यथा कर्णस्य च रथो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य चोभयोः। गन्धर्वैः शतशश्छिन्नौ तथा तेषां प्रचक्रिरे ॥०३-२३४-३॥

तान्समापततो राजन्गन्धर्वाञ्शतशो रणे। प्रत्यगृह्णन्नरव्याघ्राः शरवर्षैरनेकशः ॥०३-२३४-४॥

अवकीर्यमाणाः खगमाः शरवर्षैः समन्ततः। न शेकुः पाण्डुपुत्राणां समीपे परिवर्तितुम् ॥०३-२३४-५॥
avakīryamāṇāḥ khagamāḥ śara-varṣaiḥ samantataḥ। na śekuḥ pāṇḍu-putrāṇāṃ samīpe parivartitum ॥03-234-5॥

अभिक्रुद्धानभिप्रेक्ष्य गन्धर्वानर्जुनस्तदा। लक्षयित्वाथ दिव्यानि महास्त्राण्युपचक्रमे ॥०३-२३४-६॥

Then Arjuna, having observed the enraged Gandharvas, discerned this and began to use the divine great weapons. (03-234-6)
सहस्राणां सहस्रं स प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम्। आग्नेयेनार्जुनः सङ्ख्ये गन्धर्वाणां बलोत्कटः ॥०३-२३४-७॥
sahasrāṇāṃ sahasraṃ sa prāhiṇodyamasādanam। āgneyenārjunaḥ saṅkhye gandharvāṇāṃ balotkaṭaḥ ॥03-234-7॥

तथा भीमो महेष्वासः संयुगे बलिनां वरः। गन्धर्वाञ्शतशो राजञ्जघान निशितैः शरैः ॥०३-२३४-८॥
tathā bhīmo maheṣvāsaḥ saṃyuge balināṃ varaḥ। gandharvāñśataśo rājañjaghāna niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥03-234-8॥

माद्रीपुत्रावपि तथा युध्यमानौ बलोत्कटौ। परिगृह्याग्रतो राजञ्जघ्नतुः शतशः परान् ॥०३-२३४-९॥
mādrīputrāv api tathā yudhyamānau balotkaṭau। parigṛhyāgrato rājan jaghnatuḥ śataśaḥ parān ॥03-234-9॥

