nidāghāntakaraḥ kālaḥ sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ। tatraiva vasatāṃ teṣāṃ prāvṛṭ samabhipadyata ॥03-179-1॥
[निदाघ-अन्तकरः (nidāgha-antakaraḥ) - summer-ending; (that which brings an end to summer); कालः (kālaḥ) - time; (season); सर्व-भूत-सुख-अवहः (sarva-bhūta-sukha-āvahaḥ) - all-creatures'-happiness-bringing; (bringing happiness to all beings); तत्र-एव (tatra-eva) - there itself; वसताम् (vasatām) - dwelling; (of those dwelling); तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; प्रावृत् (prāvṛṭ) - rains; (the rainy season); समभिपद्यत (samabhipadyata) - approached; (befell);]
(Summer-ending time, bringing happiness to all creatures; there itself, for those dwelling, the rainy season approached.)
The summer-ending season, which brings happiness to all beings, then, for those dwelling there, the rains arrived. (03-179-1)
छादयन्तो महाघोषाः खं दिशश्च बलाहकाः। प्रववर्षुर्दिवारात्रमसिताः सततं तदा ॥०३-१७९-२॥
chādayanto mahāghoṣāḥ khaṃ diśaś ca balāhakāḥ। pravavarṣur divā-rātram asitāḥ satataṃ tadā॥03-179-2॥
[छादयन्तः (chādayantaḥ) - covering; महाघोषाः (mahāghoṣāḥ) - with great sound; खम् (kham) - sky; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; बलाहकाः (balāhakāḥ) - clouds; प्रववर्षुः (pravavarṣuḥ) - rained forth; दिवाऽरात्रम् (divā-rātram) - day and night; असिताः (asitāḥ) - dark (ones); सततम् (satatam) - continuously; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Covering, with great sound, the sky and the directions, the clouds rained forth day and night continuously then, being dark ones.)
At that time, the clouds, dark and resounding greatly, covered the sky and all directions, and poured forth rain day and night without ceasing. (03-179-2)
तपात्ययनिकेताश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। अपेतार्कप्रभाजालाः सविद्युद्विमलप्रभाः ॥०३-१७९-३॥
tapātyayaniketāś ca śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ। apetārkaprabhājālāḥ savidyud-vimalaprabhāḥ॥03-179-3॥
[तपात्ययनिकेताः (tapātyayaniketāḥ) - abodes of the sun and the summer solstice; च (ca) - and; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; अपेत-आर्क-प्रभा-जालाः (apeta-ārka-prabhā-jālāḥ) - with the network of sun's rays gone; सविद्युत्-विमलप्रभाः (savidyut-vimalaprabhāḥ) - having pure luster with lightning;]
(Abodes of the sun and the summer solstice, and by hundreds then by thousands, with the network of the sun's rays gone, having pure brightness with lightning.)
There were hundreds and then thousands of abodes of the sun and the summer solstice, from which the network of the sun's rays had disappeared, and which shone with pure brightness like lightning. (03-179-3)
विरूढशष्पा पृथिवी मत्तदंशसरीसृपा। बभूव पयसा सिक्ता शान्तधूमरजोऽरुणा ॥०३-१७९-४॥
virūḍhaśaṣpā pṛthivī mattadaṃśa-sarīsṛpā। babhūva payasā siktā śāntadhūmarajo'ruṇā ॥03-179-4॥
[विरूढशष्पा (virūḍhaśaṣpā) - with grown grass; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; मत्तदंशसरीसृपा (mattadaṃśa-sarīsṛpā) - with drunken insects and reptiles; बभूव (babhūva) - became; पयसा (payasā) - by water; सिक्ता (siktā) - soaked; शान्तधूमरजः (śāntadhūmarajaḥ) - with settled dust and smoke; अरुणा (aruṇā) - reddish;]
(Earth with grown grass, with drunken insects and reptiles, became, by water soaked, with settled dust and smoke, reddish.)
The earth, covered with grown grass and filled with drunken insects and reptiles, became soaked by water, its dust and smoke settled, and appeared reddish. (03-179-4)
न स्म प्रज्ञायते किञ्चिदम्भसा समवस्तृते। समं वा विषमं वापि नद्यो वा स्थावराणि वा ॥०३-१७९-५॥
na sma prajñāyate kiñcid ambhasā samavastṛte। samaṃ vā viṣamaṃ vāpi nadyō vā sthāvarāṇi vā ॥03-179-5॥
[न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; प्रज्ञायते (prajñāyate) - is recognized; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अम्भसा (ambhasā) - by water; समवस्तृते (samavastṛte) - when evenly covered; समम् (samam) - level; वा (vā) - or; विषमम् (viṣamam) - uneven; वा अपि (vā api) - or also; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; वा (vā) - or; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immobile things; वा (vā) - or;]
(Not indeed anything is recognized when by water evenly covered; (whether) level or uneven or also rivers or immobile things or.)
