atha kanyāpradāne sa tamevāarthaṃ vicintayan। samāninye ca tatsarvaṃ bhāṇḍaṃ vaivāhikaṃ nṛpaḥ॥03-279-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कन्याप्रदाने (kanyāpradāne) - at the giving of the maiden; स (sa) - he; तम्-एव-अर्थं (tam-ev-arthaṃ) - that very purpose; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - considering; समानिन्ये (samāninye) - caused to be brought together; च (ca) - and; तत्-सर्वं (tat-sarvaṃ) - all that; भाण्डं (bhāṇḍam) - articles; वैवाहिकं (vaivāhikaṃ) - relating to marriage; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(Then at the giving of the maiden, he, considering that very purpose, and caused all those marriage-related articles to be brought together, the king.)
Then, during the giving away of the maiden, the king, reflecting on that very purpose, had all the marriage articles assembled. (03-279-1)
ततो वृद्धान्द्विजान्सर्वानृत्विजः सपुरोहितान्। समाहूय तिथौ पुण्ये प्रययौ सह कन्यया ॥०३-२७९-२॥
tato vṛddhān dvijān sarvān ṛtvijaḥ sa-purohitān। samāhūya tithau puṇye prayayau saha kanyakayā॥03-279-2॥

(Then elders, twice-born, all ritual priests along with family priests after assembling on the auspicious lunar day, he departed together with the maiden.)

मेध्यारण्यं स गत्वा च द्युमत्सेनाश्रमं नृपः। पद्भ्यामेव द्विजैः सार्धं राजर्षिं तमुपागमत् ॥०३-२७९-३॥
medhyāraṇyaṃ sa gatvā ca dyumatsenāśramaṃ nṛpaḥ। padbhyāmeva dvijaiḥ sārdhaṃ rājarṣiṃ tamupāgamat॥03-279-3॥

(Having gone to the holy forest and the hermitage of Dyumatsena, the king—on foot indeed, together with the twice-born—approached that royal sage.)
The king went to the holy forest and Dyumatsena's hermitage, and, going there on foot with the Brahmins, approached the royal sage. (03-279-3)
तत्रापश्यन्महाभागं शालवृक्षमुपाश्रितम्। कौश्यां बृस्यां समासीनं चक्षुर्हीनं नृपं तदा ॥०३-२७९-४॥
tatrāpaśyanmahābhāgaṃ śālavṛkṣamupāśritam। kauśyāṃ bṛsyāṃ samāsīnaṃ cakṣurhīnaṃ nṛpaṃ tadā ॥03-279-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - very fortunate; शालवृक्षम् (śālavṛkṣam) - śāla tree; उपाश्रितम् (upāśritam) - sheltered under; कौश्याम् (kauśyām) - on a silken; बृस्याम् (bṛsyām) - couch; समासीनम् (samāsīnam) - seated; चक्षुः-हीनम् (cakṣuḥ-hīnam) - deprived of sight; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(There saw very fortunate (one), śāla tree sheltered under, on a silken couch, seated, deprived of sight, king, then.)
Then he saw there the very fortunate king, deprived of sight, seated on a silken couch, sheltered under a śāla tree. (03-279-4)
स राजा तस्य राजर्षेः कृत्वा पूजां यथार्हतः। वाचा सुनियतो भूत्वा चकारात्मनिवेदनम् ॥०३-२७९-५॥
sa rājā tasya rājarṣeḥ kṛtvā pūjāṃ yathārhataḥ। vācā suniyato bhūtvā cakārātmanivedanam ॥03-279-5॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; तस्य (tasya) - to him; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; यथार्हतः (yathārhataḥ) - as is appropriate; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; सुनियतः (suniyataḥ) - well-restrained; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - after becoming; चकार (cakāra) - he did; आत्मनिवेदनम् (ātmanivedanam) - self-surrender;]
(He king to him, the royal sage, having performed worship as is appropriate, by speech, well-restrained after becoming, he did self-surrender.)
