कथं विराटनगरे मम पूर्वपितामहाः। अज्ञातवासमुषिता दुर्योधनभयार्दिताः ॥०४-१-१॥
kathaṁ virāṭanagare mama pūrvapitāmahāḥ। ajñātavāsamuṣitā duryodhanabhayārdhitāḥ ॥04-1-1॥

तथा तु स वराँल्लब्ध्वा धर्माद्धर्मभृतां वरः। गत्वाश्रमं ब्राह्मणेभ्य आचख्यौ सर्वमेव तत् ॥०४-१-२॥
tathā tu sa varāṃ-labdhvā dharmād dharma-bhṛtāṃ varaḥ। gatvā āśramam brāhmaṇebhya ācakhyau sarvam eva tat॥04-1-2॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; वरान् (varān) - boons; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from Dharma; धर्मभृताम् (dharma-bhṛtām) - of the upholders of righteousness; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - to the hermitage; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - he told; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Thus but he, having obtained the boons from Dharma, the best of the upholders of righteousness, having gone to the hermitage, to the Brāhmaṇas, he told everything indeed that.)
Thus, he, the foremost among the upholders of righteousness, having obtained the boons from Dharma, went to the hermitage and told all of that to the Brāhmaṇas. (04-1-2)
कथयित्वा तु तत्सर्वं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो युधिष्ठिरः। अरणीसहितं तस्मै ब्राह्मणाय न्यवेदयत् ॥०४-१-३॥
kathayitvā tu tatsarvaṁ brāhmaṇebhyo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। araṇī-sahitaṁ tasmai brāhmaṇāya nyavedayat ॥04-1-3॥
[कथयित्वा (kathayitvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṁ) - all that; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अरणीसहितं (araṇī-sahitaṁ) - together with firesticks; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - gave;]
(Having spoken but all that to the Brāhmaṇas, Yudhiṣṭhira to him, to the Brāhmaṇa, together with firesticks, gave.)
But after stating all that to the Brāhmaṇas, Yudhiṣṭhira gave to that Brāhmaṇa the firesticks along with (everything else). (04-1-3)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा धर्मपुत्रो महामनाः। संनिवर्त्यानुजान्सर्वानिति होवाच भारत ॥०४-१-४॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā dharmaputro mahāmanāḥ. saṁnivartyānujānsarvāniti hovāca bhārata ॥04-1-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; राजा (rājā) - king; धर्मपुत्रः (dharmaputraḥ) - son of Dharma; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; संनिवर्त्य (saṁnivartya) - calling back; अनुजान् (anujān) - younger brothers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; इति (iti) - thus; होवाच (hovāca) - spoke; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then Yudhiṣṭhira, king, son of Dharma, great-minded, calling back all younger brothers, thus spoke, O Bhārata.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, the noble-minded king and son of Dharma, called back all his younger brothers and spoke thus, O Bhārata. (04-1-4)
द्वादशेमानि वर्षाणि राष्ट्राद्विप्रोषिता वयम्। त्रयोदशोऽयं सम्प्राप्तः कृच्छ्रः परमदुर्वसः ॥०४-१-५॥
dvādaśemāni varṣāṇi rāṣṭrād viproṣitā vayam। trayodaśo'yaṃ samprāptaḥ kṛcchraḥ paramadurvasaḥ॥04-1-5॥
[द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; इमानि (imāni) - these; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; विप्रोषिता (viproṣitā) - expelled; वयम् (vayam) - we; त्रयोदशः (trayodaśaḥ) - thirteenth; अयम् (ayam) - this; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - has arrived; कृच्छ्रः (kṛcchraḥ) - difficult period; परमदुर्वसः (paramadurvasaḥ) - extremely hard to endure;]
(Twelve these years from the kingdom expelled we; thirteenth this has arrived difficult period extremely hard to endure.)
