एवं सङ्कथिते कृत्स्ने मोक्षधर्मे युधिष्ठिर। दृढं प्रीतमना विप्रो धर्मव्याधमुवाच ह ॥०३-२०४-१॥
evaṃ saṅkathite kṛtsne mokṣadharme yudhiṣṭhira। dṛḍhaṃ prītamanā vipro dharmavyādhamuvāca ha ॥03-204-1॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सङ्कथिते (saṅkathite) - having been fully discussed; कृत्स्ने (kṛtsne) - in entirety; मोक्षधर्मे (mokṣadharme) - in the topic of liberation and righteousness; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; दृढं (dṛḍhaṃ) - steadfastly; प्रीतमना (prītamanā) - with pleased mind; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; धर्मव्याधम् (dharmavyādham) - to Dharma-vyādha; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, when the topic of liberation and righteousness had been fully discussed in entirety, O Yudhishthira, the Brāhmaṇa, with a steadfast and pleased mind, indeed spoke to Dharma-vyādha.)
Thus, when the entire topic of liberation and righteousness had been fully discussed, O Yudhishthira, the Brāhmaṇa, with steadfast joy in his heart, spoke to Dharma-vyādha. (03-204-1)
न्याययुक्तमिदं सर्वं भवता परिकीर्तितम्। न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चिद्धर्मेष्विह हि दृश्यते ॥०३-२०४-२॥
nyāyayuktam idaṃ sarvaṃ bhavatā parikīrtitam। na te'sty aviditaṃ kiñcid dharmeṣv iha hi dṛśyate॥03-204-2॥
[न्याययुक्तम् (nyāyayuktam) - joined with justice; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; परिकीर्तितम् (parikīrtitam) - proclaimed; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; अस्ति (asti) - is; अविदितम् (aviditam) - unknown; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; धर्मेषु (dharmeṣu) - in matters of dharma; इह (iha) - here; हि (hi) - indeed; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Joined with justice, this all by you is proclaimed. Not to you is unknown anything in matters of dharma here indeed is seen.)
Everything you have proclaimed here is in accordance with justice. Indeed, nothing at all concerning dharma appears to be unknown to you. (3-204-2)
व्याध उवाच॥

प्रत्यक्षं मम यो धर्मस्तं पश्य द्विजसत्तम। येन सिद्धिरियं प्राप्ता मया ब्राह्मणपुङ्गव ॥०३-२०४-३॥
pratyakṣaṃ mama yo dharmas taṃ paśya dvijasattama। yena siddhir iyaṃ prāptā mayā brāhmaṇapuṅgava ॥03-204-3॥
[प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣam) - direct; manifest; मम (mama) - my; यः (yaḥ) - which; who; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; righteousness; duty; तम् (tam) - that; पश्य (paśya) - see; behold; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; येन (yena) - by which; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - accomplishment; success; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - has been attained; has been obtained; मया (mayā) - by me; ब्राह्मणपुङ्गव (brāhmaṇapuṅgava) - O foremost Brāhmaṇa;]
(Direct my which law that see O best of twice-born. By which accomplishment this has been attained by me, O foremost Brāhmaṇa.)

उत्तिष्ठ भगवन्क्षिप्रं प्रविश्याभ्यन्तरं गृहम्। द्रष्टुमर्हसि धर्मज्ञ मातरं पितरं च मे ॥०३-२०४-४॥
uttiṣṭha bhagavan-kṣipraṃ praviśyābhyantaraṃ gṛham। draṣṭum-arhasi dharmajña mātaraṃ pitaraṃ ca me ॥03-204-4॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; क्षणिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; अभ्यन्तरं (abhyantaraṃ) - inner; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my;]
(Arise, O venerable one, quickly having entered inner house, to see, you ought, knower of dharma, my mother and father.)
