ततो वनगताः पार्थाः सायाह्ने सह कृष्णया। उपविष्टाः कथाश्चक्रुर्दुःखशोकपरायणाः ॥३-२८-१॥
tato vanagatāḥ pārthāḥ sāyāhne saha kṛṣṇayā। upaviṣṭāḥ kathāścakrurduḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ ॥3-28-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; वनगताः (vanagatāḥ) - gone to the forest; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; सायाह्ने (sāyāhne) - in the evening; सह (saha) - together with; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); उपविष्टाः (upaviṣṭāḥ) - having sat down; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; they did; दुःखशोकपरायणाः (duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ) - given over to sorrow and grief;]
(Then, having gone to the forest, the sons of Pṛthā, in the evening, together with Kṛṣṇā, having sat down, made stories, given over to sorrow and grief.)
Then, in the evening, the sons of Pṛthā who had gone to the forest, together with Kṛṣṇā, sat down and conversed, absorbed in sorrow and grief. (3-28-1)
प्रिया च दर्शनीया च पण्डिता च पतिव्रता। ततः कृष्णा धर्मराजमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३-२८-२॥
priyā ca darśanīyā ca paṇḍitā ca pativratā। tataḥ kṛṣṇā dharmarājam idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥3-28-2॥
[प्रिया (priyā) - dear (feminine); च (ca) - and; दर्शनीया (darśanīyā) - worthy of being seen; च (ca) - and; पण्डिता (paṇḍitā) - learned (feminine); च (ca) - and; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira, accusative); इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Dear and worthy of being seen and learned and devoted to husband; then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) to Dharmarāja this speech said.)
Dear, beautiful, learned, and devoted to her husband, then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) spoke these words to Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira). (3-28-2)
न नूनं तस्य पापस्य दुःखमस्मासु किञ्चन। विद्यते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य नृशंसस्य दुरात्मनः ॥३-२८-३॥
na nūnaṃ tasya pāpasya duḥkham asmāsu kiñcana। vidyate dhārtarāṣṭrasya nṛśaṃsasya durātmanaḥ ॥3-28-3॥
[न (na) - not; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of the wicked; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - among us; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - at all; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's son; नृशंसस्य (nṛśaṃsasya) - of the cruel; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded;]
(Not indeed of him, of the wicked, suffering among us at all exists; of Dhritarashtra's son, of the cruel, of the evil-minded.)
Surely, none of the suffering of that wicked one falls upon us; it belongs to the cruel, evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra. (3-28-3)
यस्त्वां राजन्मया सार्धमजिनैः प्रतिवासितम्। भ्रातृभिश्च तथा सर्वैर्नाभ्यभाषत किञ्चन ॥ वनं प्रस्थाप्य दुष्टात्मा नान्वतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥३-२८-४॥
yastvāṃ rājanmayā sārdhamajinaiḥ prativāsitam। bhrātṛbhiśca tathā sarvairnābhyabhāṣata kiñcana ॥ vanaṃ prasthāpya duṣṭātmā nānvatapyata durmatiḥ ॥3-28-4॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मया (mayā) - by me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अजिनैः (ajinaiḥ) - with deer-skins; प्रतिवासितम् (prativāsitam) - made to dwell; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; न (na) - not; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke to; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; वनम् (vanam) - forest; प्रस्थाप्य (prasthāpya) - having sent forth; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-souled; न (na) - not; अन्वतप्यत (anvatapyata) - felt remorse; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - evil-minded;]
(Who you, O king, by me together with deer-skins made to dwell, with brothers and also with all, did not speak anything. Having sent (you) to the forest, the wicked-souled, evil-minded (one) did not feel remorse.)
O king, he who made you dwell with me and your brothers, clad in deer-skins, and did not speak a word to any of you, after sending you to the forest, that wicked-souled, evil-minded man did not feel any remorse. (3-28-4)
आयसं हृदयं नूनं तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः। यस्त्वां धर्मपरं श्रेष्ठं रूक्षाण्यश्रावयत्तदा ॥३-२८-५॥
āyasaṃ hṛdayaṃ nūnaṃ tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ। yastvāṃ dharmaparaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ rūkṣāṇyaśrāvayattadā ॥3-28-5॥
[आयसं (āyasaṃ) - iron; (hard; unfeeling;) हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - certainly; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुष्कृतकर्मणः (duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ) - of evil-deed-doer; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; धर्मपरम् (dharmaparam) - devoted to dharma; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - excellent; रूक्षाणि (rūkṣāṇi) - harsh (words); अश्रावयत् (aśrāvayat) - caused to be heard; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Iron (hard) heart certainly of him of evil-deed-doer; who you devoted to dharma excellent harsh (words) caused to be heard then.)