te vadhyamānā gandharvā divyairastrairmahātmabhiḥ. utpetuḥ kham-upādāya dhṛtarāṣṭra-sutām-stataḥ ॥03-234-10॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमाना (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; गन्धर्वा (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - divine; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with weapons; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled ones; उत्पेतुः (utpetuḥ) - sprang/flew up; खम् (kham) - sky; उपादाय (upādāya) - taking with them; धृतराष्ट्रसुतान् (dhṛtarāṣṭra-sutān) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(They, the Gandharvas, being slain by divine weapons by the great-souled ones, sprang up into the sky, taking with them the sons of Dhritarashtra from there.)
The Gandharvas, being struck down by the great-souled warriors with divine weapons, quickly rose into the sky, carrying the sons of Dhritarashtra away from that place. (03-234-10)
तानुत्पतिष्णून्बुद्ध्वा तु कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। महता शरजालेन समन्तात्पर्यवारयत् ॥०३-२३४-११॥
tān utpatiṣṇūn buddhvā tu kuntī-putro dhanañjayaḥ। mahatā śara-jālena samantāt paryavārayat॥03-234-11॥
[तान् (tān) - those; उत्पतिष्णून् (utpatiṣṇūn) - about to leap; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having perceived; तु (tu) - but; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - the son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); महता (mahatā) - with a great; शरजालेन (śara-jālena) - array of arrows; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; पर्ववारयत् (paryavārayat) - he surrounded;]
(Those about to leap, having perceived, but the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, with a great array of arrows, on all sides, he surrounded.)
But Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī, perceiving those (enemies) about to leap forth, surrounded them on all sides with a great array of arrows. (03-234-11)
ते बद्धाः शरजालेन शकुन्ता इव पञ्जरे। ववर्षुरर्जुनं क्रोधाद्गदाशक्त्यृष्टिवृष्टिभिः ॥०३-२३४-१२॥
te baddhāḥ śarajālena śakuntā iva pañjare। vavarṣur arjunaṃ krodhād gadāśakty ṛṣṭivṛṣṭibhiḥ॥03-234-12॥
[ते (te) - they; बद्धाः (baddhāḥ) - bound; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - by a net of arrows; शकुन्ता (śakuntāḥ) - birds; इव (iva) - like; पञ्जरे (pañjare) - in a cage; ववर्षुः (vavarṣuḥ) - they showered; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - upon Arjuna; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - out of anger; गदा (gadā) - maces; शक्ति (śakti) - lances; ऋष्टि (ṛṣṭi) - spears; वृष्टिभिः (vṛṣṭibhiḥ) - with showers;]
(They bound by a net of arrows, like birds in a cage, showered upon Arjuna, out of anger, with showers of maces, lances, and spears.)
Bound by a net of arrows like birds in a cage, they angrily showered Arjuna with a rain of maces, lances, and spears. (03-234-12)
गदाशक्त्यसिवृष्टीस्ता निहत्य स महास्त्रवित्। गात्राणि चाहनद्भल्लैर्गन्धर्वाणां धनञ्जयः ॥०३-२३४-१३॥
gadā-śakty-asi-vṛṣṭīḥ tā nihatya sa mahāstravit। gātrāṇi ca ahanat bhallaiḥ gandharvāṇāṃ dhanañjayaḥ ॥03-234-13॥
[गदाशक्त्यसिवृष्टीः (gadā-śakty-asi-vṛṣṭīḥ) - mace, spear, and sword showers; ता (tā) - those; निहत्य (nihatya) - having struck down; स (sa) - he; महास्त्रवित् (mahāstra-vit) - knower of great weapons; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - the bodies; च (ca) - and; अहनत् (ahanat) - he struck; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - with arrows; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Having struck down those showers of maces, spears, and swords, he, the knower of great weapons, Dhananjaya, also struck the bodies of the Gandharvas with arrows.)

शिरोभिः प्रपतद्भिश्च चरणैर्बाहुभिस्तथा। अश्मवृष्टिरिवाभाति परेषामभवद्भयम् ॥०३-२३४-१४॥
śirobhiḥ prapatadbhiśca caraṇairbāhubhistathā। aśmavṛṣṭirivābhāti pareṣāmabhavadbhayam ॥03-234-14॥

(With heads, with falling, and with feet, with arms also, like a shower of stones appears; for the others there was fear.)
The sight of heads, arms, and feet falling and scattered everywhere, appearing like a shower of stones, caused fear among the others. (03-234-14)
ते वध्यमाना गन्धर्वाः पाण्डवेन महात्मना। भूमिष्ठमन्तरिक्षस्थाः शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥०३-२३४-१५॥
te vadhyamānā gandharvāḥ pāṇḍavena mahātmanā। bhūmiṣṭham antarikṣasthāḥ śaravarṣair avākiran ॥03-234-15॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमाना (vadhyamānāḥ) - being struck; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; भूमिष्ठम् (bhūmiṣṭham) - on the ground; अन्तरिक्षस्थाः (antarikṣasthāḥ) - those standing in the sky; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; अवाकिरन् (avākiran) - covered;]
(They, being struck, the Gandharvas, by the son of Pāṇḍu, the great-souled, on the ground and those standing in the sky, with showers of arrows, covered.)
Those Gandharvas, being struck by the great-souled son of Pandu, covered both those on the ground and those in the air with showers of arrows. (03-234-15)
तेषां तु शरवर्षाणि सव्यसाची परन्तपः। अस्त्रैः संवार्य तेजस्वी गन्धर्वान्प्रत्यविध्यत ॥०३-२३४-१६॥
teṣāṃ tu śaravarṣāṇi savyasācī parantapaḥ। astraiḥ saṃvārya tejasvī gandharvān pratyavidhyata ॥03-234-16॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तु (tu) - but; शरवर्षाणि (śara-varṣāṇi) - arrows-showers; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasāci (Arjuna); परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of enemies; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with weapons; संवार्य (saṃvārya) - having warded off; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - energetic; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; प्रत्यविध्यत (pratyavidhyata) - pierced back;]
(Of them but arrows-showers Savyasāci the scorcher of enemies with weapons having warded off energetic the Gandharvas pierced back.)
But Savyasāci, the energetic scorcher of enemies, warded off the showers of arrows of those (Gandharvas) with weapons and struck back at the Gandharvas. (03-234-16)
स्थूणाकर्णेन्द्रजालं च सौरं चापि तथार्जुनः। आग्नेयं चापि सौम्यं च ससर्ज कुरुनन्दनः ॥०३-२३४-१७॥
sthūṇā-karṇendrajālaṃ ca sauraṃ cāpi tathārjunaḥ। āgneyaṃ cāpi saumyaṃ ca sasarja kurunandanaḥ॥03-234-17॥
[स्थूणाकर्णेन्द्रजालं (sthūṇā-karṇendrajālam) - pillar (sthūṇā) - ear (karṇa) - magical net (indra-jāla); च (ca) - and; सौरं (sauraṃ) - relating to the sun; चापि (cāpi) - and also; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; आग्नेयं (āgneyaṃ) - relating to Agni (fire); चापि (cāpi) - and also; सौम्यं (saumyaṃ) - relating to Soma (the moon); च (ca) - and; ससर्ज (sasarja) - created; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - O delight of the Kurus (Arjuna);]

