कृत्वा विवाहं तु कुरुप्रवीरा; स्तदाभिमन्योर्मुदितस्वपक्षाः। विश्रम्य चत्वार्युषसः प्रतीताः; सभां विराटस्य ततोऽभिजग्मुः ॥५-१-१॥
kṛtvā vivāhaṃ tu kurupravīrāḥ; stadābhimanyormuditasvapakṣāḥ। viśramya catvāryuṣasaḥ pratītāḥ; sabhāṃ virāṭasya tato'bhijagmuḥ ॥5-1-1॥

सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्विदितं यथायं; युधिष्ठिरः सौबलेनाक्षवत्याम्। जितो निकृत्यापहृतं च राज्यं; पुनः प्रवासे समयः कृतश्च ॥५-१-१०॥
sarvairbhavadbhirviditaṃ yathāyaṃ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ saubalenākṣavatyām। jito nikṛtyāpahṛtaṃ ca rājyaṃ; punaḥ pravāse samayaḥ kṛtaśca ॥5-1-10॥

(It is known by all of you that Yudhishthira was defeated by Saubala in the game of dice; by deceit, the kingdom was taken away and again an agreement was made for exile.)
All of you know how Yudhishthira was defeated by Shakuni in the dice game, and deceitfully his kingdom was taken away, and again he was sent into exile as per the agreement.
शक्तैर्विजेतुं तरसा महीं च; सत्ये स्थितैस्तच्चरितं यथावत्। पाण्डोः सुतैस्तद्व्रतमुग्ररूपं; वर्षाणि षट्सप्त च भारताग्र्यैः ॥५-१-११॥
śaktairvijetuṃ tarasā mahīṃ ca; satye sthitaistaccaritaṃ yathāvat. pāṇḍoḥ sutais tadvratamugrarūpaṃ; varṣāṇi ṣaṭsapta ca bhāratāgryaiḥ ॥5-1-11॥
[शक्तैः (śaktaiḥ) - by the powerful; विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; च (ca) - and; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थितैः (sthitaiḥ) - by those who are steadfast; तत् (tat) - that; चरितम् (caritam) - conduct; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pandu; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - by the sons; तत् (tat) - that; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; उग्ररूपम् (ugrarūpam) - fierce in form; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; षट्-सप्त (ṣaṭ-sapta) - six-seven; च (ca) - and; भारताग्र्यैः (bhāratāgryaiḥ) - by the foremost of the Bharatas;]
(By the powerful, to conquer the earth by force; by those who are steadfast in truth, that conduct as it is. By the sons of Pandu, that vow fierce in form; for six-seven years and by the foremost of the Bharatas.)

त्रयोदशश्चैव सुदुस्तरोऽय; मज्ञायमानैर्भवतां समीपे। क्लेशानसह्यांश्च तितिक्षमाणै; र्यथोषितं तद्विदितं च सर्वम् ॥५-१-१२॥
trayodaśaścaiva sudustaro'ya; majñāyamānairbhavatāṃ samīpe। kleśānasahyāṃśca titikṣamāṇai; ryathoṣitaṃ tadviditaṃ ca sarvam ॥5-1-12॥

(Thirteen and indeed very difficult to cross, being known by you near, afflictions unbearable and being endured, as lived, that known and all.)
The thirteen years, which were very difficult to endure, have been spent by you with unbearable afflictions, and all of that is known.
एवं गते धर्मसुतस्य राज्ञो; दुर्योधनस्यापि च यद्धितं स्यात्। तच्चिन्तयध्वं कुरुपाण्डवानां; धर्म्यं च युक्तं च यशस्करं च ॥५-१-१३॥
evaṃ gate dharmasutasya rājño; duryodhanasyāpi ca yaddhitaṃ syāt। taccintayadhvaṃ kurupāṇḍavānāṃ; dharmyaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca yaśaskaraṃ ca ॥5-1-13॥

(Thus, having gone of the son of Dharma, of the king; also of Duryodhana, and what benefit may be; that consider of the Kuru and Pandavas; righteous and proper and glorious and.)
Thus, consider what would be beneficial for both the son of Dharma, the king, and Duryodhana, in a manner that is righteous, proper, and brings glory to both the Kuru and Pandavas.
अधर्मयुक्तं च न कामयेत; राज्यं सुराणामपि धर्मराजः। धर्मार्थयुक्तं च महीपतित्वं; ग्रामेऽपि कस्मिंश्चिदयं बुभूषेत् ॥५-१-१४॥

(Dharmaraja should not desire a kingdom associated with unrighteousness, even if it belongs to the gods; he should desire sovereignty associated with righteousness and purpose, even in some village.)

(And Arjuna was not conquered in battle by them; by his own prowess, by the sons of Dhritarashtra. Nevertheless, the king, accompanied by friends, desires only their welfare.)