Arise, O venerable one, quickly enter the inner house; you, knower of dharma, ought to see my mother and father. (03-204-4)

इत्युक्तः स प्रविश्याथ ददर्श परमार्चितम्। सौधं हृद्यं चतुःशालमतीव च मनोहरम् ॥०३-२०४-५॥
ity uktaḥ sa praviśyātha dadarśa paramārcitam। saudhaṃ hṛdyaṃ catuḥśālam atīva ca manoharam ॥03-204-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been told; स (sa) - he; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; अथ (atha) - then; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; परमार्चितम् (paramārcitam) - most highly honored; सौधं (saudhaṃ) - palace; हृद्यं (hṛdyaṃ) - pleasing to the heart; चतुःशालम् (catuḥśālam) - with four halls; अतीव (atīva) - very; च (ca) - and; मनोहरम् (manoharam) - delightful;]
(Thus having been told, he having entered then saw the most highly honored palace, pleasing to the heart, with four halls, very and delightful.)

देवतागृहसङ्काशं दैवतैश्च सुपूजितम्। शयनासनसम्बाधं गन्धैश्च परमैर्युतम् ॥०३-२०४-६॥
devatāgṛhasaṅkāśaṃ daivataiś ca supūjitam। śayanāsanasambādhaṃ gandhaiś ca paramairyutam ॥03-204-6॥
[देवतागृहसङ्काशं (devatāgṛhasaṅkāśam) - resembling the abode of the gods; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the deities; च (ca) - and; सुपूजितम् (supūjitam) - well-honored; शयनासनसम्बाधं (śayanāsanasambādham) - filled with beds and seats; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with fragrances; च (ca) - and; परमैः (paramaiḥ) - supreme; युक्तम् (yutam) - endowed;]
(Resembling the abode of the gods, well-honored by the deities; filled with beds and seats, endowed with supreme fragrances.)
(That place was) like the abode of the gods, thoroughly honored by the deities, furnished with beds and seats, and suffused with the most excellent fragrances. (03-204-6)
तत्र शुक्लाम्बरधरौ पितरावस्य पूजितौ। कृताहारौ सुतुष्टौ तावुपविष्टौ वरासने ॥ धर्मव्याधस्तु तौ दृष्ट्वा पादेषु शिरसापतत् ॥०३-२०४-७॥
tatra śuklāmbara-dharau pitarāv asya pūjitau। kṛtāhārau sutuṣṭau tau upaviṣṭau varāsane॥ dharma-vyādhas tu tau dṛṣṭvā pādeṣu śirasā apatata॥03-204-7॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; शुक्लाम्बरधरौ (śuklāmbara-dharau) - wearing white garments (dual); पितरौ (pitarau) - the two parents; अस्य (asya) - his; पूजितौ (pūjitau) - honored (dual); कृताहारौ (kṛtāhārau) - having eaten (dual); सुतुष्टौ (sutuṣṭau) - well pleased (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; उपविष्टौ (upaviṣṭau) - seated (dual); वरासने (varāsane) - on a noble seat; धर्मव्याधः (dharma-vyādhaḥ) - Dharma-vyādha (the righteous hunter); तु (tu) - but; तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पादेषु (pādeṣu) - at [their] feet; शिरसा (śirasā) - with [his] head; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; ०३-२०४-७ (03-204-7) - (03-204-7);]
(There, wearing white garments, his two parents, honored, having eaten, well pleased, those two, seated on a noble seat. But Dharma-vyādha, having seen those two, fell at their feet with his head. (03-204-7))
There, his two parents, wearing white garments, honored, having eaten, well satisfied, were seated upon a noble seat. But Dharma-vyādha, upon seeing them, fell at their feet with his head. (03-204-7)
वृद्धावूचतुः॥
vṛddhāv ūcatuḥ॥
[वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - the two old ones; ूचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - spoke;]
(The two old ones spoke;)
The two elders spoke.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ धर्मज्ञ धर्मस्त्वामभिरक्षतु। प्रीतौ स्वस्तव शौचेन दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुहि ॥ सत्पुत्रेण त्वया पुत्र नित्यकालं सुपूजितौ ॥०३-२०४-८॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha dharmajña dharmastvām abhirakṣatu। prītau svas tava śaucena dīrgham āyur avāpnuhi॥ satputreṇa tvayā putra nityakālaṃ supūjitau॥03-204-8॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिरक्षतु (abhirakṣatu) - may protect; प्रीतौ (prītau) - in joy; स्वः (svaḥ) - welfare; तव (tava) - your; शौचेन (śaucena) - by purity; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - attain; सत्पुत्रेण (satputreṇa) - with a virtuous son; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्र (putra) - son; नित्यकालम् (nityakālam) - always; सुपूजितौ (supūjitau) - well-honored;]
(Arise, arise, knower of dharma! May dharma protect you. In joy, for your welfare, by purity, long life attain. With a virtuous son, by you, son, always, well-honored.)
