धर्मेण तेऽभ्यनुज्ञाताः पाण्डवाः सत्यविक्रमाः। अज्ञातवासं वत्स्यन्तश्छन्ना वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ॥ उपोपविश्य विद्वांसः सहिताः संशितव्रताः ॥०३-२९९-१॥
dharmeṇa te’bhyanujñātāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ satyavikramāḥ। ajñātavāsaṃ vatsyantaśchannā varṣaṃ trayodaśam ॥ upopaviśya vidvāṃsaḥ sahitāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ॥03-299-1॥
[धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; तेऽभ्यनुज्ञाताः (te’bhyanujñātāḥ) - they permitted; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सत्यविक्रमाः (satyavikramāḥ) - true in prowess; अज्ञातवासं (ajñātavāsaṃ) - unknown-dwelling; वत्स्यन्तः (vatsyantaḥ) - will dwell; छन्नाः (channāḥ) - concealed; वर्षं (varṣam) - year; त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - thirteenth; उपोपविश्य (upopaviśya) - having sat down nearby; विद्वांसः (vidvāṃsaḥ) - scholars; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm in vows;]
(By dharma they permitted, the Pāṇḍavas, true in prowess, unknown-dwelling, will dwell, concealed, year, thirteenth. Having sat down nearby, scholars, together, firm in vows.)
Permitted by dharma, the Pāṇḍavas, true in prowess, will dwell concealed for the thirteenth year in unknown dwelling. Having sat together, the scholars, firm in vows, (said thus). (03-299-1)
ये तद्भक्ता वसन्ति स्म वनवासे तपस्विनः। तानब्रुवन्महात्मानः शिष्टाः प्राञ्जलयस्तदा ॥ अभ्यनुज्ञापयिष्यन्तस्तं निवासं धृतव्रताः ॥०३-२९९-२॥
ye tadbhaktā vasanti sma vanavāse tapasvinaḥ। tān abruvan mahātmānaḥ śiṣṭāḥ prāñjalayas tadā॥ abhyanujñāpayiṣyantas taṃ nivāsaṃ dhṛtavratāḥ॥03-299-2॥
[ये (ye) - who; तद्भक्ता (tadbhaktāḥ) - devoted to him; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; स्म (sma) - indeed; वनवासे (vanavāse) - in the forest dwelling; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; तान् (tān) - them; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - addressed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; शिष्टाः (śiṣṭāḥ) - noble ones; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with joined palms; तदा (tadā) - then; अभ्यनुज्ञापयिष्यन्तः (abhyanujñāpayiṣyantaḥ) - about to ask for permission; तं (tam) - that; निवासं (nivāsaṃ) - residence; धृतव्रताः (dhṛtavratāḥ) - steadfast in vows;]
(Who devoted to him dwell indeed in the forest dwelling, ascetics; them the great souls, noble ones, with joined palms, then addressed. About to ask permission for that residence, steadfast in vows.)
The ascetics devoted to him who indeed dwelt in the forest, the noble and great souls with joined palms addressed them then, being steadfast in vows, about to ask his permission for that dwelling. (03-299-2)
विदितं भवतां सर्वं धार्तराष्ट्रैर्यथा वयम्। छद्मना हृतराज्याश्च निःस्वाश्च बहुशः कृताः ॥०३-२९९-३॥
viditaṃ bhavatāṃ sarvaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrair yathā vayam। chadmanā hṛtarājyāś ca niḥsvāś ca bahuśaḥ kṛtāḥ ॥03-299-3॥
[विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; भवतां (bhavatām) - to you (all); सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭrair) - by the sons of Dhritarashtra; यथा (yathā) - how; वयम् (vayam) - we; छद्मना (chadmanā) - by deceit; हृतराज्याः (hṛtarājyāḥ) - deprived of kingdom; च (ca) - and; निःस्वाः (niḥsvāḥ) - bereft of possessions; च (ca) - and; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - have been made;]
(All is known to you, how by the sons of Dhritarashtra we, by deceit, have been deprived of kingdom and bereft of possessions, and have many times been made (thus).)