The king, having duly worshiped that royal sage as was proper, becoming well-restrained in speech, made self-surrender. (03-279-5)
तस्यार्घ्यमासनं चैव गां चावेद्य स धर्मवित्। किमागमनमित्येवं राजा राजानमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२७९-६॥
tasyārghyam āsanaṃ caiva gāṃ ca avedya sa dharmavit। kim āgamanam iti evaṃ rājā rājānam abravīt॥03-279-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - to him; of him; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering of hospitality; water for washing; आसनं (āsanam) - seat; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गाम् (gām) - cow; च (ca) - and; अवेद्य (avedya) - having offered; स (sa) - he; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; किम् (kim) - what; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - arrival; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; राजा (rājā) - king; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(To him, offering the arghya, and indeed a seat and a cow, having offered, he, knower of dharma, 'what is (the reason of) the arrival?'—thus, in this way, the king said to the king. (03-279-6))
Having offered arghya (water of hospitality), a seat, and a cow to him, the knower of dharma, the king said to the king, 'What is the purpose of your coming?' (03-279-6)
तस्य सर्वमभिप्रायमितिकर्तव्यतां च ताम्। सत्यवन्तं समुद्दिश्य सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-२७९-७॥
tasya sarvam-abhiprāyam-iti-kartavyatāṁ ca tām। satyavantaṁ samuddiśya sarvam-eva nyavedayat ॥03-279-7॥

(Of him all intention, thus dutifulness and that; to Satyavan having addressed, all indeed she narrated.)
She narrated to Satyavan all his intentions and all that was to be done, addressing him, indeed. (03-279-7)
अश्वपतिरुवाच॥

(Horse-lord said.)
The horse-lord said.
सावित्री नाम राजर्षे कन्येयं मम शोभना। तां स्वधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ स्नुषार्थे त्वं गृहाण मे ॥०३-२७९-८॥
sāvitrī nāma rājarṣe kanyeyam mama śobhanā। tāṃ svadharmeṇa dharmajña snuṣārthe tvaṃ gṛhāṇa me॥03-279-8॥
[सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Sāvitrī (proper noun); नाम (nāma) - by name; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; इयम् (iyam) - this; मम (mama) - my; शोभना (śobhanā) - beautiful; ताम् (tām) - her; स्वधर्मेण (svadharmeṇa) - with (her) own dharma (nature); धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - O knower of dharma (O righteous one); स्नुषार्थे (snuṣārthe) - for (the purpose of) a daughter-in-law; त्वम् (tvam) - you; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; मे (me) - from me;]
(Sāvitrī by name, O royal sage, daughter this my beautiful. Her with her own dharma, O knower of dharma, for daughter-in-law you accept from me.)
O royal sage, this beautiful daughter of mine is named Sāvitrī. O knower of dharma, accept her from me as your daughter-in-law in accordance with her own dharma. (03-279-8)
द्युमत्सेन उवाच॥

च्युताः स्म राज्याद्वनवासमाश्रिता; श्चराम धर्मं नियतास्तपस्विनः। कथं त्वनर्हा वनवासमाश्रमे; सहिष्यते क्लेशमिमं सुता तव ॥०३-२७९-९॥
cyutāḥ sma rājyād vanavāsam āśritāḥ; carāma dharmaṃ niyatāḥ tapasvinaḥ. kathaṃ tv anarhā vanavāsa āśrame; sahiṣyate kleśam imaṃ sutā tava ॥03-279-9॥
[च्युताः (cyutāḥ) - fallen; (from) स्म (sma) - indeed; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - having taken refuge in; च (ca) - and; अराम (carāma) - we practice; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; नियताः (niyatāḥ) - self-controlled; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - austerity-practicing ones; कथम् (katham) - how; त्व् (tv) - your; अनर्हा (anarhā) - unworthy; वनवासअश्रमे (vanavāsa āśrame) - in the forest dwelling hermitage; सहिष्यते (sahiṣyate) - will endure; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - affliction; इमम् (imaṃ) - this; सुता (sutā) - daughter; तव (tava) - your;]
(Indeed, fallen from the kingdom, having taken refuge in forest-dwelling, and we, self-controlled ascetics, practice righteousness. How will your unworthy daughter endure this affliction in the forest-dwelling hermitage?)
