मार्कण्डेयं महात्मानमूचुः पाण्डुसुतास्तदा। माहात्म्यं द्विजमुख्यानां श्रोतुमिच्छाम कथ्यताम् ॥०३-१८२-१॥
mārkaṇḍeyaṃ mahātmānam ūcuḥ pāṇḍusutās tadā। māhātmyaṃ dvija-mukhyānāṃ śrotum icchāma kathyatām॥03-182-1॥
[मार्कण्डेयं (mārkaṇḍeyaṃ) - Markandeya; (proper noun; Markandeya sage;) महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled; (of great spirit;) ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; पाण्डुसुताः (pāṇḍusutāḥ) - sons of Pandu; (Pandava brothers;) तदा (tadā) - then; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; (glory; significance;) द्विजमुख्यानाम् (dvija-mukhyānām) - of the foremost twice-born (Brahmanas); श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छाम (icchāma) - we desire; कथ्यताम् (kathyatām) - may it be told; (let it be narrated;);]
(Markandeya, the great-souled, the sons of Pandu then said. The greatness of the foremost twice-born to hear we desire, may it be told.)
Then the sons of Pandu said to the great-souled Markandeya: "We wish to hear the greatness of the foremost of the twice-born; let it be told." (03-182-1)
एवमुक्तः स भगवान्मार्कण्डेयो महातपाः। उवाच सुमहातेजाः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥०३-१८२-२॥
evam-uktaḥ sa bhagavān-mārkaṇḍeyo mahā-tapāḥ। uvāca su-mahā-tejāḥ sarva-śāstra-viśāradaḥ॥03-182-2॥

(Thus addressed, he, the venerable Mārkaṇḍeya, of great austerity, said—of very great brilliance, expert in all śāstras.)
Thus addressed, the venerable Mārkaṇḍeya, possessed of great austerity, very great brilliance, and expert in all śāstras, spoke. (03-182-2)
हैहयानां कुलकरो राजा परपुरञ्जयः। कुमारो रूपसम्पन्नो मृगयामचरद्बली ॥०३-१८२-३॥
haihayānāṃ kulakaro rājā parapurañjayaḥ। kumāro rūpasampanno mṛgayām acarad balī॥03-182-3॥
[हैहयानां (haihayānām) - of the Haihayas;, कुलकरः (kulakaraḥ) - descendant of the family;, राजा (rājā) - king;, परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;, कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - prince;, रूपसम्पन्नः (rūpasampannaḥ) - endowed with beauty;, मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - in (the act of) hunting;, अचरत् (acarad) - roamed;, बली (balī) - strong;.;]
(Of the Haihayas, the descendant of the family, king, conqueror of enemy cities, the prince endowed with beauty roamed in the hunt, strong.)
The king, the head of the Haihaya clan and conqueror of enemy cities, a prince endowed with beauty and strength, wandered in the hunt. (03-182-3)
चरमाणस्तु सोऽरण्ये तृणवीरुत्समावृते। कृष्णाजिनोत्तरासङ्गं ददर्श मुनिमन्तिके ॥ स तेन निहतोऽरण्ये मन्यमानेन वै मृगम् ॥०३-१८२-४॥
caramāṇas tu so'raṇye tṛṇavīrutsamāvṛte। kṛṣṇājinottarāsaṅgaṃ dadarśa munim antike ॥ sa tena nihato'raṇye manyamānena vai mṛgam ॥03-182-4॥
[चरमाणः (caramāṇaḥ) - moving; walking; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; तृणवीरुत्-समावृते (tṛṇavīrut-samāvṛte) - covered with grass and shrubs; कृष्णाजिन-उत्तरासङ्गम् (kṛṣṇājina-uttarāsaṅgam) - having a black antelope skin as upper garment; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; मुनिम् (munim) - the sage; अन्तिके (antike) - near; सः (saḥ) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; मन्ज्यमानेन (manyamānena) - being considered as; वै (vai) - indeed; मृगम् (mṛgam) - beast; animal; deer;]
(But walking he in the forest covered with grass and shrubs, a black antelope-skin upper garment he saw on the sage near. He by him was killed in the forest, being considered indeed as a beast.)