Arise, arise, O knower of dharma! May dharma protect you. With purity, for your welfare and delight, attain long life. O son, always be respected and honored along with your virtuous son. (03-204-8)
न तेऽन्यद्दैवतं किञ्चिद्दैवतेष्वपि वर्तते। प्रयतत्वाद्द्विजातीनां दमेनासि समन्वितः ॥०३-२०४-९॥
na te'nyad daivataṃ kiñcid daivateṣv api vartate. prayatatvād dvijātīnām damenāsi samanvitaḥ ॥03-204-9॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; दैवतम् (daivatam) - deity; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; दैवतेषु (daivateṣu) - among deities; अपि (api) - even; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; प्रयतत्वात् (prayatatvāt) - due to self-restraint; द्विजातीनाम् (dvijātīnām) - of the twice-born; दमेन (damena) - by control (of senses); असि (asi) - you are; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed;]
(Not for you any other deity at all among deities even exists. Due to self-restraint of twice-born, by control (of senses) you are endowed.)
For you, there is truly no other deity among the gods. Because of the self-restraint of the twice-born, you are endowed with the discipline of self-control. (03-204-9)
पितुः पितामहा ये च तथैव प्रपितामहाः। प्रीतास्ते सततं पुत्र दमेनावां च पूजया ॥०३-२०४-१०॥
pituḥ pitāmahā ye ca tathaiva prapitāmahāḥ। prītās te satataṃ putra damenāvāṃ ca pūjayā ॥03-204-10॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - grandfathers; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; प्रपितामहाः (prapitāmahāḥ) - great-grandfathers; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; ते (te) - they; सततम् (satataṃ) - always; पुत्र (putra) - O son; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; आवाम् (āvāṃ) - by us two; च (ca) - and; पूजया (pūjayā) - by honoring;]
(Of the father, the grandfathers, and likewise the great-grandfathers who are always pleased, O son, by self-restraint and by honoring by us two.)
O son, the grandfathers of your father and likewise the great-grandfathers are always pleased by our self-restraint and honoring.
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा शुश्रूषा नैव हीयते। न चान्या वितथा बुद्धिर्दृश्यते साम्प्रतं तव ॥०३-२०४-११॥
manasā karmaṇā vācā śuśrūṣā naiva hīyate। na cānyā vitathā buddhir dṛśyate sāmprataṃ tava॥03-204-11॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; शुश्रूषा (śuśrūṣā) - service; desire to serve; नैव (naiva) - not at all; हीयते (hīyate) - is diminished; is lessened; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्या (anyā) - other; another; वितथा (vitathā) - false; untrue; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; intellect; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; now; तव (tava) - your;]
(By mind, by action, by speech, service is not at all diminished; and not another false understanding is seen at present of yours.)
