भवानेतादृशो लोके वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः। ब्रूहि किं कुर्वतः कर्म भवेद्गतिरनुत्तमा ॥०३-१७८-१॥
bhavānetādṛśo loke vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ। brūhi kiṃ kurvataḥ karma bhavedgatiranuttamā ॥03-178-1॥

(You, such as this in the world, expert in Veda and Vedāṅgas, tell what action, being done, would result in the unsurpassed goal.)
You, being such a person in this world, skilled in the Veda and Vedāṅgas, tell me what action, if performed, would lead to the highest goal. (03-178-1)

पात्रे दत्त्वा प्रियाण्युक्त्वा सत्यमुक्त्वा च भारत। अहिंसानिरतः स्वर्गं गच्छेदिति मतिर्मम ॥०३-१७८-२॥
pātre dattvā priyāṇy uktvā satyam uktvā ca bhārata। ahiṃsā-nirataḥ svargaṃ gacched iti matir mama॥03-178-2॥

(To the worthy person having given, pleasant words having spoken, truth having spoken, and, O Bhārata, engaged in non-injury, to heaven would go — thus my thought.)
O Bhārata, my thought is: giving to the worthy, speaking pleasant words and truth, and being devoted to non-violence, one would go to heaven. (03-178-2)

dānādvā sarpa satyādvā kimato guru dṛśyate। ahiṃsāpriyayoścaiva gurulāghavam ucyatām ॥03-178-3॥
[दानात् वा (dānāt vā) - from gift or; सर्प (sarpa) - from serpent; सत्यात् वा (satyāt vā) - from truth or; किम् अतो (kim ato) - what from this; गुरु (guru) - weighty; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; अहिंसा-प्रिययोः च एव (ahiṃsā-priyayoḥ ca eva) - of non-violence and affection, and indeed; गुरु-लाघवम् (guru-lāghavam) - greater or lesser importance; उच्यताम् (ucyatām) - let it be stated;]
(From gift or from serpent, from truth or—what from this—is weightiness seen? Of non-violence and affection, indeed, let the greater or lesser importance be stated.)
Is greatness discerned by giving, by the serpent, or by truth? Let it then be stated which is greater or lesser between non-violence and affection. (03-178-3)

दाने रतत्वं सत्यं च अहिंसा प्रियमेव च। एषां कार्यगरीयस्त्वाद्दृश्यते गुरुलाघवम् ॥०३-१७८-४॥

[दाने (dāne) - in charity; रतत्वं (ratatvaṃ) - state of being devoted; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - non-injury; प्रियम् (priyam) - what is dear; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; कार्य (kārya) - of act; गरीयस्त्वात् (garīyatvāt) - because of superiority (being weightier); दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; गुरुलाघवम् (guru-lāghavam) - weight and lightness;]
(In charity, the state of being devoted; truth and non-injury, and what is dear indeed; of these, because of the superiority of the act, is seen weight and lightness.)
With regard to charity, devotion, truthfulness, non-injury, and what is dear, among these, degrees of importance are seen according to the greatness of the act. (03-178-4)
कस्माच्चिद्दानयोगाद्धि सत्यमेव विशिष्यते। सत्यवाक्याच्च राजेन्द्र किञ्चिद्दानं विशिष्यते ॥०३-१७८-५॥
kasmācciddānayogāddhi satyameva viśiṣyate। satyavākyācca rājendra kiñciddānaṃ viśiṣyate ॥03-178-5॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from some; चित् (cit) - a little; दानयोगात् (dānayogāt) - from the bestowal of gifts; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; एव (eva) - only; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished; सत्यवाक्यात् (satyavākyāt) - from true words; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished;]
(From some slight connection with bestowal of gifts indeed, truth alone is distinguished. From words of truth also, O king, a slight gift is distinguished.)
Indeed, O king, truth is superior even to some act of giving; and even a small gift is superior to merely speaking truth. (03-178-5)
एवमेव महेष्वास प्रियवाक्यान्महीपते। अहिंसा दृश्यते गुर्वी ततश्च प्रियमिष्यते ॥०३-१७८-६॥
evam-eva maheṣvāsa priyavākyān mahīpate. ahiṁsā dṛśyate gurvī tataś-ca priyam iṣyate ॥03-178-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; महेष्वास (maheṣvāsa) - O great archer; प्रियवाक्यान् (priyavākyān) - pleasant words; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth; अहिंसा (ahiṁsā) - non-injury; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; गुर्वी (gurvī) - weighty; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired;]
(Thus indeed, O great archer, by pleasant words, O lord of the earth, non-injury is seen to be weighty; then, dear is desired.)
In this way, O great archer, pleasant words, O lord of the earth, make non-violence appear significant; thus, what is dear is chosen. (03-178-6)
एवमेतद्भवेद्राजन्कार्यापेक्षमनन्तरम्। यदभिप्रेतमन्यत्ते ब्रूहि यावद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥०३-१७८-७॥
evam etad bhaved rājan kāryāpekṣam anantaram। yad abhipretam anyat te brūhi yāvat bravīmy aham ॥03-178-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतद् (etad) - this; भवेत् (bhavet) - may it be; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कार्यापेक्षम् (kāryāpekṣam) - what is needed for the task; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - just after; यत् (yat) - which; अभिप्रेतम् (abhipretam) - desired; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; ते (te) - by you; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Thus this may be, O king, what is needed for the task just after. Which else desired by you, speak as much as I say.)
Let it be thus, O king, whatever else you desire for the task hereafter, tell me so long as I may tell you. (03-178-7)

