Bṛhadaśva said.
सा नमस्कृत्य देवेभ्यः प्रहस्य नलमब्रवीत्। प्रणयस्व यथाश्रद्धं राजन्किं करवाणि ते ॥०३-५३-१॥
sā namaskṛtya devebhyaḥ prahasya nalam abravīt। praṇayasva yathāśraddhaṃ rājan kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥03-53-1॥
[सा (sā) - she; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - to the gods; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; नलम् (nalam) - to Nala; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she said; प्रणयस्व (praṇayasva) - express affection; यथाश्रद्धं (yathāśraddham) - as per faith; राजन् (rājan) - O king; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(She, having bowed to the gods, having smiled, to Nala she said: "Express affection as per faith, O king, what shall I do for you?" (03-53-1))
She bowed to the gods, smiled, and said to Nala: "Show affection as you see fit, O king; what do you want me to do for you?" (03-53-1)
अहं चैव हि यच्चान्यन्ममास्ति वसु किञ्चन। सर्वं तत्तव विश्रब्धं कुरु प्रणयमीश्वर ॥०३-५३-२॥
ahaṁ caiva hi yaccānyan mamāsti vasu kiñcana। sarvaṁ tat tava viśrabdhaṁ kuru praṇayāmīśvara ॥03-53-2॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; यच्च (yaccā) - and whatever; अन्यन् (anyan) - else; मम (mama) - of me; my; अस्ति (asti) - there is; वसु (vasu) - wealth; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - any; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; तत् (tat) - that; तव (tava) - your; विश्रब्धं (viśrabdham) - confidently; trustingly; कुरु (kuru) - do; प्रणय (praṇaya) - dispose; assign; ईश्वर (īśvara) - O Lord;]
(I and indeed for, and whatever else of me there is any wealth, all that, your, confidently, do, dispose, O Lord.)
O Lord, I and indeed, whatever other wealth I have, all of it—confidently dispose of as your own.
हंसानां वचनं यत्तत्तन्मां दहति पार्थिव। त्वत्कृते हि मया वीर राजानः संनिपातिताः ॥०३-५३-३॥
haṁsānāṁ vacanaṁ yat tat tan māṁ dahati pārthiva। tvat-kṛte hi mayā vīra rājānaḥ saṁnipātitāḥ॥03-53-3॥
[हंसानाम् (haṁsānām) - of the swans; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; तन् (tan) - that (emphatic particle); माम् (mām) - me; दहति (dahati) - burns; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; त्वत्-कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; वीर (vīra) - O hero; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; संनिपातिताः (saṁnipātitāḥ) - have been gathered together;]
(O king, the statement of the swans, that which—that—burns me. Indeed, for your sake, O hero, by me the kings have been gathered together.)
O king, the words of the swans burn me. Indeed, O hero, for your sake I have gathered together the kings. (03-53-3)
यदि चेद्भजमानां मां प्रत्याख्यास्यसि मानद। विषमग्निं जलं रज्जुमास्थास्ये तव कारणात् ॥०३-५३-४॥
yadi ced bhajamānāṁ māṁ pratyākhyāsyasi mānada। viṣam-agniṁ jalaṁ rajjuṁ āsthāsye tava kāraṇāt ॥03-53-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; चेत् (cet) - indeed; भजमानां (bhajamānām) - devoted (one); माम् (mām) - me; प्रत्याख्यास्यसि (pratyākhyāsyasi) - you will reject; मानद (mānada) - O bestower of honor; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; अग्निं (agniṁ) - fire; जलम् (jalaṁ) - water; रज्जुम् (rajjuṁ) - rope; आस्थास्ये (āsthāsye) - I will resort to; तव (tava) - because of you; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - by reason;]
(If indeed me, devoted (one), you will reject, O bestower of honor, poison, fire, water, rope, I will resort to because of you, by reason.)
