अशोच्यं नु कुतस्तस्या यस्या भर्ता युधिष्ठिरः। जानन्सर्वाणि दुःखानि किं मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥०४-१७-१॥
aśocyaṃ nu kutastasyā yasyā bhartā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। jānan sarvāṇi duḥkhāni kiṃ māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi॥04-17-1॥
[अशोच्यं (aśocyam) - not-to-be-grieved-for; नु (nu) - indeed; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; यस्या (yasyā) - whose; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sorrows; किं (kiṃ) - why; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - you ask;]
(Not-to-be-grieved-for indeed from where of her whose husband is Yudhishthira, knowing all sorrows, why me you ask?)
How can she, whose husband is Yudhishthira, be considered one who deserves grief? Since you know all sorrows, why do you ask me?
यन्मां दासीप्रवादेन प्रातिकामी तदानयत्। सभायां पार्षदो मध्ये तन्मां दहति भारत ॥०४-१७-२॥
yan māṃ dāsī-pravādena prātikāmī tad ānayat। sabhāyāṃ pārṣadaḥ madhye tan māṃ dahati bhārata॥04-17-2॥

(Which me with the term 'slave-woman' Prātikāmī that brought, in the assembly amidst the attendants, that me burns, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, that which Prātikāmī brought me with the label of 'slave-woman' into the assembly before the attendants, that burns me (with shame), O Bhārata. (04-17-2)
पार्थिवस्य सुता नाम का नु जीवेत मादृशी। अनुभूय भृशं दुःखमन्यत्र द्रौपदीं प्रभो ॥०४-१७-३॥
pārthivasya sutā nāma kā nu jīvet mādṛśī। anubhūya bhṛśaṃ duḥkham anyatra draupadīṃ prabho ॥04-17-3॥

(Of a king the daughter called, which woman indeed would live like me, having experienced exceeding suffering besides Draupadī, O lord?)
O lord, which daughter of a king, called such, would still live after experiencing such great suffering like I have, except Draupadī? (04-17-3)
वनवासगतायाश्च सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना। परामर्शं द्वितीयं च सोढुमुत्सहते नु का ॥०४-१७-४॥
vanavāsagatāyāś ca saindhavena durātmanā। parāmarśaṃ dvitīyaṃ ca soḍhum utsahate nu kā॥04-17-4॥
[वनवासगतायाः (vanavāsagatāyāḥ) - of her who has gone to the forest; च (ca) - and; सैन्धवेन (saindhavena) - by the Sindhu prince; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the evil-minded one; परामर्शं (parāmarśam) - touch; द्वितीयं (dvitīyam) - second; च (ca) - and; सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to endure; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; नु (nu) - indeed; का (kā) - which woman;]
(And of her who has gone to the forest, by the Sindhu prince, by the evil-minded one, touch second and to endure is able indeed which woman.)
Which woman who has gone to the forest could endure a second touch by the evil-minded Sindhu prince? (04-17-4)
मत्स्यराज्ञः समक्षं च तस्य धूर्तस्य पश्यतः। कीचकेन पदा स्पृष्टा का नु जीवेत मादृशी ॥०४-१७-५॥
matsyarājñaḥ samakṣaṃ ca tasya dhūrtasya paśyataḥ। kīcakena padā spṛṣṭā kā nu jīvet mādṛśī ॥04-17-5॥
[मत्स्यराज्ञः (matsyarājñaḥ) - of the king of Matsya; समक्षं (samakṣam) - in the presence; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धूर्तस्य (dhūrtasya) - of the rogue; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching; कीचकेन (kīcakena) - by Kīcaka; पदा (padā) - with the foot; स्पृष्टा (spṛṣṭā) - touched; का (kā) - which woman; नु (nu) - indeed; जीवेत (jīvet) - would live; मादृशी (mādṛśī) - like me;]
(Of the king of Matsya, in the presence and of that rogue while watching, by Kīcaka with the foot touched—which woman indeed would live like me?)
Which woman, having been touched with the foot by Kīcaka in the presence of the king of Matsya and that rogue watching, could possibly survive being like me? (04-17-5)
एवं बहुविधैः क्लेशैः क्लिश्यमानां च भारत। न मां जानासि कौन्तेय किं फलं जीवितेन मे ॥०४-१७-६॥
evaṃ bahuvidhaiḥ kleśaiḥ kliśyamānāṃ ca bhārata। na māṃ jānāsi kaunteya kiṃ phalaṃ jīviten a me ॥04-17-6॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; क्लेशैः (kleśaiḥ) - by sufferings; क्लिश्यमानां (kliśyamānām) - being afflicted; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; मां (māṃ) - me; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; किं (kiṃ) - what; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - by life; मे (me) - of me;]
(Thus, by many kinds of sufferings being afflicted and, O Bhārata, not me you know, O Kaunteya, what fruit by life of me.)