Your desire to serve is not in the least diminished by mind, action, or speech; nor is any other untrue intention seen in you at present. (03-204-11)
जामदग्न्येन रामेण यथा वृद्धौ सुपूजितौ। तथा त्वया कृतं सर्वं तद्विशिष्टं च पुत्रक ॥०३-२०४-१२॥
jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa yathā vṛddhau supūjitau। tathā tvayā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ tad-viśiṣṭaṃ ca putraka॥03-204-12॥
[जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by Jāmadagnya (the son of Jamadagni; by Paraśurāma); रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma (Paraśurāma); यथा (yathā) - just as; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - to the elders; सुपूजितौ (supūjitau) - well-honored; तथा (tathā) - so, similarly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; तद्विशिष्टं (tad-viśiṣṭaṃ) - greater than that; च (ca) - and; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(By Jāmadagnya Rāma, just as (the) elders (were) well-honored; so by you, (has been) done all (and) greater than that also, O son.)
Just as the elders were well-honored by Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, O son, so all has been done by you, and even more than that. (03-204-12)

ततस्तं ब्राह्मणं ताभ्यां धर्मव्याधो न्यवेदयत्। तौ स्वागतेन तं विप्रमर्चयामासतुस्तदा ॥०३-२०४-१३॥
tatastaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ tābhyāṃ dharmavyādho nyavedayat। tau svāgaten a taṃ vipram arcayāmāsatus tadā ॥03-204-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - that; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - brāhmaṇa; ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - to those two; धर्मव्याधः (dharmavyādhaḥ) - Dharmavyādha; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - introduced; तौ (tau) - the two; स्वागतेन (svāgatena) - with welcome; तं (taṃ) - that; विप्रम् (vipram) - brāhmaṇa; अर्चयामासतुः (arcayāmāsatuḥ) - worshipped; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then that brāhmaṇa to those two Dharmavyādha introduced. The two with welcome that brāhmaṇa worshipped then.)
Then Dharmavyādha introduced that brāhmaṇa to the two of them. The two of them then welcomed and worshipped the brāhmaṇa. (03-204-13)
प्रतिगृह्य च तां पूजां द्विजः पप्रच्छ तावुभौ। सपुत्राभ्यां सभृत्याभ्यां कच्चिद्वां कुशलं गृहे ॥ अनामयं च वां कच्चित्सदैवेह शरीरयोः ॥०३-२०४-१४॥
pratigṛhya ca tāṃ pūjāṃ dvijaḥ papraccha tāvubhau। saputrābhyāṃ sabhṛtyābhyāṃ kaccidvāṃ kuśalaṃ gṛhe॥ anāmayaṃ ca vāṃ kaccitsadaiveha śarīrayoḥ॥03-204-14॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; च (ca) - and; तां (tāṃ) - that (feminine, i.e. worship); पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; तावुभौ (tāvubhau) - those two (both); सपुत्राभ्यां (saputrābhyāṃ) - with (your) sons; सभृत्याभ्यां (sabhṛtyābhyāṃ) - with (your) attendants; कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it (interrogative particle); वां (vāṃ) - for you two; कुशलं (kuśalaṃ) - welfare; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; अनामयं (anāmayaṃ) - no illness; च (ca) - and; वां (vāṃ) - for you two; कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it (interrogative particle); सदैव (sadaiva) - always; इह (iha) - here; शरीरयोः (śarīrayoḥ) - for (your) two bodies;]
(And having received that worship, the twice-born asked those two: With sons and with attendants, is there welfare for you two in the house? And is there always no illness here for your two bodies?)
Having received their worship, the Brahmin asked both of them, "Are you both well in your home, together with your sons and attendants? And do you always enjoy good health here in your bodies?" (03-204-14)
वृद्धावूचतुः॥
vṛddhāv ūcatuḥ॥
[वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - the two old men; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - (they) said;]
(The two old men said.)
The two old men said.
कुशलं नो गृहे विप्र भृत्यवर्गे च सर्वशः। कच्चित्त्वमप्यविघ्नेन सम्प्राप्तो भगवन्निह ॥०३-२०४-१५॥
kuśalaṃ no gṛhe vipra bhṛtyavarge ca sarvaśaḥ। kaccittvamapyavighnena samprāpto bhagavanniha ॥03-204-15॥
[कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; नः (naḥ) - of us; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; भृत्यवर्गे (bhṛtyavarge) - in the group of servants; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it (so); त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अविघ्नेन (avighnena) - without obstacle; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - have arrived; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; इह (iha) - here;]
(Welfare of us in the house, O brāhmaṇa, in the group of servants and in every way, is it so? Have you also arrived here without obstacle, O revered one?)