If you, O bestower of honor, truly reject me who am devoted to you, I will resort to poison, fire, water, or a rope, all for your sake. (03-53-4)
एवमुक्तस्तु वैदर्भ्या नलस्तां प्रत्युवाच ह। तिष्ठत्सु लोकपालेषु कथं मानुषमिच्छसि ॥०३-५३-५॥
evam-uktas-tu vaidarbhya nalas-tāṁ pratyuvāca ha। tiṣṭhatsu lokapāleṣu kathaṁ mānuṣam icchasi॥03-53-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; वैदर्भ्या (vaidarbhya) - by the princess of Vidarbha; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; ताम् (tām) - her; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ह (ha) - indeed; तिष्ठत्सु (tiṣṭhatsu) - while standing; लोकपालेषु (lokapāleṣu) - among the guardians of the worlds; कथम् (katham) - how; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - a human; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you desire;]
(Thus having been addressed by the princess of Vidarbha, Nala indeed replied to her: While the guardians of the worlds are standing (present), how do you desire a human?)
Thus, when addressed by the princess of Vidarbha, Nala replied to her: 'While the world-guardians are present, why do you wish for a mortal?' (03-53-5)
येषामहं लोककृतामीश्वराणां महात्मनाम्। न पादरजसा तुल्यो मनस्ते तेषु वर्तताम् ॥०३-५३-६॥
yeṣām ahaṃ loka-kṛtām īśvarāṇāṃ mahātmanām। na pāda-rajasā tulyo manas te teṣu vartatām॥03-53-6॥
[येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; लोककृताम् (loka-kṛtām) - of the creators of the worlds; ईश्वराणाम् (īśvarāṇām) - of the lords; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great souls; न (na) - not; पादरजसा (pāda-rajasā) - with the dust of the feet; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ते (te) - their; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; वर्तताम् (vartatām) - may it dwell;]
(Of whom I, of the creators of the worlds, of the lords, of the great souls—not with the dust of the feet—equal (is) (my) mind; may their mind dwell among those.)
May my mind dwell among those great-souled lords who are the creators of the worlds, to whom even the dust of their feet I am not equal. (03-53-6)
विप्रियं ह्याचरन्मर्त्यो देवानां मृत्युमृच्छति। त्राहि मामनवद्याङ्गि वरयस्व सुरोत्तमान् ॥०३-५३-७॥
vipriyaṃ hy ācaran martyo devānāṃ mṛtyum ṛcchati। trāhi mām anavadyāṅgi varayasva surottamān ॥03-53-7॥
[विप्रियं (vipriyam) - displeasing act; हि (hi) - indeed; आचरन् (ācaran) - performing; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; माम् (mām) - me; अनवद्याङ्गि (anavadyāṅgi) - O one with impeccable limbs; वरयस्व (varayasva) - choose; सुरोत्तमान् (surottamān) - the best of the gods;]
(Indeed, a mortal performing that which is displeasing to the gods attains death. Protect me, O one with impeccable limbs; choose the best of the gods.)
If a mortal performs acts displeasing to the gods, he surely meets with death. Protect me, O flawless one, and choose the best among the gods. (03-53-7)
ततो बाष्पकलां वाचं दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता। प्रव्याहरन्ती शनकैर्नलं राजानमब्रवीत् ॥०३-५३-८॥
tato bāṣpakalāṃ vācaṃ damayantī śucismitā। pravyāharantī śanakair nalaṃ rājanam abravīt ॥03-53-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; बाष्पकलाम् (bāṣpakalām) - choked-with-tears; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; शुचिस्मिता (śucismitā) - pure-smiling; प्रव्याहरन्ती (pravyāharantī) - uttering; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - softly; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; राजानम् (rājanam) - king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then, choked-with-tears speech Damayantī pure-smiling, uttering softly to Nala king said.)
