वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
सा तु कन्या बहुविधं ब्रुवन्ती मधुरं वचः। अनुनेतुं सहस्रांशुं न शशाक मनस्विनी ॥०३-२९१-१॥
But though the maiden, noble-minded, spoke sweet words in many ways, she was not able to conciliate the Sun. (03-291-1)
न शशाक यदा बाला प्रत्याख्यातुं तमोनुदम्। भीता शापात्ततो राजन्दध्यौ दीर्घमथान्तरम् ॥०३-२९१-२॥
O King, when the girl was not able to reject the dispeller of darkness, being afraid of the curse, she then pondered for a long interval. (03-291-2)
अनागसः पितुः शापो ब्राह्मणस्य तथैव च। मन्निमित्तः कथं न स्यात्क्रुद्धादस्माद्विभावसोः ॥०३-२९१-३॥
How could the curse of my sinless father or the brāhmaṇa, caused by me, not arise from the anger of this Agni? (03-291-3)
बालेनापि सता मोहाद्भृशं सापह्नवान्यपि। नात्यासादयितव्यानि तेजांसि च तपांसि च ॥०३-२९१-४॥
Energies and austerities should never be closely approached—greatly, they are to be entirely avoided, even by a virtuous person or a mere child, out of delusion. (03-291-4)
साहमद्य भृशं भीता गृहीता च करे भृशम्। कथं त्वकार्यं कुर्यां वै प्रदानं ह्यात्मनः स्वयम् ॥०३-२९१-५॥
Today, being she who is intensely frightened and seized tightly by the hand, how indeed should I commit such an improper act as giving myself by myself? (03-291-5)
सैवं शापपरित्रस्ता बहु चिन्तयती तदा। मोहेनाभिपरीताङ्गी स्मयमाना पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२९१-६॥
Thus, she, frightened by the curse, was deeply contemplating at that time; her body overtaken by delusion, she kept smiling again and again. (03-291-6)
तं देवमब्रवीद्भीता बन्धूनां राजसत्तम। व्रीडाविह्वलया वाचा शापत्रस्ता विशां पते ॥०३-२९१-७॥
Frightened for her relatives and terrified by the curse, she addressed that god with a voice overcome by shame, O best among kings, O lord of the people. (03-291-7)
कुन्त्युवाच॥
Kunti said;
पिता मे ध्रियते देव माता चान्ये च बान्धवाः। न तेषु ध्रियमाणेषु विधिलोपो भवेदयम् ॥०३-२९१-८॥
O god, my father, mother and other relatives are maintained (by me); in supporting them, no omission of prescribed rule occurs by this. (03-291-8)
त्वया मे सङ्गमो देव यदि स्याद्विधिवर्जितः। मन्निमित्तं कुलस्यास्य लोके कीर्तिर्नशेत्ततः ॥०३-२९१-९॥
O lord, if there were union between you and me, devoid of proper rule, then for my sake the fame of this family in the world would therefore be destroyed. (03-291-9)
अथ वा धर्ममेतं त्वं मन्यसे तपतां वर। ऋते प्रदानाद्बन्धुभ्यस्तव कामं करोम्यहम् ॥०३-२९१-१०॥
But if you think this is virtue, O best of ascetics, then without giving (anything) to your relatives, I will do your wish. (03-291-10)
आत्मप्रदानं दुर्धर्ष तव कृत्वा सती त्वहम्। त्वयि धर्मो यशश्चैव कीर्तिरायुश्च देहिनाम् ॥०३-२९१-११॥
Having offered myself to you, O irresistible one, I, being a chaste wife, indeed (declare): in you dwell righteousness, fame, renown, and the very life of all embodied beings. (03-291-11)
सूर्य उवाच॥
The Sun said.
न ते पिता न ते माता गुरवो वा शुचिस्मिते। प्रभवन्ति वरारोहे भद्रं ते शृणु मे वचः ॥०३-२९१-१२॥
Neither your father, nor your mother, nor preceptors, O pure-smiling one, can do this for you. O beautiful-hipped lady, may good befall you; listen to my words. (03-291-12)
सर्वान्कामयते यस्मात्कनेर्धातोश्च भामिनि। तस्मात्कन्येह सुश्रोणि स्वतन्त्रा वरवर्णिनि ॥०३-२९१-१३॥
Because the root 'kana' means 'to desire all', O beautiful lady, therefore the maiden is here considered independent, O lady of beautiful hips and excellent complexion. (03-291-13)
नाधर्मश्चरितः कश्चित्त्वया भवति भामिनि। अधर्मं कुत एवाहं चरेयं लोककाम्यया ॥०३-२९१-१४॥
No unrighteous act has been done by you, O beautiful one. How, then, would I perform an unrighteous deed just for the sake of public approval? (03-291-14)
अनावृताः स्त्रियः सर्वा नराश्च वरवर्णिनि। स्वभाव एष लोकानां विकारोऽन्य इति स्मृतः ॥०३-२९१-१५॥
O woman of excellent complexion, all women and men are unveiled; this is considered the natural disposition of people, and another is called a deviation. (03-291-15)
सा मया सह सङ्गम्य पुनः कन्या भविष्यसि। पुत्रश्च ते महाबाहुर्भविष्यति महायशाः ॥०३-२९१-१६॥
She, joining with me, will be born again as a girl. And your son will be of mighty arms and great renown. (03-291-16)
कुन्त्युवाच॥
Kunti said.
