स भीमसेनस्तेजस्वी तथा सर्पवशं गतः। चिन्तयामास सर्पस्य वीर्यमत्यद्भुतं महत् ॥०३-१७६-१॥
sa bhīmasenastejasvī tathā sarpavaśaṃ gataḥ। cintayāmāsa sarpasya vīryam atyadbhutaṃ mahat॥03-176-1॥
[स (sa) - he; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - powerful; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्पवशं (sarpavaśaṃ) - under the control of the serpent; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he pondered; सर्पस्य (sarpasya) - of the serpent; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; अत्यद्भुतं (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(He, Bhīmasena, powerful, thus having gone under the control of the serpent, pondered the strength of the serpent, very wonderful, great.)
Thus powerful Bhīmasena, having fallen under the serpent's control, pondered upon the serpent's very wondrous and great strength. (03-176-1)
उवाच च महासर्पं कामया ब्रूहि पन्नग। कस्त्वं भो भुजगश्रेष्ठ किं मया च करिष्यसि ॥०३-१७६-२॥
uvāca ca mahāsarpaṃ kāmayā brūhi pannaga। kastvaṃ bho bhujagaśreṣṭha kiṃ mayā ca kariṣyasi ॥03-176-2॥

(And spoke to the great serpent with desire: "Say, O serpent, who are you, O best of serpents? What will you do by me?" (03-176-2))
And, desiring, he spoke to the great serpent: "Tell me, O serpent, who are you, O best of serpents? And what will you do with me?" (03-176-2)
पाण्डवो भिमसेनोऽहं धर्मराजादनन्तरः। नागायुतसमप्राणस्त्वया नीतः कथं वशम् ॥०३-१७६-३॥
pāṇḍavo bhimaseno'ham dharmarājādanantaraḥ। nāgāyutasamaprāṇastvayā nītaḥ kathaṃ vaśam ॥03-176-3॥

(I, Bhimasena, descendant of Pandu, immediately succeeding Dharmarāja, of strength equal to ten thousand elephants, by you led how under control.)
I am Bhimasena, the son of Pandu, next after Dharmarāja. Though possessing strength equal to ten thousand elephants, how have I been brought under your control by you? (03-176-3)
सिंहाः केसरिणो व्याघ्रा महिषा वारणास्तथा। समागताश्च बहुशो निहताश्च मया मृधे ॥०३-१७६-४॥
siṁhāḥ kesariṇo vyāghrā mahiṣā vāraṇās tathā। samāgatāś ca bahuśo nihatāś ca mayā mṛdhe ॥03-176-4॥
[सिंहाः (siṁhāḥ) - lions;, केसरिणः (kesariṇaḥ) - lions;, व्याघ्राः (vyāghrāḥ) - tigers;, महिषाः (mahiṣāḥ) - buffaloes;, वारणाः (vāraṇāḥ) - elephants;, तथा (tathā) - thus;, समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;, च (ca) - and;, बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times;, निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain;, च (ca) - and;, मया (mayā) - by me;, मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle;]
(Lions, lions, tigers, buffaloes, elephants thus, assembled and many times slain and by me in battle.)
Lions, tigers, buffaloes, and elephants, having assembled many times, were slain by me in battle. (03-176-4)
दानवाश्च पिशाचाश्च राक्षसाश्च महाबलाः। भुजवेगमशक्ता मे सोढुं पन्नगसत्तम ॥०३-१७६-५॥
dānavāś ca piśācāś ca rākṣasāś ca mahā-balāḥ। bhuja-vegam aśaktā me soḍhuṃ pannaga-sattama ॥03-176-5॥
[दानवाः (dānavāḥ) (dānavāḥ) - dānavas; च (ca) (ca) - and; पिशाचाः (piśācāḥ) (piśācāḥ) - evil spirits; च (ca) (ca) - and; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; च (ca) (ca) - and; महाबलाः (mahā-balāḥ) (mahā-balāḥ) - of great strength; भुजवेगम् (bhuja-vegam) (bhuja-vegam) - the force of (my) arm; अशक्ताः (aśaktāḥ) (aśaktāḥ) - unable; मे (me) (me) - my; सोढुम् (soḍhum) (soḍhum) - to endure; पन्नगसत्तम (pannaga-sattama) (pannaga-sattama) - O best of serpents;]
(Dānavas and piśācas and rākṣasas of great strength, the force of (my) arm unable my to endure, O best of serpents.)
Even the dānavas, piśācas, and rākṣasas of great strength are unable to endure the force of my arm, O best of serpents. (03-176-5)
किं नु विद्याबलं किं वा वरदानमथो तव। उद्योगमपि कुर्वाणो वशगोऽस्मि कृतस्त्वया ॥०३-१७६-६॥
kiṁ nu vidyā-balaṁ kiṁ vā vara-dānam atho tava। udyogam api kurvāṇo vaśagaḥ asmi kṛtaḥ tvayā ॥03-176-6॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; विद्याबलं (vidyā-balaṁ) - the strength of knowledge; किं (kiṁ) - what; वा (vā) - or; वरदानम् (vara-dānam) - boon-giving; अथ (atho) - then; तव (tava) - your; उद्योगम् (udyogam) - effort; अपि (api) - also; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; वशगः (vaśagaḥ) - subjugated; अस्मि (asmi) - am; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(What indeed is the power of knowledge, what or the bestowal of a boon, then, your (gift)? Even while making effort, subjugated am (I), made by you.)
