पौरोगवो ब्रुवाणोऽहं बल्लवो नाम नामतः। उपस्थास्यामि राजानं विराटमिति मे मतिः ॥०४-२-१॥
pauro-ga-vo bruvāṇo'haṃ ballavo nāma nāmataḥ। upasthāsyāmi rājānaṃ virāṭam iti me matiḥ॥04-2-1॥

(Chief of cattle keepers speaking, I, named herdsman by name, will approach king Virata, thus my thought.)
Saying as the chief of cattle keepers, I, called by the name herdsman, will approach king Virata—this is my resolve. (04-2-1)
सूपानस्य करिष्यामि कुशलोऽस्मि महानसे। कृतपूर्वाणि यैरस्य व्यञ्जनानि सुशिक्षितैः ॥ तानप्यभिभविष्यामि प्रीतिं सञ्जनयन्नहम् ॥०४-२-२॥
sūpānasya kariṣyāmi kuśalo'smi mahānase। kṛtapūrvāṇi yairasya vyañjanāni suśikṣitaiḥ ॥ tānapyabhibhaviṣyāmi prītiṃ sañjanayannaham ॥04-2-2॥
[सूपानस्य (sūpānasya) - of soup-making; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; महानसे (mahānase) - in the kitchen; कृतपूर्वाणि (kṛtapūrvāṇi) - previously made; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; अस्य (asya) - of this; व्यञ्जनानि (vyañjanāni) - dishes; सुशिक्षितैः (suśikṣitaiḥ) - well trained (people); तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also; अभिभविष्यामि (abhibhaviṣyāmi) - I will surpass; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; सञ्जनयन् (sañjanayan) - creating; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Of soup-making I shall do, skilled I am in the kitchen. Previously made by which of this dishes well trained (people); them also I will surpass, creating delight, I.)
I shall prepare soups; I am skilled in the kitchen. The dishes previously made by well-trained cooks—I will also surpass them, creating delight. (04-2-2)
आहरिष्यामि दारूणां निचयान्महतोऽपि च। तत्प्रेक्ष्य विपुलं कर्म राजा प्रीतो भविष्यति ॥०४-२-३॥
āhariṣyāmi dāruṇāṃ nicayān mahato'pi ca। tat prekṣya vipulaṃ karma rājā prīto bhaviṣyati॥04-2-3॥
[आहरिष्यामि (āhariṣyāmi) - I shall bring; दारूणां (dāruṇāṃ) - of wood; निचयान् (nicayān) - heaps; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - vast; कर्म (karma) - task; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(I shall bring even great heaps of wood and seeing that vast task the king will become pleased.)
I will bring even large heaps of wood; seeing that substantial work, the king will be pleased. (04-2-3)
द्विपा वा बलिनो राजन्वृषभा वा महाबलाः। विनिग्राह्या यदि मया निग्रहीष्यामि तानपि ॥०४-२-४॥
dvipā vā balino rājan vṛṣabhā vā mahābalāḥ। vinigrāhyā yadi mayā nigrahīṣyāmi tān api॥04-2-4॥
[द्विपाः (dvipāḥ) - elephants; वा (vā) - or; बलिनः (balinaḥ) - strong ones; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वृषभाः (vṛṣabhāḥ) - bulls; वा (vā) - or; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - possessing great strength; विनिग्राह्याः (vinigrāhyāḥ) - who are to be subdued; यदि (yadi) - if; मया (mayā) - by me; निग्रहीष्यामि (nigrahīṣyāmi) - I will subdue; तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also;]
(Elephants or strong ones, O king, or bulls possessing great strength—if they are to be subdued by me, I will subdue even them.)