You know everything—how we have been deprived of our kingdom and possessions many times by the sons of Dhritarashtra through deceit. (03-299-3)
उषिताश्च वने कृच्छ्रं यत्र द्वादश वत्सरान्। अज्ञातवाससमयं शेषं वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ॥ तद्वत्स्यामो वयं छन्नास्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥०३-२९९-४॥
uṣitāś ca vane kṛcchraṃ yatra dvādaśa vatsarān। ajñātavāsasamayaṃ śeṣaṃ varṣaṃ trayodaśam ॥ tad vatsyāmo vayaṃ channās tad anujñātum arhatha ॥03-299-4॥
[उषिताः (uṣitāḥ) - dwelt; च (ca) - and; वने (vane) - in the forest; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - with difficulty; यत्र (yatra) - where; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वत्सरान् (vatsarān) - years; अज्ञातवाससमयं (ajñātavāsasamayam) - the period of incognito residence; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remaining; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - thirteenth; तत् (tat) - that; वत्स्यामः (vatsyāmaḥ) - we shall live; वयम् (vayam) - we; छन्नाः (channāḥ) - hidden; तत् (tat) - that; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(And we have dwelt in the forest with difficulty where (for) twelve years; the remaining period of incognito residence is the thirteenth year; that we shall live, hidden; that, you ought to permit.)
We have endured dwelling in the forest for twelve years; the thirteenth year is the remaining period of incognito residence, which we shall pass in concealment; you ought to permit that. (03-299-4)
सुयोधनश्च दुष्टात्मा कर्णश्च सहसौबलः। जानन्तो विषमं कुर्युरस्मास्वत्यन्तवैरिणः ॥ युक्ताचाराश्च युक्ताश्च पौरस्य स्वजनस्य च ॥०३-२९९-५॥
suyodhanaś ca duṣṭātmā karṇaś ca sahasaubalaḥ। jānanto viṣamaṃ kuryur asmāsv atyantavairiṇaḥ॥ yuktācārāś ca yuktāś ca paurasya sva-janasya ca॥03-299-5॥
[सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Su-yodhana (proper name, Dur-yodhana); च (ca) - and; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - evil-minded; (duṣṭa-ātman) कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa (proper name); च (ca) - and; सहसौबलः (saha-saubalaḥ) - with Saubala (the son of Subala, i.e., Śakuni); जानन्तः (jānantaḥ) - knowing; विषमम् (viṣamam) - unfairness; (unequal, unjust action; hardship; adversity) कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - might do; (would perform; third person plural optative) अस्मासु (asmāsu) - toward us; अत्यन्तवैरिणः (atyanta-vairiṇaḥ) - extreme enemies; युक्ताचाराः (yuktācārāḥ) - proper in conduct; (of right behaviour; honest; prudent in behaviour) च (ca) - and; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - connected; suitable; loyal; prudent; च (ca) - and; पौरस्य (paurasya) - of the citizens; स्वजनस्य (svajanasya) - of one's own people; च (ca) - and;]
(Su-yodhana and the evil-minded Karṇa and (he) with Saubala, knowing unfairness, might do toward us (because they are) extreme enemies. And those of right conduct and those suitable of the citizens and of one's own people.)
Su-yodhana, the evil-minded Karṇa, and Saubala (Śakuni) may, knowing what is unfair, act against us because they are our extreme enemies. Those of upright conduct and prudent character among the citizens and our own people (support us). (03-299-5)
अपि नस्तद्भवेद्भूयो यद्वयं ब्राह्मणैः सह। समस्ताः स्वेषु राष्ट्रेषु स्वराज्यस्था भवेमहि ॥०३-२९९-६॥
api nastadbhavedbhūyo yadvayaṃ brāhmaṇaiḥ saha। samastāḥ sveṣu rāṣṭreṣu svarājyasthā bhavemahi॥03-299-6॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; even; perhaps; नः (naḥ) - to us; for us; तद् (tad) - that; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be; may become; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; further; यत् (yat) - that; which; वयम् (vayam) - we; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with brahmins; सह (saha) - together; with; समस्ताः (samastāḥ) - all; entire; स्वेषु (sveṣu) - in own; in one’s own; राष्ट्रेषु (rāṣṭreṣu) - in kingdoms; in territories; स्वराज्यस्था (svarājyasthā) - abiding in our own rule; established in our own sovereignty; भवेमहि (bhavemahi) - may we be; may we become;]
(Indeed, may that be again for us, that we, together with the brahmins, all, in our own territories, abiding in our own sovereignty, may be.)
