किं तद्गुह्यं न चाख्यातं कर्णायेहोष्णरश्मिना। कीदृशे कुण्डले ते च कवचं चैव कीदृशम् ॥०३-२८७-१॥
kiṁ tadguhyaṁ na cākhyātaṁ karṇāyehoṣṇaraśminā. kīdṛśe kuṇḍale te ca kavacaṁ caiva kīdṛśam ॥03-287-1॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तत् (tat) - that; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; कर्णाय (karṇāya) - to Karṇa; इह (iha) - here; उष्णरश्मिना (uṣṇaraśminā) - by him of hot rays; कीदृशे (kīdṛśe) - of what kind; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; ते (te) - your; च (ca) - and; कवचम् (kavacam) - armor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कीदृशम् (kīdṛśam) - of what kind;]
(What is that secret not declared to Karṇa here by him of hot rays? Of what kind are your earrings and your armor indeed, of what kind?)
What is that secret which has not been told here to Karṇa by him of blazing rays? Of what kind are your earrings and what kind is your armor indeed? (03-287-1)
कुतश्च कवचं तस्य कुण्डले चैव सत्तम। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तन्मे ब्रूहि तपोधन ॥०३-२८७-२॥
kutaśca kavacaṃ tasya kuṇḍale caiva sattama। etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ tanme brūhi tapodhana ॥03-287-2॥

ayaṃ rājan bravīmy etad yat tad guhyaṃ vibhāvasoḥ। yādṛśe kuṇḍale caiva kavacaṃ caiva yādṛśam ॥03-287-3॥

(This, O king, I speak: this secret of Vibhavasu, what that is, of what kind are the earrings and also the armor, and also of what sort.)
O king, I declare to you this secret concerning Vibhavasu: what it is, and what sort of earrings and armor there are. (03-287-3)
कुन्तिभोजं पुरा राजन्ब्राह्मणः समुपस्थितः। तिग्मतेजा महाप्रांशुः श्मश्रुदण्डजटाधरः ॥०३-२८७-४॥
kuntibhojaṃ purā rājan brāhmaṇaḥ samupasthitaḥ। tigmatejā mahāprāṃśuḥ śmaśrudāṇḍajaṭādharaḥ॥03-287-4॥

O king, once before, a Brāhmaṇa, possessing bright energy, very tall, and bearing a beard, staff, and matted hair, approached Kuntibhoja. (3-287-4)
दर्शनीयोऽनवद्याङ्गस्तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव। मधुपिङ्गो मधुरवाक्तपःस्वाध्यायभूषणः ॥०३-२८७-५॥
darśanīyo'navadyāṅgastejasā prajvalanniva। madhupiṅgo madhuravāktapaḥsvādhyāyabhūṣaṇaḥ॥03-287-5॥
[दर्शनीयः (darśanīyaḥ) - worthy of being seen; desirable of sight; अनवद्याङ्गः (anavadyāṅgaḥ) - having faultless limbs; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; प्रज्वलन् (prajvalan) - shining; blazing; इव (iva) - like; मधुपिङ्गः (madhupiṅgaḥ) - having honey-colored (brownish-yellow) complexion or eyes; मधुरवाक् (madhuravāk) - with sweet speech; तपःस्वाध्यायभूषणः (tapaḥsvādhyāyabhūṣaṇaḥ) - adorned by austerity and study of the Vedas;]
(Worthy of being seen, having faultless limbs, with brilliance shining like; honey-colored, with sweet speech, adorned by austerity and study of the Vedas. (03-287-5))
He was worthy to behold, of faultless limbs, shining with brilliance as if ablaze, honey-complexioned, sweet-spoken, and adorned by austerity and the study of sacred texts. (03-287-5)
स राजानं कुन्तिभोजमब्रवीत्सुमहातपाः। भिक्षामिच्छाम्यहं भोक्तुं तव गेहे विमत्सर ॥०३-२८७-६॥
sa rājānaṃ kuntibhojam abravīt sumahātapāḥ। bhikṣām icchāmi ahaṃ bhoktuṃ tava gehe vimatsara ॥03-287-6॥
[स (sa) - he; राजानं (rājānam) - king (object); कुन्तिभोजम् (kuntibhojam) - Kuntibhoja (name); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - one of very great penance; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to eat; तव (tava) - your; गेहे (gehe) - in house; विमत्सर (vimatsara) - free from jealousy;]
(He said to King Kuntibhoja, the one of very great penance: "I desire alms, I wish to eat in your house, free from jealousy." (03-287-6))
