca) - and;]
(vehicle; garments; ornaments; beds; seats and; foods and also; drinks; all implements and; (3-29-10))
Vehicles, garments, ornaments, beds, seats, as well as foods, drinks, and all implements. (3-29-10)
आददीरन्नधिकृता यथाकाममचेतसः। प्रदिष्टानि च देयानि न दद्युर्भर्तृशासनात् ॥३-२९-११॥
ādadīrannadhikṛtā yathākāmamacetasaḥ। pradiṣṭāni ca deyāni na dadyurbhartṛśāsanāt ॥3-29-11॥
[आददीरन् (ādadīran) - they would take; (from ā-√dā, to take) अधिकृता (adhikṛtāḥ) - appointed ones; (those who have authority) यथा (yathā) - as; according to; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; will; अचेतसः (acetasaḥ) - thoughtless; without sense; प्रदिष्टानि (pradiṣṭāni) - assigned; prescribed; च (ca) - and; देयानि (deyāni) - to be given; न (na) - not; दद्युः (dadyuḥ) - they would give; भर्तृशासनात् (bhartṛśāsanāt) - from the master's command;]
(The appointed ones, being thoughtless, would take as they desire; and the things assigned to be given, they would not give from the master's command.)
The appointed officials, acting thoughtlessly, would take whatever they wished; and the things that were supposed to be given, they would not give as per the master's orders. (3-29-11)
न चैनं भर्तृपूजाभिः पूजयन्ति कदाचन। अवज्ञानं हि लोकेऽस्मिन्मरणादपि गर्हितम् ॥३-२९-१२॥
na ca enaṃ bhartṛpūjābhiḥ pūjayanti kadācana। avajñānaṃ hi loke'smin maraṇād api garhitam ॥3-29-12॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; भर्तृपूजाभिः (bhartṛpūjābhiḥ) - by husband-honourings; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - they honour; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; अवज्ञानम् (avajñānam) - disrespect; हि (hi) - indeed; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; मरणात् (maraṇāt) - than death; अपि (api) - even; गर्हितम् (garhitam) - more censured;]
(Not and him by husband-honourings they honour at any time. Disrespect indeed in the world in this than death even more censured.)
Nor do they ever honour him with acts of respect for the husband. For in this world, disrespect is considered even more blameworthy than death. (3-29-12)
क्षमिणं तादृशं तात ब्रुवन्ति कटुकान्यपि। प्रेष्याः पुत्राश्च भृत्याश्च तथोदासीनवृत्तयः ॥३-२९-१३॥
kṣamiṇaṃ tādṛśaṃ tāta bruvanti kaṭukāny api। preṣyāḥ putrāś ca bhṛtyāś ca tathodāsīnavṛttayaḥ ॥3-29-13॥
[क्षमिणं (kṣamiṇam) - forbearing one; forgiving one; तादृशं (tādṛśam) - such; of that kind; तात (tāta) - O father; dear one; ब्रुवन्ति (bruvanti) - they speak; they say; कटुकानि (kaṭukāni) - harsh things; bitter words; अपि (api) - even; also; प्रेष्याः (preṣyāḥ) - servants; attendants; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; children; च (ca) - and; भृत्याः (bhṛtyāḥ) - servants; dependents; च (ca) - and; तथो (tatho) - also; likewise; उदासीनवृत्तयः (udāsīnavṛttayaḥ) - those of indifferent conduct; those with neutral behavior;]
(Even to such a forbearing one, O father, they speak harsh things; servants, sons, and dependents, and likewise those of indifferent conduct.)
O father, even a person as forbearing as this is spoken to with harsh words by servants, sons, dependents, and those who behave indifferently. (3-29-13)
अप्यस्य दारानिच्छन्ति परिभूय क्षमावतः। दाराश्चास्य प्रवर्तन्ते यथाकाममचेतसः ॥३-२९-१४॥
apy asya dārān icchanti paribhūya kṣamāvataḥ। dārāś ca asya pravartante yathākāmam acetasaḥ ॥3-29-14॥
[अपि (api) - even; अस्य (asya) - of him; दारान् (dārān) - wives; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; परिभूय (paribhūya) - disregarding; क्षमावतः (kṣamāvataḥ) - of the patient one; दाराः (dārāḥ) - wives; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - behave; यथा (yathā) - as; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; अचेतसः (acetasaḥ) - of the senseless;]
(Even the wives of him do not desire, disregarding the patient one; and the wives of him behave as they wish, of the senseless.)