We have been exiled from the kingdom for these twelve years; now, the thirteenth—an extremely difficult and hard-to-endure period—has arrived. (04-1-5)
स साधु कौन्तेय इतो वासमर्जुन रोचय। यत्रेमा वसतीः सर्वा वसेमाविदिताः परैः ॥०४-१-६॥
sa sādhu kaunteya ito vāsam arjuna rocaya। yatre imā vasatīḥ sarvā vasema aviditāḥ paraiḥ॥ 04-1-6॥
[स (sa) - he; साधु (sādhu) - well; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; इतो (ito) - here; वासम् (vāsam) - dwelling; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; रोचय (rocaya) - choose; यत्र (yatra) - where; इमा (imā) - these; वसतीः (vasatīḥ) - abodes; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; वसेम (vasema) - we may dwell; अविदिताः (aviditāḥ) - unnoticed; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(He, well, O son of Kunti, here dwelling Arjuna choose. Where these abodes all we may dwell unnoticed by others.)
Therefore, O son of Kunti, Arjuna, choose a dwelling here where we all may live in these abodes, unnoticed by others. (04-1-6)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

तस्यैव वरदानेन धर्मस्य मनुजाधिप। अज्ञाता विचरिष्यामो नराणां भरतर्षभ ॥०४-१-७॥
tasyaiva varadānena dharmasya manujādhipa। ajñātā vicariṣyāmo narāṇāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥04-1-7॥
[तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of him only; specifically; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the boon; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma (righteousness); मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men; अज्ञाता (ajñātā) - unknown; unidentified; विचरिष्यामो (vicariṣyāmo) - we shall wander; नराणां (narāṇāṃ) - among men; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Of him only, by the boon, of dharma, O lord of men, unknown, we shall wander among men, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O lord of men, by the very boon of Dharma, we shall go about unknown among men, O bull among the Bharatas. (04-1-7)
किं तु वासाय राष्ट्राणि कीर्तयिष्यामि कानिचित्। रमणीयानि गुप्तानि तेषां किञ्चित्स्म रोचय ॥०४-१-८॥
kiṁ tu vāsāya rāṣṭrāṇi kīrtayiṣyāmi kānicit। ramaṇīyāni guptāni teṣāṁ kiñcitsma rocaya ॥04-1-8॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - indeed; वासाय (vāsāya) - for dwelling; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - countries; कीर्तयिष्यामि (kīrtayiṣyāmi) - I shall recount; कानिचित् (kānicit) - some; रमणीयानि (ramaṇīyāni) - pleasing; गुप्तानि (guptāni) - protected; तेषां (teṣāṁ) - among those; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; स्म (sma) - indeed; रोचय (rocaya) - select;]
(What indeed for dwelling countries I shall recount some, pleasing protected among those a little indeed select.)
But for dwelling, I shall recount some countries; among those, choose a few which are pleasing and protected. (04-1-8)
सन्ति रम्या जनपदा बह्वन्नाः परितः कुरून्। पाञ्चालाश्चेदिमत्स्याश्च शूरसेनाः पटच्चराः ॥ दशार्णा नवराष्ट्रं च मल्लाः शाल्वा युगन्धराः ॥०४-१-९॥
santi ramyā janapadā bahvannāḥ paritaḥ kurūn। pāñcālāś cedimatsyāś ca śūrasenāḥ paṭaccarāḥ॥ daśārṇā navarāṣṭraṃ ca mallāḥ śālvā yugandharāḥ॥04-1-9॥
[सन्ति (santi) - are; exist; रम्या (ramyā) - pleasant; beautiful; जनपदा (janapadā) - regions; countries; बह्वन्नाः (bahvannāḥ) - rich in food; abundant in food; परितः (paritaḥ) - around; all about; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; Kuru land; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pañcālas; च (ca) - and; चेदिमत्स्याः (cedimatsyāḥ) - the Cedis and Matsyas; च (ca) - and; शूरसेनाः (śūrasenāḥ) - the Śūrasenas; पटच्चराः (paṭaccarāḥ) - the Paṭaccaras; दशार्णाः (daśārṇāḥ) - the Daśārṇas; नवराष्ट्रं (navarāṣṭraṃ) - the Navas of the region; Navarastra; च (ca) - and; मल्लाः (mallāḥ) - the Mallas; शाल्वाः (śālvāḥ) - the Śālvas; युगन्धराः (yugandharāḥ) - the Yugandharas;]
(There are pleasant regions rich in food around the Kurus: the Pañcālas, the Cedi-Matsyas, the Śūrasenas, the Paṭaccaras, the Daśārṇas, the Nava-rashtra, and the Mallas, the Śālvas, the Yugandharas.)
