tasmin-kṛtāstre rathināṃ pradhāne; pratyāgate bhavanād vṛtrahantuḥ। ataḥ paraṃ kim akurvanta pārthāḥ; sametya śūreṇa dhanañjayena॥03-173-1॥

[वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; तेष्व् एव (teṣv eva) - in those indeed; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; नरेन्द्राः (narendrāḥ) - kings; सह्-अर्जुनेन (sah-arjunena) - with Arjuna; इन्द्र-समेन (indra-samena) - equal to Indra; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; तस्मिन् च (tasmin ca) - and in that; शैल-प्रवरे (śaila-pravare) - excellent mountain; सुरम्ये (suramye) - pleasant; धन-ईश्वर-आक्रीड-गताः (dhana-īśvara-ākrīḍa-gatāḥ) - engaged in the sports of Kubera (lord of wealth); विजह्रुः (vijahruḥ) - they enjoyed themselves;]
(In the forests, in those indeed, but they kings, with Arjuna equal to Indra, heroes, and in that excellent, pleasant mountain, engaged in the sports of Kubera, they enjoyed themselves.)
But those kings, heroes equal to Indra, together with Arjuna, enjoyed themselves in those very forests and upon that delightful, foremost mountain, engaging in the pastimes of Kubera. (03-173-2)
वेश्मानि तान्यप्रतिमानि पश्य; न्क्रीडाश्च नानाद्रुमसंनिकर्षाः। चचार धन्वी बहुधा नरेन्द्रः; सोऽस्त्रेषु यत्तः सततं किरीटी ॥०३-१७३-३॥

[वेश्मानि (veśmāni) - mansions; तानि (tāni) - those; अप्रतिमानि (apratimāni) - unrivalled; पश्य (paśya) - behold; क्रीडाः (krīḍāḥ) - sports; च (ca) - and; नानाद्रुम (nānādruma) - varied trees; सन्निकर्षाः (saṃnikarṣāḥ) - adjacent; चचार (cacāra) - wandered; धन्वी (dhanvī) - the archer; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - the king; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्त्रेषु (astreṣu) - in weapons; यत्तः (yattaḥ) - devoted; सततं (satataṃ) - always; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the crowned one;]

अवाप्य वासं नरदेवपुत्राः; प्रसादजं वैश्रवणस्य राज्ञः। न प्राणिनां ते स्पृहयन्ति राज; ञ्शिवश्च कालः स बभूव तेषाम् ॥०३-१७३-४॥
avāpya vāsaṃ naradevaputrāḥ; prasādajaṃ vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ। na prāṇināṃ te spṛhayanti rājan; śivaś ca kālaḥ sa babhūva teṣām ॥03-173-4॥

[समेत्य (sametya) - having gathered; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; यथा (yathā) - as; एकरात्र (ekarātra) - one night; मूषुः (mūṣuḥ) - passed; समाः (samāḥ) - years; तत्र (tatra) - there; तदा (tadā) - then; चतस्रः (catasraḥ) - four; पूर्वाः (pūrvāḥ) - previous; च (ca) - and; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; ता दश (tā daśa) - these ten; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; वसताम् (vasatām) - dwelling; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests;]
(Having gathered by Pārtha as one night, the four years then passed there. The previous six, these ten of the Pāṇḍavas, became auspicious for those dwelling in the forests.)
It seemed to Pārtha that the four years spent there passed like one night. Previously, six years—these ten years of the Pāṇḍavas—became auspicious for them as they dwelled in the forests. (03-173-5)
ततोऽब्रवीद्वायुसुतस्तरस्वी; जिष्णुश्च राजानमुपोपविश्य। यमौ च वीरौ सुरराजकल्पा; वेकान्तमास्थाय हितं प्रियं च ॥०३-१७३-६॥
tato'bravīd vāyu-sutas tarasvī; jiṣṇuś ca rājānam upopaviśya. yamau ca vīrau sura-rāja-kalpā; ekāntam āsthāya hitaṃ priyaṃ ca ॥03-173-6॥

(Then the mighty son of Vāyu, having approached and seated (near) the king, the conqueror, and the two heroes, sons of Yama, comparable to the king of gods, having resorted to solitude, (spoke) what is beneficial and dear.)
