श्रुतं भवद्भिर्गदपूर्वजस्य; वाक्यं यथा धर्मवदर्थवच्च। अजातशत्रोश्च हितं हितं च; दुर्योधनस्यापि तथैव राज्ञः ॥५-२-१॥

(Heard by you all is the speech of Gada's elder brother, as it is righteous and meaningful, and beneficial to Ajatashatru and also similarly to Duryodhana, the king.)

अर्धं हि राज्यस्य विसृज्य वीराः; कुन्तीसुतास्तस्य कृते यतन्ते। प्रदाय चार्धं धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रः; सुखी सहास्माभिरतीव मोदेत् ॥५-२-२॥

[अर्धं (ardham) - half; हि (hi) - indeed; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - relinquishing; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; कुन्तीसुताः (kuntīsutāḥ) - sons of Kunti; तस्य (tasya) - for him; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake; यतन्ते (yatante) - strive; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; च (ca) - and; अर्धं (ardham) - half; धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraputraḥ) - son of Dhritarashtra; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; सह (saha) - with; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - us; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; मोदेत् (modet) - should rejoice;]
(Indeed, relinquishing half of the kingdom, the heroes, the sons of Kunti, strive for his sake. Having given half, the son of Dhritarashtra should be extremely happy with us.)

[लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; हि (hi) - indeed; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; पुरुषप्रवीराः (puruṣapravīrāḥ) - valiant men; सम्यक्प्रवृत्तेषु (samyakpravṛtteṣu) - well-disposed; परेषु (pareṣu) - towards others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; ध्रुवं (dhruvaṃ) - surely; प्रशान्ताः (praśāntāḥ) - peaceful; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आविशेयुः (āviśeyuḥ) - would enter; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; प्रशान्तिः (praśāntiḥ) - peace; च (ca) - and; हितं (hitaṃ) - welfare; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the people;]
(Having obtained the kingdom, the valiant men, being well-disposed towards others, would surely enter happiness; their peace is certainly the welfare of the people.)

दुर्योधनस्यापि मतं च वेत्तुं; वक्तुं च वाक्यानि युधिष्ठिरस्य। प्रियं मम स्याद्यदि तत्र कश्चि; द्व्रजेच्छमार्थं कुरुपाण्डवानाम् ॥५-२-४॥
duryodhanasyāpi mataṃ ca vettuṃ; vaktuṃ ca vākyāni yudhiṣṭhirasya। priyaṃ mama syādyadi tatra kaści; dvrajechchamārthaṃ kurupāṇḍavānām ॥5-2-4॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; अपि (api) - also; मतं (mataṃ) - opinion; च (ca) - and; वेत्तुं (vettuṃ) - to know; वक्तुं (vaktuṃ) - to speak; च (ca) - and; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - words; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhishthira; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; मम (mama) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; यदि (yadi) - if; तत्र (tatra) - there; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - would go; क्षमार्थं (kṣamārthaṃ) - for reconciliation; कुरुपाण्डवानाम् (kurupāṇḍavānām) - of the Kuru and Pandavas.;]

स भीष्ममामन्त्र्य कुरुप्रवीरं; वैचित्रवीर्यं च महानुभावम्। द्रोणं सपुत्रं विदुरं कृपं च; गान्धारराजं च ससूतपुत्रम् ॥५-२-५॥

(In these, all assembled; citizens, elders, and gathered. Let him speak words with respect; beneficial to Kunti's son so that it may be.)

सर्वास्ववस्थासु च ते न कौट्या; द्ग्रस्तो हि सोऽर्थो बलमाश्रितैस्तैः। प्रियाभ्युपेतस्य युधिष्ठिरस्य; द्यूते प्रमत्तस्य हृतं च राज्यम् ॥५-२-८॥
sarvāsva-avasthāsu ca te na kauṭyā; dagrasto hi so'rtho balamāśritais taiḥ। priyābhyupetasya yudhiṣṭhirasya; dyūte pramattasya hṛtaṃ ca rājyam ॥5-2-8॥
[सर्वास्ववस्थासु (sarvāsva-avasthāsu) - in all conditions; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; कौट्या (kauṭyā) - by deceit; द्ग्रस्तः (dagrastaḥ) - seized; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - that; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - wealth; बलमाश्रितैः (balamāśritaiḥ) - by those relying on strength; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; प्रियाभ्युपेतस्य (priyābhyupetasya) - of the beloved Yudhishthira; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - Yudhishthira's; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; प्रमत्तस्य (pramattasya) - of the careless one; हृतं (hṛtaṃ) - taken away; च (ca) - and; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom;]
(In all conditions, your wealth was not seized by deceit, but indeed by those relying on strength. The kingdom of the beloved Yudhishthira, who was careless in gambling, was taken away.)