Even his wives do not desire him, disregarding the patient one; and his wives behave as they please, like those without sense. (3-29-14)
तथा च नित्यमुदिता यदि स्वल्पमपीश्वरात्। दण्डमर्हन्ति दुष्यन्ति दुष्टाश्चाप्यपकुर्वते ॥३-२९-१५॥
tathā ca nityamuditā yadi svalpam apīśvarāt। daṇḍam arhanti duṣyanti duṣṭāś cāpy apakurvate ॥3-29-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; नित्यमुदिता (nityamuditā) - always joyful; यदि (yadi) - if; स्वल्पम् (svalpam) - a little; अपि (api) - even; ईश्वरात् (īśvarāt) - from the lord; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - punishment; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - deserve; दुष्यन्ति (duṣyanti) - are corrupted; दुष्टाः (duṣṭāḥ) - the wicked; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपकुर्वते (apakurvate) - do wrong;]
(Thus and always joyful if even a little from the lord punishment deserve are corrupted the wicked and also do wrong.)
Thus, even if always joyful, if the wicked deserve even a little punishment from the lord, they become corrupted and also do wrong. (3-29-15)
एते चान्ये च बहवो नित्यं दोषाः क्षमावताम्। अथ वैरोचने दोषानिमान्विद्ध्यक्षमावताम् ॥३-२९-१६॥
ete cānye ca bahavo nityaṃ doṣāḥ kṣamāvatām। atha vairocane doṣānimānvidhyakṣamāvatām ॥3-29-16॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; क्षमावताम् (kṣamāvatām) - of the patient ones; अथ (atha) - now; वैरोचने (vairocane) - O son of Virocana; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; इमान् (imān) - these; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; अक्षमावताम् (akṣamāvatām) - of the impatient ones;]
(These and others and many always faults of the patient ones; now, O son of Virocana, faults these know of the impatient ones. (3-29-16))
These and many other faults are always found in the patient; now, O son of Virocana, know these faults of the impatient. (3-29-16)
अस्थाने यदि वा स्थाने सततं रजसावृतः। क्रुद्धो दण्डान्प्रणयति विविधान्स्वेन तेजसा ॥३-२९-१७॥
asthāne yadi vā sthāne satataṃ rajasāvṛtaḥ। kruddho daṇḍān praṇayati vividhān svena tejasā ॥3-29-17॥
[अस्थाने (asthāne) - in a wrong place; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; स्थाने (sthāne) - in a proper place; सततं (satataṃ) - always; रजसा (rajasā) - by passion; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - covered; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; दण्डान् (daṇḍān) - punishments; प्रणयति (praṇayati) - inflicts; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; तेजसा (tejasā) - energy;]
(In a wrong place if or in a proper place always by passion covered angry punishments inflicts various by his own energy.)
One who is always covered by passion, whether in the wrong place or the right, inflicts various punishments in anger by his own power. (3-29-17)
मित्रैः सह विरोधं च प्राप्नुते तेजसावृतः। प्राप्नोति द्वेष्यतां चैव लोकात्स्वजनतस्तथा ॥३-२९-१८॥
mitraiḥ saha virodhaṃ ca prāpnute tejasāvṛtaḥ। prāpnoti dveṣyatāṃ caiva lokātsvajanatastathā ॥3-29-18॥
[मित्रैः (mitraiḥ) - with friends; सह (saha) - together with; विरोधं (virodhaṃ) - opposition; च (ca) - and; प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - attains; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - enveloped; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; द्वेष्यतां (dveṣyatāṃ) - state of being hated; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकात् (lokāt) - from people; स्वजनतः (svajanataḥ) - from one's own people; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Enveloped by brilliance, he attains opposition together with friends and attains the state of being hated indeed from people and likewise from one's own people.)
When one is enveloped by brilliance, he comes into opposition even with friends and becomes hated both by people in general and by his own kin. (3-29-18)
सोऽवमानादर्थहानिमुपालम्भमनादरम्। सन्तापद्वेषलोभांश्च शत्रूंश्च लभते नरः ॥३-२९-१९॥
so'vamānād arthahānim upālambham anādarām। santāpa-dveṣa-lobhāṁś ca śatrūṁś ca labhate naraḥ ॥3-29-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवमानात् (avamānāt) - from disrespect; अर्थहानिम् (arthahānim) - loss of wealth; उपालम्भम् (upālambham) - reproach; अनादरम् (anādarām) - disregard; सन्ताप (santāpa) - affliction; द्वेष (dveṣa) - hatred; लोभान् (lobhān) - greeds; च (ca) - and; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; च (ca) - and; लभते (labhate) - obtains; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(He from disrespect obtains loss of wealth, reproach, disregard, affliction, hatred, greeds, and enemies.)