O Bhārata, thus afflicted by many kinds of sufferings, you do not know me, O son of Kunti, what is the benefit of my life. (04-17-6)
योऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कीचको नाम भारत। सेनानीः पुरुषव्याघ्र स्यालः परमदुर्मतिः ॥०४-१७-७॥
yo'yaṃ rājño virāṭasya kīcako nāma bhārata। senānīḥ puruṣavyāghra syālaḥ paramadurmatiḥ ॥04-17-7॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; नाम (nāma) - named; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सेनानीः (senānīḥ) - commander; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; स्यालः (syālaḥ) - brother-in-law; परमदुर्मतिः (paramadurmatiḥ) - of exceedingly evil mind;]

O Bhārata, this Kīcaka, named as such, is the commander of King Virāṭa, a tiger among men, brother-in-law, and of exceedingly evil mind. (4-17-7)
स मां सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण वसन्तीं राजवेश्मनि। नित्यमेवाह दुष्टात्मा भार्या मम भवेति वै ॥०४-१७-८॥
sa māṃ sairandhriveṣeṇa vasantīṃ rājaveśmani। nityamevāha duṣṭātmā bhāryā mama bhaveti vai ॥04-17-8॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण (sairandhriveṣeṇa) - in the guise of a maidservant; वसन्तीम् (vasantīm) - dwelling; राजवेश्मनि (rājaveśmani) - in the king's palace; नित्यं (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; आह (āha) - said; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; मम (mama) - my; भव (bhava) - be; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He to me, dwelling in the guise of a maidservant in the king's palace, always indeed said, the wicked-minded one, "Be my wife" thus indeed.)
He, the wicked-minded one, always said to me, as I dwelt in the guise of a maidservant in the king's palace, "Be my wife". (04-17-8)
तेनोपमन्त्र्यमाणाया वधार्हेण सपत्नहन्। कालेनेव फलं पक्वं हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ॥०४-१७-९॥
tenopamantryamāṇāyā vadhārheṇa sapatnahan। kāleneva phalaṃ pakvaṃ hṛdayaṃ me vidīryate॥04-17-9॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; उपमन्त्र्यमाणाया (upamantryamāṇāyāḥ) - of being secretly advised; वधार्हेण (vadhārheṇa) - by one deserving death; सपत्नहन् (sapatna-han) - destroyer of rival; कालेन (kālena) - by time; इव (iva) - as if; फलं (phalam) - fruit; पक्वं (pakvam) - ripe; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; मे (me) - my; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) - is torn asunder;]
(By him, (by) being secretly advised, by one deserving death, destroyer of rival, like by time (as if) fruit ripe, (my) heart is torn asunder.)
My heart is torn asunder by him, the destroyer of rivals, who, deserving death, secretly persuaded me—just as a ripe fruit is split open by time. (04-17-9)
भ्रातरं च विगर्हस्व ज्येष्ठं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम्। यस्यास्मि कर्मणा प्राप्ता दुःखमेतदनन्तकम् ॥०४-१७-१०॥
bhrātaraṁ ca vigarhasva jyeṣṭhaṁ durdyūta-devinam। yasyāsmi karmaṇā prāptā duḥkham etad anantakam ॥04-17-10॥
[भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - brother; च (ca) - and; विगर्हस्व (vigarhasva) - censure; ज्येष्ठं (jyeṣṭham) - elder; दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् (durdyūta-devinam) - addicted to evil gambling; यस्य (yasya) - by whose; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - attained; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; एतद् (etad) - this; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless;]
(And censure the brother, the elder, addicted to evil gambling, by whose action I am attained (to) this endless suffering.)
And censure your elder brother, who is addicted to evil gambling, by whose actions I have come to this endless suffering. (04-17-10)
को हि राज्यं परित्यज्य सर्वस्वं चात्मना सह। प्रव्रज्यायैव दीव्येत विना दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ॥०४-१७-११॥
ko hi rājyaṃ parityajya sarvasvaṃ cātmanā saha। pravrajyāyaiva dīvyeta vinā durdyūta-devinam ॥04-17-11॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - surely; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; सर्वस्वं (sarvasvaṃ) - all wealth; च (ca) - and; आत्मना (ātmanā) - with oneself; सह (saha) - together; प्रव्रज्यायै (pravrajyāyai) - for renunciation; एव (eva) - only; दीव्येत (dīvyeta) - would gamble; विना (vinā) - without; दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् (durdyūta-devinam) - evil dice-god;]
(Who surely, kingdom having abandoned, all wealth and with oneself together, for renunciation only, would gamble, without the evil dice-god.)
