कथं सज्जेत भोगेषु न च तप्येन्महत्तपः। विवर्धमानस्त्रिशिराः सर्वं त्रिभुवनं ग्रसेत् ॥५-९-८॥

इति सञ्चिन्त्य बहुधा बुद्धिमान्भरतर्षभ। आज्ञापयत्सोऽप्सरसस्त्वष्टृपुत्रप्रलोभने ॥५-९-९॥
iti sañcintya bahudhā buddhimānbharatarṣabha। ājñāpayatso'psarasastvaṣṭṛputrapralobhane ॥5-9-9॥

(Thus, having considered in many ways, the wise one, O best of the Bharatas, he ordered the celestial nymphs to entice Tvashta's son.)

यथा स सज्जेत्त्रिशिराः कामभोगेषु वै भृशम्। क्षिप्रं कुरुत गच्छध्वं प्रलोभयत माचिरम् ॥५-९-१०॥
yathā sa sajjettriśirāḥ kāmabhogeṣu vai bhṛśam। kṣipraṃ kuruta gacchadhvaṃ pralobhayata māciram ॥5-9-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; स (sa) - he; सज्जेत् (sajjet) - may be attached; त्रिशिराः (triśirāḥ) - Triśiras; कामभोगेषु (kāmabhogeṣu) - in sensual pleasures; वै (vai) - indeed; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; कुरुत (kuruta) - do; गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvaṃ) - go; प्रलोभयत (pralobhayata) - entice; माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay;]

अस्वस्थं ह्यात्मनात्मानं लक्षयामि वराङ्गनाः। भयमेतन्महाघोरं क्षिप्रं नाशयताबलाः ॥५-९-१२॥
asvasthaṁ hyātmanātmānaṁ lakṣayāmi varāṅganāḥ। bhayametanmahāghoraṁ kṣipraṁ nāśayatābalāḥ ॥5-9-12॥

(I perceive myself as unwell, indeed, O beautiful ladies. Destroy this very terrible fear quickly, O weak ones.)

तथा यत्नं करिष्यामः शक्र तस्य प्रलोभने। यथा नावाप्स्यसि भयं तस्माद्बलनिषूदन ॥५-९-१३॥
tathā yatnaṃ kariṣyāmaḥ śakra tasya pralobhane। yathā nāvāpsyasi bhayaṃ tasmādbalaniṣūdana ॥5-9-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; यत्नं (yatnam) - effort; करिष्यामः (kariṣyāmaḥ) - we will do; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रलोभने (pralobhane) - in enticing; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain; भयं (bhayam) - fear; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; बलनिषूदन (balaniṣūdana) - O destroyer of force;]
(Thus, O Indra, we will make an effort in enticing him so that you will not obtain fear from that, O destroyer of force.)

निर्दहन्निव चक्षुर्भ्यां योऽसावास्ते तपोनिधिः। तं प्रलोभयितुं देव गच्छामः सहिता वयम् ॥ यतिष्यामो वशे कर्तुं व्यपनेतुं च ते भयम् ॥५-९-१४॥

(Burning as if with eyes, that treasure of penance resides. To tempt him, O god, let us go together. We shall try to bring under control and remove your fear.)

इन्द्रेण तास्त्वनुज्ञाता जग्मुस्त्रिशिरसोऽन्तिकम्। तत्र ता विविधैर्भावैर्लोभयन्त्यो वराङ्गनाः ॥ नृत्यं संदर्शयन्त्यश्च तथैवाङ्गेषु सौष्ठवम् ॥५-९-१५॥

न स शक्यः सुदुर्धर्षो धैर्याच्चालयितुं प्रभो। यत्ते कार्यं महाभाग क्रियतां तदनन्तरम् ॥५-९-१८॥
na sa śakyaḥ sudurdharṣo dhairyāccālayituṃ prabho। yatte kāryaṃ mahābhāga kriyatāṃ tadanantaram ॥5-9-18॥

(He is not possible to be shaken from courage, O lord. O fortunate one, let your duty be done thereafter.)

सम्पूज्याप्सरसः शक्रो विसृज्य च महामतिः। चिन्तयामास तस्यैव वधोपायं महात्मनः ॥५-९-१९॥
sampūjyāpsarasaḥ śakro visṛjya ca mahāmatiḥ। cintayāmāsa tasyaiva vadhopāyaṃ mahātmanaḥ ॥5-9-19॥

(He, the glorious hero and king of gods, silently thinking, with a determined and wise mind, became intent on killing Trishira.)

वज्रमस्य क्षिपाम्यद्य स क्षिप्रं न भविष्यति। शत्रुः प्रवृद्धो नोपेक्ष्यो दुर्बलोऽपि बलीयसा ॥५-९-२१॥

उपस्पृश्य ततः क्रुद्धस्तपस्वी सुमहायशाः। अग्निं हुत्वा समुत्पाद्य घोरं वृत्रमुवाच ह ॥ इन्द्रशत्रो विवर्धस्व प्रभावात्तपसो मम ॥५-९-४३॥

(Having touched then, the angry ascetic, very famous, having offered fire, having created the terrible Vritra, said indeed: "O enemy of Indra, grow by the power of my penance.")
Then, the very famous and angry ascetic, after touching and offering to the fire, created the terrible Vritra and said: "O enemy of Indra, grow strong through the power of my penance."
सोऽवर्धत दिवं स्तब्ध्वा सूर्यवैश्वानरोपमः। किं करोमीति चोवाच कालसूर्य इवोदितः ॥ शक्रं जहीति चाप्युक्तो जगाम त्रिदिवं ततः ॥५-९-४४॥
so'vardhata divaṃ stabdhvā sūryavaiśvānaropamaḥ। kiṃ karomīti covāca kālasūrya ivoditaḥ ॥ śakraṃ jahīti cāpyukto jagāma tridivaṃ tataḥ ॥5-9-44॥

(He grew, blocking the sky, like the sun and fire. "What do I do?" he said, risen like the time-sun. "Conquer Indra," he was also told, then he went to heaven.)

