Bṛhadaśva said.
एवं स समयं कृत्वा द्वापरेण कलिः सह। आजगाम ततस्तत्र यत्र राजा स नैषधः ॥०३-५६-१॥
evaṃ sa samayaṃ kṛtvā dvāpareṇa kaliḥ saha। ājagāma tatastatra yatra rājā sa naiṣadhaḥ ॥03-56-1॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; समयं (samayaṃ) - agreed time; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; द्वापरेण (dvāpareṇa) - with Dvāpara; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; सह (saha) - together with; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; ततस् (tatas) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; स (sa) - he; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Naiṣadha (King Nala);]
(Thus he, having made the agreed time, with Dvāpara, Kali together came then there where king he Naiṣadha (King Nala).)
Thus, after agreeing upon the time with Dvāpara, Kali, together with him, went to the place where King Nala (Naiṣadha) was. (03-56-1)
स नित्यमन्तरप्रेक्षी निषधेष्ववसच्चिरम्। अथास्य द्वादशे वर्षे ददर्श कलिरन्तरम् ॥०३-५६-२॥
sa nityam antaraprekṣī niṣadheṣv avasac ciram। athāsya dvādaśe varṣe dadarśa kalir antaram॥03-56-2॥
[स (sa) - he; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अन्तरप्रेक्षी (antaraprekṣī) - one who looks inward; निषधेषु (niṣadheṣu) - in the Niṣadha (mountains); अवसत् (avasat) - dwelt; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - for him; द्वादशे (dvādaśe) - in the twelfth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (spirit of strife); अन्तरम् (antaram) - opportunity/interstice;]
(He always inward-looking dwelt in the Niṣadhas for a long time. Then, in the twelfth year for him, Kali saw an opportunity.)
He, who was always introspective, resided in the Niṣadha mountains for a long time. Then, in his twelfth year, Kali saw an opportunity. (03-56-2)
कृत्वा मूत्रमुपस्पृश्य सन्ध्यामास्ते स्म नैषधः। अकृत्वा पादयोः शौचं तत्रैनं कलिराविशत् ॥०३-५६-३॥
kṛtvā mūtram upaspṛśya sandhyām āste sma naiṣadhaḥ। akṛtvā pādayoḥ śaucaṃ tatra enaṃ kalir āviśat॥03-56-3॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मूत्रम् (mūtram) - urination; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having washed (hands etc.); सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - twilight worship; आस्ते (āste) - he sat/performed; स्म (sma) - indeed; formerly; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Nala; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not having done; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - of the feet; शौचम् (śaucaṃ) - purification; cleansing; तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (personification of sin); आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(Having urinated, having washed, Nala indeed performed twilight worship. Not having performed purification of the feet, there Kali entered him.)
After urinating, Nala washed and performed the twilight ritual; but since he did not cleanse his feet, there Kali entered him. (03-56-3)
स समाविश्य तु नलं समीपं पुष्करस्य ह। गत्वा पुष्करमाहेदमेहि दीव्य नलेन वै ॥०३-५६-४॥
sa samāviśya tu nalaṃ samīpaṃ puṣkarasya ha। gatvā puṣkaram āha idam ehi dīvya nalena vai॥03-56-4॥
[स (sa) - he; समाविश्य (samāviśya) - approaching; तु (tu) - but; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; पुष्करस्य (puṣkarasya) - of Puṣkara; ह (ha) - indeed; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - to Puṣkara; आह (āha) - he said; इदम् (idam) - this; एहि (ehi) - come; दीव्य (dīvya) - play (dice); नलेन (nalena) - with Nala; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He, having approached Nala's vicinity, indeed of Puṣkara, having gone to Puṣkara, said this: "Come, play with Nala, indeed.")
He, having come near Nala with Puṣkara, went to Puṣkara and said: "Come, play dice with Nala." (03-56-4)
अक्षद्यूते नलं जेता भवान्हि सहितो मया। निषधान्प्रतिपद्यस्व जित्वा राजन्नलं नृपम् ॥०३-५६-५॥
akṣadyūte nalaṃ jetā bhavān hi sahito mayā। niṣadhān pratipadyasva jitvā rājann alaṃ nṛpam ॥03-56-5॥
[अक्षद्यूते (akṣadyūte) - at the dice game; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; जेता (jetā) - victor; भवान् (bhavān) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; मया (mayā) - with me; निषधान् (niṣadhān) - the Niṣadha kingdom; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - take possession of; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अलम् (alam) - sufficiently; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king;]
(At the dice game Nala victor you indeed together with me, the Niṣadhas take possession of having conquered O king sufficiently the king.)