[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; गतिः (gatiḥ) - attainment; सर्प (sarpa) - O serpent; कर्मणां (karmaṇāṁ) - of actions; च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṁ) - result; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain; अशरीरस्य (aśarīrasya) - of the disembodied; दृश्येत (dṛśyeta) - is seen; विषयान् (viṣayān) - objects; च (ca) - and; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(How in heaven attainment, O serpent, and of actions the result is certain; of the disembodied is seen the objects, and tell to me.)
O serpent, how is attainment in heaven, and how is the result of actions certain? How are objects perceived by one without a body? Tell me about this. (03-178-8)

तिस्रो वै गतयो राजन्परिदृष्टाः स्वकर्मभिः। मानुष्यं स्वर्गवासश्च तिर्यग्योनिश्च तत्त्रिधा ॥०३-१७८-९॥
tisro vai gatayo rājan paridṛṣṭāḥ svakarmabhiḥ. mānuṣyaṃ svargavāsaś ca tiryagyoniś ca tat tridhā ॥03-178-9॥
[तिस्रो (tisro) - three (feminine nominative plural); वै (vai) - indeed; गतयः (gatayaḥ) - destinations; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परिदृष्टाः (paridṛṣṭāḥ) - have been considered; स्वकर्मभिः (svakarmabhiḥ) - by one's own actions; मानुष्यं (mānuṣyam) - human existence; स्वर्गवासः (svargavāsaḥ) - abode in heaven; च (ca) - and; तिर्यग्योनिः (tiryagyoniḥ) - animal womb; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; त्रिधा (tridhā) - threefold;]
(Three indeed destinations, O king, have been considered by one's own actions. Human existence, abode in heaven, and animal womb—that threefold.)
O king, three destinations have indeed been recognized based on one's own actions: human birth, residence in heaven, and animal birth—thus, they are threefold. (03-178-9)
तत्र वै मानुषाल्लोकाद्दानादिभिरतन्द्रितः। अहिंसार्थसमायुक्तैः कारणैः स्वर्गमश्नुते ॥०३-१७८-१०॥
tatra vai mānuṣāllokāddānādibhiratandritaḥ. ahiṃsārthasamāyuktaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ svargamaśnute ॥03-178-10॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; मानुषाल्लोकात् (mānuṣāl lokāt) - from the human world; दानादिभिः (dānādibhiḥ) - by acts such as giving; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - untiring; अहिंसा-अर्थ-समायुक्तैः (ahiṃsā-artha-samāyuktaiḥ) - joined with the meaning of non-violence; कारणैः (kāraṇaiḥ) - by means; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(There indeed from the human world, by acts such as giving, untiring, by means joined with the purpose of non-violence, he attains heaven.)
There indeed, one who is untiring in giving and similar actions, paired with acts inspired by non-violence, attains heaven from the human world. (03-178-10)
विपरीतैश्च राजेन्द्र कारणैर्मानुषो भवेत्। तिर्यग्योनिस्तथा तात विशेषश्चात्र वक्ष्यते ॥०३-१७८-११॥
viparītaiś ca rājendra kāraṇair mānuṣo bhavet। tiryagyonis tathā tāta viśeṣaś cātra vakṣyate ॥03-178-11॥

कामक्रोधसमायुक्तो हिंसालोभसमन्वितः। मनुष्यत्वात्परिभ्रष्टस्तिर्यग्योनौ प्रसूयते ॥०३-१७८-१२॥
kāmakrodhasamāyukto hiṁsālobhasamanvitaḥ। manuṣyatvāt paribhraṣṭas tiryag-yonau prasūyate॥03-178-12॥

तिर्यग्योन्यां पृथग्भावो मनुष्यत्वे विधीयते। गवादिभ्यस्तथाश्वेभ्यो देवत्वमपि दृश्यते ॥०३-१७८-१३॥
tiryagyonyāṃ pṛthagbhāvo manuṣyatve vidhīyate. gavādibhyas tathāśvebhyo devatvam api dṛśyate ॥03-178-13॥

