अथ मद्राधिपो राजा नारदेन समागतः। उपविष्टः सभामध्ये कथायोगेन भारत ॥०३-२७८-१॥
atha madrādhipo rājā nāradena samāgataḥ। upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye kathāyogena bhārata ॥03-278-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मद्राधिपः (madrādhipaḥ) - lord of Madra; राजा (rājā) - king; नारदेन (nāradena) - with Nārada; समागतः (samāgataḥ) - having come together; उपविष्टः (upaviṣṭaḥ) - seated; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; कथायोगेन (kathāyogena) - through the occasion of narration; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then the lord of Madra, the king, together with Nārada having come, was seated in the midst of the assembly through the occasion of narration, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, the king of Madra, having arrived with Nārada, sat in the middle of the assembly for the purpose of narration. (03-278-1)
ततोऽभिगम्य तीर्थानि सर्वाण्येवाश्रमांस्तथा। आजगाम पितुर्वेश्म सावित्री सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥०३-२७८-२॥
tato’bhigamya tīrthāni sarvāṇyevāśramāṃstathā. ājagāma piturveśma sāvitrī saha mantribhiḥ ॥03-278-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; आश्रमान् (āśramān) - hermitages; तथा (tathā) - also; आजगाम (ājagāma) - she came; पितुः (pituḥ) - of her father; वेश्म (veśma) - house; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Sāvitrī; सह (saha) - with; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - the ministers;]
(Then, having approached all the holy places and also the hermitages, Sāvitrī came to her father's house with the ministers.)
Then, after visiting all the holy places and hermitages, Sāvitrī returned to her father's house accompanied by the ministers. (03-278-2)
नारदेन सहासीनं दृष्ट्वा सा पितरं शुभा। उभयोरेव शिरसा चक्रे पादाभिवन्दनम् ॥०३-२७८-३॥
nāradena sahāsīnaṁ dṛṣṭvā sā pitaraṁ śubhā। ubhayoreva śirasā cakre pādābhivandanam ॥03-278-3॥

(By Nārada together with seated having seen she father auspicious one of both indeed with (her) head she did salutation to the feet.)
Seeing her father, the auspicious one, seated together with Nārada, she respectfully saluted the feet of both with her head. (03-278-3)

क्व गताभूत्सुतेयं ते कुतश्चैवागता नृप। किमर्थं युवतीं भर्त्रे न चैनां सम्प्रयच्छसि ॥०३-२७८-४॥
kva gatābhūt suteyaṁ te kutaścaivāgatā nṛpa। kimarthaṁ yuvatīṁ bhartre na caināṁ samprayacchasi ॥03-278-4॥
[क्व (kva) - where; गता (gatā) - gone; अभूत् (abhūt) - she was; सुता (sutā) - daughter; इयं (iyaṁ) - this (feminine); ते (te) - your; कुतश्च (kutaśca) - and from where; एव (eva) - indeed; आगता (āgatā) - has come; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; युवतीम् (yuvatīm) - young woman; भर्त्रे (bhartre) - to husband; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; सम्प्रयच्छसि (samprayacchasi) - you are giving;]
(Where has your daughter been, where did she go, and from where indeed has this one come, O king? For what reason do you not give this young woman to a husband, and do not give her?)
Where did your daughter go, O king, and from where indeed has she now come? For what reason do you not give this young woman to a husband? (03-278-4)
अश्वपतिरुवाच॥