Then the mighty son of Vāyu, having come near and seated himself by the king, along with the two heroic sons of Yama—heroes as splendid as the lord of the gods—having taken themselves aside in solitude, spoke what was both beneficial and dear. (03-173-6)
तव प्रतिज्ञां कुरुराज सत्यां; चिकीर्षमाणास्त्वदनु प्रियं च। ततोऽनुगच्छाम वनान्यपास्य; सुयोधनं सानुचरं निहन्तुम् ॥०३-१७३-७॥
tava pratijñāṃ kururāja satyāṃ; cikīrṣamāṇās tvad-anu priyaṃ ca. tato 'nugacchāma vanāny apāsya; suyodhanaṃ sānucaraṃ nihan-tum ॥03-173-7॥
[तव (tava) - your; प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñām) - vow; कुरुराज (kururāja) - Kuru king; सत्यां (satyām) - true; चिकीर्षमाणाः (cikīrṣamāṇāḥ) - desiring to accomplish; त्वदनु (tvad-anu) - after you; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - pleasing; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अनुगच्छाम (anugacchāma) - we follow; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; अपास्य (apāsya) - abandoning; सुयोधनं (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana; सानुचरं (sānucaram) - with his followers; निहन्तुम् (nihantum) - to slay;]
(Your vow, Kuru king, (is) true; desiring to accomplish (it, we), after you, (do) what is pleasing and (so) then we follow, abandoning the forests, Suyodhana with his followers to slay.)
Your vow, Kuru king, is true; desiring to fulfill it, we, following you and in what is pleasing to you, therefore abandon the forests to go to slay Suyodhana along with his followers. (3-173-7)
एकादशं वर्षमिदं वसामः; सुयोधनेनात्तसुखाः सुखार्हाः। तं वञ्चयित्वाधमबुद्धिशील; मज्ञातवासं सुखमाप्नुयामः ॥०३-१७३-८॥
ekādaśaṃ varṣam idaṃ vasāmaḥ; suyodhanenātta-sukhāḥ sukhārhāḥ. taṃ vañcayitvā adhama-buddhi-śīla; ajñāta-vāsaṃ sukham āpnuyāmaḥ ॥03-173-8॥
[एकादशम् (ekādaśam) - eleventh; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; इदम् (idam) - this; वसामः (vasāmaḥ) - we dwell; सुयोधनेन (suyodhanena) - by Suyodhana; आत्तसुखाः (ātta-sukhāḥ) - having enjoyment taken away; सुखार्हाः (sukhārhāḥ) - worthy of happiness; तम् (tam) - him; वञ्चयित्वा (vañcayitvā) - having deceived; अधमबुद्धिशील (adhama-buddhi-śīla) - having low-minded conduct; अज्ञातवासम् (ajñāta-vāsam) - incognito stay; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आप्नुयामः (āpnuyāmaḥ) - may we obtain;]
(This eleventh year we dwell; by Suyodhana, having our happiness taken away, though worthy of happiness. Him, having deceived, of low-minded conduct; incognito stay, happiness may we obtain.)
