yudhiṣṭhiravacaḥ śrutvā bhīmasenapurogamāḥ। prahṛṣṭavadanāḥ sarve samuttasthurnararṣabhāḥ ॥03-233-1॥

अभेद्यानि ततः सर्वे समनह्यन्त भारत। जाम्बूनदविचित्राणि कवचानि महारथाः ॥०३-२३३-२॥
abhedyāni tataḥ sarve samanahyanta bhārata. jāmbūnadavicittrāṇi kavacāni mahārathāḥ ॥03-233-2॥

Then all the great chariot-warriors put on their impenetrable armor, adorned with Jāmbūnada gold, O Bhārata. (03-233-2)
ते दंशिता रथैः सर्वे ध्वजिनः सशरासनाः। पाण्डवाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त ज्वलिता इव पावकाः ॥०३-२३३-३॥
te daṁśitā rathaiḥ sarve dhvajinaḥ sa-śarāsanāḥ। pāṇḍavāḥ pratyadṛśyanta jvalitā iva pāvakāḥ॥03-233-3॥

(They, armed with chariots, all bearing banners, with bows and arrows—the Pāṇḍavas appeared blazing like fires.)
The Pāṇḍavas, all armed in their chariots, bearing banners and bows, appeared blazing like fires. (03-233-3)
तान्रथान्साधु सम्पन्नान्संयुक्ताञ्जवनैर्हयैः। आस्थाय रथशार्दूलाः शीघ्रमेव ययुस्ततः ॥०३-२३३-४॥
tān rathān sādhu sampannān saṁyuktān javanair hayaiḥ। āsthāya rathaśārdūlāḥ śīghram eva yayus tataḥ॥03-233-4॥

(Those chariots, well-equipped, joined with swift horses, mounting (them), the tiger-like charioteers quickly indeed went from there.)
The tiger-like charioteers quickly mounted those well-equipped chariots, joined with swift horses, and departed from there. (03-233-4)
ततः कौरवसैन्यानां प्रादुरासीन्महास्वनः। प्रयातान्सहितान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रान्महारथान् ॥०३-२३३-५॥
tataḥ kauravasainyānāṃ prādurāsīn mahāsvanaḥ। prayātān sahitān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrān mahārathān ॥03-233-5॥

(Then, of the armies of the Kauravas, arose a great sound, having seen the sons of Paṇḍu, great chariot-warriors, proceeding together.)
Then, seeing the sons of Paṇḍu, the great chariot-warriors, proceeding together, a great uproar arose among the armies of the Kauravas. (03-233-5)
जितकाशिनश्च खचरास्त्वरिताश्च महारथाः। क्षणेनैव वने तस्मिन्समाजग्मुरभीतवत् ॥०३-२३३-६॥
jitakāśinaś ca khakarāś tvaritāś ca mahārathāḥ। kṣaṇenaiva vane tasmin samājagmur abhītavat ॥03-233-6॥
[जितकाशिनः (jitakāśinaḥ) - conquerors of Kāśi; च (ca) - and; खचराः (khacarāḥ) - those who move in the sky; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - swift ones; च (ca) - and; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; एव (eva) - indeed; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - came together; अभीतवत् (abhītavat) - like those without fear;]
(Conquerors of Kāśi and those who move in the sky, swift and great chariot-warriors, in a moment indeed in that forest, came together like those without fear.)
The conquerors of Kāśi and the sky-traveling, swift great chariot-warriors all assembled in that forest in an instant, as if they were unafraid. (03-233-6)
न्यवर्तन्त ततः सर्वे गन्धर्वा जितकाशिनः। दृष्ट्वा रथगतान्वीरान्पाण्डवांश्चतुरो रणे ॥०३-२३३-७॥
nyavartanta tataḥ sarve gandharvā jitakāśinaḥ। dṛṣṭvā rathagatān vīrān pāṇḍavāṃś caturō raṇe ॥03-233-7॥
[न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - turned back; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; जितकाशिनः (jitakāśinaḥ) - those who have conquered Kāśi; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रथगतान् (rathagatān) - mounted on chariots; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - the four; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Then all the Gandharvas who conquered Kāśi turned back, having seen the heroes, the four Pāṇḍavas, mounted on chariots in battle.)
