Bṛhadaśva said.
वृते तु नैषधे भैम्या लोकपाला महौजसः। यान्तो ददृशुरायान्तं द्वापरं कलिना सह ॥०३-५५-१॥
vṛte tu naiṣadhe bhaimyā lokapālā mahoujasaḥ। yānto dadṛśur āyāntaṃ dvāparaṃ kalinā saha ॥03-55-1॥
[वृते (vṛte) - having been surrounded; तु (tu) - but; नैषधे (naiṣadhe) - by the son of Nala; भैम्या (bhaimyā) - by the daughter of Bhīma; लोकपाला (lokapālā) - guardians of the worlds; महौजसः (mahoujasaḥ) - possessing great energy; यान्तः (yāntaḥ) - departing; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; द्वापरम् (dvāparam) - Dvāpra (the personified age); कलिना (kalinā) - with Kali; सह (saha) - together;]
(But, surrounded by the Naiṣadha and by Bhīmī, the guardians of the worlds, of great might, departing, saw Dvāpara approaching together with Kali.)
But as the mighty guardians of the worlds, surrounded by the Naiṣadha and Bhīmī, were departing, they saw Dvāpara approaching together with Kali. (03-55-1)
अथाब्रवीत्कलिं शक्रः सम्प्रेक्ष्य बलवृत्रहा। द्वापरेण सहायेन कले ब्रूहि क्व यास्यसि ॥०३-५५-२॥
athābravīt kaliṁ śakraḥ samprekṣya balavṛtrahā। dvāpareṇa sahāyena kale brūhi kva yāsyasi ॥03-55-2॥
[अथा (athā) (athā) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) (abravīt) - spoke; कलीं (kaliṁ) (kaliṁ) - to Kali; शक्रः (śakraḥ) (śakraḥ) - Indra; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) (samprekṣya) - having seen; बलवृत्रहा (balavṛtrahā) (balavṛtrahā) - the slayer of Balavṛtra; द्वापरेण (dvāpareṇa) (dvāpareṇa) - with Dvāpara; सहायेन (sahāyena) (sahāyena) - with help; कले (kale) (kale) - O Kali; ब्रूहि (brūhi) (brūhi) - tell; क्व (kva) (kva) - where; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) (yāsyasi) - you will go;]
(Then spoke to Kali Indra, having seen (him), the slayer of Balavṛtra; with Dvāpara as help, O Kali, tell where you will go.)
Then Indra, the slayer of Balavṛtra, saw Kali and said, "With Dvāpara as your ally, O Kali, tell me where you will go." (03-55-2)
ततोऽब्रवीत्कलिः शक्रं दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम्। गत्वाहं वरयिष्ये तां मनो हि मम तद्गतम् ॥०३-५५-३॥
tato'bravīt kaliḥ śakraṃ damayantyāḥ svayaṃvaram। gatvāhaṃ varayiṣye tāṃ mano hi mama tadgatam॥03-55-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; शक्रं (śakram) - Śakra (Indra); दमयन्त्याः (damayantyāḥ) - of Damayantī; स्वयंवरम् (svayaṃvaram) - svayaṃvara (self-choice assembly); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अहम् (aham) - I; वरयिष्ये (varayiṣye) - shall choose (as wife); ताम् (tām) - her; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; तत् (tat) - that; गतम् (gatam) - gone;]
(Then Kali spoke to Śakra: "I, having gone to Damayantī's svayaṃvara, shall choose her. Indeed my mind has gone to that." (03-55-3))
Then Kali said to Śakra: "I will go to Damayantī's svayaṃvara and choose her, for my mind is drawn to her." (03-55-3)
तमब्रवीत्प्रहस्येन्द्रो निर्वृत्तः स स्वयंवरः। वृतस्तया नलो राजा पतिरस्मत्समीपतः ॥०३-५५-४॥
tam abravīt prahasya indraḥ nirvṛttaḥ saḥ svayaṃvaraḥ। vṛtaḥ tayā nalaḥ rājā patiḥ asmat-samīpataḥ ॥03-55-4॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) said; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; निर्वृत्तः (nirvṛttaḥ) - concluded; सः (saḥ) - that; स्वयंवरः (svayaṃvaraḥ) - svayamvara (self-choice ceremony); वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; तया (tayā) - by her; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; पतिः (patiḥ) - (as) husband; अस्मत्समीपतः (asmat-samīpataḥ) - from our presence;]
(Him Indra, smiling, said: 'That svayamvara is concluded. By her, king Nala has been chosen as (her) husband from our presence.')