What is the use of knowledge's power or of receiving a boon from you? Even when I make every effort, I am completely under your control by your doing. (03-176-6)
असत्यो विक्रमो नॄणामिति मे निश्चिता मतिः। यथेदं मे त्वया नाग बलं प्रतिहतं महत् ॥०३-१७६-७॥
asatyo vikramo nṝṇāmiti me niścitā matiḥ। yathedaṃ me tvayā nāga balaṃ pratihataṃ mahat॥03-176-7॥
[असत्यः (asatyaḥ) - not true; false; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - valor; courage; नॄणाम् (nṝṇām) - of men; इति (iti) - thus; so; मे (me) - my; to me; निश्चिता (niścitā) - ascertained; determined; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; conviction; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मे (me) - my; to me; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नाग (nāga) - elephant; (or name, contextually 'elephant'); बलम् (balaṃ) - strength; force; प्रतिहतम् (pratihataṃ) - repelled; struck down; महत् (mahat) - great; ॥०३-१७६-७॥ (॥03-176-7॥) - ;]
(False is the valor of men – thus is my ascertained thought; as this great strength of the elephant has been repelled by you for me.)
My firm conviction is that the valor of men is false; for just as, for me, this great strength of the elephant has been overpowered by you. (03-176-7)
इत्येवंवादिनं वीरं भीममक्लिष्टकारिणम्। भोगेन महता सर्पः समन्तात्पर्यवेष्टयत् ॥०३-१७६-८॥
ityevaṃ vādinaṃ vīraṃ bhīmam akliṣṭakāriṇam। bhogena mahatā sarpaḥ samantāt paryaveṣṭayat ॥03-176-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this manner; वादिनं (vādinaṃ) - speaking; वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; अक्लिष्टकारिणम् (akliṣṭakāriṇam) - doing what is not difficult; भोगेन (bhogena) - with body (coil); महता (mahatā) - great; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - the serpent; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; पर्यवेष्टयत् (paryaveṣṭayat) - enveloped;]
(Thus, as he was speaking in this manner, the hero Bhīma, doer of what is not difficult, with a great body (coil), the serpent from all sides enveloped.)
As Bhīma, the heroic doer of fearless deeds, was speaking thus, the great serpent coiled itself around him from all sides. (03-176-8)
निगृह्य तं महाबाहुं ततः स भुजगस्तदा। विमुच्यास्य भुजौ पीनाविदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१७६-९॥
nigṛhya taṃ mahābāhuṃ tataḥ sa bhujagastadā। vimucyāsya bhujau pīnāvidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥03-176-9॥
[निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having seized; तं (taṃ) - him; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṃ) - mighty-armed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भुजगस्तदा (bhujagastadā) - the serpent then; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; अस्य (asya) - his; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms (dual); पीनौ (pīṇau) - thick; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having seized him, the mighty-armed, then that serpent then, having released his thick arms, this speech said.)
Having seized the mighty-armed one, then that serpent, having released his strong arms, spoke this speech. (03-176-9)
दिष्ट्या त्वं क्षुधितस्याद्य देवैर्भक्षो महाभुज। दिष्ट्या कालस्य महतः प्रियाः प्राणा हि देहिनाम् ॥०३-१७६-१०॥
diṣṭyā tvaṃ kṣudhitasya adya devaiḥ bhakṣaḥ mahābhuja। diṣṭyā kālasya mahataḥ priyāḥ prāṇāḥ hi dehinām ॥03-176-10॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; क्षुधितस्य (kṣudhitasya) - of the hungry; आद्य (adya) - today; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; भक्षः (bhakṣaḥ) - food; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by good fortune; कालस्य (kālasya) - of death; of time; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - lives; हि (hi) - indeed; देहिनाम् (dehinām) - of embodied beings;]
(By fortune, you, today, for the hungry, are food by the gods, O mighty-armed. By good fortune, the dear lives of embodied beings indeed (are) of death, the great.)
By good fortune, today you, O mighty-armed, have become food for the hungry by the will of the gods. By good fortune, the cherished lives of embodied beings truly belong to great Time (death). (03-176-10)
यथा त्विदं मया प्राप्तं भुजङ्गत्वमरिंदम। तदवश्यं मया ख्याप्यं तवाद्य शृणु सत्तम ॥०३-१७६-११॥
yathā tvidaṁ mayā prāptaṁ bhujaṅgatvamarindama. tadavaśyaṁ mayā khyāpyaṁ tavādya śṛṇu sattama ॥03-176-11॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner that; त्व् (tv) - indeed; (emphatic particle); इदं (idaṁ) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राप्तं (prāptaṁ) - obtained; reached; भुजङ्गत्वम् (bhujaṅgatvam) - the state of being a serpent; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes; तत् (tat) - that; अवश्यं (avaśyaṁ) - surely; necessarily; मया (mayā) - by me; ख्याप्यं (khyāpyaṁ) - to be declared; to be made known; त्व (tva) - to you; आद्य (ādya) - today; now; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; सत्तम (sattama) - O best of beings;]
(As indeed this by me obtained state of serpent, O subduer of foes, that surely by me is to be declared to you today; hear, O best of beings.)
O subduer of foes, the way I obtained this serpentine state must surely be declared by me to you today. Listen, O best of beings. (03-176-11)
इमामवस्थां सम्प्राप्तो ह्यहं कोपान्मनीषिणाम्। शापस्यान्तं परिप्रेप्सुः सर्पस्य कथयामि तत् ॥०३-१७६-१२॥
imāmavasthāṃ samprāpto hyahaṃ kopānmanīṣiṇām। śāpasya antaṃ pariprepsuḥ sarpasya kathayāmi tat॥03-176-12॥
[इमाम् (imām) - this; अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - state; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - reached; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; मनीषिणाम् (manīṣiṇām) - of the wise; शापस्य (śāpasya) - of the curse; अन्तम् (antam) - end; परिप्रेप्सुः (pariprepsuḥ) - desiring to know; सर्पस्य (sarpasya) - of the serpent; कथयामि (kathayāmi) - I narrate; तत् (tat) - that;]
(This state reached indeed I from anger of the wise; of the curse's end, desiring to know, of the serpent, I narrate that.)