Having been deprived of the kingdom, we ascetics, practicing self-control, have taken refuge in forest life and follow righteousness. How will your daughter, who is unaccustomed to such hardship, endure this suffering in the forest hermitage? (03-279-9)
अश्वपतिरुवाच॥

The lord of horses said.
सुखं च दुःखं च भवाभवात्मकं; यदा विजानाति सुताहमेव च। न मद्विधे युज्यति वाक्यमीदृशं; विनिश्चयेनाभिगतोऽस्मि ते नृप ॥०३-२७९-१०॥
sukhaṃ ca duḥkhaṃ ca bhavābhavātmakaṃ; yadā vijānāti sutāham eva ca. na madvidhe yujyati vākyam īdṛśaṃ; viniścayenābhigato'smi te nṛpa ॥03-279-10॥
[सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; च (ca) - and; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - suffering; च (ca) - and; भव-अभाव-आत्मकं (bhava-abhāva-ātmakaṃ) - of the nature of being and non-being; यदा (yadā) - when; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; सुत-अहम्-एव (suta-aham-eva) - I am (indeed) the son; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; मद्विधे (madvidhe) - for one like me; युज्यति (yujyati) - is appropriate; वाक्यम्-ईदृशं (vākyam-īdṛśaṃ) - a statement such as this; विनिश्चयेन (viniścayena) - with certainty; अभिगतः-अस्मि (abhigataḥ-asmi) - I have come (approached); ते (te) - to you; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Happiness and suffering and (that which is) of the nature of being and non-being, when (someone) knows, and (that) I am indeed the son. For one like me, a statement such as this is not appropriate; I have come to you with certainty, O king (03-279-10))
Happiness and suffering, and the very nature of existence and non-existence—when one knows these, as well as that I am truly the son—such a statement is not appropriate for someone like me. O king, I have approached you with full certainty. (03-279-10)
आशां नार्हसि मे हन्तुं सौहृदाद्प्रणयेन च। अभितश्चागतं प्रेम्णा प्रत्याख्यातुं न मार्हसि ॥०३-२७९-११॥
āśāṁ nārhasi me hantuṁ sauhṛdād praṇayena ca। abhitaś cāgataṁ premṇā pratyākhyātuṁ na mārhasi ॥03-279-11॥
[आशां (āśām) - hope (of mine); नार्हसि (nārhasi) - you ought not; मे (me) - my; of me; हन्तुं (hantuṁ) - to destroy; सौहृदात् (sauhṛdāt) - out of friendship; प्रणयेन (praṇayena) - out of affection; च (ca) - and; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - from all sides; च (ca) - and; आगतम् (āgatam) - come (arrived); प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with love; प्रत्याख्यातुं (pratyākhyātuṁ) - to reject; न (na) - not; मार्हसि (mārhasi) - you ought;]
(Hope (of mine) you ought not to destroy out of friendship and affection; and from all directions come with love, to reject, you ought not.)
You ought not to destroy my hope out of friendship and affection; and you should not reject one who has come to you with love from every side. (03-279-11)
अनुरूपो हि संयोगे त्वं ममाहं तवापि च। स्नुषां प्रतीच्छ मे कन्यां भार्यां सत्यवतः सुताम् ॥०३-२७९-१२॥
anurūpo hi saṃyoge tvaṃ mamāhaṃ tavāpi ca। snuṣāṃ pratīccha me kanyāṃ bhāryāṃ satyavataḥ sutām ॥03-279-12॥
[अनुरूपः (anurūpaḥ) - suitable; हि (hi) - indeed; संयोगे (saṃyoge) - in union; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मम (mama) - of me; अहम् (aham) - I; तवापि (tavāpi) - of yours also; च (ca) - and; स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; प्रतीच्छ (pratīccha) - accept; मे (me) - my; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; सत्यवतः (satyavataḥ) - of Satyavat; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter;]
(Suitable indeed in union you (are); of me, I (am), of yours also, and. Daughter-in-law accept, my maiden (as) wife, of Satyavat the daughter.)