May it indeed happen again for us, that we all, together with the brahmins, may live established in our sovereignty in our own kingdoms. (03-299-6)
इत्युक्त्वा दुःखशोकार्तः शुचिर्धर्मसुतस्तदा। संमूर्छितोऽभवद्राजा साश्रुकण्ठो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२९९-७॥
ity uktvā duḥkha-śoka-ārtaḥ śuciḥ dharma-sutaḥ tadā। saṁmūrcchito'bhavad rājā sa-aśru-kaṇṭhaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥03-299-7॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; दुःखशोकार्तः (duḥkha-śoka-ārtaḥ) - afflicted by pain and grief; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; धर्मसुतः (dharma-sutaḥ) - son of Dharma; तदा (tadā) - then; संमूर्छितः (saṁmūrcchitaḥ) - fainted; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजा (rājā) - the king; साश्रुकण्ठः (sa-aśru-kaṇṭhaḥ) - with tearful throat; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus having spoken, afflicted by pain and grief, pure, the son of Dharma, then fainted became the king, with tearful throat, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Having spoken thus, the pure Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Dharma, afflicted by pain and grief, then fainted; the king's throat filled with tears. (03-299-7)
तमथाश्वासयन्सर्वे ब्राह्मणा भ्रातृभिः सह। अथ धौम्योऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं महार्थं नृपतिं तदा ॥०३-२९९-८॥
tam athāśvāsayan sarve brāhmaṇā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। atha dhaumyo 'bravīd vākyaṃ mahārthaṃ nṛpatiṃ tadā ॥03-299-8॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अथ (atha) - then; आश्वासयन् (āśvāsayan) - consoling; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; अथ (atha) - then; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - word; महा-अर्थम् (mahārtham) - of great import; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - the king; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Him then consoling all Brāhmaṇas together with his brothers; then Dhaumya spoke a word of great import to the king at that time.)
Then all the Brāhmaṇas, together with his brothers, consoled him; then Dhaumya spoke a word of great import to the king at that time. (03-299-8)
राजन्विद्वान्भवान्दान्तः सत्यसन्धो जितेन्द्रियः। नैवंविधाः प्रमुह्यन्ति नराः कस्याञ्चिदापदि ॥०३-२९९-९॥
rājan vidvān bhavān dāntaḥ satyasandho jitendriyaḥ। na evaṃvidhāḥ pramuhyanti narāḥ kasyāñcid āpadi॥03-299-9॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned one; भवान् (bhavān) - you; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-restrained; सत्यसन्धः (satyasandhaḥ) - truthful; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are conquered; न (na) - not; एवंविधाः (evaṃvidhāḥ) - such as these; प्रमुह्यन्ति (pramuhyanti) - become deluded; नराः (narāḥ) - men; कस्याञ्चित् (kasyāñcit) - in any; आपदि (āpadi) - calamity;]
(O king, you, a learned one, self-restrained, truthful and one whose senses are conquered—not such as these men become deluded in any calamity.)
O king, a learned, self-restrained, truthful man who has conquered his senses like you does not become deluded in any calamity. (03-299-9)
देवैरप्यापदः प्राप्ताश्छन्नैश्च बहुशस्तथा। तत्र तत्र सपत्नानां निग्रहार्थं महात्मभिः ॥०३-२९९-१०॥
devair apy āpadaḥ prāptāḥ channaiś ca bahuśas tathā। tatra tatra sapatnānāṃ nigrahārthaṃ mahātmabhiḥ॥03-299-10॥
[देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; आपदः (āpadaḥ) - troubles; hardships; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - were encountered; छन्नैः (channaiḥ) - by being concealed; by secrecy; च (ca) - and; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; in various places; सपत्नानाम् (sapatnānām) - of rivals; of adversaries; निग्रहार्थम् (nigrahārtham) - for the sake of destruction; for the purpose of restraining; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great souls; by noble beings;]
(Even by the gods, hardships were encountered many times by concealment, thus here and there, for the destruction of rivals, by noble souls.)