We are passing this eleventh year here; deprived of our due happiness by Suyodhana, though we deserve happiness. May we, having deceived that wickedly minded one, obtain happiness through living incognito. (3-173-8)
तवाज्ञया पार्थिव निर्विशङ्का; विहाय मानं विचरन्वनानि। समीपवासेन विलोभितास्ते; ज्ञास्यन्ति नास्मानपकृष्टदेशान् ॥०३-१७३-९॥
tavājñayā pārthiva nirviśaṅkā; vihāya mānaṃ vicaran vanāni. samīpavāsena vilobhitās te; jñāsyanti nāsmānapakṛṣṭadeśān ॥03-173-9॥
[तवाज्ञया (tavājñayā) - by your command; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; निर्विशङ्का (nirviśaṅkā) - without doubt; विहाय (vihāya) - abandoning; मानं (mānam) - pride; विचरन् (vicaran) - wandering; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; समीपवासेन (samīpavāsena) - by close residence; विलोभिताः (vilobhitāḥ) - enticed; ते (te) - they; ज्ञास्यन्ति (jñāsyanti) - will know; न (na) - not; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अपकृष्टदेशान् (apakṛṣṭadeśān) - to distant lands;]
(By your command, O king, without doubt, abandoning pride, (one) wandering the forests; by close residence enticed, they will not know us in distant lands.)
O king, by your command, without hesitation, we abandon pride and wander the forests; those who are enticed by living nearby will not recognize us when we are in distant lands. (3-173-9)
संवत्सरं तं तु विहृत्य गूढं; नराधमं तं सुखमुद्धरेम। निर्यात्य वैरं सफलं सपुष्पं; तस्मै नरेन्द्राधमपूरुषाय ॥०३-१७३-१०॥
saṃvatsaraṃ taṃ tu vihṛtya gūḍhaṃ; narādhamam taṃ sukham uddharema. niryātya vairaṃ saphalaṃ sapuṣpaṃ; tasmai narendrādhamapūruṣāya ॥03-173-10॥
[संवत्सरं (saṃvatsaram) - one year; तं (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having passed; गूढं (gūḍham) - in secret; नराधमं (narādhamam) - lowest of men; तं (tam) - him; सुखम् (sukham) - joyfully; उद्धरेम (uddharema) - let us kill (remove); निर्यात्य (niryātya) - having discharged; वैरं (vairaṃ) - enmity; सफलं (saphalam) - fruitful; सपुष्पं (sapuṣpam) - and blossoming; तस्मै (tasmai) - to that; नरेन्द्राधमपूरुषाय (narendrādhamapūruṣāya) - to the vile man, the worst among kings;]
(One year him but having passed in secret, the lowest of men him joyfully let us kill. Having discharged enmity fruitful and blossoming to that vile man, the worst among kings.)
Let us, after secretly spending a year, joyfully kill that worst of men. Having thus fulfilled and completed our enmity towards that vile man, that lowest among kings. (03-173-10)
सुयोधनायानुचरैर्वृताय; ततो महीमाहर धर्मराज। स्वर्गोपमं शैलमिमं चरद्भिः; शक्यो विहन्तुं नरदेव शोकः ॥०३-१७३-११॥
suyodhanāyānucarairvṛtāya; tato mahīmāhara dharmarāja. svargopamaṃ śailamimaṃ caradbhiḥ; śakyo vihantuṃ naradeva śokaḥ ॥03-173-11॥
[सुयोधनाय (suyodhanāya) - for Suyodhana; अनुचरैः (anucaraiḥ) - by followers; वृताय (vṛtāya) - being surrounded; ततः (tataḥ) - then; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; आहर (āhara) - take; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - O Dharmarāja; स्वर्गोपमम् (svargopamam) - like heaven; शैलम् (śailam) - mountain; इमम् (imam) - this; चरद्भिः (caradbhiḥ) - by those moving; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; विहन्तुम् (vihantum) - to destroy; नरदेव (naradeva) - O king; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief;]
(For Suyodhana, by followers being surrounded; then the earth take, O Dharmarāja. Like heaven mountain this by those moving; possible to destroy, O king, grief.)