Indeed, when evenly covered by water, nothing—whether level or uneven, whether rivers or immobile things—can be recognized. (03-179-5)
क्षुब्धतोया महाघोषाः श्वसमाना इवाशुगाः। सिन्धवः शोभयां चक्रुः काननानि तपात्यये ॥०३-१७९-६॥
kṣubdhatoyā mahāghoṣāḥ śvasamānā ivāśugāḥ। sindhavaḥ śobhayāṃ cakruḥ kānanāni tapātyaye ॥03-179-6॥
[क्षुब्धतोया (kṣubdhatoyā) - with agitated waters; महाघोषाः (mahāghoṣāḥ) - with great sound; श्वसमाना (śvasamānāḥ) - breathing; इव (iva) - like; आशुगाः (āśugāḥ) - swift; सिन्धवः (sindhavaḥ) - rivers; शोभयाम् (śobhayām) - adorned; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; काननानि (kānanāni) - forests; तपात्यये (tapātyaye) - at the end of summer;]
(With agitated waters, with great sound, breathing, like swift ones, rivers adorned, they made forests at the end of summer.)
The rivers, with agitated waters and a great roar, breathing like swift beings, adorned the forests at the end of the summer. (03-179-6)
नदतां काननान्तेषु श्रूयन्ते विविधाः स्वनाः। वृष्टिभिस्ताड्यमानानां वराहमृगपक्षिणाम् ॥०३-१७९-७॥
nadatāṃ kānanānteṣu śrūyante vividhāḥ svanāḥ। vṛṣṭibhis tāḍyamānānāṃ varāha-mṛga-pakṣiṇām ॥03-179-7॥
[नदतां (nadatāṃ) - roaring (those who are roaring); काननान्तेषु (kānanānteṣu) - in the interiors of the forests; श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; स्वनाः (svanāḥ) - sounds; वृष्टिभिः (vṛṣṭibhis) - by the rains; ताड्यमानानां (tāḍyamānānāṃ) - being struck; वराहमृगपक्षिणाम् (varāha-mṛga-pakṣiṇām) - of boars, deer, and birds;]
(The various sounds of those roaring in the interiors of the forests, of boars, deer, and birds being struck by the rains, are heard.)
In the depths of the forests, the various cries of boars, deer, and birds being struck by the rain can be heard. (03-179-7)
स्तोककाः शिखिनश्चैव पुंस्कोकिलगणैः सह। मत्ताः परिपतन्ति स्म दर्दुराश्चैव दर्पिताः ॥०३-१७९-८॥
stokakāḥ śikhinaś caiva puṁs-kokila-gaṇaiḥ saha। mattāḥ paripatanti sma dardurāś caiva darpitāḥ॥03-179-8॥
[स्तोककाः (stokakāḥ) - little (herons); शिखिनः (śikhinaḥ) - peacocks; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुंस्कोकिलगणैः (puṁs-kokila-gaṇaiḥ) - by flocks of male cuckoos; सह (saha) - along with; मत्ताः (mattāḥ) - intoxicated; परिपतन्ति (paripatanti) - fly about; स्म (sma) - indeed; दर्दुराः (dardurāḥ) - frogs; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दर्पिताः (darpitāḥ) - arrogant;]
(Little (herons), peacocks, and indeed along with flocks of male cuckoos, intoxicated, fly about, indeed, frogs and also indeed arrogant.)
Little herons, peacocks, and flocks of male cuckoos, together intoxicated, would indeed fly about; and likewise, the frogs were arrogant. (03-179-8)
तथा बहुविधाकारा प्रावृण्मेघानुनादिता। अभ्यतीता शिवा तेषां चरतां मरुधन्वसु ॥०३-१७९-९॥
tathā bahuvidhākārā prāvṛṇmeghānunāditā. abhyatītā śivā teṣāṃ caratāṃ marudhanvasu ॥03-179-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; बहुविधाकारा (bahuvidhākārā) - of many forms; प्रावृण्मेघानुनादिता (prāvṛṇmeghānunāditā) - resounding with autumn clouds; अभ्यतीता (abhyatītā) - passed by; शिवा (śivā) - auspicious (season); तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; चरतां (caratām) - moving; मरुधन्वसु (marudhanvasu) - on the deserts;]
(Thus of many forms, resounding with autumn clouds, the auspicious (season) passed by, of them, moving on the deserts.)