ततो जग्राह देवेन्द्रं वृत्रो वीरः शतक्रतुम्। अपावृत्य स जग्रास वृत्रः क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥५-९-४६॥

ग्रस्ते वृत्रेण शक्रे तु सम्भ्रान्तास्त्रिदशास्तदा। असृजंस्ते महासत्त्वा जृम्भिकां वृत्रनाशिनीम् ॥५-९-४७॥

(Then, from the opened mouth of the yawning Vritra, having contracted his own limbs, the destroyer of Bala emerged. From then on, yawning resided in creatures in the worlds.)

जहृषुश्च सुराः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा शक्रं विनिःसृतम्। ततः प्रववृते युद्धं वृत्रवासवयोः पुनः ॥ संरब्धयोस्तदा घोरं सुचिरं भरतर्षभ ॥५-९-४९॥
jahṛṣuśca surāḥ sarve dṛṣṭvā śakraṃ viniḥsṛtam। tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ vṛtravāsavayoḥ punaḥ ॥ saṃrabdhayostadā ghoraṃ suciraṃ bharatarṣabha ॥5-9-49॥
[जहृषुः (jahṛṣuḥ) - rejoiced; च (ca) - and; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; विनिःसृतम् (viniḥsṛtam) - emerged; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रववृते (pravavṛte) - commenced; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; वृत्रवासवयोः (vṛtravāsavayoḥ) - between Vritra and Indra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; संरब्धयोः (saṃrabdhayoḥ) - of the enraged ones; तदा (tadā) - then; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(And all the gods rejoiced, seeing Indra emerged. Then the battle commenced again between Vritra and Indra, O best of the Bharatas, of the enraged ones, terrible for a long time.)
All the gods were delighted to see Indra emerge. Then, a fierce and prolonged battle ensued once more between Vritra and Indra, O best of the Bharatas.
यदा व्यवर्धत रणे वृत्रो बलसमन्वितः। त्वष्टुस्तपोबलाद्विद्वांस्तदा शक्रो न्यवर्तत ॥५-९-५०॥
yadā vyavardhata raṇe vṛtro balasamanvitaḥ। tvaṣṭustapobalādvidvāṃstadā śakro nyavartata ॥5-9-50॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; व्यवर्धत (vyavardhata) - grew; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; वृत्रः (vṛtraḥ) - Vritra; बलसमन्वितः (balasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with strength; त्वष्टुः (tvaṣṭuḥ) - of Tvashta; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; बलात् (balāt) - by the power; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; तदा (tadā) - then; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; न्यवर्तत (nyavartata) - retreated;]
(When Vritra, endowed with strength, grew in battle by the power of Tvashta's austerity, then wise Indra retreated.)
When Vritra, empowered by the strength from Tvashta's austerity, grew formidable in battle, the wise Indra chose to retreat.
निवृत्ते तु तदा देवा विषादमगमन्परम्। समेत्य शक्रेण च ते त्वष्टुस्तेजोविमोहिताः ॥ अमन्त्रयन्त ते सर्वे मुनिभिः सह भारत ॥५-९-५१॥
nivṛtte tu tadā devā viṣādamagamanparam। sametya śakreṇa ca te tvaṣṭuste jovimohitāḥ ॥ amantrayanta te sarve munibhiḥ saha bhārata ॥5-9-51॥
[निवृत्ते (nivṛtte) - ceased; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; विषादम् (viṣādam) - sorrow; अगमन् (agaman) - attained; परम् (param) - great; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; त्वष्टुः (tvaṣṭuḥ) - of Tvaṣṭṛ; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; विमोहिताः (vimohitāḥ) - bewildered; अमन्त्रयन्त (amantrayanta) - consulted; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - with sages; सह (saha) - together; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(But then the gods, having ceased, attained great sorrow. Having assembled with Indra, they were bewildered by the energy of Tvaṣṭṛ. They all consulted together with the sages, O Bhārata.)
After the cessation, the gods were overwhelmed with great sorrow. They gathered with Indra and were confused by Tvaṣṭṛ's energy. Together with the sages, they deliberated, O Bhārata.
किं कार्यमिति ते राजन्विचिन्त्य भयमोहिताः। जग्मुः सर्वे महात्मानं मनोभिर्विष्णुमव्ययम् ॥ उपविष्टा मन्दराग्रे सर्वे वृत्रवधेप्सवः ॥५-९-५२॥
kiṁ kāryamiti te rājanvicintya bhayamohitāḥ। jagmuḥ sarve mahātmānaṁ manobhirviṣṇumavyayam ॥ upaviṣṭā mandarāgre sarve vṛtravadepsavaḥ ॥5-9-52॥
