kathaṁ nāgāyutaprāṇo bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। bhayam āhārayat tīvraṁ tasmād ajagarān mune ॥03-175-1॥

O sage, how did Bhīmasena, whose strength is equal to ten thousand elephants and is greatly powerful, experience such intense fear from that python? (03-175-1)
पौलस्त्यं योऽऽह्वयद्युद्धे धनदं बलदर्पितः। नलिन्यां कदनं कृत्वा वराणां यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥०३-१७५-२॥

(The descendant of Pulastya who, proud of strength, challenged Dhanada in battle, having done slaughter of the excellent yakṣas and rākṣasas in the lotus-lake.)

तं शंससि भयाविष्टमापन्नमरिकर्षणम्। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥०३-१७५-३॥

You recount that the destroyer of enemies was overcome by fear and afflicted. I wish to hear this, for I indeed have great curiosity. (03-175-3)

bahvāścarye vane teṣāṃ vasatām ugradhanvinām। prāptānām āśramāt rājan rājarṣeḥ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥03-175-4॥
[बह्वाश्चर्ये (bahvāścarye) - in a place of many wonders; वने (vane) - in the forest; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of those; वसताम् (vasatām) - dwelling; उग्रधन्विनाम् (ugradhanvinām) - of fierce bowmen; प्राप्तानाम् (prāptānām) - having arrived; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - Vṛṣaparvan;]
(In a place of many wonders in the forest, of those fierce bowmen who were dwelling, having arrived from the hermitage, O king, of the royal sage Vṛṣaparvan.)
O king, when those fierce bowmen dwelling in the marvelous forest had come from the hermitage of the royal sage Vṛṣaparvan. (03-175-4)
यदृच्छया धनुष्पाणिर्बद्धखड्गो वृकोदरः। ददर्श तद्वनं रम्यं देवगन्धर्वसेवितम् ॥०३-१७५-५॥
yadṛcchayā dhanuṣpāṇir baddhakhaḍgo vṛkodaraḥ। dadarśa tad vanaṃ ramyaṃ devagandharvasevitam॥03-175-5॥
[यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; धनुष्पाणिः (dhanuṣpāṇiḥ) - with bow in hand; बद्धखड्गः (baddhakhaḍgaḥ) - with sword fastened; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; रम्यम् (ramyam) - beautiful; देवगन्धर्वसेवितम् (devagandharvasevitam) - attended by gods and gandharvas;]
(By chance, with bow in hand, with sword fastened, Vṛkodara saw that beautiful forest attended by gods and gandharvas.)
Vṛkodara, with his bow in hand and sword at his side, happened upon that beautiful forest frequented by gods and gandharvas. (03-175-5)
स ददर्श शुभान्देशान्गिरेर्हिमवतस्तदा। देवर्षिसिद्धचरितानप्सरोगणसेवितान् ॥०३-१७५-६॥

(He saw auspicious regions of the mountain Himavat then, frequented by divine sages and siddhas, attended by groups of apsarases.)

चकोरैश्चक्रवाकैश्च पक्षिभिर्जीवजीवकैः। कोकिलैर्भृङ्गराजैश्च तत्र तत्र विनादितान् ॥०३-१७५-७॥

(By chakora birds, by cakravāka birds, and by birds, by jīvajīvaka birds, by cuckoos, by king of bees (black bees) and there, there, made resound.)
There, everywhere, the place was made resound by chakora birds, cakravāka birds, other birds, jīvajīvaka birds, cuckoos, and black bees. (03-175-7)
नित्यपुष्पफलैर्वृक्षैर्हिमसंस्पर्शकोमलैः। उपेतान्बहुलच्छायैर्मनोनयननन्दनैः ॥०३-१७५-८॥
nityapuṣpaphalair vṛkṣair himasaṃsparśa-komalaiḥ। upetān bahula-chāyaiḥ manonayana-nandanaiḥ॥03-175-8॥
[नित्यपुष्पफलैः (nityapuṣpaphalaiḥ) - with constantly flowered and fruited (ones); वृक्षैः (vṛkṣaiḥ) - with trees; हिमसंस्पर्शकोमलैः (himasaṃsparśa-komalaiḥ) - soft to the touch (as if) by snow; उपेतान् (upetān) - endowed with; बहुलच्छायैः (bahula-chāyaiḥ) - with abundant shade; मनोयनयनन्दनैः (manonayana-nandanaiḥ) - delighting the mind and eyes;]

स सम्पश्यन्गिरिनदीर्वैडूर्यमणिसंनिभैः। सलिलैर्हिमसंस्पर्शैर्हंसकारण्डवायुतैः ॥०३-१७५-९॥
sa sampaśyan giri-nadīr vaiḍūrya-maṇi-saṃnibhaiḥ salilaiḥ hima-saṃsparśaiḥ haṃsa-kāraṇḍava-ayutaiḥ ॥03-175-9॥

(He, seeing the mountain rivers, by waters like beryl jewels, touched by snow, teeming with swans and ducks.)