Certainly, the one who, having an iron heart, committed evil deeds, caused you, who are excellent and devoted to dharma, to hear harsh words at that time. (3-28-5)
सुखोचितमदुःखार्हं दुरात्मा ससुहृद्गणः। ईदृशं दुःखमानीय मोदते पापपूरुषः ॥३-२८-६॥
sukhocitamaduḥkhārhaṃ durātmā sasuḥṛdgaṇaḥ। īdṛśaṃ duḥkhamānīya modate pāpapūruṣaḥ ॥3-28-6॥
[सुखोचितम् (sukhocitam) - fit for happiness; अदुःखार्हम् (aduḥkhārham) - not deserving of sorrow; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul; ससुहृद्गणः (sasuḥṛdgaṇaḥ) - with his group of friends; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; आनीय (ānīya) - having brought; मोदते (modate) - rejoices; पापपूरुषः (pāpapūruṣaḥ) - sinful man;]
(The wicked soul, with his group of friends, brings such sorrow to one fit for happiness and not deserving of sorrow, and the sinful man rejoices.)
A wicked person, together with his friends, brings such sorrow to someone who deserves happiness and not suffering, and the sinful man rejoices in this. (3-28-6)
चतुर्णामेव पापानामश्रु वै नापतत्तदा। त्वयि भारत निष्क्रान्ते वनायाजिनवाससि ॥३-२८-७॥
caturṇāmeva pāpānām aśru vai nāpatat tadā। tvayi bhārata niṣkrānte vanāy ājinavāsasi ॥3-28-7॥

(Of the four sinful ones, indeed, a tear did not fall then; upon you, O Bhārata, having departed to the forest, wearing a garment of skin (3-28-7))
Not even a tear fell from the four sinful ones at that time, O Bhārata, when you departed to the forest clad in a garment of skin (3-28-7)
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः। दुर्भ्रातुस्तस्य चोग्रस्य तथा दुःशासनस्य च ॥३-२८-८॥
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneś ca dur-ātmanaḥ। dur-bhrātuḥ tasya ca ugrasya tathā duḥśāsanasya ca ॥3-28-8॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Śakuni; च (ca) - and; दुरात्मनः (dur-ātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded; दुर्भ्रातुः (dur-bhrātuḥ) - of the wicked brother; तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; उग्रस्य (ugrasya) - of the fierce one; तथा (tathā) - also; दुःशासनस्य (duḥśāsanasya) - of Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and;]
(of Duryodhana; of Karṇa; of Śakuni; and of the evil-minded; of the wicked brother; of him; and of the fierce one; also of Duḥśāsana; and;)
Of Duryodhana, Karṇa, Śakuni the evil-minded, the wicked brother of his, the fierce one, and also of Duḥśāsana. (3-28-8)
इतेरेषां तु सर्वेषां कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम। दुःखेनाभिपरीतानां नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज्जलम् ॥३-२८-९॥
itareṣāṃ tu sarveṣāṃ kurūṇāṃ kurusattama। duḥkhenābhiparītānāṃ netrebhyaḥ prāpatajjalam ॥3-28-9॥
[इतेरेषाम् (itareṣām) - of the others; तु (tu) - but; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by sorrow; अभिपरीतानाम् (abhiparītānām) - overwhelmed; नेत्रेभ्यः (netrebhyaḥ) - from the eyes; प्रापतत् (prāpatat) - fell; जलम् (jalam) - water;]
(But from the eyes of all the other Kurus, O best of the Kurus, water fell, overwhelmed by sorrow.)