(He, this, all these courses, the creature moves, having actions. In the eternal, the great, and the self he establishes, O king.)
O king, this being, engaged in action, moves through all these courses. In the eternal and the great, he establishes himself. (03-178-14)
जातो जातश्च बलवान्भुङ्क्ते चात्मा स देहवान्। फलार्थस्तात निष्पृक्तः प्रजालक्षणभावनः ॥०३-१७८-१५॥
jāto jātaś ca balavān bhuṅkte cātmā sa dehavān. phalārthas tāta niṣpṛktaḥ prajālakṣaṇabhāvanaḥ ॥03-178-15॥
[जातः (jātaḥ) - born; जातश्च (jātaś ca) - born and; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; च (ca) - and; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; स (sa) - he; देहवान् (dehavān) - possessing a body; फलार्थः (phalārthaḥ) - intent on fruit; तात (tāta) - O dear; निष्पृक्तः (niṣpṛktaḥ) - not attached; प्रजा-लक्षण-भावनः (prajā-lakṣaṇa-bhāvanaḥ) - contemplating the characteristics of progeny;]
(Born, born and, strong, enjoys, and the self, he, possessing a body, intent on fruit, O dear, not attached, contemplating the characteristics of progeny.)
Being born and reborn, the strong embodied self enjoys; intent on the fruits, O dear, but not attached, considering the characteristics of progeny. (03-178-15)

(In sound, in touch, and in form, and likewise in taste and smell; its abiding place undistracted, tell, O serpent, truly.)
O serpent, tell me truly, what is the undistracted seat of all these—sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. (03-178-16)
किं न गृह्णासि विषयान्युगपत्त्वं महामते। एतावदुच्यतां चोक्तं सर्वं पन्नगसत्तम ॥०३-१७८-१७॥
kiṁ na gṛhṇāsi viṣayānyugapattvaṁ mahāmate। etāvaducyatāṁ coktaṁ sarvaṁ pannagasattama ॥03-178-17॥

(What, do you not grasp the objects' simultaneousness, O great-minded? Let this much be said, and all that has been spoken, O best of serpents.)

yad-ātmadravyam-āyuṣman-dehasaṃśrayaṇānvitam। karaṇādhiṣṭhitaṃ bhogān-upabhunkte yathāvidhi ॥03-178-18॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; आत्मद्रव्यम् (ātmadravyam) - inner substance; self-matter; आयुष्मन् (āyuṣman) - O long-lived one; देहसंश्रयणान्वितम् (dehasaṃśrayaṇānvitam) - connected with the body's dwelling; करणाधिष्ठितम् (karaṇādhiṣṭhitam) - governed by the senses; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; उपभुङ्क्ते (upabhunkte) - experiences; enjoys; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule;]
(Whatever inner substance, O long-lived one, connected with the body's dwelling, governed by the senses, enjoys enjoyments according to the rule.)
O long-lived one, whatever inner essence, associated with the body and under the control of the senses, experiences enjoyments as prescribed. (03-178-18)
ज्ञानं चैवात्र बुद्धिश्च मनश्च भरतर्षभ। तस्य भोगाधिकरणे करणानि निबोध मे ॥०३-१७८-१९॥
jñānaṃ caivātra buddhiś ca manaś ca bharatarṣabha। tasya bhogādhikaraṇe karaṇāni nibodha me ॥03-178-19॥

(Knowledge and indeed here intellect and mind and, O best of Bharatas, its instruments in the function of enjoyment, understand from me.)
O best of the Bharatas, understand from me the instruments—knowledge, intellect, and mind—here, which function in enjoyment. (03-178-19)
मनसा तात पर्येति क्रमशो विषयानिमान्। विषयायतनस्थेन भूतात्मा क्षेत्रनिःसृतः ॥०३-१७८-२०॥
manasā tāta paryeti kramaśo viṣayān imān। viṣayāyatana-sthena bhūtātmā kṣetra-niḥsṛtaḥ ॥03-178-20॥

(By the mind, O dear one, goes about sequentially these objects. By being situated in the field of objects, the self of beings, having departed from the body.)
O dear one, by the mind the self moves among these objects step by step; the embodied soul, situated in the field of objects, has departed from the body. (03-178-20)
अत्र चापि नरव्याघ्र मनो जन्तोर्विधीयते। तस्माद्युगपदस्यात्र ग्रहणं नोपपद्यते ॥०३-१७८-२१॥
atra cāpi naravyāghra mano jantor vidhīyate। tasmād yugapadasyātra grahaṇaṃ nopapadyate॥03-178-21॥