I have indeed reached this state from the anger of the wise; desiring to know the end of the serpent's curse, I narrate that. (03-176-12)
नहुषो नाम राजर्षिर्व्यक्तं ते श्रोत्रमागतः। तवैव पूर्वः पूर्वेषामायोर्वंशकरः सुतः ॥०३-१७६-१३॥
nahuṣo nāma rājarṣirvyaktaṃ te śrotramāgataḥ। tavaiva pūrvaḥ pūrveṣāmāyorvaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ॥03-176-13॥

(Nahuṣa by name, the royal sage, indeed has come clearly to your ear; your forefather of the former ones, Ayu's lineage-maker son.)
Nahuṣa by name, the royal sage, has clearly come to your notice; he was your forefather among the ancestors, the son who was the originator of Ayu's lineage. (03-176-13)
सोऽहं शापादगस्त्यस्य ब्राह्मणानवमन्य च। इमामवस्थामापन्नः पश्य दैवमिदं मम ॥०३-१७६-१४॥
so'haṃ śāpād-agastyasya brāhmaṇān-avamanya ca। imām avasthām āpannaḥ paśya daivam idaṃ mama ॥03-176-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - brāhmaṇas (the Brāhmaṇas); अवमन्य (avamanya) - disrespecting; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this (feminine accusative); अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - state, condition; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - having attained; पश्य (paśya) - see; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; destiny; इदम् (idam) - this; मम (mama) - of me;]
(He—I from (the) curse of Agastya, disrespecting Brāhmaṇas and, this state having attained—see fate this of me.)
I am the one who, on account of Agastya’s curse (and) disrespecting the Brāhmaṇas, has fallen into this condition; see this fate of mine. (03-176-14)
त्वां चेदवध्यमायान्तमतीव प्रियदर्शनम्। अहमद्योपयोक्ष्यामि विधानं पश्य यादृशम् ॥०३-१७६-१५॥
tvāṃ ced avadhyam āyāntam atīva priyadarśanam। aham adya upayokṣyāmi vidhānaṃ paśya yādṛśam॥03-176-15॥
[त्वां (tvāṃ) - you (accusative singular); चेत् (cet) - if; अवध्यम् (avadhyam) - not to be slain; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; प्रियदर्शनम् (priyadarśanam) - whose appearance is very pleasing; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; उपयोक्ष्यामि (upayokṣyāmi) - I will employ; विधानम् (vidhānam) - means; पश्य (paśya) - see; यादृशम् (yādṛśam) - of what kind;]
(You, if not to be slain, coming, exceedingly pleasing to behold, I today will employ a means. See of what kind.)
If you who are not to be slain and who are exceedingly pleasant to look at are coming, today I will employ a means. See what kind it is. (03-176-15)
न हि मे मुच्यते कश्चित्कथञ्चिद्ग्रहणं गतः। गजो वा महिषो वापि षष्ठे काले नरोत्तम ॥०३-१७६-१६॥
na hi me mucyate kaścit kathaṃcid grahaṇaṃ gataḥ। gajo vā mahiṣo vāpi ṣaṣṭhe kāle narottama ॥03-176-16॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - for; मे (me) - to me; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; कथञ्चित् (kathaṃcit) - in any way; ग्रहणम् (grahaṇam) - imprisonment; गतः (gataḥ) - gone (who has gone); गजः (gajaḥ) - elephant; वा (vā) - or; महिषः (mahiṣaḥ) - buffalo; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth; काले (kāle) - time; नरोत्तम (narottama) - O best of men;]
(For to me is not released anyone, in any way, who has gone into imprisonment; an elephant or a buffalo or even (anyone else), O best of men, in the sixth time.)
O best of men, truly, no one who has fallen into captivity is ever released by me in any way, be it an elephant, a buffalo, or anyone else, even at the sixth period. (03-176-16)
नासि केवलसर्पेण तिर्यग्योनिषु वर्तता। गृहीतः कौरवश्रेष्ठ वरदानमिदं मम ॥०३-१७६-१७॥
nāsi kevalasarpeṇa tiryagyoniṣu vartatā। gṛhītaḥ kauravaśreṣṭha varadānam idaṃ mama ॥03-176-17॥
[न (na) - not; असि (asi) - you are; केवलसर्पेण (kevalasarpeṇa) - by only a serpent; तिर्यग्योनिषु (tiryagyoniṣu) - among animal births; वर्तता (vartatā) - existing; गृहीतः (gṛhītaḥ) - accepted; कौरवश्रेष्ठ (kauravaśreṣṭha) - O best of Kauravas; वरदानम् (varadānam) - boon; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - of me;]
(Not you are by only a serpent existing among animal births; accepted, O best of Kauravas, this boon of me.)