At the dice game, you will indeed be the victor over Nala together with me; having conquered him, O king, take possession of the Niṣadha kingdom—let that be enough for the king. (03-56-5)
एवमुक्तस्तु कलिना पुष्करो नलमभ्ययात्। कलिश्चैव वृषो भूत्वा गवां पुष्करमभ्ययात् ॥०३-५६-६॥
evam-uktas tu kalinā puṣkaro nalam abhyayāt। kaliś caiva vṛṣo bhūtvā gavāṃ puṣkaram abhyayāt॥03-56-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara (proper noun); नलम् (nalm) - Nala (proper noun; accusative); अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (proper noun); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वृषः (vṛṣaḥ) - bull; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara (proper noun; accusative); अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached;]
(Thus, addressed by Kali, Puṣkara approached Nala. And Kali, indeed, having become a bull of the cows, approached Puṣkara.)
Thus addressed by Kali, Puṣkara went to Nala. And Kali, becoming a bull among the cows, approached Puṣkara. (03-56-6)
आसाद्य तु नलं वीरं पुष्करः परवीरहा। दीव्यावेत्यब्रवीद्भ्राता वृषेणेति मुहुर्मुहुः ॥०३-५६-७॥
āsādya tu nalaṃ vīraṃ puṣkaraḥ paravīrahā। dīvyāvetyabravīdbhrātā vṛṣeṇeti muhurmuhuḥ॥03-56-7॥
[आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; तु (tu) - but; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; वीरम् (vīraṃ) - hero; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; दीव्य (dīvya) - let us play dice; आवेत्य (ā-vetya) - having invited; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भ्राता (bhrātā) - the brother; वृषेण (vṛṣeṇa) - with stake; इति (iti) - thus; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhur-muhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Having approached Nala, the hero, Puṣkara, the destroyer of enemy heroes, having invited (him) to play dice, said to his brother 'with stake', again and again, thus.)
But having approached the heroic Nala, Puṣkara, the destroyer of enemy heroes, repeatedly invited his brother with the words 'Let us play dice for stakes.' (03-56-7)
न चक्षमे ततो राजा समाह्वानं महामनाः। वैदर्भ्याः प्रेक्षमाणायाः पणकालममन्यत ॥०३-५६-८॥
na cakṣame tato rājā samāhvānaṃ mahāmanāḥ। vaidarbhyāḥ prekṣamāṇāyāḥ paṇakālam amanyata ॥03-56-8॥
[न (na) - not; चक्षमे (cakṣame) - endured; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; राजा (rājā) - the king; समाह्वानम् (samāhvānam) - summoning; महा-मनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - great-minded; वैदर्भ्याः (vaidarbhyāḥ) - of Vaidarbhi (Damayanti); प्रेक्षमाणायाः (prekṣamāṇāyāḥ) - while watching; पण-कालम् (paṇa-kālam) - time of the competition; अमन्यत (amanyata) - he thought; ॥०३-५६-८॥ (॥03-56-8॥) -;]
(Not endured thereafter the king summoning, great-minded, of Vaidarbhi while watching, the time of the competition he thought.)
The great-minded king did not endure afterwards the summoning; while he watched Vaidarbhi, he thought it was the time of the competition. (03-56-8)
हिरण्यस्य सुवर्णस्य यानयुग्यस्य वाससाम्। आविष्टः कलिना द्यूते जीयते स्म नलस्तदा ॥०३-५६-९॥
hiraṇyasya suvarṇasya yānayugyasya vāsasām। āviṣṭaḥ kalinā dyūte jīyate sma nalastadā॥03-56-9॥
[हिरण्यस्य (hiraṇyasya) - of gold; सुवर्णस्य (suvarṇasya) - of refined gold; यानयुग्यस्य (yānayugyasya) - of chariots and yokes; वाससाम् (vāsasām) - of garments; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - overpowered; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; जीयते (jīyate) - is defeated; स्म (sma) - indeed; नलस्तदा (nalastadā) - Nala then;]
(Of gold, of refined gold, of chariots and yokes, of garments, overpowered by Kali, in gambling, is defeated indeed Nala then.)