Indra, smiling, said to him: 'The svayamvara is over. Nala, the king, has been chosen by her as her husband from among us.' (03-55-4)
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण कलिः कोपसमन्वितः। देवानामन्त्र्य तान्सर्वानुवाचेदं वचस्तदा ॥०३-५५-५॥
evam-uktas tu śakreṇa kaliḥ kopasamanvitaḥ। devān āmantrya tān sarvān uvāca idaṃ vacas tadā ॥03-55-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - in this way;, उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed;, तु (tu) - but;, शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra);, कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali;, कोपसमन्वितः (kopasamanvitaḥ) - filled with anger;, देवान् (devān) - the gods;, आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed;, तान् (tān) - them;, सर्वान् (sarvān) - all;, उवाच (uvāca) - spoke;, इदम् (idam) - this;, वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;, तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus addressed by Śakra, Kali, filled with anger, having addressed all those gods, spoke this speech then.)
Kali, filled with anger, having thus been addressed by Śakra (Indra), addressed all the gods and then spoke these words. (03-55-5)
देवानां मानुषं मध्ये यत्सा पतिमविन्दत। ननु तस्या भवेन्न्याय्यं विपुलं दण्डधारणम् ॥०३-५५-६॥
devānāṃ mānuṣaṃ madhye yatsā patim avindata। nanu tasyā bhaven nyāyyaṃ vipulaṃ daṇḍadhāraṇam ॥03-55-6॥
[देवानां (devānām) - of the gods; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; मध्ये (madhye) - among; यत् (yat) - that which; सा (sā) - she; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अविन्दत (avindata) - found; ननु (nanu) - indeed; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; न्याय्यम् (nyāyyam) - just; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; दण्डधारणम् (daṇḍadhāraṇam) - punishment-bearing;]
(Of the gods human among that which she husband found. Indeed of her should be just great punishment-bearing.)
She, who among humans found a husband belonging to the gods, indeed, it is only just that she should receive a great punishment. (03-55-6)
एवमुक्ते तु कलिना प्रत्यूचुस्ते दिवौकसः। अस्माभिः समनुज्ञातो दमयन्त्या नलो वृतः ॥०३-५५-७॥
evam-ukte tu kalinā pratyūcus te divaukasaḥ। asmābhiḥ samanujñāto damayantyā nalo vṛtaḥ ॥03-55-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali; प्रत्यूचुः (pratyūcuḥ) - (they) replied; ते (te) - they; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers in heaven; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; समनुज्ञातः (samanujñātaḥ) - (he) was permitted; दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - by Damayantī; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - was chosen;]
(Thus having been spoken by Kali, but they, the dwellers in heaven, replied: by us permitted, by Damayantī, Nala was chosen.)
After Kali had thus spoken, the dwellers in heaven replied: Nala was permitted by us, and was chosen by Damayantī. (03-55-7)
कश्च सर्वगुणोपेतं नाश्रयेत नलं नृपम्। यो वेद धर्मानखिलान्यथावच्चरितव्रतः ॥०३-५५-८॥
kaśca sarvaguṇopetaṁ nāśrayeta nalaṁ nṛpam। yo veda dharmāna khilānyathāvac caritavrataḥ ॥03-55-8॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; सर्वगुणोपेतम् (sarvaguṇopetam) - endowed with all virtues; न (na) - not; आश्रयेत् (āśrayet) - would take refuge; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेद (veda) - knows; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas; अखिलान् (akhilān) - all; यथावच्छरितव्रतः (yathāvac caritavrataḥ) - truly observant of vows;]
(Who and endowed with all virtues not would take refuge in Nala the king? Who knows all dharmas and truly observes vows.)
Who indeed, being endowed with all virtues, would not take refuge in King Nala—who knows all dharmas and is truly observant of vows? (03-55-8)
यस्मिन्सत्यं धृतिर्दानं तपः शौचं दमः शमः। ध्रुवाणि पुरुषव्याघ्रे लोकपालसमे नृपे ॥०३-५५-९॥
yasmin satyaṃ dhṛtir dānaṃ tapaḥ śaucaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ। dhruvāṇi puruṣavyāghre lokapālasame nṛpe॥03-55-9॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; (in which man;) सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; (truthfulness;) धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; दानं (dānaṃ) - generosity; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; शौचं (śaucaṃ) - purity; दमः (damaḥ) - self-control; शमः (śamaḥ) - tranquility; ध्रुवाणि (dhruvāṇi) - firm; पुरुषव्याघ्रे (puruṣavyāghre) - O tiger among men; लोकपालसमे (lokapālasame) - equal to the guardians of the world; नृपे (nṛpe) - in a king;]
(In whom truth, steadfastness, generosity, austerity, purity, self-control, tranquility are firm, O tiger among men, in a king equal to the guardians of the world.)