But, O best of the Kurus, tears fell from the eyes of all the other Kurus, overwhelmed by sorrow. (3-28-9)
इदं च शयनं दृष्ट्वा यच्चासीत्ते पुरातनम्। शोचामि त्वां महाराज दुःखानर्हं सुखोचितम् ॥३-२८-१०॥
idaṃ ca śayanaṃ dṛṣṭvā yac cāsīt te purātanam। śocāmi tvāṃ mahārāja duḥkhānarhaṃ sukhocitam ॥3-28-10॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; शयनं (śayanam) - bed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; ते (te) - your; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; त्वां (tvāṃ) - for you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दुःखानर्हम् (duḥkhānarham) - not deserving of sorrow; सुखोचितम् (sukhocitam) - fit for happiness;]
(This and the bed having seen, and which was your ancient (bed), I grieve for you, O great king, not deserving of sorrow, fit for happiness.)
Seeing this bed and your former ancient bed, I grieve for you, O great king, who are not deserving of sorrow and are accustomed to happiness. (3-28-10)
दान्तं यच्च सभामध्ये आसनं रत्नभूषितम्। दृष्ट्वा कुशबृसीं चेमां शोको मां रुन्धयत्ययम् ॥३-२८-११॥
dāntaṃ yac ca sabhāmadhye āsanaṃ ratnabhūṣitam। dṛṣṭvā kuśabṛsīṃ cemāṃ śoko māṃ rundhayatyayam ॥3-28-11॥
[दान्तम् (dāntam) - tamed; subdued; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; रत्नभूषितम् (ratnabhūṣitam) - adorned with jewels; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कुशबृसीम् (kuśabṛsīm) - the grass seat; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; माम् (mām) - me; रुन्धयति (rundhayati) - overwhelms; obstructs; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(The tamed and which in the midst of the assembly seat adorned with jewels, having seen the grass seat and this, grief me overwhelms this.)
Having seen the tamed seat adorned with jewels in the midst of the assembly, and this grass seat, this grief overwhelms me. (3-28-11)
यदपश्यं सभायां त्वां राजभिः परिवारितम्। तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३-२८-१२॥
yad apaśyaṁ sabhāyāṁ tvāṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam। tac ca rājan apaśyantyāḥ kā śāntir hṛdayasya me ॥3-28-12॥

(Which I saw in the assembly you by kings surrounded; that also, O king, for not seeing, what peace of the heart (is) mine?)
O king, having seen you surrounded by kings in the assembly, and now not seeing that, what peace can there be in my heart? (3-28-12)
या त्वाहं चन्दनादिग्धमपश्यं सूर्यवर्चसम्। सा त्वा पङ्कमलादिग्धं दृष्ट्वा मुह्यामि भारत ॥३-२८-१३॥
yā tvāhaṃ candanādigdham apaśyaṃ sūryavarcasam। sā tvā paṅkamalādigdhaṃ dṛṣṭvā muhyāmi bhārata ॥3-28-13॥
[या (yā) - who (feminine); त्वा (tvā) - you (accusative singular); अहम् (aham) - I; चन्दन (candana) - sandalwood; आदिग्धम् (ādigdham) - anointed with; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - saw; सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; वर्चसम् (varcasam) - splendor; सा (sā) - she; त्वा (tvā) - you (accusative singular); पङ्क (paṅka) - mud; मल (mala) - dirt; आदिग्धम् (ādigdham) - smeared with; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I am bewildered; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Who you I anointed with sandalwood saw with sun splendor; she you anointed with mud and dirt having seen I am bewildered O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, I, who saw you anointed with sandalwood and shining like the sun, now seeing you smeared with mud and dirt, am bewildered.
या वै त्वा कौशिकैर्वस्त्रैः शुभ्रैर्बहुधनैः पुरा। दृष्टवत्यस्मि राजेन्द्र सा त्वां पश्यामि चीरिणम् ॥३-२८-१४॥
yā vai tvā kauśikairvastraiḥ śubhrairbahudhanaiḥ purā। dṛṣṭavatyasmi rājendra sā tvāṃ paśyāmi cīriṇam ॥3-28-14॥
[या (yā) - who (feminine); वै (vai) - indeed; त्वा (tvā) - you; कौशिकैः (kauśikaiḥ) - of silk; वस्त्रैः (vastraiḥ) - with garments; शुभ्रैः (śubhrair) - white; बहुधनैः (bahudhanaiḥ) - with much wealth; पुरा (purā) - formerly; दृष्टवत्यस्मि (dṛṣṭavatyasmi) - I have seen; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सा (sā) - she; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; चीरिणम् (cīriṇam) - clad in bark;]
(Who indeed you with silk garments white with much wealth formerly I have seen O king she you I see clad in bark.)