A man, due to disrespect, incurs loss of wealth, reproach, disregard, affliction, hatred, greed, and also gains enemies. (3-29-19)
क्रोधाद्दण्डान्मनुष्येषु विविधान्पुरुषो नयन्। भ्रश्यते शीघ्रमैश्वर्यात्प्राणेभ्यः स्वजनादपि ॥३-२९-२०॥
krodhāddaṇḍān manuṣyeṣu vividhān puruṣo nayan। bhraśyate śīghram aiśvaryāt prāṇebhyaḥ svajanād api ॥3-29-20॥
[क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; दण्डान् (daṇḍān) - punishments; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; नयन् (nayan) - inflicting; भ्रश्यते (bhraśyate) - falls; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; ऐश्वर्यात् (aiśvaryāt) - from sovereignty; प्राणेभ्यः (prāṇebhyaḥ) - than lives; स्वजनात् (svajanāt) - than kinsmen; अपि (api) - even;]
(From anger, punishments among men various a man inflicting, falls quickly from sovereignty, than lives, than kinsmen even.)
A man, inflicting various punishments among men out of anger, quickly falls from sovereignty, even more than from his own life or kinsmen. (3-29-20)
योऽपकर्तॄंश्च कर्तॄंश्च तेजसैवोपगच्छति। तस्मादुद्विजते लोकः सर्पाद्वेश्मगतादिव ॥३-२९-२१॥
yo'pakartṝṁś ca kartṝṁś ca tejasai vāpagacchati। tasmād udvijate lokaḥ sarpād veśmagatād iva ॥3-29-21॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अपकर्तॄन् (apakartṝn) - wrongdoers; च (ca) - and; कर्तॄन् (kartṝn) - doers (of good); च (ca) - and; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; एव (eva) - indeed; उपगच्छति (upagacchati) - approaches; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; उद्विजते (udvijate) - shrinks away; लोकः (lokaḥ) - people; सर्पात् (sarpāt) - from a serpent; वेश्मगतात् (veśmagatāt) - from one entered into the house; इव (iva) - like;]
(Who approaches both wrongdoers and doers (of good) indeed by brilliance; therefore people shrink away like from a serpent that has entered the house.)
He who, by his very brilliance, approaches both wrongdoers and doers of good—people shrink away from him just as they would from a serpent that has entered the house. (3-29-21)
यस्मादुद्विजते लोकः कथं तस्य भवो भवेत्। अन्तरं ह्यस्य दृष्ट्वैव लोको विकुरुते ध्रुवम् ॥ तस्मान्नात्युत्सृजेत्तेजो न च नित्यं मृदुर्भवेत् ॥३-२९-२२॥
yasmādudvijate lokaḥ kathaṁ tasya bhavo bhavet। antaraṁ hyasya dṛṣṭvaiva loko vikurute dhruvam ॥ tasmānnātyutsṛjettejo na ca nityaṁ mṛdurbhavet ॥3-29-22॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from whom; उद्विजते (udvijate) - is agitated; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the people; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; तस्य (tasya) - his; भवः (bhavaḥ) - being; भवेत् (bhavet) - can be; अन्तरं (antaraṁ) - difference; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the people; विकुरुते (vikurute) - is disturbed; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; अत्युत्सृजेत् (atyutsṛjet) - should excessively abandon; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; मृदुर्भवेत् (mṛdurbhavet) - should be soft;]
(From whom the people are agitated, how can his being be? Indeed, just by seeing the difference of him, the people are certainly disturbed. Therefore, one should not excessively abandon energy, nor should one always be soft.)
If people are agitated by someone, how can his existence be proper? Indeed, merely perceiving his difference, people are certainly disturbed. Therefore, one should not abandon energy excessively, nor should one always be gentle. (3-29-22)
काले मृदुर्यो भवति काले भवति दारुणः। स वै सुखमवाप्नोति लोकेऽमुष्मिन्निहैव च ॥३-२९-२३॥
kāle mṛdur yo bhavati kāle bhavati dāruṇaḥ। sa vai sukham avāpnoti loke'muṣminnihaiva ca ॥3-29-23॥
[काले (kāle) - in time; मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - gentle; यः (yaḥ) - who; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; काले (kāle) - in time; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दारुणः (dāruṇaḥ) - harsh; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; लोके (loke) - in the world; अमु्ष्मिन् (amuṣmin) - in that (other); इह (iha) - here; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(In time, gentle who becomes, in time becomes harsh; he indeed happiness attains in the world, in that (other), here only and.)