There are beautiful and fertile regions around the Kuru land: the Pañcālas, the Cedis and Matsyas, the Śūrasenas, the Paṭaccaras, the Daśārṇas, the Nava-rashtra, the Mallas, the Śālvas, and the Yugandharas. (04-1-9)
एतेषां कतमो राजन्निवासस्तव रोचते। वत्स्यामो यत्र राजेन्द्र संवत्सरमिमं वयम् ॥०४-१-१०॥
eteṣāṃ katamo rājan nivāsaḥ tava rocate । vatsyāmaḥ yatra rāje-ndra saṃvatsaram imaṃ vayam ॥04-1-10॥
[एतेषां (eteṣām) - of these; कतमो (katamaḥ) - which (one); राजन् (rājan) - O king; निवासः (nivāsaḥ) - dwelling; तव (tava) - to you; रोचते (rocate) - is pleasing; वत्स्यामः (vatsyāmaḥ) - we shall dwell; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O lord of kings; संवत्सरम् (saṃvatsaram) - year; इमम् (imam) - this; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Of these, which dwelling, O king, is pleasing to you? Where we shall dwell, O lord of kings, this year we (all).)
O king, which of these residences do you prefer? Where shall we stay for this year, O lord of kings? (04-1-10)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा स भगवान्प्रभुः। अब्रवीत्सर्वभूतेशस्तत्तथा न तदन्यथा ॥०४-१-११॥
evam etan mahābāho yathā sa bhagavān prabhuḥ। abravīt sarvabhūteśas tat tathā na tad anyathā ॥04-1-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; यथा (yathā) - as; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the glorious one; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सर्वभूतेशः (sarvabhūteśaḥ) - the lord of all beings; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Thus this, O mighty-armed one, as he, the glorious lord, spoke, the lord of all beings; that thus, not that otherwise.)
O mighty-armed one, it is just as the glorious lord, the lord of all beings, has spoken; it is so and not otherwise. (04-1-11)
अवश्यं त्वेव वासार्थं रमणीयं शिवं सुखम्। संमन्त्र्य सहितैः सर्वैर्द्रष्टव्यमकुतोभयम् ॥०४-१-१२॥
avaśyaṁ tveva vāsārthaṁ ramaṇīyaṁ śivaṁ sukham। sanmantrya sahitaiḥ sarvairdraṣṭavyamakutobhayam ॥04-1-12॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; definitely; तु (tu) - but; however; एव (eva) - indeed; only; वासार्थं (vāsārtham) - for the purpose of dwelling; for living; रमणीयं (ramaṇīyam) - beautiful; delightful; शिवं (śivam) - auspicious; pleasant; सुखम् (sukham) - comfortable; happiness; संमन्त्र्य (sanmantrya) - after consulting; having taken counsel; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - with companions; together with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; by all; द्रष्टव्यम् (draṣṭavyam) - (it) should be seen; should be considered; अकुतोभयम् (akutobhayam) - free from fear (from any quarter); safe from all sides;]
(Certainly but indeed for dwelling purpose, beautiful, auspicious, comfortable; having consulted with all companions, (it) should be seen (whether it is) free from fear from any quarter.)