[अश्वपतिः (aśvapatiḥ) - lord of horses; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The lord of horses said.)
The lord of horses said.
कार्येण खल्वनेनैव प्रेषिताद्यैव चागता। तदस्याः शृणु देवर्षे भर्तारं योऽनया वृतः ॥०३-२७८-५॥
kāryeṇa khalv anenaiva preṣitā adyaiva ca āgatā। tad asyāḥ śṛṇu devarṣe bhartāraṃ yo 'nayā vṛtaḥ॥03-278-5॥
[कार्येण (kāryeṇa) - with business; (with) task; (with) purpose; खलु (khalu) - indeed; surely; अनेन एव (anena eva) - by this very (one); प्रेषिता (preṣitā) - sent; अद्य एव (adya eva) - just today; today itself; च (ca) - and; आगता (āgatā) - she has arrived; has come; तत् (tad) - therefore; that; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; देवर्षे (devarṣe) - O divine sage; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - the husband; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनया (anayā) - by her; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; selected;]
(By business indeed by this very (one) sent just today and she has come. Therefore of her hear O divine sage the husband who by her (was) chosen.)
Indeed, she was sent on business by this very person just today and has come. Therefore, O divine sage, hear who is the husband chosen by her. (03-278-5)

सा ब्रूहि विस्तरेणेति पित्रा सञ्चोदिता शुभा। दैवतस्येव वचनं प्रतिगृह्येदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२७८-६॥
sā brūhi vistareṇeti pitrā sañcoditā śubhā। daivatasyeva vacanaṃ pratigṛhyedamabravīt ॥03-278-6॥
[सा (sā) - she; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; इति (iti) - thus; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (her) father; सञ्चोदिता (sañcoditā) - urged; शुभा (śubhā) - the auspicious (woman); दैवतस्य (daivatasya) - of a deity; इव (iva) - as if; वचनम् (vacanam) - the word; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she said;]
(She, having been urged by her father with "Say in detail," the auspicious (woman), having accepted (it) as if (it were) the word of a deity, said this.)
When urged by her father, 'Say it in detail,' the auspicious lady, as if accepting the words of a god, spoke as follows. (03-278-6)
आसीच्छाल्वेषु धर्मात्मा क्षत्रियः पृथिवीपतिः। द्युमत्सेन इति ख्यातः पश्चादन्धो बभूव ह ॥०३-२७८-७॥
āsīcchālveṣu dharmātmā kṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। dyumatsena iti khyātaḥ paścād andho babhūva ha॥03-278-7॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; शाल्वेषु (śālveṣu) - among the Śālvas; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; द्युमत्सेन (dyumatsena) - Dyumatsena; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - well-known; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; अन्धः (andhaḥ) - blind; बभूव (babhūva) - he became; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(There was among the Śālvas a righteous-souled Kṣatriya, lord of the earth, Dyumatsena thus well-known; afterwards indeed he became blind.)
Among the Śālvas there was a righteous Kṣatriya king, named Dyumatsena, who later became blind. (03-278-7)
विनष्टचक्षुषस्तस्य बालपुत्रस्य धीमतः। सामीप्येन हृतं राज्यं छिद्रेऽस्मिन्पूर्ववैरिणा ॥०३-२७८-८॥
vinaṣṭacakṣuṣastasya bālaputrasya dhīmataḥ। sāmīpyena hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ chidre'smin pūrvavairiṇā ॥03-278-8॥
[विनष्टचक्षुषः (vinaṣṭa-cakṣuṣaḥ) - whose vision is lost; तस्य (tasya) - of his; बालपुत्रस्य (bāla-putrasya) - of the young son; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; सामीप्येन (sāmīpyena) - by proximity; हृतं (hṛtam) - taken away; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; छिद्रेऽस्मिन् (chidre'smin) - in this gap; पूर्ववैरिणा (pūrvavairiṇā) - by the former enemy;]
(Of his wise young son whose vision is lost, by proximity, the kingdom was taken away in this gap by the former enemy.)
The kingdom of his wise young son, whose sight was lost, was taken away by the former enemy taking advantage of this opportunity. (03-278-8)
स बालवत्सया सार्धं भार्यया प्रस्थितो वनम्। महारण्यगतश्चापि तपस्तेपे महाव्रतः ॥०३-२७८-९॥
sa bālavatsayā sārdhaṃ bhāryayā prasthito vanam। mahāraṇyagataścāpi tapastepe mahāvrataḥ ॥03-278-9॥
[स (sa) - he; बालवत्सया (bālavatsayā) - with child-loving; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - with (his) wife; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; महारण्यगतः (mahāraṇyagataḥ) - having gone into a great forest; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तपः (tapas) - ascetic practice; तेपे (tepe) - he practiced; महाव्रतः (mahāvrataḥ) - one of great vows;]
(He, together with his child-loving wife, departed to the forest. Having gone into a great forest, one of great vows also practiced asceticism.)
He departed to the forest together with his devoted wife. Having entered the great wilderness, that man of great vows performed austere penance. (03-278-9)
तस्य पुत्रः पुरे जातः संवृद्धश्च तपोवने। सत्यवाननुरूपो मे भर्तेति मनसा वृतः ॥०३-२७८-१०॥
tasya putraḥ pure jātaḥ saṁvṛddhaś ca tapovane. satyavān anurūpo me bharteti manasā vṛtaḥ ॥03-278-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; पुरे (pure) - in the city; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; संवृद्धः (saṁvṛddhaḥ) - grown up; च (ca) - and; तपोवने (tapovane) - in the forest-hermitage; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; अनुरूपः (anurūpaḥ) - suitable; मे (me) - for me; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; इति (iti) - so; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen;]
(Of him, the son was born in the city, and grown up in the forest-hermitage; Satyavan, suitable for me as husband—so (he was) chosen by mind.)
His son was born in the city and raised in the forest hermitage; Satyavan, fit to be my husband, was chosen in my mind. (03-278-10)

