नगोत्तमं प्रस्रवणैरुपेतं; दिशां गजैः किंनरपक्षिभिश्च। सुखं निवासं जहतां हि तेषां; न प्रीतिरासीद्भरतर्षभाणाम् ॥०३-१७४-१॥
nagottamaṁ prasravaṇair upetaṁ; diśāṁ gajaiḥ kiṁnara-pakṣibhiś ca। sukhaṁ nivāsaṁ jahatāṁ hi teṣāṁ; na prītir āsīd bharatarṣabhāṇām ॥03-174-1॥
[नगोत्तमं (nagottamam) - excellent mountain; प्रस्रवणैः (prasravaṇaiḥ) - with streams; उपेतं (upetam) - accompanied by; दिशां (diśām) - of the quarters (directions); गजैः (gajaiḥ) - with elephants; किंनरपक्षिभिः (kiṁnara-pakṣibhiḥ) - with Kinnara birds; च (ca) - and; सुखं (sukham) - pleasant; निवासं (nivāsam) - residence; जहतां (jahatām) - departing; हि (hi) - indeed; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; न (na) - not; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - joy; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; भरतर्षभाणाम् (bharatarṣabhāṇām) - of the most illustrious among the Bharatas;]
(Excellent mountain with streams accompanied, of the quarters with elephants, with Kinnara birds and. Pleasant residence departing, indeed, of them, not joy was, of the most illustrious among the Bharatas.)
Although they were leaving an excellent mountain adorned with streams, filled with elephants of the quarters and Kinnara birds, those foremost among the Bharatas did not feel joy in departing from their pleasant abode. (03-174-1)
ततस्तु तेषां पुनरेव हर्षः; कैलासमालोक्य महान्बभूव। कुबेरकान्तं भरतर्षभाणां; महीधरं वारिधरप्रकाशम् ॥०३-१७४-२॥
tatastu teṣāṃ punareva harṣaḥ; kailāsamālokya mahānbabhūva. kuberakāntaṃ bharatarṣabhāṇāṃ; mahīdharaṃ vāridharaprakāśam ॥03-174-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - indeed; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - certainly; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; कैलासम् (kailāsam) - Kailāsa; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; महान् (mahān) - great; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; कुबेरकान्तम् (kuberakāntam) - beloved of Kubera; भरतर्षभाणाम् (bharatarṣabhāṇām) - of the bulls among the Bharatas; महीधरम् (mahīdharam) - mountain; वारिधरप्रकाशम् (vāridharaprakāśam) - shining like a cloud-bearer;]
(Then indeed, for them, again certainly, joy; having seen Kailāsa, great arose. Beloved of Kubera, for the bulls among the Bharatas; the mountain, shining like a cloud-bearer.)
Then indeed, for them, great joy arose again upon seeing Kailāsa. For the foremost of the Bharatas, the mountain beloved of Kubera shone like a carrier of clouds. (03-174-2)
समुच्छ्रयान्पर्वतसंनिरोधा; न्गोष्ठान्गिरीणां गिरिसेतुमालाः। बहून्प्रपातांश्च समीक्ष्य वीराः; स्थलानि निम्नानि च तत्र तत्र ॥०३-१७४-३॥
samucchrayān parvata-saṃnirodhāṅ goṣṭhān girīṇāṃ girisetu-mālāḥ। bahūn prapātāṃś ca samīkṣya vīrāḥ; sthalāni nimnāni ca tatra tatra॥03-174-3॥
[समुच्छ्रयान् (samucchrayān) - elevations; पर्वतसंनिरोधान् (parvata-saṃnirodhān) - mountain-enclosures; गोष्ठान् (goṣṭhān) - enclosures; गिरीणाम् (girīṇām) - of mountains; गिरिसेतुमालाः (girisetu-mālāḥ) - chains of mountain-bridges; बहून् (bahūn) - many; प्रपातान् (prapātān) - precipices; च (ca) - and; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; स्थलानि (sthalāni) - ground-places; निम्नानि (nimnāni) - low-lying; च (ca) - and; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there;]
(Elevations, mountain-enclosures, enclosures of mountains, chains of mountain-bridges, many precipices also, having observed, the heroes (saw) ground-places low-lying and here and there.)