But as he was walking in the forest covered with grass and shrubs, he saw near him a sage wearing a black antelope-skin upper garment. Mistaking the sage for a beast, he killed him in the forest. (03-182-4)
व्यथितः कर्म तत्कृत्वा शोकोपहतचेतनः। जगाम हैहयानां वै सकाशं प्रथितात्मनाम् ॥०३-१८२-५॥
vyathitaḥ karma tat kṛtvā śoka-upahata-cetanaḥ। jagāma haihayānāṃ vai sakāśam prathita-ātmanām॥03-182-5॥
[व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - afflicted; कर्म (karma) - the deed; तत् (tat) - that; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; शोक (śoka) - grief; उपहत (upahata) - struck down; चेतनः (cetanaḥ) - mind; जगाम (jagāma) - went; हैहयानाम् (haihayānām) - of the Haihayas; वै (vai) - indeed; सकाशम् (sakāśam) - to the presence; प्रथितात्मनाम् (prathita-ātmanām) - of the renowned souls;]
(Afflicted having done that deed, with mind struck down by grief, he went to the presence indeed of the Haihayas, of the renowned souls.)
Having performed that deed and afflicted with grief, his mind overwhelmed by sorrow, he went to the Haihayas, the renowned ones. (03-182-5)
राज्ञां राजीवनेत्रोसौ कुमारः पृथिवीपते। तेषां च तद्यथावृत्तं कथयामास वै तदा ॥०३-१८२-६॥
rājñāṃ rājīvanetrosau kumāraḥ pṛthivīpate. teṣāṃ ca tadyathāvṛttaṃ kathayāmāsa vai tadā ॥03-182-6॥
[राज्ञां (rājñām) - of the kings; राजीवनेत्रः (rājīva-netraḥ) - lotus-eyed; असौ (asau) - this (he); कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - prince; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivī-pate) - O lord of the earth; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; यथावृत्तम् (yathā-vṛttam) - as it had happened; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - he narrated; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Of the kings, the lotus-eyed prince—this one—O lord of the earth, of them and that as it had happened, he narrated indeed then.)
O lord of the earth, this lotus-eyed prince narrated to them what had happened at that time. (03-182-6)
तं चापि हिंसितं तात मुनिं मूलफलाशिनम्। श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा च ते तत्र बभूवुर्दीनमानसाः ॥०३-१८२-७॥
taṃ cāpi hiṃsitaṃ tāta muniṃ mūlaphalāśinam। śrutvā dṛṣṭvā ca te tatra babhūvurdīnamānasāḥ ॥03-182-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हिंसितं (hiṃsitam) - harmed; तात (tāta) - dear one; मुनिं (munim) - sage; मूलफलाशिनम् (mūlaphalāśinam) - one who eats roots and fruits; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; बभूवु: (babhūvuḥ) - became; दीनमानसाः (dīnamānasāḥ) - dejected in mind;]
(Him also, harmed, dear one, the sage, eater of roots and fruits, having heard, having seen, and they there became dejected in mind.)
Having heard and seen, O dear one, that the sage who subsisted on roots and fruits had also been harmed, they there became dejected in mind. (03-182-7)
कस्यायमिति ते सर्वे मार्गमाणास्ततस्ततः। जग्मुश्चारिष्टनेमेस्ते तार्क्ष्यस्याश्रममञ्जसा ॥०३-१८२-८॥
kasyāyam iti te sarve mārgamāṇās tataḥ tataḥ। jagmuś cāriṣṭanemās te tārkṣyasya āśramam añjasā ॥03-182-8॥
[कस्य (kasya) - of whom; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मार्गमाणाः (mārgamāṇāḥ) - searching; ततस् ततः (tataḥ tataḥ) - here and there; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; च (ca) - and; अरिष्टनेमाः (ariṣṭanemāḥ) - Ariṣṭanemi (proper noun); ते (te) - they; तार्क्ष्यस्य (tārkṣyasya) - of Tārkṣya (proper noun, Garuḍa); आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - straight;]
(Of whom is this—thus (thought) they all, searching here and there; Ariṣṭanemi and the others, they went straight to the hermitage of Tārkṣya.)
“Whose is this?”—thus thinking, all of them, searching here and there, Ariṣṭanemi and the others went straight to the hermitage of Tārkṣya. (03-182-8)
तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं तं मुनिं संशितव्रतम्। तस्थुः सर्वे स तु मुनिस्तेषां पूजामथाहरत् ॥०३-१८२-९॥
te'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ taṃ muniṃ saṃśitavratam। tasthuḥ sarve sa tu munisteṣāṃ pūjāmathāharat॥03-182-9॥
[ते (te) - they; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled one; तं (taṃ) - that; मुनिं (muniṃ) - sage; संशितव्रतम् (saṃśitavratam) - firm in vow; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; अथ (atha) - then; अहरत् (aḥarat) - performed;]
(They, having saluted the great-souled, that sage firm in vow, stood all; he, but, the sage, then performed their honor.)