अहो बत महत्पापं सावित्र्या नृपते कृतम्। अजानन्त्या यदनया गुणवान्सत्यवान्वृतः ॥०३-२७८-११॥
aho bata mahatpāpaṃ sāvitryā nṛpate kṛtam। ajānantyā yadanayā guṇavān satyavān vṛtaḥ ॥03-278-11॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; बत (bata) - indeed; महत्-पापं (mahat-pāpaṃ) - great sin; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitrī; नृपते (nṛpate) - O King; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; अजानन्त्या (ajānantyā) - by not knowing; यत् (yat) - that; अनया (anayā) - by her; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - virtuous; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - was chosen;]
(Alas indeed, great sin by Sāvitrī, O King, was done; by not knowing, that by her virtuous Satyavān was chosen.)
Alas, O King, a great sin was indeed committed by Sāvitrī; unknowingly, she chose the virtuous Satyavān. (03-278-11)
सत्यं वदत्यस्य पिता सत्यं माता प्रभाषते। ततोऽस्य ब्राह्मणाश्चक्रुर्नामैतत्सत्यवानिति ॥०३-२७८-१२॥
satyaṃ vadatyasya pitā satyaṃ mātā prabhāṣate. tato'sya brāhmaṇāścakrurnāmaitat satyavān iti ॥03-278-12॥
[सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; वदति (vadati) - speaks; अस्य (asya) - his; पिता (pitā) - father; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; माता (mātā) - mother; प्रभाषते (prabhāṣate) - speaks; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्य (asya) - his; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made (gave); नाम (nāma) - name; एतत् (etat) - this; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān (truthful); इति (iti) - thus;]
(Truth speaks his father, truth his mother speaks. Therefore, the brāhmaṇas made his name this: 'Satyavān.')
His father speaks the truth, his mother speaks the truth; therefore, the brāhmaṇas gave him this name: 'Satyavān.' (03-278-12)
बालस्याश्वाः प्रियाश्चास्य करोत्यश्वांश्च मृन्मयान्। चित्रेऽपि च लिखत्यश्वांश्चित्राश्व इति चोच्यते ॥०३-२७८-१३॥
bālasya aśvāḥ priyāś ca asya karoti aśvān ca mṛnmayan | citre api ca likhati aśvān citra-aśva iti ca ucyate ॥03-278-13॥
[बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; अश्वाः (aśvāḥ) - horses; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; करोति (karoti) - makes; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; च (ca) - and; मृन्मयान् (mṛnmayan) - made of clay; चित्रे (citre) - in a drawing; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; लिखति (likhati) - draws; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; चित्राश्व (citra-aśva) - picture horse; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Of the boy, horses are dear and to him makes horses of clay; in a drawing also and draws horses; 'picture horse' thus and is called. (03-278-13))
Horses are dear to the boy; he makes horses of clay, and also draws horses in pictures, so he is called 'picture horse.' (03-278-13)