The heroes, observing elevations, mountain enclosures, cow-pens of the mountains, chains of mountain ridges, and many precipices, as well as low-lying tracts of land here and there, (proceeded on their way). (03-174-3)
तथैव चान्यानि महावनानि; मृगद्विजानेकपसेवितानि। आलोकयन्तोऽभिययुः प्रतीता; स्ते धन्विनः खड्गधरा नराग्र्याः ॥०३-१७४-४॥
tathaiva cānyāni mahāvanāni; mṛgadvijānekapasevitāni. ālokayanto’bhiyayuḥ pratītāḥ; ste dhanvinaḥ khaḍgadharā narāgryāḥ ॥03-174-4॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; महावनानि (mahāvanāni) - great forests; मृगद्विज- (mṛgadvija-) - beasts and birds; अनेकप- (anekapa-) - by many protectors; सेवितानि (sevitāni) - inhabited; आलोकयन्तः (ālokayantaḥ) - looking upon; अभिययुः (abhiyayuḥ) - approached; प्रतीताः (pratītāḥ) - confident; स्ते (ste) - they; धन्विनः (dhanvinaḥ) - archers; खड्गधराः (khaḍgadharāḥ) - sword-bearers; नराग्र्याः (narāgryāḥ) - excellent men;]
(Likewise and other great forests, beasts and birds by many protectors inhabited, looking upon, approached, confident, they, archers, sword-bearers, excellent men.)
In the same way, the outstanding warriors, who were archers and sword-bearers, confidently proceeded, surveying other great forests inhabited by many kinds of beasts and birds. (03-174-4)
वनानि रम्याणि सरांसि नद्यो; गुहा गिरीणां गिरिगह्वराणि। एते निवासाः सततं बभूवुः निशानिशं प्राप्य नरर्षभाणाम्॥०३-१७४-५॥
vanāni ramyāṇi sarāṃsi nadyo; guhā girīṇāṃ girigahvarāṇi। ete nivāsāḥ satataṃ babhūvuḥ niśāniśaṃ prāpya nararṣabhāṇām॥03-174-5॥
[वनानि (vanāni) - forests; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - pleasant; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; नद्यो (nadyo) - rivers; गुहा (guhā) - caves; गिरीणां (girīṇāṃ) - of mountains; गिरिगह्वराणि (girigahvarāṇi) - mountain caves; एते (ete) - these; निवासाः (nivāsāḥ) - dwellings; सततं (satataṃ) - always; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - were (became); निशानिशं (niśāniśaṃ) - night and night; (every night; continuously;) प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; having obtained; नरर्षभाणाम् (nararṣabhāṇām) - of the best among men;]
(Forests, pleasant, lakes, rivers; caves of mountains, mountain caves; these dwellings always were, night and night, having obtained, of the best among men.)
Pleasant forests, lakes, rivers, mountain caves, and grottoes—these always became the dwellings, night after night, of the best among men. (03-174-5)
ते दुर्गवासं बहुधा निरुष्य; व्यतीत्य कैलासमचिन्त्यरूपम्। आसेदुरत्यर्थमनोरमं वै; तमाश्रमाग्र्यं वृषपर्वणस्ते ॥०३-१७४-६॥
te durgavāsaṃ bahudhā niruṣya; vyatītya kailāsamacintyarūpam। āseduratyarthamanoramaṃ vai; tamāśramāgryaṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaste ॥03-174-6॥
[ते (te) - they; दुर्गवासं (durgavāsaṃ) - inhabited in difficult places; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; निरुष्य (niruṣya) - having endured; व्यतीत्य (vyatītya) - having crossed over; कैलासमचिन्त्यरूपम् (kailāsamacintyarūpam) - the Kailāsa mountain of unimaginable form; आसेदुरत्यर्थमनोरमं (āseduratyarthamanoramaṃ) - they reached exceedingly charming; वै (vai) - indeed; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमाग्र्यं (āśramāgryam) - excellent hermitage; वृषपर्वणस्ते (vṛṣaparvaṇaste) - of Vṛṣaparvan, they;]
(They, having endured the inhabited difficult places in many ways; having crossed the Kailāsa of unimaginable form, they indeed reached that exceedingly charming, excellent hermitage of Vṛṣaparvan.)