O king, she who once saw you adorned in white silk garments and great wealth, now sees you clad in bark. (3-28-14)
यच्च तद्रुक्मपात्रीभिर्ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सहस्रशः। ह्रियते ते गृहादन्नं संस्कृतं सार्वकामिकम् ॥३-२८-१५॥
yacca tadrukmapātrībhirbrāhmaṇebhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ। hriyate te gṛhād annaṃ saṃskṛtaṃ sārvakāmikam ॥3-28-15॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; रुक्मपात्रीभिः (rukmapātrībhiḥ) - by golden vessels; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; ह्रियते (hriyate) - is taken; ते (te) - your; गृहात् (gṛhāt) - from house; अन्नम् (annam) - food; संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam) - purified; सार्वकामिकम् (sārvakāmikam) - fulfilling all desires;]
(Which and that by golden vessels to Brāhmaṇas by thousands is taken your from house food purified fulfilling all desires.)
And whatever food, purified and fulfilling all desires, is taken from your house by Brāhmaṇas in thousands with golden vessels, (3-28-15)
यतीनामगृहाणां ते तथैव गृहमेधिनाम्। दीयते भोजनं राजन्नतीव गुणवत्प्रभो ॥ तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३-२८-१६॥
yatīnām agṛhāṇām te tathaiva gṛhamedhinām। dīyate bhojanaṃ rājann atīva guṇavat prabho॥ tac ca rājan napaśyantyāḥ kā śāntir hṛdayasya me॥3-28-16॥
[यतीनाम् (yatīnām) - of ascetics; अगृहाणाम् (agṛhāṇām) - of the houseless; ते (te) - to you; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; गृहमेधिनाम् (gṛhamedhinām) - of householders; दीयते (dīyate) - is given; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; गुणवत् (guṇavat) - excellent; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अपश्यन्त्याः (napaśyantyāḥ) - not seeing; का (kā) - what; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; हृदयस्य (hṛdayasya) - of the heart; मे (me) - my;]
(Of ascetics, of the houseless, to you, in the same way, of householders, is given food, O king, exceedingly excellent, O lord. That and, O king, not seeing, what peace of the heart (is) my. (3-28-16))
O king, food is given to you, to ascetics, to the houseless, and likewise to householders, and it is exceedingly excellent, O lord. But, O king, as I do not see that, what peace can there be for my heart? (3-28-16)
यांस्ते भ्रातॄन्महाराज युवानो मृष्टकुण्डलाः। अभोजयन्त मृष्टान्नैः सूदाः परमसंस्कृतैः ॥३-२८-१७॥
yāṃs te bhrātṝn mahārāja yuvānaḥ mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ। abhojayanta mṛṣṭānnaiḥ sūdāḥ paramasaṃskṛtaiḥ ॥3-28-17॥
[यांस् (yāṃs) - whom; (accusative plural masculine); ते (te) - your; (of you); भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; (accusative plural); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; युवानः (yuvānaḥ) - young; (plural); मृष्टकुण्डलाः (mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ) - wearing polished earrings; (plural); अभोजयन्त (abhojayanta) - caused to eat; (fed); मृष्टान्नैः (mṛṣṭānnaiḥ) - with delicious food; (instrumental plural); सूदाः (sūdāḥ) - cooks; (plural); परमसंस्कृतैः (paramasaṃskṛtaiḥ) - by those of highest refinement; (instrumental plural);]
(Whom your brothers, O great king, young, wearing polished earrings, the cooks caused to eat with delicious food by those of highest refinement.)
O great king, the cooks, who were of the highest refinement, served your brothers—young men adorned with polished earrings—with delicious food. (3-28-17)
सर्वांस्तानद्य पश्यामि वने वन्येन जीवतः। अदुःखार्हान्मनुष्येन्द्र नोपशाम्यति मे मनः ॥३-२८-१८॥
sarvāṃs tān adya paśyāmi vane vanyena jīvataḥ। aduḥkhārhān manuṣyendra nopaśāmyati me manaḥ ॥3-28-18॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; (accusative plural masculine); तान् (tān) - those; (accusative plural masculine); अद्य (adya) - today; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; वने (vane) - in the forest; वन्येन (vanyena) - with wild (life); जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - living; अदुःखार्हान् (aduḥkhārhān) - not deserving of sorrow; (accusative plural masculine); मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; न (na) - not; उपशाम्यति (upaśāmyati) - subsides; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(All those today I see in the forest living with wild (life), not deserving of sorrow, O king of men, not subsides my mind.)