Surrounded by the followers of Suyodhana, then take the earth, O Dharmarāja. This mountain, like heaven, being traversed by wandering men, O king, grief can be conquered. (03-173-11)
कीर्तिश्च ते भारत पुण्यगन्धा; नश्येत लोकेषु चराचरेषु। तत्प्राप्य राज्यं कुरुपुङ्गवानां; शक्यं महत्प्राप्तमथ क्रियाश्च ॥०३-१७३-१२॥
kīrtiś ca te bhārata puṇyagandhā; naśyet lokeṣu carācareṣu। tatprāpya rājyaṃ kurupuṅgavānāṃ; śakyaṃ mahatprāptam atha kriyāś ca ॥03-173-12॥
[कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पुण्यगन्धा (puṇyagandhā) - having auspicious fragrance; नश्येत् (naśyet) - would perish; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among worlds; चराचरेषु (carācareṣu) - among moving and unmoving beings; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् (kurupuṅgavānām) - of the foremost among Kurus; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; महत् (mahat) - great; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - attained; अथ (atha) - then; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - deeds; च (ca) - and;]
(Fame and your, O Bhārata, having auspicious fragrance, would perish among the worlds, among moving and unmoving beings. Having attained that kingdom of the foremost of the Kurus, possible, great attained then deeds and.)
O Bhārata, your fame, possessing auspicious fragrance, would perish among all beings in the worlds, both moving and unmoving. Therefore, having attained the kingdom of the foremost among the Kurus, great deeds then are possible. (03-173-12)
इदं तु शक्यं सततं नरेन्द्र; प्राप्तुं त्वया यल्लभसे कुबेरात्। कुरुष्व बुद्धिं द्विषतां वधाय; कृतागसां भारत निग्रहे च ॥०३-१७३-१३॥
idaṃ tu śakyaṃ satataṃ narendra; prāptuṃ tvayā yallabhase kuberāt। kuruṣva buddhiṃ dviṣatāṃ vadhāya; kṛtāgasāṃ bhārata nigrahe ca ॥03-173-13॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; सततं (satataṃ) - always; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; प्राप्तुं (prāptuṃ) - to obtain; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; यत् (yat) - which; लभसे (labhase) - you obtain; कुबेरात् (kuberāt) - from Kubera; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - make; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intention; द्विषतां (dviṣatāṃ) - of enemies; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the destruction; कृतागसां (kṛtāgasāṃ) - of those who have committed offences; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; निग्रहे (nigrahe) - for the restraint; च (ca) - and; ॥०३-१७३-१३॥ (॥03-173-13॥) -;]
(This, but, is possible always, O king; to obtain by you which you obtain from Kubera. Make intention for the destruction of enemies, for the restraint of those who have committed offences, O descendant of Bharata, and.)
O king, this is always possible for you—to obtain that which you have gotten from Kubera. Make up your mind for destroying your enemies and for restraining those who have committed offences, O descendant of Bharata. (03-173-13)
तेजस्तवोग्रं न सहेत राज; न्समेत्य साक्षादपि वज्रपाणिः। न हि व्यथां जातु करिष्यतस्तौ; समेत्य देवैरपि धर्मराज ॥०३-१७३-१४॥
tejas tavo ugraṁ na saheta rājan; na sametya sākṣād api vajrapāṇiḥ। na hi vyathāṁ jātu kariṣyataḥ tau; sametya devair api dharmarāja ॥03-173-14॥
[तेजस् (tejas) - splendor; तव (tava) - of you; उग्रम् (ugram) - fierce; न (na) - not; सहेत (saheta) - could withstand; राजन् (rājan) - O king; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; अपि (api) - even; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Vajrapāṇi (Indra); न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; व्यथाम् (vyathām) - distress; जातु (jātu) - ever; करिष्यतः (kariṣyataḥ) - would cause; तौ (tau) - those two; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja (Yama);]
(Splendor yours fierce not could withstand O king; having approached directly even Indra; not indeed distress ever would cause those two; having approached by the gods even Dharmarāja (Yama). (03-173-14))
O king, even Indra himself, if directly confronted, could not withstand your fierce energy; nor would those two (warriors), even if faced by all the gods and Dharmarāja (Yama), ever cause distress. (03-173-14)