You are not one who exists among animal births just as an ordinary serpent; you have accepted this boon of mine, O best of the Kauravas. (03-176-17)
पतता हि विमानाग्रान्मया शक्रासनाद्द्रुतम्। कुरु शापान्तमित्युक्तो भगवान्मुनिसत्तमः ॥०३-१७६-१८॥
patatā hi vimānāgrān-mayā śakrāsanād-drutam। kuru śāpāntam-ity-ukto bhagavān-munisattamaḥ ॥03-176-18॥
[पतता (patatā) - by falling; हि (hi) - indeed; विमानाग्रात् (vimānāgrāt) - from the top of the aerial car; मया (mayā) - by me; शक्रासनात् (śakrāsanāt) - from Indra's seat; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; कुरु (kuru) - do; शापान्तम् (śāpāntam) - end of the curse; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - O best of sages;]
(By falling indeed from the top of the aerial car by me from Indra's seat quickly, do the end of the curse—thus said the illustrious one, O best of sages.)
The illustrious one, O best of sages, said, "By falling quickly from the top of the aerial car and from Indra's seat by me, bring about the end of the curse." (03-176-18)
स मामुवाच तेजस्वी कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः। मोक्षस्ते भविता राजन्कस्माच्चित्कालपर्ययात् ॥०३-१७६-१९॥
sa mām uvāca tejasvī kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ। mokṣas te bhavitā rājan kasmāc cit kāla-paryayāt॥03-176-19॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me (accusative singular); उवाच (uvāca) - said; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - the radiant one; कृपया (kṛpayā) - with compassion; अभिपरिप्लुतः (abhipariplutaḥ) - completely filled; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; ते (te) - for you; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from some; चित् (cit) - uncertain; कालपर्ययात् (kāla-paryayāt) - by turn of time;]
(He said to me, the radiant one, completely filled with compassion: liberation for you, O king, will be by some turn of time.)
He, the radiant one, completely filled with compassion, said to me: "Liberation will be yours, O king, after a certain passage of time." (03-176-19)
ततोऽस्मि पतितो भूमौ न च मामजहात्स्मृतिः। स्मार्तमस्ति पुराणं मे यथैवाधिगतं तथा ॥०३-१७६-२०॥
tato'smi patito bhūmau na ca mām ajahāt smṛtiḥ। smārtam asti purāṇaṃ me yathaivādhigataṃ tathā ॥03-176-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; अजहात् (ajahāt) - did abandon; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; स्मार्तम् (smārtam) - tradition (of Smārta, sacred law); अस्ति (asti) - there is; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - the Purāṇa; मे (me) - of mine; यथा (yathā) - as; एव (eva) - indeed; अधिगतम् (adhigatam) - understood; attained; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner;]
(From then I am fallen on the ground and memory did not abandon me. Tradition (of sacred law) there is, the Purāṇa of mine, as indeed understood so.)
From then I fell to the ground, but my memory did not abandon me. I still retain the traditions, and the Purāṇa I possess is just as I had previously understood. (03-176-20)
यस्तु ते व्याहृतान्प्रश्नान्प्रतिब्रूयाद्विशेषवित्। स त्वां मोक्षयिता शापादिति मामब्रवीदृषिः ॥०३-१७६-२१॥
yastu te vyāhṛtānpraśnān pratibrūyād viśeṣavit। sa tvāṃ mokṣayitā śāpād iti mām abravīd ṛṣiḥ ॥03-176-21॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; व्याहृतान् (vyāhṛtān) - spoken; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; प्रतिब्रूयात् (pratibrūyāt) - should reply; विशेषवित् (viśeṣavit) - one who knows details; स (sa) - he; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मोक्षयिता (mokṣayitā) - will release; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage;]
(Who but your spoken questions should reply, one who knows details; he will release you from the curse—thus to me the sage said.)
The sage said to me: 'He who is able to answer your spoken questions in detail, he will free you from the curse.' (03-176-21)
गृहीतस्य त्वया राजन्प्राणिनोऽपि बलीयसः। सत्त्वभ्रंशोऽधिकस्यापि सर्वस्याशु भविष्यति ॥०३-१७६-२२॥
gṛhītasya tvayā rājan prāṇino'pi balīyasaḥ। sattvabhraṃśo'dhikasyāpi sarvasyāśu bhaviṣyati ॥03-176-22॥
[गृहीतस्य (gṛhītasya) - of one who has been seized; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - of a being; अपि (api) - even; बलीयसः (balīyasaḥ) - of the stronger; सत्त्वभ्रंशः (sattvabhraṃśaḥ) - loss of strength; अधिकस्य (adhikasya) - of one who is superior; अपि (api) - even; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of everyone; आशु (āśu) - quickly; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will occur;]
(Of one who has been seized by you, O king, of a being even if stronger, loss of strength of even the superior, of everyone, quickly will occur.)
O king, for someone who is seized by you, even if the being is stronger or superior, everyone will quickly lose strength. (03-176-22)
इति चाप्यहमश्रौषं वचस्तेषां दयावताम्। मयि सञ्जातहार्दानामथ तेऽन्तर्हिता द्विजाः ॥०३-१७६-२३॥
iti cāpy aham aśrauṣam vacas teṣāṃ dayāvatām। mayi sañjāta-hārdānām atha te'ntarhitā dvijāḥ ॥03-176-23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - heard; वचः (vacas) - speech; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; दयावताम् (dayāvatām) - compassionate; मयि (mayi) - in me; सञ्जातहार्दानाम् (sañjāta-hārdānām) - having developed affection in the heart; अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - disappeared; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (Brahmins);]
(Thus and also I heard the speech of those compassionate ones. In me, having developed affection in the heart, then those twice-born disappeared.)