O king of men, today I see all those living in the forest with wild creatures, who do not deserve sorrow, yet my mind does not become calm. (3-28-18)
भीमसेनमिमं चापि दुःखितं वनवासिनम्। ध्यायन्तं किं न मन्युस्ते प्राप्ते काले विवर्धते ॥३-२८-१९॥
bhīmasenam imaṃ ca api duḥkhitaṃ vanavāsinam। dhyāyantaṃ kiṃ na manyus te prāpte kāle vivardhate ॥3-28-19॥

सत्कृतं विविधैर्यानैर्वस्त्रैरुच्चावचैस्तथा। तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-२१॥

He who was honored with various vehicles, garments, and all sorts of luxuries—having seen him now gone to the forest, why does your anger not arise? (3-28-21)
कुरूनपि हि यः सर्वान्हन्तुमुत्सहते प्रभुः। त्वत्प्रसादं प्रतीक्षंस्तु सहतेऽयं वृकोदरः ॥३-२८-२२॥
kurūn api hi yaḥ sarvān hantum utsahate prabhuḥ। tvat-prasādaṃ pratīkṣan tu sahate 'yaṃ vṛkodaraḥ ॥3-28-22॥
[कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to slay; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; प्रतीक्षन् (pratīkṣan) - awaiting; तु (tu) - but; सहते (sahate) - endures; अयम् (ayam) - this; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara;]
(Who indeed, even the Kurus, all, to slay, is able, the lord; your favor awaiting, but, endures, this, Vṛkodara.)
This Vṛkodara, who is indeed able to slay all the Kurus, endures, awaiting your favor. (3-28-22)
योऽर्जुनेनार्जुनस्तुल्यो द्विबाहुर्बहुबाहुना। शरातिसर्गे शीघ्रत्वात्कालान्तकयमोपमः ॥३-२८-२३॥
yo'ṛjunenārjunastulyo dvibāhurbahubāhunā। śarātisarge śīghratvātkālāntakayamopamaḥ ॥3-28-23॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; द्विबाहुः (dvibāhuḥ) - two-armed; बहुबाहुना (bahubāhunā) - by the many-armed; शरातिसर्गे (śarātisarge) - in the discharge of arrows; शीघ्रत्वात् (śīghratvāt) - because of swiftness; कालान्तकयमोपमः (kālāntakayamopamaḥ) - like Yama, the ender of time;]
(Who by Arjuna, Arjuna, equal, two-armed, by the many-armed, in the discharge of arrows, because of swiftness, like Yama, the ender of time.)
He who, being equal to Arjuna by Arjuna, two-armed, by the many-armed, is like Yama, the ender of time, because of his swiftness in the discharge of arrows. (3-28-23)
यस्य शस्त्रप्रतापेन प्रणताः सर्वपार्थिवाः। यज्ञे तव महाराज ब्राह्मणानुपतस्थिरे ॥३-२८-२४॥
yasya śastrapratāpena praṇatāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ। yajñe tava mahārāja brāhmaṇānupatast hire ॥3-28-24॥

All the kings, subdued by his martial prowess, bowed down; and in your sacrifice, O great king, the brāhmaṇas assembled. (3-28-24)
तमिमं पुरुषव्याघ्रं पूजितं देवदानवैः। ध्यायन्तमर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-२५॥
tam imaṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ pūjitaṃ devadānavaiḥ। dhyāyantam arjunaṃ dṛṣṭvā kasmān manyur na vardhate ॥3-28-25॥

दृष्ट्वा वनगतं पार्थमदुःखार्हं सुखोचितम्। न च ते वर्धते मन्युस्तेन मुह्यामि भारत ॥३-२८-२६॥
dṛṣṭvā vanagataṃ pārtham aduḥkhārhaṃ sukhocitam। na ca te vardhate manyus tena muhyāmi bhārata ॥3-28-26॥

O Bhārata, seeing Pārtha, who has gone to the forest, who does not deserve sorrow and is fit for happiness, and since your anger does not increase, I am bewildered by that. (3-28-26)
यो देवांश्च मनुष्यांश्च सर्पांश्चैकरथोऽजयत्। तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-२७॥

यो यानैरद्भुताकारैर्हयैर्नागैश्च संवृतः। प्रसह्य वित्तान्यादत्त पार्थिवेभ्यः परन्तपः ॥३-२८-२८॥
yo yānair adbhutākārair hayair nāgaiś ca saṁvṛtaḥ। prasahya vittāny ādatta pārthivebhyaḥ parantapaḥ ॥3-28-28॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; अद्भुताकारैः (adbhutākāraiḥ) - of wonderful forms; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - by horses; नागैः (nágaiḥ) - by elephants; च (ca) - and; संवृतः (saṁvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; वित्तानि (vittāni) - wealth; आदत्त (ādatta) - took; पार्थिवेभ्यः (pārthivebhyaḥ) - from kings; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes;]
(Who, by vehicles of wonderful forms, by horses, by elephants, and surrounded, by force took wealth from kings, the scorcher of foes.)