Having saluted that great-souled sage of firm vows, all of them stood still; but the sage thereupon rendered honor to them. (03-182-9)
ते तमूचुर्महात्मानं न वयं सत्क्रियां मुने। त्वत्तोऽर्हाः कर्मदोषेण ब्राह्मणो हिंसितो हि नः ॥०३-१८२-१०॥
te tam ūcur mahātmānaṃ na vayaṃ satkriyāṃ mune। tvatto'rhāḥ karmadoṣeṇa brāhmaṇo hiṃsito hi naḥ ॥03-182-10॥
[ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled one; न (na) - not; वयम् (vayam) - we; सत्क्रियाम् (satkriyām) - proper rite; मुने (mune) - O sage; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; अर्हाः (arhāḥ) - worthy; कर्मदोषेण (karmadoṣeṇa) - by fault of action; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; हिंसितः (hiṃsitaḥ) - has been harmed; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(They said to that great-souled one: Not we, O sage, [are] worthy of proper rites from you. By the fault of action, the Brāhmaṇa has indeed been harmed to us.)
They said to the great-souled one: "O sage, we are not worthy of your proper rites. Because of the fault of action, the Brāhmaṇa has indeed been harmed by us." (03-182-10)
तानब्रवीत्स विप्रर्षिः कथं वो ब्राह्मणो हतः। क्व चासौ ब्रूत सहिताः पश्यध्वं मे तपोबलम् ॥०३-१८२-११॥
tān abravīt sa vipraṛṣiḥ kathaṃ vaḥ brāhmaṇo hataḥ। kva ca asau brūta sahitāḥ paśyadhvam me tapobalam॥03-182-11॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सः (sa) - he; विप्रर्षिः (vipraṛṣiḥ) - the sage among brāhmaṇas; कथं (katham) - how; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - he; ब्रूत (brūta) - tell; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; पश्यध्वं (paśyadhvam) - see; मे (me) - my; तपोबलम् (tapobalam) - the strength of my austerity;]
(To them, he, the sage among brāhmaṇas, said: How was the brāhmaṇa killed by you? Where is he also? Tell (me) together; see my strength of austerity.)
He, the greatest of brāhmaṇas, said to them, "How was the brāhmaṇa killed by you? Where is he now? Tell me together; behold my ascetic power." (3-182-11)
ते तु तत्सर्वमखिलमाख्यायास्मै यथातथम्। नापश्यंस्तमृषिं तत्र गतासुं ते समागताः ॥ अन्वेषमाणाः सव्रीडाः स्वप्नवद्गतमानसाः ॥०३-१८२-१२॥
te tu tatsarvamakhilamākhyāyāsmai yathātatham। nāpaśyaṃstamṛṣiṃ tatra gatāsuṃ te samāgatāḥ॥ anveṣamāṇāḥ savrīḍāḥ svapnavadgatamānasāḥ॥03-182-12॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; तत्-सर्वम्-अखिलम् (tat-sarvam-akhilam) - that all entirely; आख्याय (ākhyāya) - having related; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; यथा-तथम् (yathā-tatham) - as it was; न (na) - not; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - did see; तम्-ऋषिम् (tam-ṛṣim) - that sage; तत्र (tatra) - there; गत-आसुम् (gata-āsum) - departed-soul (dead); ते (te) - they; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having gathered; अन्वेषमाणाः (anveṣamāṇāḥ) - searching; स-व्रीडाः (sa-vrīḍāḥ) - with shame; स्वप्नवत्-गत-मानसाः (svapnavat-gata-mānasāḥ) - with minds gone as if in a dream;]
(They but that all entirely having related to him as it was, not did see that sage there, departed-soul (dead); they having gathered, searching, with shame, with minds gone as if in a dream.)