He who is gentle at the right time and harsh at the right time, he indeed attains happiness in this world and the next. (3-29-23)
क्षमाकालांस्तु वक्ष्यामि शृणु मे विस्तरेण तान्। ये ते नित्यमसन्त्याज्या यथा प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥३-२९-२४॥
kṣamākālāṃstu vakṣyāmi śṛṇu me vistareṇa tān। ye te nityamasantyājyā yathā prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ॥3-29-24॥
[क्षमाकालान् (kṣamākālān) - times of forbearance; तु (tu) - but; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; मे (me) - to me; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; तान् (tān) - those; ये (ye) - which; ते (te) - they; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; असन्त्याज्या (asantyājyā) - not to be abandoned; यथा (yathā) - as; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - have said; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(But I shall declare the times of forbearance; listen to me in detail those which they always not to be abandoned as have said the wise.)
But I will explain to you, in detail, the times of forbearance; listen to me. These are those which, as the wise have said, are never to be abandoned. (3-29-24)
पूर्वोपकारी यस्तु स्यादपराधेऽगरीयसि। उपकारेण तत्तस्य क्षन्तव्यमपराधिनः ॥३-२९-२५॥
pūrvopakārī yastu syādaparādhe'garīyasi। upakāreṇa tattasya kṣantavyamaparādhinaḥ ॥3-29-25॥
[पूर्व (pūrva) - former; earlier; उपकारी (upakārī) - benefactor; one who does a favor; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; might be; अपराधे (aparādhe) - in an offence; in a fault; अगरीयसि (agarīyasi) - greater; more serious; उपकारेण (upakāreṇa) - by a favor; by a good deed; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; क्षन्तव्यम् (kṣantavyam) - should be forgiven; ought to be pardoned; अपराधिनः (aparādhinaḥ) - of the offender; of the one at fault;]
(Former benefactor who but may be in an offence greater; by a favor that of him should be forgiven of the offender.)
If someone who has previously done a favor commits a greater offence, that offence of the benefactor should be forgiven because of the earlier favor. (3-29-25)
अबुद्धिमाश्रितानां च क्षन्तव्यमपराधिनाम्। न हि सर्वत्र पाण्डित्यं सुलभं पुरुषेण वै ॥३-२९-२६॥
abuddhimāśritānāṃ ca kṣantavyamaparādhinām। na hi sarvatra pāṇḍityaṃ sulabhaṃ puruṣeṇa vai ॥3-29-26॥
[अबुद्धिम् (abuddhim) - lack of understanding; आश्रितानाम् (āśritānām) - of those who have resorted to; च (ca) - and; क्षन्तव्यम् (kṣantavyam) - to be forgiven; अपराधिनाम् (aparādhinām) - of the offenders; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पाण्डित्यं (pāṇḍityam) - wisdom; सुलभं (sulabham) - easily obtained; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a person; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of those who have resorted to lack of understanding and of the offenders, forgiveness is to be given; for indeed, wisdom is not easily obtained everywhere by a person.)
Forgiveness should be given to those who act out of ignorance and to offenders, for indeed, wisdom is not easily found in everyone. (3-29-26)
अथ चेद्बुद्धिजं कृत्वा ब्रूयुस्ते तदबुद्धिजम्। पापान्स्वल्पेऽपि तान्हन्यादपराधे तथानृजून् ॥३-२९-२७॥
atha ced-buddhijaṃ kṛtvā brūyus te tad-abuddhijam। pāpān svalpe'pi tān hanyād aparādhe tathā-nṛjūn ॥3-29-27॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; चेत् (cet) - if; बुद्धिजम् (buddhijam) - born of understanding; produced by intellect; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having considered; ब्रूयुः (brūyuḥ) - they might say; ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; अबुद्धिजम् (abuddhijam) - not born of understanding; not produced by intellect; पापान् (pāpān) - sins; evil ones; स्वल्पे (svalpe) - in a small; in a little; अपि (api) - even; तान् (tān) - those; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; should destroy; अपराधे (aparādhe) - in the offense; in the transgression; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in that way; अनृजून् (anṛjūn) - those not straight; the unrighteous;]
(Now if, having considered as born of understanding, they might say to you that it is not born of understanding; the sins, even in a small (matter), those should be destroyed in the offense, likewise the unrighteous.)