बुद्धिरात्मानुगा तात उत्पातेन विधीयते। तदाश्रिता हि सञ्ज्ञैषा विधिस्तस्यैषणे भवेत् ॥०३-१७८-२५॥
buddhirātmānugā tāta utpātena vidhīyate. tadāśritā hi sañjñaiṣā vidhistasyaiṣaṇe bhavet ॥03-178-25॥
[बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; आत्मा-अनुगा (ātmā-anugā) - following the self; तात (tāta) - dear one; उत्पातेन (utpātena) - by upheaval; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is prescribed; तद्-आश्रिता (tad-āśritā) - depending on that; हि (hi) - indeed; सञ्ज्ञा (sañjñā) - designation; एषा (eṣā) - this; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule; तस्य (tasya) - of that; एषणे (eṣaṇe) - in desire; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Understanding following the self, dear one, is prescribed by upheaval. Depending on that indeed this designation, as a rule, would be in that desire.)
Dear one, the understanding that follows the self is prescribed in times of upheaval; truly, the designation depends on that, and this rule applies where there is such a desire. (03-178-25)
बुद्धेर्गुणविधिर्नास्ति मनस्तु गुणवद्भवेत्। बुद्धिरुत्पद्यते कार्ये मनस्तूत्पन्नमेव हि ॥०३-१७८-२६॥
buddher guṇavidhir nāsti manas tu guṇavad bhavet। buddhir utpadyate kārye manas tūtpannam eva hi॥03-178-26॥
[बुद्धेः (buddheḥ) - of intellect; गुणविधिः (guṇavidhiḥ) - the state of attributes; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तु (tu) - but; गुणवत् (guṇavat) - possessing qualities; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; उत्पद्यते (utpadyate) - arises; कार्ये (kārye) - in action; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तु (tu) - but; उत्पन्नम् (utpannam) - that which is arisen; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely;]
(Of intellect, attribute-state is not; mind, however, may be possessing qualities. Intellect arises in action; mind, indeed, is only that which has arisen surely.)
The intellect does not possess a state of qualities, but the mind may have qualities. The intellect arises in regard to action, but mind is indeed only that which has arisen. (03-178-26)
एतद्विशेषणं तात मनोबुद्ध्योर्मयेरितम्। त्वमप्यत्राभिसम्बुद्धः कथं वा मन्यते भवान् ॥०३-१७८-२७॥
etadviśeṣaṇaṃ tāta manobuddhyormayeritam। tvamapyatrābhisambuddhaḥ kathaṃ vā manyate bhavān ॥03-178-27॥

aho buddhimatāṃ śreṣṭha śubhā buddhir iyaṃ tava। viditaṃ veditavyaṃ te kasmān mām anupṛcchasi॥03-178-28॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; बुद्धिमतां (buddhimatām) - of the wise; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; तव (tava) - your; विदितम् (viditam) - known; वेदितव्यम् (veditavyam) - to be known; ते (te) - to you; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; माम् (mām) - me; अनुपृच्छसि (anupṛcchasi) - you inquire;]
(Indeed, O best of the wise, this auspicious intellect is yours; what is to be known is known to you. Why do you inquire of me?)
Indeed, O best among the wise, this auspicious intellect is yours; whatever should be known is known to you. Why, then, do you question me? (03-178-28)
सर्वज्ञं त्वां कथं मोह आविशत्स्वर्गवासिनम्। एवमद्भुतकर्माणमिति मे संशयो महान् ॥०३-१७८-२९॥
sarvajñaṃ tvāṃ kathaṃ moha āviśat svargavāsinam. evam adbhutakarmāṇam iti me saṃśayo mahān ॥03-178-29॥

(All-knowing you how delusion entered heavenly-dwelling; thus wondrous-deeds thus my doubt great.)
How did delusion enter you, one who is all-knowing and dwelling in heaven? This is my great doubt, seeing your wondrous deeds. (03-178-29)