O king, whether they are elephants, the strong, or mighty bulls—if it is necessary for me to subdue them, I will subdue them as well. (04-2-4)
ये च केचिन्नियोत्स्यन्ति समाजेषु नियोधकाः। तानहं निहनिष्यामि प्रीतिं तस्य विवर्धयन् ॥०४-२-५॥
ye ca kecin niyotsyanti samājeṣu niyodhakāḥ। tān ahaṃ nihaniṣyāmi prītiṃ tasya vivardhayan॥04-2-5॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; केचिन् (kecin) - some; नियोत्स्यन्ति (niyotsyanti) - will instigate; समाजेषु (samājeṣu) - in assemblies; नियोधकाः (niyodhakāḥ) - instigators; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; निहनिष्यामि (nihaniṣyāmi) - shall kill; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; तस्य (tasya) - his; विवर्धयन् (vivardhayan) - increasing;]
(Who and some will instigate in assemblies, instigators, them I shall kill, delight his increasing.)
And whoever among the instigators may stir up trouble in assemblies, I will kill those, increasing his delight. (04-2-5)
न त्वेतान्युध्यमानान्वै हनिष्यामि कथञ्चन। तथैतान्पातयिष्यामि यथा यास्यन्ति न क्षयम् ॥०४-२-६॥
na tv etān yudhyamānān vai haniṣyāmi kathaṃcana। tathā etān pātayiṣyāmi yathā yāsyanti na kṣayam ॥04-2-6॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एतान् (etān) - these; युध्यमानान् (yudhyamānān) - fighting; वै (vai) - indeed; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; तथा (tathā) - thus; एतान् (etān) - these; पातयिष्यामि (pātayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to fall; यथा (yathā) - so that; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - they will go; न (na) - not; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - to destruction;]
(Not but these fighting ones indeed I will kill in any way. Thus these I will cause to fall so that they will not go to destruction.)
But I will not kill these warriors in any way; rather, I will cause them to fall in such a way that they do not perish. (04-2-6)
आरालिको गोविकर्ता सूपकर्ता नियोधकः। आसं युधिष्ठिरस्याहमिति वक्ष्यामि पृच्छतः ॥०४-२-७॥
ārāliko govikartā sūpakartā niyodhakaḥ। āsaṃ yudhiṣṭhirasyāhamiti vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ॥04-2-7॥
[आरालिकः (ārālikaḥ) - keeper of the cow enclosure; गोविकर्ता (govikartā) - one who tends cows; सूपकर्ता (sūpakartā) - one who prepares food; नियोधकः (niyodhakaḥ) - one who assigns work; आसम् (āsaṃ) - I was; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - to (one who is) asking;]
(The keeper of the cow enclosure, the one who tends cows, the one who prepares food, the one who assigns work — I was (these) of Yudhiṣṭhira; thus I will say to the one who is asking.)
I will say this to the one asking: "I was Yudhiṣṭhira's cowherd, cook, and task-assigner." (04-2-7)
आत्मानमात्मना रक्षंश्चरिष्यामि विशां पते। इत्येतत्प्रतिजानामि विहरिष्याम्यहं यथा ॥०४-२-८॥
ātmānam ātmanā rakṣan cariṣyāmi viśāṃ pate। ity etat pratijānāmi vihariṣyāmi ahaṃ yathā ॥04-2-8॥
[आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - with/by (my) self; रक्षन् (rakṣan) - protecting; चरीष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall roam; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रतिजानामि (pratijānāmi) - I promise; विहरिष्यामि (vihariṣyāmi) - I shall wander; अहम् (aham) - I; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Self with self protecting I shall roam, O lord of the people. Thus this I promise, I shall wander as I.)
O lord of the people, I shall protect myself by myself as I roam. Thus I promise: I will wander in this manner. (04-2-8)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
यमग्निर्ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा समागच्छन्नृणां वरम्। दिधक्षुः खाण्डवं दावं दाशार्हसहितं पुरा ॥०४-२-९॥
yam agnir brāhmaṇo bhūtvā samāgacchan nṛṇāṃ varam। didhakṣuḥ khāṇḍavaṃ dāvaṃ dāśārha-sahitaṃ purā ॥04-2-9॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - as a Brāhmaṇa; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; समागच्छन् (samāgacchan) - having approached; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; वरम् (varam) - the best; दिधक्षुः (didhakṣuḥ) - desiring to burn; खाण्डवम् (khāṇḍavam) - Khāṇḍava (forest); दावम् (dāvam) - forest; दाशार्हसहितम् (dāśārha-sahitam) - together with Dāśārha; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Whom Agni, having become a Brāhmaṇa, having approached the best of men, desiring to burn the Khāṇḍava forest together with Dāśārha, formerly.)