वनानि देवदारूणां मेघानामिव वागुराः। हरिचन्दनमिश्राणि तुङ्गकालीयकान्यपि ॥०३-१७५-१०॥

मृगयां परिधावन्स समेषु मरुधन्वसु। विध्यन्मृगाञ्शरैः शुद्धैश्चचार सुमहाबलः ॥०३-१७५-११॥
mṛgayāṃ paridhāvans sameṣu marudhanvasu। vidhyan mṛgāñ śaraiḥ śuddhaiś cacāra sumahābalaḥ॥03-175-11॥
[मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - in hunting; परिधावन् (paridhāvan) - running around; समेषु (sameṣu) - in open plains; मरुधन्वसु (marudhanvasu) - in deserts; विध्यन् (vidhyan) - shooting; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; शुद्धैः (śuddhaiḥ) - pure; च (ca) - and; अचार (cacāra) - he moved; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - the one of great strength;]
(In hunting, running around in the open plains and deserts, shooting deer with pure arrows, the one of great strength moved.)

स ददर्श महाकायं भुजङ्गं लोमहर्षणम्। गिरिदुर्गे समापन्नं कायेनावृत्य कन्दरम् ॥०३-१७५-१२॥
sa dadarśa mahākāyaṃ bhujaṅgaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। giridurga samāpannaṃ kāyena āvṛtya kandaram ॥03-175-12॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; महाकायम् (mahākāyam) - with great body; भुजङ्गम् (bhujaṅgam) - serpent; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; गिरिदुर्गे (giridurge) - in the mountain fortress; समापन्नम् (samāpannam) - arrived; कायेन (kāyena) - with (its) body; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - covering; कन्दरम् (kandaram) - the cave;]
(He saw the great-bodied, hair-raising serpent, having arrived in the mountain fortress, covering the cave with (its) body.)
He saw a huge, fearsome serpent in the mountain stronghold, whose massive body covered the cave. (03-175-12)
पर्वताभोगवर्ष्माणं भोगैश्चन्द्रार्कमण्डलैः। चित्राङ्गमजिनैश्चित्रैर्हरिद्रासदृशच्छविम् ॥०३-१७५-१३॥
parvatābhogavarṣmāṇaṃ bhogaiś candrārkamaṇḍalaiḥ। citrāṅgam ajinaiś citrair haridrāsadṛśacchavim ॥03-175-13॥
[पर्वताभोग-वर्ष्माणम् (parvatābhoga-varṣmāṇam) - having the form (size) of a mountain; भोगैः (bhogaiḥ) - by coils; चन्द्र-अर्क-मण्डलैः (candra-arka-maṇḍalaiḥ) - with the discs (circles) of the moon and sun; चित्र-अङ्गम् (citra-aṅgam) - with variegated body; अजिनैः चित्रैः (ajinaiḥ citraiḥ) - with variegated skins; हरिद्रा-सदृश-छविम् (haridrā-sadṛśa-chavim) - having a lustre resembling turmeric;]
(Having the form of a mountain by coils with the discs of the moon and sun, with a variegated body, with variegated skins, having a lustre resembling turmeric.)
It had a form the size of a mountain by its coils, decorated with the circles of the moon and sun, a variegated body, adorned with many-colored skins, and a sheen resembling turmeric. (03-175-13)
गुहाकारेण वक्त्रेण चतुर्दंष्ट्रेण राजता। दीप्ताक्षेणातिताम्रेण लिहन्तं सृक्किणी मुहुः ॥०३-१७५-१४॥
guhākāreṇa vaktreṇa caturdaṃṣṭreṇa rājatā। dīptākṣeṇātitāmreṇa lihantaṃ sṛkkiṇī muhuḥ ॥03-175-14॥

त्रासनं सर्वभूतानां कालान्तकयमोपमम्। निःश्वासक्ष्वेडनादेन भर्त्सयन्तमिव स्थितम् ॥०३-१७५-१५॥