O brāhmaṇa, is everything well with us in the house and among the group of servants in every way? Have you too, O revered one, arrived here without any trouble? (03-204-15)

बाढमित्येव तौ विप्रः प्रत्युवाच मुदान्वितः। धर्मव्याधस्तु तं विप्रमर्थवद्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२०४-१६॥
bāḍhamityeva tau vipraḥ pratyuvāca mudānvitaḥ। dharmavyādhas tu taṃ vipram arthavad vākyam abravīt॥03-204-16॥
[बाढम् (bāḍham) - certainly; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; तौ (tau) - to them; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - filled; धर्मव्याधः (dharmavyādhaḥ) - the righteous hunter; तु (tu) - but; तं (tam) - to him; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brāhmaṇa; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Certainly, thus indeed to them the Brāhmaṇa replied, filled with joy. The righteous hunter, but, to him, the Brāhmaṇa, meaningful words spoke.)
The Brāhmaṇa replied to them joyfully, saying, “Certainly!” But the righteous hunter addressed the Brāhmaṇa with meaningful words. (03-204-16)
पिता माता च भगवन्नेतौ मे दैवतं परम्। यद्दैवतेभ्यः कर्तव्यं तदेताभ्यां करोम्यहम् ॥०३-२०४-१७॥
pitā mātā ca bhagavann etau me daivataṁ param। yad daivatebhyaḥ kartavyaṁ tad etābhyāṁ karomy aham ॥03-204-17॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; एतौ (etau) - these two; मे (me) - to me; दैवतं (daivatam) - deity; परम् (param) - supreme; यत् (yat) - which; दैवतेभ्यः (daivatebhyaḥ) - to deities; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - ought to be done; तत् (tat) - that; एताभ्यां (etābhyām) - to these two; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Father, mother, and O revered one, these two to me are the supreme deity. Which ought to be done to deities, that I do to these two.)
Father and mother, O revered one, these two are the supreme deity for me. What should be done for the deities, that I do for these two. (03-204-17)
त्रयस्त्रिंशद्यथा देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः। सम्पूज्याः सर्वलोकस्य तथा वृद्धाविमौ मम ॥०३-२०४-१८॥

[त्रयस्त्रिंशत् (trayastr̥ṃśat) - thirty-three; यथा (yathā) - as; in the way that; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शक्रपुरोगमाः (śakrapurogamāḥ) - preceded by Śakra; having Indra at their head; सम्पूज्याः (sampūjyāḥ) - worthy of worship; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the worlds; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; वृद्धौ (vr̥ddhau) - the two elders; इमौ (imau) - these two; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(As the thirty-three gods, all with Śakra at their head, are worthy of worship by all the worlds, so these two elders of mine (are worthy of worship).)
Just as all the thirty-three gods, headed by Śakra, are to be worshipped by all the worlds, so these two elders of mine are likewise to be honored. (03-204-18)
उपहारानाहरन्तो देवतानां यथा द्विजाः। कुर्वते तद्वदेताभ्यां करोम्यहमतन्द्रितः ॥०३-२०४-१९॥
upahārān āharanto devatānāṃ yathā dvijāḥ। kurvate tadvad etābhyāṃ karomy aham atandritaḥ ॥03-204-19॥

(Offerings bringing of the deities just as the twice-born do, in that manner by these two I do, I, untiring.)