Even the gods have often faced troubles by acting secretly, here and there, for the purpose of subduing their rivals, by the noble ones. (03-299-10)
इन्द्रेण निषधान्प्राप्य गिरिप्रस्थाश्रमे तदा। छन्नेनोष्य कृतं कर्म द्विषतां बलनिग्रहे ॥०३-२९९-११॥
indreṇa niṣadhān prāpya giriprasthāśrame tadā। channenauṣya kṛtaṃ karma dviṣatāṃ balanigrahe ॥03-299-11॥
[इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; निषधान् (niṣadhān) - Niṣadha people; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; गिरिप्रस्थाश्रमे (giriprasthāśrame) - in the hermitage at the mountain plateau; तदा (tadā) - then; छन्नेन (channenā) - by the concealed (disguised one); उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; द्विषतां (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; बलनिग्रहे (balanigrahe) - in the restraint of strength.;]
(By Indra, having obtained the Niṣadha people, in the hermitage at the mountain plateau then, by the concealed one having stayed, the action was done in the restraint of strength of the enemies.)
Then, by Indra, having reached the Niṣadha people in the hermitage on the mountain plateau, an act was performed, while staying concealed, to restrain the strength of the enemies. (03-299-11)
विष्णुनाश्वशिरः प्राप्य तथादित्यां निवत्स्यता। गर्भे वधार्थं दैत्यानामज्ञातेनोषितं चिरम् ॥०३-२९९-१२॥
viṣṇunā aśvaśiraḥ prāpya tathā adityām nivatsyatā। garbhe vadhārtham daityānām ajñātena uṣitam ciram॥03-299-12॥
[विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; अश्वशिरः (aśvaśiraḥ) - Aśvaśiras; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अदित्याम् (adityām) - in Aditi; निवत्स्यता (nivatsyatā) - with the intention to dwell as offspring; गर्भे (garbhe) - in the womb; वधार्थम् (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of destruction; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; अज्ञातेन (ajñātena) - unrecognized; उषितम् (uṣitam) - stayed; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time;]
(By Viṣṇu, Aśvaśiras having obtained (this form), likewise (being) in Aditi, with the intention to dwell as offspring, in the womb, for the destruction of the Daityas, unrecognized, he stayed for a long time.)
Aśvaśiras, having been obtained by Viṣṇu, likewise entered into Aditi with the intention of being born as her son, and unrecognized, dwelt in her womb for a long time for the destruction of the Daityas. (03-299-12)
प्राप्य वामनरूपेण प्रच्छन्नं ब्रह्मरूपिणा। बलेर्यथा हृतं राज्यं विक्रमैस्तच्च ते श्रुतम् ॥०३-२९९-१३॥
prāpya vāmanarūpeṇa pracchannaṃ brahmarūpiṇā। baleryathā hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ vikramaistac ca te śrutam ॥03-299-13॥
[प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; वामनरूपेण (vāmanarūpeṇa) - by the form of Vāmana; प्रच्छन्नं (pracchannam) - concealed; ब्रह्मरूपिणा (brahmarūpiṇā) - by one assuming the form of Brahman; बलेः (baleḥ) - of Bali; यथा (yathā) - as; हृतं (hṛtam) - was taken away; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; विक्रमैः (vikramaiḥ) - by (acts of) strides; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard;]
(Having attained (the form) by the form of Vāmana, concealed by one assuming the form of Brahman, as the kingdom of Bali was taken away by (acts of) strides, that and to you has been heard.)