सुप्रज्ञमपि चेच्छूरमृद्धिर्मोहयते नरम्। वर्तमानः सुखे सर्वो नावैतीति मतिर्मम ॥०३-१७८-३०॥
suprajñam api cet śūram ṛddhir mohāyate naram। vartamānaḥ sukhe sarvo na avaiti iti matir mama ॥03-178-30॥
[सुप्रज्ञम् (suprajñam) - very wise; अपि (api) - even; चेत् (cet) - if; शूरम् (śūram) - hero; ऋद्धिः (ṛddhiḥ) - prosperity; मोहयते (mohayate) - deludes; नरम् (naram) - man; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - present; सुखे (sukhe) - in happiness; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; न (na) - not; अवैति (avaiti) - realizes; इति (iti) - thus; मतिः (matiḥ) - the view; मम (mama) - my;]
(Even a very wise, if a hero, prosperity deludes a man. Present in happiness, everyone not realizes thus, my view.)
Even a very wise and valiant man is deluded by prosperity; when present in happiness, no one realizes it—that is my opinion. (03-178-30)
सोऽहमैश्वर्यमोहेन मदाविष्टो युधिष्ठिर। पतितः प्रतिसम्बुद्धस्त्वां तु सम्बोधयाम्यहम् ॥०३-१७८-३१॥
so'ham aiśvaryamohena madāviṣṭo yudhiṣṭhira। patitaḥ pratisambuddhas tvāṃ tu saṃbodhayāmy aham ॥03-178-31॥
[सः (so) (saḥ) - he; (I) अहम् (aham) (aham) - I; ऐश्वर्य-मोहेन (aiśvarya-mohena) (aiśvarya-mohena) - by the delusion of sovereignty/power; मदाविष्टः (madāviṣṭaḥ) (madāviṣṭaḥ) - intoxicated; overcome with pride; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; पतितः (patitaḥ) (patitaḥ) - fallen; प्रति-सम्बुद्धः (pratisambuddhaḥ) (pratisambuddhaḥ) - having become aware again; त्वाम् (tvām) (tvām) - you; तु (tu) (tu) - but; सम्बोधयामि (saṃbodhayāmi) (saṃbodhayāmi) - I awaken; I inform; अहम् (aham) (aham) - I;]
(He, I, by the delusion of sovereignty, intoxicated (with pride), O Yudhiṣṭhira, having fallen, having become aware again, you but I awaken (inform), I.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, I, having been intoxicated by the delusion of sovereignty, fell; but now, having regained awareness, I awaken (inform) you. (03-178-31)
कृतं कार्यं महाराज त्वया मम परन्तप। क्षीणः शापः सुकृच्छ्रो मे त्वया सम्भाष्य साधुना ॥०३-१७८-३२॥
kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ mahārāja tvayā mama parantapa। kṣīṇaḥ śāpaḥ sukṛcchro me tvayā sambhāṣya sādhuṇā ॥03-178-32॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - done; कार्यम् (kāryam) - the task; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मम (mama) - for me; परन्तप (parantapa) - O tormentor of foes; क्षीणः (kṣīṇaḥ) - dissipated; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; सुकृच्छ्रः (sukṛcchraḥ) - hard; मे (me) - my; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सम्भाष्य (sambhāṣya) - having conversed; साधुना (sādhuṇā) - by the virtuous one;]
(The task has been done, O great king, by you for me, O tormentor of foes. The hard curse of mine has dissipated, by you, having conversed with the virtuous one.)
O great king, you have accomplished the task for me, O subduer of foes. My severe curse has been dispelled by you, through your virtuous conversation. (03-178-32)
अहं हि दिवि दिव्येन विमानेन चरन्पुरा। अभिमानेन मत्तः सन्कञ्चिन्नान्यमचिन्तयम् ॥०३-१७८-३३॥
ahaṃ hi divi divyena vimānena caran purā। abhimānena mattaḥ san kañ-cin nānyam acintayam॥03-178-33॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; दिव्येन (divyena) - by celestial; विमानेन (vimānena) - vehicle; चरन् (caran) - moving; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभिमानेन (abhimānena) - with pride; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; सन् (san) - being; कञ्चित् (kañ-cit) - even a little; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; अचिन्तयम् (acintayam) - did I consider;]
(I indeed in heaven by celestial vehicle moving formerly, with pride intoxicated being, even a little not another did I consider.)
Indeed, I, formerly moving in heaven by a celestial vehicle, being intoxicated with pride, did not consider anyone else even a little. (03-178-33)
ब्रह्मर्षिदेवगन्धर्वयक्षराक्षसकिंनराः। करान्मम प्रयच्छन्ति सर्वे त्रैलोक्यवासिनः ॥०३-१७८-३४॥
brahmarṣidevagandharvayakṣarākṣasakiṁnarāḥ। karān mama prayacchanti sarve trailokyavāsinaḥ॥03-178-34॥
[ब्रह्मर्षि (brahmarṣi) - brahma-rishi; देव (deva) - deva; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - gandharva; यक्ष (yakṣa) - yaksha; राक्षस (rākṣasa) - rakshasa; किंनराः (kiṁnarāḥ) - kinnaras; करान् (karān) - tributes; मम (mama) - to me; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्रैलोक्यवासिनः (trailokyavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the three worlds;]
(Brahma-rishis, devas, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, kinnaras, tributes to me give, all inhabitants of the three worlds.)
All the brahma-rishis, devas, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, and kinnaras—all inhabitants of the three worlds—give tributes to me. (03-178-34)
चक्षुषा यं प्रपश्यामि प्राणिनं पृथिवीपते। तस्य तेजो हराम्याशु तद्धि दृष्टिबलं मम ॥०३-१७८-३५॥
cakṣuṣā yaṃ prapaśyāmi prāṇinaṃ pṛthivīpate। tasya tejo harāmyāśu taddhi dṛṣṭibalaṃ mama ॥03-178-35॥
[चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with the eye; यं (yaṃ) - whom; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; प्राणिनं (prāṇinam) - the living being; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; तस्य (tasya) - his; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; हरामि (harāmi) - I take away; आशु (āśu) - quickly; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; दृष्टिबलम् (dṛṣṭibalam) - strength of vision; मम (mama) - my;]
(With the eye, whom I see, the living being, O lord of the earth, his energy I take away quickly; that indeed is the strength of my sight.)
O lord of the earth, whomever living being I look at with my eyes, I quickly take away his energy; for that is truly the power of my vision. (03-178-35)
ब्रह्मर्षीणां सहस्रं हि उवाह शिबिकां मम। स मामपनयो राजन्भ्रंशयामास वै श्रियः ॥०३-१७८-३६॥
brahmarṣīṇāṃ sahasraṃ hi uvāha śibikāṃ mama। sa mām apanayo rājan bhraṃśayāmāsa vai śriyaḥ ॥03-178-36॥
[ब्रह्मर्षीणां (brahmarṣīṇāṃ) - of the brahmarṣis; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; हि (hi) - indeed; उवाह (uvāha) - carried; शिबिकां (śibikāṃ) - the palanquin; मम (mama) - my; स (sa) - he; मामपनयः (mām apanayaḥ) - removed me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भ्रंशयामास (bhraṃśayāmāsa) - caused (me) to fall; वै (vai) - indeed; श्रियः (śriyaḥ) - prosperity;]
(A thousand of the brahmarṣis indeed carried my palanquin. He removed me, O king, indeed caused (me) to fall from prosperity.)
A thousand brahmarṣis once carried my palanquin. But he, O king, removed me and indeed deprived me of my prosperity. (03-178-36)
तत्र ह्यगस्त्यः पादेन वहन्स्पृष्टो मया मुनिः। अदृष्टेन ततोऽस्म्युक्तो ध्वंस सर्पेति वै रुषा ॥०३-१७८-३७॥
tatra hy agastyaḥ pādena vahan spṛṣṭo mayā muniḥ। adṛṣṭena tato 'smy ukto dhvaṁsa sarpeti vai ruṣā ॥03-178-37॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; हि (hi) - indeed; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; पादेन (pādena) - with (his) foot; वहन् (vahan) - carrying; स्पृष्टः (spṛṣṭaḥ) - touched; मया (mayā) - by me; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; अदृष्टेन (adṛṣṭena) - by the unseen (power); ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; ध्वंस (dhvaṁsa) - be destroyed; सर्प (sarpa) - O serpent; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger;]