And Arjuna, O delight of the Kurus, then created the pillar-magical net, as well as solar, fire, and moon-related (weapons or illusions). (03-234-17)
ते दह्यमाना गन्धर्वाः कुन्तीपुत्रस्य सायकैः। दैतेया इव शक्रेण विषादमगमन्परम् ॥०३-२३४-१८॥
te dahyamānā gandharvāḥ kuntīputrasya sāyakaiḥ। daiteyā iva śakreṇa viṣādamagaman param ॥03-234-18॥
[ते (te) - they; दह्यमाना (dahyamānāḥ) - being burned; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; कुन्तीपुत्रस्य (kuntīputrasya) - of Kuntī's son; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - by arrows; दैतेया (daiteyāḥ) - Daityas; इव (iva) - like; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); विषादम् (viṣādam) - despondency; अगमन् (agaman) - attained; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(They, being burned Gandharvas by Kuntī's son's arrows, like Daityas by Śakra, supreme despondency attained.)
Those Gandharvas, scorched by the arrows of Kuntī's son, fell into great despair, just like the Daityas did when defeated by Śakra (Indra). (03-234-18)
ऊर्ध्वमाक्रममाणाश्च शरजालेन वारिताः। विसर्पमाणा भल्लैश्च वार्यन्ते सव्यसाचिना ॥०३-२३४-१९॥
ūrdhvamākramamāṇāś ca śarajālena vāritāḥ। visarpamāṇā bhallaiś ca vāryante savyasācinā॥03-234-19॥
[ऊर्ध्वम् आक्रममाणाः (ūrdhvam ākramamāṇāḥ) - ascending upwards; moving upwards; च (ca) - and; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - by a multitude of arrows; वारिताः (vāritāḥ) - prevented; (they are) stopped; विसर्पमाणाः (visarpamāṇāḥ) - spreading out; dispersing; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - by broad-headed arrows; च (ca) - and; वार्यन्ते (vāryante) - are checked; are resisted; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Ascending upwards and (they) are prevented by a multitude of arrows; those dispersing are checked by broad-headed arrows by Savyasācin (Arjuna).)
Those ascending upwards are stopped by a shower of arrows, and those spreading out are checked by Arjuna's broad-headed shafts. (03-234-19)
गन्धर्वांस्त्रासितान्दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीपुत्रेण धीमता। चित्रसेनो गदां गृह्य सव्यसाचिनमाद्रवत् ॥०३-२३४-२०॥
gandharvāṁstrāsitāndṛṣṭvā kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā। citraseno gadāṁ gṛhya savyasācinamādravat ॥03-234-20॥