अपीदानीं स तेजस्वी बुद्धिमान्वा नृपात्मजः। क्षमावानपि वा शूरः सत्यवान्पितृनन्दनः ॥०३-२७८-१४॥
apīdānīṃ sa tejasvī buddhimānvā nṛpātmajaḥ। kṣamāvānapi vā śūraḥ satyavānpitṛnandanaḥ॥03-278-14॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; at this time; सः (saḥ) - he; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - possessing brilliance; powerful; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - intelligent; वा (vā) - or; नृपात्मजः (nṛpātmajaḥ) - prince; son of a king; क्षमावान् (kṣamāvān) - forbearing; patient; अपि (api) - indeed; also; वा (vā) - or; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; valiant; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - truthful; पितृनन्दनः (pitṛnandanaḥ) - delight of his father;]
(Indeed now he, powerful, or intelligent, the prince; forbearing also or heroic, truthful, the delight of his father.)
Indeed, is he now—powerful or intelligent, the prince; patient also or heroic, truthful, the delight of his father? (03-278-14)

विवस्वानिव तेजस्वी बृहस्पतिसमो मतौ। महेन्द्र इव शूरश्च वसुधेव क्षमान्वितः ॥०३-२७८-१५॥
vivasvān iva tejasvī bṛhaspati-samaḥ matau। mahendra iva śūraś ca vasudhā iva kṣamānvitaḥ॥03-278-15॥
[विवस्वान् (vivasvān) - the Sun; इव (iva) - like; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati) - Bṛhaspati; समः (samaḥ) - equal; मतौ (matau) - in wisdom; महेन्द्र (mahendra) - Indra; इव (iva) - like; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; च (ca) - and; वसुधा (vasudhā) - the Earth; इव (iva) - like; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed with;]
(Radiant like the Sun, equal to Bṛhaspati in wisdom, valiant like Indra, and endowed with forbearance like the Earth.)

अपि राजात्मजो दाता ब्रह्मण्यो वापि सत्यवान्। रूपवानप्युदारो वाप्यथ वा प्रियदर्शनः ॥०३-२७८-१६॥
api rājatmajo dātā brahmaṇyo vāpi satyavān। rūpavānapyudāro vāpyatha vā priyadarśanaḥ॥03-278-16॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; राजात्मजः (rājatmajaḥ) - king's son; दाता (dātā) - giver; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to Brahman; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - indeed; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - truthful; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - handsome; अपि (api) - indeed; उदारः (udāraḥ) - noble; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - indeed; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; प्रियदर्शनः (priyadarśanaḥ) - pleasant to behold;]
(Indeed, the king's son (is) a giver, devoted to Brahman or truthful; or handsome indeed, or noble indeed, or pleasant to behold indeed.)
Is he, the king's son, truly a giver, devoted to Brahman or truthful? Or is he handsome, noble, or pleasant to behold? (03-278-16)