At that time, Nala, overpowered by Kali, lost in gambling all his gold, refined gold, chariots with yokes, and garments. (03-56-9)
तमक्षमदसंमत्तं सुहृदां न तु कश्चन। निवारणेऽभवच्छक्तो दीव्यमानमचेतसम् ॥०३-५६-१०॥
tam akṣa-mada-saṃmattaṃ suhṛdāṃ na tu kaścana। nivāraṇe 'bhavat śakto dīvyamānam acetasaṃ ॥03-56-10॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अक्षमदसंमत्तम् (akṣa-mada-saṃmattam) - intoxicated by the pride of dice; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; निवारणे (nivāraṇe) - to restrain; अभवच्छक्तः (abhavat śaktaḥ) - was able; दीव्यमानम् (dīvyamānam) - while playing dice; अचेतसम् (acetasaṃ) - unconscious;]
(Him, intoxicated by the pride of dice, of friends not but anyone to restrain was able, while playing dice, unconscious.)
None of his friends, however, was able to restrain him, intoxicated by the pride from dice, while he was heedless in play. (03-56-10)
ततः पौरजनः सर्वो मन्त्रिभिः सह भारत। राजानं द्रष्टुमागच्छन्निवारयितुमातुरम् ॥०३-५६-११॥
tataḥ paurajanaḥ sarvo mantribhih saha bhārata। rājānaṃ draṣṭum āgacchan nivārayitum āturam ॥03-56-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पौरजनः (paurajanaḥ) - the townspeople; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhih) - with the ministers; सह (saha) - together with; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; आगच्छन् (āgacchan) - coming; निवारयितुम् (nivārayitum) - to dissuade; आतुरम् (āturam) - eager;]
(Then all the townspeople, together with the ministers, O Bhārata, coming to see the king, eager to dissuade.)
Then all the townspeople, along with the ministers, O Bhārata, came eagerly to see the king and dissuade him. (03-56-11)
ततः सूत उपागम्य दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत्। एष पौरजनः सर्वो द्वारि तिष्ठति कार्यवान् ॥०३-५६-१२॥
tataḥ sūta upāgamya damayantyai nyavedayat। eṣa paurajanaḥ sarvo dvāri tiṣṭhati kāryavān॥03-56-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सूत (sūta) - the charioteer; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; दमयन्त्यै (damayantyai) - to Damayantī; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he informed; एष (eṣa) - this; पौरजनः (paurajanaḥ) - city-people; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stand; कार्यवान् (kāryavān) - on business;]
(Then the charioteer, having approached Damayantī, informed (her): "this all city-people stand at the door, on business." (03-56-12))
Then the charioteer approached Damayantī and informed her: "All these people of the city are standing at the door with some business." (03-56-12)
निवेद्यतां नैषधाय सर्वाः प्रकृतयः स्थिताः। अमृष्यमाणा व्यसनं राज्ञो धर्मार्थदर्शिनः ॥०३-५६-१३॥
nivedyatāṁ naiṣadhāya sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ sthitāḥ. amṛṣyamāṇā vyasanaṁ rājño dharmārthadarśinaḥ ॥03-56-13॥
[निवेद्यतां (nivedyatām) - let it be conveyed; (may it be) reported; नैषधाय (naiṣadhāya) - to the king of Niṣadha (Nala); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - ministers; officials; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - assembled; standing; अमृष्यमाणा (amṛṣyamāṇā) - not bearing; unable to tolerate; व्यसनं (vyasanam) - misfortune; calamity; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; धर्मार्थदर्शिनः (dharmārthadarśinaḥ) - perceiving righteousness and purpose; discerning duty and advantage;]
(Let it be conveyed to the king of Niṣadha by all ministers assembled, not bearing the calamity of the king, perceiving righteousness and purpose.)
Let all the assembled ministers, who see to righteousness and duty and cannot tolerate the king's misfortune, inform the king of Niṣadha. (03-56-13)
ततः सा बाष्पकलया वाचा दुःखेन कर्शिता। उवाच नैषधं भैमी शोकोपहतचेतना ॥०३-५६-१४॥
tataḥ sā bāṣpakalayā vācā duḥkhena karśitā। uvāca naiṣadhaṃ bhaimī śokopahatacetanā ॥03-56-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; बाष्पकलया (bāṣpa-kalayā) - with a voice filled with tears; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by suffering; कर्शिता (karśitā) - emaciated; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; नैषधं (naiṣadham) - to Nala; भैमी (bhaimī) - Damayantī (daughter of Bhīma); शोकोपहतचेतना (śokopahata-cetanā) - her mind overcome by grief;]
(Then she, with a voice filled with tears, with speech, emaciated by suffering, spoke to Nala, Damayantī, her mind overcome by grief.)