Having assumed the form of Vāmana, concealed in the form of Brahman, the way the kingdom of Bali was seized by valorous strides, this too you have heard. (03-299-13)
और्वेण वसता छन्नमूरौ ब्रह्मर्षिणा तदा। यत्कृतं तात लोकेषु तच्च सर्वं श्रुतं त्वया ॥०३-२९९-१४॥
aurveṇa vasatā channamūrau brahmarṣiṇā tadā। yat-kṛtaṃ tāta lokeṣu tacca sarvaṃ śrutaṃ tvayā॥03-299-14॥
[और्वेण (aurveṇa) - by Aurva; by (the sage) Aurva; वसता (vasatā) - living; dwelling; छन्नमूरौ (channamūrau) - in Channamūra; at Channamūra; ब्रह्मर्षिणा (brahmarṣiṇā) - by the brahmarṣi; by the sage; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; यत् (yat) - what; which; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; तात (tāta) - O dear; O dear one; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; among people; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; श्रुतं (śrutaṃ) - heard; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(By (the sage) Aurva, dwelling in Channamūra at that time, what was done, O dear, among people—that, and all (else), has been heard by you.)
O dear one, whatever the sage Aurva did while living in Channamūra at that time, and everything else in the worlds, you have already heard. (03-299-14)
प्रच्छन्नं चापि धर्मज्ञ हरिणा वृत्रनिग्रहे। वज्रं प्रविश्य शक्रस्य यत्कृतं तच्च ते श्रुतम् ॥०३-२९९-१५॥
pracchannaṃ cāpi dharmajña hariṇā vṛtranigrahe । vajraṃ praviśya śakrasya yat kṛtaṃ tac ca te śrutam ॥03-299-15॥
[प्रच्छन्नम् (pracchannam) - concealed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; हरिणा (hariṇā) - by Hari; वृत्रनिग्रहे (vṛtranigrahe) - in the slaying of Vṛtra; वज्रं (vajram) - the thunderbolt; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; यत् (yat) - what; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - by you; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(Concealed and also, O knower of dharma, by Hari, in the slaying of Vṛtra, having entered the thunderbolt of Śakra, what was done—that also has been heard by you.)
And also, O knower of dharma, you have heard what was done by Hari, who, concealed, entered the thunderbolt of Indra during the slaying of Vṛtra. (03-299-15)
हुताशनेन यच्चापः प्रविश्य छन्नमासता। विबुधानां कृतं कर्म तच्च सर्वं श्रुतं त्वया ॥०३-२९९-१६॥
hutāśanena yaccāpaḥ praviśya channamāsatā। vibudhānāṃ kṛtaṃ karma tacca sarvaṃ śrutaṃ tvayā ॥03-299-16॥
[हुताशनेन (hutāśanena) - by Agni (the fire-god); यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; छन्नम् (channam) - secretly; आसता (āsatā) - having remained; विबुधानाम् (vibudhānām) - of the gods; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - was heard; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(By Agni, which and waters having entered, secretly remained; of the gods, done action, that and all was heard by you.)
All that was done by the gods, which Agni, having entered the waters and remained there in secret, and all of that, was heard by you. (03-299-16)
एवं विवस्वता तात छन्नेनोत्तमतेजसा। निर्दग्धाः शत्रवः सर्वे वसता भुवि सर्वशः ॥०३-२९९-१७॥
evaṁ vivasvatā tāta channena uttamatejasā। nirdagdhāḥ śatravaḥ sarve vasatā bhuvi sarvaśaḥ॥03-299-17॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; विवस्वता (vivasvatā) - by Vivasvat (the Sun); तात (tāta) - O dear one; छन्नेन (channena) - concealed; उत्तमतेजसा (uttamatejasā) - with supreme splendor; निर्दग्धाः (nirdagdhāḥ) - burned up; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वसता (vasatā) - while dwelling; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely, in every way;]
(Thus, O dear one, by Vivasvat (the Sun), concealed with supreme splendor, all enemies were burned up entirely while dwelling on earth.)