Now, if they, having regarded something as arising from understanding, say to you that it is not so, then even for a small offense, those sinful and unrighteous ones should be punished for their transgression. (3-29-27)
सर्वस्यैकोऽपराधस्ते क्षन्तव्यः प्राणिनो भवेत्। द्वितीये सति वध्यस्तु स्वल्पेऽप्यपकृते भवेत् ॥३-२९-२८॥
sarvasyaiko'parādhaste kṣantavyaḥ prāṇino bhavet। dvitīye sati vadhyastu svalpe'pyapakṛte bhavet ॥3-29-28॥
[सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; of everyone; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; single; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - offense; transgression; ते (te) - by you; क्षन्तव्यः (kṣantavyaḥ) - to be forgiven; should be forgiven; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - living being; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; may be; द्वितीये (dvitīye) - in the second; at the second; सति (sati) - being; occurring; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; deserving death; तु (tu) - but; स्वल्पे (svalpe) - in a small; in a little; अपि (api) - even; अपकृते (apakṛte) - wrongdoing; injury; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; may be;]
(Of all, a single offense by you should be forgiven for a living being; but when a second occurs, even for a small wrongdoing, he should be killed.)
A single offense by anyone should be forgiven, but if a second occurs, even if it is a minor wrongdoing, the person deserves to be punished with death. (3-29-28)
अजानता भवेत्कश्चिदपराधः कृतो यदि। क्षन्तव्यमेव तस्याहुः सुपरीक्ष्य परीक्षया ॥३-२९-२९॥
ajānātā bhavet kaścid aparādhaḥ kṛto yadi। kṣantavyam eva tasya āhuḥ suparīkṣya parīkṣayā ॥3-29-29॥
[अजानता (ajānātā) - by one not knowing; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - offense; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - committed; यदि (yadi) - if; क्षन्तव्यम् (kṣantavyam) - to be forgiven; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; सुपरीक्ष्य (suparīkṣya) - having well examined; परीक्षया (parīkṣayā) - by examination;]
(If some offense may be committed by one not knowing, it is indeed to be forgiven of him, they say, having well examined by examination.)
If someone unknowingly commits an offense, it is said that it should indeed be forgiven after thoroughly examining the matter. (3-29-29)
मृदुना मार्दवं हन्ति मृदुना हन्ति दारुणम्। नासाध्यं मृदुना किञ्चित्तस्मात्तीक्ष्णतरो मृदुः ॥३-२९-३०॥
mṛdunā mārdavaṃ hanti mṛdunā hanti dāruṇam। nāsādhyaṃ mṛdunā kiñcit tasmāt tīkṣṇataro mṛduḥ ॥3-29-30॥
[मृदुना (mṛdunā) - by the gentle; मार्दवं (mārdavam) - gentleness; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; मृदुना (mṛdunā) - by the gentle; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - the harsh; न (na) - not; असाध्यं (asādhyaṃ) - incapable of being accomplished; मृदुना (mṛdunā) - by the gentle; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तीक्ष्णतरः (tīkṣṇataraḥ) - sharper; मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - the gentle;]
(By the gentle, gentleness is destroyed; by the gentle, the harsh is destroyed; there is nothing incapable of being accomplished by the gentle; therefore, the gentle is sharper.)
Gentleness overcomes gentleness; gentleness overcomes harshness; nothing is impossible for the gentle; therefore, gentleness is more powerful than sharpness. (3-29-30)
देशकालौ तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य बलाबलमथात्मनः। नादेशकाले किञ्चित्स्याद्देशः कालः प्रतीक्ष्यते ॥३-२९-३१॥
deśakālau tu samprekṣya balābalam athātmanaḥ। nādeśakāle kiñcit syād deśaḥ kālaḥ pratīkṣyate ॥3-29-31॥
[देश (deśa) - place; कालौ (kālau) - and time; तु (tu) - but; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having considered; बल (bala) - strength; अबलम् (abalam) - weakness; अथ (atha) - and then; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; न (na) - not; अदेशकाले (adeśakāle) - at improper place and time; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; स्यात् (syāt) - should be done; देशः (deśaḥ) - place; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; प्रतीक्ष्यते (pratīkṣyate) - is to be awaited;]
(Place and time but having considered strength and weakness and then of oneself, not at improper place and time anything should be done; place, time is to be awaited.)