O tiger among men, in a king who is equal to the guardians of the world, those qualities—truth, steadfastness, generosity, austerity, purity, self-control, and tranquility—are firmly established. (03-55-9)
आत्मानं स शपेन्मूढो हन्याच्चात्मानमात्मना। एवङ्गुणं नलं यो वै कामयेच्छपितुं कले ॥०३-५५-१०॥
ātmānaṃ sa śapen mūḍho hanyāc cātmānam ātmanā। evaṅguṇaṃ nalaṃ yo vai kāmayec chapituṃ kale॥03-55-10॥
[आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; सः (saḥ) - he; शपेत् (śapet) - should curse; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded one; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should slay; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by oneself; एवम् (evam) - thus; गुणम् (guṇam) - in quality; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala (proper noun); यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; कामयेत् (kāmayet) - would desire; शपितुम् (śapitum) - to curse; कले (kale) - Kali (proper noun);]
(Oneself he should curse, the deluded one, and should slay oneself by oneself. Thus in quality Nala who indeed would desire to curse Kali.)
Whoever, being deluded, desires to curse Nala in this way for his conduct, should curse himself and even destroy himself. (03-55-10)
कृच्छ्रे स नरके मज्जेदगाधे विपुलेऽप्लवे। एवमुक्त्वा कलिं देवा द्वापरं च дивं ययुः ॥०३-५५-११॥
kṛcchre sa narake majjedagādhe vipule'plave. evam uktvā kaliṁ devā dvāparaṁ ca divaṁ yayuḥ ॥03-55-11॥
[कृच्छ्रे (kṛcchre) - in a difficulty; स (sa) - that; नरके (narake) - in hell; मज्जेत् (majjet) - would sink; अगाधे (agādhe) - bottomless; विपुले (vipule) - vast; अप्लवे (aplave) - without raft; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; कलिं (kaliṁ) - Kali (the Kali age); देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; द्वापरम् (dvāparam) - Dvāpara (the Dvāpara age); च (ca) - and; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went;]
(In a difficulty that one would sink in hell, bottomless, vast, without raft. Thus having said, Kali, the gods, Dvāpara and, to heaven, they went.)
In such a difficult situation that one would sink into a vast, bottomless hell without a raft—having thus spoken about Kali, the gods and Dvāpara went back to heaven. (03-55-11)
ततो गतेषु देवेषु कलिर्द्वापरमब्रवीत्। संहर्तुं नोत्सहे कोपं नले वत्स्यामि द्वापर ॥०३-५५-१२॥
tato gateṣu deveṣu kalir dvāparam abravīt। saṃhartuṃ notsahe kopaṃ nale vatsyāmi dvāpara ॥03-55-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गतेषु (gateṣu) - after having departed; देवेषु (deveṣu) - the gods; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (the being named Kali); द्वापरम् (dvāparam) - to Dvāpara (another being); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; संहर्तुम् (saṃhartuṃ) - to destroy; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; नले (nale) - towards Nala; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I shall remain; द्वापर (dvāpara) - O Dvapara;]
(Then, after the gods had departed, Kali said to Dvapara: "I am not able to destroy anger toward Nala, O Dvapara; I shall remain (with him), O Dvapara." (03-55-12))
Then, after the gods had departed, Kali said to Dvapara: "I am not able to destroy my anger toward Nala, O Dvapara; I will remain (with him), O Dvapara." (03-55-12)
भ्रंशयिष्यामि तं राज्यान्न भैम्या सह रंस्यते। त्वमप्यक्षान्समाविश्य कर्तुं साहाय्यमर्हसि ॥०३-५५-१३॥
bhraṁśayiṣyāmi taṁ rājyānna bhaimyā saha raṁsyate। tvam apyakṣān samāviśya kartuṁ sāhāyyam arhasi॥03-55-13॥
[भ्रंशयिष्यामि (bhraṁśayiṣyāmi) - I shall cause to fall; तं (taṁ) - him; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from kingdom; न (na) - not; भैम्या (bhaimyā) - with the daughter of Bhīma (Damayanti); सह (saha) - with; रंस्यते (raṁsyate) - will enjoy; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अक्षान् (akṣān) - dice; समाविश्य (samāviśya) - having entered upon; कर्तुम् (kartuṁ) - to do; साहाय्यम् (sāhāyyam) - help; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(I shall cause him to fall from the kingdom; he will not enjoy with the daughter of Bhīma. You also, having entered upon the dice, are worthy to help do (this).)
I will make him lose his kingdom; he will not enjoy Damayanti's company. You too, by joining the dice game, should assist in this. (03-55-13)