Thus I also heard the words of those compassionate Brahmins, and when affection had arisen in my heart, then those twice-born disappeared. (03-176-23)
सोऽहं परमदुष्कर्मा वसामि निरयेऽशुचौ। सर्पयोनिमिमां प्राप्य कालाकाङ्क्षी महाद्युते ॥०३-१७६-२४॥
so'haṁ paramaduṣkarmā vasāmi niraye'śucau। sarpayonimimāṁ prāpya kālākāṅkṣī mahādyute ॥03-176-24॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; परमदुष्कर्मा (paramaduṣkarmā) - most evil-doer; वसामि (vasāmi) - dwell; निरये (niraye) - in hell; अशुचौ (aśucau) - unclean; सर्प-योनिम् (sarpa-yonim) - serpent womb (birth as a serpent); इमाम् (imām) - this; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; काल-अकाङ्क्षी (kāla-akāṅkṣī) - awaiting time (expecting death); महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly resplendent one;]
(He, I, most evil-doer, dwell in hell, unclean; having obtained this serpent womb, awaiting time, O greatly resplendent one.)
I, who am the most evil-doer, dwell in the unclean hell; having obtained this serpent birth, I await death, O greatly radiant one. (03-176-24)
तमुवाच महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो भुजङ्गमम्। न ते कुप्ये महासर्प न चात्मानं विगर्हये ॥०३-१७६-२५॥
tam uvāca mahābāhur bhīmaseno bhujaṅgamam। na te kupye mahāsarpa na cātmānaṃ vigarhaye ॥03-176-25॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; भुजङ्गम् (bhujaṅgam) - serpent; न (na) - not; ते (te) - at you; कुप्ये (kupye) - I am angry; महासर्प (mahāsarpa) - O great serpent; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; विगर्हये (vigarhaye) - I blame;]
(Him said mighty-armed Bhimasena to the serpent. Not at you am I angry, O great serpent, and not myself do I blame.)
Mighty-armed Bhimasena spoke to the serpent: "I am not angry at you, O great serpent, nor do I blame myself." (03-176-25)
यस्मादभावी भावी वा मनुष्यः सुखदुःखयोः। आगमे यदि वापाये न तत्र ग्लपयेन्मनः ॥०३-१७६-२६॥
yasmād abhāvī bhāvī vā manuṣyaḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ। āgame yadi vā apāye na tatra glapayet manaḥ॥03-176-26॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; अभावी (abhāvī) - what is not to be; भावी (bhāvī) - what is to be; वा (vā) - or; मनुष्यः (manuṣyaḥ) - a person; सुखदुःखयोः (sukhaduḥkhayoḥ) - in happiness and sorrow; आगमे (āgame) - in arising; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपाये (apāye) - in departure; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; ग्लपयेत् (glapayet) - should make faint; मनः (manaḥ) - the mind;]
(Because of which, what is not to be, or what is to be, a person, in happiness and sorrow, in arising if or in departure, not there should make the mind faint.)
Therefore, whether what is destined not to be or what is to be, a person, in happiness and sorrow, upon their arising or departure, should not let the mind become dejected there. (03-176-26)
दैवं पुरुषकारेण को निवर्तितुमर्हति। दैवमेव परं मन्ये पुरुषार्थो निरर्थकः ॥०३-१७६-२७॥
daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa ko nivartitum arhati। daivam eva paraṃ manye puruṣārtho nirarthakaḥ ॥03-176-27॥
[दैवं (daivaṃ) - fate; destiny; पुरुषकारेण (puruṣakāreṇa) - by human effort; को (ko) - who; निवर्तितुम् (nivartitum) - to avert; to turn back; अर्हति (arhati) - is able; is worthy; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; destiny; एव (eva) - alone; indeed; परम् (param) - supreme; highest; मन्ये (manye) - I think; I consider; पुरुषार्थः (puruṣārthaḥ) - human effort; निरर्थकः (nirarthakaḥ) - fruitless; useless;]
(Fate by human effort who to avert is able? Fate alone the highest I think, human effort is fruitless.)
Who is able to avert fate by human effort? I consider fate alone as supreme; human effort is fruitless. (03-176-27)
पश्य दैवोपघाताद्धि भुजवीर्यव्यपाश्रयम्। इमामवस्थां सम्प्राप्तमनिमित्तमिहाद्य माम् ॥०३-१७६-२८॥
paśya daivopaghātāddhi bhujavīryavyapāśrayam। imāmavasthāṃ samprāptamanimittamihādya mām ॥03-176-28॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; दैवोपघातात् (daivopaghātāt) - from the blow of fate; हि (hi) - indeed; भुजवीर्यव्यपाश्रयम् (bhujavīryavyapāśrayam) - reliant on the strength of the arm; इमाम् (imām) - this; अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - state; सम्प्राप्तम् (samprāptam) - (I have) attained; अनिमित्तम् (animittam) - without cause; इह (iha) - here; अद्य (adya) - today; माम् (mām) - me;]
(See, indeed from the blow of fate, reliant on the strength of the arm, this state without cause, here today, (has) come to me.)
See how, although relying on the strength of my arm, due to the blow of fate, I have today come to this unforeseen state here. (03-176-28)
किं तु नाद्यानुशोचामि तथात्मानं विनाशितम्। यथा तु विपिने न्यस्तान्भ्रातॄन्राज्यपरिच्युतान् ॥०३-१७६-२९॥
kiṁ tu nādyānuśocāmi tathātmānaṁ vināśitam। yathā tu vipine nyastānbhrātṝnrājya-paricyutān ॥03-176-29॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; अनुशोचामि (anuśocāmi) - I grieve; तथा (tathā) - thus; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - self; विनाशितम् (vināśitam) - destroyed; यथा (yathā) - as; तु (tu) - but; विपिने (vipine) - in the forest; न्यस्तान् (nyastān) - abandoned; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; राज्यपरिच्युतान् (rājya-paricyutān) - deprived of kingdom;]
(What but not today I grieve, thus myself destroyed; as but in the forest abandoned brothers, deprived of kingdom.)