Having traversed many difficult regions and passed the incomparable form of Kailāsa, they finally reached the exceedingly delightful, eminent hermitage of Vṛṣaparvan. (03-174-6)
समेत्य राज्ञा वृषपर्वणस्ते; प्रत्यर्चितास्तेन च वीतमोहाः। शशंसिरे विस्तरशः प्रवासं; शिवं यथावद्वृषपर्वणस्ते ॥०३-१७४-७॥
sametya rājñā vṛṣaparvaṇaste; pratyarcitāstena ca vītamohāḥ. śaśaṃsire vistaraśaḥ pravāsaṃ; śivaṃ yathāvad vṛṣaparvaṇaste ॥03-174-7॥
[समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; वृषपर्वण (vṛṣaparvaṇa) - by Vṛṣaparvan; ते (te) - they; प्रत्यर्चिताः (pratyarcitāḥ) - being received respectfully; तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; वीतमोहाः (vītamohāḥ) - who were free from delusion; शशंसिरे (śaśaṃsire) - they related; विस्तरशः (vistaraśaḥ) - in detail; प्रवासं (pravāsaṃ) - exile; शिवं (śivam) - auspicious; यथावद् (yathāvad) - rightly/as is proper; वृषपर्वण (vṛṣaparvaṇa) - to Vṛṣaparvan; स्ते (ste) - they;]
(Having approached, by the king Vṛṣaparvan, they, being respectfully received by him and free from delusion, related in detail the exile, auspicious, as was proper, to Vṛṣaparvan, they.)
Having approached, those who were free from delusion were respectfully received by King Vṛṣaparvan, and they explained in detail their auspicious exile to Vṛṣaparvan as was proper. (03-174-7)
सुखोषितास्तत्र त एकरात्रं; पुण्याश्रमे देवमहर्षिजुष्टे। अभ्याययुस्ते बदरीं विशालां; सुखेन वीराः पुनरेव वासम् ॥०३-१७४-८॥
sukhoṣitās tatra te ekarātraṃ; puṇyāśrame devamahaṛṣijuṣṭe. abhyāyayus te badarīṃ viśālāṃ; sukhena vīrāḥ punareva vāsam ॥03-174-8॥
[सुखोषिताः (sukhoṣitāḥ) - well-rested; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - they; एकरात्रम् (ekarātram) - one night; पुण्याश्रमे (puṇyāśrame) - in the holy hermitage; देवमहर्षिजुष्टे (devamahṛṣijuṣṭe) - inhabited by celestial sages; अभ्याययुः (abhyāyayuḥ) - approached; ते (te) - they; बदरीम् (badarīm) - Badarī; विशालाम् (viśālām) - vast; सुखेन (sukhena) - with ease; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; वासम् (vāsam) - residence;]
(Well-rested there they one night in the holy hermitage inhabited by celestial sages; they approached the vast Badarī; with ease the heroes again indeed (had) residence.)