He, the one of great penance, said to King Kuntibhoja: "I wish to receive alms and to eat in your house, free from envy." (03-287-6)
न मे व्यलीकं कर्तव्यं त्वया वा तव चानुगैः। एवं वत्स्यामि ते गेहे यदि ते रोचतेऽनघ॥०३-२८७-७॥
na me vyalīkaṃ kartavyaṃ tvayā vā tava cānugaiḥ। evaṃ vatsyāmi te gehe yadi te rocate'nagha॥03-287-7॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; व्यलीकं (vyalīkaṃ) - wrongdoing; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - should be done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वा (vā) - or; तव (tava) - by your; च (ca) - and; अनुगैः (anugaiḥ) - followers; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I will remain; ते (te) - in your; गेहे (gehe) - house; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; रोचते (rocate) - it is pleasing; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Not by me wrongdoing should be done, by you or by your followers. Thus I will remain in your house, if to you it is pleasing, O sinless one.)
No wrongdoing should be done by me, you, or your followers. Thus, O sinless one, I will stay in your house if it pleases you. (03-287-7)
यथाकामं च गच्छेयमागच्छेयं तथैव च। शय्यासने च मे राजन्नापराध्येत कश्चन ॥०३-२८७-८॥
yathākāmaṃ ca gaccheyam āgaccheyaṃ tathaiva ca। śayyāsane ca me rājan nāparādhyeta kaścana॥03-287-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; च (ca) - and; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - I might go; आगच्छेयम् (āgaccheyam) - I might come; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; शय्यासने (śayyāsane) - on (my) bed and seat; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अपराध्येत (aparādhyeta) - would offend; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone;]
(As (my) desire, I might go and might come just so; and, O king, on (my) bed and seat, no one at all would offend me.)
O king, I might go and return as I wished, and on my bed and seat, no one would ever offend me. (03-287-8)
तमब्रवीत्कुन्तिभोजः प्रीतियुक्तमिदं वचः। एवमस्तु परं चेति पुनश्चैनमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-२८७-९॥
tam abravīt kuntibhojaḥ prītiyuktam idaṃ vacaḥ। evam astu paraṃ ca iti punaś cainam athābravīt ॥03-287-9॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; कुन्तिभोजः (kuntibhojaḥ) - Kuntibhoja (proper noun, name); प्रीतियुक्तम् (prītiyuktam) - with affection; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; एवम् (evam) - so; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; परम् (param) - further; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(To him, Kuntibhoja, with affection, this speech spoke: 'So let it be, and furthermore thus,' again and to him then spoke.)
Kuntibhoja affectionately spoke these words to him: 'So be it, and furthermore thus,' and then again addressed him. (03-287-9)
मम कन्या महाब्रह्मन्पृथा नाम यशस्विनी। शीलवृत्तान्विता साध्वी नियता न च मानिनी ॥०३-२८७-१०॥
mama kanyā mahābrahman-pṛthā nāma yaśasvinī। śīla-vṛtta-anvitā sādhvī niyatā na ca māninī॥03-287-10॥
[मम (mama) - my; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; महाब्रह्मन् (mahābrahman) - O great Brahman; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; नाम (nāma) - by name; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious; शील (śīla) - character; वृत्त (vṛtta) - conduct; अन्विता (anvitā) - endowed; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous; नियत (niyatā) - self-restrained; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मानिनी (māninī) - proud;]
(My daughter, O great Brahman, named Pṛthā, illustrious, endowed with character and conduct, virtuous, self-restrained, and not proud.)