यदि पुत्रो मम भवेत्त्वत्तः सर्वतमोपह। कुण्डली कवची शूरो महाबाहुर्महाबलः ॥०३-२९१-१७॥
If a son born to me from you were to be the remover of all darkness, adorned with earrings, clad in armor, heroic, with mighty arms and great strength. (03-291-17)
सूर्य उवाच॥
The Sun said.
भविष्यति महाबाहुः कुण्डली दिव्यवर्मभृत्। उभयं चामृतमयं तस्य भद्रे भविष्यति ॥०३-२९१-१८॥
He will be mighty-armed, wearing earrings and divine armor. Both will be made of immortal substance for him, O auspicious one. (03-291-18)
कुन्त्युवाच॥
Kunti said.
यद्येतदमृतादस्ति कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम्। मम पुत्रस्य यं वै त्वं मत्त उत्पादयिष्यसि ॥०३-२९१-१९॥
If these—the earrings and excellent armor that originate from nectar—which you will indeed obtain from me for my son, exist. (03-291-19)
अस्तु मे सङ्गमो देव यथोक्तं भगवंस्त्वया। त्वद्वीर्यरूपसत्त्वौजा धर्मयुक्तो भवेत्स च ॥०३-२९१-२०॥
Let the union take place for me, O god, as you have declared, O revered one. May he possess your strength, form, vitality, and energy, and be endowed with righteousness. (03-291-20)
सूर्य उवाच॥
The Sun said.
अदित्या कुण्डले राज्ञि दत्ते मे मत्तकाशिनि। तेऽस्य दास्यामि वै भीरु वर्म चैवेदमुत्तमम् ॥०३-२९१-२१॥
O queen with intoxicated eyes, these earrings of Aditi that were given to me—I will indeed give them to you, timid one, and also this excellent armor. (03-291-21)
पृथोवाच॥
Pṛtha said.
परमं भगवन्देव सङ्गमिष्ये त्वया सह। यदि पुत्रो भवेदेवं यथा वदसि गोपते ॥०३-२९१-२२॥
O supreme Lord, O god, I will unite with you if, as you say, O lord of cows, a son will be born as such. (03-291-22)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तां कुन्तीमाविवेश विहङ्गमः। स्वर्भानुशत्रुर्योगात्मा नाभ्यां पस्पर्श चैव ताम् ॥०३-२९१-२३॥
Having thus spoken, the bird—enemy of Svarbhānu, possessed of mystical power—entered Kuntī and touched her by the navel. (03-291-23)
ततः सा विह्वलेवासीत्कन्या सूर्यस्य तेजसा। पपाताथ च सा देवी शयने मूढचेतना ॥०३-२९१-२४॥
Then, overcome by the sun's brilliance, the maiden was as if bewildered. The goddess with a confused mind fell onto the bed. (03-291-24)
सूर्य उवाच॥
The Sun said.
साधयिष्यामि सुश्रोणि पुत्रं वै जनयिष्यसि। सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं कन्या चैव भविष्यसि ॥०३-२९१-२५॥
O beautiful-hipped lady, I will accomplish this: you will give birth to a son, who will be the best among all wielders of weapons, and you will also become the mother of a daughter. (03-291-25)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततः सा व्रीडिता बाला तदा सूर्यमथाब्रवीत्। एवमस्त्विति राजेन्द्र प्रस्थितं भूरिवर्चसम् ॥०३-२९१-२६॥
Then that ashamed girl spoke to the Sun at that moment. "So let it be," she said, O king, when the one of great splendour was about to depart. (03-291-26)
इति स्मोक्ता कुन्तिराजात्मजा सा; विवस्वन्तं याचमाना सलज्जा। तस्मिन्पुण्ये शयनीये पपात; मोहाविष्टा भज्यमाना लतेव ॥०३-२९१-२७॥
Having thus spoken, the daughter of King Kunti, bashful, begged Vivasvant; then, overcome by delusion, she fell on that holy couch, being broken like a creeper. (03-291-27)
तां तिग्मांशुस्तेजसा मोहयित्वा; योगेनाविष्यात्मसंस्थां चकार। न चैवैनां दूषयामास भानुः; सञ्ज्ञां लेभे भूय एवाथ बाला ॥०३-२९१-२८॥
The sun, having bewildered her with his brilliance, by union entered her own self. Yet the sun did not defile her; then the girl regained consciousness. (03-291-28)