In this way, O dear one, by Vivasvat, hidden in supreme brilliance, all the enemies were completely destroyed while living on the earth. (03-299-17)
विष्णुना वसता चापि गृहे दशरथस्य वै। दशग्रीवो हतश्छन्नं संयुगे भीमकर्मणा ॥०३-२९९-१८॥
viṣṇunā vasatā cāpi gṛhe daśarathasya vai। daśagrīvo hataśchannaṃ saṃyuge bhīmakarmaṇā ॥03-299-18॥
[विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; वसता (vasatā) - dwelling; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; दशरथस्य (daśarathasya) - of Daśaratha; वै (vai) - indeed; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - Daśagrīva; हतश्छन्नम् (hataśchannam) - slain and concealed; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; भीमकर्मणा (bhīmakarmaṇā) - by one of terrible deeds;]
(By Viṣṇu dwelling also in the house of Daśaratha indeed, Daśagrīva, slain and concealed, in battle by one of terrible deeds.)
While Viṣṇu was residing in the house of Daśaratha, Daśagrīva was indeed slain and hidden in battle by one of terrible deeds. (03-299-18)
एवमेते महात्मानः प्रच्छन्नास्तत्र तत्र ह। अजयञ्शात्रवान्युद्धे तथा त्वमपि जेष्यसि ॥०३-२९९-१९॥
evam ete mahātmānaḥ pracchannās tatra tatra ha। ajayañ śatrūn yuddhe tathā tvam api jeṣyasi॥03-299-19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एते (ete) - these; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; प्रच्छन्नाः (pracchannāḥ) - concealed; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; ह (ha) - indeed; अजयन् (ajayan) - they conquered; शात्रवान् (śatrūn) - enemies; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; जेष्यसि (jeṣyasi) - will conquer;]
(Thus, these great souls, concealed here and there indeed, conquered enemies in battle; so you also will conquer.)
In the same way, these great souls, being concealed in various places, indeed conquered their enemies in battle; so you too will conquer. (03-299-19)
तथा धौम्येन धर्मज्ञो वाक्यैः सम्परितोषितः। शास्त्रबुद्ध्या स्वबुद्ध्या च न चचाल युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२९९-२०॥
tathā dhaumyana dharmajño vākyaiḥ samparitoṣitaḥ। śāstrabuddhyā svabuddhyā ca na cacāla yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥03-299-20॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; धौम्येन (dhaumyena) - by Dhaumya; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by words; सम्परितोषितः (samparitoṣitaḥ) - completely satisfied; शास्त्रबुद्ध्या (śāstrabuddhyā) - with wisdom from scripture; स्वबुद्ध्या (svabuddhyā) - with his own wisdom; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; चचाल (cacāla) - wavered; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus, by Dhaumya, the knower of dharma, having been completely satisfied by words, with wisdom from scripture and with his own wisdom and not wavered Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Thus, Yudhiṣṭhira, having been completely satisfied with the words of Dhaumya, the knower of dharma, did not waver, using both the wisdom from scripture and his own understanding. (03-299-20)
अथाब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः। राजानं बलिनां श्रेष्ठो गिरा सम्परिहर्षयन् ॥०३-२९९-२१॥
athābravīn mahābāhur bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। rājānaṃ balināṃ śreṣṭho girā sampariharṣayan ॥03-299-21॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the powerful (ones); श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; गिरा (girā) - with (his) speech; सम्परिहर्षयन् (sampariharṣayan) - greatly delighting;]
(Then said the mighty-armed Bhīmasena of great strength, greatly delighting the king, the best among the powerful, with (his) speech.)
Then the mighty-armed Bhīmasena, who was of great strength, spoke words that brought great delight to the king, the foremost among the powerful ones. (03-299-21)
अवेक्षया महाराज तव गाण्डीवधन्वना। धर्मानुगतया बुद्ध्या न किञ्चित्साहसं कृतम् ॥०३-२९९-२२॥
avekṣayā mahārāja tava gāṇḍīva-dhanvanā। dharmānugatayā buddhyā na kiñcit sāhasaṃ kṛtam ॥03-299-22॥
[अवेक्षया (avekṣayā) - with consideration; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तव (tava) - by your; गाण्डीवधन्वना (gāṇḍīva-dhanvanā) - by the Gāṇḍīva-bow bearer; धर्मानुगतया (dharmānugatayā) - guided by righteousness; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; साहसं (sāhasaṃ) - rash act; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(With consideration, O great king, by your Gāṇḍīva-bow bearer, by intellect guided by righteousness, not anything rash was done.)