After spending one restful night there, in the holy hermitage inhabited by celestial sages, the heroes again approached the vast Badarī and dwelt there comfortably. (03-174-8)
ऊषुस्ततस्तत्र महानुभावा; नारायणस्थानगता नराग्र्याः। कुबेरकान्तां नलिनीं विशोकाः; सम्पश्यमानाः सुरसिद्धजुष्टाम् ॥०३-१७४-९॥
ūṣus tatas tatra mahānubhāvāḥ; nārāyaṇasthānagatā narāgryaḥ. kuberakāntāṃ nalinīṃ viśokāḥ; sampaśyamānāḥ surasiddhajuṣṭām ॥03-174-9॥
[ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; महानुभावाः (mahānubhāvāḥ) - the great-souled ones; नारायणस्थानगता (nārāyaṇasthānagatā) - gone to the abode of Nārāyaṇa; नराग्र्याः (narāgryaḥ) - noble men; कुबेरकान्ताम् (kuberakāntām) - dear to Kubera; नलिनीम् (nalinīm) - the lotus (lake); विशोकाः (viśokāḥ) - free from sorrow; सम्पश्यमानाः (sampaśyamānāḥ) - beholding; सुरसिद्धजुष्टाम् (surasiddhajuṣṭām) - favored by gods and siddhas;]
(The great-souled ones then there approached; the noble men gone to the abode of Nārāyaṇa, free from sorrow, beholding the lotus (lake) dear to Kubera, favored by gods and siddhas.)
Then the great-souled noble men, having gone to the abode of Nārāyaṇa, approached and, free from sorrow, beheld the lotus lake dear to Kubera, cherished by gods and siddhas. (03-174-9)
तां चाथ दृष्ट्वा नलिनीं विशोकाः; पाण्डोः सुताः सर्वनरप्रवीराः। ते रेमिरे नन्दनवासमेत्य; द्विजर्षयो वीतभया यथैव ॥०३-१७४-१०॥
tāṃ cātha dṛṣṭvā nalinīṃ viśokāḥ; pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ sarvanarapravīrāḥ. te remire nandanavāsam etya; dvijarṣayo vītabhayā yathaiva ॥03-174-10॥
[तां (tām) - her (that one); च (ca) - and; अथ (atha) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नलिनीं (nalinīm) - (the) lotus-lake; विशोकाः (viśokāḥ) - free from grief; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; सर्वनरप्रवीराः (sarvanarapravīrāḥ) - the foremost among all men; ते (te) - they; रेमिरे (remire) - rejoiced; नन्दनवासम् (nandanavāsam) - the abode of delight (Nandana); एत्य (etya) - having reached; द्विजर्षयः (dvijarṣayaḥ) - the twice-born sages; वीतभयाः (vītabhayāḥ) - devoid of fear; यथैव (yathaiva) - just as;]
(Having then seen her, the lotus-lake, free from grief, the sons of Pāṇḍu, foremost among all men, they rejoiced, having reached the abode of delight (Nandana), just as the twice-born sages devoid of fear.)
Then, having beheld the lotus-lake, the sons of Pāṇḍu, foremost among men, free from sorrow, rejoiced on reaching the delightful Nandana grove, just like the fearless Brahmin sages. (03-174-10)
ततः क्रमेणोपययुर्नृवीरा; यथागतेनैव पथा समग्राः। विहृत्य मासं सुखिनो बदर्यां; किरातराज्ञो विषयं सुबाहोः ॥०३-१७४-११॥
tataḥ krameṇopayayur nṛvīrā; yathāgatenaiva pathā samagrāḥ। vihṛtya māsaṃ sukhino badaryāṃ; kirātarājño viṣayaṃ subāhoḥ ॥03-174-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in due order; उपययुः (upayayūḥ) - approached; नृवीराः (nṛvīrāḥ) - the heroic men; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतेन (āgatena) - by which (they had) come; एव (eva) - indeed; पथा (pathā) - by the path; समग्राः (samagrāḥ) - all together; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having spent (time); मासं (māsaṃ) - a month; सुखिनः (sukhinaḥ) - happily; बदर्यां (badaryāṃ) - in Badari; किरातराज्ञः (kirātarājñaḥ) - of the king of the Kirātas; विषयं (viṣayam) - territory; सुबाहोः (subāhoḥ) - of Subāhu;]
(Then in order the heroic men approached, indeed by the very path by which (they had) come, all together. Having spent a month happily in Badari, (they went) to the territory of the king of the Kirātas, Subāhu.)