साङ्कृते रन्तिदेवस्य स शक्त्या दानतः समः। ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च शिबिरौशीनरो यथा ॥०३-२७८-१७॥
sāṅkṛte rantidevasya sa śaktyā dānataḥ samaḥ। brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca śibirauśīnaro yathā॥03-278-17॥
[साङ्कृते (sāṅkṛte) - in the quality of restraint; रन्तिदेवस्य (rantidevasya) - of Rantideva; सः (saḥ) - he; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - by power; दानतः (dānataḥ) - in giving; समः (samaḥ) - equal; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to Brahman; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; च (ca) - and; शिबि-रौशीनरः (śibi-rauśīnaraḥ) - Śibi, descendant of Uśīnara; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(In restraint, of Rantideva, he, by power, in giving, equal; devoted to Brahman, speaker of truth, and Śibi, descendant of Uśīnara, as.)
He (i.e., the person referred to) was, in the quality of restraint, equal to Rantideva in giving by his own power; he was devoted to Brahman and a speaker of truth like Śibi, the descendant of Uśīnara. (03-278-17)
ययातिरिव चोदारः सोमवत्प्रियदर्शनः। रूपेणान्यतमोऽश्विभ्यां द्युमत्सेनसुतो बली ॥०३-२७८-१८॥
yayātiriva codāraḥ somavatpriyadarśanaḥ। rūpeṇānyatamo'śvibhyāṃ dyumatsenāsuto balī॥03-278-18॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; (a legendary king;) इव (iva) - like; as; च (ca) - and; उदारः (udāraḥ) - noble; generous; सोमवत् (somavat) - like Soma (the Moon); प्रियदर्शनः (priyadarśanaḥ) - pleasant in appearance; charming; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; by appearance; अन्यतमः (anyatamaḥ) - another; one among others; exceptional; अश्विभ्याम् (aśvibhyām) - to the Aśvins (the twin gods); द्युमत्सेनसुतः (dyumatsenāsutaḥ) - son of Dyumatsena; बली (balī) - strong; powerful;]
(Yayāti-like and noble, like Soma pleasant in appearance, by form another to the Aśvins, Dyumatsena's son strong.)
He was noble like Yayāti, charming as Soma, in appearance resembling one of the Aśvins, and the powerful son of Dyumatsena. (03-278-18)
स दान्तः स मृदुः शूरः स सत्यः स जितेन्द्रियः। स मैत्रः सोऽनसूयश्च स ह्रीमान्धृतिमांश्च सः ॥०३-२७८-१९॥
sa dāntaḥ sa mṛduḥ śūraḥ sa satyaḥ sa jitendriyaḥ। sa maitraḥ so'nasūyaś ca sa hrīmān dhṛtimāṁś ca saḥ ॥03-278-19॥
[स (sa) - he; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-controlled; स (sa) - he; मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - gentle; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; स (sa) - he; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truthful; स (sa) - he; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - having conquered the senses; स (sa) - he; मैत्रः (maitraḥ) - friendly; सः (saḥ) - he; अनसूयः (anasūyaḥ) - non-envious; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; ह्रीमान् (hrīmān) - modest; धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - steadfast; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(He self-controlled, he gentle, valiant, he truthful, he conqueror of the senses. He friendly, he non-envious and, he modest, steadfast and, he.)
He is self-controlled, gentle, valiant, truthful, one who has conquered his senses. He is friendly, free from envy, modest, and steadfast. (03-278-19)
नित्यशश्चार्जवं तस्मिन्स्थितिस्तस्यैव च ध्रुवा। सङ्क्षेपतस्तपोवृद्धैः शीलवृद्धैश्च कथ्यते ॥०३-२७८-२०॥
nityaśaścārjavaṃ tasmin sthitis tasyaiva ca dhruvā। saṅkṣepatas tapovṛddhaiḥ śīlavṛddhaiś ca kathyate॥03-278-20॥
[नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; always; च (ca) - and; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; sincerity; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; therein; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - abiding; establishment; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of that only; his only; च (ca) - and; ध्रुवा (dhruvā) - firm; fixed; सङ्क्षेपतः (saṅkṣepataḥ) - in brief; concisely; तपः-वृद्धैः (tapo-vṛddhaiḥ) - by those grown in asceticism; by ascetic elders; शील-वृद्धैः (śīla-vṛddhaiḥ) - by those advanced in character; by virtuous elders; च (ca) - and; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said; is described;]
(Constantly and straightforwardness in that — the abiding is fixed of that alone; in brief, by those grown in asceticism and virtuous elders, it is said.)
Constant straightforwardness in that is his firm state; in brief, this is described by ascetic elders and those advanced in virtue. (03-278-20)
अश्वपतिरुवाच॥