You are indeed suitable for union; I am also of a like mind to you. Therefore, accept my daughter as your daughter-in-law, as the wife of Satyavat's son. (03-279-12)
द्युमत्सेन उवाच॥

पूर्वमेवाभिलषितः सम्बन्धो मे त्वया सह। भ्रष्टराज्यस्त्वहमिति तत एतद्विचारितम् ॥०३-२७९-१३॥
pūrvamevābhilaṣitaḥ sambandho me tvayā saha। bhraṣṭarājyastvahamiti tata etadvicāritam ॥03-279-13॥
[पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; before; एव (eva) - indeed; truly; अभिलषितः (abhilaṣitaḥ) - wished for; desired; सम्बन्धः (sambandhaḥ) - relationship; connection; मे (me) - to me; my; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सह (saha) - with; भ्रष्टराज्यः (bhraṣṭarājyaḥ) - one who has lost the kingdom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - therefore; then; एतत् (etat) - this; विचारितम् (vicāritam) - considered; pondered;]
(Previously indeed wished for relationship my with you. 'One who has lost the kingdom: you, I'—thus, therefore, this was considered.)
The relationship with you was indeed previously desired by me. Considering 'you are one who has lost the kingdom; I am (the same)', therefore, this has been reflected upon. (03-279-13)
अभिप्रायस्त्वयं यो मे पूर्वमेवाभिकाङ्क्षितः। स निर्वर्ततु मेऽद्यैव काङ्क्षितो ह्यसि मेऽतिथिः ॥०३-२७९-१४॥
abhiprāyas tv ayaṁ yo me pūrvam eva abhikāṅkṣitaḥ। sa nirvartatu me ’dyaiva kāṅkṣito hy asi me ’tithiḥ॥03-279-14॥
[अभिप्रायः (abhiprāyaḥ) - purpose; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अयम् (ayam) - this; यः (yaḥ) - who; मे (me) - to me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिकाङ्क्षितः (abhikāṅkṣitaḥ) - earnestly desired; सः (saḥ) - that; निर्वर्ततु (nirvartatu) - may be accomplished; मे (me) - for me; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - only; काङ्क्षितः (kāṅkṣitaḥ) - desired; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; मे (me) - my; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest;]
(This purpose—who indeed before was earnestly desired by me—that may be accomplished for me today only; indeed, you are my desired guest.)
This very purpose, which I had earnestly wished for before, may it be fulfilled for me today itself; for you are truly my desired guest. (03-279-14)

ततः सर्वान्समानीय द्विजानाश्रमवासिनः। यथाविधि समुद्वाहं कारयामासतुर्नृपौ ॥०३-२७९-१५॥
tataḥ sarvān samānīya dvijān āśramavāsinaḥ। yathāvidhi samudvāhaṃ kārayāmāsatur nṛpau॥03-279-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; समानीय (samānīya) - having called; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born (Brahmins); आश्रमवासिनः (āśramavāsinaḥ) - hermits (ashrama-dwellers); यथा-विधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule; समुद्वाहम् (samudvāham) - marriage; कारयामासतुः (kārayāmāsatuḥ) - the two kings caused to be performed; नृपौ (nṛpau) - the two kings;]
(Then, all having been called, the twice-born and ashrama-dwelling hermits, according to rule, the two kings caused the marriage to be performed.)
