Vaiśampāyana said.
सा हता सूतपुत्रेण राजपुत्री समज्वलत्। वधं कृष्णा परीप्सन्ती सेनावाहस्य भामिनी ॥ जगामावासमेवाथ तदा सा द्रुपदात्मजा ॥०४-१६-१॥
sā hatā sūtaputreṇa rājaputrī samajvalat। vadhaṁ kṛṣṇā parīpsantī senāvāhasya bhāminī ॥ jagāmāvasamevātha tadā sā drupadātmajā ॥04-16-1॥
[सा (sā) - she; हता (hatā) - struck (or afflicted); सूतपुत्रेण (sūtaputreṇa) - by the son of the charioteer; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; समज्वलत् (samajvalat) - blazing together (i.e., burning with emotion or anger); वधं (vadham) - slaying; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); परीप्सन्ती (parīpsantī) - desiring intensely; सेनावाहस्य (senāvāhasya) - of the army-leader; भामिनी (bhāminī) - radiant lady; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; आवासम् (āvasam) - to the residence; एव (eva) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सा (sā) - she; द्रुपदात्मजा (drupadātmajā) - daughter of Drupada (Draupadī);]
(She, struck by the son of the charioteer, the princess blazing together, desiring intensely the slaying of the army-leader, the radiant lady Kṛṣṇā, went then at that time indeed to the residence, she, the daughter of Drupada.)
The princess, Draupadī, wounded by the son of the charioteer and blazing with anger, longing for the death of the army-leader, then went at that time directly to her residence. (04-16-1)
कृत्वा शौचं यथान्यायं कृष्णा वै तनुमध्यमा। गात्राणि वाससी चैव प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन सा ॥०४-१६-२॥
kṛtvā śaucaṃ yathā-nyāyaṃ kṛṣṇā vai tanumadhyamā। gātrāṇi vāsasī ca eva prakṣālya salilena sā॥04-16-2॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; शौचं (śaucaṃ) - purification; यथान्यायं (yathā-nyāyaṃ) - according to proper method; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; वै (vai) - indeed; तनुमध्यमा (tanumadhyamā) - slender-waisted; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; वाससी (vāsasī) - garments; चैव (ca eva) - and also; प्रक्षाल्य (prakṣālya) - having washed; सलिलेन (salilena) - with water; सा (sā) - she;]
(Having performed purification according to proper method, Kṛṣṇā, indeed slender-waisted, her limbs and garments also, having washed with water, she.)
After performing purification according to proper method, Kṛṣṇā, that slender-waisted lady, washed her limbs and garments with water. (04-16-2)
चिन्तयामास रुदती तस्य दुःखस्य निर्णयम्। किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कथं कार्यं भवेन्मम ॥०४-१६-३॥
cintayāmāsa rudatī tasya duḥkhasya nirṇayam। kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi kathaṃ kāryaṃ bhaven mama॥04-16-3॥
[चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - she began to ponder; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; तस्य (tasya) - of his; दुःखस्य (duḥkhasya) - of sorrow; निर्णयम् (nirṇayam) - decision; किं (kiṃ) - what; करोमि (karomi) - shall I do; क्व (kva) - where; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - shall I go; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; मम (mama) - my;]
(She began to ponder, weeping, the decision of his sorrow. What shall I do? Where shall I go? How may my task be?)
She began to ponder, weeping about his sorrowful situation. "What shall I do? Where shall I go? How will my task be accomplished?" (04-16-3)
इत्येवं चिन्तयित्वा सा भीमं वै मनसागमत्। नान्यः कर्ता ऋते भीमान्ममाद्य मनसः प्रियम् ॥०४-१६-४॥
ityevaṃ cintayitvā sā bhīmaṃ vai manasā agamat। nānyaḥ kartā ṛte bhīmāt mama adya manasaḥ priyam॥04-16-4॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having thought; सा (sā) - she; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; वै (vai) - indeed; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; गमत् (agamat) - she went; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; ऋते (ṛte) - except; भीमान् (bhīmāt) - than Bhīma; मम (mama) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; प्रियं (priyam) - dear;]
(Thus, having thought in this way, she with the mind went to Bhīma indeed. Not any other doer except Bhīma is today to me dear of the mind.)