But it is not for my own destruction that I grieve today, but for my brothers abandoned in the forest, deprived of the kingdom. (03-176-29)
हिमवांश्च सुदुर्गोऽयं यक्षराक्षससङ्कुलः। मां च ते समुदीक्षन्तः प्रपतिष्यन्ति विह्वलाः ॥०३-१७६-३०॥
himavāṁś ca sudurgo'yaṁ yakṣarakṣasasaṅkulaḥ. māṁ ca te samudīkṣantaḥ prapatiṣyanti vihvalāḥ ॥03-176-30॥
[हिमवांश् (himavāṁś) - the Himalayas; च (ca) - and; सुदुर्गः (sudurgaḥ) - very difficult to cross; अयम् (ayam) - this; यक्षराक्षससङ्कुलः (yakṣarakṣasasaṅkulaḥ) - thronged with yakṣas and rākṣasas; माम् (mām) - at me; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; समुदीक्षन्तः (samudīkṣantaḥ) - gazing closely; प्रपतिष्यन्ति (prapatiṣyanti) - will fall upon; विह्वलाः (vihvalāḥ) - excited;]
(The Himalayas and this very difficult to cross, thronged with yakṣas and rākṣasas; at me also they, gazing closely, will fall, excited.)
The Himalayas, and this region, very difficult to traverse and filled with yakṣas and rākṣasas—those beings, looking intently at me, will fall upon me in excitement. (03-176-30)
विनष्टमथ वा श्रुत्वा भविष्यन्ति निरुद्यमाः। धर्मशीला मया ते हि बाध्यन्ते राज्यगृद्धिना ॥०३-१७६-३१॥
vinaṣṭam atha vā śrutvā bhaviṣyanti nirudyamāḥ। dharmaśīlā mayā te hi bādhyante rājyagṛddhinā ॥03-176-31॥
[विनष्टम् (vinaṣṭam) - destroyed; अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; निरुद्यमाः (nirudyamāḥ) - devoid of effort; धर्मशीलाः (dharmaśīlāḥ) - virtuous in character; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; बाध्यन्ते (bādhyante) - are troubled; राज्यगृद्धिना (rājyagṛddhinā) - by (my) greed for kingdom;]
(Having heard that (everything is) destroyed, then or (otherwise), they will become devoid of effort; the virtuous in character, indeed, by me they are troubled by greed for kingdom.)
After hearing that all is lost, then, or otherwise, they will become dispirited and inactive; the virtuous ones, indeed, are troubled by me because of my greed for kingship. (03-176-31)
अथ वा नार्जुनो धीमान्विषादमुपयास्यति। सर्वास्त्रविदनाधृष्यो देवगन्धर्वराक्षसैः ॥०३-१७६-३२॥
atha vā nārjuno dhīmān viṣādam upayāsyati। sarvāstravid anādhṛṣyo deva-gandharva-rākṣasaiḥ ॥03-176-32॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; नार्जुनः (na arjunaḥ) - not Arjuna; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; विषादम् (viṣādam) - despondency; उपयास्यति (upayāsyati) - will approach; सर्वास्त्रविद् (sarvāstra-vit) - knower of all weapons; अनाधृष्यः (anādhṛṣyaḥ) - invincible; देवगन्धर्वराक्षसैः (deva-gandharva-rākṣasaiḥ) - by gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas;]
(Then or not Arjuna, wise, will approach despondency. The knower of all weapons, invincible by gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas.)
Or else, wise Arjuna will not succumb to despondency. He, the master of all weapons, is invincible even to gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas. (3-176-32)
समर्थः स महाबाहुरेकाह्ना सुमहाबलः। देवराजमपि स्थानात्प्रच्यावयितुमोजसा ॥०३-१७६-३३॥
samarthaḥ sa mahābāhur-ekāhnā sumahābalaḥ। devarājam-api sthānāt-pracyāvayitum-o-jasā ॥03-176-33॥
[समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; स (sa) - he; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - having great strength; देवराजम् (devarājam) - the king of the gods (Indra); अपि (api) - even; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from (his) position; प्रच्यावयितुम् (pracyāvayitum) - to dislodge; ओजसा (ojasā) - by (his) vigor;]
(Capable he mighty-armed, in one day, having great strength, even the king of the gods from position to dislodge by vigor.)
He, the mighty-armed and greatly powerful, is capable in a single day, by his vigor, even of dislodging the king of the gods from his position. (03-176-33)
किं पुनर्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम्। विद्विष्टं सर्वलोकस्य दम्भलोभपरायणम् ॥०३-१७६-३४॥
kiṁ punar dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraṁ durdyūta-devinam। vidviṣṭaṁ sarvalokasya dambha-lobha-parāyaṇam॥03-176-34॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; पुनः (punar) - again; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पुत्रं (putraṁ) - the son; दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् (durdyūta-devinam) - one given to wicked gambling; विद्विष्टं (vidviṣṭaṁ) - hated; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - by all people; दम्भलोभपरायणम् (dambha-lobha-parāyaṇam) - devoted to deceit and greed;]
(What again (of/about) Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, devoted to wicked gambling, hated by all people, devoted to deceit and greed.)