(There indeed Agastya, carrying (me), touched (by) my foot, the sage, by the unseen (force), then I am addressed: "Be destroyed, O serpent"— thus, indeed, with anger.)
There, indeed, while carrying me, Agastya the sage was touched by my foot; then, through an unseen force, I was addressed angrily by him: "Be destroyed, O serpent." (03-178-37)
ततस्तस्माद्विमानाग्रात्प्रच्युतश्च्युतभूषणः। प्रपतन्बुबुधेऽऽत्मानं व्यालीभूतमधोमुखम् ॥०३-१७८-३८॥
tatas tasmād vimānāgrāt pracyutaś cyuta-bhūṣaṇaḥ। prapatan bubudhe''tmānaṁ vyāli-bhūtaṁ adho-mukham ॥03-178-38॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; विमानाग्रात् (vimānāgrāt) - from the top of the aerial car; प्रच्युतः (pracyutaḥ) - fallen; च्युत (cyuta) - missing; भूषणः (bhūṣaṇaḥ) - ornament; प्रपतन् (prapatan) - falling; बुबुधे (bubudhe) - perceived; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; व्यालीभूतम् (vyāli-bhūtam) - turned into a serpent; अधोमुखम् (adho-mukham) - with face downward;]
(Then from that (top of the) aerial car, fallen and bereft of ornaments, falling, he perceived himself (as) turned into a serpent, with face downward.)
Then, having fallen from the top of that aerial car, deprived of his ornaments, as he was falling, he realized that he himself had become a serpent with his face turned downwards. (03-178-38)
अयाचं तमहं विप्रं शापस्यान्तो भवेदिति। अज्ञानात्सम्प्रवृत्तस्य भगवन्क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-१७८-३९॥
ayācaṃ tam ahaṃ vipraṃ śāpasya-anto bhaved iti। ajñānāt sampravṛttasya bhagavan kṣantum arhasi॥03-178-39॥
[अयाचं (ayācam) - not begged; (not requested;) तम् (tam) - him; (that;) अहं (ahaṃ) - I; (myself;) विप्रं (vipraṃ) - Brahmin; (sage;) शापस्य (śāpasya) - of the curse; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; (might occur;) इति (iti) - thus; (so;) अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; सम्प्रवृत्तस्य (sampravṛttasya) - having been undertaken; (having arisen;) भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; (you should;);]
(Not begged him I, the Brahmin, the curse's end may be, thus. From ignorance, having been undertaken, O Lord, to forgive, you ought.)
I did not request that Brahmin; let there be an end to the curse. O Lord, since this was undertaken out of ignorance, you should forgive.
ततः स मामुवाचेदं प्रपतन्तं कृपान्वितः। युधिष्ठिरो धर्मराजः शापात्त्वां मोक्षयिष्यति ॥०३-१७८-४०॥
tataḥ sa mām uvāca idaṃ prapatantaṃ kṛpā-anvitaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dharma-rājaḥ śāpāt tvām mokṣayiṣyati॥03-178-40॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रपतन्तं (prapatantaṃ) - falling (down); कृपान्वितः (kṛpā-anvitaḥ) - filled with compassion; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; धर्मराजः (dharma-rājaḥ) - king of dharma; शापात् (śāpāt) - from (a) curse; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मोक्षयिष्यति (mokṣayiṣyati) - will liberate;]
(Then he, filled with compassion, said this to me, who was falling: "Yudhiṣṭhira, king of dharma, will liberate you from (the) curse." (03-178-40))
Then, filled with compassion, he said this to me as I was falling: "Yudhiṣṭhira, king of dharma, will release you from the curse." (03-178-40)
अभिमानस्य घोरस्य बलस्य च नराधिप। फले क्षीणे महाराज फलं पुण्यमवाप्स्यसि ॥०३-१७८-४१॥
abhimānasya ghorasya balasya ca narādhipa। phale kṣīṇe mahārāja phalaṃ puṇyam avāpsyasi ॥03-178-41॥
[अभिमानस्य (abhimānasya) - of pride; घोरस्य (ghorasya) - of terrible; बलस्य (balasya) - of strength; च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men; फले (phale) - in the fruit; क्षीणे (kṣīṇe) - when diminished; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; फलं (phalam) - fruit; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
(O ruler of men, of pride, of terrible, of strength, and; in the fruit, when diminished, O great king, fruit holy you will obtain.)
O ruler of men, after the fruits of terrible pride and strength are diminished, O great king, you will obtain the virtuous fruit. (03-178-41)
ततो मे विस्मयो जातस्तद्दृष्ट्वा तपसो बलम्। ब्रह्म च ब्राह्मणत्वं च येन त्वाहमचूचुदम् ॥०३-१७८-४२॥
tato me vismayo jātas taddṛṣṭvā tapaso balam. brahma ca brāhmaṇatvaṃ ca yena tvāham acūcudam ॥03-178-42॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - to me; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - astonishment; जातः (jātaḥ) - arose; तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तपसो (tapasaḥ) - of penance; बलम् (balam) - strength; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणत्वं (brāhmaṇatvam) - Brahminhood; च (ca) - and; येन (yena) - by which; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अचूचुदम् (acūcudam) - touched;]
(Then to me astonishment arose, having seen that strength of penance. Brahman and Brahminhood, and by which I you touched.)
Then I was astonished, seeing that power of penance—by which I touched both Brahman and Brahminhood in you. (03-178-42)
सत्यं दमस्तपो योगमहिंसा दाननित्यता। साधकानि सदा पुंसां न जातिर्न कुलं नृप ॥०३-१७८-४३॥
satyaṃ damas tapo yoga-mahiṃsā dāna-nityatā। sādhakāni sadā puṃsāṃ na jātir na kulaṃ nṛpa ॥03-178-43॥
[सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; योगम् (yogam) - yoga; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - non-violence; दाननित्यता (dāna-nityatā) - constancy in giving; साधकानि (sādhakāni) - means [to attainment]; सदा (sadā) - always; पुंसाम् (puṃsām) - of men; न (na) - not; जातिः (jātiḥ) - birth; न (na) - not; कुलम् (kulam) - family; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Truth, self-restraint, austerity, yoga, non-violence, constancy in giving are means always for men, not birth, not family, O king.)
O king, truth, self-restraint, austerity, yoga, non-violence, and constant charity are always the means for men, not birth or family. (03-178-43)
अरिष्ट एष ते भ्राता भीमो मुक्तो महाभुजः। स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु महाराज गमिष्यामि दिवं पुनः ॥०३-१७८-४४॥
ariṣṭa eṣa te bhrātā bhīmaḥ mukto mahābhujaḥ। svasti te'stu mahārāja gamiṣyāmi divaṃ punaḥ ॥03-178-44॥
[अरिष्ट (ariṣṭa) - unharmed; एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - your; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; मुक्तो (muktaḥ) - released; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - mighty-armed; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; तेऽस्तु (te'stu) - to you be; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; दिवं (divaṃ) - to heaven; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Unharmed, this your brother Bhima, released, mighty-armed. Well-being to you be, great king; I shall go to heaven again.)
This, your brother Bhima, the mighty-armed, is unharmed and released. Welfare be to you, great king; I shall go to heaven again. (03-178-44)