But after relating everything entirely to him just as it happened, they did not see the sage there—he was dead; then those assembled, searching with embarrassment, their minds as if lost in a dream. (03-182-12)
तानब्रवीत्तत्र मुनिस्तार्क्ष्यः परपुरञ्जयः। स्यादयं ब्राह्मणः सोऽथ यो युष्माभिर्विनाशितः ॥ पुत्रो ह्ययं मम नृपास्तपोबलसमन्वितः ॥०३-१८२-१३॥
tān abravīt tatra muniḥ tārkṣyaḥ parapurañjayaḥ. syād ayaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ saḥ atha yaḥ yuṣmābhiḥ vināśitaḥ ॥ putraḥ hi ayaṃ mama nṛpa ātapobalasamanvitaḥ ॥03-182-13॥
[तान् (tān) - to them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; तत्र (tatra) - there; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तात्क्ष्यः (tārkṣyaḥ) - Tārkṣya; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - destroyer of enemy cities; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; अयम् (ayaṃ) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; यः (yaḥ) - who; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you; विनाशितः (vināśitaḥ) - destroyed; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - my; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; आ (ā) - with; तपोबल (tapobala) - ascetic power; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed;]
(To them spoke there the sage Tārkṣya, destroyer of enemy cities: "May this be the Brāhmaṇa, that one then who was destroyed by you. This indeed, O king, is my son endowed with ascetic power." (03-182-13))
Then the sage Tārkṣya, the conqueror of enemy cities, spoke to them: "It may be that this Brāhmaṇa—he whom you destroyed—is my son, O king, endowed with great ascetic power." (03-182-13)
ते तु दृष्ट्वैव तमृषिं विस्मयं परमं गताः। महदाश्चर्यमिति वै विब्रुवाणा महीपते ॥०३-१८२-१४॥
te tu dṛṣṭvaiva tam ṛṣiṃ vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ। mahad āścaryam iti vai vibruvāṇā mahīpate ॥03-182-14॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वैव (dṛṣṭvaiva) - having seen indeed; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; विव्रुवाणाः (vibruvāṇāḥ) - speaking; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
(They but having seen indeed him, the sage, astonishment supreme attained; (and) great wonder—thus indeed speaking, O king.)
But they, having seen that sage, became filled with supreme astonishment; saying, “This is a great wonder indeed,” O king. (03-182-14)
मृतो ह्ययमतो दृष्टः कथं जीवितमाप्तवान्। किमेतत्तपसो वीर्यं येनायं जीवितः पुनः ॥ श्रोतुमिच्छाम विप्रर्षे यदि श्रोतव्यमित्युत ॥०३-१८२-१५॥
mṛto hyayamato dṛṣṭaḥ kathaṃ jīvitamāptavān। kimetattapaso vīryaṃ yenāyaṃ jīvitaḥ punaḥ ॥ śrotumicchāma viprarṣe yadi śrotavyamityuta ॥03-182-15॥
[मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); अतः (ataḥ) - from here; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; कथम् (katham) - how; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; आप्तवान् (āptavān) - has obtained; किम् (kim) - what; एतत् (etat) - this; तपसो (tapasaḥ) - of penance; वीर्यं (vīryam) - power; येन (yena) - by which; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); जीवितः (jīvitaḥ) - revived; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छाम (icchāma) - we wish; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; यदि (yadi) - if; श्रोतव्यम् (śrotavyam) - to be heard; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Dead indeed this (person) from here was seen; how life has he obtained? What is this penance's power by which this (person) was revived again? To hear we wish, O best of Brāhmaṇas, if it is to be heard, thus indeed. (03-182-15))
Indeed, this person was seen to be dead here; how has he regained life? What is this power of penance by which he has come to life again? We wish to hear it, O best of Brāhmaṇas, if it is to be told. (03-182-15)
स तानुवाच नास्माकं मृत्युः प्रभवते नृपाः। कारणं वः प्रवक्ष्यामि हेतुयोगं समासतः ॥०३-१८२-१६॥
sa tān uvāca nāsmākaṃ mṛtyuḥ prabhavate nṛpāḥ। kāraṇaṃ vaḥ pravakṣyāmi hetuyogaṃ samāsataḥ॥03-182-16॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; न (na) - not; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; प्रभवते (prabhavate) - arises; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; कारणं (kāraṇam) - the cause; वः (vaḥ) - to you; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; हेतुयोगं (hetuyogam) - connection of causes; समासतः (samāsataḥ) - in summary;]
(He to them said: not our death arises, O kings. The cause to you I shall declare, the connection of causes in summary.)