Then the heroic men, all together, returned in order by the same path they had come. After spending a month happily at Badari, they went to the territory of Subāhu, the king of the Kirātas. (03-174-11)
चीनांस्तुखारान्दरदान्सदार्वा; न्देशान्कुणिन्दस्य च भूरिरत्नान्। अतीत्य दुर्गं हिमवत्प्रदेशं; पुरं सुबाहोर्ददृशुर्नृवीराः ॥०३-१७४-१२॥
cīnāṃstu khārān daradān sadārvān deśān kuṇindasya ca bhūri-ratnān। atītya durgaṃ himavat-pradeśaṃ; puraṃ subāhor dadṛśur nṛvīrāḥ ॥03-174-12॥
[चीनान् (cīnāṃ) - the Chinese; तुख़ारान् (tukhārān) - the Tukhāras; दरदान् (daradān) - the Daradas; सदार्वान् (sadārvān) - the Sadarvas; देशान् (deśān) - countries; कुणिन्दस्य (kuṇindasya) - of Kuṇinda; च (ca) - and; भूरि-रत्नान् (bhūri-ratnān) - abundant in jewels; अतीत्य (atītya) - having crossed; दुर्गं (durgaṃ) - difficult region; हिमवत्-प्रदेशं (himavat-pradeśaṃ) - Himalayan region; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; सुबाहोः (subāhoḥ) - of Subāhu; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; नृवीराः (nṛvīrāḥ) - heroic princes;]
(The Chinese, the Tukhāras, the Daradas, the Sadarvas—countries of Kuṇinda also, abundant in jewels—having crossed the difficult Himalayan region, the heroic princes saw the city of Subāhu.)
Having crossed the difficult Himalayan region and the jewel-rich countries of the Chinese, Tukhāras, Daradas, Sadarvas, and Kuṇinda, the heroic princes saw the city of Subāhu. (03-174-12)
श्रुत्वा च तान्पार्थिवपुत्रपौत्रा; न्प्राप्तान्सुबाहुर्विषये समग्रान्। प्रत्युद्ययौ प्रीतियुतः स राजा; तं चाभ्यनन्दन्वृषभाः कुरूणाम् ॥०३-१७४-१३॥
śrutvā ca tān pārthivaputrapautrān prāptān subāhur viṣaye samagrān। pratyudyayau prītiyutaḥ sa rājā taṃ cābhyanandan vṛṣabhāḥ kurūṇām॥03-174-13॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; पार्थिवपुत्रपौत्रान् (pārthivaputrapautrān) - sons and grandsons of kings; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - arrived; सुबाहुः (subāhuḥ) - Subāhu; विषये (viṣaye) - in the territory; समग्रान् (samagrān) - all; प्रत्युद्ययौ (pratyudyayau) - went forth to meet; प्रीतियुतः (prītiyutaḥ) - endowed with affection; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; अभ्यनन्दन् (abhyanandan) - welcomed; वृषभाः (vṛṣabhāḥ) - chiefs; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus;]
(Having heard and those sons and grandsons of kings arrived, Subāhu in the territory all, went forth to meet affection-endowed he king; him and welcomed chiefs of the Kurus.)