इत्युक्त्वाजगरं देहं त्यक्त्वा स नहुषो नृपः। दिव्यं वपुः समास्थाय गतस्त्रिदिवमेव ह ॥०३-१७८-४५॥
ity uktvā ajagaraṃ dehaṃ tyaktvā sa nahaṣaḥ nṛpaḥ। divyaṃ vapuḥ samāsthāya gataḥ tridivam eva ha ॥03-178-45॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; अजगरं (ajagaraṃ) - of serpent; देहं (dehaṃ) - body; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; स (sa) - he; नहुषः (nahaṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having assumed; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(Thus having said, having abandoned the serpent body, he, the king Nahuṣa, having assumed a divine form, indeed certainly went to heaven.)
Having spoken thus and abandoning the serpent body, King Nahuṣa assumed a divine form and certainly went to heaven. (03-178-45)
युधिष्ठिरोऽपि धर्मात्मा भ्रात्रा भीमेन सङ्गतः। धौम्येन सहितः श्रीमानाश्रमं पुनरभ्यगात् ॥०३-१७८-४६॥
yudhiṣṭhiro'pi dharmātmā bhrātrā bhīmena saṅgataḥ. dhaumyena sahitaḥ śrīmān āśramaṃ punar abhyagāt ॥03-178-46॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; अपि (api) - also; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous one; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - with brother; भीमेन (bhīmena) - Bhima; सङ्गतः (saṅgataḥ) - joined; धौम्येन (dhaumyena) - with Dhaumya; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached;]
(Yudhishthira also, the righteous one, with (his) brother Bhima joined, with Dhaumya accompanied, the prosperous one, the hermitage again approached.)