त्वदर्थसिद्ध्यर्थमभिप्रवृत्तौ; सुपर्णकेतुश्च शिनेश्च नप्ता। यथैव कृष्णोऽप्रतिमो बलेन; तथैव राजन्स शिनिप्रवीरः ॥०३-१७३-१५॥
tvad-artha-siddhy-artham-abhipravṛttau; suparṇa-ketuś ca shineś ca naptā. yathaiva kṛṣṇo'pratimo balena; tathaiva rājans śini-pravīraḥ ॥03-173-15॥
[त्वदर्थसिद्ध्यर्थम् (tvad-artha-siddhi-artham) - for the purpose of accomplishing your objective; अभिप्रवृत्तौ (abhipravṛttau) - engaged in; commenced; सुपर्णकेतुः (suparṇa-ketuḥ) - Suparṇa-ketu (proper noun); च (ca) - and; शिनेः (shineḥ) - of Śini (proper noun); च (ca) - and; नप्ता (naptā) - grandson; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; exactly; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa (proper noun); अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - without equal; बलेन (balena) - in strength; by strength; तथा (tathā) - so; in like manner; एव (eva) - indeed; exactly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स (sa) - he; शिनिप्रवीरः (śini-pravīraḥ) - Śini-pravīra (proper noun, the mighty descendant of Śini);]
(For the purpose of accomplishing your objective, engaged are Suparṇa-ketu and the grandson of Śini. Just as indeed Kṛṣṇa is without equal in strength, so indeed, O king, is he, the mighty descendant of Śini.)
For attaining your objective, both Suparṇa-ketu and the grandson of Śini are engaged. Just as Kṛṣṇa is unparalleled in strength, so too, O king, is that heroic descendant of Śini. (03-173-15)
तवार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमभिप्रवृत्तौ; यथैव कृष्णः सह यादवैस्तैः। तथैव चावां नरदेववर्य; यमौ च वीरौ कृतिनौ प्रयोगे ॥ त्वदर्थयोगप्रभवप्रधानाः; समं करिष्याम परान्समेत्य ॥०३-१७३-१६॥
tavārthasiddhyartham abhipravṛttau; yathaiva kṛṣṇaḥ saha yādavaistaiḥ। tathaiva cāvāṃ naradevavarya; yamau ca vīrau kṛtinau prayoge॥ tvadarthayogaprabhavapradhānāḥ; samaṃ kariṣyāma parān sametya॥03-173-16॥
[तवार्थसिद्ध्यर्थम् (tavārthasiddhyartham) - for the purpose of accomplishing your objective; अभिप्रवृत्तौ (abhipravṛttau) - engaged; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; सह (saha) - along with; यादवैः (yādavaiḥ) - with the Yādavas; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; आवाम् (āvām) - we two; नरदेववर्य (naradevavarya) - O best among kings; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama; च (ca) - and; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; कृतिनौ (kṛtinau) - capable; प्रयोगे (prayoge) - in action; त्वदर्थयोग (tvadarthayoga) - combination for your sake; प्रभव (prabhava) - originating from; प्रधानाः (pradhānāḥ) - chief ones; समम् (samam) - together; करिष्याम (kariṣyāma) - we shall do; परान् (parān) - others; समेत्य (sametya) - gathering (together);]
(For the purpose of accomplishing your objective, engaged—just as indeed Kṛṣṇa along with the Yādavas with them, so in the same way, O best among kings, we two, the sons of Yama, and heroes, capable in action, originating as chief ones in the combination for your sake, together shall do to others, gathering (together). (03-173-16))
For the accomplishment of your purpose, we are engaged—just as Kṛṣṇa was with the Yādavas, so also, O best of kings, we two sons of Yama, heroic and capable in action, originating as chief ones for your sake, will together oppose the others after assembling. (03-173-16)
ततस्तदाज्ञाय मतं महात्मा; तेषां स धर्मस्य सुतो वरिष्ठः। प्रदक्षिणं वैश्रवणाधिवासं; चकार धर्मार्थविदुत्तमौजः ॥०३-१७३-१७॥
tatas tad ājñāya mataṃ mahātmā; teṣāṃ sa dharmasya suto variṣṭhaḥ। pradakṣiṇaṃ vaiśravaṇādhivāsaṃ; cakāra dharmārthavid uttamaujaḥ॥03-173-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; मतं (mataṃ) - opinion; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the most distinguished; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; वैश्रवणाधिवासं (vaiśravaṇādhivāsam) - the abode of Vaiśravaṇa; चकार (cakāra) - he performed; धर्मार्थविद् (dharmārthavid) - knower of dharma and artha; उत्तम-ओजः (uttama-ojaḥ) - of great vigor;]
(Then, having understood that opinion, the great-souled one, the most distinguished son of Dharma among them, performed the circumambulation of the abode of Vaiśravaṇa, (he who is) a knower of dharma and artha, of supreme energy.)