He, surrounded by vehicles of wondrous forms, horses, and elephants, seized wealth from kings by force, being a scorcher of foes. (3-28-28)
क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः। तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-२९॥
kṣipaty ekena vegena pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ। taṃ te vanagataṃ dṛṣṭvā kasmān manyur na vardhate॥3-28-29॥

(Who throws hundreds of arrows with one speed, having seen him, your one gone to the forest, why does anger not arise?)
Why does anger not arise in you, having seen the one who, with a single motion, throws hundreds of arrows, and who has gone to the forest? (3-28-29)
श्यामं बृहन्तं तरुणं चर्मिणामुत्तमं रणे। नकुलं ते वने दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-३०॥
śyāmaṃ bṛhantaṃ taruṇaṃ carmiṇām uttamaṃ raṇe। nakulaṃ te vane dṛṣṭvā kasmān manyur na vardhate ॥3-28-30॥
[श्यामं (śyāmaṃ) - dark-complexioned; बृहन्तं (bṛhantaṃ) - large; तरुणं (taruṇaṃ) - young; चर्मिणाम् (carminām) - of those with hides (warriors with armor); उत्तमं (uttamaṃ) - the best; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; नकुलं (nakulaṃ) - Nakula; ते (te) - your; वने (vane) - in the forest; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; न (na) - not; वर्धते (vardhate) - arises;]
(Dark-complexioned, large, young, of those with hides the best, in battle; Nakula, your, in the forest, having seen, why, anger, not, arises.)
Why does your anger not arise, having seen Nakula, who is dark-complexioned, large, young, the best among warriors in battle, in the forest? (3-28-30)
दर्शनीयं च शूरं च माद्रीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिर। सहदेवं वने दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-३१॥
darśanīyaṃ ca śūraṃ ca mādrīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhira। sahadevaṃ vane dṛṣṭvā kasmān manyur na vardhate ॥3-28-31॥
[दर्शनीयं (darśanīyaṃ) - worthy of being seen; च (ca) - and; शूरं (śūram) - valiant; च (ca) - and; माद्रीपुत्रं (mādrīputram) - son of Mādrī; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सहदेवं (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; वने (vane) - in the forest; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; न (na) - not; वर्धते (vardhate) - arises;]
(Worthy of being seen and valiant and the son of Mādrī, Yudhiṣṭhira, having seen Sahadeva in the forest, why does anger not arise?)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, seeing Sahadeva, the valiant and worthy son of Mādrī, in the forest, why does anger not arise? (3-28-31)
द्रुपदस्य कुले जातां स्नुषां पाण्डोर्महात्मनः। मां ते वनगतां दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३-२८-३२॥
drupadasya kule jātāṃ snuṣāṃ pāṇḍor mahātmanaḥ। māṃ te vanagatāṃ dṛṣṭvā kasmān manyur na vardhate ॥3-28-32॥
[द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; कुले (kule) - in the family; जातां (jātām) - born; स्नुषां (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; माम् (mām) - me; ते (te) - your; वनगताम् (vanagatām) - gone to the forest; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; न (na) - not; वर्धते (vardhate) - arises;]
(Of Drupada, in the family, born, daughter-in-law, of Pāṇḍu, the great-souled, me, your, gone to the forest, having seen, why, anger, not, arises.)