Agni, having assumed the form of a Brāhmaṇa, once approached the best of men, wishing to burn the Khāṇḍava forest together with Dāśārha. (04-2-9)
महाबलं महाबाहुमजितं कुरुनन्दनम्। सोऽयं किं कर्म कौन्तेयः करिष्यति धनञ्जयः ॥०४-२-१०॥
mahābalaṃ mahābāhum ajitaṃ kurunandanam। so'yaṃ kiṃ karma kaunteyaḥ kariṣyati dhanañjayaḥ॥04-2-10॥
[महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great strength; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - having great arms; अजितम् (ajitam) - unconquered; कुरुनन्दनम् (kurunandanam) - delight of the Kurus; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; किम् (kim) - what; कर्म (karma) - action; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya;]
(Of great strength, having great arms, unconquered, delight of the Kurus—he, this (person), what action the son of Kunti, will do Dhananjaya? (04-2-10))
What action will Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, who is of great strength, great arms, unconquered, and the delight of the Kurus, perform? (04-2-10)
योऽयमासाद्य तं दावं तर्पयामास पावकम्। विजित्यैकरथेनेन्द्रं हत्वा पन्नगराक्षसान् ॥ श्रेष्ठः प्रतियुधां नाम सोऽर्जुनः किं करिष्यति ॥०४-२-११॥
yo'ayam-āsādya taṁ dāvaṁ tarpayāmāsa pāvakam। vijityaikarathenendraṁ hatvā pannagarākṣasān॥ śreṣṭhaḥ pratiyudhāṁ nāma so'rjunaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati॥04-2-11॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तम् (tam) - that; दावम् (dāvam) - forest fire; तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - satisfied; पावकम् (pāvakam) - the fire; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; एकरथेन (ekarathena) - with a single chariot; इन्द्रम् (indram) - Indra; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; पन्नगराक्षसान् (pannagarākṣasān) - serpent-demons; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; प्रियतुधाम् (pratiyudhām) - of the fighters; नाम (nāma) - named; सः (saḥ) - he; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; किम् (kim) - what; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Who, this having reached that forest fire, satisfied the fire. Having conquered Indra with a single chariot, having slain serpent-demons. The best of fighters, named he Arjuna, what will do? (04-2-11))
He who, having reached that forest fire, satisfied the fire, having conquered Indra with a single chariot and slain the serpent-demons, that best of fighters named Arjuna—what could he not do? (04-2-11)
सूर्यः प्रतपतां श्रेष्ठो द्विपदां ब्राह्मणो वरः। आशीविषश्च सर्पाणामग्निस्तेजस्विनां वरः ॥०४-२-१२॥
sūryaḥ pratapatāṃ śreṣṭho dvipadāṃ brāhmaṇo varaḥ| āśīviṣaśca sarpāṇām agnis tejasvināṃ varaḥ ॥04-2-12॥
[सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; प्रतपतां (pratapatām) - of those who shine; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent; द्विपदां (dvipadām) - of the bipeds; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; आशीविषः (āśīviṣaḥ) - the venomous serpent; च (ca) - and; सर्पाणाम् (sarpāṇām) - of snakes; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; तेजस्विनां (tejasvinām) - of the powerful; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(The sun of those who shine is the most excellent; of the bipeds, the brāhmaṇa is the best; the venomous serpent, among snakes; fire is the best among the powerful.)