Then Damayantī, with a pure smile and tear-choked voice, spoke softly and said to King Nala. (03-53-8)
अस्त्युपायो मया दृष्टो निरपायो नरेश्वर। येन दोषो न भविता तव राजन्कथञ्चन ॥०३-५३-९॥
astyupāyo mayā dṛṣṭo nirapāyo nareśvara। yena doṣo na bhavitā tava rājan kathaṃcana ॥03-53-9॥
[अस्त्युपायः (asti upāyaḥ) - there is a method; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - perceived; निरपायः (nirapāyaḥ) - free from harm; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O lord of men; येन (yena) - by which; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - error; न (na) - not; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(There is a method by me perceived free from harm O lord of men; by which error not will be your O king in any way.)
O king, I have perceived a method, free from harm, by which no fault will arise for you in any way. (03-53-9)
त्वं चैव हि नरश्रेष्ठ देवाश्चाग्निपुरोगमाः। आयान्तु सहिताः सर्वे मम यत्र स्वयंवरः ॥०३-५३-१०॥
tvaṃ caiva hi naraśreṣṭha devāścāgnipurogamāḥ। āyāntu sahitāḥ sarve mama yatra svayaṃvaraḥ ॥03-53-10॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best among men; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; अग्निपुरोगमाः (agnipurogamāḥ) - with Agni at their head; आयान्तु (āyāntu) - may they come; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मम (mama) - my; यत्र (yatra) - where; स्वयंवरः (svayaṃvaraḥ) - self-choice ceremony;]
(You and indeed, O best among men, and the gods with Agni at their head, may come all together to my where self-choice ceremony.)
You also, O best of men, as well as the gods led by Agni, may you all together come to the place where my self-choice ceremony will be held. (03-53-10)
ततोऽहं लोकपालानां संनिधौ त्वां नरेश्वर। वरयिष्ये नरव्याघ्र नैवं दोषो भविष्यति ॥०३-५३-११॥
tato'haṃ lokapālānāṃ sannidhau tvāṃ nareśvara. varayiṣye naravyāghra naivaṃ doṣo bhaviṣyati ॥03-53-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अहम् (aham) - I; लोकपालानाम् (lokapālānām) - of the protectors of the worlds; सन्निधौ (sannidhau) - in the presence; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O king of men; वरयिष्ये (varayiṣye) - I will choose; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Thereafter I, in the presence of the protectors of the worlds, you, O king of men, will choose, O tiger among men; not thus fault will be.)
Thereafter, O king of men, I will choose you in the presence of the protectors of the worlds, O tiger among men; in this way, there will be no fault. (03-53-11)
एवमुक्तस्तु वैदर्भ्या नलो राजा विशां पते। आजगाम पुनस्तत्र यत्र देवाः समागताः ॥०३-५३-१२॥
evam-uktas tu vaidarbhyā nalo rājā viśāṃ pate। ājagāma punas tatra yatra devāḥ samāgatāḥ॥03-53-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; वैदर्भ्या (vaidarbhyā) - by the princess of Vidarbha; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; आजगाम (ājagāma) - he (Nala) came; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Thus spoken by the princess of Vidarbha, but Nala, O king of men, came again to the place where the gods had assembled.)
Thus, when spoken by the princess of Vidarbha, King Nala, O lord of men, again went to the place where the gods were assembled. (03-53-12)
तमपश्यंस्तथायान्तं लोकपालाः सहेश्वराः। दृष्ट्वा चैनं ततोऽपृच्छन्वृत्तान्तं सर्वमेव तत् ॥०३-५३-१३॥
tam apaśyaṁs tathā yāntaṁ lokapālāḥ saheśvarāḥ। dṛṣṭvā ca enaṁ tato 'pṛcchan vṛttāntaṁ sarvam eva tat ॥03-53-13॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - saw; तथा (tathā) - thus; यान्तं (yāntam) - approaching; लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - guardians of the worlds; सह (saha) - together with; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - lords; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपृच्छन् (apṛcchan) - enquired; वृत्तान्तं (vṛttāntam) - the full account; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Him saw thus approaching the guardians of the worlds together with the lords. Having seen him, then enquired the entire account, indeed, that.)