Who indeed would abandon his kingdom and all wealth, together with himself, and set out for renunciation, except for the evil dice-god? (04-17-11)
यदि निष्कसहस्रेण यच्चान्यत्सारवद्धनम्। सायम्प्रातरदेविष्यदपि संवत्सरान्बहून् ॥०४-१७-१२॥
yadi niṣka-sahasreṇa yac ca anyat sāra-vat dhanam। sāyam prātaḥ adevīṣyat api saṃvatsarān bahūn॥04-17-12॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; निष्कसहस्रेण (niṣka-sahasreṇa) - with a thousand niṣkas (gold coins); यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; सारवत् (sāra-vat) - substantial; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; सायम् (sāyam) - in the evening; प्रातर् (prātaḥ) - in the morning; अदेविष्यत् (adeviṣyat) - (he) would not desire; अपि (api) - even; संवत्सरान् (saṃvatsarān) - years; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(If with a thousand niṣkas, and whatever other substantial wealth, in the evening and in the morning, (he) would not even desire for many years.)
If, even with a thousand gold coins and other substantial wealth, he would not wish for it in the evening and morning, even for many years. (4-17-12)
रुक्मं हिरण्यं वासांसि यानं युग्यमजाविकम्। अश्वाश्वतरसङ्घांश्च न जातु क्षयमावहेत् ॥०४-१७-१३॥
rukmaṃ hiraṇyaṃ vāsāṃsi yānaṃ yugyamajāvikam। aśvāśvatarasaṅghāṃś ca na jātu kṣayam āvahet॥04-17-13॥
[रुक्मं (rukmam) - golden object; bronze; हिरण्यं (hiraṇyam) - gold; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; यानं (yānam) - vehicle; युग्यम् (yugyam) - yokeable (for yoking); अजाविकम् (ajāvikam) - sheep and goats; अश्वाश्वतरसङ्घान् (aśvāśvatarasaṅghān) - assemblies of horses and mules; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; decay; आवहेत् (āvahet) - should bring; should cause;]
(Golden objects, gold, garments, vehicle, yokeable sheep and goats, assemblies of horses and mules and — not ever should bring destruction.)
Golden objects, gold, garments, vehicles, sheep and goats for yoking, and groups of horses and mules — never should bring about any loss. (4-17-13)
सोऽयं द्यूतप्रवादेन श्रिया प्रत्यवरोपितः। तूष्णीमास्ते यथा मूढः स्वानि कर्माणि चिन्तयन् ॥०४-१७-१४॥
so'yaṁ dyūta-pravādena śriyā pratyavaropitaḥ। tūṣṇīm āste yathā mūḍhaḥ svāni karmāṇi cintayan ॥04-17-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; द्यूतप्रवादेन (dyūta-pravādena) - by (the) accusation (report) of gambling; श्रिया (śriyā) - by fortune (splendor); प्रत्यवरोपितः (pratyavaropitaḥ) - cast down; degraded; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; आस्ते (āste) - remains; sits; यथा (yathā) - like; as; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - confused one; bewildered; स्वानि (svāni) - his own; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - pondering; thinking;]
(He, this one, by the accusation of gambling, by fortune, cast down, sits in silence as a bewildered one, thinking of his own actions.)
He, having been degraded in fame due to the charge of gambling and robbed of his prosperity, sits silently like one bewildered, reflecting upon his own deeds. (04-17-14)
दश नागसहस्राणि पद्मिनां हेममालिनाम्। यं यान्तमनुयान्तीह सोऽयं द्यूतेन जीवति ॥०४-१७-१५॥
daśa nāgasahasrāṇi padmināṃ hemamālinām। yaṃ yāntam anuyāntīha so'yaṃ dyūtena jīvati॥04-17-15॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; नागसहस्राणि (nāgasahasrāṇi) - thousand elephants; पद्मिनां (padmināṃ) - of those possessing lotuses (i.e., elephants with lotus-like markings); हेममालिनाम् (hemamālinām) - adorned with golden garlands; यं (yaṃ) - whom; यान्तम् (yāntam) - departing; अनुयान्ति (anuyānti) - follow; इह (iha) - here; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; जीवति (jīvati) - lives;]
(Ten thousand elephants of those with lotuses, adorned with golden garlands; whom departing, follow here, he, this, by gambling, lives.)