O great Brahman, my daughter named Pṛthā is illustrious, endowed with character and conduct, virtuous, self-restrained, and not proud. (03-287-10)
उपस्थास्यति सा त्वां वै पूजयानवमन्य च। तस्याश्च शीलवृत्तेन तुष्टिं समुपयास्यसि ॥०३-२८७-११॥
upasthāsyati sā tvāṃ vai pūjayānavamanya ca। tasyāś ca śīlavṛttena tuṣṭiṃ samupayāsyasi॥03-287-11॥
[उपस्थास्यति (upasthāsyati) - will approach; will attend; will serve; सा (sā) - she; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; पूजया (pūjayā) - with honor; by worship; अनवमन्या (anavamanyā) - without disrespect; not slighting; च (ca) - and; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; च (ca) - and; शीलवृत्तेन (śīlavṛttena) - by conduct and behavior; तुष्टिम् (tuṣṭim) - satisfaction; happiness; समुपयास्यसि (samupayāsyasi) - you will attain; you will reach;]
(She indeed will serve you with honor, not slighting you; and by her conduct and behavior, you will attain satisfaction.)
She will indeed serve you with respect, without slighting you; and through her character and behavior, you will find satisfaction. (03-287-11)
एवमुक्त्वा तु तं विप्रमभिपूज्य यथाविधि। उवाच कन्यामभ्येत्य पृथां पृथुललोचनाम् ॥०३-२८७-१२॥
evam-uktvā tu taṃ vipram abhipūjya yathā-vidhi। uvāca kanyām abhyetya pṛthām pṛthula-locanām॥03-287-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; विप्रम् (vipram) - Brahmin; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having duly honored; यथा-विधि (yathā-vidhi) - according to the rule; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; कन्याम् (kanyām) - the girl; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā; पृथुललोचनाम् (pṛthula-locanām) - large-eyed;]
(Thus having spoken but him Brahmin having duly honored according to the rule, he said to the girl, approaching Pṛthā, the large-eyed.)
Thus, having spoken, and after duly honoring that Brahmin according to the rule, he approached Pṛthā, the large-eyed, and said to the girl. (03-287-12)
अयं वत्से महाभागो ब्राह्मणो वस्तुमिच्छति। मम गेहे मया चास्य तथेत्येवं प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥०३-२८७-१३॥
ayaṃ vatse mahābhāgo brāhmaṇo vastum icchati। mama gehe mayā ca asya tathā iti evaṃ pratiśrutam॥03-287-13॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; वत्से (vatse) - O child; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to stay; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; मम (mama) - my; गेहे (gehe) - in (the) house; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; एवम् (evaṃ) - in this manner; प्रतिश्रुतम् (pratiśrutam) - has been promised;]
(This O child, the greatly fortunate brāhmaṇa desires to stay. In my house, by me to him, thus, so, in this manner, it has been promised.)
O child, this greatly fortunate brāhmaṇa wishes to stay. I have promised him in this manner that he may stay in my house. (03-287-13)
त्वयि वत्से पराश्वस्य ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधनम्। तन्मे वाक्यं न मिथ्या त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि कर्हिचित् ॥०३-२८७-१४॥
tvayi vatse parāśvasya brāhmaṇasya abhirādhanam। tan me vākyaṃ na mithyā tvaṃ kartum arhasi karhicit॥03-287-14॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वत्से (vatse) - O child; पराश्वस्य (parāśvasya) - of Parāśva; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; अभिराधनम् (abhirādhanam) - favoring; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - my; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - word; न (na) - not; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - deserve; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(In you, O child, of Parāśva the Brāhmaṇa, favoring; that my word not false you to do deserve ever.)