Certainly, for the purpose of dwelling, a place that is beautiful, auspicious, and comfortable should be considered—having taken counsel with all companions—whether it is free from danger from any direction. (04-1-12)
मत्स्यो विराटो बलवानभिरक्षेत्स पाण्डवान्। धर्मशीलो वदान्यश्च वृद्धश्च सुमहाधनः ॥०४-१-१३॥
matsyo virāṭo balavān abhirakṣet sa pāṇḍavān। dharmaśīlo vadānyaś ca vṛddhaś ca sumahādhanaḥ॥04-1-13॥
[मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - king of the Matsyas; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virāṭa; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; अभिरक्षेत् (abhirakṣet) - should protect; सः (saḥ) - he; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; धर्मशीलः (dharmaśīlaḥ) - of virtuous disposition; वदान्यः (vadānyaḥ) - generous; च (ca) - and; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - elder; च (ca) - and; सुमहाधनः (sumahādhanaḥ) - having great wealth;]
(The Matsya king, Virāṭa, strong, should protect the Pāṇḍavas; of virtuous disposition and generous and elder and possessing great wealth.)
Virāṭa, the king of the Matsyas—who is strong, virtuous, generous, elderly, and very wealthy—should protect the Pāṇḍavas. (04-1-13)
विराटनगरे तात संवत्सरमिमं वयम्। कुर्वन्तस्तस्य कर्माणि विहरिष्याम भारत ॥०४-१-१४॥
virāṭanagare tāta saṃvatsaram imaṃ vayam | kurvantas tasya karmāṇi vihariṣyāma bhārata ॥04-1-14॥
[विराटनगरे (virāṭanagare) - in the city of Virāta; तात (tāta) - O dear one; संवत्सरम् (saṃvatsaram) - a year; इमम् (imam) - this; वयम् (vayam) - we; कुर्वन्तः (kurvantaḥ) - doing; तस्य (tasya) - his; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - tasks; विहरिष्याम (vihariṣyāma) - will dwell; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(In the city of Virāta, O dear one, this year we, doing his tasks, will dwell, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, we will spend this year in the city of Virāta performing his tasks, dear one. (04-1-14)
यानि यानि च कर्माणि तस्य शक्ष्यामहे वयम्। कर्तुं यो यत्स तत्कर्म ब्रवीतु कुरुनन्दनाः ॥०४-१-१५॥
yāni yāni ca karmāṇi tasya śakṣyāmahe vayam। kartuṃ yo yats tatkarma bravītu kurunandanāḥ ॥04-1-15॥
[यानि यानि (yāni yāni) - whatever; whatever; च (ca) - and; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; तस्य (tasya) - his; शक्ष्यामहे (śakṣyāmahe) - we shall be able; वयम् (vayam) - we; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; यः (yaḥ) - who; यत् (yat) - which; सत् (sat) - that; तत्कर्म (tatkarma) - that deed; ब्रवीतु (bravītu) - let (him) tell; कुरुनन्दनाः (kurunandanāḥ) - O descendants of Kuru;]
(Whatever, whatever and actions of him we shall be able (to do), we—to do, who, which, that, that deed let tell, O descendants of Kuru.)
O descendants of Kuru, whichever actions of his we shall be able to perform, let him who knows say which those are, and let him state that task. (04-1-15)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

नरदेव कथं कर्म राष्ट्रे तस्य करिष्यसि। विराटनृपतेः साधो रंस्यसे केन कर्मणा ॥०४-१-१६॥
naradeva kathaṃ karma rāṣṭre tasya kariṣyasi। virāṭanṛpateḥ sādho raṃsyase kena karmaṇā॥04-1-16॥
[नरदेव (naradeva) - O king; (nara—man; deva—divine, king); कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कर्म (karma) - action; राष्ट्रे (rāṣṭre) - in the kingdom; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; विराटनृपतेः (virāṭanṛpateḥ) - of King Virata; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; रंस्यसे (raṃsyase) - you will enjoy; केन (kena) - by what; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - action;]
(O king, how action in the kingdom of him will you perform? Of King Virata, O noble one, you will enjoy by what action?)