When Citraseṇa saw the Gandharvas being frightened by the wise son of Kuntī, he took up his mace and rushed toward Savyasācin (Arjuna). (03-234-20)
तस्याभिपततस्तूर्णं गदाहस्तस्य संयुगे। गदां सर्वायसीं पार्थः शरैश्चिच्छेद सप्तधा ॥०३-२३४-२१॥
tasyābhipatatastūrṇaṃ gadāhastasya saṃyuge. gadāṃ sarvāyasīṃ pārthaḥ śaraiś ciccheda saptadhā ॥03-234-21॥

(Of him, advancing rapidly, having the mace in his hand, in battle. The mace entirely of iron, Pārtha with arrows cut into seven parts.)
As he rapidly advanced in battle, mace in hand, Pārtha (Arjuna) cut the iron mace into seven pieces with his arrows. (03-234-21)
स गदां बहुधा दृष्ट्वा कृत्तां बाणैस्तरस्विना। संवृत्य विद्ययात्मानं योधयामास पाण्डवम् ॥ अस्त्राणि तस्य दिव्यानि योधयामास खे स्थितः ॥०३-२३४-२२॥
sa gadāṃ bahudhā dṛṣṭvā kṛttāṃ bāṇais tarasvinā। saṃvṛtya vidyayātmānaṃ yodhayām āsa pāṇḍavam॥ astrāṇi tasya divyāni yodhayām āsa khe sthitaḥ॥03-234-22॥