But having considered place and time, as well as one's own strength and weakness, nothing should be done at an improper place or time; one should wait for the proper place and time. (3-29-31)
तथा लोकभयाच्चैव क्षन्तव्यमपराधिनः ॥३-२९-३१॥
tathā lokabhayāccaiva kṣantavyamaparādhinaḥ ॥3-29-31॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that manner; लोक (loka) - people; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्षन्तव्यम् (kṣantavyam) - should be forgiven; अपराधिनः (aparādhinaḥ) - the offenders;]
(In that manner, from fear of people and indeed, the offenders should be forgiven.)
Likewise, out of fear of public opinion, the offenders should indeed be forgiven. (3-29-31)
एत एवंविधाः कालाः क्षमायाः परिकीर्तिताः। अतोऽन्यथानुवर्तत्सु तेजसः काल उच्यते ॥३-२९-३२॥
eta evaṃvidhāḥ kālāḥ kṣamāyāḥ parikīrtitāḥ। ato'nyathānuvartatsu tejasah kāla ucyate ॥3-29-32॥
[एत (eta) - these; एवंविधाः (evaṃvidhāḥ) - of such kind; कालाः (kālāḥ) - times; क्षमायाः (kṣamāyāḥ) - of forbearance; परिकीर्तिताः (parikīrtitāḥ) - are described; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; अनुवर्तत्सु (anuvartatsu) - when following; तेजसः (tejasah) - of energy; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(These such kinds of times of forbearance are described. Therefore, when otherwise following, the time of energy is called.)
These are the kinds of times described for forbearance. Therefore, when things proceed otherwise, it is called the time of energy. (3-29-32)

तदहं तेजसः कालं तव मन्ये नराधिप। धार्तराष्ट्रेषु लुब्धेषु सततं चापकारिषु ॥३-२९-३३॥
tadahaṃ tejasah kālaṃ tava manye narādhipa। dhārtarāṣṭreṣu lubdheṣu satataṃ cāpakāriṣu ॥3-29-33॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; तेजसः (tejasah) - of energy; कालम् (kālam) - time; तव (tava) - your; मन्‍ये (manye) - I consider; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu) - among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; लुब्धेषु (lubdheṣu) - among the greedy; सततम् (satatam) - always; च (ca) - and; अपकारिषु (apakāriṣu) - among the wrongdoers;]
(That I, of energy, time, your, consider, O king; among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, among the greedy, always and among the wrongdoers.)
O king, I consider that time, which is your energy, is always present among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, among the greedy, and among the wrongdoers. (3-29-33)
न हि कश्चित्क्षमाकालो विद्यतेऽद्य कुरून्प्रति। तेजसश्चागते काले तेज उत्स्रष्टुमर्हसि ॥३-२९-३४॥
na hi kaścit kṣamākālo vidyate'dya kurūn prati। tejaś ca āgate kāle teja utsraṣṭum arhasi ॥3-29-34॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; क्षमा (kṣamā) - delay; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; अद्य (adya) - today; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; प्रति (prati) - towards; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; च (ca) - and; आगते (āgate) - having arrived; काले (kāle) - in time; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; उत्स्रष्टुम् (utsraṣṭum) - to release; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Not indeed anyone delay time exists today towards the Kurus. And when the time has arrived, energy to release you ought. (3-29-34))
Indeed, there is no time for delay today regarding the Kurus. When the time has come, you ought to release your energy. (3-29-34)
मृदुर्भवत्यवज्ञातस्तीक्ष्णादुद्विजते जनः। काले प्राप्ते द्वयं ह्येतद्यो वेद स महीपतिः ॥३-२९-३५॥
mṛdur bhavaty avajñātas tīkṣṇād udvijate janaḥ। kāle prāpte dvayaṃ hy etad yo veda sa mahīpatiḥ॥3-29-35॥
[मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - gentle; soft; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; अवज्ञातः (avajñātaḥ) - disregarded; despised; तीक्ष्णात् (tīkṣṇāt) - from the harsh; from the sharp; उद्विजते (udvijate) - shrinks; recoils; जनः (janaḥ) - person; people; काले (kāle) - in time; at the right time; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; when attained; द्वयम् (dvayam) - both; the two; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एतत् (etat) - this; these; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेद (veda) - knows; स (sa) - he; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; lord of the earth;]
(Gentle becomes disregarded; from the harsh, people shrink; in time having arrived, both indeed these who knows, he king.)
A gentle person is disregarded, while people shrink from the harsh; but when the right time comes, he who knows both of these is a true king. (3-29-35)