He—whom, as he departs, ten thousand lotus-marked elephants adorned with golden garlands follow here—this man lives by gambling. (04-17-15)
तथा शतसहस्राणि नृणाममिततेजसाम्। उपासते महाराजमिन्द्रप्रस्थे युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०४-१७-१६॥
tathā śatasahasrāṇi nṛṇām amitatejasām। upāsate mahārājam indraprasthe yudhiṣṭhiram ॥04-17-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शतसहस्राणि (śatasahasrāṇi) - hundreds of thousands; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; अमिततेजसाम् (amitatejasām) - of immeasurable energy; उपासते (upāsate) - serve; महाराजम् (mahārājam) - the great king; इन्द्रप्रस्थे (indraprasthe) - in Indraprastha; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(Thus, hundreds of thousands of men of immeasurable energy serve the great king Yudhishthira in Indraprastha.)
In this way, hundreds of thousands of valiant men serve the great king Yudhishthira in Indraprastha. (04-17-16)
शतं दासीसहस्राणि यस्य नित्यं महानसे। पात्रीहस्तं दिवारात्रमतिथीन्भोजयन्त्युत ॥०४-१७-१७॥
śataṃ dāsīsahasrāṇi yasya nityaṃ mahānase। pātrīhastaṃ divārātram atithīn bhojayanty uta ॥04-17-17॥
[शतम् (śatam) - hundred; दासी-सहस्राणि (dāsī-sahasrāṇi) - thousand female servants; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; महानसे (mahānase) - in the kitchen; पात्री-हस्तम् (pātrī-hastam) - with vessels in their hands; दिवारात्रम् (divā-rātram) - day and night; अतिथीन् (atithīn) - guests; भोजयन्ति (bhojayanti) - feed; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Hundred thousand female servants whose always in the kitchen, with vessels in their hands, day and night guests feed indeed.)
In whose kitchen, always, a hundred thousand female servants continually feed guests day and night with vessels in hand, indeed. (04-17-17)
एष निष्कसहस्राणि प्रदाय ददतां वरः। द्यूतजेन ह्यनर्थेन महता समुपावृतः ॥०४-१७-१८॥
eṣa niṣka-sahasrāṇi pradāya dadatāṃ varaḥ। dyūtajena hi anarthena mahatā samupāvṛtaḥ॥04-17-18॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; निष्कसहस्राणि (niṣka-sahasrāṇi) - thousand gold pieces; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; ददतां (dadatām) - of givers; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; द्यूतजेन (dyūtajena) - by gambling; हि (hi) - indeed; अनर्थेन (anarthena) - by misfortune; महता (mahatā) - great; समुपावृतः (samupāvṛtaḥ) - overcome;]
(This (person), having given thousands of gold coins, boon of givers, indeed by great misfortune born of gambling, is overcome.)
This one, having given thousands of gold coins, best among givers, has truly been overcome by the great misfortune caused by gambling. (04-17-18)
एनं हि स्वरसम्पन्ना बहवः सूतमागधाः। सायम्प्रातरुपातिष्ठन्सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः ॥०४-१७-१९॥
enaṁ hi svarasampannā bahavaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ। sāyamprātar upātiṣṭhan sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ॥04-17-19॥
[एनम् (enam) - him; हि (hi) - indeed; स्वरसम्पन्नाः (svarasampannāḥ) - endowed with melodious voices; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सूतमागधाः (sūtamāgadhāḥ) - bards and panegyrists; सायम्प्रातर् (sāyamprātar) - in the evenings and mornings; उपातिष्ठन् (upātiṣṭhan) - attended; सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः (sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ) - wearing polished gem earrings;]
(Him indeed with melodious voices many bards and panegyrists in the evenings and mornings attended, wearing polished gem earrings.)
Many bards and panegyrists endowed with melodious voices, adorned with polished gem earrings, indeed attended him every evening and morning. (04-17-19)
सहस्रमृषयो यस्य नित्यमासन्सभासदः। तपःश्रुतोपसम्पन्नाः सर्वकामैरुपस्थिताः ॥०४-१७-२०॥
sahasram ṛṣayo yasya nityam āsan sabhāsadaḥ। tapaḥśrutopasampannāḥ sarvakāmair upasthitāḥ॥04-17-20॥
[सहस्रम् (sahasram) - a thousand; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आसन् (āsan) - were (existed); सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - members of the assembly; तपः-श्रुत-उपसम्पन्नाः (tapaḥ-śruta-upasampannāḥ) - endowed with austerity and learning; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desired objects; उपस्थिताः (upasthitāḥ) - present;]
(A thousand sages of whom always were assembly members, endowed with austerity and learning, present with all desired objects.)