Just as the twice-born bring offerings to the deities, in the same way I perform (my duties) with these two (hands), untiringly. (03-204-19)
एतौ मे परमं ब्रह्मन्पिता माता च दैवतम्। एतौ पुष्पैः फलै रत्नैस्तोषयामि सदा द्विज ॥०३-२०४-२०॥
etau me paramaṃ brahman pitā mātā ca daivatam। etau puṣpaiḥ phalai ratnaiḥ toṣayāmi sadā dvija ॥03-204-20॥
[एतौ (etau) - these two; मे (me) - my; परमं (paramam) - supreme; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divinity; एतौ (etau) - these two; पुष्पैः (puṣpaiḥ) - with flowers; फलैः (phalaiḥ) - with fruits; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with gems; तोषयामि (toṣayāmi) - I please; सदा (sadā) - always; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(These two my supreme O Brahman father mother and divinity. These two with flowers with fruits with gems I please always O twice-born.)
O Brahman, these two—my father and mother—are my supreme divinity. O twice-born, I always please these two with flowers, fruits, and gems. (03-204-20)
एतावेवाग्नयो मह्यं यान्वदन्ति मनीषिणः। यज्ञा वेदाश्च चत्वारः सर्वमेतौ मम द्विज ॥०३-२०४-२१॥
etāvevāgnayo mahyaṃ yānvadanti manīṣiṇaḥ। yajñā vedāśca catvāraḥ sarvametau mama dvija ॥03-204-21॥
[एताव् एव (etāv eva) - just these; only these; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; यान् (yān) - which; whom; वदन्ति (vadanti) - (they) say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; वेदाः च (vedāḥ ca) - and the Vedas; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतौ (etau) - these two; मम (mama) - of me; my; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born;]
(Just these fires, to me, which the wise say, sacrifices, and the four Vedas, all, these two are mine, O twice-born.)
O twice-born, those two alone which the wise call the fires—the sacrifices and the four Vedas—all these are mine. (3-204-21)
एतदर्थं मम प्राणा भार्या पुत्राः सुहृज्जनाः। सपुत्रदारः शुश्रूषां नित्यमेव करोम्यहम् ॥०३-२०४-२२॥
etadarthaṃ mama prāṇā bhāryā putrāḥ suhṛjjanāḥ। saputrādāraḥ śuśrūṣāṃ nityam eva karomy aham ॥03-204-22॥
[एतदर्थम् (etadartham) - for this purpose; मम (mama) - my; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - lives; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; सुहृत्-जनाः (suhṛt-janāḥ) - friend-people; friends; सपुत्र-दारः (saputra-dāraḥ) - with sons and wife; शुश्रूषाम् (śuśrūṣām) - service; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(For this purpose, my lives, wife, sons, friends; with sons and wife, service, always indeed, I do, I.)
For this purpose, I always serve—along with my wife and sons, my life, my friends; I do indeed perform service always. (03-204-22)
स्वयं च स्नापयाम्येतौ तथा पादौ प्रधावये। आहारं सम्प्रयच्छामि स्वयं च द्विजसत्तम ॥०३-२०४-२३॥
svayaṃ ca snāpayāmyetau tathā pādau pradhāvaye. āhāraṃ samprayacchāmi svayaṃ ca dvijasattama ॥03-204-23॥
[स्वयं (svayaṃ) - myself; च (ca) - and; स्नापयामि (snāpayāmi) - I cause to bathe; एतौ (etau) - these two; तथा (tathā) - thus; पादौ (pādau) - the feet; प्रधावये (pradhāvaye) - I cause to be washed; आहारं (āhāraṃ) - food; सम्प्रयच्छामि (samprayacchāmi) - I offer; स्वयं (svayaṃ) - myself; च (ca) - and; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(Myself and I cause these two to bathe, thus the feet I cause to be washed. Food I offer myself, and O best of the twice-born.)