Then all the Gandharvas, conquerors of Kāśi, retreated when they saw the four heroic Pāṇḍavas on their chariots in battle. (03-233-7)
तांस्तु विभ्राजतो दृष्ट्वा लोकपालानिवोद्यतान्। व्यूढानीका व्यतिष्ठन्त गन्धमादनवासिनः ॥०३-२३३-८॥
tāṃs tu vibhrājato dṛṣṭvā lokapālān iva udyatān। vyūḍhānīkā vyatiṣṭhanta gandhamādanavāsinaḥ॥03-233-8॥
[ताम् (tām) - them; (accusative plural of 'tad') ; तु (tu) - but; however; विभ्राजतः (vibhrājataḥ) - shining; resplendent; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; लोकपालानिव (lokapālān iva) - like guardians of the world; as if world-protectors; उद्यतान् (udyatān) - armed; raised (ready for action); व्यूढानीका (vyūḍhānīkāḥ) - having arrayed their troops; व्यतिष्ठन्त (vyatiṣṭhanta) - they stationed themselves; they stood; गन्धमादनवासिनः (gandhamādanavāsinaḥ) - the dwellers of Gandhamādana;]
(But having seen them shining, armed like guardians of the world, the dwellers of Gandhamādana, having arrayed their troops, stood firm.)
But when they saw them, resplendent and arrayed like the guardians of the world in readiness, the dwellers of Gandhamādana marshaled their forces and took their stand. (03-233-8)
राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। क्रमेण मृदुना युद्धमुपक्रामन्त भारत ॥०३-२३३-९॥
rājñastu vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ। krameṇa mṛdunā yuddhamupakrāmanta bhārata ॥03-233-9॥
[राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; मृदुना (mṛdunā) - gentle; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; उपक्रामन्त (upakrāmanta) - they commenced; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(But having heard the speech of the king, of the wise Dharmarāja, in order, with gentleness, the battle they commenced, O Bhārata.)
But, O Bhārata, having heard the words of the wise Dharmarāja, they then began the battle in an orderly and gentle manner. (03-233-9)
न तु गन्धर्वराजस्य सैनिका मन्दचेतसः। शक्यन्ते मृदुना श्रेयः प्रतिपादयितुं तदा ॥०३-२३३-१०॥
na tu gandharvarājasya sainikā mandacētasaḥ। śakyantē mṛdunā śrēyaḥ pratipādayituṃ tadā ॥03-233-10॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वराजस्य (gandharvarājasya) - of the king of gandharvas; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; मन्दचेतसः (mandacētasaḥ) - of slow intellect; शक्यन्ते (śakyantē) - are able; मृदुना (mṛdunā) - by gentleness; श्रियः (śrēyaḥ) - good (welfare); प्रतिपादयितुं (pratipādayituṃ) - to cause to be attained; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Not but of the king of gandharvas the soldiers of slow intellect are able by gentleness good to cause to be attained then.)
But the soldiers of the king of the gandharvas, being slow-witted, were not then able to bring about good by gentle means. (03-233-10)
ततस्तान्युधि दुर्धर्षः सव्यसाची परन्तपः। सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वाक्यमुवाच खचरान्रणे ॥०३-२३३-११॥
tatastānyudhi durdharṣaḥ savyasācī parantapaḥ। sāntvapūrvamidaṃ vākyamuvāca khacarāṃraṇe ॥03-233-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - them; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - irresistible; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - ambidextrous (Arjuna); परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - preceded by conciliation; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - said; खचरान् (khacarān) - chariot-riders; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Then them in battle the irresistible, ambidextrous (Arjuna), scorcher of foes, preceded by conciliation, this speech said to the chariot-riders in battle.)