A thousand sages, who were always members of his assembly, endowed with austerity and learning, present with every desired object. (04-17-20)
अन्धान्वृद्धांस्तथानाथान्सर्वान्राष्ट्रेषु दुर्गतान्। बिभर्त्यविमना नित्यमानृशंस्याद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२१॥
andhān vṛddhāṁs tathā anāthān sarvān rāṣṭreṣu durgatān। bibharti avimanā nityam ānṛśaṁsyāt yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥04-17-21॥
[अन्धान् (andhān) - the blind ones; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - the aged ones; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अनाथान् (anāthān) - the destitute (those without protectors); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; राष्ट्रेषु (rāṣṭreṣu) - in the kingdoms; दुर्गतान् (durgatān) - the afflicted ones; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - supports; अविमनाः (avimanāḥ) - with an untroubled mind; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आनृशंस्यात् (ānṛśaṁsyāt) - from compassion; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(The blind, the aged, likewise the destitute, all the afflicted in the kingdoms, Yudhishthira always supports with an untroubled mind, out of compassion.)
Yudhishthira, always out of compassion, supports all the blind, aged, destitute, and afflicted throughout the kingdoms with an unwavering mind. (04-17-21)
स एष निरयं प्राप्तो मत्स्यस्य परिचारकः। सभायां देविता राज्ञः कङ्को ब्रूते युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२२॥
sa eṣa nirayaṃ prāpto matsyasya paricārakaḥ। sabhāyāṃ devitā rājñaḥ kaṅko brūte yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-17-22॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; निरयं (nirayaṃ) - hell; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having attained; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of Matsya; परिचारकः (paricārakaḥ) - attendant; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; देविता (devitā) - having become a deity; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; कङ्कः (kaṅkaḥ) - Kaṅka; ब्रूते (brūte) - says; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(He this hell having attained of Matsya attendant in the assembly having become a deity of the king Kaṅka says Yudhishthira.)
He, this attendant of Matsya, having attained hell, in the assembly, having become Kaṅka the king's courtier, is called Yudhishthira. (04-17-22)
इन्द्रप्रस्थे निवसतः समये यस्य पार्थिवाः। आसन्बलिभृतः सर्वे सोऽद्यान्यैर्भृतिमिच्छति ॥०४-१७-२३॥
indraprasthe nivasataḥ samaye yasya pārthivāḥ। āsan balibhṛtaḥ sarve so'dyānyair bhṛtim icchati ॥04-17-23॥
[इन्द्रप्रस्थे (indraprasthe) - in Indraprastha; निवसतः (nivasataḥ) - dwelling; समये (samaye) - at the time; यस्य (yasya) - whose; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; आसन् (āsan) - were; बलिभृतः (balibhṛtaḥ) - tribute-payers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सः (saḥ) - he; अद्य (adya) - now; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; भृतिम् (bhṛtim) - support; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(In Indraprastha, while dwelling, at the time whose kings were all tribute-payers, he now desires support from others.)
While he dwelled in Indraprastha, all the kings were his tribute-payers; now, he seeks support from others. (04-17-23)
पार्थिवाः पृथिवीपाला यस्यासन्वशवर्तिनः। स वशे विवशो राजा परेषामद्य वर्तते ॥०४-१७-२४॥
pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpālā yasya āsan vaśavartinaḥ। sa vaśe vivaśo rājā pareṣām adya vartate॥04-17-24॥
[पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; पृथिवीपाला (pṛthivīpālā) - lords of the earth; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; आसन् (āsan) - were; वशवर्तिनः (vaśavartinaḥ) - obedient; सः (saḥ) - he; वशे (vaśe) - under the control; विवशः (vivaśaḥ) - helpless; राजा (rājā) - king; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; अद्य (adya) - today; वर्तते (vartate) - remains;]
(Kings, lords of the earth, of whom were obedient, he under the control, helpless, the king, of others, today, remains.)