I personally bathe these two, wash their feet, and also offer them food myself, O best of the twice-born. (03-204-23)
अनुकूलाः कथा वच्मि विप्रियं परिवर्जयन्। अधर्मेणापि संयुक्तं प्रियमाभ्यां करोम्यहम् ॥०३-२०४-२४॥
anukūlāḥ kathā vacmi vipriyaṃ parivarjayan। adharmenāpi saṃyuktaṃ priyamābhyāṃ karomyaham ॥03-204-24॥
[अनुकूलाः (anukūlāḥ) - favorable things; कथा (kathā) - words; वच्मि (vacmi) - I speak; विप्रियं (vipriyaṃ) - unpleasant; परिवर्जयन् (parivarjayan) - avoiding; अधर्मेणापि (adharmenāpi) - even with unrighteousness; संयुक्तं (saṃyuktaṃ) - joined; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; आभ्याम् (ābhyām) - for both (of you); करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Favorable words I speak, avoiding unpleasant; even if joined with unrighteousness, dear for both of you, I do, I.)
I say what is agreeable, avoiding what is unpleasant; even if something dear to both of you is joined with unrighteousness, I do it. (03-204-24)
धर्ममेव गुरुं ज्ञात्वा करोमि द्विजसत्तम। अतन्द्रितः सदा विप्र शुश्रूषां वै करोम्यहम् ॥०३-२०४-२५॥
dharmam-eva guruṃ jñātvā karomi dvijasattama। atandritaḥ sadā vipra śuśrūṣāṃ vai karomy-aham ॥03-204-25॥
[धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (eva) - indeed; गुरुम् (guruṃ) - teacher; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; करोमि (karomi) - I do; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without negligence; सदा (sadā) - always; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; शुश्रूषाम् (śuśrūṣām) - service; वै (vai) - indeed; करोम्यहम् (karomy-aham) - I perform;]
(Having known dharma indeed as the teacher, I do, O best of twice-born. Without negligence always, O Brāhmaṇa, service indeed I perform.)
Recognizing dharma itself as the true teacher, O best of the twice-born, I act accordingly. Without negligence, O Brāhmaṇa, I always render service indeed. (03-204-25)
पञ्चैव गुरवो ब्रह्मन्पुरुषस्य बुभूषतः। पिता माताग्निरात्मा च गुरुश्च द्विजसत्तम ॥०३-२०४-२६॥
pañcaiva guravo brahmanpuruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ। pitā mātāgnirātmā ca guruśca dvijasattama ॥03-204-26॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; एव (eva) - indeed; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - teachers; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; बुभूषतः (bubhūṣataḥ) - desiring to live; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; च (ca) - and; गुरुः (guruḥ) - preceptor; च (ca) - and; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
(Five indeed teachers O Brāhmaṇa of a man desiring to live: father, mother, fire, self, and preceptor, and O best of twice-born.)
O Brāhmaṇa, for a man desiring to live, there are indeed five teachers: father, mother, fire, self, and preceptor, O best of twice-born. (03-204-26)
एतेषु यस्तु वर्तेत सम्यगेव द्विजोत्तम। भवेयुरग्नयस्तस्य परिचीर्णास्तु नित्यशः ॥ गार्हस्थ्ये वर्तमानस्य धर्म एष सनातनः ॥०३-२०४-२७॥
eteṣu yastu varteta samyageva dvijottama। bhaveyuragnayastasya paricīrṇāstu nityaśaḥ ॥ gārhasthye vartamānasya dharma eṣa sanātanaḥ ॥03-204-27॥
[एतेषु (eteṣu) - in these; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; वर्तेत (varteta) - should act; सम्यक्-एव (samyak-eva) - properly indeed; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - would become; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; तस्य (tasya) - his; परिचीर्णाः (paricīrṇāḥ) - well-maintained; तु (tu) - indeed; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; गार्हस्थ्ये (gārhasthye) - in householder stage; वर्तमानस्य (vartamānasya) - of the one abiding; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(In these, who but should act properly indeed, O best of twice-born, would become his fires well-maintained indeed always. In the householder stage, of the one abiding, this duty is eternal. (03-204-27))
O best of the twice-born, among these duties, he who acts properly would always have his sacred fires well-maintained. This is the eternal duty of one abiding in the householder stage. (03-204-27)