The guardians of the worlds together with the lords saw him thus approaching. Seeing him, they then asked him for the entire account.
देवा ऊचुः॥

[देवा (devā) - the gods; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke;]
(The gods spoke.)
The gods said.
कच्चिद्दृष्टा त्वया राजन्दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता। किमब्रवीच्च नः सर्वान्वद भूमिपतेऽनघ ॥०३-५३-१४॥
kacciddṛṣṭā tvayā rājan damayantī śucismitā। kimabravīc ca naḥ sarvān vada bhūmipate'nagha ॥03-53-14॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; शुचि-स्मिता (śuci-smitā) - pure-smiling; किम् (kim) - what; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - did (she) say; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - to us; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वद (vada) - tell; भूमिपते (bhūmipate) - O lord of the earth; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Whether seen by you, O king, Damayanti, pure-smiling—what did (she) say and to us all, tell, O lord of the earth, O sinless one.)
O king, have you seen Damayanti with the pure smile? What did she say to all of us? Please tell, O lord of the earth, O sinless one. (03-53-14)

भवद्भिरहमादिष्टो दमयन्त्या निवेशनम्। प्रविष्टः सुमहाकक्ष्यं दण्डिभिः स्थविरैर्वृतम् ॥०३-५३-१५॥
bhavadbhir aham ādiṣṭo damayantyā niveśanam। praviṣṭaḥ sumahā-kakṣyaṃ daṇḍibhiḥ sthavirair vṛtam ॥03-53-15॥
[भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; आदिष्टः (ādiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - by Damayantī; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - residence; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; सुमहाकक्ष्यम् (sumahākakṣyam) - very great chamber; दण्डिभिः (daṇḍibhiḥ) - by staff-bearers; स्थविरैः (sthaviraiḥ) - by elders; वृतम् (vṛtam) - surrounded;]
(By you I, having been instructed by Damayantī, entered the residence, (which was) a very great chamber, surrounded by staff-bearers and elders.)
I was sent by you and, instructed by Damayantī, entered the residence—an immense chamber guarded by staff-bearers and elders. (03-53-15)
प्रविशन्तं च मां तत्र न कश्चिद्दृष्टवान्नरः। ऋते तां पार्थिवसुतां भवतामेव तेजसा ॥०३-५३-१६॥
praviśantaṃ ca māṃ tatra na kaścid dṛṣṭavān naraḥ। ṛte tāṃ pārthivasutāṃ bhavatām eva tejasā ॥03-53-16॥
[प्रविशन्तम् (praviśantam) - entering; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - saw; नरः (naraḥ) - man; ऋते (ṛte) - except; ताम् (tām) - her; पार्थिवसुताम् (pārthivasutām) - princess; भवताम् (bhavatām) - your; एव (eva) - only; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance;]
(And entering me there, not any man saw, except her—the princess—by your only brilliance.)
And when I entered there, no man saw me except her, the princess, due only to your brilliance. (03-53-16)
सख्यश्चास्या मया दृष्टास्ताभिश्चाप्युपलक्षितः। विस्मिताश्चाभवन्दृष्ट्वा सर्वा मां विबुधेश्वराः ॥०३-५३-१७॥
sakhyaś cāsyā mayā dṛṣṭās tābhiś cāpy upalakṣitaḥ। vismitāś cābhavan dṛṣṭvā sarvā māṃ vibudheśvarāḥ॥03-53-17॥
[सख्यः (sakhyaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - seen; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपलक्षितः (upalakṣitaḥ) - noticed; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; च (ca) - and; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; माम् (mām) - me; विबुधेश्वराः (vibudheśvarāḥ) - lords of the wise (gods);]
(Friends of her by me were seen, by them also noticed; astonished and became, having seen all me, lords of the wise (gods).)