Then Damayantī, her mind overcome by grief, emaciated by suffering, spoke to Nala with a voice choked with tears. (03-56-14)
राजन्पौरजनो द्वारि त्वां दिदृक्षुरवस्थितः। मन्त्रिभिः सहितः सर्वै राजभक्तिपुरस्कृतः ॥ तं द्रष्टुमर्हसीत्येवं पुनः पुनरभाषत ॥०३-५६-१५॥
rājan paurajano dvāri tvāṃ didṛkṣur avasthitaḥ। mantribhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ rājabhakti-puraskṛtaḥ॥ taṃ draṣṭum arhasi ity evaṃ punaḥ punaḥ abhāṣata॥03-56-15॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O King; पौरजनः (paurajanaḥ) - the townsfolk; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the gate; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to see; अवस्थितः (avasthitaḥ) - is present; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; राजभक्तिपुरस्कृतः (rājabhakti-puraskṛtaḥ) - endowed with royal devotion; तं (taṃ) - him; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(O King, the townsfolk, at the gate, you, desiring to see, is present; with ministers, accompanied by all, endowed with royal devotion. Him to see you ought—thus, in this way, again and again, (he) spoke. (03-56-15))
O King, the townspeople, accompanied by all the ministers and devoted to the royal authority, are waiting at the gate, desiring to see you. Again and again, he spoke thus, saying, "You ought to see him." (03-56-15)
तां तथा रुचिरापाङ्गीं विलपन्तीं सुमध्यमाम्। आविष्टः कलिना राजा नाभ्यभाषत किञ्चन ॥०३-५६-१६॥
tāṃ tathā rucirāpāṅgīṃ vilapantīṃ sumadhyamām। āviṣṭaḥ kalinā rājā nābhyabhāṣata kiñcana ॥03-56-16॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her (accusative singular); तथा (tathā) - thus; similarly; रुचिरापाङ्गीं (rucirāpāṅgīṃ) - having beautiful eyes; (accusative singular feminine); विलपन्तीं (vilapantīṃ) - lamenting; weeping; सुमध्यमाम् (sumadhyamām) - of slender waist; (accusative singular feminine); आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - possessed; overcome; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali (the spirit of the Kali age); राजा (rājā) - the king; न (na) - not; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke; addressed; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(Her, thus, having beautiful eyes, lamenting, of slender waist, possessed by Kali, the king, not spoke anything.)
The king, possessed by Kali, did not say anything to her, who had beautiful eyes, a slender waist, and was weeping thus. (03-56-16)
ततस्ते मन्त्रिणः सर्वे ते चैव पुरवासिनः। नायमस्तीति दुःखार्ता व्रीडिता जग्मुरालयान् ॥०३-५६-१७॥
tataste mantriṇaḥ sarve te caiva puravāsinaḥ। nāyamastīti duḥkhārtā vrīḍitā jagmurālayān॥03-56-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरवासिनः (puravāsinaḥ) - city-dwellers; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtāḥ) - afflicted with grief; व्रीडिता (vrīḍitāḥ) - ashamed; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; आलयान् (ālayān) - to houses;]
(Then they ministers all they indeed city-dwellers, "not this is" thus, afflicted with grief, ashamed, went to houses.)
Then all the ministers and the city-dwellers, saying "This one is no more," afflicted with grief and shame, went to their homes. (03-56-17)
तथा तदभवद्द्यूतं पुष्करस्य नलस्य च। युधिष्ठिर बहून्मासान्पुण्यश्लोकस्त्वजीयत ॥०३-५६-१८॥
tathā tad abhavad dyūtaṃ puṣkarasya nalasya ca। yudhiṣṭhira bahūn māsān puṇyaślokas tv ajīyata ॥03-56-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तद् (tad) - that; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; द्यूतम् (dyūtaṃ) - dice-game; पुष्करस्य (puṣkarasya) - of Puṣkara; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; बहून् (bahūn) - many; मासान् (māsān) - months; पुण्यश्लोकः (puṇyaślokaḥ) - the virtuous one; त्व् (tv) - indeed; अजीयत (ajīyata) - was defeated;]
(Thus, that dice-game of Puṣkara and Nala became; Yudhiṣṭhira, for many months, the virtuous one, indeed, was defeated.)
Thus, that dice-game between Puṣkara and Nala took place; Yudhiṣṭhira, the virtuous one, was also defeated for many months. (03-56-18)