O child, you must never make my word, regarding the favor to Parāśva the Brāhmaṇa, false at any time. (03-287-14)
अयं तपस्वी भगवान्स्वाध्यायनियतो द्विजः। यद्यद्ब्रूयान्महातेजास्तत्तद्देयममत्सरात् ॥०३-२८७-१५॥
ayaṃ tapasvī bhagavān svādhyāya-niyato dvijaḥ। yadyad brūyāt mahā-tejās tat-tad deyam amat-sarāt ॥03-287-15॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; भगवान् (bhagavān) - holy one; स्वाध्यायनियतः (svādhyāya-niyataḥ) - devoted to svādhyāya (self-recitation or study); द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (Brahmin); यद्यद् (yadyad) - whatever; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - he should say; महातेजाः (mahā-tejāḥ) - of great splendor; तत्तत् (tat-tat) - each and every (that, that); देयम् (deyam) - should be given; अमत्सरात् (amat-sarāt) - without envy;]
(This ascetic, holy one, devoted to svādhyāya, twice-born; whatever (he) should say, great splendor, each and every (thing) should be given, without envy.)
This ascetic holy Brahmin, devoted to self-study, whatever he asks, endowed with great splendor, should be given everything he requests, without envy. (03-287-15)
ब्राह्मणा हि परं तेजो ब्राह्मणा हि परं तपः। ब्राह्मणानां नमस्कारैः सूर्यो दिवि विराजते ॥०३-२८७-१६॥
brāhmaṇā hi paraṃ tejo brāhmaṇā hi paraṃ tapaḥ। brāhmaṇānāṃ namaskāraiḥ sūryo divi virājate ॥03-287-16॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - brahmins; हि (hi) - indeed; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; तेजः (tejaḥ) - radiance; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - brahmins; हि (hi) - indeed; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of brahmins; नमस्कारैः (namaskāraiḥ) - by salutations; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; विराजते (virājate) - shines;]
(Brahmins indeed the supreme radiance, brahmins indeed the supreme austerity. By salutations of brahmins, the sun in the sky shines.)
Indeed, for brahmins are the supreme radiance; brahmins are the supreme austerity. By the salutations of brahmins, the sun shines in the sky. (03-287-16)
अमानयन्हि मानार्हान्वातापिश्च महासुरः। निहतो ब्रह्मदण्डेन तालजङ्घस्तथैव च ॥०३-२८७-१७॥
amānayan hi mānārhān vātāpiś ca mahāsuraḥ| nihato brahmadaṇḍena tālajaṅghas tathaiva ca ॥03-287-17॥
[अमानयन् (amānayan) - did not honor; did not respect; हि (hi) - indeed; verily; मानार्हान् (mānārhān) - those worthy of honor; वातापिः (vātāpiḥ) - Vātāpi; च (ca) - and; महासुरः (mahāsuraḥ) - great asura; great demon; निहतः (nihataḥ) - was slain; was struck down; ब्रह्मदण्डेन (brahmadaṇḍena) - by Brahma's staff; by the rod of Brahma; तालजङ्घः (tālajaṅghaḥ) - Tālajaṅgha; तथा (tathā) - likewise; similarly; एव (eva) - indeed; just; च (ca) - and;]
(Did not honor indeed those worthy of honor, Vātāpi and the great asura. Was struck down by Brahma's staff Tālajaṅgha likewise indeed and.)
Vātāpi and Tālajaṅgha, the great asuras who did not honor those worthy of respect, were also struck down by Brahma's staff. (03-287-17)
सोऽयं वत्से महाभार आहितस्त्वयि साम्प्रतम्। त्वं सदा नियता कुर्या ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधनम् ॥०३-२८७-१८॥
so'yaṃ vatse mahābhāra āhitastvayi sāmpratam। tvaṃ sadā niyatā kuryā brāhmaṇasyābhirādhanam॥03-287-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; वत्से (vatse) - O child; महाभार (mahābhāra) - great burden; आहितः (āhitaḥ) - placed; त्वयि (tvayi) - on you; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - now; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सदा (sadā) - always; नियता (niyatā) - restrained; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - should do; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; अभिराधनम् (abhirādhanam) - pleasing;]
(He, this great burden, O child, is now placed on you. You always, restrained, should do the pleasing of the brāhmaṇa.)