गुणैरुपेतं सर्वैस्तं भगवन्प्रब्रवीषि मे। दोषानप्यस्य मे ब्रूहि यदि सन्तीह केचन ॥०३-२७८-२१॥
guṇair upetaṃ sarvaiḥ taṃ bhagavan prabravīṣi me। doṣān api asya me brūhi yadi santi iha kecana॥03-278-21॥
[गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues; उपेतं (upetaṃ) - endowed; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; तं (taṃ) - him; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O blessed one; प्रब्रवीषि (prabravīṣi) - you are telling; मे (me) - to me; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; अपि (api) - even; अस्य (asya) - of him; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; यदि (yadi) - if; सन्ति (santi) - are; इह (iha) - here; केचन (kecana) - any;]
(With all virtues endowed him, O blessed one, you are telling to me. Faults even of him to me tell, if there are here any. (03-278-21))
O blessed one, you are describing him to me as endowed with all virtues. Tell me also of his faults, if there are any here. (03-278-21)
नारद उवाच॥

एको दोषोऽस्य नान्योऽस्ति सोऽद्य प्रभृति सत्यवान्। संवत्सरेण क्षीणायुर्देहन्यासं करिष्यति ॥०३-२७८-२२॥
eko doṣo'sya nānyo'sti so'dya prabhṛti satyavān। saṃvatsareṇa kṣīṇāyurdehanyāsaṃ kariṣyati ॥03-278-22॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; अस्य (asya) - of him; न अन्यः (na anyaḥ) - not another; अस्ति (asti) - is; सः (saḥ) - he; अद्य प्रभृति (adya prabhṛti) - from today; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; संवत्सरेण (saṃvatsareṇa) - in one year; क्षीण आयुः (kṣīṇa āyuḥ) - with diminished lifespan; देह-न्यासम् (deha-nyāsam) - abandonment of body; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - he will do;]
(One fault of him—not another—is. He, from today, Satyavan, in a year, with diminished lifespan, abandonment of the body will do.)
He has but one fault, no other: Satyavan from today, within a year, having a shortened span of life, will relinquish his body. (03-278-22)
राजोवाच॥

The king said.
एहि सावित्रि गच्छ त्वमन्यं वरय शोभने। तस्य दोषो महानेको गुणानाक्रम्य तिष्ठति ॥०३-२७८-२३॥
ehi sāvitrī gaccha tvam anyaṃ varaya śobhane। tasya doṣo mahāneko guṇān ākrāmya tiṣṭhati ॥03-278-23॥

(Come, Sāvitrī, go, you, another, choose, O beautiful one. His fault, great, one, overcoming (all) virtues, remains.)

यथा मे भगवानाह नारदो देवसत्कृतः। संवत्सरेण सोऽल्पायुर्देहन्यासं करिष्यति ॥०३-२७८-२४॥
yathā me bhagavān āha nārado devasatkṛtaḥ। saṁvatsareṇa so'lpāyur dehanyāsaṃ kariṣyati ॥03-278-24॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the way; as exactly; मे (me) - to me; for me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; the revered; the illustrious one; आह (āha) - said; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; (proper noun); देवसत्कृतः (devasatkṛtaḥ) - honored by the gods; संवत्सरेण (saṁvatsareṇa) - in a year; within a year; सः (saḥ) - he; अल्पायुः (alpāyuḥ) - short-lived; having little lifespan; देहन्यासम् (dehanyāsam) - abandonment of the body; laying down the body; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; will perform;]
(As to me the venerable one said, Nārada, honored by the gods: Within a year, he, short-lived, will perform laying down of the body.)
As the venerable Nārada, honored by the gods, told me: he, being short-lived, will give up his body within a year. (03-278-24)
सावित्र्युवाच॥