(He, having seen the mace cut in many ways by the energetic one's arrows, having enveloped himself by knowledge, engaged in battle with the Pāṇḍava. The divine weapons of his he fought, standing in the sky.)
He saw his mace cut to pieces in many ways by the energetic one's arrows. Enveloping himself with knowledge, he engaged in battle with the Pāṇḍava. Standing in the sky, he fought with his divine weapons. (03-234-22)
गन्धर्वराजो बलवान्माययान्तर्हितस्तदा। अन्तर्हितं समालक्ष्य प्रहरन्तमथार्जुनः ॥ ताडयामास खचरैर्दिव्यास्त्रप्रतिमन्त्रितैः ॥०३-२३४-२३॥
gandharvarājo balavān māyayā antarhitas tadā। antarhitaṃ samālakṣya praharantam athārjunaḥ ॥ tāḍayāmāsa khacarair divyāstrapratimantritaiḥ ॥03-234-23॥
[गन्धर्वराजः (gandharvarājaḥ) - Gandharva king; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - having become invisible; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्तर्हितम् (antarhitam) - the invisible; समालक्ष्य (samālakṣya) - having observed; प्रहरन्तम् (praharantam) - attacking; अथ (atha) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; ताडयामास (tāḍayāmāsa) - struck; खचरैः (khacaraiḥ) - with sky-movers; दिव्यास्त्र (divyāstra) - divine weapons; प्रतिमन्त्रितैः (pratimantritaiḥ) - having been invoked (with mantras); ॥०३-२३४-२३॥ (॥03-234-23॥) - ;]
(Gandharva king powerful by illusion having become invisible then, the invisible having observed attacking then Arjuna struck with sky-movers with divine weapons having been invoked (with mantras).)
Then the powerful Gandharva king, having become invisible by his illusion, as Arjuna saw the invisible one attacking, struck him with chariot warriors using divine weapons that had been invoked with mantras. (03-234-23)
अन्तर्धानवधं चास्य चक्रे क्रुद्धोऽर्जुनस्तदा। शब्दवेध्यमुपाश्रित्य बहुरूपो धनञ्जयः ॥०३-२३४-२४॥
antardhānavadhaṃ cāsya cakre kruddho'rjunastadā। śabdavedhyamupāśritya bahurūpo dhanañjayaḥ ॥03-234-24॥
[अन्तर्धानवधं (antardhānavadhaṃ) - the slaying of one who has disappeared; (antardhāna - disappearance, vadham - killing;) च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; चक्रे (cakre) - (he) made; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तदा (tadā) - then; शब्दवेध्यम् (śabdavedhyam) - target that is to be pierced by sound; (śabda - sound, vedhya - to be pierced;) उपाश्रित्य (upāśritya) - having resorted to; बहुरूपः (bahurūpaḥ) - having many forms; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya;]
(The slaying of one who has disappeared and of him (Arjuna), being angry, then he made. Having resorted to the target that is to be pierced by sound, the many-formed Dhanañjaya.)
Then, angry Arjuna, also called Dhanañjaya of many forms, committed the slaying of one who had disappeared, resorting to aiming at the target by sound. (03-234-24)
स वध्यमानस्तैरस्त्रैरर्जुनेन महात्मना। अथास्य दर्शयामास तदात्मानं प्रियः सखा ॥०३-२३४-२५॥
sa vadhyamānas tair astrair arjunena mahātmanā। athāsya darśayāmāsa tad ātmānaṃ priyaḥ sakhā ॥03-234-25॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with weapons; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - to him; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; सखा (sakhā) - friend;]
(He, being struck by those weapons by the great-souled Arjuna, then to him showed that self, the dear friend.)
While he was being struck by those weapons by Arjuna, the great soul, then his dear friend showed him his true self. (03-234-25)
चित्रसेनमथालक्ष्य सखायं युधि दुर्बलम्। सञ्जहारास्त्रमथ तत्प्रसृष्टं पाण्डवर्षभः ॥०३-२३४-२६॥
citrasenam athālakṣya sakhāyaṃ yudhi durbalam। sañjahāra astram atha tatprasṛṣṭaṃ pāṇḍavaṛṣabhaḥ ॥03-234-26॥
[चित्रसेनम् (citrasenam) - Citraseṇa (proper noun, accusative singular); अथ (atha) - then; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having perceived; सखायम् (sakhāyam) - friend (accusative singular); युधि (yudhi) - in battle; दुर्बलम् (durbalam) - weak; सञ्जहार (sañjahāra) - he released; he discharged; he struck; he destroyed; आस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon (missile); अथ (atha) - then; तत्-प्रसृष्टम् (tat-prasṛṣṭam) - that which was discharged (by him/his opponent); पाण्डवर्षभः (pāṇḍava-ṛṣabhaḥ) - the bull among the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Then, having perceived Citraseṇa's friend weak in battle, the bull among the Pāṇḍavas then destroyed the weapon that was discharged.)
Then, seeing Citraseṇa's friend weakened in battle, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas destroyed the missile that had been launched. (03-234-26)
दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवाः सर्वे संहृतास्त्रं धनञ्जयम्। सञ्जह्रुः प्रद्रुतानश्वाञ्शरवेगान्धनूंषि च ॥०३-२३४-२७॥
dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavāḥ sarve saṁhṛtāstraṁ dhanañjayam। sañjahruḥ pradrutānaśvāñ śaravegān dhanūṁṣi ca ॥03-234-27॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; संहृतास्त्रं (saṁhṛta-astraṁ) - who had withdrawn weapons; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); सञ्जह्रुः (sañjahruḥ) - joined; प्रद्रुतान् (pradrutān) - run away; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; शरवेगान् (śara-vegān) - with the speed of arrows; धनूंषि (dhanūṁṣi) - bows; च (ca) - and;]
(Having seen but Dhanañjaya, who had withdrawn weapons, all the Pāṇḍavas joined the horses that had run away (and) bows of the speed of arrows and.)
But when all the Pāṇḍavas saw Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) who had withdrawn his weapons, they rejoined their fleeing horses and their bows with the swiftness of arrows. (03-234-27)
चित्रसेनश्च भीमश्च सव्यसाची यमावपि। पृष्ट्वा कौशलमन्योन्यं रथेष्वेवावतस्थिरे ॥०३-२३४-२८॥
citrasenaś ca bhīmaś ca savyasācī yamāv api। pṛṣṭvā kauśalam anyonyaṃ ratheṣv evāvatasthire ॥03-234-28॥

(Citrasena and Bhīma and Savyasācī, the two Yamas also, having asked welfare of one another, indeed in their chariots stood.)
Citrasena, Bhīma, Savyasācī (Arjuna), and the twin sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva) also, after asking each other's welfare, took their places right on their chariots. (03-234-28)