Her friends were seen by me and I was also noticed by them. All the lords of the gods were astonished upon seeing me. (03-53-17)
वर्ण्यमानेषु च मया भवत्सु रुचिरानना। मामेव गतसङ्कल्पा वृणीते सुरसत्तमाः ॥०३-५३-१८॥
varṇyamāneṣu ca mayā bhavatsu rucirānanā। mām eva gata-saṅkalpā vṛṇīte surasattamāḥ॥03-53-18॥
[वर्ण्यमानेषु (varṇyamāneṣu) - being described; as objects of choice; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; भवत्सु (bhavatsu) - among you (all); रुचिरानना (rucirānanā) - one with a beautiful face; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; गतसङ्कल्पा (gata-saṅkalpā) - having lost resolve; वृणीते (vṛṇīte) - chooses; सुरसत्तमाः (sura-sattamāḥ) - the best among the gods;]
(And when being described as objects of choice by me among you, O beautiful-faced one, the best among the gods, having lost resolve, chooses only me.)
And as I describe all of you as options, O lovely-faced one, the foremost of the gods, with her confusion gone, chooses only me. (03-53-18)
अब्रवीच्चैव मां बाला आयान्तु सहिताः सुराः। त्वया सह नरश्रेष्ठ मम यत्र स्वयंवरः ॥०३-५३-१९॥
abravīc caiva māṃ bālā āyāntu sahitāḥ surāḥ। tvayā saha naraśreṣṭha mama yatra svayaṃvaraḥ॥03-53-19॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माम् (mām) - to me; बाला (bālā) - the young woman; आयान्तु (āyāntu) - let come; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सह (saha) - together with; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; मम (mama) - my; यत्र (yatra) - where; स्वयंवरः (svayaṃvaraḥ) - self-choice (marriage);]
(She indeed said to me, "Let the young woman and the gods come together, with you, O best of men, where my self-choice (marriage) is." (03-53-19))
She then said to me, "Let the maiden and the gods come together, along with you, O best of men, to where my svayamvara (self-choice ceremony) is." (03-53-19)
तेषामहं संनिधौ त्वां वरयिष्ये नरोत्तम। एवं तव महाबाहो दोषो न भवितेति ह ॥०३-५३-२०॥
teṣāmahaṃ saṃnidhau tvāṃ varayiṣye narottama। evaṃ tava mahābāho doṣo na bhaviteti ha ॥03-53-20॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वरयिष्ये (varayiṣye) - (I) will choose; नरोत्तम (narottama) - O best of men; एवम् (evam) - thus; तव (tava) - your; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; न (na) - not; भवेत् (bhavet) - will be; इति (iti) - thus; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Of them I in the presence you will choose, O best of men. Thus, O mighty-armed, your fault will not be, indeed thus.)
O best of men, I will choose you in their presence. Thus, O mighty-armed one, you will not incur any fault. (03-53-20)
एतावदेव विबुधा यथावृत्तमुदाहृतम्। मयाशेषं प्रमाणं तु भवन्तस्त्रिदशेश्वराः ॥०३-५३-२१॥
etāvadeva vibudhā yathāvṛttam udāhṛtam। mayāśeṣaṃ pramāṇaṃ tu bhavantaḥ tridaśeśvarāḥ॥03-53-21॥
[एतावत् एव (etāvat eva) - just this much; only this; विबुधाः (vibudhāḥ) - O wise ones; (O gods;) यथा-वृत्तम् (yathā-vṛttam) - as it happened; उदाहृतम् (udāhṛtam) - has been related; मया (mayā) - by me; अशेषम् (aśeṣam) - entirely; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - evidence; authority; तु (tu) - but; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; त्रिदश-ईश्वराः (tridaśa-īśvarāḥ) - O lords of the gods;]
(Just this much, O wise ones, as it happened, has been related by me. The entire evidence, but, you all, O lords of the gods.)
O gods, I have narrated only this much as it happened. The rest of the evidence, O lords of the gods, belongs to you. (03-53-21)