Savitri said.
सकृदंशो निपतति सकृत्कन्या प्रदीयते। सकृदाह ददानीति त्रीण्येतानि सकृत्सकृत् ॥०३-२७८-२५॥
sakṛdaṁśo nipatati sakṛtkanyā pradīyate। sakṛdāha dadānīti trīṇyetāni sakṛtsakṛt ॥03-278-25॥
[सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; only once; अंशः (aṁśaḥ) - portion; share; निपतति (nipatati) - falls; is assigned; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; only once; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; प्रदीयते (pradīyate) - is given; is bestowed; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; only once; आह (āha) - says; ददानीति (dadānīti) - (one says) 'I give'; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; एतानि (etāni) - these; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once;]
(Once a share falls; once a daughter is given; once (it is) said, 'I give'; these three (are) only once only once.)
A share is allotted only once; a daughter is given only once; and the words 'I give' are said only once—these three are to be done only once. (03-278-25)
दीर्घायुरथ वाल्पायुः सगुणो निर्गुणोऽपि वा। सकृद्वृतो मया भर्ता न द्वितीयं वृणोम्यहम् ॥०३-२७८-२६॥
dīrghāyuratha vālpāyuḥ saguṇo nirguṇo’pi vā। sakṛdvṛto mayā bhartā na dvitīyaṃ vṛṇomyaham ॥03-278-26॥
[दीर्घायुः (dīrghāyuḥ) - long-lived; अथ (atha) - or; वाल्पायुः (vālpāyuḥ) - short-lived; सगुणः (saguṇaḥ) - possessed of virtues; निर्गुणः (nirguṇaḥ) - devoid of virtues; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; मया (mayā) - by me; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; न (na) - not; द्वितीयं (dvitīyaṃ) - a second (one); वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - I choose; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Long-lived or short-lived, possessed of virtues or even devoid of virtues; the husband once chosen by me, I do not choose a second.)
Whether he is long-lived or short-lived, virtuous or even without virtues, the husband once chosen by me, I do not choose another (second one). (03-278-26)
मनसा निश्चयं कृत्वा ततो वाचाभिधीयते। क्रियते कर्मणा पश्चात्प्रमाणं मे मनस्ततः ॥०३-२७८-२७॥
manasā niścayaṃ kṛtvā tato vācābhidhīyate। kriyate karmaṇā paścāt pramāṇaṃ me manas tataḥ॥03-278-27॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by mind; by thought; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - resolve; determination; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; अभिधीयते (abhidhīyate) - is spoken; is uttered; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; is performed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - evidence; authority; मे (me) - my; for me; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ततः (tataḥ) - from that;]
(By mind, having made determination, then by speech it is uttered; it is performed by action afterwards; the evidence for me is mind from that.)
First, determination is made in the mind, then it is expressed through speech, afterward the action is performed; thus, for me, the mind is the source of proof. (03-278-27)
नारद उवाच॥