Thus reflecting in this way, she mentally approached Bhīma indeed. Today, no one except Bhīma is dear to my heart. (04-16-4)
तत उत्थाय रात्रौ सा विहाय शयनं स्वकम्। प्राद्रवन्नाथमिच्छन्ती कृष्णा नाथवती सती ॥ दुःखेन महता युक्ता मानसेन मनस्विनी ॥०४-१६-५॥
tat utthāya rātrau sā vihāya śayanaṃ svakam। prādravannāthamicchantī kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī॥ duḥkhena mahatā yuktā mānasena manasvinī॥04-16-5॥
[तत (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; सा (sā) - she; विहाय (vihāya) - abandoning; शयनं (śayanaṃ) - bed; स्वकम् (svakam) - her own; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - ran forth; नाथम् (nātham) - lord; इच्छन्ती (icchantī) - desiring; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); नाथवती (nāthavatī) - having a protector; सती (satī) - the virtuous; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; महता (mahatā) - great; युक्ता (yuktā) - endowed; मानसेन (mānasena) - in mind; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - noble-minded;]
(Then, having arisen at night, she, abandoning her own bed, ran forth desiring her lord—Kṛṣṇā, who has a protector, the virtuous woman—endowed with great sorrow in mind, noble-minded.)
Then, at night, she arose, left her bed, and ran forth desiring her lord—Draupadī, the virtuous and noble-minded, suffering great sorrow in her mind, though one who had a protector. (04-16-5)
सा वै महानसे प्राप्य भीमसेनं शुचिस्मिता। सर्वश्वेतेव माहेयी वने जाता त्रिहायनी ॥ उपातिष्ठत पाञ्चाली वाशितेव महागजम् ॥०४-१६-६॥
sā vai mahānase prāpya bhīmasenaṃ śucismitā. sarvaśveteva māheyī vane jātā trihāyanī ॥ upātiṣṭhata pāñcālī vāśiteva mahāgajam ॥04-16-6॥
[सा (sā) - she; वै (vai) - indeed; महानसे (mahānase) - in the kitchen; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; भीमसेनं (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; (proper noun) शुचिस्मिता (śucismitā) - with a pure smile; सर्वश्वेतेव (sarvaśveteva) - like one entirely dressed in white; माहेयी (māheyī) - daughter of Māhī (Draupadī); वने (vane) - in the forest; जाता (jātā) - having lived; त्रिहायनी (trihāyanī) - for three years; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - she attended; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pañcālī (Draupadī); वाशितेव (vāśiteva) - like a controlled; महागजम् (mahā-gajam) - great elephant;]
(She indeed, having reached Bhīmasena in the kitchen, with a pure smile, Māheyī like one entirely dressed in white, having lived in the forest for three years, Pañcālī attended like (one) who has tamed a great elephant.)
She, Draupadī (Māheyī), having reached Bhīmasena in the kitchen, with a pure smile, looking like one clad all in white, having lived three years in the forest, attended (served) him just as one would handle a great, tamed elephant. (04-16-6)
सा लतेव महाशालं फुल्लं गोमतितीरजम्। बाहुभ्यां परिरभ्यैनं प्राबोधयदनिन्दिता ॥०४-१६-७॥
sā lateva mahāśālaṃ phullaṃ gomatitīrajam| bāhubhyāṃ parirabhyainaṃ prābodhayadaninditā ॥04-16-7॥
[सा (sā) - she; लतेव (lateva) - like a creeper; महाशालं (mahāśālam) - great tree; फुल्लं (phullam) - blossoming; गोमतितीरजम् (gomatitīrajam) - born on the bank of the Gomati; बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyām) - with both arms; परिरभ्य (parirabhya) - having embraced; एनं (enam) - him; प्राबोधयत् (prābodhayat) - awakened; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - the blameless one;]
(She, like a creeper (embracing) a great blossoming tree born on the bank of the Gomati, having embraced him with both arms, awakened (him), the blameless one.)
She, the blameless one, like a creeper embracing a great blossoming tree growing on the bank of the Gomati, embraced him with both arms and awakened him. (04-16-7)
सिंहं सुप्तं वने दुर्गे मृगराजवधूरिव ॥०४-१६-७॥
siṃhaṃ suptaṃ vane durge mṛgarājavadhūriva ॥04-16-7॥
[सिंहं (siṃhaṃ) - lion (accusative singular); सुप्तं (suptaṃ) - sleeping (accusative singular); वने (vane) - in the forest; दुर्गे (durge) - in the fort (difficult place); मृगराजवधूः (mṛgarājavadhūḥ) - the lion's wife (nominative singular, 'consort of the king of beasts'); इव (iva) - like;]
(The lion, sleeping, in the forest, in the fort, like the lion's wife.)