स भीमं सहसाभ्येत्य पृदाकुः क्षुधितो भृशम्। जग्राहाजगरो ग्राहो भुजयोरुभयोर्बलात् ॥०३-१७५-१६॥
sa bhīmaṃ sahasābhyetya pṛdākuḥ kṣudhito bhṛśam। jagrāhājagaro grāho bhujayor ubhayor balāt॥03-175-16॥
[स (sa) - he; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma (the name); सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; पृदाकुः (pṛdākuḥ) - Pṛdākuḥ (proper noun, name of a serpent); क्षुधितः (kṣudhitaḥ) - hungry; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; अजगरः (ajagaraḥ) - the python; ग्राहः (grāhaḥ) - seizer; भुजयोः (bhujayoḥ) - of the two arms; उभयोः (ubhayor) - of both; बलात् (balāt) - with force;]
(He, Bhīma, suddenly having approached, Pṛdākuḥ, exceedingly hungry, the python, the seizer, seized of the two arms of both with force.)
That Pṛdākuḥ, exceedingly hungry, suddenly approached Bhīma and, as a powerful python, forcefully seized both of his arms. (03-175-16)
तेन संस्पृष्टमात्रस्य भिमसेनस्य वै तदा। सञ्ज्ञा मुमोह सहसा वरदानेन तस्य ह ॥०३-१७५-१७॥
tena saṁspṛṣṭa-mātrasya bhīmasenasya vai tadā। sañjñā mumoha sahasā varadānena tasya ha ॥03-175-17॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; संस्पृष्टमात्रस्य (saṁspṛṣṭa-mātrasya) - having just been touched; भिमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; सञ्ज्ञा (sañjñā) - consciousness; मुमोह (mumoha) - became confused; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the boon; तस्य (tasya) - his; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By him, having just been touched, of Bhīmasena indeed then, consciousness became confused suddenly by his boon indeed.)
Then, as soon as Bhīmasena was touched by him, his consciousness suddenly became bewildered by the boon he had granted. (03-175-17)
दश नागसहस्राणि धारयन्ति हि यद्बलम्। तद्बलं भीमसेनस्य भुजयोरसमं परैः ॥०३-१७५-१८॥
daśa nāgasaḥasrāṇi dhārayanti hi yadbalam। tadbalaṃ bhīmasenasya bhujayor asamaṃ paraiḥ॥03-175-18॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; नागसहस्राणि (nāgasaḥasrāṇi) - thousand elephants; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - endure; हि (hi) - indeed; यद्बलम् (yadbalam) - which strength; तद्बलम् (tadbalaṃ) - that strength; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; भुयोः (bhujayoḥ) - of the two arms; असमम् (asamam) - unequalled; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(Ten thousand elephants indeed endure which strength. That strength of Bhīmasena's two arms by others is unequalled.)
The strength which ten thousand elephants indeed possess is unequalled by others to the might of Bhīmasena's two arms. (3-175-18)
स तेजस्वी तथा तेन भुजगेन वशीकृतः। विस्फुरञ्शनकैर्भीमो न शशाक विचेष्टितुम् ॥०३-१७५-१९॥
sa tejasvī tathā tena bhujagena vaśīkṛtaḥ। visphuran śanakaiḥ bhīmaḥ na śaśāka viceṣṭitum ॥03-175-19॥
[स (sa) - he; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; powerful; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; तेन (tena) - by him; भुजगेन (bhujagena) - by the serpent; वशीकृतः (vaśīkṛtaḥ) - subdued; overpowered; विस्फुरञ् (visphuran) - moving; twitching; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; gradually; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; विचेष्टितुम् (viceṣṭitum) - to move;]
(He, the powerful one, thus overpowered by that serpent, moving slowly and twitching, Bhima was not able to move.)
Bhima, though powerful, being subdued by that serpent, and twitching slowly, was unable to move. (03-175-19)
नागायुतसमप्राणः सिंहस्कन्धो महाभुजः। गृहीतो व्यजहात्सत्त्वं वरदानेन मोहितः ॥०३-१७५-२०॥
nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ siṃhaskandho mahābhujaḥ। gṛhīto vyajahātsattvaṃ varadānena mohitaḥ ॥03-175-20॥
[नागायुतसमप्राणः (nāgāyuta-samaprāṇaḥ) - having strength equal to a multitude of elephants; सिंहस्कन्धः (siṃha-skandhaḥ) - lion-shouldered; महाभुजः (mahā-bhujaḥ) - mighty-armed; गृहीतः (gṛhītaḥ) - having been seized; व्यजहात् (vyajahāt) - gave up; सत्त्वं (sattvam) - spirit; वरदानेन (vara-dānena) - by the boon; मोहितः (mohitaḥ) - bewildered;]
(Having strength equal to a multitude of elephants, lion-shouldered, mighty-armed, having been seized, gave up spirit, by the boon, bewildered.)
With the strength of a multitude of elephants, lion-like shoulders, and mighty arms, when seized he, bewildered by the boon, gave up his life. (03-175-20)
स हि प्रयत्नमकरोत्तीव्रमात्मविमोक्षणे। न चैनमशकद्वीरः कथञ्चित्प्रतिबाधितुम् ॥०३-१७५-२१॥
sa hi prayatnam akarot tīvram ātma-vimokṣaṇe। na ca enam aśakat vīraḥ kathañcit pratibādhitum ॥03-175-21॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रयत्नम् (prayatnam) - effort; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; आत्मविमोक्षणे (ātma-vimokṣaṇe) - for his own liberation; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अशकत् (aśakat) - was able; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - in any way; प्रतिबाधितुम् (pratibādhitum) - to obstruct;]
(He indeed made intense effort for his own liberation. And the hero was not able to obstruct him in any way.)
He indeed put forth great effort to free himself, and the hero could not obstruct him by any means. (03-175-21)