The kings, the lords of the earth, who were once obedient to him, today that very king now remains helplessly under the control of others. (04-17-24)
प्रताप्य पृथिवीं सर्वां रश्मिवानिव तेजसा। सोऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य सभास्तारो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२५॥
pratāpya pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ raśmivān iva tejasā। so'yaṃ rājño virāṭasya sabhāstāro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥04-17-25॥
[प्रताप्य (pratāpya) - having illuminated; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth (accusative singular); सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - the radiant one; इव (iva) - like; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; सभास्तारः (sabhāstāraḥ) - the star of the assembly; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Having illuminated all the earth by brilliance like the radiant one, this Yudhiṣṭhira is the star of the assembly of King Virāṭa.)
After illuminating the whole earth with his brilliance like the sun, this Yudhiṣṭhira is the star of King Virāṭa's assembly. (04-17-25)
यमुपासन्त राजानः सभायामृषिभिः सह। तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य पाण्डव पाण्डवम् ॥०४-१७-२६॥
yam-upāsanta rājānaḥ sabhāyām ṛṣibhiḥ saha। tam-upāsīnam adyānyam paśya pāṇḍava pāṇḍavam ॥04-17-26॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; उपासन्त (upāsanta) - approached; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; सह (saha) - together with; तम् (tam) - him; उपासीनम् (upāsīnam) - seated; अद्य (adya) - today; अन्यं (anyam) - another; पश्य (paśya) - see; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(Whom the kings approached in the assembly together with sages, him seated today as another, see, O Pāṇḍava, the Pāṇḍava.)
O Pāṇḍava, see that Pāṇḍava, who was once approached in the assembly by kings together with sages, now seated here as another today. (04-17-26)
अतदर्हं महाप्राज्ञं जीवितार्थेऽभिसंश्रितम्। दृष्ट्वा कस्य न दुःखं स्याद्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०४-१७-२७॥
atadarhaṃ mahāprājñaṃ jīvitārthe’bhisaṃśritam। dṛṣṭvā kasya na duḥkhaṃ syāddharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥04-17-27॥
[अतदर्हं (atadarhaṃ) - not worthy (of this); महाप्राज्ञं (mahāprājñam) - the greatly wise; जीवितार्थे (jīvitārthe) - for the sake of life; अभिसंश्रितम् (abhisaṃśritam) - taken refuge; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; न (na) - not; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; धर्मात्मानं (dharmātmānam) - the righteous; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Not worthy, the greatly wise, for the sake of life, taken refuge—having seen, of whom not sorrow would be, the righteous Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Who would not feel sorrow, seeing the greatly wise and righteous Yudhiṣṭhira—unworthy of this state—having taken refuge for the sake of his life? (04-17-27)
उपास्ते स्म सभायां यं कृत्स्ना वीर वसुन्धरा। तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य भारत भारतम् ॥०४-१७-२८॥
upāste sma sabhāyāṃ yaṃ kṛtsnā vīra vasundharā। tam upāsīnam ady ānyaṃ paśya bhārata bhāratam॥04-17-28॥
[उपास्ते (upāste) - worships; स्म (sma) - indeed; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; यं (yaṃ) - whom; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - the whole; all; वीर (vīra) - O hero; वसुन्धरा (vasundharā) - the earth; तम् (tam) - him; उपासीनम् (upāsīnam) - seated; अद्य (adya) - today; अन्यम् (anyaṃ) - another; else; पश्य (paśya) - see; behold; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; भारतम् (bhāratam) - O Bharata;]
(Indeed, O hero, whom the whole earth worships in the assembly, that other one, seated today, see, O Bharata, O Bharata.)
O Bharata, see today that other, seated here, whom the whole earth, O hero, worships in the assembly. (04-17-28)
एवं बहुविधैर्दुःखैः पीड्यमानामनाथवत्। शोकसागरमध्यस्थां किं मां भीम न पश्यसि ॥०४-१७-२९॥
evaṁ bahuvidhair duḥkhaiḥ pīḍyamānām anāthavat śoka-sāgara-madhyasthāṁ kiṁ māṁ bhīma na paśyasi ॥04-17-29॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by various; दुःखैः (duḥkhaiḥ) - sufferings; पीड्यमानाम् (pīḍyamānām) - being afflicted; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like one without a protector; शोकसागरमध्यस्थाम् (śoka-sāgara-madhyasthām) - situated in the midst of the ocean of grief; किम् (kim) - why; माम् (mām) - me; भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; न (na) - not; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - do you see;]
(Thus, by various sufferings being afflicted like one without a protector, situated in the midst of the ocean of grief, why me, O Bhīma, do you not see?)