स्थिरा बुद्धिर्नरश्रेष्ठ सावित्र्या दुहितुस्तव। नैषा चालयितुं शक्या धर्मादस्मात्कथञ्चन ॥०३-२७८-२८॥
sthirā buddhir nara-śreṣṭha sāvitryā duhitus tava। naiṣā cālayituṃ śakyā dharmād asmāt kathañcana॥03-278-28॥
[स्थिरा (sthirā) - firm; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - resolve; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitrī; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); चालयितुं (cālayitum) - to cause to waver; शक्या (śakyā) - is possible; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Firm is the resolve, O best of men, of Sāvitrī, your daughter; this (mind) cannot be caused to waver from this righteousness in any way.)
O best of men, the resolve of Sāvitrī, your daughter, is firm—she cannot be swayed from this righteousness in any way. (03-278-28)
नान्यस्मिन्पुरुषे सन्ति ये सत्यवति वै गुणाः। प्रदानमेव तस्मान्मे रोचते दुहितुस्तव ॥०३-२७८-२९॥
nānyasmin puruṣe santi ye satyavatī vai guṇāḥ। pradānam eva tasmān me rocate duhitus tava ॥03-278-29॥
[न (na) - not; अन्यस्मिन् (anyasmin) - in another; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - man; सन्ति (santi) - are; ये (ye) - which; सत्यवति (satyavatī) - Satyavati; वै (vai) - indeed; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; प्रदानम् (pradānam) - giving (in marriage); एव (eva) - only; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मे (me) - to me; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; तव (tava) - your;]
(Not in another man are which Satyavati indeed qualities; giving only therefore to me pleases of the daughter your.)
The qualities that are in Satyavati are indeed not present in another man; therefore, it is only the giving in marriage of your daughter that pleases me. (03-278-29)
राजोवाच॥

The king said.
अविचार्यमेतदुक्तं हि तथ्यं भगवता वचः। करिष्याम्येतदेवं च गुरुर्हि भगवान्मम ॥०३-२७८-३०॥
avichāryam etad uktaṃ hi tathyaṃ bhagavatā vacaḥ। kariṣyāmy etad evaṃ ca gurur hi bhagavān mama ॥03-278-30॥
[अविचार्यम् (avichāryam) - not deliberated; एतत् (etat) - this; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; हि (hi) - indeed; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - true; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the revered; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; च (ca) - and; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the exalted; मम (mama) - my;]
(Not deliberated, this spoken indeed true by the revered word. I shall do this thus and the teacher indeed the exalted my.)
This word spoken by the revered one is indeed true and not deliberated. I shall do just this, for my teacher is indeed exalted. (03-278-30)

अविघ्नमस्तु सावित्र्याः प्रदाने दुहितुस्तव। साधयिष्यामहे तावत्सर्वेषां भद्रमस्तु वः ॥०३-२७८-३१॥
avighnam astu sāvitryāḥ pradāne duhitus tava। sādhayiṣyāmahe tāvat sarveṣāṃ bhadram astu vaḥ॥03-278-31॥
[अविघ्नम् (avighnam) - without obstacle; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सावित्र्याः (sāvitryāḥ) - of Sāvitrī; प्रदाने (pradāne) - in the giving; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; तव (tava) - of you; साधयिष्यामहे (sādhayiṣyāmahe) - we shall accomplish; तावत् (tāvat) - so far; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; भद्रम् (bhadram) - well-being; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(Let there be no obstacle in the giving of Sāvitrī, your daughter. We shall accomplish so far. Let there be well-being for all of you.)
Let there be no hindrance in the marriage of Sāvitrī, your daughter. We shall proceed now. May well-being be for all of you. (03-278-31)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca॥
[मार्कण्डेय (mārkaṇḍeya) - Markandeya; (a proper noun, name of a sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Markandeya said;)
Markandeya said.
एवमुक्त्वा खमुत्पत्य नारदस्त्रिदिवं गतः। राजापि दुहितुः सर्वं वैवाहिकमकारयत् ॥०३-२७८-३२॥
evam-uktvā kham utpatya nāradaḥ tridivaṃ gataḥ। rājā api duhituḥ sarvaṃ vaivāhikam akarayat ॥03-278-32॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; खम् (kham) - the sky; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having ascended; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nāradā; त्रिदिवं (tridivam) - heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - went; राजा (rājā) - the king; अपि (api) - also; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; वैवाहिकम् (vaivāhikam) - marriage rites; अकारयत् (akarayat) - caused to be done;]
(Thus having spoken, having ascended the sky, Nārada went to heaven. The king also caused all marriage rites of the daughter to be performed.)
After saying this, Nārada rose to the sky and went to heaven. The king also carried out all the marriage ceremonies for his daughter. (03-278-32)