Then the irresistible, ambidextrous Arjuna, the scorcher of foes, first conciliated and said this speech to the chariot-riders in battle. (03-233-11)
नैतद्गन्धर्वराजस्य युक्तं कर्म जुगुप्सितम्। परदाराभिमर्शश्च मानुषैश्च समागमः ॥०३-२३३-१२॥
naitadgandharvarājasya yuktaṃ karma jugupsitam। paradārābhimarśaśca mānuṣaiśca samāgamaḥ ॥03-233-12॥
[न एतत् (na etat) - not this; गन्धर्वराजस्य (gandharvarājasya) - of the king of Gandharvas; युक्तम् (yuktam) - befitting; appropriate; कर्म (karma) - act; deed; जुगुप्सितम् (jugupsitam) - despicable; detestable; परदार-अभिमर्शः (paradāra-abhimarśaḥ) - touching another's wife; association with another's wife; च (ca) - and; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - with humans; with men; च (ca) - and; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - association; intercourse;]
(Not this of the king of Gandharvas befitting act, despicable: touching another's wife and with men also association.)
This act is not befitting the king of the Gandharvas; touching another's wife and association with humans are both despicable. (03-233-12)
उत्सृजध्वं महावीर्यान्धृतराष्ट्रसुतानिमान्। दारांश्चैषां विमुञ्चध्वं धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥०३-२३३-१३॥
utsṛjadhvaṁ mahāvīryān dhṛtarāṣṭrasutān imān। dārāṁś ca eṣāṁ vimuñcadhvaṁ dharmarājasya śāsanāt ॥03-233-13॥
[उत्सृजध्वं (utsṛjadhvaṁ) - release (you all); महावीर्यान् (mahāvīryān) - having great valor; धृतराष्ट्रसुतान् (dhṛtarāṣṭrasutān) - Dhritarashtra's sons; इमान् (imān) - these; दारान् (dārān) - wives; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; विमुञ्चध्वं (vimuñcadhvaṁ) - let go (you all); धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command;]
(Release (you all) these sons of Dhritarashtra of great valor; and the wives of these, let go (you all), by the command of Dharmaraja.)
Release these mighty sons of Dhritarashtra, and free their wives too, in accordance with the order of Dharmaraja. (03-233-13)
एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वाः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना। उत्स्मयन्तस्तदा पार्थमिदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥०३-२३३-१४॥
evam uktās tu gandharvāḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā। utsmayantas tadā pārtham idaṃ vacanam abruvan ॥03-233-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the Pāṇḍava; यशस्विना (yaśasvinā) - by the illustrious; उत्स्मयन्तः (utsmayantaḥ) - smiling; तदा (tadā) - then; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - spoke;]
(Thus addressed but the Gandharvas by the illustrious Pāṇḍava, smiling then to Pārtha this words spoke.)
Thus, when addressed by the illustrious Pāṇḍava, the Gandharvas then, smiling, spoke these words to Pārtha. (03-233-14)
एकस्यैव वयं तात कुर्याम वचनं भुवि। यस्य शासनमाज्ञाय चराम विगतज्वराः ॥०३-२३३-१५॥
ekasyaiva vayaṃ tāta kuryāma vacanaṃ bhuvi। yasya śāsanamājñāya carāma vigatajvarāḥ ॥03-233-15॥
[एकस्यैव (ekasyaiva) - of one only; वयम् (vayam) - we; तात (tāta) - father; dear one; कुर्याम (kuryāma) - should do; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; command; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; यस्य (yasya) - whose; शासनम् (śāsanam) - order; instruction; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; having obeyed; चराम (carāma) - we should act; we go; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from anxiety; with all agitation gone;]
(Of one only we, father, should do the word on earth. Whose order having understood we should act, free from anxiety.)
Father, we should obey only one person’s word on earth—having understood whose command, we may act, free from anxiety. (03-233-15)
तेनैकेन यथादिष्टं तथा वर्ताम भारत। न शास्ता विद्यतेऽस्माकमन्यस्तस्मात्सुरेश्वरात् ॥०३-२३३-१६॥
tenaikena yathādiṣṭaṃ tathā vartāma bhārata। na śāstā vidyate'smākam anyas tasmāt sureśvarāt॥03-233-16॥
[तेनैकेन (tenaikena) - by him alone; यथा (yathā) - as; अदिष्टम् (adiṣṭam) - instructed; तथा (tathā) - so; वर्ताम (vartāma) - we act; we conduct ourselves; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; शास्ता (śāstā) - ruler; governor; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - for us; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other (one); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - other than; besides; सुरेश्वरात् (sureśvarāt) - the lord of the gods;]
(By him alone, as instructed, so we act, O Bhārata. Not a ruler exists for us other than the lord of the gods.)