The sun is the foremost among those who shine; among bipeds, the brāhmaṇa is the best; among snakes, the venomous serpent; and among the powerful, fire is the best. (04-2-12)
आयुधानां वरो वर्जः ककुद्मी च गवां वरः। ह्रदानामुदधिः श्रेष्ठः पर्जन्यो वर्षतां वरः ॥०४-२-१३॥
āyudhānāṃ varo varjaḥ kakudmī ca gavāṃ varaḥ। hradānām udadhiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ parjanyo varṣatāṃ varaḥ॥04-2-13॥
[आयुधानाम् (āyudhānām) - of weapons; वरः (varaḥ) - best; वर्जः (varjaḥ) - the thunderbolt; ककुद्मी (kakudmī) - Kakudmī; च (ca) - and; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; वरः (varaḥ) - best; ह्रदानाम् (hradānām) - of lakes; उदधिः (udadhiḥ) - the ocean; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - most excellent; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - the rain-cloud; वर्षताम् (varṣatām) - of those that pour (rain); वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(Of weapons, best is the thunderbolt; Kakudmī is also the best of cows; of lakes, the ocean is most excellent; of those that pour (rain), the rain-cloud is best.)
Among weapons, the thunderbolt is the best; among cows, Kakudmī is the best; among lakes, the ocean is the most excellent; among those that shower rain, the rain-cloud is the best. (04-2-13)
धृतराष्ट्रश्च नागानां हस्तिष्वैरावतो वरः। पुत्रः प्रियाणामधिको भार्या च सुहृदां वरा ॥०४-२-१४॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraś ca nāgānāṃ hastiṣvairāvato varaḥ। putraḥ priyāṇām adhiko bhāryā ca suhṛdāṃ varā ॥04-2-14॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of elephants; हस्तिषु (hastiṣu) - among elephants; ऐरावतः (airāvataḥ) - Airavata; वरः (varaḥ) - most excellent; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; प्रियाणाम् (priyāṇām) - of the beloved ones; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - superior; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; च (ca) - and; सुघृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; वरा (varā) - most excellent;]
(Dhritarashtra and among elephants Airavata is most excellent; son is superior to the beloved ones, and wife is most excellent of friends.)
Dhritarashtra is best among men as Airavata is among elephants; a son surpasses all beloved ones, and a wife is the best among friends. (04-2-14)
यथैतानि विशिष्टानि जात्यां जात्यां वृकोदर। एवं युवा गुडाकेशः श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥०४-२-१५॥
yathaitāni viśiṣṭāni jātyāṁ jātyāṁ vṛkodara. evaṁ yuvā guḍākeśaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām ॥04-2-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as;, एतानि (etāni) - these;, विशिष्टानि (viśiṣṭāni) - distinguished;, जात्यां (jātyām) - in kind;, जात्यां (jātyām) - in kind;, वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara;, एवं (evaṁ) - thus;, युवा (yuvā) - youth;, गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa;, श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - best;, सर्व (sarva) - all;, धनुष्मताम् (dhanuṣmatām) - of bowmen;,;]
(Just as these distinguished ones in each kind, O Vṛkodara, thus the youth Guḍākeśa is the best of all bowmen.)
Just as among all kinds there are distinguished ones, O Vṛkodara, so too the young Guḍākeśa is the best among all bowmen. (04-2-15)
सोऽयमिन्द्रादनवरो वासुदेवाच्च भारत। गाण्डीवधन्वा श्वेताश्वो बीभत्सुः किं करिष्यति ॥०४-२-१६॥
so'ayam indrād anavaraḥ vāsudevāc ca bhārata। gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvaḥ bībhatsuḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ॥04-2-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - from Indra; अनवरः (anavaraḥ) - not inferior; वासुदेवात् (vāsudevāt) - from Vāsudeva; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गाण्डीवधन्वा (gāṇḍīvadhanvā) - wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow; श्वेताश्वः (śvetāśvaḥ) - whose horses are white; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu; किम् (kim) - what; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(He, this one, not inferior to Indra and to Vāsudeva, O Bhārata, the Gāṇḍīva-bow wielder, the one with white horses, Bībhatsu—what will he do?)