But what then is to be said of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, who is addicted to wicked gambling, hated by everyone, and given over to deceit and greed? (03-176-34)
मातरं चैव शोचामि कृपणां पुत्रगृद्धिनीम्। यास्माकं नित्यमाशास्ते महत्त्वमधिकं परैः ॥०३-१७६-३५॥
mātaraṃ caiva śocāmi kṛpaṇāṃ putragṛddhinīm। yāsmākaṃ nityamāśāste mahattvamadhikaṃ paraiḥ ॥03-176-35॥
[मातरम् (mātaram) - mother (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; कृपणाम् (kṛpaṇām) - miserable; पुत्रगृद्धिनीम् (putragṛddhinīm) - eager for (her) son; longing for son; या (yā) - who; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आशास्ते (āśāste) - she hopes for; महत्त्वम् (mahattvam) - greatness; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; more; परैः (paraiḥ) - than others;]
(Mother, and indeed, I grieve (for) the miserable (woman), longing for her son, who of us always hopes for greatness greater than (that) of others.)
And I grieve for our mother too, that miserable woman, longing for her son, who always desires for us a greatness surpassing that of others. (03-176-35)
कथं नु तस्यानाथाया मद्विनाशाद्भुजङ्गम। अफलास्ते भविष्यन्ति मयि सर्वे मनोरथाः ॥०३-१७६-३६॥
kathaṁ nu tasyānāthāyā madvināśādbhujaṅgama। aphalās te bhaviṣyanti mayi sarve manorathāḥ ॥03-176-36॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - her; अनाथायाः (anāthāyāḥ) - destitute one; मद्विनाशात् (madvināśāt) - from my destruction; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent; अफलाः (aphalāḥ) - fruitless; ते (te) - her; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; मयि (mayi) - for me; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मनोरथाः (manorathāḥ) - desires;]
(How indeed her, the destitute one's, from my destruction, O serpent, fruitless will be for me all desires.)
O serpent, how indeed will all the desires of that destitute woman become fruitless for me after my destruction? (03-176-36)
नकुलः सहदेवश्च यमजौ गुरुवर्तिनौ। मद्बाहुबलसंस्तब्धौ नित्यं पुरुषमानिनौ ॥०३-१७६-३७॥
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca yamauj guruvartinau। madbāhubalasaṃstabdhau nityaṃ puruṣamāninau॥03-176-37॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; यमजौ (yamauj) - twin sons of Yama; गुरुवर्तिनौ (guruvartinau) - obedient to the teacher; मद्बाहुबलसंस्तब्धौ (madbāhubalasaṃstabdhau) - proud because of my arm strength; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पुरुषमानिनौ (puruṣamāninau) - priding themselves on manliness;]
(Nakula, Sahadeva and the twins, obedient to the teacher, proud by my arm's strength, always priding in manliness.)
Nakula and Sahadeva, the twin sons of Yama, always obedient to the teacher, are made arrogant by my strength and are forever proud of their manliness. (03-176-37)
निरुत्साहौ भविष्येते भ्रष्टवीर्यपराक्रमौ। मद्विनाशात्परिद्यूनाविति मे वर्तते मतिः ॥०३-१७६-३८॥
nirutsāhau bhaviṣyete bhraṣṭavīryaparākramau. madvināśāt paridyūnāv iti me vartate matiḥ ॥03-176-38॥
[निरुत्साहौ (nirutsāhau) - devoid of enthusiasm; भविष्येते (bhaviṣyete) - (they) will be; भ्रष्टवीर्यपराक्रमौ (bhraṣṭa-vīrya-parākramau) - bereft of strength and valor; मद्विनाशात् (mad-vināśāt) - after my destruction; परिद्यूनौ (paridyūnau) - greatly diminished; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; वर्तते (vartate) - there exists; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(Devoid of enthusiasm, they will be bereft of strength and valor; after my destruction, greatly diminished—thus my thought exists.)
My thought is that, after my destruction, they will become dispirited and lose their strength and valor, greatly diminished. (03-176-38)
एवंविधं बहु तदा विललाप वृकोदरः। भुजङ्गभोगसंरुद्धो नाशकच्च विचेष्टितुम् ॥०३-१७६-३९॥
evaṃ-vidhaṃ bahu tadā vilalāpa vṛkodaraḥ। bhujaṅga-bhoga-saṃruddho nāśakac ca viceṣṭitum ॥03-176-39॥
[एवंविधं (evaṃ-vidham) - of such kind; बहु (bahu) - much; many; repeatedly; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; cried out; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; (Bhīma; proper noun); भुजङ्ग (bhujaṅga) - serpent; भोग (bhoga) - coil; संरुद्धः (saṃruddhaḥ) - restrained; bound; न (na) - not; अशकत् (aśakat) - was able; च (ca) - and; विचेष्टितुम् (viceṣṭitum) - to move; to act;]
(Of such kind, much, then, lamented Vṛkodara; serpent's coil bound (him); not was able and to move.)
At that time, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) lamented much in that way; bound by the coils of the serpent, he was not able to move. (03-176-39)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु कौन्तेय बभूवास्वस्थचेतनः। अनिष्टदर्शनान्घोरानुत्पातान्परिचिन्तयन् ॥०३-१७६-४०॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu kaunteya babhūvāsvasthacetanah। aniṣṭadarśanān ghorān utpātān paricintayan॥03-176-40॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; (son of Dharma; proper noun; masculine nominative singular;) तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; (Arjuna/Yudhiṣṭhira; Vocative singular;) बभूव (babhūva) - became; अस्वस्थचेतनः (asvasthacetanaḥ) - with an uneasy mind; (his mind not at ease;) अनिष्टदर्शनान् (aniṣṭadarśanān) - misfortunes (evil omens); घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible; उत्पातान् (utpātān) - portents; calamities; परिचिन्तयन् (paricintayan) - pondering; (thinking about; reflecting upon;);]
(Yudhiṣṭhira but, O son of Kunti, became with an uneasy mind, pondering misfortunes, terrible portents.)