O child, this great burden has now been placed upon you. You should always, with restraint, strive to please the brāhmaṇa. (03-287-18)
जानामि प्रणिधानं ते बाल्यात्प्रभृति नन्दिनि। ब्राह्मणेष्विह सर्वेषु गुरुबन्धुषु चैव ह ॥०३-२८७-१९॥
jānāmi praṇidhānaṃ te bālyāt-prabhṛti nandini. brāhmaṇeṣv-iha sarveṣu gurubandhuṣu caiva ha ॥03-287-19॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; प्रणिधानम् (praṇidhānam) - devotion; ते (te) - your; बाल्यात्-प्रभृति (bālyāt-prabhṛti) - from childhood onward; नन्दिनि (nandini) - O Nandini; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among the brāhmaṇas; इह (iha) - here; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; गुरुबन्धुषु (gurubandhuṣu) - among teachers and kinsmen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(I know your devotion from childhood onward, O Nandini, among all the brāhmaṇas here and certainly among teachers and kinsmen.)
O Nandini, I have known your devotion since childhood, among all the brāhmaṇas here and indeed among teachers and relatives. (03-287-19)
तथा प्रेष्येषु सर्वेषु मित्रसम्बन्धिमातृषु। मयि चैव यथावत्त्वं सर्वमादृत्य वर्तसे ॥०३-२८७-२०॥
tathā preṣyeṣu sarveṣu mitrasambandhimātṛṣu। mayi caiva yathāvat tvaṃ sarvam ādṛtya vartase॥03-287-20॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रेष्येषु (preṣyeṣu) - among servants; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - among all; मित्रसम्बन्धिमातृषु (mitrasambandhimātṛṣu) - among friends, relatives, and mothers; मयि (mayi) - towards me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आदृत्य (ādṛtya) - having respected; वर्तसे (vartase) - you behave;]
(Thus among all servants, among friends, relatives, and mothers, and indeed towards me, you properly, having respected everything, behave.)
In the same way, among all the servants, among friends, relatives, and mothers, and towards me as well, you conduct yourself respectfully and properly in every matter. (03-287-20)
न ह्यतुष्टो जनोऽस्तीह पुरे चान्तःपुरे च ते। सम्यग्वृत्त्यानवद्याङ्गि तव भृत्यजनेष्वपि ॥०३-२८७-२१॥
na hyatuṣṭo jano'stīha pure cāntaḥpure ca te। samyagvṛttyānavadyāṅgi tava bhṛtyajaneṣvapi ॥03-287-21॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अतुष्टः (atuṣṭaḥ) - discontent; जनः (janaḥ) - person; अस्ति (asti) - exists; इह (iha) - here; पुरे (pure) - in the city; च (ca) - and; अन्तःपुरे (antaḥpure) - in the inner palace; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सम्यग्वृत्त्या (samyagvṛttyā) - by principled conduct; अनवद्याङ्गि (anavadyāṅgi) - O faultless lady; तव (tava) - your; भृत्यजनेषु (bhṛtyajaneṣu) - among your servants; अपि (api) - even;]
(Not indeed discontent person exists here in the city and in the inner palace and your, by principled conduct, O faultless lady, your among servants even.)
Indeed, there is not a single discontent person here in the city or in your inner palace, O faultless lady, even among your servants, due to your upright conduct. (03-287-21)
संदेष्टव्यां तु मन्ये त्वां द्विजातिं कोपनं प्रति। पृथे बालेति कृत्वा वै सुता चासि ममेति च ॥०३-२८७-२२॥
saṃdeṣṭavyāṃ tu manye tvāṃ dvijātiṃ kopanaṃ prati. pṛthe bāleti kṛtvā vai sutā cāsi mameti ca ॥03-287-22॥
[संदेष्टव्यां (saṃdeṣṭavyāṃ) - one to be sent (as a message); तु (tu) - but; मnye (manye) - I think; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; द्विजातिं (dvijātiṃ) - twice-born (brāhmaṇa); कोपनं (kopanaṃ) - angry; प्रति (prati) - towards; पृथे (pṛthe) - to Pṛthā (name); बाले (bāle) - O girl; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having considered; वै (vai) - indeed; सुता (sutā) - daughter; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; मम (mama) - my; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and;]
(But I think you are to be sent towards the angry twice-born, considering Pṛthā as "O girl!" and indeed (thinking) "You are my daughter", thus and thus.)