Then, having called all the Brahmins and hermits dwelling in the ashrama, the two kings arranged for the marriage to be performed according to proper rites. (03-279-15)
दत्त्वा त्वश्वपतिः कन्यां यथार्हं च परिच्छदम्। ययौ स्वमेव भवनं युक्तः परमया मुदा ॥०३-२७९-१६॥
dattvā tvaśvapatiḥ kanyāṃ yathārhaṃ ca paricchadam। yayau svameva bhavanaṃ yuktaḥ paramayā mudā ॥03-279-16॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; त्व (tva) - indeed; अश्वपतिः (aśvapatiḥ) - Aśvapati (proper noun, name of a king); कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - daughter; यथार्हं (yathārhaṃ) - as appropriate; च (ca) - and; परिच्छदम् (paricchadam) - ornaments (gifts, paraphernalia, dowry); ययौ (yayau) - departed; स्वम् (svam) - his own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनं (bhavanaṃ) - house; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - united; परमया (paramayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy;]
(Having given, indeed, Aśvapati the daughter as appropriate and ornaments, departed to his own house, united with supreme joy.)
Aśvapati, having given away his daughter along with appropriate gifts and ornaments, went to his own house, filled with great joy. (03-279-16)
सत्यवानपि भार्यां तां लब्ध्वा सर्वगुणान्विताम्। मुमुदे सा च तं लब्ध्वा भर्तारं मनसेप्सितम् ॥०३-२७९-१७॥
satyavān api bhāryāṃ tāṃ labdhvā sarva-guṇānvitām। mumude sā ca taṃ labdhvā bhartāraṃ manas-epsitam॥03-279-17॥

(Satyavan also, wife her having obtained endowed with all virtues, rejoiced; she and him having obtained as husband desired by (her) mind.)
Satyavan also rejoiced upon obtaining her, his wife endowed with all virtues; and she too rejoiced, having gained as her husband the one whom she desired in her heart. (03-279-17)
गते पितरि सर्वाणि संन्यस्याभरणानि सा। जगृहे वल्कलान्येव वस्त्रं काषायमेव च ॥०३-२७९-१८॥
gate pitari sarvāṇi saṁnyasyābharaṇāni sā. jagṛhe valkalānyeva vastraṁ kāṣāyameva ca ॥03-279-18॥
[गते (gate) - having gone; (having) departed; पितरि (pitari) - (her) father; in or when the father; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; संन्यस्य (saṁnyasya) - having set aside; having abandoned; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - decorations; ornaments; सा (sā) - she; जगृहे (jagṛhe) - (she) accepted; took; वल्कलानि (valkalāni) - bark garments; एव (eva) - only; indeed; वस्त्रं (vastram) - cloth; garment; काषायम् (kāṣāyam) - ochre robe; brown garment; एव (eva) - only; indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Having gone (her) father, having abandoned all ornaments, she took only bark garments, only ochre robes and cloth.)
After her father departed, having set aside all ornaments, she accepted only bark garments, and garments of ochre color. (03-279-18)
परिचारैर्गुणैश्चैव प्रश्रयेण दमेन च। सर्वकामक्रियाभिश्च सर्वेषां तुष्टिमावहत् ॥०३-२७९-१९॥
paricārair guṇaiś caiva praśrayeṇa damena ca। sarva-kāma-kriyābhiś ca sarveṣāṃ tuṣṭim āvahat ॥03-279-19॥
[परिचारैः (paricāraiḥ) - with services; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रश्रयेण (praśrayeṇa) - with humility; दमेन (damena) - with self-restraint; च (ca) - and; सर्वकामक्रियाभिः (sarva-kāma-kriyābhiḥ) - with actions fulfilling all desires; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; तुष्टिम् (tuṣṭim) - satisfaction; आवहत् (āvahat) - he brought;]
(With services, with virtues, indeed, with humility and with self-restraint and with actions fulfilling all desires and the satisfaction of all he brought.)