He said to them, "Death does not befall us, O kings. I will tell you the cause—the connection of causes—in brief." (03-182-16)
सत्यमेवाभिजानीमो नानृते कुर्महे मनः। स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठामस्तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः ॥०३-१८२-१७॥
satyam eva abhijānīmaḥ na anṛte kurmahe manaḥ। svadharmam anutiṣṭhāmaḥ tasmāt mṛtyu-bhayam na naḥ॥03-182-17॥
[सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिजानीमः (abhijānīmaḥ) - we recognize; न (na) - not; अनृते (anṛte) - in untruth; कुर्महे (kurmahe) - we put; मनः (manaḥ) - the mind; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - one’s own duty; अनुतिष्ठामः (anutiṣṭhāmaḥ) - we perform; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मृत्यु-भयम् (mṛtyu-bhayam) - fear of death; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(Truth indeed we recognize, not in untruth we put the mind. One’s own duty we perform, therefore fear of death not for us.)
We recognize only the truth and do not fix our minds on falsehood. We perform our own duty; therefore, we do not have fear of death. (03-182-17)
यद्ब्राह्मणानां कुशलं तदेषां कथयामहे। नैषां दुश्चरितं ब्रूमस्तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः ॥०३-१८२-१८॥
yadbrāhmaṇānāṃ kuśalaṃ tadeṣāṃ kathayāmahe। naiṣāṃ duścaritaṃ brūmastasmānmṛtyubhayaṃ na naḥ॥03-182-18॥
[यत् (yat) - which; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of Brāhmaṇas; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - welfare; तत् (tat) - that; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; कथयामहे (kathayāmahe) - we speak; न (na) - not; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; दुश्चरितम् (duścaritam) - wicked conduct; ब्रूमः (brūmaḥ) - we say; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मृत्युभयम् (mṛtyubhayaṃ) - fear of death; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(Which is the welfare of Brāhmaṇas, that of these we speak. Not the wicked conduct of these we say; therefore, fear of death is not to us. (03-182-18))
We speak only of the welfare of Brāhmaṇas, not of their wicked deeds; therefore, we do not have any fear of death. (03-182-18)
अतिथीनन्नपानेन भृत्यानत्यशनेन च। तेजस्विदेशवासाच्च तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः ॥०३-१८२-१९॥
atithīn annapānena bhṛtyān aty-aśanena ca। tejasvi deśa-vāsāc ca tasmāt mṛtyu-bhayaṃ na naḥ॥03-182-19॥
[अतिथीन् (atithīn) - guests; अन्नपानेन (annapānena) - by food and drink; भृत्यान् (bhṛtyān) - servants; अत्यशनेन (aty-aśanena) - by excess eating; च (ca) - and; तेजस्वि (tejasvi) - powerful person; देशवासात् (deśa-vāsāt) - by dwelling in (their) country; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मृत्युभयम् (mṛtyu-bhayam) - fear of death; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(Guests by food and drink, servants by excess eating and, by dwelling in the land of the powerful, therefore, fear of death not to us.)
By feeding guests, not overfeeding servants, and by living in the land of the powerful, therefore, we have no fear of death. (03-182-19)
एतद्वै लेशमात्रं वः समाख्यातं विमत्सराः। गच्छध्वं सहिताः सर्वे न पापाद्भयमस्ति वः ॥०३-१८२-२०॥
etad vai leśamātraṃ vaḥ samākhyātaṃ vimatsarāḥ। gacchadhvaṃ sahitāḥ sarve na pāpādbhayaṃ asti vaḥ॥03-182-20॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; लेशमात्रम् (leśamātram) - only a little; वः (vaḥ) - to you; समाख्यातम् (samākhyātam) - has been explained; विमत्सराः (vimatsarāḥ) - free from envy; गच्छध्वम् (gacchadhvam) - go; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; न (na) - not; पापात् (pāpāt) - from evil; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; अस्ति (asti) - is; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(This indeed only a little has been explained to you, O free from envy. Go, together all, not from evil fear is for you.)
This is only a little I have explained to you, O those free from envy. All of you go together; there is no fear of evil for you. (03-182-20)
एवमस्त्विति ते सर्वे प्रतिपूज्य महामुनिम्। स्वदेशमगमन्हृष्टा राजानो भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१८२-२१॥
evam astv iti te sarve pratipūjya mahāmunim। svadeśam agamann hṛṣṭā rā jānaḥ bharatarṣabha ॥03-182-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus (said); ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रतिपूज्य (pratipūjya) - having honoured; महामुनिम् (mahāmunim) - the great sage; स्वदेशम् (svadeśam) - to (their) own country; अगमन् (agaman) - they went; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus let it be—so (they) all, having honoured the great sage, to (their) own country went joyful, the kings, O best of the Bharatas.)
“Let it be so”—having thus honoured the great sage, all the kings joyfully returned to their own countries, O best of the Bharatas. (03-182-21)