He, O Bhārata, who is not inferior to Indra or to Vāsudeva—the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, he whose horses are white, Bībhatsu—what will he do? (04-2-16)
उषित्वा पञ्च वर्षाणि सहस्राक्षस्य वेश्मनि। दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यवाप्तानि देवरूपेण भास्वता ॥०४-२-१७॥
uṣitvā pañca varṣāṇi sahasrākṣasya veśmani। divyāny astrāṇy avāptāni devarūpeṇa bhāsvatā॥04-2-17॥
[उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having dwelled; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; सहस्राक्षस्य (sahasrākṣasya) - of Sahasrākṣa (Indra); वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in the abode; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; अवाप्तानि (avāptāni) - were obtained; देवरूपेण (devarūpeṇa) - with a god-like form; भास्वता (bhāsvatā) - by the shining (one/person);]
(Having dwelled five years in Sahasrākṣa's abode, the divine weapons were obtained by the shining one with a god-like form.)
After residing for five years in the abode of Sahasrākṣa (Indra), the shining one, having a god-like form, obtained the divine weapons. (04-2-17)
यं मन्ये द्वादशं रुद्रमादित्यानां त्रयोदशम्। यस्य बाहू समौ दीर्घौ ज्याघातकठिनत्वचौ ॥ दक्षिणे चैव सव्ये च गवामिव वहः कृतः ॥०४-२-१८॥
yaṁ manye dvādaśaṁ rudram ādityānāṁ trayodaśam । yasya bāhū samau dīrghau jyāghāta-kaṭhinatvacau ॥ dakṣiṇe ca eva savye ca gavām iva vahaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥04-2-18॥
[यं (yaṁ) - whom; मnye (manye) - I think; द्वादशं (dvādaśam) - the twelfth; रुद्रमादित्यानां (rudram-ādityānāṁ) - of the Rudras and Ādityas; त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - the thirteenth; यस्स्य (yasya) - whose; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; समौ (samau) - both; दीर्घौ (dīrghau) - long; ज्याघातकठिनत्वचौ (jyāghāta-kaṭhina-tvacau) - with skin hardened by the impact of the bowstring; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - at the right; चैव (ca eva) - and also; सव्ये (savye) - on the left; च (ca) - and; गवामिव (gavām iva) - like (the shoulders) of cows; वहः (vahaḥ) - burden; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - is made (formed);]
(Whom I think (to be) the twelfth among the Rudras and the thirteenth among the Ādityas; whose two arms are long, with skin hardened by the impact of the bowstring; on the right and even on the left, and like the burden of cows, (his shoulders) are made.)
I consider him the twelfth among the Rudras and the thirteenth among the Ādityas; whose two arms are long and have skin hardened by striking against the bowstring, and whose shoulders, both right and left, are formed like the burden-bearing parts (humps) of cows. (04-2-18)
हिमवानिव शैलानां समुद्रः सरितामिव। त्रिदशानां यथा शक्रो वसूनामिव हव्यवाट् ॥०४-२-१९॥
himavān iva śailānāṃ samudraḥ saritām iva। tridaśānāṃ yathā śakro vasūnām iva havyavāṭ ॥04-2-19॥
[हिमवान् (himavān) - the Himalaya; (himavān; the snow-covered one; Adjective used for mountain chain Himalaya;) इव (iva) - like; शैलानां (śailānāṃ) - of the mountains; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; सरिताम् (saritām) - of the rivers; इव (iva) - like; त्रिदशानां (tridaśānāṃ) - of the gods; यथा (yathā) - just as; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; वसूनाम् (vasūnām) - of the Vasus; इव (iva) - like; हव्यवाट् (havyavāṭ) - Agni (the fire that carries oblations);]
(Himalaya like among the mountains, the ocean like among the rivers; of the gods just as Indra, of the Vasus like Agni (the fire that carries oblations).)