By means of services, virtues, humility, self-restraint, and fulfilling all desires through actions, he brought satisfaction to everyone. (03-279-19)
श्वश्रूं शरीरसत्कारैः सर्वैराच्छादनादिभिः। श्वशुरं देवकार्यैश्च वाचः संयमनेन च ॥०३-२७९-२०॥
śvaśrūṃ śarīrasatkāraiḥ sarvairācchādanādibhiḥ। śvaśuraṃ devakāryaiśca vācaḥ saṃyamānena ca ॥03-279-20॥
[श्वश्रूं (śvaśrūm) - mother-in-law; (accusative singular); शरीरसत्कारैः (śarīrasatkāraiḥ) - with honors to the body; (instrumental plural); सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; (instrumental plural); आच्छादनादिभिः (ācchādanādibhiḥ) - by coverings and the like; (instrumental plural); श्वशुरं (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; (accusative singular); देवकार्यैः (devakāryaiḥ) - with services to the gods; (instrumental plural); च (ca) - and; वाचः (vācaḥ) - of speech; (genitive singular); संयमनेन (saṃyamanena) - by restraint; (instrumental singular); च (ca) - and;]
(The mother-in-law with all honors to the body, by coverings and the like; the father-in-law with services to the gods and by restraint of speech and also.)
Honor the mother-in-law with bodily respect through coverings and similar means; honor the father-in-law with acts for the gods and by restraint of speech. (03-279-20)
तथैव प्रियवादेन नैपुणेन शमेन च। रहश्चैवोपचारेण भर्तारं पर्यतोषयत् ॥०३-२७९-२१॥
tathaiva priyavādena naipuṇena śamena ca। rahaścaivopacāreṇa bhartāraṁ paryatoṣayat ॥03-279-21॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; प्रियवादेन (priyavādena) - with kind speech; नैपुणेन (naipuṇena) - with skill; शमेन (śamena) - with restraint; च (ca) - and; रहः (rahaḥ) - in private; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपचारेण (upacāreṇa) - with service; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - her husband; पर्यतोषयत् (paryatoṣayat) - she satisfied;]
(In the same manner, with kind speech, with skill, with restraint, and in private, indeed with service, her husband she satisfied.)
In the same way, she satisfied her husband with kind words, skill, restraint, and also by serving him in private. (03-279-21)
एवं तत्राश्रमे तेषां तदा निवसतां सताम्। कालस्तपस्यतां कश्चिदतिचक्राम भारत ॥०३-२७९-२२॥
evaṁ tatrāśrame teṣāṁ tadā nivasatāṁ satām। kālastapasyatāṁ kaścidaticakrāma bhārata॥03-279-22॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; तेषां (teṣāṁ) - of them; तदा (tadā) - then; निवसतां (nivasatām) - dwelling; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; तपस्यताम् (tapasyatām) - of those practicing austerity; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - passed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus, there in the hermitage, then, of them, dwelling, of the virtuous, time, of those practicing austerity, some, passed, O Bhārata.)
Thus, O Bhārata, as those virtuous ones were then dwelling in the hermitage, some time passed as they were engaged in austerities. (03-279-22)
सावित्र्यास्तु शयानायास्तिष्ठन्त्याश्च दिवानिशम्। नारदेन यदुक्तं तद्वाक्यं मनसि वर्तते ॥०३-२७९-२३॥
sāvitryās tu śayānāyās tiṣṭhantyāś ca divāniśam। nāradena yad uktaṃ tad vākyaṃ manasi vartate॥03-279-23॥
[सावित्र्याः (sāvitryāḥ) - of Sāvitrī; तु (tu) - but; शयानायाः (śayānāyāḥ) - of the reclining (one); तिष्ठन्त्याः (tiṣṭhantyāḥ) - and of the standing (one); च (ca) - and; दिवा-निशम् (divā-niśam) - day and night; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; यत् (yat) - which; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - was spoken; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - statement; मनसि (manasi) - in (her) mind; वर्तते (vartate) - remains;]
(But of Sāvitrī, whether reclining or standing, day and night, the statement which was spoken by Nārada, that statement remains in (her) mind.)
But for Sāvitrī, whether she is lying down or standing, day and night, the words spoken by Nārada remain in her mind. (03-279-23)