O king, how will you act in his kingdom? O noble one, by what work will you enjoy yourself in King Virata's realm? (04-1-16)
मृदुर्वदान्यो ह्रीमांश्च धार्मिकः सत्यविक्रमः। राजंस्त्वमापदा क्लिष्टः किं करिष्यसि पाण्डव ॥०४-१-१७॥
mṛdurvadānyo hrīmāṁśca dhārmikaḥ satyavikramaḥ। rājaṁstvāmāpadā kliṣṭaḥ kiṁ kariṣyasi pāṇḍava॥04-1-17॥
[मृदु: (mṛduḥ) - gentle; वदान्य: (vadānyaḥ) - generous; ह्रीमांश्च (hrīmāṁś ca) - modest and; धार्मिक: (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; सत्यविक्रम: (satyavikramaḥ) - truly valiant; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आपदा (āpadā) - by calamity; क्लिष्ट: (kliṣṭaḥ) - afflicted; किं (kiṁ) - what; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - will you do; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(Gentle, generous, modest and righteous, truly valiant, O king, you afflicted by calamity—what will you do, O Pāṇḍava?)
O king, gentle, generous, modest, righteous, and truly valiant, afflicted by calamity, what will you do, O Pāṇḍava? (04-1-17)
न दुःखमुचितं किञ्चिद्राजन्वेद यथा जनः। स इमामापदं प्राप्य कथं घोरां तरिष्यसि ॥०४-१-१८॥
na duḥkham ucitaṃ kiñcid rājan veda yathā janaḥ। sa imām āpadaṃ prāpya kathaṃ ghorāṃ tariṣyasi ॥04-1-18॥
[न (na) - not; दुःखमुचितं (duḥkham-ucitaṃ) - appropriate to suffering; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वेद (veda) - knows; यथा (yathā) - as; जनः (janaḥ) - person; सः (saḥ) - he; इमाम् (imām) - this; आपदं (āpadaṃ) - affliction; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having experienced; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; घोरां (ghorāṃ) - terrible; तरिष्यसि (tariṣyasi) - will you cross (over);]
(Not anything appropriate to suffering, O king, knows as a person. He, having experienced this affliction, how (will) terrible (one) will you cross (over).)
O king, no person knows how to endure anything appropriate to suffering. Having come into this terrible affliction, how will you cross over it? (04-1-18)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

शृणुध्वं यत्करिष्यामि कर्म वै कुरुनन्दनाः। विराटमनुसम्प्राप्य राजानं पुरुषर्षभम् ॥०४-१-१९॥
śṛṇudhvaṃ yat kariṣyāmi karma vai kurunandanāḥ। virāṭam anusamprāpya rājānaṃ puruṣarṣabham॥04-1-19॥
[शृणुध्वं (śṛṇudhvaṃ) - hear; (you all) यत् (yat) - what; (that which) करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; कर्म (karma) - action; वै (vai) - indeed; कुरुनन्दनाः (kurunandanāḥ) - descendants of Kuru; (O Kurus) विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; (king's name) अनुसम्प्राप्य (anusamprāpya) - having approached; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; पुरुषर्षभम् (puruṣarṣabham) - bull among men; (excellent man);]
(Hear, what I shall do, action indeed, O descendants of Kuru; having approached Virāṭa, the king, the bull among men.)
Hear, O descendants of Kuru, what action I shall indeed undertake—having approached King Virāṭa, the foremost among men. (04-1-19)
सभास्तारो भविष्यामि तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः। कङ्को नाम द्विजो भूत्वा मताक्षः प्रियदेविता ॥०४-१-२०॥
sabhāstāro bhaviṣyāmi tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ। kaṅko nāma dvijo bhūtvā matākṣaḥ priyadevitā ॥04-1-20॥
[सभास्तारः (sabhāstāraḥ) - courtier; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; कङ्कः (kaṅkaḥ) - Kaṅka; नाम (nāma) - by name; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मताक्षः (matākṣaḥ) - dice-expert; प्रियदेविता (priyadevitā) - favorite;]
(I shall become a courtier of that king, the great-souled one. Having become a twice-born named Kaṅka, I, dice-expert, (shall be) the favorite.)