Thus, the many-formed, cloud-resounding and auspicious season passed away for those who were moving about on the desert. (03-179-9)
क्रौञ्चहंसगणाकीर्णा शरत्प्रणिहिताभवत्। रूढकक्षवनप्रस्था प्रसन्नजलनिम्नगा ॥०३-१७९-१०॥
krauñcahaṃsagaṇākīrṇā śaratpraṇihitābhavat। rūḍhakakṣavanaprasthā prasannajalanimnagā ॥03-179-10॥
[क्रौञ्च-हंस-गण-आकीर्णा (krauñca-haṃsa-gaṇa-ākīrṇā) - covered with flocks of krauñca and haṃsa; शरत्-प्रणिहिता-अभवत् (śarat-praṇihitā-abhavat) - assuming the nature of autumn; became; रूढ-कक्ष-वन-प्रस्था (rūḍha-kakṣa-vana-prasthā) - with dense groves, forest expanses; प्रसन्न-जल-निम्नगा (prasanna-jala-nimnagā) - with clear water streams;]
(Covered with flocks of krauñca and haṃsa, assuming the nature of autumn; with dense groves and forest expanses, with clear-water streams.)
The place was filled with flocks of krauñca and haṃsa birds, took on the character of autumn, featured dense groves and forested tracts, and had streams of clear water. (03-179-10)
विमलाकाशनक्षत्रा शरत्तेषां शिवाभवत्। मृगद्विजसमाकीर्णा पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥०३-१७९-११॥
vimalākāśanakṣatrā śaratteṣāṃ śivābhavat। mṛgadvijasamākīrṇā pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām ॥03-179-11॥
[विमल (vimalā) - pure; clean; आकाश (ākāśa) - sky; नक्षत्रा (nakṣatrā) - with stars; शरत् (śarat) - autumn; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; शिवा (śivā) - auspicious; favorable; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; was; मृग (mṛga) - animals; wild beasts; द्विज (dvija) - birds; 'twice-born' (here birds); समाकीर्णा (samākīrṇā) - filled; populated; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled;]
(The autumn, pure-skyed and with stars, became auspicious for them, filled with animals and birds, for the great-souled Pāṇḍavas.)
For the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, the autumn season, with a pure sky and stars, filled with animals and birds, became auspicious. (03-179-11)
पश्यन्तः शान्तरजसः क्षपा जलदशीतलाः। ग्रहनक्षत्रसङ्घैश्च सोमेन च विराजिताः ॥०३-१७९-१२॥
paśyantaḥ śāntarajasaḥ kṣapā jaladaśītalāḥ। grahanakṣatrasaṅghaiś ca somena ca virājitāḥ॥03-179-12॥
[पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - seeing; शान्तरजसः (śāntarajasaḥ) - with calmed dust (passions); क्षपा (kṣapā) - nights; जलदशीतलाः (jaladaśītalāḥ) - cooled by clouds; ग्रहनक्षत्रसङ्घैः (grahanakṣatrasaṅghaiḥ) - by groups of planets and stars; च (ca) - and; सोमेन (somena) - by the moon; च (ca) - and; विराजिताः (virājitāḥ) - adorned;]
(Seeing, with calmed dust (passions), nights cooled by clouds, by groups of planets and stars and by the moon and adorned.)
Beholding the nights, their agitation calmed, made cool by clouds, adorned by groups of planets and stars and by the moon. (03-179-12)
कुमुदैः पुण्डरीकैश्च शीतवारिधराः शिवाः। नदीः पुष्करिणीश्चैव ददृशुः समलङ्कृताः ॥०३-१७९-१३॥
kumudaiḥ puṇḍarīkaiś ca śīta-vāridharāḥ śivāḥ। nadīḥ puṣkariṇīś caiva dadṛśuḥ samalaṅkṛtāḥ॥03-179-13॥
[कुमुदैः (kumudaiḥ) - with white lotuses; पुण्डरीकैः (puṇḍarīkaiḥ) - with lotus flowers; च (ca) - and; शीतवारिधराः (śīta-vāridharāḥ) - bearing cool waters; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; पुष्करिणीः (puṣkariṇīḥ) - lakes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - (they) saw; समलङ्कृताः (samalaṅkṛtāḥ) - well-adorned;]
(With white lotuses, with lotus flowers and bearing cool waters, auspicious rivers and lakes indeed they saw, well-adorned.)
They saw the rivers and lakes, beautifully adorned with white lotuses and other lotuses, bearing cool waters and auspicious.
आकाशनीकाशतटां नीपनीवारसङ्कुलाम्। बभूव चरतां हर्षः पुण्यतीर्थां सरस्वतीम् ॥०३-१७९-१४॥
ākāśa-nikāśa-taṭām nīpa-nīvāra-saṅkulām। babhūva caratām harṣaḥ puṇya-tīrthām sarasvatīm ॥03-179-14॥
[आकाश-नीकाश-तटाम् (ākāśa-nikāśa-taṭām) - having banks resembling the sky; नीप-नीवार-सङ्कुलाम् (nīpa-nīvāra-saṅkulām) - thickly covered with kadamba and wild rice; बभूव (babhūva) - there was; चरताम् (caratām) - for those who were moving (there); हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; पुण्य-तीर्थाम् (puṇya-tīrthām) - holy place; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - the Sarasvatī (river);]
(With banks resembling the sky, thickly covered with kadamba and wild rice, for those who were moving there, there was joy at the holy Sarasvatī river.)