Like the lion's wife (so moves) the sleeping lion in the forest fort. (04-16-7)
वीणेव मधुराभाषा गान्धारं साधु मूर्च्छिता। अभ्यभाषत पाञ्चाली भीमसेनमनिन्दिता ॥०४-१६-८॥
vīṇeva madhurābhāṣā gāndhāraṃ sādhu mūrcchitā। abhyabhāṣata pāñcālī bhīmasenam aninditā ॥04-16-8॥
[वीणेव (vīṇā eva) - like a vīṇā; मधुराभाषा (madhurābhāṣā) - sweet-spoken; गान्धारं (gāndhāram) - gāndhāra note; साधु (sādhu) - properly; मूर्च्छिता (mūrcchitā) - intoned; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pāñcālī (Draupadī); भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless;]
(Like a vīṇā, sweet-spoken, the gāndhāra note properly intoned, addressed Pāñcālī, Bhīmasena, blameless.)
Like a vīṇā with properly intoned sweet gāndhāra, the sweet-voiced and blameless Pāñcālī addressed Bhīmasena. (04-16-8)
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ किं शेषे भीमसेन यथा मृतः। नामृतस्य हि पापीयान्भार्यामालभ्य जीवति ॥०४-१६-९॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kiṃ śeṣe bhīmasena yathā mṛtaḥ। nāmṛtasya hi pāpīyānbhāryām ālabhya jīvati॥04-16-9॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; किं (kiṃ) - why; शेषे (śeṣe) - do you lie (remain, rest); भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhīmasena; यथा (yathā) - as; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; न (na) - not; अमृतस्य (amṛtasya) - than the one who is dead; हि (hi) - indeed; पापीयान् (pāpīyān) - more sinful; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; आलभ्य (ālabhya) - having touched (embraced); जीवति (jīvati) - lives;]
(Arise, arise, why do you lie, Bhīmasena, as (if) dead? Indeed, whoever lives after touching (embracing) his wife is more sinful than the one who is dead.)
Arise, arise! Why do you lie there, Bhīmasena, as if dead? Truly, one who lives on after touching his wife is more sinful than a dead man. (04-16-9)
तस्मिञ्जीवति पापिष्ठे सेनावाहे मम द्विषि। तत्कर्म कृतवत्यद्य कथं निद्रां निषेवसे ॥०४-१६-१०॥
tasmiñjīvati pāpiṣṭhe senāvāhe mama dviṣi। tatkarma kṛtavatī adya kathaṁ nidrāṁ niṣeavase ॥04-16-10॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; जीवति (jīvati) - while living; पापिष्ठे (pāpiṣṭhe) - most sinful; सेनावाहे (senāvāhe) - army-chief; मम (mama) - of me; द्विषि (dviṣi) - enemy; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - act; कृतवती (kṛtavatī) - having done (feminine agent); अद्य (adya) - today; कथम् (katham) - how; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; निषेवसे (niṣeavase) - do you enjoy;]
(In him living, most sinful, army-chief, my enemy; that act having done today, how sleep do you enjoy?)
While that most sinful army-chief, my enemy, still lives, having done that deed today, how do you enjoy sleep? (04-16-10)
स सम्प्रहाय शयनं राजपुत्र्या प्रबोधितः। उपातिष्ठत मेघाभः पर्यङ्के सोपसङ्ग्रहे ॥०४-१६-११॥
sa sam-prahāya śayanaṃ rājaputryā prabodhitaḥ। upātiṣṭhata meghābhaḥ paryaṅke sopasaṅgrahe॥04-16-11॥
[स (sa) - he; सम्प्रहाय (sam-prahāya) - having abandoned; having left; शयनं (śayanam) - bed; राजपुत्र्या (rājaputryā) - by the princess; प्रबोधितः (prabodhitaḥ) - awakened; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - he approached; he attended; मेघाभः (meghābhaḥ) - cloud-like; having the appearance of a cloud; पर्यङ्के (paryaṅke) - on the couch; सोपसङ्ग्रहे (sa-upasaṅgrahe) - with careful handling; with gentleness; with embrace;]
(He, having abandoned the bed, awakened by the princess, cloud-like, approached the couch with gentleness.)