O Bhārata, as instructed by him alone, so do we act; there is for us no other ruler but the lord of the gods. (03-233-16)
एवमुक्तस्तु गन्धर्वैः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। गन्धर्वान्पुनरेवेदं वचनं प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-२३३-१७॥
evam-uktas tu gandharvaiḥ kuntī-putro dhanañjayaḥ। gandharvān punar evedaṃ vacanaṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥03-233-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - the son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - to the Gandharvas; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनं (vacanam) - word; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - spoke in reply;]
(Thus addressed but by the Gandharvas, Kuntī’s son Dhanañjaya to the Gandharvas again indeed this word spoke in reply.)
Thus, when addressed by the Gandharvas, Kuntī's son Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) again spoke these words in reply to the Gandharvas. (03-233-17)
यदि साम्ना न मोक्षध्वं गन्धर्वा धृतराष्ट्रजम्। मोक्षयिष्यामि विक्रम्य स्वयमेव सुयोधनम् ॥०३-२३३-१८॥
yadi sāmnā na mokṣadhvaṃ gandharvā dhṛtarāṣṭrajam। mokṣayiṣyāmi vikramya svayameva suyodhanam॥03-233-18॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; साम्ना (sāmnā) - by conciliation; न (na) - not; मोक्षध्वं (mokṣadhvaṃ) - you (plural) release; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - O Gandharvas; धृतराष्ट्रजम् (dhṛtarāṣṭrajam) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; मोक्षयिष्यामि (mokṣayiṣyāmi) - I will release; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having conquered; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; एव (eva) - indeed; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana (proper name for Duryodhana);]
(If by conciliation you do not release, O Gandharvas, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, I will release Suyodhana having conquered indeed myself.)
If you do not release the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra by peaceful means, O Gandharvas, then I myself will free Suyodhana by force. (03-233-18)
एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थः सव्यसाची धनञ्जयः। ससर्ज निशितान्बाणान्खचरान्खचरान्प्रति ॥०३-२३३-१९॥
evam uktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ savyasācī dhanañjayaḥ। sasarja niśitān bāṇān khacarān khacarān prati॥03-233-19॥
[एवम् (evam) (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) (uktvā) - having said; ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) (savyasācī) - ambidextrous one; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; ससर्ज (sasarja) (sasarja) - discharged; निशितान् (niśitān) (niśitān) - sharp; बाणान् (bāṇān) (bāṇān) - arrows; खचरान् (khacarān) (khacarān) - chariot-riders; खचरान् (khacarān) (khacarān) - chariot-riders; प्रति (prati) (prati) - towards;]
(Thus having said, then Pārtha, the ambidextrous one, Dhanañjaya, discharged sharp arrows towards the chariot-riders, the chariot-riders.)
Having spoken thus, then Pārtha, the ambidextrous Dhanañjaya, shot sharp arrows at the chariot-fighters.
तथैव शरवर्षेण गन्धर्वास्ते बलोत्कटाः। पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त पाण्डवाश्च दिवौकसः ॥०३-२३३-२०॥
tathaiva śaravarṣeṇa gandharvāste balotkaṭāḥ। pāṇḍavānabhyavartanta pāṇḍavāśca divaukasāḥ॥03-233-20॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; just so; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; ते (te) - they; बलोत्कटाः (balotkaṭāḥ) - strong; very powerful; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अभ्यवर्तन्त (abhyavartanta) - advanced upon; approached; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; दिवौकसः (divaukasāḥ) - celestials; dwellers in heaven;]
(Just so, with a shower of arrows, those very powerful Gandharvas advanced upon the Pāṇḍavas; and the Pāṇḍavas (fought with) the celestials.)
In the same manner, those mighty Gandharvas attacked the Pāṇḍavas with a shower of arrows, and the Pāṇḍavas fought against the celestial beings. (03-233-20)
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं गन्धर्वाणां तरस्विनाम्। बभूव भीमवेगानां पाण्डवानां च भारत ॥०३-२३३-२१॥
tataḥ sutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ gandharvāṇāṃ tarasvinām। babhūva bhīmavegānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca bhārata॥03-233-21॥