Just as Himalaya is foremost among the mountains, as the ocean is among rivers, as Indra is among the gods, and as Agni is among the Vasus. (04-2-19)
मृगाणामिव शार्दूलो गरुडः पततामिव। वरः संनह्यमानानामर्जुनः किं करिष्यति ॥०४-२-२०॥
mṛgāṇām iva śārdūlo garuḍaḥ patatām iva| varaḥ saṁnahyamānānām arjunaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati ॥04-2-20॥
[मृगाणाम् (mṛgāṇām) - of deer; इव (iva) - like; शार्दूलः (śārdūlaḥ) - tiger; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; पतताम् (patatām) - of flyers; इव (iva) - like; वरः (varaḥ) - excellent; संनह्यमानानाम् (saṁnahyamānānām) - of those being equipped (for battle); अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; किम् (kim) - what; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Of deer like tiger, of flyers like Garuda, excellent of those being equipped for battle, Arjuna, what will (he) do?)
Just as the tiger is among deer and Garuda among birds, what will Arjuna, who is the best among those being equipped for battle, accomplish? (04-2-20)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

Arjuna said.
प्रतिज्ञां षण्ढकोऽस्मीति करिष्यामि महीपते। ज्याघातौ हि महान्तौ मे संवर्तुं नृप दुष्करौ ॥०४-२-२१॥
pratijñāṃ ṣaṇḍhako'smīti kariṣyāmi mahīpate। jyāghātau hi mahāntau me saṃvartuṃ nṛpa duṣkarau॥04-2-21॥
[प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñāṃ) - promise; षण्ढकः (ṣaṇḍhakaḥ) - as a eunuch; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; ज्या-घातौ (jyāghātau) - drawing of bowstring (two bow-pullings); हि (hi) - indeed; महान्तौ (mahāntau) - great; मे (me) - for me; संवर्तुं (saṃvartuṃ) - to accomplish; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; दुष्करौ (duṣkarau) - difficult (to do);]
(Promise, as a eunuch I am, thus I will do, O king. The two bowstring pullings indeed great for me to accomplish, O king, (are) difficult.)
I promise, 'I am a eunuch'—thus I will act, O king. Indeed, for me, the two great bowstring pullings are difficult to accomplish, O king. (04-2-21)
कर्णयोः प्रतिमुच्याहं कुण्डले ज्वलनोपमे। वेणीकृतशिरा राजन्नाम्ना चैव बृहन्नडा ॥०४-२-२२॥
karṇayoḥ pratimucyāhaṃ kuṇḍale jvalanopame। veṇīkṛtaśirā rājannāmnā caiva bṛhannaḍā॥04-2-22॥
[कर्णयोः (karṇayoḥ) - of the ears; प्रतिमुच्य (pratimucya) - having put on; अहम् (aham) - I; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; ज्वलन-उपमे (jvalana-upame) - resembling fire; वेणीकृत-शिरा (veṇīkṛta-śirā) - with hair tied in a braid; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; चैव (ca eva) - and also; बृहन्नडा (bṛhannaḍā) - Bṛhannaḍā;]
(Of the ears, having put on I earrings resembling fire, with hair tied in a braid, O king, by name also Bṛhannaḍā.)
O king, I, having put on earrings resembling fire in both ears and my hair tied in a braid, am also called Bṛhannaḍā. (04-2-22)
पठन्नाख्यायिकां नाम स्त्रीभावेन पुनः पुनः। रमयिष्ये महीपालमन्यांश्चान्तःपुरे जनान् ॥०४-२-२३॥
paṭhann ākhyāyikāṃ nāma strī-bhāvena punaḥ punaḥ । ramayiṣye mahī-pālam anyāṃś ca antaḥ-pure janān ॥04-2-23॥
[पठन् (paṭhan) - reciting; आख्यायिकां (ākhyāyikām) - story; नाम (nāma) - named; स्त्रीभावेन (strī-bhāvena) - with a female disposition; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; रमयिष्ये (ramayiṣye) - I will delight; महीपालम् (mahī-pālam) - king; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; च (ca) - and; अन्तःपुरे (antaḥ-pure) - in the inner palace; जनान् (janān) - people;]
(Reciting the story named (Akhyayika) with a female disposition again and again, I will delight the king and others—people in the inner palace.)