But I think you are to be sent to the angry brāhmaṇa, treating Pṛthā as "O girl!", and indeed as "You are my daughter". (03-287-22)
वृष्णीनां त्वं कुले जाता शूरस्य दयिता सुता। दत्ता प्रीतिमता मह्यं पित्रा बाला पुरा स्वयम् ॥०३-२८७-२३॥
vṛṣṇīnāṃ tvaṃ kule jātā śūrasya dayitā sutā। dattā prītimatā mahyaṃ pitrā bālā purā svayam॥03-287-23॥
[वृष्णीनां (vṛṣṇīnāṃ) - of the Vṛṣṇis; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कुले (kule) - in the family; जाता (jātā) - born; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of Śūra; दयिता (dayitā) - beloved; सुता (sutā) - daughter; दत्ता (dattā) - given; प्रीतिमता (prītimatā) - with affection; मद्यं (mahyaṃ) - to me; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (your) father; बाला (bālā) - as a girl; पुरा (purā) - formerly; स्वयम् (svayam) - personally; ॥०३-२८७-२३॥ (॥03-287-23॥) -;]
(Of the Vṛṣṇis you in the family born, of Śūra beloved daughter, given with affection to me by (your) father, as a girl, formerly, personally.)
You, born in the family of the Vṛṣṇis as the beloved daughter of Śūra, were formerly given to me personally by your affectionate father when you were a girl. (03-287-23)
वसुदेवस्य भगिनी सुतानां प्रवरा मम। अग्र्यमग्रे प्रतिज्ञाय तेनासि दुहिता मम ॥०३-२८७-२४॥
vasudevasya bhaginī sutānāṃ pravarā mama। agryam agre pratijñāya tenāsi duhitā mama॥03-287-24॥
[वसुदेवस्य (vasudevasya) - of Vasudeva; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; सुतानाम् (sutānām) - of sons; प्रवरा (pravarā) - the foremost; मम (mama) - my; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - the chief; अग्रे (agre) - in the beginning; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; तेन (tena) - by him; असि (asi) - you are; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; मम (mama) - my;]
(Of Vasudeva, sister, of sons the foremost my; the chief in the beginning having promised, by him you are daughter my.)
You, the sister of Vasudeva, are the finest among my sons; since he promised the chief one at the outset, by him you are my daughter. (03-287-24)
तादृशे हि कुले जाता कुले चैव विवर्धिता। सुखात्सुखमनुप्राप्ता ह्रदाद्ध्रदमिवागता ॥०३-२८७-२५॥
tādṛśe hi kule jātā kule caiva vivardhitā। sukhātsukham anuprāptā hradād hradam ivāgatā ॥03-287-25॥
[तादृशे (tādṛśe) - in such a (noble) one; हि (hi) - indeed; कुले (kule) - in a family; जाता (jātā) - born; कुले (kule) - in a family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - only; विवर्धिता (vivardhitā) - brought up; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; सुखम् (sukham) - to happiness; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - attained; ह्रदात् (hradāt) - from lake; ह्रदम् (hradam) - to lake; इव (iva) - like; आगता (āgatā) - arrived;]
(In such a (noble) one indeed, born in a family and only in a family brought up, from happiness to happiness attained, like from lake to lake arrived.)
Indeed, one born and raised in such a family has gone from happiness to happiness, like passing from one lake to another. (03-287-25)
दौष्कुलेया विशेषेण कथञ्चित्प्रग्रहं गताः। बालभावाद्विकुर्वन्ति प्रायशः प्रमदाः शुभे ॥०३-२८७-२६॥
dauṣkuleyā viśeṣeṇa kathañcit-pragrahaṁ gatāḥ। bālabhāvād vikurvanti prāyaśaḥ pramadāḥ śubhe॥03-287-26॥
[दौष्कुलेया (dauṣkuleyā) - women of inferior families; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - in some way; प्रग्रहं (pragraham) - attachment; गताः (gatāḥ) - have attained; बालभावात् (bālabhāvāt) - from childishness; विकुर्वन्ति (vikurvanti) - act improperly; प्रायशः (prāyaśaḥ) - generally; प्रमदाः (pramadāḥ) - women; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(Women of inferior families especially, in some way, attachment attained; from childishness, act improperly generally, women, O auspicious one.)