O great king, nothing rash was done by your Gāṇḍīva-bow bearer; everything was acted with consideration and a mind guided by righteousness. (03-299-22)
सहदेवो मया नित्यं नकुलश्च निवारितौ। शक्तौ विध्वंसने तेषां शत्रुघ्नौ भीमविक्रमौ ॥०३-२९९-२३॥
sahadevo mayā nityaṁ nakulaś ca nivāritau। śaktau vidhvaṁsane teṣāṁ śatrughnau bhīmavikramau॥03-299-23॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; मया (mayā) - by me; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; च (ca) - and; निवारितौ (nivāritau) - prevented (dual); शक्तौ (śaktau) - capable (dual form); विध्वंसने (vidhvaṁsane) - in destruction; तेषां (teṣāṁ) - of them; शत्रुघ्नौ (śatrughnau) - destroyers of enemies (dual); भीमविक्रमौ (bhīmavikramau) - having terrible prowess (dual);]
(Sahadeva by me always Nakula and prevented (dual); capable in destruction of them destroyers of enemies, of terrible prowess (dual).)
Sahadeva and Nakula have always been restrained by me; both are capable of destroying their enemies, for they possess terrible prowess. (03-299-23)
न वयं तत्प्रहास्यामो यस्मिन्योक्ष्यति नो भवान्। भवान्विधत्तां तत्सर्वं क्षिप्रं जेष्यामहे परान् ॥०३-२९९-२४॥
na vayaṃ tatprahāsyāmo yasmin yokṣyati no bhavān। bhavān vidhattāṃ tat sarvaṃ kṣipraṃ jeṣyāmahe parān॥03-299-24॥
[न (na) - not; वयम् (vayam) - we; तत् (tat) - that; प्रहास्यामः (prahāsyāmaḥ) - will abandon; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; योक्ष्यति (yokṣyati) - he/she will employ; नः (naḥ) - us; भवान् (bhavān) - you; भवान् (bhavān) - you; विधत्ताम् (vidhattām) - may decide; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; जेष्यामहे (jeṣyāmahe) - we shall conquer; परान् (parān) - the enemies;]
(Not we that will abandon, in which you will employ us, O you; you decide that all quickly, we shall conquer the enemies.)
We will not abandon whatever task in which you employ us, O you; you just decide everything quickly—we shall soon conquer the enemies. (03-299-24)
इत्युक्ते भीमसेनेन ब्राह्मणाः परमाशिषः। प्रयुज्यापृच्छ्य भरतान्यथास्वान्स्वान्ययुर्गृहान् ॥०३-२९९-२५॥
ityukte bhīmasenena brāhmaṇāḥ paramāśiṣaḥ। prayujyāpṛcchya bharatānyathāsvānsvānyayurghṛhān ॥03-299-25॥
[इति उक्ते (iti ukte) - thus having been spoken; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; परम आशिषः (parama āśiṣaḥ) - the highest blessings; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - having bestowed; अपृच्छ्य (apṛcchya) - having taken leave of; भरतान् (bharatān) - the descendants of Bharata; यथा स्वान् स्वान् (yathā svān svān) - to their respective; अयुः (ayuḥ) - went; गृहान् (ghṛhān) - homes;]
(Thus having been spoken by Bhīmasena, the Brāhmaṇas, having bestowed the highest blessings and having taken leave of the Bharatas, went to their respective homes.)