Then, having understood their opinion, the great-souled and most eminent son of Dharma, a knower of dharma and artha endowed with great vigor, performed the circumambulation of Vaiśravaṇa's abode. (03-173-17)
आमन्त्र्य वेश्मानि नदीः सरांसि; सर्वाणि रक्षांसि च धर्मराजः। यथागतं मार्गमवेक्षमाणः; पुनर्गिरिं चैव निरीक्षमाणः ॥०३-१७३-१८॥
āmantrya veśmāni nadīḥ sarāṃsi; sarvāṇi rakṣāṃsi ca dharmarājaḥ. yathāgataṃ mārgam avekṣamāṇaḥ; punar giriṃ caiva nirīkṣamāṇaḥ ॥03-173-18॥
[आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; वेश्मानि (veśmāni) - mansions; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - rakṣasas (demons); च (ca) - and; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira); यथा (yathā) - as; आगतं (āgatam) - he had come; मार्गम् (mārgam) - the path; अवेक्षमाणः (avekṣamāṇaḥ) - observing; पुनः (punar) - again; गिरिं (giriṃ) - mountain; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निरीक्षमाणः (nirīkṣamāṇaḥ) - looking at;]
(Having addressed the mansions, rivers, lakes, and all the rakṣasas, and the king of dharma, observing the path as he had come, again indeed looking at the mountain.)
After taking leave of the mansions, rivers, lakes, and all the rakṣasas, king Yudhiṣṭhira, while looking back on the way he had come and once again gazing at the mountain, continued onward. (03-173-18)
समाप्तकर्मा सहितः सुहृद्भि; र्जित्वा सपत्नान्प्रतिलभ्य राज्यम्। शैलेन्द्र भूयस्तपसे धृतात्मा; द्रष्टा तवास्मीति मतिं चकार ॥०३-१७३-१९॥
samāptakarmā sahitaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ jitvā sapatnān pratilabhya rājyam। śailendra bhūyas tapase dhṛtātmā draṣṭā tav āsmi iti matiṁ cakāra॥03-173-19॥
[समाप्तकर्मा (samāptakarmā) - whose actions are complete; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - with friends; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; सपत्नान् (sapatnān) - rivals; प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having obtained; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; शैलेन्द्र (śailendra) - O king of mountains; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; तपसे (tapase) - for penance; धृतात्मा (dhṛtātmā) - with steady mind; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - seer; तव (tava) - your; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; मतिं (matiṁ) - intention; चकार (cakāra) - made; ॥०३-१७३-१९॥ (॥03-173-19॥) - ;]
(Having completed his actions, together with friends, having conquered rivals and having obtained the kingdom, O king of mountains, again for penance, with steady mind, 'I am your seer'—thus the intention he made.)