Why does not anger arise in you, seeing me, the daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pāṇḍu, born in the family of Drupada, gone to the forest? (3-28-32)
नूनं च तव नैवास्ति मन्युर्भरतसत्तम। यत्ते भ्रातॄंश्च मां चैव दृष्ट्वा न व्यथते मनः ॥३-२८-३३॥
nūnaṃ ca tava naivāsti manyur bharatasattama। yat te bhrātṝṃś ca māṃ caiva dṛṣṭvā na vyathate manaḥ ॥3-28-33॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; यत् (yat) - because; ते (te) - your; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; न (na) - not; व्यथते (vyathate) - is disturbed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Certainly and your not indeed is anger, O best of the Bharatas; because your brothers and me and indeed having seen, not is disturbed mind.)
Certainly, O best of the Bharatas, there is indeed no anger in you; for, seeing your brothers and me, your mind is not disturbed. (3-28-33)
न निर्मन्युः क्षत्रियोऽस्ति लोके निर्वचनं स्मृतम्। तदद्य त्वयि पश्यामि क्षत्रिये विपरीतवत् ॥३-२८-३४॥
na nirmanyuḥ kṣatriyo'sti loke nirvacanaṃ smṛtam। tadadya tvayi paśyāmi kṣatriye viparītavat ॥3-28-34॥
[न (na) - not; निर्मन्युः (nirmanyuḥ) - without anger; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - kṣatriya; (warrior caste); अस्ति (asti) - is; लोके (loke) - in the world; निर्वचनम् (nirvacanam) - definition; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - remembered; तत् (tat) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; क्षत्रिये (kṣatriye) - in a kṣatriya; विपरीतवत् (viparītavat) - as contrary;]
(Not without anger is a kṣatriya in the world, the definition is remembered; that today in you I see, in a kṣatriya as contrary.)
It is remembered that a kṣatriya is never without anger in this world; but today, in you, O kṣatriya, I see the opposite. (3-28-34)
यो न दर्शयते तेजः क्षत्रियः काल आगते। सर्वभूतानि तं पार्थ सदा परिभवन्त्युत ॥३-२८-३५॥
yo na darśayate tejaḥ kṣatriyaḥ kāla āgate। sarvabhūtāni taṃ pārtha sadā paribhavantyuta ॥3-28-35॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; दर्शयते (darśayate) - shows; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - kṣatriya; काल (kāla) - time; आगते (āgate) - having come; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; तम् (tam) - him; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; सदा (sadā) - always; परिभवन्ति (paribhavanti) - disregard; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Who does not show energy, the kṣatriya, when time has come; all beings him, O Pārtha, always disregard indeed.)
O Pārtha, a kṣatriya who does not display energy when the time has come is always disregarded by all beings. (3-28-35)
तत्त्वया न क्षमा कार्या शत्रून्प्रति कथञ्चन। तेजसैव हि ते शक्या निहन्तुं नात्र संशयः ॥३-२८-३६॥
tattvayā na kṣamā kāryā śatrūnprati kathañcana। tejasāiva hi te śakyā nihantuṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥3-28-36॥
[तत् (tat) - that; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; न (na) - not; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; प्रति (prati) - towards; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; तेजसा (tejasā) - by energy; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; ते (te) - they; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - can be; निहन्तुम् (nihantum) - to be destroyed; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(That by you not forgiveness should be done towards enemies in any way. By energy indeed for they can be destroyed; not here doubt.)
Therefore, you should not show forgiveness towards enemies in any way. They can only be destroyed by your energy; there is no doubt about this. (3-28-36)
तथैव यः क्षमाकाले क्षत्रियो नोपशाम्यति। अप्रियः सर्वभूतानां सोऽमुत्रेह च नश्यति ॥३-२८-३७॥
tathaiva yaḥ kṣamākāle kṣatriyo nopaśāmyati। apriyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ so'mutreha ca naśyati ॥3-28-37॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षमाकाले (kṣamākāle) - at the time for forgiveness; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; न (na) - not; उपशाम्यति (upaśāmyati) - becomes calm; अप्रियः (apriyaḥ) - unpleasant; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - to all beings; सः (saḥ) - he; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the next world); इह (iha) - here (in this world); च (ca) - and; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes;]
(In the same way, who at the time for forgiveness a kṣatriya does not become calm, unpleasant to all beings, he there here and perishes.)
Likewise, a kṣatriya who does not become calm at the time for forgiveness, and is unpleasant to all beings, perishes both here and in the next world. (3-28-37)