When Bhīmasena had thus spoken, the Brāhmaṇas, after bestowing supreme blessings and taking leave of the Bharatas, went each to their own home. (03-299-25)
सर्वे वेदविदो मुख्या यतयो मुनयस्तथा। आशीरुक्त्वा यथान्यायं पुनर्दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥०३-२९९-२६॥
sarve vedavido mukhyā yatayo munayas tathā। āśīr uktvā yathā-nyāyaṃ punar-darśana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥03-299-26॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; मुख्याः (mukhyāḥ) - chief; यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; तथा (tathā) - likewise; आशीः (āśīḥ) - blessing; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having uttered; यथान्यायम् (yathā-nyāyam) - according to propriety; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः (darśana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring to see (again);]
(All knowers of the Veda, chief ascetics, sages likewise, having uttered blessings according to propriety, again desiring to see (him).)
All the foremost knowers of the Veda, ascetics, and sages, having offered blessings as appropriate, were wishing to see him again. (03-299-26)
सह धौम्येन विद्वांसस्तथा ते पञ्च पाण्डवाः। उत्थाय प्रययुर्वीराः कृष्णामादाय भारत ॥०३-२९९-२७॥
saha dhaumyena vidvāṁsastathā te pañca pāṇḍavāḥ। utthāya prayayurvīrāḥ kṛṣṇāmādāya bhārata॥03-299-27॥
[सह (saha) - together with; धौम्येन (dhaumyena) - with Dhaumya; विद्वांसः (vidvāṁsaḥ) - the learned ones; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; ते (te) - those; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen (standing up); प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - they went; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - the heroes; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Together with Dhaumya, the learned ones, so, those five Pāṇḍavas, having risen, the heroes went, having taken Kṛṣṇā, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the five Pāṇḍavas, those learned heroes, together with Dhaumya, rose up and departed, having taken Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) with them. (03-299-27)
क्रोशमात्रमतिक्रम्य तस्माद्देशान्निमित्ततः। श्वोभूते मनुजव्याघ्राश्छन्नवासार्थमुद्यताः ॥०३-२९९-२८॥
krośamātram atikramya tasmād deśān nimittataḥ। śvo bhūte manuja-vyāghrāḥ channa-vāsa-artham udyatāḥ ॥03-299-28॥
[क्रोशमात्रम् (krośamātram) - a measure of a krośa; (about 2 miles); अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having crossed; exceeding; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; from there; देशात् (deśāt) - from the region; from the place; निमित्ततः (nimittataḥ) - for a reason; because of a cause; श्वः (śvaḥ) - on the next day; tomorrow; भूते (bhūte) - having become; having happened; मनुजव्याघ्राः (manuja-vyāghrāḥ) - tiger among men; great men; छन्नवासार्थम् (channa-vāsa-artham) - for the purpose of concealed dwelling; for the sake of hiding; उद्यताः (udyatāḥ) - prepared; ready;]
(Having crossed the measure of a krośa, from that region for a reason; on the next day having come, the tigers among men, for the purpose of concealed dwelling, became ready.)
After having gone a krośa distance from that region for a specific reason, the heroes, on the following day, became prepared for hidden dwelling. (03-299-28)
पृथक्षास्त्रविदः सर्वे सर्वे मन्त्रविशारदाः। सन्धिविग्रहकालज्ञा मन्त्राय समुपाविशन् ॥०३-२९९-२९॥
pṛthak-śāstra-vidaḥ sarve sarve mantra-viśāradāḥ। sandhi-vigraha-kāla-jñā mantrāya samupāviśan ॥03-299-29॥
[पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; शास्त्रविदः (śāstra-vidaḥ) - knowers of treatises; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मन्त्रविशारदाः (mantra-viśāradāḥ) - experts in counsel; सन्धिविग्रहकालज्ञाः (sandhi-vigraha-kāla-jñāḥ) - knowers of the time for alliance and division; मन्त्राय (mantrāya) - for discussion/advice; समुपाविशन् (samupāviśan) - assembled closely;]
(Separately knowers of treatises, all, all experts in counsel, knowers of the time for alliance and division, for discussion assembled closely.)
All those who were individually (skilled as) knowers of treatises, all experienced in counsel, and experts in determining the time for alliance and division, assembled closely for consultation. (03-299-29)