Having completed his tasks, together with his friends, conquering his rivals and regaining the kingdom, O king of mountains, he resolved with firm mind to perform penance again, thinking, 'I am your seer.' (03-173-19)
वृतः स सर्वैरनुजैर्द्विजैश्च; तेनैव मार्गेण पतिः कुरूणाम्। उवाह चैनान्सगणांस्तथैव; घटोत्कचः पर्वतनिर्झरेषु ॥०३-१७३-२०॥
vṛtaḥ sa sarvair anujair dvijaiś ca; tenaiva mārgeṇa patiḥ kurūṇām। uvāha ca enān saghaṇāṁs tathaiva; ghaṭotkacaḥ parvata-nirjhareṣu ॥03-173-20॥
[वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;, स (sa) - he;, सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all;, अनुजैः (anujaiḥ) - by younger brothers;, द्विजैश्च (dvijaiś ca) - and by twice-born (Brahmins);, तेनैव (tena eva) - by that very (route);, मार्गेण (mārgeṇa) - by the path;, पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;, कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus;, उवाह (uvāha) - carried;, च (ca) - and;, एनान् (enān) - these;, सगणान् (sagaṇān) - with their retinues;, तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner;, घटोत्कचः (ghaṭotkacaḥ) - Ghaṭotkaca;, पर्वतनिर्झरेषु (parvata-nirjhareṣu) - in the mountain streams;,;]
(Surrounded, he, by all (his) younger brothers and by the twice-born; by that same path, the lord of the Kurus carried (them) and also these with their retinues in the same manner; Ghaṭotkaca (carried them) in the mountain streams.)
He, surrounded by all his younger brothers and Brahmins, the lord of the Kurus, proceeded by that very path, and Ghaṭotkaca in the same manner carried them and their retinues through the mountain streams. (03-173-20)
तान्प्रस्थितान्प्रीतिमना महर्षिः; पितेव पुत्राननुशिष्य सर्वान्। स लोमशः प्रीतमना जगाम; दिवौकसां पुण्यतमं निवासम् ॥०३-१७३-२१॥
tān prasthitān prītimanā maharṣiḥ; pitā iva putrān anuśiṣya sarvān। sa lomaśaḥ prītimanā jagāma; divaukasāṃ puṇyatamaṃ nivāsam ॥03-173-21॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रस्थितान् (prasthitān) - departed; set forth; प्रीतिमना (prītimanā) - with a pleased mind; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; पितेव (pitā iva) - like a father; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अनुशिष्य (anuśiṣya) - after instructing; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; स (sa) - he; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; प्रीतिमना (prītimanā) - with a pleased mind; जगाम (jagāma) - went; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the celestial beings; पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamam) - most meritorious; most sacred; निवासम् (nivāsam) - abode;]
(Them, departed, with a pleased mind, the great sage; like a father, sons, after instructing, all. He, Lomaśa, with a pleased mind, went; of the celestial beings, to the most sacred abode.)
Seeing them depart, the great sage, his mind pleased, instructed them all like a father instructs his sons. Then Lomaśa, pleased of mind, went to the most sacred abode of the gods. (03-173-21)
तेनानुशिष्टार्ष्टिषेणेन चैव; तीर्थानि रम्याणि तपोवनानि। महान्ति चान्यानि सरांसि पार्थाः; सम्पश्यमानाः प्रययुर्नराग्र्याः ॥०३-१७३-२२॥
tenānuśiṣṭārṣṭiṣeṇena caiva; tīrthāni ramyāṇi tapovanāni. mahānti cānyāni sarāṁsi pārthāḥ; sampaśyamānāḥ prayayurnarāgryāḥ ॥03-173-22॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; अनुशिष्टाः (anuśiṣṭāḥ) - instructed; ऋष्टिषेणेन (ṛṣṭiṣeṇena) - by Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - beautiful; तपोवनानि (tapovanāni) - ascetic groves; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; च (ca) - and; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; सरांसि (sarāṁsi) - lakes; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; सम्पश्यमानाः (sampaśyamānāḥ) - beholding; प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - went; नराग्र्याः (narāgryāḥ) - the foremost of men;]
(By him instructed, by Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa indeed; holy places, beautiful ascetic groves. Great and other lakes, the sons of Pṛthā, beholding, went, the foremost of men.)
Thus instructed by Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa, the sons of Pṛthā—foremost among men—beholding the beautiful holy places, ascetic groves, and the great and other lakes, proceeded on their way. (03-173-22)