निवार्यमाणश्च कुरुप्रवीरैः; सर्वैः सुहृद्भिर्ह्ययमप्यतज्ज्ञः। गान्धारराजस्य सुतं मताक्षं; समाह्वयेद्देवितुमाजमीढः ॥५-२-९॥
nivāryamāṇaśca kurupravīraiḥ; sarvaiḥ suhṛdbhirhyayamapyatajjñaḥ। gāndhārarājasya sutaṃ matākṣaṃ; samāhvayeddevitumājamīḍhaḥ ॥5-2-9॥
[निवार्यमाणः (nivāryamāṇaḥ) - being restrained; च (ca) - and; कुरु-प्रवीरैः (kuru-pravīraiḥ) - by the Kuru heroes; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - by friends; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; अपि (api) - also; अतज्ज्ञः (atajjñaḥ) - ignorant; गान्धारराजस्य (gāndhārarājasya) - of the king of Gandhara; सुतम् (sutam) - son; मताक्षम् (matākṣam) - Madri's son; समाह्वयेत् (samāhvayet) - would challenge; देवितुम् (devitum) - to fight; आजमीढः (ājamīḍhaḥ) - Ajamidha;]
(Being restrained by the Kuru heroes, by all friends, indeed this ignorant one also would challenge the son of the king of Gandhara, Madri's son, to fight, Ajamidha.)

दुरोदरास्तत्र सहस्रशोऽन्ये; युधिष्ठिरो यान्विषहेत जेतुम्। उत्सृज्य तान्सौबलमेव चायं; समाह्वयत्तेन जितोऽक्षवत्याम् ॥५-२-१०॥
durodarāstatra sahasraśo'nye; yudhiṣṭhiro yānviṣaheta jetum। utsṛjya tānsaubalameva cāyaṃ; samāhvayattena jito'kṣavatyām ॥5-2-10॥
[दुरोदराः (durodarāḥ) - warriors; तत्र (tatra) - there; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; अन्ये (anye) - others; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; यान् (yān) - whom; विषहेत (viṣaheta) - could withstand; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - leaving aside; तान् (tān) - them; सौबलम् (saubalam) - Saubala; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; समाह्वयत् (samāhvayat) - challenged; तेन (tena) - by him; जितः (jitaḥ) - was defeated; अक्षवत्याम् (akṣavatyām) - in the dice game;]
(There were warriors by thousands, others whom Yudhishthira could withstand to conquer. Leaving them aside, he challenged only Saubala and was defeated by him in the dice game.)

[स (sa) - he; दीव्यमानः (dīvyamānaḥ) - gambling; प्रतिदेवनेन (pratidevanena) - with counter-gambling; अक्षेषु (akṣeṣu) - in dice; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सुपराङ्मुखेषु (suparāṅmukheṣu) - facing upwards; संरम्भमाणः (saṃrambhamāṇaḥ) - being agitated; विजितः (vijitaḥ) - defeated; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - forcibly; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - fault; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of the dice; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone;]
(He, gambling with counter-gambling, always in dice facing upwards, being agitated, was forcibly defeated; there was no fault of the dice at all.)

[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having saluted; एव (eva) - indeed; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; ब्रवीतु (bravītu) - should speak; वैचित्रवीर्यं (vaicitravīryaṃ) - to Vicitravīrya; बहु (bahu) - many; साम (sāma) - with reconciliatory words; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraputraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; स्वार्थे (svārthe) - for his own interest; नियोक्तुम् (niyoctum) - to engage; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a man; तेन (tena) - by him;]
(Therefore, having saluted, he should indeed speak words to Vicitravīrya, endowed with many reconciliatory words. Thus, indeed, it is possible to engage Dhritarashtra's son for his own interest by a man like him.)
Therefore, after offering his respects, he should speak to Vicitravīrya with many conciliatory words. In this way, it is indeed possible for a man like him to engage Dhritarashtra's son in his own interest.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

एवं ब्रुवत्येव मधुप्रवीरे; शिनिप्रवीरः सहसोत्पपात। तच्चापि वाक्यं परिनिन्द्य तस्य; समाददे वाक्यमिदं समन्युः ॥५-२-१३॥
evaṃ bruvaty eva madhupravīre; śinipravīraḥ sahasotpapāta। taccāpi vākyaṃ parinindya tasya; samādade vākyam idaṃ samanyuḥ ॥5-2-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; एव (eva) - indeed; मधुप्रवीरे (madhupravīre) - Madhu hero; शिनिप्रवीरः (śinipravīraḥ) - Śini hero; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - rose; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; परिनिन्द्य (parinindya) - criticizing; तस्य (tasya) - his; समाददे (samādade) - took up; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इदम् (idam) - this; समन्युः (samanyuḥ) - angrily;]
(Thus, while the Madhu hero was indeed speaking, the Śini hero suddenly rose. Criticizing that speech of his, he angrily took up this speech.)
While the hero of the Madhu clan was speaking, the hero of the Śini clan suddenly stood up. Criticizing his words, he angrily began to speak.