Having heard that all those sons and grandsons of kings had arrived in his territory, King Subāhu, full of affection, went forth to meet them; and the chiefs of the Kurus welcomed him. (03-174-13)
समेत्य राज्ञा तु सुबाहुना ते; सूतैर्विशोकप्रमुखैश्च सर्वैः। सहेन्द्रसेनैः परिचारकैश्च; पौरोगवैर्ये च महानसस्थाः ॥०३-१७४-१४॥
sametya rājñā tu subāhunā te; sūtair viśokapramukhaiś ca sarvaiḥ. sahendrasenaiḥ paricārakaiś ca; paurogavair ye ca mahānasasthāḥ ॥03-174-14॥
[समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; तु (tu) - but; सुबाहुना (subāhunā) - by Subāhuna; ते (te) - they; सूतैः (sūtaiḥ) - by charioteers; विशोकप्रमुखैः (viśokapramukhaiḥ) - headed by Viśoka; च (ca) - and; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; सहेन्द्रसेनैः (sahendrasenaiḥ) - together with Indrasena; परिचारकैः (paricārakaiḥ) - by attendants; च (ca) - and; पौरोगवैः (paurogavaiḥ) - by family priests; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; महानसस्थाः (mahānasasthāḥ) - those situated in the kitchen;]
(Having assembled by the king indeed and by Subāhuna, they; by the charioteers headed by Viśoka and all; together with Indrasena and by attendants and by family priests who and those situated in the kitchen.)
Having assembled by the king and by Subāhuna, they, along with all the charioteers headed by Viśoka, together with Indrasena and the attendants, the family priests, and those stationed in the kitchen, (acted thus). (03-174-14)
सुखोषितास्तत्र त एकरात्रं; सूतानुपादाय रथांश्च सर्वान्। घटोत्कचं सानुचरं विसृज्य; ततोऽभ्ययुर्यामुनमद्रिराजम् ॥०३-१७४-१५॥

(Having passed the night happily there, they, having taken all the charioteers and chariots, having dismissed Ghaṭotkaca with his followers, then approached the king of mountains by the Yamunā.)
After spending a pleasant night there, they took all their charioteers and chariots, dismissed Ghaṭotkaca and his followers, and then proceeded to the king of mountains by the Yamunā. (03-174-15)
तस्मिन्गिरौ प्रस्रवणोपपन्ने; हिमोत्तरीयारुणपाण्डुसानौ। विशाखयूपं समुपेत्य चक्रु; स्तदा निवासं पुरुषप्रवीराः ॥०३-१७४-१६॥
tasmin girau prasravaṇopapanne; himottarīyāruṇapāṇḍusānau. viśākhayūpaṃ samupetya cakru; stadā nivāsaṃ puruṣapravīrāḥ ॥03-174-16॥

(An island was, where of Vṛkodara; Yudhiṣṭhira, among bearers of dharma the most eminent, who released him of infinite brilliance, by the crocodile enveloped in all limbs.)

ते द्वादशं वर्षमथोपयान्तं; वने विहर्तुं कुरवः प्रतीताः। तस्माद्वनाच्चैत्ररथप्रकाशा; च्छ्रिया ज्वलन्तस्तपसा च युक्ताः ॥०३-१७४-२०॥
te dvādaśaṃ varṣam athopayāntaṃ; vane vihartuṃ kuravaḥ pratītāḥ। tasmād vanāc caitrarathaprakāśā; śriyā jvalantas tapasā ca yuktāḥ ॥03-174-20॥

(They, the twelfth year then coming to an end, in the forest to roam the Kurus appeared. Therefore, from the forest, splendid as the Caitraratha, shining with beauty and endowed with austerity.)
When the twelfth year was coming to an end, the Kurus appeared ready to roam in the forest. Therefore, coming from the forest, brilliant as Caitraratha, radiant with beauty and endowed with asceticism. (03-174-20)
ततश्च यात्वा मरुधन्वपार्श्वं; सदा धनुर्वेदरतिप्रधानाः। सरस्वतीमेत्य निवासकामाः; सरस्ततो द्वैतवनं प्रतीयुः ॥०३-१७४-२१॥

तां यक्षगन्धर्वमहर्षिकान्ता; मायागभूतामिव देवतानाम्। सरस्वतीं प्रीतियुताश्चरन्तः; सुखं विजह्रुर्नरदेवपुत्राः ॥०३-१७४-२४॥