The holy Sarasvatī river, with banks like the sky and dense with kadamba trees and wild rice, brought joy to those passing through. (03-179-14)
ते वै मुमुदिरे वीराः प्रसन्नसलिलां शिवाम्। पश्यन्तो दृढधन्वानः परिपूर्णां सरस्वतीम् ॥०३-१७९-१५॥
te vai mumudire vīrāḥ prasanna-salilāṃ śivām। paśyanto dṛḍha-dhanvānaḥ paripūrṇāṃ sarasvatīm॥03-179-15॥
[ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; मुमुदिरे (mumudire) - rejoiced; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; प्रसन्नसलिलां (prasanna-salilām) - clear-watered; शिवाम् (śivām) - auspicious; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - beholding; दृढधन्वानः (dṛḍha-dhanvānaḥ) - of firm (or strong) bows; परिपूर्णाम् (paripūrṇām) - full; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvati (river);]
(They indeed rejoiced, the heroes, beholding the clear-watered, auspicious, full Sarasvati, with their bows strong.)
The heroes indeed rejoiced as they beheld the auspicious Sarasvati, full and clear of water, their bows held firm. (03-179-15)
तेषां पुण्यतमा रात्रिः पर्वसन्धौ स्म शारदी। तत्रैव वसतामासीत्कार्त्तिकी जनमेजय ॥०३-१७९-१६॥
teṣāṃ puṇyatamā rātriḥ parvasandhau sma śāradī। tatraiva vasatām āsīt kārttikī janamejaya ॥03-179-16॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; पुण्यतमा (puṇyatamā) - most holy; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; पर्वसन्धौ (parvasandhau) - at the junction of festivals; स्म (sma) - indeed; शारदी (śāradī) - autumnal; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; वसताम् (vasatām) - of those residing; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; कार्त्तिकी (kārttikī) - Kārttikī (full moon of Kārtika month); जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Of them, the most holy night, at the junction of festivals, indeed, autumnal, right there, of those residing, was, Kārttikī, O Janamejaya.)
O Janamejaya, for those residing right there, there was the most holy autumnal night at the festival junction, Kārttikī. (03-179-16)
पुण्यकृद्भिर्महासत्त्वैस्तापसैः सह पाण्डवाः। तत्सर्वं भरतश्रेष्ठाः समूहुर्योगमुत्तमम् ॥०३-१७९-१७॥
puṇyakṛdbhir mahāsattvais tāpasaiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ। tat sarvaṃ bharataśreṣṭhāḥ samāhuḥ yogam uttamam ॥03-179-17॥
[पुण्यकृद्भिः (puṇyakṛdbhiḥ) - by those who perform meritorious deeds; महासत्त्वैः (mahāsattvaiḥ) - by the great-souled ones; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by ascetics; सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; भरतश्रेष्ठाः (bharataśreṣṭhāḥ) - O best of the Bharatas; समूहुः (samāhuḥ) - declared; योगम् (yogam) - union; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(By those who perform meritorious deeds, by the great-souled ascetics together with the Pāṇḍavas, that all, O best of Bharatas, declared the supreme union.)
O best of the Bharatas, all that was declared to be the supreme union by the meritorious and great-souled ascetics together with the Pāṇḍavas. (03-179-17)
तमिस्राभ्युदये तस्मिन्धौम्येन सह पाण्डवाः। सूतैः पौरोगवैश्चैव काम्यकं प्रययुर्वनम् ॥०३-१७९-१८॥
tamistrābhyudaye tasmin dhaumyena saha pāṇḍavāḥ। sūtaiḥ paurogavaiś caiva kāmyakaṃ prayayur vanam ॥03-179-18॥
[तमिस्राभ्युदये (tamistrābhyudaye) - at the rise of darkness; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - at that (time/place); धौम्येन (dhaumyena) - with Dhaumya; सह (saha) - together; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सूतैः (sūtaiḥ) - with charioteers; पौरोगवैः (paurogavaiḥ) - with domestic priests; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - to Kāmyaka; प्रययुः (prayayuḥ) - they went; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(At the rise of darkness, at that (time), together with Dhaumya, the Pāṇḍavas, with charioteers and domestic priests indeed, went to the forest of Kāmyaka.)
At the onset of darkness, the Pāṇḍavas, together with Dhaumya, charioteers, and domestic priests, proceeded to the forest of Kāmyaka. (03-179-18)