He, awakened by the princess, left the bed and, with a cloud-like appearance, attentively approached the couch with gentle care. (04-16-11)
अथाब्रवीद्राजपुत्रीं कौरव्यो महिषीं प्रियाम्। केनास्यर्थेन सम्प्राप्ता त्वरितेव ममान्तिकम् ॥०४-१६-१२॥
athābravīd rājaputrīṁ kauravyo mahiṣīṁ priyām। kenāsy arthena samprāptā tvariteva mam āntikam॥04-16-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; राजपुत्रीं (rājaputrīm) - princess; कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - Kaurava; महिषीं (mahiṣīṁ) - queen (wife); प्रियाम् (priyām) - beloved; केन (kena) - by what; अस्यार्थेन (asya arthena) - for this purpose; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - arrived; त्वरिता-इव (tvaritā-iva) - as if in haste; मम (mama) - to me; अन्तिकम् (āntikam) - near;]
(Then spoke (to) the princess, the Kaurava, (his) beloved queen: "By what purpose have you thus arrived, as if in haste, near me?" (04-16-12))
Then the Kaurava spoke to his beloved queen, the princess: "For what reason have you come so hurriedly near me?" (04-16-12)
न ते प्रकृतिमान्वर्णः कृशा पाण्डुश्च लक्ष्यसे। आचक्ष्व परिशेषेण सर्वं विद्यामहं यथा ॥०४-१६-१३॥
na te prakṛtim ān varṇaḥ kṛśā pāṇḍuś ca lakṣyase. ācakṣva pariśeṣeṇa sarvaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yathā ॥04-16-13॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - natural state; आन् (ān) - towards; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; कृशा (kṛśā) - emaciated; पाण्डुश् (pāṇḍuś) - pale; च (ca) - and; लक्ष्यसे (lakṣyase) - you are seen; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; परिशेषेण (pariśeṣeṇa) - in detail; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; विद्याम् (vidyām) - may I know; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; यथा (yathā) - how;]
(Not your natural color towards emaciated pale and you are seen. Tell in detail everything may I know I how. (04-16-13))
This is not your natural color; you appear emaciated and pale. Tell me everything completely, so that I may know how it is. (04-16-13)
सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं द्वेष्यं वा यदि वा प्रियम्। यथावत्सर्वमाचक्ष्व श्रुत्वा ज्ञास्यामि यत्परम् ॥०४-१६-१४॥
sukhaṃ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṃ dveṣyaṃ vā yadi vā priyam. yathāvatsarvamācakṣva śrutvā jñāsyāmi yatparam ॥04-16-14॥
[सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; द्वेष्यम् (dveṣyam) - what is hated; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; प्रियम् (priyam) - what is dear; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ज्ञास्यामि (jñāsyāmi) - I shall know; यत् (yat) - what; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(Happiness or if or suffering, what is hated or if or what is dear; as it is, everything tell, having heard, I shall know what (is) supreme.)
Whether it is happiness or suffering, what is hated or what is dear, tell me everything as it is; having heard, I shall know what is supreme. (04-16-14)
अहमेव हि ते कृष्णे विश्वास्यः सर्वकर्मसु। अहमापत्सु चापि त्वां मोक्षयामि पुनः पुनः ॥०४-१६-१५॥
ahameva hi te kṛṣṇe viśvāsyaḥ sarvakarmasu। aham āpatsu ca api tvām mokṣayāmi punaḥ punaḥ॥04-16-15॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; ते (te) - to you; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Krishna (dark-complexioned lady); विश्वास्यः (viśvāsyaḥ) - to be trusted; सर्वकर्मसु (sarvakarmasu) - in all actions; अहम् (aham) - I; आपत्सु (āpatsu) - in calamities; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मोक्षयामि (mokṣayāmi) - I release; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(I indeed surely to you O Krishna to be trusted in all actions. I in calamities and also you release again and again.)
Indeed, O Krishna, only I am to be trusted by you in all matters; in times of trouble as well, I will release you again and again. (04-16-15)
शीघ्रमुक्त्वा यथाकामं यत्ते कार्यं विवक्षितम्। गच्छ वै शयनायैव पुरा नान्योऽवबुध्यते ॥०४-१६-१६॥
śīghram uktvā yathākāmaṃ yat te kāryaṃ vivakṣitam। gaccha vai śayanāyaiva purā nānyo'vabudhyate ॥04-16-16॥
[शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as you desire; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - your; कार्यं (kāryam) - work; विवक्षितम् (vivakṣitam) - intended; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; वै (vai) - indeed; शयनायैव (śayanāya eva) - for sleeping only; पुरा (purā) - before; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अवबुध्यते (avabudhyate) - realizes;]
(Quickly having spoken, as you desire, what work of yours is intended, go indeed for sleeping only before another realizes.)
Having quickly said whatever work you intend as you wish, go straight to sleep before anyone else notices. (04-16-16)