I will serve as a courtier of that great-souled king. Assuming the name Kaṅka as a twice-born and dice-expert, I shall become his favorite. (04-1-20)
वैडूर्यान्काञ्चनान्दान्तान्फलैर्ज्योतीरसैः सह। कृष्णाक्षाँल्लोहिताक्षांश्च निर्वर्त्स्यामि मनोरमान् ॥०४-१-२१॥
vaiḍūryāṁ-kāñcanān-dāntān phalaiḥ jyotī-rasaḥ saha। kṛṣṇākṣāṁ-l-lohitākṣāṁś-ca nirvartsyāmi manoramān ॥04-1-21॥
[वैडूर्यान् (vaiḍūryān) - cat's eye gems; काञ्चनान् (kāñcanān) - golden; दान्तान् (dāntān) - ivory; फलैः (phalaiḥ) - with fruits; ज्योतीरसैः (jyotīrasaiḥ) - with shining sapphires; सह (saha) - together with; कृष्णाक्षान् (kṛṣṇākṣān) - black-eyed; लोहिताक्षान् (lohitākṣān) - red-eyed; च (ca) - and; निर्वर्त्स्यामि (nirvartsyāmi) - I will construct; मनोरमान् (manoramān) - beautiful ones;]
(Cat's eye gems, golden, ivory, with fruits, with shining sapphires together; black-eyed, and red-eyed I will construct beautiful ones.)
I will construct beautiful (trees/statues/etc.) made of cat's eye gems, gold, ivory, fruits, and resplendent sapphires, as well as beautiful ones with black or red eyes. (04-1-21)
आसं युधिष्ठिरस्याहं पुरा प्राणसमः सखा। इति वक्ष्यामि राजानं यदि मामनुयोक्ष्यते ॥०४-१-२२॥
āsaṁ yudhiṣṭhirasya ahaṁ purā prāṇasamaḥ sakhā। iti vakṣyāmi rājānam yadi mām anuyokṣyate॥04-1-22॥
[आसं (āsaṁ) - I was; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्राणसमः (prāṇasamaḥ) - equal as (his) life; सखा (sakhā) - friend; इति (iti) - thus; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; अनुयोक्ष्यते (anuyokṣyate) - asks;]
(I was of Yudhiṣṭhira I formerly (was) equal as life friend thus I will say to the king if me asks.)
If the king asks me, I will say this: "Formerly, I was a friend equal to life for Yudhiṣṭhira." (04-1-22)
इत्येतद्वो मयाख्यातं विहरिष्याम्यहं यथा। वृकोदर विराटे त्वं रंस्यसे केन कर्मणा ॥०४-१-२३॥
ity etad vo mayā ākhyātaṃ vihariṣyāmi ahaṃ yathā। vṛkodara virāṭe tvaṃ raṃsyase kena karmaṇā॥04-1-23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etad) - this; वः (vo) - to you (plural); मया (mayā) - by me; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; विहरिष्यामि (vihariṣyāmi) - I will act/move/live; अहम् (aham) - I; यथा (yathā) - as/how; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); विराटे (virāṭe) - in Virāṭa's (kingdom); त्वम् (tvam) - you; रंस्यसे (raṃsyase) - will enjoy; केन (kena) - by which; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by duty/action;]
(Thus, this to you by me has been told, I will act as how; Vṛkodara, in Virāṭa's (kingdom) you will enjoy by which duty.)
Thus, I have told this to you; I will act as indicated. Bhīma, in the kingdom of Virāṭa, by what duty will you be engaged? (04-1-23)