But Yudhiṣṭhira, O son of Kunti, became uneasy in his mind, pondering the terrible misfortunes and portents. (03-176-40)
दारुणं ह्यशिवं नादं शिवा दक्षिणतः स्थिता। दीप्तायां दिशि वित्रस्ता रौति तस्याश्रमस्य ह ॥०३-१७६-४१॥
dāruṇaṃ hyaśivaṃ nādaṃ śivā dakṣiṇataḥ sthitā। dīptāyāṃ diśi vitrastā rauti tasyāśramasya ha॥03-176-41॥
[दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - terrible; harsh; हि (hi) - indeed; for; अशिवम् (aśivam) - inauspicious; not auspicious; नादम् (nādham) - sound; शिवा (śivā) - Śivā (the auspicious one; proper noun for Pārvatī); दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - from the south; स्थिताः (sthitā) - standing; positioned; दीप्तायाम् (dīptāyām) - shining; blazing; दिशि (diśi) - in the direction; वित्रस्ता (vitrastā) - frightened; रौति (rauti) - cries; wails; तस्य (tasya) - of his; आश्रमस्य (āśramasya) - of the hermitage; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Indeed, Śivā standing to the south, in the blazing direction, frightened, cries a terrible, inauspicious sound, indeed, of his hermitage.)
Indeed, Śivā, standing in the southern blazing quarter, frightened, wails a terrible, inauspicious sound from his hermitage. (03-176-41)
एकपक्षाक्षिचरणा वर्तिका घोरदर्शना। रुधिरं वमन्ती ददृशे प्रत्यादित्यमपस्वरा ॥०३-१७६-४२॥
ekapakṣākṣicaraṇā vartikā ghoradarśanā। rudhiraṃ vamantī dadṛśe pratyādityamapasvarā॥03-176-42॥

प्रववावनिलो रूक्षश्चण्डः शर्करकर्षणः। अपसव्यानि सर्वाणि मृगपक्षिरुतानि च ॥०३-१७६-४३॥
pravavāva nilo rūkṣaś caṇḍaḥ śarkara-karṣaṇaḥ। apasavyāni sarvāṇi mṛga-pakṣi-rutāni ca ॥03-176-43॥

पृष्ठतो वायसः कृष्णो याहि याहीति वाशति। मुहुर्मुहुः प्रस्फुरति दक्षिणोऽस्य भुजस्तथा ॥०३-१७६-४४॥
pṛṣṭhato vāyasaḥ kṛṣṇo yāhi yāhīti vāśati. muhurmuhuḥ prasphurati dakṣiṇo'sya bhujas tathā ॥03-176-44॥

हृदयं चरणश्चापि वामोऽस्य परिवर्तते। सव्यस्याक्ष्णो विकारश्चाप्यनिष्टः समपद्यत ॥०३-१७६-४५॥
hṛdayaṁ caraṇaś cāpi vāmo'sya parivartate। savyasyākṣṇo vikāraścāpyaniṣṭaḥ samapadyata ॥03-176-45॥

स धर्मराजो मेधावी शङ्कमानो महद्भयम्। द्रौपदीं परिपप्रच्छ क्व भीम इति भारत ॥०३-१७६-४६॥
sa dharmarājo medhāvī śaṅkamāno mahadbhayam। draupadīṃ paripapraccha kva bhīma iti bhārata ॥03-176-46॥

(Pañcālī declared to him the long-abiding Vṛkodara. He, the mighty-armed king, set out accompanied by Dhaumya.)
Pañcālī told him about Bhīma, who had been gone for a long time. Then the mighty-armed king departed, accompanied by Dhaumya. (03-176-47)
द्रौपद्या रक्षणं कार्यमित्युवाच धनञ्जयम्। नकुलं सहदेवं च व्यादिदेश द्विजान्प्रति ॥०३-१७६-४८॥
draupadyā rakṣaṇaṃ kāryam ity uvāca dhanañjayam। nakulaṃ sahadevaṃ ca vyādideśa dvijān prati ॥03-176-48॥

स तस्य पदमुन्नीय तस्मादेवाश्रमात्प्रभुः। ददर्श पृथिवीं चिह्नैर्भीमस्य परिचिह्निताम् ॥०३-१७६-४९॥
sa tasya padam unnīya tasmād eva āśramāt prabhuḥ। dadarśa pṛthivīṃ cihnaiḥ bhīmasya paricihnitām ॥03-176-49॥

(He, having traced his footprint from that very hermitage, the lord saw the earth marked all around by the signs of Bhīma.)

धावतस्तस्य वीरस्य मृगार्थे वातरंहसः। ऊरुवातविनिर्भग्नान्द्रुमान्व्यावर्जितान्पथि ॥०३-१७६-५०॥
dhāvatastasya vīrasya mṛgārthe vātaraṃhasaḥ। ūru-vāta-vinirbhagnān drumān vyāvarjitān pathi ॥03-176-50॥

As the hero ran at wind-like speed in pursuit of the deer, trees broken by the force of his thighs and the wind were thrown aside on the path. (3-176-50)
स गत्वा तैस्तदा चिह्नैर्ददर्श गिरिगह्वरे। गृहीतं भुजगेन्द्रेण निश्चेष्टमनुजं तथा ॥०३-१७६-५१॥
sa gatvā tais tadā cihnaiḥ dadarśa girigahvare। gṛhītaṃ bhujagendreṇa niśceṣṭam anujaṃ tathā॥03-176-51॥