Reciting the story called Akhyayika in a feminine character again and again, I will entertain the king and other people in the inner palace. (04-2-23)
गीतं नृत्तं विचित्रं च वादित्रं विविधं तथा। शिक्षयिष्याम्यहं राजन्विराटभवने स्त्रियः ॥०४-२-२४॥
gītaṃ nṛttaṃ vicitraṃ ca vāditraṃ vividhaṃ tathā। śikṣayiṣyāmyahaṃ rājan virāṭabhavane striyaḥ ॥04-2-24॥
[गीतं (gītaṃ) - song; नृत्तं (nṛttaṃ) - dance; विचित्रं (vicitraṃ) - varied; च (ca) - and; वादित्रं (vāditraṃ) - musical instruments; विविधं (vividhaṃ) - of various kinds; तथा (tathā) - also; शिक्षयिष्यामि (śikṣayiṣyāmi) - I shall teach; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विराटभवने (virāṭabhavane) - in the palace of Virāṭa; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Song, dance, varied and musical instruments of different kinds also, I shall teach, I, O king, in the palace of Virāṭa, women.)
O king, I shall teach the women in the palace of Virāṭa song, dance, and various kinds of musical instruments. (04-2-24)
प्रजानां समुदाचारं बहु कर्मकृतं वदन्। छादयिष्यामि कौन्तेय माययात्मानमात्मना ॥०४-२-२५॥
prajānāṃ samudācāraṃ bahu-karmakṛtaṃ vadan। chādayiṣyāmi kaunteya māyayātmānam ātmanā ॥04-2-25॥
[प्रजानां (prajānāṃ) - of creatures; समुदाचारं (samudācāram) - general conduct; बहु (bahu) - much; कर्मकृतं (karmakṛtam) - deed-performed; वदन् (vadan) - speaking; छादयिष्यामि (chādayiṣyāmi) - I shall conceal; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by (my) self;]
(Of creatures general conduct, many deeds performed, speaking, I shall conceal, O son of Kunti, by illusion, the self, by (my) self.)
Speaking of the general conduct of creatures, performing many deeds, O son of Kunti, I shall conceal my true self by (my own) illusion. (04-2-25)
युधिष्ठिरस्य गेहेऽस्मि द्रौपद्याः परिचारिका। उषितास्मीति वक्ष्यामि पृष्टो राज्ञा च भारत ॥०४-२-२६॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya gehe 'smi draupadyāḥ paricārikā। uṣitāsmi iti vakṣyāmi pṛṣṭaḥ rājñā ca bhārata ॥04-2-26॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; गेहे (gehe) - in the house; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; परिचारिका (paricārikā) - servant; उषिता (uṣitā) - having dwelt; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of Yudhiṣṭhira in the house I am; of Draupadī the servant; having dwelt I am thus I shall say, having been asked by the king and O Bhārata.)
I shall say to the king, O Bhārata, that I am a servant of Draupadī in the house of Yudhiṣṭhira, and that I have lived there, when questioned. (04-2-26)
एतेन विधिना छन्नः कृतकेन यथा नलः। विहरिष्यामि राजेन्द्र विराटभवने सुखम् ॥०४-२-२७॥
etena vidhinā channaḥ kṛtakena yathā nalaḥ। vihariṣyāmi rājendra virāṭabhavane sukham ॥04-2-27॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; विधिना (vidhinā) - method; छन्नः (channaḥ) - concealed; कृतकेन (kṛtakena) - artificial; यथा (yathā) - just as; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; विहरिष्यामि (vihariṣyāmi) - I shall dwell; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; विराटभवने (virāṭabhavane) - in the house of Virāṭa; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;]
(By this method, concealed artificially, just as Nala, I shall dwell, O king, in the house of Virāṭa happily.)
O king, by this method I shall dwell happily and in disguise in the house of Virāṭa, just as Nala (did). (04-2-27)