ततो द्विजेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः समेतेभ्यो यथातथम्। कथयामास तत्सर्वं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१७८-४७॥
tato dvijebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ sametebhyo yathātatham। kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-178-47॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-borns (Brāhmaṇas, etc.); सर्वेभ्यः (sarvebhyaḥ) - to all; समेतेभ्यः (sametebhyaḥ) - to the assembled; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - as it happened; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - he narrated; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Then to the twice-borns, to all, to the assembled, as it happened, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira narrated all that.)
Then Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira narrated all that as it happened to all the assembled twice-borns. (03-178-47)
तच्छ्रुत्वा ते द्विजाः सर्वे भ्रातरश्चास्य ते त्रयः। आसन्सुव्रीडिता राजन्द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी ॥०३-१७८-४८॥
tac chrutvā te dvijāḥ sarve bhrātaraś cāsya te trayaḥ। āsan suvrīḍitā rājendra draupadī ca yaśasvinī॥03-178-48॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ते (te) - those; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (brāhmaṇas, etc.); सर्वे (sarve) - all; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; ते (te) - those; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; आसन् (āsan) - were; सुव्रीडिताः (suvrīḍitāḥ) - very modest; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - famous;]
(That having heard, those twice-born all, (and) the brothers—his, those three—were very modest, O king, (and) Draupadī also, (the) celebrated one.)
Hearing that, all those brāhmaṇas, his three brothers, and the celebrated Draupadī, O king, became very modest. (03-178-48)
ते तु सर्वे द्विजश्रेष्ठाः पाण्डवानां हितेप्सया। मैवमित्यब्रुवन्भीमं गर्हयन्तोऽस्य साहसम् ॥०३-१७८-४९॥
te tu sarve dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ hitepsayā। maivamity abruvan bhīmaṃ garhayanto'sya sāhasam॥03-178-49॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्विजश्रेष्ठाः (dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ) - best of twice-born; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; हितेप्सया (hitepsayā) - with the desire for welfare; मैवम् (maivam) - not thus; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said; भीमम् (bhīmam) - to Bhīma; गर्हयन्तः (garhayantaḥ) - blaming; अस्य (asya) - his; साहसम् (sāhasam) - rash act;]
(They but all best of twice-born, with the desire for the Pāṇḍavas' welfare, "Do not (do) thus"—thus they said to Bhīma, blaming his rash act.)
But all those best of twice-born, desiring the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, said to Bhīma, "Do not act thus," blaming his rash deed. (03-178-49)
पाण्डवास्तु भयान्मुक्तं प्रेक्ष्य भीमं महाबलम्। हर्षमाहारयां चक्रुर्विजह्रुश्च मुदा युताः ॥०३-१७८-५०॥
pāṇḍavāstu bhayān muktaṃ prekṣya bhīmaṃ mahābalam। harṣam āhārayāṃ cakrur vijahrus ca mudāyutāḥ॥03-178-50॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; तु (tu) - but; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; मुक्तम् (muktam) - released, freed; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; भीम्म् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great strength; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; आहारयाम् चक्रुः (āhārayāṃ cakruḥ) - they brought forth; विजह्रुः (vijahrus) - they rejoiced; च (ca) - and; मुदा (mudā) - with delight; युताः (yutāḥ) - filled, endowed;]
(But the Pāṇḍavas, seeing Bhīma of great strength released from fear, joy they brought forth; they rejoiced and, filled with delight.)
But the Pāṇḍavas, upon seeing Bhīma of great strength freed from danger, were filled with joy and rejoiced delightedly. (03-178-50)