O auspicious lady, women of inferior families especially, having become attached in some way, generally act improperly out of childishness. (03-287-26)
पृथे राजकुले जन्म रूपं चाद्भुतदर्शनम्। तेन तेनासि सम्पन्ना समुपेता च भामिनी ॥०३-२८७-२७॥
pṛthe rājakule janma rūpaṃ cādbhutadarśanam। tena tenāsi sampannā samupetā ca bhāminī ॥03-287-27॥
[पृथे (pṛthe) - of Pṛthā; राजकुले (rājakule) - in the royal family; जन्म (janma) - birth; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; च (ca) - and; अद्भुतदर्शनम् (adbhutadarśanam) - wondrous appearance; तेन (tena) - by that; तेन (tena) - by that; असि (asi) - you are; सम्पन्ना (sampannā) - endowed (with); समुपेता (samupetā) - possessed (of); च (ca) - and; भामिनी (bhāminī) - O beautiful lady;]
(Of Pṛthā, in the royal family, birth, form, and wondrous appearance; by that, by that, you are endowed, possessed, and O beautiful lady.)
O beautiful lady, belonging to Pṛthā and born in the royal family, you possess a wondrous form and appearance; by that, you are endowed and blessed. (03-287-27)
सा त्वं दर्पं परित्यज्य दम्भं मानं च भामिनि। आराध्य वरदं विप्रं श्रेयसा योक्ष्यसे पृथे ॥०३-२८७-२८॥
sā tvaṁ darpaṁ parityajya dambhaṁ mānaṁ ca bhāmini। ārādhya varadaṁ vipraṁ śreyasā yokṣyase pṛthe ॥03-287-28॥
[सा (sā) - she; that one; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; दर्पं (darpaṁ) - pride; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; दम्भं (dambhaṁ) - hypocrisy; मानं (mānaṁ) - arrogance; च (ca) - and; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O passionate (woman); आराध्य (ārādhya) - having worshipped; वरदं (varadaṁ) - bestower of boons; विप्रं (vipraṁ) - Brahmin; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - for prosperity; योक्ष्यसे (yokṣyase) - you will join; पृथे (pṛthe) - with Pṛthā;]
(She, you, having abandoned pride, hypocrisy, and arrogance, O passionate one, having worshipped the boon-bestowing Brahmin, for prosperity, you will join with Pṛthā.)
O passionate one, having given up pride, hypocrisy, and arrogance, and having worshipped the Brahmin who grants boons, you will, for your own good, be joined with Pṛthā. (03-287-28)
एवं प्राप्स्यसि कल्याणि कल्याणमनघे ध्रुवम्। कोपिते तु द्विजश्रेष्ठे कृत्स्नं दह्येत मे कुलम् ॥०३-२८७-२९॥
evaṃ prāpsyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇam anaghe dhruvam। kopite tu dvijaśreṣṭhe kṛtsnaṃ dahyeta me kulam॥03-287-29॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will attain; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious lady; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - welfare; अनघे (anaghe) - O spotless one; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; कोपिते (kopite) - when made angry; तु (tu) - but; द्विजश्रेष्ठे (dvijaśreṣṭhe) - O best of twice-born; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; दह्येत (dahyeta) - would be burnt; मे (me) - my; कुलम् (kulam) - family;]
(Thus you will attain, O auspicious lady, welfare, O spotless one, certainly. When made angry but, O best of twice-born, the entire would be burnt my family.)
Thus, O auspicious and spotless lady, you will certainly attain welfare. But if the best of the twice-born is angered, my entire family would be destroyed. (03-287-29)
